A priest will often award forgiveness after a confession, repentance, and restitution.

This is an important triple concept even outside of religion, and it is not discussed enough. The philosophy applies to individuals, groups, businesses, and even government authorities guarding the marketplace.

• Groupthink and conformity
• The Asch conformity experiments
• Authority bias and obedience
• Cognitive diversity
• The wisdom—and limits—of crowds
• Decentralized decision-making
• Libertarian philosophy and individual responsibility
• Historical examples of failed consensus

Given a definition of socialism, the goal seems to be equity, but the popular dialogue seems to be fairness and affordability.

The index of economic freedom seems to show the general population is best in the most free marketplace, for both the richest and for the poorest. This means neglecting the gap between the richest and the poorest.

Dave Smith emphasizes the bloody price that often goes along with communism and socialism. Milton Friedman promotes the basic necessary functions of any government.

The index of economic freedom rates various countries upon freedom. This is a pretty good view of which countries are the most socialist. Plus it looks obvious that freedom highly correlates with the quality of life for the entire population.

REBROADCAST OF EPISODE 222

We examine the movie Barbie from the standpoint of social interactions and libertarian principles. We can conclude that Barbie is a wonderful satire with multiple nuances for consideration. The libertarian principle of personal freedom, and the relationship to the freedom of others, is the most important take away.

Watch our video: The Movie "Barbie" and Libertarian Principles (ep 222)

Barbie is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the eponymous fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous animated films and specials. Starring Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film follows them on a journey of self-discovery through Barbieland and the real world following an existential crisis. It is also a commentary regarding patriarchy and the effects of feminism. The supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.

A live-action Barbie film was announced in September 2009 by Universal Pictures with Laurence Mark producing. Development began in April 2014, when Sony Pictures acquired the film rights. Following multiple writer and director changes and the casting of Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway as Barbie, the rights were transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018. Robbie was cast in 2019, after Gal Gadot turned down the role due to scheduling conflicts, and Gerwig was announced as director and co-writer with Baumbach in 2020. The rest of the cast was announced in early 2022. Principal photography occurred primarily at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, England, and at the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles from March to July 2022.

Barbie premiered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023, and was released in the United States on July 21. Its concurrent release with Universal Pictures' Oppenheimer was the catalyst of the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, encouraging audiences to see both films as a double feature.

The film grossed $1.446 billion and achieved several milestones, including the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time. Named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, it received widespread critical acclaim and other accolades, including eight Academy Award nominations (among them Best Picture), winning Best Original Song for "What Was I Made For?"; the song also won Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song while Barbie was awarded Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

Until recently, our leaders were very good at slow reveals that might negatively affect our voting population. That is not the style of the Trump administration! And one advantage is that we get to see almost everything even when they try to tell us that’s not what we are seeing.

Here are a few silver lining revelations from the last few years:
* The new individual podcast journalists like Dave Smith are revealing the truth about our current military conflicts. And they are revisiting the real causes for past wars. * Covid waked up the entire country when it comes to our flawed leadership and medical complex * The Joe Biden presidency alerted our country to fantasy power positioning * We can finally see the connection between government spending and inflation

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we dive deep into one of the most defining economic turning points in modern U.S. history: 1971, the year President Nixon ended the Bretton Woods agreement and removed the dollar from the gold standard. This decision—often overlooked—set in motion decades of inflation, currency distortion, and financial instability that still affect every aspect of life today. Drawing on Dave Smith’s compelling explanation, we explore how radically different the world could have been if the U.S. had maintained a stable, sound money supply. Imagine a world without runaway inflation, without the boom-bust cycles created by loose monetary policy, and without the government’s ability to quietly tax citizens through currency debasement. Smith argues that abandoning gold didn’t just change the economy—it changed society, culture, and global power dynamics. We break down:
* What exactly happened in 1971 * Why stable money is foundational to liberty and psychological well-being * How inflation quietly alters behavior, incentives, and family life * How fiat money fuels political overreach, endless wars, and corporate distortion * What individuals and communities can do now, in an unstable financial era * Sound money solutions, from decentralization to Bitcoin to local alternatives

If you've ever wondered why everything feels more expensive, more chaotic, and more distorted than it used to, this episode connects the dots. Understanding 1971 is the first step—deciding what to do next is the challenge we tackle together.

Are there two Americas or is the United States alternating between open and closed system characteristics? We listen to some information from Elephant in the room podcast about the factors that has led to the Democrats and Republicans having a serious gap between their ideologies. We discuss how this might be an issue with openness, a personality and group characteristic, between the two parties. We touch on the fact that while the Democrats are more open, the Republicans are more conscientious. Some problems are more favorably addressed by one or the other.

OK, so the 1969 Supreme Court decision about free speech was very nice. The problem is that in today’s world it simply is not enough.

That decision about illegal speech was good, and should continue. But speech that invites violence should be called out socially. In other words, criticize people that use terms like Nazi or Hitler or the N-word. People have been getting away with this kind of talk as if it is free speech. Yes, but It is inappropriate free speech. And then maybe we can use the same kind of standards for judging the activities of other countries.

Both parties, but especially the Democrats, are defaulting to team competition in their quest to contribute. We talk about large social systems moving between loose and tight, open and closed. Effective systems vary these conditions based on the environment. The United States needs both the left, which is concerned with affiliation/care and the right which is concerned with achievement and conscientiousness. And effective system needs to act like a water faucet between these two, opening and closing based on the particular problem to be solved. We talk about the Virginia redistricting. And,We listen to Victor Hanson and Rahm Emanuel on the problems with the Democrats.

It helps to expose the exaggerations from both political sides. The mainstream media started being exposed with the internet and with “fake news” Trump. But the war “reporting” makes the audience go further toward alternative media.

  1. It is exposing both the power and the irrelevance of the sophisticated military. In other words, it is not enough.

  2. It reveals, again, that a country’s population does not automatically cheer for the invading “saviors”.

  3. Hopefully, the definitions for sovereign nations and proxies will be clarified when this goes further.

Congressmen and congresswomen could take a page out of the nostalgic classic series, "Leave it to Beaver." The interpersonal dynamics depicted in the series portray three elements of the libertarian ideals that are needed for functioning of the country. These are personal freedom and responsibility, courtesy and boundaries, and virtue. John Adams said that virtue is was required for a representative public to function. We ask the question if we have lost the virtue that was part of the fabric of 1960.

Why do people believe things that clearly contradict reality? Why does humor often reveal truths that political debate hides?

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we explore the fascinating connection between humor, self-deception, and political belief systems. From cognitive dissonance to tribal thinking, politics is often less about logic and more about the psychological tricks our brains play on us.

We discuss how comedy can expose contradictions in ideology, how voters rationalize bad policies, and why self-deception may be one of the most powerful forces shaping political narratives.

Topics include:* The psychology behind political self-deception * Why humor is a powerful tool for revealing truth * Cognitive biases that influence voters * Tribalism and identity in modern politics * Why people defend ideas even when evidence says otherwise

If you enjoy conversations that mix psychology, political philosophy, humor, and libertarian perspectives, this episode will give you plenty to think (and laugh) about.

This is a rebroadcast from ep 73

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we examine the real problem with drugs and why government policies have consistently failed to address addiction and substance abuse.

While governments struggle to manage even legal drugs like alcohol, prescription medications, and opioids, their approach to illegal drugs through the War on Drugs has been even more destructive. Decades of prohibition, criminalization, and enforcement have created black markets, fueled organized crime, and often made addiction problems worse rather than better.

From a psychological and libertarian perspective, we discuss how human behavior, incentives, and public policy intersect when it comes to drugs. Why do prohibition policies fail? What psychological realities about addiction do policymakers ignore? And why have some countries taken approaches that reduce harm more effectively?

We also explore how alternative drug policies used around the world, including harm reduction and decriminalization strategies, have produced better outcomes than the traditional War on Drugs model.

Topics discussed include:
• The psychology of addiction
• Government failure in drug policy
• The unintended consequences of prohibition
• The War on Drugs and black markets
• Harm reduction and alternative drug policies
• What libertarian principles say about drug legalization and personal liberty

If you're interested in psychology, economics, public policy, and libertarian philosophy, this episode offers a thoughtful discussion about why drug policy often goes wrong—and what could work better.

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we explore the psychology behind bureaucracy through the lens of organizational behavior and libertarian thought.

Why do bureaucratic systems grow?
How do group dynamics shape decision-making?
And what happens to human productivity when structure turns into stagnation?

We break down the social group phenomena that define bureaucratic institutions — from diffusion of responsibility and hierarchy reinforcement to risk aversion and institutional inertia. Using insights from organizational psychology, we discuss how centralized systems impact creativity, innovation, and individual motivation.

We also examine a powerful thematic clip from Jupiter Ascending that highlights the absurdity and complexity of intergalactic bureaucracy — and why it feels so familiar in our own world.

If you're interested in psychology, libertarian philosophy, organizational reform, and the human side of productivity, this episode connects the dots between theory, culture, and real-world systems.

I am sorry to get myself upset about the administration’s indirect and even deceptive communications over Venezuela activities. This is nothing new from our government, but it does seem worse than usual.

At first, this was about blowing up speed boats that could be taking illegal drugs to the United States. Never mind that Venezuela is admittedly a minor player in the drug trade. And never mind that the US population is willingly buying these drugs. Also, when are we going to admit that our heavy handed strategies for enforcing drug laws are not reducing drugs and are increasing our already world record high jail sentencing rates.

Is this some sort of joke that we are violently arresting a foreign leader for possession of machine guns?

Of course, this whole thing is probably about our legitimate fear of hemisphere influence by China, Russia, and Iran. So what is the red line that cannot be crossed before justified military intervention in a sovereign country? And should we apply that same red line definition for our country’s activities on the other side of the world?

This is a reboardcast of ep. 180

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, Julie dives deep into the hidden psychological mechanisms behind secrecy and its impact on individuals, groups, and society at large. She explores how groups naturally create boundaries to protect their identity and cohesion—but at a high cost. When secrecy becomes normalized, it not only isolates members from the outside world but also distorts truth, weakens integrity, and impairs sound decision-making.

Julie connects these ideas to the broader political and social landscape, examining how excessive government document classification reflects an over-boundaried system that alienates citizens from vital information. By understanding the psychology of secrecy, we can better recognize how hidden agendas and restricted access to knowledge foster mistrust, manipulation, and corruption.

This episode challenges listeners to think critically about transparency, freedom, and accountability—both in personal relationships and within powerful institutions.

The new and exciting Israel-Gaza deal proposed by Trump apparently has the same flaw as before. In other words, I have not heard an answer to the following questions concerning the long-term. Is there full equal citizenship? Or is there a separate state? Without an answer, we are doomed to witness perpetual abuse as before. The United States had a similar dilemma concerning slavery, and then concerning American Indians.

However, Megan Kelly points out how amazing Trump is no matter how much he exaggerates or boasts.

This is a rebroadcast of ep 168

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, Julie reviews a report on racial bias published by the Association for Psychological Science. We take a deep dive into what modern research says about racism, bias, and systemic disparities—and how these ideas are often misunderstood in public discussions.

Julie explains the difference between racism, which involves hostility or intent, and bias, which can occur without conscious awareness or malice. We explore implicit bias (unconscious) versus explicit bias (conscious), and how these affect perception, behavior, and policy.

The conversation also challenges the effectiveness of diversity training programs aimed at changing individual attitudes. Instead, the evidence shows that targeting institutional disparities produces better outcomes—aligning with the Libertarian perspective that systems, not thought policing, should be the focus of reform.

Join us as we blend psychological science, critical thinking, and Libertarian philosophy to better understand one of today’s most controversial and emotionally charged topics.

This is a rebroadcast of ep 173

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we take a deeper look at the idea that America is flawed—but who really does it better? Inspired by the honest insights of Ron Paul, we explore the structural, political, and cultural flaws that continue to affect freedom and governance in the United States.

While critics and patriots alike can agree the U.S. has serious issues—corruption, bureaucracy, surveillance, and economic manipulation—this discussion also reminds us that perfection doesn’t exist anywhere. By examining the Index of Economic Freedom, we compare the U.S. to countries that rank higher in liberty, transparency, and limited government, searching for lessons and realistic solutions.

Join us for a thoughtful libertarian perspective that challenges mainstream narratives, encourages critical thinking, and asks the essential question: If America is broken, what’s the better model—and why?

👉 Listen, think, and question with Libertarians Talk Psychology—where logic and liberty meet.

This is a rebroadcast of ep 198

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we dive deeper into the theme of tribalism and its psychological impact on modern populism. Drawing from the insights of historian Victor Davis Hanson, we examine how tribalism has developed in America and what it reveals about our cultural and political divides. We connect Hanson’s perspective to research on implicit and explicit attitudes, exploring how hidden biases shape group identity and influence social behavior.

Julie highlights the role of the elites and media in framing populism, often portraying its supporters as outsiders or threats, while we discuss how psychology sheds light on the true motivations and struggles of the populist movement. The conversation raises key questions: Are implicit biases inevitable? Can we move beyond tribal divisions? And how does populism challenge the power structures of modern society?

This is a thought-provoking discussion for anyone interested in the crossroads of psychology, politics, and culture, offering both libertarian analysis and evidence from psychological science.

This is a rebroadcast of ep. 119

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we dive into the Netflix series Narcos and connect its gritty storytelling to America’s decades-long War on Drugs. While Narcos shows the DEA and U.S. forces hunting down Colombian drug lords, the real question is whether U.S. policy fueled the very chaos it claimed to fight. Was the United States truly protecting its citizens, or did political interests, corruption, and unintended consequences make the situation worse?

We explore how prohibition, black markets, and government intervention shaped the rise of cartels, and what psychology tells us about power, control, and human behavior in this so-called “war.” This conversation challenges mainstream narratives and asks listeners to think critically about history, politics, and the human cost of the War on Drugs.

This is a rebroadcast of ep. 194

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, Julie and Mike take a deep dive into the film Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, set in the tense days before the Nazi invasion of the United Kingdom during World War II. We explore how Churchill’s leadership illustrates the value of cognitive diversity—bringing different perspectives, problem-solving styles, and viewpoints together to navigate crisis situations.

Our conversation connects the lessons of the past to today’s challenges, showing how cognitive diversity applies not only to wartime leadership but also to modern political decision-making, organizational strategies, and personal growth. We touch on related themes such as Rand Paul’s independent thinking, the impact of masking requirements on public debate, and the role of YouTube in shaping political and cultural discourse.

If you’re interested in psychology, politics, history, and how diverse minds can solve complex problems, this episode offers a unique libertarian perspective on one of the most powerful historical dramas of recent years.

(Rebroadcast of ep. 77)

In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we tackle the provocative question: Is it always the government’s fault? While government intervention often makes existing problems worse, the truth is more complicated. Sometimes, the public itself resists needed reforms or rejects practical solutions—even when they could make life better.

We dig into how policies and cultural attitudes interact, touching on examples such as Rand Paul’s political positions, YouTube’s role in public discourse, and the heated debates over masking requirements. This candid conversation blends psychology, politics, and libertarian principles, challenging listeners to question not only government overreach but also our own responsibility in shaping society.

Whether you’re a libertarian thinker, political skeptic, or just curious about the intersection of psychology and government policy, this episode offers thought-provoking insights you won’t want to miss.

Thank goodness the cancel culture world has begun to allow true free speech, with the use of the Internet! (Maybe we should be thanking Elon Musk and possibly Trump!) Governments have always attempted to control communication to the masses, and socialist systems have been the worst.

But in today’s world, maybe we should just allow these socialist style cities and states to try out their idiotic ideas. With our evolving free speech, the population should eventually see the poor results. Finally!

We piggyback on Victor Davis Hanson's characterization of the current change being a counter revolutionary move after the country was taken over by the left political ideology. Julie proposes three observations about the election. A full return of the positive masculine depicted in the election of Trump and particularly in his cabinet selections. Secondly she talks about the zigzag process between the left and the right political sentiments and how that's the natural flow between the instincts of warmth versus competence. We discussed how that can be corrupted by unchecked power. Finally we observe that the system works despite the fact that it's taken 40 years and the destructive elements of the various industrial complexes.

Wow! That election was exciting!

So the next question is, now what? Here are some of our most important issues, and a few hopes and dreams for each of them: Continue to expose the truth (and maybe Institute consequences over damages) No new wars! (And stop existing wars, also work some sort of alternative deal with the military industrial complex.) Bring the economy under control, using tools like the budget, federal reserve, and removing collusion with big business. Expose the media when it is not truthful and emphasize the first amendment. (Stop government collusion with news media outlets). Let RFK Junior pursue the medical complex, especially concerning our foods.

Julie discusses the presentation by Jordan Peterson regarding the Big Five factor personality model and Donald Trump. According to Peterson, and Julie agrees, Trump is extremely extroverted and highly conscientious. Where as Peterson considers him probably agreeable, Julie thinks he is more middle of the road on agreeableness. She believes temperament style and cognitive style derived from the Myers Briggs might also better characterize Trump as an artisan and extremely quick in responding in real time to challenges and opportunities.

She agrees with Peterson that efforts to classify Trump as narcissistic or dictatorial lack validity.

Rebroadcast of ep 35

There is plenty of Biden administration incompetence in our departure from Afghanistan. But the real problem is much bigger. Our society is way to accepting of war in general, and we are too accepting of liars who get us into these wars. What ever happened to prosecuting liars and to our country’s check and balance procedure of declaring wars?

We review the latest on Jordan Peterson's clash with the regulators in Canada, as looked at by Scott Adams.

Scott Adams describes the humorous side of the predicament, especially the idea that there is no one in Canada that is volunteering to teach Jordan Peterson about social media.

Julie's first hand experience with regulatory boards and especially when elites are given power over others, predicts that Peterson's efforts to resist or to make rational the interaction, will not be successful. We discuss the realities of regulatory power and how that power can be abused with few consequences.

Julie reviews some research that suggests people have a pro-Black bias, including those from the Conservative side of the political spectrum. This type of finding complicates issues when it comes to trying to be fair to one group-- without being unfair to another group. The finding is contrary to the idea of oppressors and victims seemingly put forth in Critical Race Theory. We also briefly discuss issues of selection testing.

If we are going to claim that the nuclear bombings of Japan are obviously evil, then we need to at least look at the circumstances leading to the decision. Circumstances like: amount of Japanese bombing before the nuclear attacks, American lives lost before the nuclear attacks, and the extent of worldwide famine and starvation related to the possibility of extending the war.

However, Dave Smith is probably on to something when he claims that the United States uses World War II as some sort of justification for needless aggressive behaviors since then. Is this all about a human tendency to compete for resources?

We listened with frustration to an episode of Stuff You Should Know, in which they blame sellers for inflation in this country and call it Greedflation. The problem was that they were very close to seeing the truth, which is that government printed money causing the inflation to begin with, and then colluded with businesses to control natural competition. The resulting inflation is because of government greed not grocery store greed!

Scott Rasmussen, speaking on the Daily Signal, revealed that the elites are more willing to cheat than the average person. The "elites" make up one percent of the population, have a higher income and have a post graduate degree. They are influential in government and in the society.

Yet, 69% of the politically obsessed portion of the elites, and over 1/3 of all elites, report that they are willing to cheat to get their way.

We discuss what this means and why this is so important in a libertarian context. The elites believe they know better than the other 99% and so should be making decisions for others. This is in direct opposition to the ideas upon which the country was founded, and the ideas which have been proven to be successful for human societies over and over.

A Dr. Thomas Sowell short YouTube video criticizing our existing education system has generated an extended family discussion. Several questions emerge: Do we have a problem with our education system? Does our existing education system shortchange minorities?

Why is our system flawed, and what is a better solution? Many people have suggested that a voucher plan similar to the G.I. bill would at least give education systems an incentive to compete, instead of relying on monopoly power.

Dr. Walter Williams, another famous economist, has made an inflammatory statement about education, “If the Ku Klux Klan wanted to sabotage black academic excellence, they couldn’t find a tool more effective than the public school systems in most major cities.”

Dave Smith made some interesting factual observations about the Covid fiasco in his part of the problem podcast. This was in response to a Bill Maher interview of Andrew Cuomo. In addition, Rob Bernstein made the point that government tends to seize power and create sweeping regulations whenever they get an opportunity. It does not seem to matter if government admits to having incomplete information, when it is obvious the decision making should be left to individuals.

One additional observation is that bad government actors just simply move ahead to the next crisis. In order for our society to start heading back in the proper direction there need to be consequences. Government officials who clearly lied to us in order to gain power or Give financial opportunity to donors, need to be fired and put in jail. Those donor companies need to be punished also. Someday, maybe we can even get to the point where end users have the alternative to either use the government program or an alternative private program.

It is understandable for the victim side to go apeshit crazy on aggressors, provided the victim side does not kill innocent citizens.

There are several ways to get bogged down in the mud when considering the Israel-Palestinian conflicts:
* It sure does seem like a wild coincidence that every time a current war slows down we find a new war: Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and now Israel. * Vivek Ramaswamy points out that the United States is bad about paying for both sides of many conflicts. * It is too simple to hope that Palestinians could be given equal voting and citizen rights, since they have a large population and democracy would be in their favor.

One possible solution, although unlikely, is to establish a free trade zone for the Palestinian area. This would mean no government, no government leaders, just individual freedom to trade and protect against individual injustices. The sticky item would be protecting against outside country invaders.
