The DevonLive/Herald Express Torquay United Podcast – Born under the Ministand. Broadcast worldwide.
It's Thursday and it's Podcast time with Richard Hughes and David Thomas this week - while Guy Henderson's suns himself in Portugal. But there is much to discuss after two good wins and a chat with Aaron Downes.
Richard and David talk about Torquay's defence in the last two games, with only one goal shipped after that move from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 - and the emergence of Ollie Tomlinson as a first-team player.
The duo also talk about the forthcoming games against Slough Town and Braintree Town over the Bank Holiday weekend - and keep their fingers crossed for a fit Aaron Jarvis.
David also remembers former goalkeeper Andy Donnelly, who came from the town that Richard drove to on Saturday... That and some more in this Guy-less pod. Have a great Bank Holiday and Come on you Yellows!
Hello again from the Torquay United Yellow Army Podcast team (Richard Hughes and Guy Henderson, with a little bit of techy stuff by Daniel Clark). This week the Podders go over the games against Worthing and Chippenham Town - so lots to talk about there.
We also hear from Gary Johnson about those two games and the forthcoming visit to St Albans City on Saturday. Games are also getting longer and that might have an impact on players' fitness. Is it time to introduce five subs out of seven in the National League like the EFL? Even though the season has already started?
Guy gets serious for a moment after some unpleasantness on the Popside, and then the duo get all misty eyed as Guy opens another of Mike Griffiths' Esso World Cup 1970 coins. Who did he get this time? Was it Bobby Moore?
All the best to the Lionesses on Sunday - see you all next week.
Here we go again - the Podcasters, Guy Henderson and Richard Hughes, get together for a chat about that first game of the National South season, which was a 2-2 draw at Dover Athletic on Saturday.
The chat includes a look at the game and what went wrong - and also what went right! We hear from manager Gary Johnson about that, too. Another talking point was the inability of Dover to find Torquay's website commentary team a plug socket, and Radio Devon's failure to get on air. And the fact that a Radio Kent commentary was the only way to listen to the game for Gulls' fans.
And then the guys look forward to home games and the chance to 'Hit The Ground Running' Again! Seven points on the board by next week, says Richard. Wouldn't that be nice.
Here we are then - just days away from the start of a massive season for the Gulls, with promotion back to the National League the stated aim, and a surprise signing announcement by the club that has got the fans jumping for joy.
Torquay need to Hit The Ground Running at Dover Athletic on Saturday, and the signing of former QPR loan winger Dillon De Silva is a huge bonus on the eve of day one, with the squad now standing at 21 and looking pretty strong.
Guy Henderson and Richard Hughes are joined in the car studio by David Thomas for a chat about hopes and dreams, and exciting times. We also hear from Gary Johnson about the season ahead and Saturday's trip to Dover - and from Dillon himself, who is full of beans after coming back to a club he loves.
Time to Hit The Ground Running, then. Here we go...
Guy Henderson took the Podcast outside this afternoon when he had a chat with some guests at Torquay United's season ticket holder training session at Plainmoor, while Richard Hughes (being a free-loading journo) was left at home doing the housework.
We hear from life president Mervyn Benney, fans Julian Head and Bob Coles, and assistant manager Aaron Downes from the open session - and get their takes on the forthcoming National League South season. Just don't mention the cricket!
Guy tells Richard all about it and the pair enjoy chatting about that win against Exeter City, which Richard predicted, the forthcoming friendly against Southampton B, and the start of the Western League, with new boys Brixham kicking off their season this Saturday, along with Buckland Athletic.
Getting excited? They are. Until next week - Come On You Yellows!
Hello again from the Torquay United Yellow Army Podcasters, who return after a three-week summer break to chew over the fat of pre-season. Richard Hughes and Guy Henderson talk about how the new Torquay United squad is shaping up - and how it has coped so far in two behind-closed-doors friendlies, and against Plymouth Argyle.
It is interesting times following that positive 1-1 draw against Argyle, which has the fans looking forward to the season even more. Furthermore, is it Brad or Bradley? There is also news on the enigma that is Manny Duku - and Guy's mate Tom (plus lots more Argyle fans) say Finlay Craske could be a great signing after he starred against the Pilgrims.
All good then, as Richard shakes off his jet lag and Guy shows off his tan. It's Exeter City on Saturday - and Guy is finally a paying customer, and has a card to prove it.
The Podcasters become a trio again as David Thomas joins Guy Henderson and Richard Hughes in the garden of the Paignton studio. You would think - with little news coming out of Plainmoor before the return of the players next Thursday - there was little to chat about, but with David being in the studio, there was much to discuss.
Darren Moore's shock departure from Sheffield Wednesday, and the positive goalkeeping situation at the Torquay get an aring, while one former Gull has been signed by Watford after making a go of it in France. And there is a painful memory to dig up - as it is two years since the nightmare ending at Ashton Gate!
The podcast will take a three-week break now, while Richard goes off on holiday, but will return with so very much more to talk about on Thursday, July 20. By then there will be much more news and hopefully some words from the Gaffer. Until then, happy pre-season, and enjoy the sun...
We are slap bang in the middle of the quiet time really, aren't we? Signings are more or less done, and only a few weeks before the players get back for pre-season training, so for the Podcasters material is in short supply.
However, the birds enjoyed listening to the two old men talking their way through the issues of the day while drinking coffee in a sunny garden - and we get the final four teams in Guy's rundown of who Torquay United will be playing in the National League South this coming season. Weymouth and Yeovil Town, it turns out, have their fair share of ex-Gulls players, while we learn we have never played Worthing, so them and Aveley will be new territory for the Gulls...
Hopefully there will be a bit more news next week for the duo to get their teeth into - but for now, like the birds, enjoy the sound of two old men sitting in a Paignton garden talking about football. What's not to like? Come on you Yellows!
In this week's Torquay United Yellow Army Podcast Guy Henderson is subjected to Richard Hughes' childish theme tune antics as he labours the Lewis Collins joke for another week. Don't worry, he will get bored of it soon.
After the winger signed for Torquay last week, the hardly-dynamic duo muse over the quality of Gary Johnson's squad for the National League South season, and once again they look at some more of the teams that the Gulls will be coming up against - including the two nearest rivals.
There is more friendly news, some congratulations for the Hammers, and banter about hummus to complete the journey this week - with pre-season now not that far away. Exciting, isn't it?
This week's Torquay United Yellow Army Podcast goes back to nature, insofar as Richard Hughes and Guy Henderson are sitting outside in the sunshine in Babbacombe while the birds sing their songs around them.
There is quite a lot to discuss, but after a couple of weeks of signings, there are no new players in the past seven days to talk about. There are many ex-players though, and Guy's looks at another five teams we will be playing this season in our alphabetical run-through. No tunnels this week, but plenty of musicians. Who remembers Thousand Yard Stare? Richard does.
So get your cup of tea and biscuits, or do whatever you do while listening to the pod, and enjoy another instalment of the Greatest Torquay United Podcast ever known to man or woman - with added birdies, of course.
Quick note - unless something dramatic happens over the next week, the pod will be taking a break next Thursday, and return the following week.
It's been a good week for Torquay United with two more signings announced - Jack Stobbs and Bradley Ash - and the Podcasters take a look at what that means to Gary Johnson's growing squad.
The dogs get involved as Richard Hughes and Guy Henderson talk about the squad, and some speculation surrounding assistant manager Aaron Downes, and where Torquay might be playing their friendlies after it turned out they will be welcoming Exeter City, but won't be going to Buckland Athletic this summer.
There is more tunnel fun as Guy talks about the second five teams in our alphabetical journey around the National South. Mick Jagger, Toploader and Farnborough's finest guitar heroes Mega City Four, and lots of former Gulls, all feature.
The sun's out - enjoy it. You could put the Podcast on your walkman, but you will need a C45 tape for this one. However you listen, till next time, all together now: "Come on You Yellows."
Here comes the summer, Podcast fans - just look at the weather. It couldn't be more summery, right? While the players and the Gaffer enjoy their break, there is no such thing for the Podcasters as Richard Hughes joins Guy Henderson in the Paignton studio for more tomfoolery and high jinx.
Expect chat about the four new signings - Mark Halstead, Tom Lapslie, Kevin Dawson and Ollie Tomlinson. Some good news at last! And some childish banter about tunnels. Really. Also, Guy starts his alphabetical journey through the teams the Gulls will be playing in the National League South this season - starting with Aveley (no, nor did we!)
All good fun as the Torquay United Yellow Army Podcast begins to relax a little after that late-season drama. One might even say we are looking forward to August already. Come on you Yellows...
It's all over, and it's relegation for Torquay United once more. We look back on the Wrexham game at the end of a dismal season, and look ahead to what might be to come. Where, for instance, are the local heroes, and why do we so rarely pick one?
it's a big week, and no mistake. Relegation looms but isn't certain yet, the circus is coming to town, and the Gaffer has some big news for us.
We crunch all the numbers for you on the podcast, and come up with an optimist's scenario that sees United saving themselves from the drop. And we have a question that might stump even the most avid stats fiends among you. Oh, and there are dogs, and a squeaky toy.
After chatting to Gary Johnson the regulars are joined by press box veteran David Thomas to crunch the numbers and discuss everything from Eastleigh's mastery of the dark arts and Frank Nouble's deft double to wing backs on the rampage at Kidderminster. And, we discuss the merits of having a villain or two lurking in the midfield.
The most important Easter for 2,000 years? Torquay United certainly can't afford to put their feet up and watch Disney Time this Easter - there's some serious work to be done, starting tomorrow afternoon against Eastleigh.
There's a buoyant mood in the camp after Tuesday night's win at Boreham Wood, and Gary Johnson fills us in on who's in and who's out. But as all football fans know, it's the hope that kills you at this time of the season. We chat about the pressure building on the Gulls, take a trip down Memory Lane to a memorable play-off clash with Saturday's opponents and read a bedtime story for you late-night listeners.
Excitement at Plainmoor on the last day for National League transfers, the demise of Soccer AM and a visit from DIY Dave
There are just 10 games to go now, and Torquay United have some serious work to do. This week we talk about Wealdstone, Gateshead, Corie Andrews and Mark Halstead as well as looking at the "existential" threat relegation could pose to our beloved football club.
This has been a tough week for Torquay United's management, players and fans - and now we go to Aldershot Town on Saturday for what is another six-pointer. Richard Hughes and David Thomas discuss the Southend United and Bromley defeats - and hear from Gary Johnson ahead of another big weekend.
David Thomas and Richard Hughes talk about referees and whether or not they are able to make up their own minds or just follow their rulebooks. It has been a busy week for Torquay United, with one good win and one frustrating defeat. And there are some big games on the horizon. There is much to discuss.
Richard Hughes and David Thomas look at the two games against Barnet, and Tuesday night's massive game against Dorking Wanderers. David puts a 'big red ring' around that game in his calendar.
This week Richard Hughes is joined by David Thomas and the pair discuss the 2-1 defeat against Notts County, and the forthcoming double-header against Barnet. Meanwhile, Richard asks David: 'Is press box etiquette a thing of the past?'
At the end of a very good week for the Gulls, Guy and Richard rinse the life out of a joke prompted by the arrival of a new player - and open the packaging on a 52-year-old Esso World Cup collection coin to reveal which player has been hidden inside since 1970.
It's just like going back to the days of the first Covid lockdown, when there was no actual football to talk about because there were no matches being played. Postponements at Boreham Wood and Woking this week have given United a bit of down-time, and longer to prepare for the big six-pointer at home to Maidstone this Saturday. And, we ask, is it Deal or no Deal for our plucky cup fighters?
United have won two games back to back for the first time this season as they head into a tough double-header this weekend. First up it's Boreham Wood on Saturday, then in-form Woking on Tuesday night, both games away from home. The bookies don't fancy them at all, but the podcasters decide they might just pop a guinea on the Gulls.

There are no flies on Gary Johnson - of that we can assure you. This week's packed podcast is interrupted briefly by the arrival of a pesky fly, but that doesn't mean we haven't got much to discuss.

But there's no rest in sight as the Gulls embark on the last nine games of a season in which they have maintained a title challenge throughout.

Torquay United need to get their Mojo back - on that we can all agree. On this week's podcast Gaffer Gary Johnson talks about getting some confidence back into the team, and David Thomas drops by to chat about recent results and the turmoil in the National League

Times have changed in the world of football, and these days social media means one unguarded comment can fly around the world in seconds. Has the Plainmoor bubble burst? It's the question that has to be asked after a stuttering start to 2021 from Torquay United. After such a sparkling opening to the season which saw the Gulls soar clear at the top of the league, the points have been hard to come by in recent weeks.

Clint Boulton, who has died at the age of just 72, was a real favourite among the Torquay United fans of the 1970s. With his drooping moustache and flowing locks, he was the epitome of the Seventies footballer.
There's a special guest on the line today as the podcast plays Christmas Quizball. We welcome the pundit's pundit Mr David Thomas to pit his wits against Richard in a series of gulls-related questions.
There';s only one word to describe the last week for Torquay United, and the Gaffer came up with it in his post-match press conference - "Cosmic"

Back in 1971, when Torquay United fancied their chances of getting out of the old Third Division, one of their players picked up a guitar and recorded a song about it. Torquay United's War Cry didn't get Dick Edwards a spot on Top of the Pops, but the song has become a hard-to-find collector's item for Gulls fans ever since. Now, thanks to regular listener Kevin Stoyle, you're going to hear it.

AS GOOD as anything we saw in the National League South season? The podcasters have been purring over that performance against Chesterfield the other night – as good an all-round team performance as we’ve seen for a couple of seasons, and yet another example of staying sharp right to the end of the game, however long it might be.
Torquay United's season has begun at long last, and there have been good and bad things to take away from the first two matches. But as social media pundits go into an early season meltdown, we reckon the good outweighs the bad from the games against Stockport and Eastleigh.
Football is back at last - and we can't wait. By Saturday it will have been 217 days since a competitive football match was played at Plainmoor, and the opening fixture of the 2020/21 season is a big one.
It's a strange podcast this week. We thought we knew what was going on with regard to the start of the season in the light of the coronavirus crisis, but then we realised we didn't know at all.
So, having recorded some of this week's podcast, we decided to stop and wait for the National League to come up with answer to the question we are all asking - when will there be football, and will be able to go and see it when there is?
It's an auspicious day for all Torquay United fans today. All is revealed in this week's podcast, along with much more about the latest friendlies, live streaming and the demise of Macclesfield Town.

NOBODY who was there will ever forget the moment John Uzzell's professional football career was brought to an end when an aerial challenge with Brentford striker Gary Blissett left him with injuries his surgeon said were equivalent to a 70mph car crash. IT'S Q-time in the A to Z of Torquay United, and that gives our podcasters a few headaches in trying to fill a team of 'Q' players. In fact there's only one, so this week it could have been The Joe Quigley Show. To regionalise or not to regionalise? That is the question for clubs in the National League and League Two after a football columnist started the whole debate again with a weekend article.
There are plenty of benefits for clubs like Torquay United from a north/south split, not least in the travelling costs and time involved in getting to games in places like Hartlepool and Barrow. But will clubs in the higher reaches of League Two see it in quite the same way?
