Whether Epstein killed himself or not, his death has brought a number of AI companies focused on data collection and predictive policing to the public's attention. He was an investor in Carbyne911 - an Israeli company offering next gen 911 response technology that also collects all of the data on your phone. Carbyne911 isn't alone in this as Palantir has been piloting predictive policing efforts in major cities around the US and the attorney general has stepped up his calls for this new technology.

You could get thousands of dollars for your face being used in a data set published by the University of Washington to train facial recognition algorithms. MegaFace is the data set in question, which was put together by Yahoo and Flickr in 2014 before being used by UW (with some changes) in a facial recognition competition. Now a lawsuit is being brought forward under an old Illinois privacy law to go after the companies who took part in this.

Google showcased its latest advancement in AI at the most recent I/O conference - Google Duplex. This new technology is amazing! Google has achieved real, human-like conversations to make bookings at restaurants, salons, and other businesses. Despite this technical achievement, other questions are raised. Clearly, the individuals who interacted with Duplex in the examples assumed they were speaking with a human, ought Google - and other, future companies - disclose that users are speaking with a bot? What are the consequences of disclosure? Is Google being deceptive or unethical? Why is the reaction to this announcement so visceral?

This is an innovative company that uses machine learning to improve the quality and taste of food, primarily in the beer, tea, and coffee spaces. Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have had a bit of a back and forth this past week regarding artificial intelligence. It all at a US National Governors Association meeting earlier this month, he called for regulation of AI to prevent the existential threat that AI poses to mankind. Zuckerberg responded to this latest doomsday prediction with bewilderment and dismissing Musk's comments were "pretty irresponsible." Of course, Musk shot back at Zuckerberg and the internet has been all abuzz about it since.

Many commentators in the tech world are championing a Universal Basic Income (UBI) due to growing concerns about employment and automation. Mark Zuckerberg recently made it a focus of his Harvard University commencement speech, calling for a new focus in society and economics.
