Tonight, on the sound we sit down with FroviQ also known as Zack Frovick from Apple Valley Minnesota. FroviQ is a rapper who creates his own music straight from his closet. FroviQ has been creating his own music since 2019 and recently came out with his first album in 2022 titled Between the Lines. This duo band, based out of Oshkosh WI, released their newest album “Guess it’s Just Life” in April 2021 after their previous album “Sinking Ships and Story Tales”. Their track “Bad Type” focuses on a toxic relationship filled with lies. Alternatively, their track “All in” speaks about how they would go All In for their partners. Today on The Sound we check out the latest album from Gregg Hall titled Echoes From The Treetops. Gregg, a staple in the regional music scene has played in numerous bands over the years from The Smokin’ Bandits, The White Iron Band and his own band Gregg Hall and the Wrecking Ball just to name a few. Echoes From The Treetops was recorded at the legendary Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls and was produced by Chad Staehly who plays keys in Great American Taxi and High Hawks and has worked with the likes of Todd Snider. With Echoes From The Treetops we hear Gregg continue to evolve, this time with a more classic rock sound that’ll get you movin’. I caught up with Gregg with a phone call as he was driving to Minneapolis to pick up his bass player for a gig. Typical right? Hmmm, did I just make a bass player joke? New Rocket Union is John Ensley banging out guitar riffs and singing with Bruce Gustafson banging out the beat and backing vocals. The band describes themselves as garage punk and their straight ahead no frills style on this album grabs ahold of you and doesn’t let go until the end. Tonight on The Sound we bring you the latest album from Becky Kapell titled, In It To Win It. Becky is a country and americana musician out of St. Paul, MN whose path to the Minnesota music scene has been a unique and interesting journey. In fact, the Minneapolis Star Tribune called Becky a “late-bloomer country crooner” because of her unique path and what some might call her late arrival, but we’re glad she’s here now. In It To Win It is Becky’s 3rd album since the release of her debut titled “For Now” was released in 2012. Produced by Paul Bergen and featuring Erik Koskinen, Jeremy Johnson, Nate Gamb, In It To Win It takes us on a delightful journey through some true blue Minnesota country music. Or as Ms. Kapell’s bio says, “Groovy, swampy, honky-tonky, heart-breaky, sassy, kick-assy original music from America's midwest.” Well, I think that pretty much sums it up. Luke is a country musician out of Rochester, MN whose unique take on classic country sounds evolves more with each release. A Place To Call Our Own is something of a concept album in that all the songs combine to paint a picture and tell a story, and just like his previous releases, Luke isn’t afraid to tackle intensely personal subjects on this album while keeping things relatable for the listener. Oof is Tyler Steinley, founder of Ouids Records and drummer extraordinaire for Sleeping Jesus, Afflatus and Swashbuckler. A staple and a force in the Winona music scene, Tyler’s or Oof’s story is a familiar one as of late. When Covid 19 quarantines hit other music projects slowed down and Oof was born. Tonight on The Sound we bring you the debut album EXTEND, from Aura Vortex recording artists Robot Slide. This Minneapolis based band is comprised of three brothers, Matt, Jake, and Todd along with their good friend Liam. Aura Vortex describes their artists as “sort-of-pop” and I think it’s safe to say that Robot Slide most definitely sort-of fits into that category. This guitarless quartet uses vintage keyboards, synths, and samplers to weave in and around lo-fi hip-hop and 8-bit video game music to create the unique and delightful collection of songs that make up their debut album EXTEND. Tonight on The Sound we follow some rising stars through their explosive musical journey over the past year. During the quarantine times of the COVID-19 pandemic, siblings Austin and Taryn Durry came together to write some of the hookiest hooks we’ve heard in a while, seemingly cranking out tunes on the fly as their fan base grows and clammers for more. The band is Durry, they hail from Burnsville, MN and if you don’t know them by now, you soon will. Some may already know Austin as the lead singer for Coyote Kid. Tonight, on The Sound we have an exclusive debut by midwestern artist Erik Shicotte titled Miss’ry Pacific. Miss’ry Pacific is Erik’s debut EP and is being released on Shooter Jennings’ Black Country Rock Records this Friday, July 16th. Tonight, we get to hear all six tracks from the EP, along with stories of how the songs and the EP came together to create what Erik calls a manifestation of midwestern guilt. The EP moves from track to track like the transcontinental railroad rolling across the countryside, touching on themes of wanderlust, love, and of course… trains! Erik, a Milwaukee native, joins us on the phone tonight to help us dig into each track telling story after story along the way. Originally released on vinyl in 1986, Silent Dreams is now being re-released in digital form, a whole 35 years after it’s original release. We caught up with Victims vocalist and keyboardist, Steve Harm to find out what it was like to start a band, make a record and book tours all without the aid of the internet. Tonight on The Sound we hear from hip hopper Nur-D. Nur-D is a Minneapolis artist with a variety of talents including rapping, singing and spoken word. With a conscious message delivered with no curses, he defies the conception of hip hop today. Nur-D displays his influences in geek culture as well as socially conscious messages. Tonight on the Sound we check out Minneapolis rockers Kiss the Tiger. This 5 piece band does straight up rock songs that go straight to your um brain and get stuck there. With Infectious guitar driven grooves and strong sassy vocals, Kiss the Tiger takes sounds reminiscent of the Rolling Stones and Patti Smith and wraps em up in a tight modern sounding rock and roll machine. Since the early 2000's, he has released 13 albums, performed shows all across the nation and become a frequent guest of Winona's Midwest Music Fest.
