But that didn't mean you couldn't get where you wanted to go from central Harnett County where the North Carolina piedmont meets the Coastal Plain. Campbell has produced United States congressmen, Major League Baseball players, PGA Tour members, thousands of lawyers, plus doctors, teachers and more graduates who live all over the globe. How about a model who has walked the runways in Milan and New York City, an actor who works the sound stages in Los Angeles… and a tennis instructor, all rolled up in one? Frankie DelConte once guarded Michael Jordan in high school before starring on the Campbell tennis team in the early days of the program's Division one era. Now, his acting and modeling career keeps him busy on the West Coast, but he still makes time to play – and help others learn – the sport he loves. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Frankie Delconte talks with Stan Cole about growing up in Wilmington, his path to Campbell, how he transitioned from a career in sales to modeling and acting and more. Four years later, he not only graduated, but left a legacy that included All-America honors, a Big South player of the year award, and victories over the likes of North Carolina, Duke and Penn State. He went on to serve as an assistant coach at his alma mater – helping the team win two Big South titles – and to play professional indoor soccer. Along the way, Juha and his wife Whitney – who met at CU – raised a family and settled in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. He is a member of the Campbell Athletics and Big South Conference Halls of Fame. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Juha Miettinen talks with Stan Cole about growing up in Finland, his path to Campbell, his career, journey and more. Jay Overton arrived at Campbell in the fall of 1971 and made a golf powerhouse even better. A transfer from Duke, Jay helped lead the Camels to back-to-back top-five finishes in the NAIA national tournament, including a runner-up showing in 1973 when he was the individual co-champion. Under the direction of coach Hargrove Davis, Jay and his teammates were part of a golf dynasty in Buies Creek – even before Keith Hills golf club was built in 1974 – and the athletic teams transitioned to the Division I ranks. Those Campbell teams finished in the top five of the NAIA national championship seven times in a nine-year span from 1969 through 1977. Following graduation, Jay began a career as golf professional in 1973 at Pinehurst Country Club and became head pro two years later. He served more than three decades at Innisbrook Resort in Florida and is now Director of Golf at Puntacana Resort in the Dominican Republic. Along the way, he competed on the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Legends – and has played in a total of 24 majors - including a pair of US Open Championships. Jay was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988, and his travels recently brought him back to the Cape Fear Region for his grandson's high school graduation. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Jay Overton chats with Stan Cole about growing up in a golf family, his path to Campbell, his professional career, and more. Yvonne Cox arrived at Campbell in the fall of 1996 fresh off a West Virginia State amateur title and joined a golf program that would become one of the nation's best over the next four years. A relative late-starter in the game, Vonnie's all-around athleticism and competitive drive propelled her to a pair of top-10 finishes in the ASUN Championship and two NCAA regional appearances. After graduating in 2000, Vonnie qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship then embarked on a professional career. Over five seasons, she made 64 starts on the LPGA Developmental circuit – now known as the Epson Tour – and qualified for the 2004 U.S. Open. She entered the business field and took an extended break from the game but regained her passion for the sport. She has already won a pair of tournaments while producing a top-10 finish at the 2023 LPGA Senior Championship. Through the years, she has stayed in contact with her fellow Campbell Golf alumni and has returned to participate in the annual Battle for the Creek tournament in early November. Now based in Williamsburg, Virginia, Vonnie is a teaching pro in addition to competing on the Legends of the LPGA Tour. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Yvonne Cox-Holmes chats with Stan Cole about her family's influence on her sporting career, her path to Campbell, where she was offered scholarships in both golf and softball, her professional career and more. Successful college student-athletes are often expert multitaskers – balancing a heavy academic course load with all of the duties expected of a scholarship athlete in and out of season. To say that Denise Ford Shipman did it all during her career at Campbell University would be a vast understatement. Off the floor, she was voted the 1988 Homecoming Queen, was a cadet in the Reserve Officer's Training Corps and commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army upon graduation in 1989. After serving in the Army, Denise earned multiple master's degrees and has devoted much of her professional career to public education. She was inducted in the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011 and this fall, will be enshrined in the Guilford County Hall of Fame. took a chance on a Campbell program that was in a building phase – literally and figuratively. After playing on the Miami Tropics AAU team that sent six players to the Division I ranks, Rodriguez moved to Buies Creek and tiny Carter Gym – capacity 947 – to be a key figure in Coach Robbie Laing's fast-paced attack. He played his first two years in tiny Carter Gym then his last two in Gore Arena as he helped a team go from a winless league record two years before his arrival to a conference regular season title in his senior year. J-Rod was a Mid-Major Freshman All-American and four-time All-Conference performer who at the time of his graduation was one of only 101 players in Division I history to reach the 2000-point, 1000-rebound mark. From there, he embarked on a professional career that has taken him all over the globe and earned a place on the Puerto Rican National team. It's no surprise that J-Rod was inducted this year into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Jonathan Rodriguez chats with Stan Cole about moving to the States as a high school student, his path to Campbell, his professional career, and more. Suggestions for future Tales from the Creek interview subjects are always welcome and may be sent to Stan Cole at cole@campbell.edu.
A quarter century after she graduated, Martha Covington is still one of the best hitters in Campbell and Atlantic Sun Conference softball history. The fast pitch era of Campbell's softball program was less than a decade old in 1996 when Martha first stepped into the left-handed batter's box. She immediately showed Campbell fans that a hitter could display power without sacrificing contact. She shattered the school records for doubles, home runs, total bases and RBI. She set a school mark for slugging percentage, and her .429 batting average is second all-time in Campbell history. Martha was a four-time Atlantic Sun first-team all-conference performer, three-time All-Southeast Region selection and a 3-time ASun batting champ. It's no surprise that she was a member of this year's Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame induction class. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Martha Covington chats with Stan Cole about her love of the outdoors, her path to Campbell, how a strong work impacted her performance, and more. When Taylor Reed stepped on campus as a freshman in August of 2007 to say that he was more than familiar with his surroundings would be a vast understatement. Not only was Taylor a highly-valued defensive lineman who was preparing to compete for playing time on Campbell's first Division I football team, but he brought a family tie to the university that dated more than a century. Taylor Reed's great, great grandfather is James Archibald Campbell, who opened Buies Creek Academy on January 5, 1887. His great grandfather is Leslie Hartwell Campbell, who succeeded his father as president of Campbell College and oversaw the school's transition from junior college to a four-year institution in the early 1960s. His grandmother is Catherine Campbell King, longtime faculty member who spent decades welcoming newcomers to Buies Creek and making them feel at home. Taylor earned a starting spot on the defensive front as well as multiple PFL All-Academic honors and graduated with a degree from the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. Now married and a father of two daughters, Taylor and his wife Lindsey not only decided to move back to Buies Creek, but they chose to live in his grandparents' home on Leslie Campbell Avenue. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Taylor Reed chats with Stan Cole about growing up in a Campbell family, his path to CU, his professional journey and much more. Suggestions for future Tales from the Creek interview subjects are always welcome and may be sent to Stan Cole at cole@campbell.edu.
Fred Whitfield first set foot in Carter Gym in the late 1960s – as an 8-year-old attending the Campbell Basketball School. Little did he know then that Campbell University would be a launching point for an incredible career in athletics. A decade of summer camps in Buies Creek helped develop the skills that would enable him to play Division I basketball. The educational foundation set by his parents propelled him to not only an undergraduate degree, but an MBA and law school. His accomplishments and awards are numerous – induction into the Campbell Athletics and North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, recipient of the Order of the Longleaf Pine and the Thurgood Marshall Award of Excellence, the playing floor at his high school bears his name. Those honors and many others have followed a career that began in coaching at his alma mater, opening a law practice, joining one of the most prestigious sports agent firms in the world, working at Nike, where he helped launch the Jordan Brand and serving as an executive for two NBA franchises. Along the way, Fred Whitfield always built relationships first. Whether it was starting a basketball camp for underserved youth in his hometown of Greensboro, negotiating deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars, or working with leaders from both sides of the aisle through politically sensitive subjects, Fred's humility, sense of service and the ability to ask the right question at the right time all have served him, and those he encounters, well. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, North Carolina Sports and Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame member Fred Whitfield chats with Stan Cole about growing up in Greensboro, attending the Campbell Basketball School, his path to Campbell, his professional journey and much more. Suggestions for future Tales from the Creek interview subjects are always welcome and may be sent to Stan Cole at cole@campbell.edu.

Sixty years ago this summer, John Marshbanks arrived on the Campbell College campus for the fall semester in 1965. By the time he graduated four years later, no one in Campbell Basketball history had scored more points than the 6-foot-8 center from Marietta. Now, more than 55 years since John left Buies Creek, only three players have amassed more points in their career – Chris Clemons, Jonathan Rodriguez and Sam Staggers. It's no surprise that John was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. However, John Marshbanks' life has been about much more than basketball. He had a tryout with the ABA's Miami Floridians, but his professional journey took a different turn. Entrepreneur, teacher, coach, lay minister – John has assumed many professional titles in addition to husband, father and granddad. Through the years, he has remained in contact with teammates, classmates and his alma mater. In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Hall of Fame basketball standout John Marshbanks talks with Stan Cole about growing up in the Atlanta area, his family connection to Buies Creek, an ABA tryout, his career journey, and much more.

Numbers don't tell the whole story. But sometimes, those numbers are so impressive that they are a starting point for a really good story. 162 Tournament titles38 NCAA postseason appearances27 Conference championships28 Conference players of the Year17 Conference freshmen of the Year215 All-Conference performers381 Conference All-Academic team members That's just a small sample of the accomplishments compiled by head coach John Crooks and his players since he took over as men's golf coach at Campbell in 1990 and assumed women's head coaching duties one year later. Heading into his 36th year at Campbell – John Crooks will become the longest tenured head coach in school history when the academic calendar flips this August. It's safe to say that he has built not only a mid-major powerhouse, but also one of the best college golf programs in the Southeastern United States. That program has not only produced three – soon to be four – PGA Tour professionals, but hundreds of successful Campbell graduates over the last four decades. John Crooks moved to Buies Creek four decades ago and this place became not only his home, but that of his children and their families. In the first of two episodes of Tales from the Creek, Hall of Fame Coach John Crooks talks with Stan Cole about how he began playing golf, competing at the highest level, his journey to Buies Creek, his path to coaching, and much more.

Recruited by Cal Koonce – a member of the 1969 Amazin' Mets – and later coached by 1982 Cy Young runner-up Mike Caldwell – Cory enjoyed a career capped by leading the Camels to their first Big South baseball title in 1988 and earning all-conference and all-tournament honors along the way. Thirty-seven years since he graduated, his name is still etched in the Campbell record books. He is still ranked among the program's top five all time leaders in wins, starts, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1988, Cory played three seasons in the minors, earning Midwest League All-Star honors in 1989. After his playing career ended Cory began a teaching career in Harnett County and later Richmond County. He was twice honored as principal of the year and later served as assistant superintendent and interim superintendent of Scotland County schools. After retiring from administrative duties, he was elected to the Richmond County Board of Education in 2022 and continues to serve that organization. In addition to playing golf whenever he can, Cory is also a member of the Athletic Director's advisory board at his alma mater. Over the last four and one-half decades, "Ernie G" – as he's still known to friends and teammates – has worked in numerous management and consulting roles and traveled extensively. He's also the author of Fusion of Cultures and a contributor to the PBS documentary "Voices over the Water" – which explores Scottish immigration in the United States. Under the direction of coaches Danny Roberts and Hargrove Davis, Brewer and his teammates established a golf dynasty in Buies Creek – even before Keith Hills golf club was built in 1974 – and the athletic teams transitioned to the Division I ranks. Following graduation, Sam worked as a golf professional for four decades – retiring in 2015 as director of golf at North Ridge Country Club. Through the years, Sam has stayed in close contact with his former teammates, getting together for regular rounds of golf and other social events. Dale Steele literally built the Campbell Football program from the ground up. He arrived in Buies Creek in 2006 and spent the next two years putting together facilities, a staff and roster in time for the program to relaunch in 2008 after a 58-year hiatus. Coach Steele brought a quarter century of college football coaching experience to Campbell and turned the program into a winner in just four short years. The son of a high school coach and graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he played on the offensive and defensive lines, Dale began a coaching career that lasted more than 45 years when he took a graduate assistant position at Ball State in 1977. Over the years, his travels took him to Wisconsin, Tulane, Wichita State, Kansas State, East Carolina, Baylor, East Tennessee and Elon before he and his family moved to Harnett County in 2006. Among the many accomplishments of his career, include five bowl trips and back-to-back FCS national titles while he was on the staff at James Madison. Now retired, he has served as an advisor to current Campbell head coach Braxton Harris and is involved with the Myrtle Beach Bowl, while he and his wife Pam spend as much time as possible with their grand kids. Orville Peterson and Ernie White both transferred to Campbell to train with the legendary Coach Brant Tolsma. Before their time was finished, both earned All-America honors and represented their country in the most grueling competition in track and field. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Campbell Hall of Fame members Orville Peterson and Ernie White talk with Stan Cole about their paths to Campbell, training in Buies Creek, competing all over the nation, and more.
