Character death is without a doubt the biggest consequence a player can be subjected to in this hobby. Working out when and how a character dies though is not something everyone agrees on. Should the dice dictate or should a player have a say? In today's episode I try something new. Join Shannon and Sean from Paradice Productions as we talk about a GMing philosophy Sean has developped. One of the elements of this ideology is that a player character should only die if their player is ready for them to die. Other things I talked about in today's episode include:
-Sherlock Board Game: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2511/sherlock-holmes-consulting-detective-thames-murder
Combat is a critical pillar of most tabletop roleplaying games. This is especially true in games like Dungeons and Dragons, where characters are built with combat powers and skills! It's easy to fall into a habit of looking at combat as a purely mechanical part of the game but there are so many interesting opportunities for the narrative of the game and for the characters personalities to shine through. Join us this week as Tom and Bodhi from Homie & the Dude talk to me about how to add energy and spark to combat. We also cover how those strategies translate into vehicular combat (like boats and airships). If you liked Tom and Bodhi’s insights (who am I kidding, of course you did) you can find them on twitter at @HOMIEandTheDUDE. You can also take a look at their website for more details about their content: https://homieandthedude.com/ Enjoy! Currencies might be more than you think! While we often think of money as a currency in a game, things like items, spells, even HP can be considered currency and the way we incorporatre them into our ttrpgs will have a big impact on the tone, style and play of a system and a game session. Today i am joined be Richard, a seasoned game designer to talk about currency in games.

A surefire way to make a players actions and decisions impactful is to make them consequential. Showing a player or a party the effects of their decisions, or better yet, making them deal with those decisions by creating new opportunities and obstacles for them can really imerse them in the world and make them feel ownership over the narrative that is being constructed. This week I am joined by Jeremy from Three Black Halflings (amoung other things!) to take a deep dive on the topic and help you understand how to make your players actions consequential all while keeping the game fun and enjoyable for all.

Sometimes who is saying something matters more than what they are saying. This couldn't be more true when we consider unreliable narrators in role playing games. They keep secrets, they exagerate truths, they stretch and bend and manipulate. Unreliable narrators come in all shapes and sizes. Welcome back to Role Play Chat!!! Season three here we come :D
Okay okay, back to the usual intro stuff: A big part of what makes playing in a tabletop RPG fun are the spoils you get to enjoy after catching the villain, saving the town or rescuing the hostages. The traditions, stories, legends and myths of the inhabitants of your setting make up a rich tapestry that contribute to a player's sense of immersion when playing in a TTRPG. Lore comes in all shapes and sizes! Failure is a big part of playing D&D or any other TTRPG. Missed attacks, botched stealth checks or failed social interactions with NPCs happen all the time. If you ask most Dungeon Masters, Game Masters, or Players, one of the joys of the fall is running or playing in a Halloween themed game. Spooky, scary, horrific or silly Halloween games can take many forms and can be inspired by so many things in media. And that is one of the things that makes it such a great theme - it's flexibility! In today's episode Chris and I discuss what makes a Halloween game special and we go through a list of things that we like to use for inspiration when prepping a Halloween Game for our tabletop RPG groups.

Being a Dungeon Master or Game Master can be taxing. Despite being loads of fun, sometimes finding the balance between running a fun game, managing prep time and our daily lives, this wonderful hobby of ours can feel like it adds stress and anxiety into our lives. In this week's episode Chris and I take an introspective look at the things that cause us stress or anxiety in our games, then we share strategies we employ to try and combat them. Full disclosure, we vent a little haha, but it felt good and hopefully listening to us can also help you feel good too! We play TTRPG for fun after all and it's important to keep your well-being front and center as you play.

We've all done downtime or timeskips to zoom past a few days, weeks, or months, it's a needed part of the game. Helps with a number of things like pacing, character leveling up, etc. but is there a way to do timeskips while also adding opportunities for roleplay? Yes! Yes there is a way, and in this weeks episode we talk about a strategy we've employed recently to conduct a timeskip while also enabling fun role play scenes at the gaming table.

Box text, written dialogue, bullets or monologues, we've all written or read some form of prepared text in our tabletop RPG but finding the right time to use it to make the most of it can sometime be tricky. In this weeks episode we talk about our experiences with prepared text as both a GM and as a player and go over what makes it good, great or cumbersome based on the circumstances.

Striking the right balance between challenging and enabling your players is a needed skill for Game Masters in the hobby. Building challenges for players builds up tension, creates payoff but do it too much and you risk to frustrate the people around the table. Creativity shines and narrative goes in fun and unexpected ways if you enable your players, but again, if you do it too much your world will lose consistency and players will lose purpose. A balance is needed, but it's easier said than done! In today's episode we talk about the elegant dance a game master needs to do when enabling and challenging their table. In #TTRPGs, most party eventually end up managing some kind of HOME BASE. It could be a keep where they raise an army, a temple to honor a god, or even a tavern to gather people and rumors. In any case, having a headquarter or stronghold has a lot of benefits for your gaming experience, but it also brings its fair share of challenges. In this episode, we give our thoughts on THE EFFECT OF HAVING A HOME BASE, based on twitter questions from the community. We chat about:
What is considered a home base ?
What function does it serve?
What are the benefits and challenges of having a home base.

We tackle the age old debate of sandbox vs railroad.
It's a topic that has come up a number of times, so we figured we would share our thoughts on the topic. These two concepts live on a spectrum where a healthy balance between both seems to work best for most. But where do we find ourselves on this spectrum and why?
In the episode we talk about:
ThinkDM's definition of purely sandbox and purely railroad. His article and analysis can be found here: https://thinkdm.org/2018/07/07/railroad-vs-sandbox/
Where we think we stand on the spectrum and why.
Why the term railroad gets a bad reputation.
The role of simulations and trust in determining style.
Giving advice to new DMs trying to run games in a certain style.
Our attempt at finding the perfect balance between the two: Branching.

In today's episode we talk about a fun, easy and system agnostic exercise you can play with your gaming group. Heavily inspired by the structure of the French Canadian "Ligue Nationale d'Improvisation" improv this simple yet elegant game can provide you a fun alternative to playing #DnD on Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. It requires little to no preparation and also giving everyone a framework to practice their roleplay and improv. As always, this is the deep dive, where Chris and I take a more unscripted approach.
In the episode we talk about:
New virtual layout (And this was our first time filming the entire episode in one take!)
The exercise's structure.
Benefits of this "scene" format.
Things to look out for.
Variants.
Optional rules.
Some questions.

We touch on:
1) What to do if the party faces a dungeon full of traps, but does not have a thief-type character?
2) How to avoid the game from halting, because of the many rolls players ask to make when exploring areas with potential traps?
3) Should traps be just damage/no damage and what else can they be?
4) How to give purpose to your traps, so they don't feel pointless?
PART 2:
Are your traps boring? Want to do more with you traps in your next #DnD or #TTRPG session? In this episode, we give you 7 tips on how to make traps fun and meaningful in your game.
The 7 things to consider are:
1) Integration of traps with other elements
2) Why is the trap there? Give it purpose
3) Variability of skill and diversity of challenge
4) How was it built? Give it lore/history
5) Puzzly traps - Easy to find, but hard to deal with
6) Frontload information - Bringing tension to every check
7) Make traps more than straight up damage - Alarm, environment change, conditions and more….

A free form, essay discussion about a great Game Master and Player tool: The Pufferfish moment. Is your D&D group struggling with role play? Does your TTRPG group want to improve their spotlight management? Try the Pufferfish Moment! This simple yet versatile variant of the talking stick helps Game Masters and Players alike to provide more structure to the ins and outs of roleplaying, because lets face it, we aren't all professional actors! I know, it sounds a little silly but ever since we started using it, our game has improved tremendously. These dual talking sticks help solve common role-playing issues by helping with:
1) Spotlight management.
2) Another way to facilitate pillar change.
3) Creates a clear distinction between when the players are in character.
4) It structures Roleplay in a very natural way.

A free form, essay discussion about a great Game Master tool: The Interrupt. This advanced Game Master tool is something you shouldn't run your games without as it allows you to naturally present situations to your players to force them to rethink their priorities you can really take control of your story's pace and add depth to your games. We go over the definition and talk about how we like to use this amazing tool in our games. Our chat also takes us to some of our favorite examples. The elements we talk about can be used individually or in combination with one another to help you build strong interrupts that will enrich your games. These elements are distilled in our short video which can be found here:
https://youtu.be/gxiXOxzX4ow
The strategies to creating strong interrupts are:
1) Tailoring the interrupt to a specific hero's bonds, past or ideals.
2) Make it consequential, the players should be able to look at the scenario and be able to deduce that something bad may happen if they don't engage with it. You could also consider giving them a reward if they succeed at solving the issue.
3) Take the opportunity to showcase lore, history or factions. Interrupts are a good opportunity to do exposition.
4) When things get slow, change the pillar of the game. Think about how the interrupt you are using can present a different pillar of the game to the table and use it to take your party there.
5) Use Seeding! Interrupts and seeding go very well together. Use a seed you've planted in the past to make your interrupt feel like it's a part of the world. Or plant several seeds for the first time with your interrupt.

Chris and Mat chat about how to run one on one TTRPG sessions. We go over the pros and cons of this format and strategies to integrate them into your group game. We also give ways to elevate these games beyond your players expectations. Some of the elements we talk about are easy to implement but others are more involved. These strategies include: 1) Tailoring the experience to the person you are running the game for! 2) Use the intimacy of the session to do exposition the character would already know, but that the player doesn't! 3) Reveal a big plot point, a hidden secret or something special about a NPC to the character you are playing with. 4) Give the character challenges in skills they excel at, give them a chance to shine beyond what they can do in a group setting.
Our community question this week is: If you were given the choice, would you prefer to play a campaign one on one with a game master you get along well with or would you prefer playing in a group that has great team synergy? Let us know your preference and tell us why!

Chris and Mat sit down to chat about how to keep your adventure going even if players can't make it to the gaming table. We will go over the strategies we use to make sure the expectation of attendance is clear to our players and we talk about the ways we cope with players missing games. Some of the strategies are easy to implement but others are more involved. They include:
1) Making the absent PC vanish temporarily.
2) Having the PC follow along, doing minimal actions.
3) Having someone else play this PC for the session.
4) Playing a filler episode or side quest.
5) Getting the player to help come up with a narrative reason for the character's absence.
6) Running a one-shot game using the same setting to help expand lore, NPC background, etc.

In this episode Chris and Mat sit down to chat about how to prepare awesome combat encounters. We will go over the steps we take to make meaningful and fun combat encounters in our games of Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer and other Tabletop Role-Playing Games. The tips we will touch on relate to the following:
1) Thinking about what you are using combat for. What are your intentions?
2) Add objectives to your combat, they can be mutually exclusive or layered to add complexity.
3) Create awesome rewards and use failure to move plot and intrigue forward.
4) Who the party is fighting, which factions, what are their tactics?
5) Where the fight is happening, does the encounter have to happen here? why?
6) When is the encounter happening? Is the combat time sensitive, will there be a suprise or reinforcements?
7) Using possible solutions as inspiration for diversifying your encounters. Does your encounter include the proper tools for alternative methods of success?

Player powers, feats, stunts or abilities and where they fit into our PC creation.
Some of our favorite player powers (feel free to steal these for your games!)
How we consider our place in the party when creating a PC.
Our method of developing a backstory and leaving gaps in the story to facilitate integration into the world and plot.
We look through and comment on the steps found in the 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook.
We describe the way we created Player Characters for our games with our players and we talk about the pros and cons of our methods.
