We do this through a weekly radio show, a monthly podcast, as well as through local events. You can listen live every Thursday from 6 to 8 pm on 88.7FM WLUW. For the rest of the week, we fill this site with a steady stream of Chicago music news, tunes, and interviews!

heykiller sits down with Toaster to discuss all the different programing that Young Chicago Authors has to offer the City of Chicago. Presented by Young Chicago Authors (YCA), Founded in 2001 by Kevin Coval, Anna West and a group of educators, Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) celebrates its 20th year with a festival that honors the vibrancy, diversity and energy of Chicago’s young writers while showcasing local talents and engaging very necessary intergenerational cross city dialogue.
What started with a handful of teams in the basement Chopin Theater has grown into over 5 weeks of over 100 competitive bouts and special events with hundreds of participants. Now, more than 13 cities across the country and Canada use the LTAB Chicago model to educate and organize.
This year for our theme we are channeling the spirit of the late great Muhammad Ali who in 1975 was invited to give the commencement ceremony speech at Harvard University. Ali, known for his outspoken and humorous rhetoric, spoke candidly about community. At the end of this speech, an audience member asked for a poem to which Ali responded, “Me. We.”
LTAB and YCA is cited by well-known Chicago artists, including, Jamila Woods, Jose Olivarez, Fatimah Asghar, Saba Pivot, and Noname as the awakening of their artistic abilities and source for their success.

The heart of YCA’s mission is the idea that everyone is an expert of their own experience. We ask the question, “Where are you from?” and the answers lead to an investigation of the worlds we inhabit, and the places and people around us that provide ingredients for our poetic inquiries. Our practice encourages a deep kind of listening that leads to radical empathy. We believe that youth voices must be at the center of civic discourse, from classrooms to city hall.
Every year, YCA serves at least 9,000 young people in the Chicago area through various workshops, residencies and projects in writing, publication, journalism and performance education.

Dr. Daniel López, Jr. was named President of Harold Washington College on December 5, 2019 by the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) Board of Trustees. Located in the heart of Chicago's Loop, Harold Washington College serves more than 12,000 students in credit and continuing education programs, more than 70 percent of which are Latino or African American students. Harold Washington College is City Colleges' Center of Excellence for business, entrepreneurship, and professional services.
Dr. López has dedicated more than 25 years to Illinois higher education in a variety of leadership and management roles. Throughout his career, Dr. López has been involved with leading academic and student affairs units at public and private higher education institutions with a laser focus on student success. He has previously held positions at Harold Washington College, Illinois State University, Lake Forest College and Northeastern University.

i am cinchel and i have been practicing drone/ambient music for about 20years. when i started i had only a delay pedal, a 4-track tape recorder and a guitar. over the years i have acquired many more guitars and pedals and expanded my recording setup to computer. All of which has allowed me to explore extreme layering and manipulation of sound. While I do have a lot solo work recorded, I also enjoy collaboration. Hailed as “pure innovators of old-school soul in a modern-day musical landscape” by These Days, Chicago-based Holly, imparts an alternative take on the city’s rich musical history by fusing elements of blues, jazz, and soul with a contemporary flair. Influenced by the stirring vocals of Sam Cooke and Leon Bridges, as well as the indie rock stylings of Wilco and Whitney, Holly, has erupted onto the scene with a sound as vibrant and welcoming as the members that comprise it.
Formed by Tanner Bednar (vocals), Brandon Couture (guitar), Peter Giere (keyboard), Rafe Soto (drums), and Dominic Zeier (bass) Holly, was born in the summer of 2018 and went on to independently release their debut EP Letters from Lawndale that September.
Since then, Holly, has opened for several nationally touring bands, garnered radio time on esteemed stations — such as 93XRT, WKQX, WGN, and WBEZ — and they’ve been televised on America’s longest-running music television program, JBTV.
In 2019 Holly, has continued to define and hone their unique sound through constant live performances and the recording of their next album, done in conjunction with award-winning producers Nick Boyd, of Royal Mountain Records, and Mark Needham, whose highlighted work includes The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, and The 1975, among others.

STRING OF ECHOES is a music-puppetry performance collaboration between Tatsu Aoki and Myra Su that explores notions of truth and loss via a young boy's journey on the high seas. Utilizing 2D and 3D puppetry styles and a unique diasporic soundscape, the piece presents an auditory and visual conversation in thinking about what place "authenticity" has in our world today.
Myra Su is a storyteller, puppeteer, and puppet maker. Based in Chicago, Myra has been an active member in the puppetry community since 2013. Her primary medium is shadow puppetry, but her work also includes experimentations with bunraku, crankies, video, and taxidermy. Her work has also expanded to collaborations outside of theater, with indie bands and musicians. In addition to her independent work, she is currently an international touring performer with Manual Cinema. She is a co-curator for the quarterly puppet slam in Chicago; Nasty, Brutish & Short. In the past, she has done work for other puppetry/spectacle companies such as Redmoon and Blair Thomas & Co. Growing up in-between the United States, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, she is interested in using puppetry to convey stories that are culturally mobile and emotionally universal. Her work is usually driven by a simple concept or motif, which is then explored through a self-reflexive application of puppetry. Myra holds a BA with honors in Theater and Anthropology from the University of Chicago.

Cloudtone endeavor to craft boundary-pushing but accessible art rock with a polyrhythmic spin. Veronica, Sam, Jordan, and Hank met as students at the University of Chicago, and each brings a unique repertoire of musical skills and influences ranging from country and bluegrass to math rock. Together, they craft danceable songs driven by complex percussive composition, groovy baselines, and jazzy guitar awash with synthesized harmonies. The band roots their compositional ideology in a post-climate crisis perspective and challenges themselves and their listeners to reorient their perspectives through genre mixing and a dash of nonsense.
Mental Health Meets Hip-Hop™ is a program that invites Mental Health Professionals into THE CULTURE. We provide platforms that integrate clinical awareness, advocacy, education and support. We implement the knowledge of mental illness while simultaneously promoting mental wellness via hip-hip and the arts. We provide resources to the community and showcase talented local artist to denounce the plight of mental illness and deconstruct the stigma behind it.
Chicago’s Sunshine Boys (featuring Freda Love Smith of Blake Babies, Dag Juhlin of Poi Dog Pondering and Jacqueline Schimmel of Big Hello) will be releasing the politically-charged single “Infinity Girl” on Friday, Jan 10 and Jennifer Reeder (whose new film Knives and Skin opened at the Music Box Theatre Dec. 13) has directed a spectacular video for the track which will be released on Friday, January 17. The band will then embark on a short tour with Freda’s former Blake Babies band mate Juliana Hatfield and there is a show confirmed for Space in Evanston on Thursday, Jan 16.
“Infinity Girl” will appear on the band’s sophomore album, Work and Love, which follows the critically-acclaimed debut Blue Music. Work and Love will be released on Friday, May 1 via Pravda Records.
Developing musical roots from Chicago IL, Jennifer Hall has created a gripping performance with an unmatched passion and vulnerability in her music. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Sia, Florence + The Machine, and Alice Merton, Jennifer identifies as a vocal powerhouse, while integrating her soulful stylings into a mix of experimental production.
Since the release of Jennifer’s self titled EP and the completion of several US tours, Jennifer leaned into a quiet period, a creative hibernation, to rebalance and reflect. Whitney Wasson (she/they) is a standup comedian and artist based in Chicago. She began standup in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and has since performed all over the country. She's been a featured performer at over a dozen comedy festivals, and was chosen as a headliner for the Chicago Women's Funny Festival in 2017. Local credits include Laugh Factory, Zanies, Second City, iO, The Annoyance, Steppenwolf, and the Cards Against Humanity Theater. Her monthly showcase, Serenity Now, has been profiled in the Chicago Reader and features a cast of all sober performers at The Crowd Theater.

Doc Rhombus : I consider myself to be a multi-instrumentalist (primarily guitar and keys) with a good ear and an ability to play with virtually all kinds of artists across different styles. I have played guitar and piano since I was a kid, and I'm more or less self-taught. My sister (who is now a drummer for Harry and the Potters and a few other bands) and I used to put on shows for family and friends at parties when we were young. I didn't study music at Loyola, but I used to sneak into one of the practice rooms at the top of the Mundelein building to sharpen my keyboard skills. I have played a few small gigs in Chicago over the years with some local artists, but not for several years.
This year, I wanted to create something personal and meaningful that stands on its own, and reflects my musical influences and "my take" on the world. I always wanted to write and arrange an album and dive heavily into songwriting and producing. The Condition is my product. Musically, it draws on alternative rock and indie rock/pop genres -- probably the genres I'm most familiar with and listen to the most (see Beck, Radiohead, Ariel Pink). But it also incorporates blues, funk, electronic, and hip-hop elements. Lyrically, the album looks outward and inward. There's plenty of commentary about privilege, status, truth (or the startling lack thereof today), and reality; there's also a good amount of introspection and discussion of depression, hopelessness, and fear.

Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, Lee Jacobson has been a dedicated member of the City his whole life. Lee spent his early adult life playing professional hockey, where he built an impressive reputation for himself at the highest levels of the sport by fighting for his teammates and physically intimidating his opponents. As a second generation lawyer, Lee has always been fascinated by the similarities between sports and the practice of law: a defined arena, rules, official, opponent, and success is ultimately defined by wins and losses. At the age of twenty-five, Lee left his Professional Hockey career to begin his path toward becoming a lawyer. An active alumnus of The John Marshall Law School, Lee has continuously strived to make and maintain contacts, and ultimately become an integral member of the Chicago legal community. On a daily basis, Lee now vigorously fights to defend his clients.

Musical Feature: Super Sonic Space Rebels
For as long as he can remember, Matt LeGrand has been in love with music. Matt spent his infant years in France and at the age of seven years old, his family relocated to Chicago. The vibrant city and its influential musicians made an immediate impression on the youngster, who found himself exploring a different genre every night, and diving headfirst into the creation of his own sound. Immersing himself in the music scene, he picked up every instrument he could from the guitar to the drums, before finally falling effortlessly into the world of songwriting.
In college he took things to the next level, performing in bands and duos around campus, and exploring sounds that eventually brought him to the deeply melodic, urban pop style that has become his staple, solidifying him as a must-watch talent on the Chicago scene. His powerfully energetic mix of soulful grooves and hard hitting pop hooks caught the attention of the music industry and brought Matt LeGrandʼs high energy, dance focused performances to nightclubs and events across The Windy City, launching his burgeoning career to new heights, and later landed him a nomination for MTVU’s The Freshman video contest.
In 2017, Matt released his summer hit single “All Good” which debuted with highly-acclaimed reviews from the Huffington Post saying “Matt LeGrand demonstrates he has the vocal chops, personal charisma and musical awareness to produce a superb pop song.” “All Good” received a smattering of national attention from major music and entertainment blogs such as Celeb Mix, The New Nine, Kings of A&R, Young Entertainment Blog, AusPop, Poparazzi, among others. Through friendship and love of comicbooks, two Latinos from Burbank and Blue Island Illinois came together to start up their own independent comicbook label, Sketch House Press. Ricardo Gonzalez and Enrique Reyes are the publishing and creative minds behind SHP. Since starting in April 2018, SHP has released its first book to great and fortunate success, La Chamba: Street Vendors Comicbook drawn and written by Ricardo. With SHP, these two friends have the chance to create characters and stories in an art form they love so much and spread the joy of comicbooks. Their second book, FREESTYLE: Comicbook Anthology Vol. 1, will be released in late July 2018 with both Ricardo and Enrique as artists on it and joined by eight other very talented artists.

Screamin’ Rachael has been named the “Queen of House Music” by Billboard Magazine. She was the first house artist to sign a major label deal and also launched the Hip House sound when she recorded Fun with Bad Boys with her mentor and friend, Afrika Bambaataa.
Born Rachael Cain – Rachael’s collaborations with notable artists including Bambaataa, Marshall Jefferson, Colonel Abrams, Grandmaster Melle Mel and others has resulted in a string of hits such as Real Thing and Rock Me which have made her club royalty. She has been the subject in a number of books, documentaries, and films including The History of House Music, Nightclubbing, The Last Party, Techno Style and the recent Hollywood release Party Monster.
On Don’t Make Me Lonely, Rachael returns to her strong Chicago alternative roots by working on the production with Van Christie of Die Warzau, who’s sound stretches the limits of house with its electronic textures and homage to acid. Javier Orman is a violinist, composer, producer and teacher originally from Uruguay and based in Chicago. He received his Master’s degree in Music from the University of Michigan and Bachelor’s in Music and Mathematics from the College of Charleston with full academic scholarships. Over the last 6 years, he has been writing, recording and performing with his violin-and-guitar duo KOZM, described as “the most rock ’n’ roll pair of classically trained musicians working today” by 21st Century Musician. He enjoys collaborating with great artists from all genres, including hip-hop singer/producer Skylar Grey, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik and Classical crossover pianist Christopher O’Riley (NPR’s From the Top). Javier also produces electronic music as solo artist MLTFTR, inspired by literary and visual aesthetics of urban dystopias and retrowave musicians such as Com Truise, Tokimonsta and Home.
Javier has been teaching violin for 12 years in a variety of traditions including Classical, Rock and American Fiddle. He has guest-lectured and offered master-classes at the University of Wisconsin, College of William & Mary, Sphinx Performance Academy, Montecito Music Festival and others. In 2009, he founded Kidzymphony, a children’s orchestra program in Charleston, South Carolina, modeled after Venezuela’s El Sistema. When Javier’s not performing or teaching, he enjoys arranging and recording strings for artists and producers such as Blänk, Essen Hiort and Cubeatz, as well as composing for video-games.
A former winner in 2012 of Placido Domingo’s prestigious Operalia competition and of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, American soprano, Janai Brugger, begins the 2015-16 season as Michaela Carmen at Washington National Opera, and sings the role again later in the season at Lyric Opera of Kansas. Identified by Opera News as one of their top 25 “brilliant young artists” (October 2015 issue), Janai joins the Metropolitan Opera for their Rising Stars concert series and makes several US concert appearances during the season, along with various recital performances. She makes her debut as Norina Don Pasquale at Palm Beach Opera, and returns to Los Angeles Opera to revive the role of Musetta La Boheme which she sings under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel.

Magix King, born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, has been practicing the art of hip-hop since first hearing a cipher in the park. Growing up he was surrounded by distractions but the love for music always kept his mind focused. “It started as just a way to get things off my mind, then I learned about the power of communication. I love the way it feels to hear a song and find comfort, feeling like somebody knows whats up”. Being family oriented connecting with someone, having the desire to comfort and entertain came naturally. “I remember how he was all about the people even since the beginning, open mics, shows or whatever it was he wouldn’t put the set together until we got there because he had to feel what the crowd needed to hear-nomme”.
While growing, practicing and perfecting his art Magix understood that along with having a great music library, timing is everything. “My uncle used to tell me your music has to be able to stand for itself. Right now I have a strong movement behind me, Royal Lifestyle, and I am beginning to execute the plan, I feel like I am right on time”. March 9, 2012 Magix released his first solo mixtape entitled “Dream Catcher”. Throughout this collection of music he touches on many emotions from mirror conversations, love, pain etc. It takes you on a understand travel, understanding that this artist has talent and the means to make a difference in the industry if not the world. He is currently working on “the Workout Session” a mixtape that shows Magix’s growth. The desire to grow does not seem to be stopping anytime soon. Lyrically, production wise and even his mentality seems to be on a higher scale. “We came to take over like it or not/ the grinding don’t stop/ until I’m retiring my pops/ and my moms on a yacht/ and then I’m working on the city that I’m from/ where us kings hung/ spitting ill verses since we was young-Magix King”.
Magix has performed overseas in Luxembourg, Europe as a result from “Dream Catcher”. He has performed numerous times making sure to leave a memorable impact on the crowd. Trace the Shadow is a 4 piece English/Spanish rock group hailing from the South side of Chicago. Originally started in 2009 by Jesse (Guitarist) and Rafael (Drummer), the band began as a group of high school kids playing at the local talent show with fellow classmate Anthony, who would later become the band’s singer and rhythm guitarist. Although the group’s first time playing together was done on short notice, we continued to play and develop as a band by playing outside of school. Following a series of talent shows over a span of 3 years, Arnold, former bassist of “The Minorities” was invited to join us in 2012. What was once an excuse to pick up instruments soon became a hobby for us. We enjoy playing live music whenever the opportunity arises.

Demo is a Hip-Hop artist from the SouthSide Chicago. Born Alexis Ramirez, he was exposed to Hip-Hop at a young age. The environment he lived in was riddled with gangs and drugs, sadly he was easily drawn by the street way of life. His early years were spent gang-banging in the streets of Little Village (a neighbourhood in the SouthSide of Chicago). Music became an influence and soon he began writing his own lyrics. He was known to freestyle raps on corners for his friends. At age 13 he was taken to Radioarte (a local radio station) and freestyled on live air and received great feedback. As a freshman he freestyle for No I.D. (president of Def Jam) when he visited his high school as a guest speaker and received a standing ovation. Demo would then focus on music and leave his life of crime. He toured Mexico and performed in cities such as Puebla, Valle de Chalco, Ciudad Neza and Mexico City including others. He is an established artist in Chicago, known as one of the most refreshing talents to rise up in the Latino scene.

Ja’Mal Green grew up on the Southside of Chicago and has experienced the effects of poverty and gun violence firsthand. Green is an activist and entrepreneur whose activism and efforts have reached national and international audiences. Ja’Mal brings a marginalized perspective to issues such as race relations, economics and the current state of political justice in America. Since starting his first youth organization at age 15, Ja’Mal has worked tirelessly as a community organizer and motivational speaker, mentoring youth and implementing programs and policies to help reduce gun violence, while also serving as a conduit between law enforcement, politicians and the community at large.

In Her Shoes Foundation (IHSF) began as the Positive Girls Club in 2008 as a forum for women of all ages to build strong individual and community relationships in the Chicagoland area.
In 2011 the Club was formalized and it became In Her Shoes Foundation (IHSF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Today, through our Professional Development Program, Giving Back initiative and our flagship program, Ready Set Girls Academy, we strive to create a nurturing and positive environment for women and girls of all backgrounds to empower and inspire them to be their personal best.

Calid B is an emcee/producer/songwriter/DJ who ushered in a new sound called AfroBang. Calid entered the music scene as manager and producer. But in 2016, Calid was eager to give the world a unique sound inspired by his African lineage and his experiences as a black man in the United States. He released “AfroBang” in July 2016, that hit such as “Gold” and “Parasites.” On August 2, 2018, he followed up with his second album, “Son of Sologon” that expands the AfroBang sound with songs like “Free the Watoto” and “Mansa Musa.”

Carlo has produced many “Global music” projects with artists from around world over the past 15 years. Carlo has visited over 30 countries to collect materials for his musical collaborations. So naturally she made a pair. Her mother took her to the fabric store, showed her how to set up the sewing machines, and she was on her way to discovering the art of fashion.
Anastasia loves music! If she was not going to be a designer she wanted to be a leading women in the rock n roll music industry. A few of her muses are Kim Gordon, Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love. The support of local Detroit music venues actually helped give Anastasia her fashion retail experience. Creating garments all week, then setting up racks of clothes at punk rock shows in Detroit and selling to the concertgoers.

Hobbyist is Holly Prindle who sings and Marc Mozga who plays guitar, drum machines, drone machines, bass and melodica. Hobbyist was formed in 2013 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The release of their self- titled debut album came that same year, along with the EP “Hobbyist in Dub”- featuring reggae bass master Dennis Bovell.
After playing numerous rock shows in their hometown of Chicago Holly went to live and sing in Goleniow, Poland with the experimental theatre group Teatr Brama, who specialize in community art and ancient pagan folk singing. Concurrently, Marc embedded himself for 3 years with a suburban Chicago family to film them raise their autistic son. The result was “Getting To First Grade”- an observational documentary produced, shot and edited by Marc which was completed in 2015.
The duo went on a short tour of the Northwest USA and Vancouver in late 2015. On a rainy night in Vancouver Marc proposed marriage to Holly and she accepted. The trip also led to a fruitful live to tape recording of the song “2244” at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Washington by Paul Krogh. In 2016 the song was released as a lathe cut 7” picture disc with all proceeds benefiting the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network. Early that same year Holly and Marc were wed in the lookout tower of a bridge house along the Chicago River.
In the month of January 2017 Hobbyist took up residence in Barcelona, Spain to work on material for a new album. Barcelona in the off season proved a surreal vantage point for Hobbyist to take in news from back home: A germaphobe ex- reality TV star was now president! These experiences inform their new album “Sonic Cramps” recorded at Pallet Sound, Chicago.

Through friendship and love of comicbooks, two Latinos from Burbank and Blue Island Illinois came together to start up their own independent comicbook label, Sketch House Press. Ricardo Gonzalez and Enrique Reyes are the publishing and creative minds behind SHP. Since starting in April 2018, SHP has released its first book to great and fortunate success, La Chamba: Street Vendors Comicbook drawn and written by Ricardo. With SHP, these two friends have the chance to create characters and stories in an art form they love so much and spread the joy of comicbooks. Their second book, FREESTYLE: Comicbook Anthology Vol. 1, will be released in late July 2018 with both Ricardo and Enrique as artists on it and joined by eight other very talented artists.

Santiago currently resides in the city of Pilsen Chicago. Having been raised as a first generation Latino, Santiago was exposed to both Spanish and English music. His influences range from Jose Jose, Selena, and Wisin y Yandel to Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and Jay Z. Santiago’s music draws inspiration from various artists and can be mostly described as melodic and soothing. His latest EP “Thanks To You” provides a mixture of both Reggaeton and Hip Hop music, with hit singles such as “Tattoos” and “Cai Otra Vez”. Santiago is currently in the process of releasing his music video for the single “Tattoos” which is expected to drop before the summer is over. From an early age, Roy has had an interest in music. He began playing guitar when he was eight years old. In high school, he took a break from guitar to spend time in photography and hockey, but then got back into music when he began playing drums while he was in college. His interest in drums led to an interest in hip-hop. As he started heavily listening to the beats, lyrics, and production of his favorite artists, he began writing his own songs.
Influenced by artists such as G-Eazy, Logic, Cal Scruby, and Post Malone, Roy has been able to develop a writing and music style that he is proud to call his own, and believes it will help set him apart from other artists. The latest Bloodhype album, High From Las Vegas, is a collaboration between Maureen Neer, Chris Lee, and Colin Mulhern. High From Las Vegas was recorded both as live, improvised sessions and and as separate tracks, which the trio sent back and forth to each other until deemed complete; like musical pen pals. All three wrote, produced, and mixed tracks in their respective studios, with Neer primarily on vocals, Lee on drum machine, and Mulhern on bass.

Stephen Bekoe was born on the westside of Chicago. As a child, Bekoe grew up on Kostner & Kenneth also known as the Ktown area. This area was high in crime, drug operations, and prostitution. As Bekoe started elementary school. He started out an honor roll student. He was known for having an aggressive attitude which led him to getting kicked out of Sumner Academy elementary, and moving with his father to Bolingbrook, Illinois. Even with all the negative things going on. Bekoe’s father kept music a tool for success. His father traveled from Ghana to America to pursue his dream of music with his band. While Bekoe was growing up, he sat in studio sessions, attended concerts, and watched his father in rehearsals with his band. He quickly became familiar with the music industry and the sacrifice it took to be a successful musician. “What influenced me is how much work I saw being put into just one song or an entire album. I knew then that I wanted to carry the torch and build my empire in music in America.” While growing up, Bekoe was introduced to various different kinds of music. Listening to R&B, soul, jazz, “good feeling music”, put something inside of Bekoe that he can’t describe. It brought him a clear vision of what he wanted to create through music. He was already exposed to living a musician lifestyle and he always knew that he had to work hard to get where he wanted to go. In his teenage years, Bekoe began to write poetry more and more. He would sit in class while consistently thinking of words that rhyme. In high school during lunch, he and his friends would bang on lunch tables to make different beats. Bekoe started to create instrumentals and felt an urge to begin writing and recording his own songs. In 2008 Bekoe graduate Bolingbrook High school and attended College of Dupage where he started recording freestyles, and writing songs in between classes. It wasn’t until 2009 when Bekoe met Tracy gardener and recorded his first song titled Goof Ball. He let a lot of people listen to it and got feedback that he wasn’t expecting. His listeners absolutely loved the song, while Bekoe didn’t think it was his best work. They kept asking him why his song wasn’t on the radio yet. This however, showed him that he was onto something and it koe continued to work on his music and wrote Bounce. This song had more of upbeat tempo, his listeners wanted to hear more, and that pushed Bekoe to continue growing. Not too long of time after, Bekoe stepped outside of himself and told a story about who he is and where he is from. This is when Bekoe started his own movement. His newest single iLLANOiZE is his anthem. Bekoe wrote the song in 2012 but he didn’t take things serious with it until 2013 when he recorded a video for it. Before going to perform at a show, Bekoe went to a custom t-shirt shop to get a shirt made. The shirt read “ILLANOIZE” and when he got to the show, everyone was asking him about it. This is where the demand for “iLLANOiZE” became extreme. This led to his clothing line called “iLLANOiZE” that sells different types of clothing ranging from hooded sweatshirts for adults to t-shirts for children. “Some people don’t even know that I am the creator. They think I work for the company when they see me wearing the clothes. That’s how great the marketing is.” Currently, Bekoe is working on iLLANOiZE mixtape which will have an album feel to it. The songs will be based on his everyday life issues of living in Chicago. He also will have visuals of artists as well as the city of Chicago. In the past he has worked with artists such as L Streets, Dreezy (Chicago), AzaeProduction (Videographer of Chicago), Sinna Video Vixen (Chicago) and Dj Freddy B (Chicago Heavy Hittas). Bekoe plans to work with many more artists and continue to strengthen his craft.

Bardo Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, Bardo spent much of his childhood living abroad in Italy, Spain and Japan listening to his parents’ favorite music like A Tribe Called Quest, Omar Lye Fook and The Roots. His global lens allows him to not only rap and sing in multiple languages, but also draw inspiration from places outside the US.
Bardo hopes that his Chicago bred, groovy sound, (provided by his 4 piece band Allied Forces) which has been compared to Outkast and N.E.R.D, can help knock down the barriers and ignorance that exists between different people and places simply by providing contact and a common groove.

Simon Mustafa is a Milwaukee native emcee & entrepreneur. Simon was raised on Milwaukee’s north side, an area of the city that is often prone to violence, but also home to many of the city’s Hip Hop talent. Simon’s preparation for his journey into the world of Hip Hop began at a young age, when he found an interest in Hip Hop music, and later developed an interest in the written word and began writing his own thoughts and feelings. His main motivation for immersing himself in Hip Hop and writing was a need for his voice to be heard. Being the youngest of three children, he often felt he wasn’t being listened to, and Hip Hop gave him an opportunity to share his thoughts, feelings and opinions in a different way that allowed him more freedom than he felt he had previously.
Simon Mustafa has been greatly influenced by other Midwest artist including Kanye West, Saba, IshDarr & WebsterX. He is part of a young, talented group of emcees that has made Milwaukee a hotbed for Hip Hop talent in recent years.

Pennjamin Bannekar was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan but raised in Chicago, Penn as he is often called, discovered his love for music at an early age. Falling in love with the creative process and writing Penn decided to major in Communications and graduated from University of Illinois Champagne Urbana. College was where Penn began to grow as an artist and started to receive acclaim. Penn came back to Chicago and joined the group Project: Fr3sh. While in Project: Fr3sh Penn changed his name from Penn the God to Pennjamin Bannekar. Given the name by his friends as a joke, he began to love the meaning behind it and chose to use it as his stage name. After a 2-year run with the group Penn went solo and began to become the unsung hype of Chicago’s hip hop scene. His first solo project was his mixtape Hello World. The release of Hello World had many people clamoring for more. The success of Hello World set up the release of his first album HeartBeat. HeartBeat was released May 3, 2011. The first single from HeartBeat was ILLwrite. The single was a great introduction of who he was and was picked up by MTV. HeartBeat went on to be named Album Of The Month by some critics after landing write ups in the Chicago Tribune and touring with Dwele, Elzhi, Bilal Oliver, and KRS-One Penn’s success started to materialize.

Alined, the feisty miracle, began her music movement in 2015. Coming out as a local lyricist Alined began to make noise quickly. Opening up for artist such as Drezzy and Montana 300 she’s on her way to the top. Just 5 months after she recorded her first track, “Swagger Jackas” (SoundCloud)Alined moved to Atlanta Georgia to further her music career. Performing at over 18 shows, and on stage with Dj Drama, furthering she was. Just four months after the move Alined was shot in the back of the head while out at a club. An innocent victim of gang violence Alined woke up in the hospital two days later angry and confused. But she wasn’t going to let that stop her. Alined checked herself out of the hospital five days later , and flew back to Chicago just to drop her first video that month on YouTube called Continue To Live . Since then Alined has done shows in Colorado, Texas, and Minnesota. With hits like Inbox, Power, and Games Alined has already been solicited by Universal Records and plans on making the biggest splash into the music industry!!!

GIRL K is an indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Front-woman, Kathy Patino, began playing under the name GIRL K at local events and open mics near her hometown of Minooka in March of 2017. It was not until she performed at a local hotspot nicknamed “The Drunken Donut”, that she decided to record. A few weeks before the release of what would be her debut album, “Sunflower Court”, she began playing with a band. Since the initial release on Oct.6th, this charming group has played out their fun and heart-aching tunes in hopes of spreading a message of positivity and passion.

Intentional yet idiosyncratic the band has been praised for its eclecticism and originality on tape and on stage. The group was founded by Fyodor Sakhnovski and Mojdeh. Fyodor is a guitarist, percussionist, and audio producer. Mojdeh is an inter-disciplinary artist, musician, 5x award winning and touring poet, educator and advocate for survivors of trauma. Her writing focuses on topics related to trauma, race, family and religion. The band has performed with notable acts like Psychic TV, Saul Williams, Pere Ubu, Man or Astro-Man?, Mr. Gnome, and Sorne.
Their second official release “unheeded” (out now: http://smarturl.it/unheeded) is a poetic examination of the experience and effects of racism, trauma, silence, fear and grief. Haunting female vocals scale over angular, post-punk guitar riffing, the pounding of metal percussion and the melancholy drone of downtempo synths.

Tautologic began in 1997 when Ethan Sellers and Pat Buzby had finished college. Sellers, a vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist, was assembling a new band with friends from his years at the University of Chicago. Buzby, a drummer, had studied at Oberlin and was planning his next move when he read an ad Sellers placed on a progressive rock discussion group. The band took shape and was gigging and recording by the winter of 1998.
Sellers and Buzby shared a love of 70’s progressive rock, but also wanted to bring contemporary and eclectic influences into the music rather than reproducing old sounds. The early lineups of the band lacked lead guitar, leading them to use their string arrangement skills to give the songs much of their character. Pointed, humorous lyrics and stories of the strange characters in abundance around the South Side of Chicago also linked many of Tautologic’s songs.
West Is North, East Is South, the band’s debut CD, captured this era. It received critical acclaim in the U.S. and Europe upon its release in 2000. The band’s next recording, The Basement Sessions, arrived in 2002 and showed the band experimenting with funk influences, and introducing lead guitar into the mix.
Also in 2002, Sellers staged a multimedia piece, At the Apartment, featuring songs from the Basement Sessions and other Tautologic material. In 2005, the band put on a second theatrical piece, Psychle. Sellers finished producing a recording of these newer songs in 2007, but financial setbacks forced him to archive the CD, Re:Psychle, for a decade.
With many of the early members of the group finishing their studies in Chicago and moving on to other states, Sellers and Buzby needed to build new band lineups in the 2000’s. Bassist Nathan Britsch began working with them in the early part of that decade, saxophonist Chris Greene and violinist/vocalist Emily Albright joined in the mid-00’s, and newest member guitarist Jay Montana arrived in 2010. Re:Psychle also includes prominent contributions from former band members, including guitarist Aaron Weistrop, violinist Jeff Yang and vocalist Jennifer Justice.
In the late 2000’s, Sellers began a new career as a leader of bands in various styles, including Irish music, Cajun and bluegrass, which is still ongoing. Buzby and other members of Tautologic participate in these groups whenever possible. Finally, at the end of 2017, the time is right for a release of Re:Psychle, and Tautologic’s return to a more active schedule.

Calling Todd Kessler a singer/songwriter simply wouldn’t do him justice. The rising folk-rock star is the consummate storyteller, with a remarkable ability to take listeners on a winding, wonderful, and introspective journey through the depths of the human experience.
Kessler’s highly anticipated new album, About Memory, was released on November 3, 2017. The album finds Kessler going back to his roots, producing a timeless folk sound with hints of alt-rock and classic Americana.Recorded in Los Angeles at New Monkey Studio (made famous by Elliot Smith), About Memory was produced by Marc Daniel Nelson (Fleetwood Mac, Colbie Caillat) and Ran Jackson (Katy Perry, Goo Goo Dolls) and mastered by Eric Boulanger, who has worked with industry titans like Adele, Green Day, and Neil Young.
“When a songwriter can tell a story that is specific to them, yet allows the listener to hear him or herself in it, that’s the pinnacle for me,” shares Kessler.
To date, Kessler has released two singles from About Memory: “Old Fashioned Way” and “The Letter.” Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, Kessler graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Music Theory and Composition. Shortly after graduating, he released his first LP, We Are the Musicmakers. In 2012, Kessler formed Todd Kessler and The New Folk, and they released their first album, Sea Fever, which was produced by Manny Sanchez (Patrick Stump, Umphrees McGee). The album’s release was supported with a lengthy residency at Schubas Tavern, but as it happened, Kessler missed part of the residency when he was chosen as part of Team Ceelo on NBC’s The Voice.
Gaining exposure from The Voice, Todd Kessler and the New Folk began touring more, playing festivals like Summerfest, Taste of Chicago and Mile of Music. Between 2013 and 2015, the band worked on new material and released two singles: “Exactly Where I Should Be” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” But, as members of the New Folk began getting married and having children, life on the road became arduous. Eventually, the New Folk agreed to a break, disbanding indefinitely to spend time with their families.
Influenced by artists like Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac, Ryan Adams and David Gray, Kessler continues to evolve into the bold storyteller he’s always wanted to be.“I like to call myself a realistic optimist,” says Kessler. “I will always tend to see the bright side of things but don’t shy away when things get real.”

From within the streets of Chicago, beyond the daily commute of the 9 to 5ers and among the music blaring in the streets, Navarro (formerly known as Scheme) makes his presence known and begins to make his mark taking his outlook on Hip Hop to a new level. Influence from artists like Nas, 2Pac, Jay-Z, Pharoahe Monch, Carlos Santana and many more helped create a vivid writer with a story to tell, and an uncanny talent to point out with precision the realities of life. A first generation Mexican-American, his exposure to different cultures, languages and walks of life have helped create a voice for the generation of kids who were the first to grow up in the U.S., all the while unsure of where they really belonged.
At the age of 12 Navarro started rewriting lyrics from some of his favorite records, studying the rhyme’s structure and flow. Learning the ins and outs of the genre, he discovered a balance between his foundation as a lyricist and the concepts and melodies used to deliver his message. Through his music, he tells the story of how Hip Hop changed his feeling of not belonging and the way music accepts every race, every color and every class. Using his words as a weapon for good he captures moments in life that can change moods, create ideas and generate emotion.

Alouette is a noisy duo drawing from Iggy-swagger, Patti Smith spoken-word-punk and The Fall minimalism/sneer while toeing the line between lo-fi garage and post-punk. Only two people, Alouette fills up an entire room with raspy vox & guitar of Jenn Sencha, who plays without a pick, and James dB, who’s only been drumming since Alouette began playing together in 2016.
The band spent 2017 honing their sound, playing shows in Chicago and touring the Midwest in support of the début “Psychomotor EP.” They began 2018 in the studio recording a second EP to be released in April 2018 with tours down south and to the East Coast USA to follow.

Jay Lyn Gatz is an independent hip-hop artist born on the south side of Chicago. He began rapping in 2001. Gatz’ music serves as an outlet to polish his craft and individuality. Evan Nash is a 22-year-old hip-hop artist based out of Chicago. He has been in the industry over 6 years and has garnered over a quarter million streams. Mumbled, spit out, Ganser explores communication breakdown on their debut LP, Odd Talk. Seeking meaning in mess, they sort through syllables and signals to find the right words. When’s the last time you called your mother?
“Sometimes there isn’t the right thing to say, throwing language in a blender is the only option,” says bassist and vocalist Alicia Gaines. “Looking through randomness like tea leaves, you find meaning in it eventually and work with that.”
Having approached sadness’ absurd edges with their last EP, 2016’s This Feels Like Living, the Chicago foursome dive into where words fail. Ganser wraps themselves around the album, from artwork to music video conception and direction, sprinkling subtle nods to Oxford into their sound with dashes of Radiohead and Ride.
“There’s this point where the feelings you’ve let fester below the surface start to grow legs and gain autonomy,” says keyboardist and vocalist Nadia Garofalo. Throughout Odd Talk, Ganser’s amorphous sound takes on the form of their comedically grim, absurdist subject matter. On “PSY OPS,” Charlie Landsman’s chaotic, crunchy guitar matches the frenetic nature of the words (“Play like you’re in a cinematic jungle knife fight”). However, on “Aubergine,” the guitar leaves room for Gaines’ slinking, fretless bass. Coupled with Brian Cundiff’s sinewy, propulsive drumming, the rhythm section plays off the tension between danceable no wave and post-punk’s determined focus.
Exercising both introverted melody and extroverted noise, the band finds meaning through echolalic shouts and murmurs. Garofalo shouts and barks with an acerbic edge, Gaines soothes and swells. Ganser is very uncertain and scared. Sometimes, words fail.

Meet our Host! Born and raised in Chicago – as a teenager, Selene developed a love for Hip-Hop, the arts, music and entertainment. After dabbing into some acting and media work, Selene now produces an up and coming talk show that currently airs in 24 towns in the northwest suburbs on Public Access TV; The Ladies View. Most recently, The Ladies View has launched a podcast on Anchor. The hope is to cast a wider net of viewers/listeners for the show, as well as serve as media coverage for local events.
Jillian
Born and raised in Chicago, Puerto Rican decent. Growing up on the northwest side of Chicago, Jillian and Selene met about 23 years ago and their friendship flourished. As a young girl she loved modeling and fashion. She attended The Illinois Institute of Art – Fashion/Merchandising and now she’s currently working in Corporate Retail. The opportunity of becoming Selene’s co-host at The Ladies View was exciting because Jillian always had a love/passion for the industry.
Heather
From a young age, Heather has had an interest in media and entertainment. Growing up in the Beverly neighborhood in Chicago, she dabbled in acting, dancing and singing. While attending DePaul University, she started a career in Recruiting but her passion for news and public speaking remained alive. Heather’s friendship with Selene is what created this opportunity for her to co-host and be one of the driving forces behind this avant-garde talk show and podcast.
Joanna
Born and raised in Southern Illinois, Joanna graduated from Indiana State University with a BS in Merchandising. She currently works in Corporate America as a Contracts Supervisor. She has a love for fashion, a passion for Social Issues and loves debating with Selene on dissenting opinions in politics. She joined The Ladies View 3 years ago as a co-host and has enjoyed every bit of it – the good, the bad and the ugly!

Kali Paylinn is an energetic artist from the South Suburban area who produces, writes and performs his own genre blending music. Growing up he’s always took different interests than a lot of his peers, skateboarding and fashion became major focuses early in life as they became great outlets for a creativity and self-expression that wasn’t uplifted much at home. Musically, he finds inspiration from legends such as Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne and various classic rock bands who although have great musical talent, also mastered moving people through their larger than life and unique image. Growing as an artist over the years he has quickly become known for having quite a unique and exciting image for himself. Trademark light-hearted mentions of occult and spiritual experiences can be found in his discography consisting of “Ouija’s Movie” his first EP project (soundcloud/bandcamp), “Thrasher” his 2nd EP project (soundcloud) and his newest “Tha Kill Tape” (2017) a mixtape project giving his own unique spin on the industry’s most popular recent songs. Dark imagery has also always been a heavy influence in the molding of his personality artistically; in fact his self-produced upcoming EP will be called “Dark Angel” for personal reasons. Known for his addictive melodies, personality, quotable lines, great flows and energetic, sometimes screaming adlibs he is sure to make Dark Angel one of the greatest stand out projects to ever propel a seemingly unknown artist’s career to the next level.

In 2013, Jay finished his 3rd project entitled Choke On That in. Choke On That is uncensored, controversial sketch comedy. Choke On That is a culmination of real life scenarios Jay Davis has experienced over the last two years. On March 21st Jay released is 4th feature projected entitled Not Another Zombie Movie at the Patio Theater to a crowd of nearly 1,000 people Not Another Zombie Movie is currently available at Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Sears, Amazon Prime, Barnes & Noble, and VUDU.
Jay finished up his 5th project Choke On that Reloaded, which is a following up to the sketch comedy series Choke On in November 2015. Jay is currently working on his 4th feature film entitled Not Another Black Movie.
Not Another Black Movie is about when a family’s matriarch, Big Mama, passes away, her dying wish is to make sure the family she raised address their personal demons. Now, her dysfunctional family must seek unconventional therapy in order to get a multi-million dollar inheritance. Chaos ensues as they are forced to deal with old rivalries, volatile marriages, and failed dreams.

It’s hard to get a hold on what Chicago’s LEVER is going to do next. The four-piece identifies as “bipolar grunge pop.” They grab influences from many different areas of music, from THE VINES to THE BEATLES, and polish it up into their own unique sound. Not too polished, though, grit and distortion still rule on the majority of their songs. These dudes are super hungry and play wherever they can – wrestling matches, flea markets, and, lucky for us, divey bars and music venues. Their debut album, Hover Bored, was released in May 2015. We Are Television said the album “can be enjoyed by the punks and pop enthusiasts alike. Nino Arobelidze aka Girl Named Nino is a Georgian born songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Chicago. Nino received her formal music education from DePaul University but maintains the core of her knowledge to be largely DIY. Dubbed “Ever-evolving”(Richard Milne, 93XRT Local Anesthetic), “Rising Star of Indie, Soul, World Music and Jazz”(Daily Herald), Nino’s become an artist to watch in her adapted city of Chicago- “Remember that name…It may be a safe bet that Nino Arobelidze is a name that you’ll hear a lot more going forward”(Robert Chiarito, The Chicago Ambassador).
Nino has released two solo albums (Nomad 2014, Girl Named Nino 2016); a collaborative release with Forbidden Knowledge (Urbanismz 2012) a self released EP (Strange Brew 2011) and most recently composed original songs for the documentary film, Our Blood is Wine (Music Box Films, Official selection at Berlinale 2018). Moonlight Daughter, a multi-lingual, genre-fluid album, co-produced with her long-time collaborator Pablo Gordy was released on Feb, 14th, 2018 on Arobelidze’s imprint, Moonlight Daughter Records.

Umbra and the Volcan Siege was founded in 2006 by JIm Licka embracing his “super hero ultra-identity” as UMBRA. Umbra is surrounded by his siege of musicians which help create a sound-scape of genre bending music.
Umbra and the Volcan Siege has released 3 albums in total. Hobbyist is Holly Prindle who sings and Marc Mozga who plays guitar, drum machines, drone machines, bass and melodica. Hobbyist was formed in 2013 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The release of their self- titled debut album came that same year, along with the EP “Hobbyist in Dub”- featuring reggae bass master Dennis Bovell.
After playing numerous rock shows in their hometown of Chicago Holly went to live and sing in Goleniow, Poland with the experimental theatre group Teatr Brama, who specialize in community art and ancient pagan folk singing. Concurrently, Marc embedded himself for 3 years with a suburban Chicago family to film them raise their autistic son. The result was “Getting To First Grade”- an observational documentary produced, shot and edited by Marc which was completed in 2015. The duo went on a short tour of the Northwest USA and Vancouver in late 2015. On a rainy night in Vancouver Marc proposed marriage to Holly and she accepted. The trip also led to a fruitful live to tape recording of the song “2244” at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Washington by Pual Krogh. In 2016 the song was released as a lathe cut 7” picture disc with all proceeds benefiting the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network. Early that same year Holly and Marc were wed in the lookout tower of a bridge house along the Chicago River.
In the month of January 2017 Hobbyist took up residence in Barcelona, Spain to work on material for a new album. The gothic Catalonian city in the off season proved a surreal vantage point for Hobbyist to take in news from back home: A germaphobe ex- reality TV star was now president! These experiences inform their new album “Sonic Cramps” recorded at Pallet Sound, Chicago and was released January 12, 2018.

Doc Da Mindbenda is a Producer/Engineer hailing from Chicago,IL. Originally from Waukegan, IL. Doc made the move to Chicago to pursue his passion in music in late 2011. The move would quickly pay off as he quickly linked with many of Chicago’s veterans and so to be stars of today. As well as linking up with Consequence in early 2011, Doc has produced for the late great Sean Price, as part of his frequent collaborations with Vic Spencer. Also producing for such acts as Boldy James, Brian Fresco, Dally Auston, Vic Mensa of SaveMoney, Mic Terrror, Sulaiman, White Gzus of Treated Crew, Chris Crack, The Winners (Hus Kingpin, Rozewood, JuneLyfe) , Dunbar (SureShotTD, Bunchy Cartier) As an engineer, almost every great rapper and singer has stepped foot in the GrindHouse, a recording studio, and home base for Doc and his fellow artists. He has engineered for the likes of Chance The Rapper, BJ The Chicago Kid, TInk, Lance Skiiiwalker to name a few. Known for his laid back, smoke filled vibes, Doc has made a lane for himself producing full length projects, EP’s and Beat Tapes. As well as being a mentor to his up n coming crop of talent.

Terrence “T” Tomlin (Founder) Born and raised in Chicago’s South Side Roseland neighborhood, Terrence is a life long Chicago Sports enthusiast who has spent the last 7 years of his career navigating his way through the journalism/media industry.
An alumni of “thee” Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, Terrence has made stops at WBAL 1090AM(Baltimore) as assistant producer for “The Bret Hollander Show”, iHeart Media(Chicago), WGN’s The Game 87.7FM(Chicago), and most recently served as Managing Editor for the illustrious Chicago Defender newspaper.
Eugene “Geno” Macintosh (Co-Founder) A product of Chicago’s “Golden Era” of Sports, “Geno” is armed with a rich sports background being a product of Beasley Academic Center and Mt. Carmel High School where he played basketball with Antoine Walker (Boston Celtics/Miami Heat) and Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles) and was an all area baseball selection. “I knew my calling would have something to do with sports even if I wasn’t playing.”
Eugene also has over 10 years experience managing/working with some of Chicago’s brightest hip hop artists through his company “Stay Humble Entertainment”.
Fiona Kimble is a 20 year old singer-songwriter, born and raised in Champaign IL. She released her debut album, No Regret in 2015 and won second place for “Best Up and Coming Artist” in Buzz Magazine. Fiona has opened for Liza Anne, and has been featured on Sofar Sounds’ Songs From a Room program. Fiona writes a lot about her personal issues with mental illness and women’s rights, and just released her second album Your Playground on December 22nd, currently available on all streaming services.

Josefina is a singer-songwriter based in Chicago, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has traveled to and lived in places all over the world, from Paris to Beijing, and plenty of these experiences have made their way into her lyrics. Born in Joliet,IL, Markee has been influenced by rap music since a young lad with Ice Cube’s ‘Today Was a Good Day’ being the first song he knew the words to at age 3. Since then he has been the most diligent student of hip-hop, memorizing an extensive catalogue from various artists such as; Lil Wayne, Cam’ron, 50 Cent, T.I., Snoop, Eminem, DMX, Jay-Z, and Kanye West are amongst artist that he credits as influences.
Markee is currently promoting his 2nd album titled “…In The Name of Gabby” The album is a dedication to his younger sister who was killed in a car crash in January 2016. He has released two singles along with videos so far.

Elizabeth Eden Harris (born May 31, 1997), known as “CupcakKe”, is a rapper and songwriter born and raised in Chicago. Elizabeth began rapping at the age of 14, starting off doing church poetry, she received the nickname “CupcakKe’‘ and she later began to rap. First song “Gold Digger’’ went viral on internet in 2012. Songs as ‘’Money’’ (2012) ,‘’Figgas Over Niggas’’ (2013) and ‘’Yo Lost’’ (2014) gained attention. In 2015 she broke the internet with her sexually charged anthems “Vagina” and “Deepthroat’’ and in February 2016 she released her first album entitled “Cum Cake”.
“People were thinking, ‘She’s so vulgar. She’s bold. We’re going to get a mixtape that’s nasty.’ And then they come to find out there are only three songs on the mixtape that are [explicit],” said CupcakKe for Columbus Alive about the album. “Cum Cake” gained attention of music publications such as Complex and Paper Magazine, which premiered the single “Pedophile”, where she details the story of being a minor who was involved in a relationship with an older man.
In June 2016, CupcakKe announced her second album entitled “S.T.D” which was considered one of the Best Rap Album of 2016 by Rolling Stone Magazine. The same month, The Fader Magazine commented about CupcakKe being one of the 21 rappers to feel excited about. Pitchfork commented CupcakKe’s career thus far may be defined by her ability to turn out great raunchy anthems, but she is capable of so much more.

It started in an airplane from Kunming, China to Hong Kong. Suri was deciding whether she wanted to take a piano teaching job away from Chicago, where she was born and raised. As , fears of failure, and worries about her insecurities rose to the surface mid-flight, she knew she couldn’t make a choice at that very moment, but she knew one thing for sure , and that was to write a song. Between the yes and No, she had to write the song.
Suri is still connected to her classical music roots, but has performed as a Jazz singer and as a folk/pop artist. She’s recently teamed up with producer, mixer Taylor K. Phipps for her latest project “As I Am”. The EP is a fusion of Suri’s sweet vocals, poetic lyrics, and piano themes with the electric, synth feel.
Suri’s first melodies emerged from uncomfortable times whether she was struggling with her indecisiveness going through a heartbreak, or when she was on a plane moving half way across the world. She may not know your story, but she hopes you will find that hers resonants with yours.

Founded by composers and Chicago natives David Paha and Edward Hamel, the concept of SCRIPTS began in 2015 while both David and Edward were living in Los Angeles. Growing nostalgic for the progressive and evolving music scene of their hometown, Edward and Dave returned to Chicago in late 2016 and released their first pressing shortly after. They continue to expand their catalog by seeking out composers and musicians while also beginning to focus on publishing books from writers, graphic designers and artists of various mediums.

Chicago emcee and poet, Joey Price stops in to talk about his journey from college student to recording artist with WeekendGabe.
Joey Price was born on February 26th, 1988. He grew up on Chicago ’s Westside, living in a house with his parents and grandparents. A few years later he and his parents relocated to the West Suburbs where he attended private school until the age of fourteen. Before graduating from grade school his grandmother passed away. He was asked to speak at his grandmother’s funeral, but he did not know what to say. The only thing he could think of was poetry. He wrote a poem about his life experiences with his grandmother and after he was done he instantly felt better. Years past and he continued writing poetry about life issues that concerned him. Eventually he perfected his skills in poetry and his friends told him he should turn his poems into raps. He was finally confident enough in his skills to announce himself as a solo artist. His songs touch on so many subjects in life, and they do not follow the trends of commercial rap. He is influenced by artists he feels he can relate to such as Lupe Fiasco, Common, Kanye West, and Andre 3000. Joey Price is full of energy, creative and prolific.

Shawn Childress, who releases funky hip-hop tracks under the name Awdazcate, has a thing for waffles. It’s in the name of his loose collective (Waffle Gang), his online radio show (Waffle Season), and his annual festival, aka Waffle Fest, which celebrates this city’s underground hip-hop scene. Since its debut in 2011 the bash has showcased a multigenerational array of local acts, and Waffle Fest Four is no different: the bill includes Molemen rapper Astonish, long-grinding rapper Longshot, and Wogz, a youngster who raps, sings, and plays violin. – Chicago Reader

Moulded by Chicago’s thriving local music scene, and formed in the the city’s western suburbs in 2012, The Moose is comprised of brothers Mitch (bass) and Matt (lead vocals/guitar) Bellock, and childhood pal Dave Catanese (drums). With heavy influences from bands like Manchester Orchestra, The White Stripes, Every Time I Die, and Pearl Jam, the group’s cathartic ballads present a constant lyrical clash between fiction and non fiction, driven by heavy handed, powerful chords laced with subtle complexities, and underscored with smooth but intricate bass parts that tend to take the place of lead guitar. The trio released their latest EP, “No Wick,” in February 2017. No Wick is the sister EP to its predecessor, “All Wax” (June 2016). After a recent recording session at noteworthy Panda Studios in California, The Moose has an LP in their back pocket, with plans to release new music in the new year.

Hand Practices are a four piece psychedelic rock band from Chicago, IL. None of the members are particularly virtuosic at their instruments, nor do any of them look particularly cool. However, they do have some redeeming qualities. For starters, they are relatively punctual for a band whose only unofficial endorsement is from an anonymous weed farmer. Oh yeah, and they write songs that have killer melodies, catchy hooks, and sneakily complex arrangements. From groovy, swinging, meter-bending, poppy tunes to sprawling, droning sonic monoliths, Hand Practices carves out albums and live sets that pull the listener along some somehow cohesive journey that detours at every strange roadside attraction along the way. With the self-release of their first full-length record, Caterpillar, in late 2014 and a handful of trippy singles, Hand Practices is moving forward musically with their sophomore effort Magnum Dopus, 9 songs that deconstruct music and lyrically ponder its value while hoping that the undercurrent of the songs themselves are redemption enough to prove itself wrong.

As Chicago’s music scene continues to emerge into the national music spotlight, there’s one artist who has taken his pop and hip hop sensibility to an international level. Pmartt is the new sensation, whose sound rivals Akon, Flo Rida and Sean Kingston, with melodic pop tempos and a hip hop vibe.
Pmartt was born Martial Njiemoun in Cameroon, Africa. Pmartt came to the United States at the age of 10, barely speaking anything other than his native tongues of French and Bamoun. As time progressed, Pmartt began to learn the English language, later on leading him to discover his passion for music. Pmartt has been determined to conquer the ears of his fans around the nation performing at national events, concerts, music conferences, festivals, fashion shows, talent shows and much more. Pmartt has featured in venues that are nationally respected such as South By Southwest. Pmartt has written, recorded, and performed new material tirelessly, making a name for himself in the hot independent music scene across Chicago. While doing so he simultaneously continues to rub elbows with A-List stars that inspire promote and increase awareness of his unique sound.
After releasing his single “Caught In Love”, his career has begun to heat up as the single followed up with a music video and requests for major performances throughout Chicago and beyond.
He was recently casted on MTV’s new docu-series, “Time’s Up” which premiered on MTV in March 2014. Airing in over 7 countries, including Holland, Germany, Italy, Latin America, Switzerland, UK, Pmartt’s single “Caught In Love” is also featured on the show. PMARTT has opened up for major acts such as R&B superstar Lloyd, Jeremih, Travis Porter and Kendrick Lamar’s TDE.
Pmartt’s successes continued with being nominated for the Afro Entertainment’s New Comer Award, obtaining a Bachelor’s in Music Business from Columbia College Chicago and performing at Manifest which is one of Columbia College’s largest artist showcase in the Midwest.
Bria Royal is a multidisciplinary artist from the west side of Chicago whose brain is hardwired in such a way that necessitates art and visual aesthetics as a mode for making meaning out of the world around her. She considers her paintings, comics, and animations to be the result of a radical healing process that she hopes others will benefit from seeing unfold, and an attempt to construct intersectionally black and indigenous mythologies for ourselves and our future liberated descendants. Much of her work centralizes black and brown womxn and femmes as identities in constant solidarity with the elements of our natural world due to parallel experiences of exploitation and resistance. bria is also a 2016 graduate of Northwestern University, where she studied Communications, Film and Psychology, and she uses those fields to guide her approach toward creative modes of storytelling through technological innovation. bria currently works for the youth media production organization Free Spirit Media curating opportunities for West and South Side youth to explore diverse forms of digital arts and expression. She is also deeply invested in the liberation of black and brown communities of color worldwide and organizes alongside fellow Chicago movement artists as a member of For The People Artists Collective. Alongside the arts, bria often facilitates workshops around themes of restorative and transformative justice, and issues related to mental health in activist spaces.

The Hustle is a young Chicago area rock’n’roll quartet in their teens. The band features Ted Ansani on bass & vocals, Tommy Hinds on guitar & lead vocals, Alex O’Malley on the drums, and Andrew Pridmore on keyboard and guitar. Growing up surrounded by great music and touring musicians, Teddy’s dad, Ted Ansani plays in Material Issue, and Alex’s dad, Sean O’Malley plays in The Safes, these kids had no choice but to follow in their footsteps of playing fun, catchy, rock’n’roll. These boys have rocked basements, house parties, talent shows, and probably would even play hydrant flushings if asked; they love to rock’n’roll. Now, The Hustle has bursted onto the Chicago music scene, playing shows at Township and Chop Shop, as well as being featured on the Chicago Vibe’s showcase, “Dishin’ at Dimos”.
Chai Tulani was born in Nakuru, Kenya and raised in Chicago, IL. His first official mixtape “Visionz of Zion” was featured on the front page of datpiff.com in May of 2013. After gaining some attention from his first mixtape he began working on his second mixtape, "Cloud High Vybes", which was released on April 19th, 2014. His launch of the mixtape had a great start. Luna Grey is an abstract music artist originally born in Madison, WI before moving to Chicago by as a teenager. While she was born in Madison, her mothers side was from a small town in Iowa while her father and relatives were born in Chicago where she often found herself visiting family. While growing up she always found herself wanting to be different from her peers and has since been heavily involved in the arts ranging from Hip Hop dance to painting and found herself excelling in any form of self expression. Her father created a TV network in Madison with his degree in Radio & Television and he would often bring her to the station where she was exposed very early to the industry and would spend a lot of time at his radio station doing voiceover work as well as doing acting roles for her dad’s TV network. In her young years she was heavily influenced by The Beatles and as a teen began falling in love with hip hop music as her older brother began to listen to lots of Jay-Z and Kanye West. At the age of 15 she began writing songs and raps and found it to be her true passion. At the age of 19 she began to pursue music full force as she realized that college wasn’t for her and that music was the only thing that made her have purpose. Since then she has released two studio EP’s multiple singles, music videos and has performed in four different states as well as doing a small tour in New York City in early 2017. Luna Grey’s musical style began with Hip Hop as she began rapping and slowly developed her melodic singing voice throughout the years. She now makes music that is a blend of hip hop, pop, rap, rock and often is left without a category as it often combines multiple genres with unique lyricism, flows and a unique style that adds harmonies throughout her raps as well as being versatile with beat choice. Often her sound is very airy and ambient and she speaks mainly based on her own experiences as she has an interesting story from her years struggling to find happiness and battling severe depressions. Luna’s music will comfort you because she speaks from emotion and feelings and makes music that is relatable to so many people and experiences. She is currently working on her third studio album and multiple visions and is looking forward to showcasing her new and groundbreaking sound.

Devoid of or antagonistic to sociable instincts or practices – Alouette is a rock duo from Chicago, formed in 2015 when endless posted a “bedroom punk” demo on the diy forums, and dB, Austin, TX transplant, replied. The two formed a band, one-half raspy vocals and guitar, one-half pulsing drums, discarded matter and refuse, the buzz on a telephone, over mutual love of Fugazi, PJ Harvey and linguistics. They began to play shows around Chicago in 2016 and their début EP, “Psychomotor,” is out now on tape and Bandcamp.

Tony Patagonia has been putting in work and crafting his flow for years now. A veteran of Seven Oddities Records. His tracks are a breath of fresh air among the everyday bull shit heard on the radio. His style brings a flavor from the streets that anybody can relate to that’s been through the struggle. He released his first solo album entitled “Out On Bond” in 2009 on Seven oddities Records. This albums got some pure heat on it. He decided to release it for free digital download that same year. Since then he has also released 2 more solo albums, “Paint Pussy Paid” and “Dodging Traffic”, both very solid albums with different feels. All in all, Prone brings a fluent style to the table. From the gutters of the streets straight to your mother fucking ear drums! He is definitely an artist on many aspects. Quoted by many to have a live show that is unmatched in raw energy, Prone’s stage show is something you definitely want to experience. One of the hardest working cats on the label, Prone seems to be ALWAYS working on a new album no matter the time. He takes his craft seriously and it shows through his work ethic around the studio.

Jamal Science – Bradford Jamal Clark, better known as Jamal Science was born on January 20 1986 in the Northwest side of Chicago. Being the eldest of three boys, he always looked up to his father “Hitman” who was a part of a rap group in the early 90′s. Other emcees that had a great influence on him were Nas & Rakim. By the age of 12, he developed a huge passion for hip-hop. He then went on doing numerous talent shows at Foreman High school. When former classmates are asked what they remember most about Brad, they often reminisce how this kid used to battle everyone all around school. Lunchroom, during class, outside of school, in the halls-you name it the kids done it. He then went into Wilbur Wright College and participated in several open mics, and was featured in the local news paper twice.
Sage, The 64th Wonder – Receo Thomas Gibson, also known as Säge, The 64th Wonder is an MC and Producer born in Harvey, IL and raised in Country Club Hills. Throughout his early years Säge would spend his days after school watching excessive amounts of Anime and playing video games (Something all 90’s kids can relate to.) With that becoming a daily routine for Säge he would eventually develop the ability to conceptualize his own side stories inspired by anime such as Dragon Ball, Ronin Warriors, and Mobile Suit: Gundam!, etc.
Oz Syed – Osmahn Syed, better known by his stage name “Oz”, is a freshman at ISU, who has been building his buzz as a rapper since high school. Oz hails from Carol Stream, IL, where he attended Glenbard North High School. Oz began releasing music his senior year of high school, and he started garnering attention from peers and his buzz grew. Oz is motivated by doubters, who underestimate him because of his skin color, his goal: Start a movement, and eliminate stereo types in rap music, while creating a lane for kids with the same ambition who face the same stigma. By signing with Life In Motion Entertainment (L.I.M.E) Oz is ready to take his career to the next level, and let the music speak for itself. Welcome to the world of “OZ” enjoy the journey!
Born in the Little Village Neighborhood of Chicago Marley Weathers took interest in music while attending Saucedo Scholastic Academy in the city’s Southside. He Joined the school elementary school band in the fourth grade where he picked up the Saxophone. While in the school band he was accepted in a Private Music Program at the time called Merit School of music, where he acquired one on one attention on theory, composition and Performance. At the age of 13 he watched as a Latin Influenced Orchestra named “Sonrisa Tropical” was performing at his elders sisters quince party. He gathered next to them after their performance and asked for some sheet music where the director asked him what he played. Marley told him that he played the saxophone in where the director gave him a business card and told him to call him because he might have a position available to fill if he could handle the part. A few weeks later Marley was performing in clubs all over the city playing the baritone saxophone with the Latin orchestra “Sonrisa Tropical”.
While the band has just finished its sixth CD, its four members are no strangers to the Chicago music scene. GO TIME! is comprised of former Prairie Town members Scott Niekelski (composer/lead guitar/vocals), Marko Marketti (bass), Steve Grzenia (percussion) and Paul Schmidt (Guitar) formerly of the Cromulents and the Shifties. GO TIME! officially formed in 2009.
The band members have like-minded musical tastes and settled into a harder-edged, power pop groove. Scott is a prolific song writer. “Speak” was released in 2009, “Hit It” in December 2010, “ Boneshaker in January 2012, “Tight Like Wood” in 2013m “Ratsel” in January 2015 and now “Six” in January 2016.
Deeply submerged in amped up jangle and buzz, along with a healthy dose of subtle pop riffs GO TIME recorded in their home studio and mastered with Mike Hagler at King Size Sound Labs known for mixing and mastering bands such as Wilco, Neko Case, The New Pornographers, The Redwalls, John Langford, The Mekons, Billy Bragg, Ezra Furman and Caliphone, just to name a few.

Singer-songwriter Peter Joly originally from Buffalo NY, began writing and performing live in his late teens. Honing his writing style and live stage show while driving a cab throughout his early/ mid 20’s, Peter relocated to Chicago in 1993 and has performed in and around the city and midwest since that time, gaining attention for his work with the bands Big Breakfast and For Pilots. Peter wrote all of the music for both of these projects.
Peter, released his first self titled album in October 2016, an album that features contributions from top local musicians, including Jon Williams, Josh Piet (The Hoyle Brothers), Ryley Walker contributor Charles Rumback, Joe Adamik (Iron & Wine) and Gerald Dowd (Frisbie).
All original material, the record was recorded at various studio locations including MINBAL and Strobe Recording in Chicago, and Elecric Lady in New York City (All the songs were mixed and mastered by Phil Joly in Brooklyn, NYC). Peter celebrated the release with a packed house at Chicago’s famous Hideout Inn, back in November 2016.

100 Options is a regional musical collective formed in Ohio and now bas Pop/R&B singer; songwriter; dancer and self-taught musician Nikki Hayes is not your typical artist. Alongside her natural ability to cross over to any genre of music, she is more of a vocal powerhouse to be reckoned with.
There’s this album by Sly and the Family Stone called “Fresh”. It’s a sloppy, passionate record with all kinds of technical “problems”. The bass is all fuzzy on some tunes, sometimes you can barely hear the horns, and you can hear Sly giving the engineer directions a couple of tracks. Despite that, or because of it, the record is packed with the kind or raw soul that we could only dream of capturing. We all heard the record at slightly different times, but when we met, we knew we wanted to make that kind of music. Many years, shows and albums later, we’ve covered a lot of ground. After the debut self-titled album was released, we won high marks from Chicago’s Reader, Tribune, and Sun-Times, and were selected by the Chicago Historical Society as the band that “best represented to the contemporary music scene what the Beatles did in their early days in Liverpool and Hamburg.” That last one kind of took our breath away. Getting compared to the Beatles is the kind of thing we only dreamed of.
Bands don’t usually last 15 years. And bands sure as hell don’t usually put out their best record after 15 years. But Sequoia’s never paid much mind to the norm, and they still don’t with their 2016 release “SHOTS”, their first foray into vinyl and finest output to date.
Dig in and you’ll find them busting out squalling anthems and running them headlong into apocalyptic instrumentals. The lyrics reflect a growing uncertainty with the world around them and inside their own bodies. Terrifying health scares and true heartbreaks have fueled gray hairs and whiskey nights that drip from the monolithic riffs and Wade Work’s weathered vocals.
This is crank-it stuff, sure, but it’s headphone stuff too. It’s backyards in the summer and fireplace huddling in the winter. It’s love and death, smile and cry, lump in your throat and fists in the air rock music.

Hemmingbirds is an indie alternative rock band from Chicago. The band began as a solo project of singer/guitarist/violist Yoo Soo Kim in the fall of 2009. The recordings from the solo project expanded into what would ultimately become the full-fledged band. In 2012, they released their latest album, “The Vines of Age” and have since been Alternative Press’ AP&R Band of the Day and more.

Ego has been into music for as far as he can remember, from singing in pre school graduations to learning to manipulate words to impress the 7th grade girls via poetry. Forced to attend church by his adoptive grandparents, eGo quickly learned to entertain a crowd by becoming one of the soloists in his youth choir. Kirk Franklin ain’t got nothing on this guy. Currently eGo is working diligently to build his catalog and finish his second official project. He’s worked with some pretty cool people, from the likes of Chance The Rapper to producer C Sick to the legendary street wear brand Leaders 1354. In 2016 eGo jumped into putting his ideas into clothes, starting his line Persona Chicago which he filters merchandise through. He also owns a lifestyle brand entitled No Chill Chicago, Chicago over everything. Right?
With over 25 shows on record, Many Places fields an energetic set of indie folk rock. In addition to local Chicago venues including the Empty Bottle, Schubas and Lincoln Hall, they’ve been featured on Daytrotter, WXRT’s Local Anesthetic and performed at an unofficial SXSW Brooklyn Vegan day party during their time together since 2010. These long-time friends gather every week to write and rehearse in their practice space in Logan Square.
Joe George is a boy who loves songs. He loves writing them, loves singing them, and loves and sharing them. He has always felt at home while creating music, which has taken him to many places with different projects. As Joe creates songs, he creates his home. A place where his emotions and thoughts can live, and be shared with whoever comes-a-knockin.’
Joe has written and recorded a brand new debut solo record. This record, self-titled ‘Joe George,’ is filled with lush colors and patient space. It is a collection of thoughtful, empathetic songs that deal with reflection, conflict, and simple wonder. The songs are recorded with mostly acoustic instruments, including piano, acoustic guitar, upright bass, drums, and a string quartet.
Aside from songwriting, Joe does some work with Chicago company, Reverb.com. He performs and presents gear demos, lesson videos, and some other interesting and entertaining content.

Capturing the feel of 70’s punk rock and modernizing the Runaways, these ladies are bound to grab your attention with the first note. Inspired through a broad range of influences covering the Avengers to the Damned, they’re ready to rock.
The art of survival is not an easy task, while living in the cold hard streets of Englewood. It seems that all young Black men from Chicago are the only ones who have to deal with harassment or ostracism, but the “Loudpack Team” doesn’t use this as an excuse to press forward. Although, violence and gunshots ring out in their neighborhood every hour, the music continues.
The Loud Pack Team are a new strain of Hip Hop, a different kind of lyricism. Over the years, the crew has assembled a total package of musical geniuses, magnetic charisma, and business acumen The team consists of two lyricists, King Bone and Young Flash. Also, Scotty G (songwriter and hype man) contribute to the team’s solid structure.
Meristems finds a way to split the level of fuzzy punk and soft lyrical lines. Grace Urrutia’s voice acts as a soothing melody over distorted guitars and intricate counter-melodies. Her literary message comes through in lyrics, where Hemingway and H. P. Lovecraft act as inspiration to the songs structures. The lo-fi sound production adds to the grungy undertones, yet the dissonant build-ups and mellow drones create a sense of uneasiness and wonder.
Born and raised in the West Town community of Chicago, Na$im’s broad taste in music genres has matured him as a producer and DJ. With influences from several composers, Na$im’s creativity categorizes itself.
Na$im Williams in recent years has emerged as one of the biggest talents coming out of Chicago within its renaissance of hip-hop with his cutting edge production and his life-of- the-party DJ sets. On the production side has released various highly acclaimed instrumental projects which revolve around the beat-smith’s unique and diverse sound. Na$im has a niche sound which ranges from older sampled based records to heavy hitting trap sounds. Apart from this he has also produced records for the likes of Treated Crew, Mic Terror, Gzus Piece, Sulaiman, Nick Jr, PST Saint, ShowYouSuck and Lili K amongst other artists. When he’s not in the studio working on future hit- records, Na$im is in heavy rotation spinning throughout Chicago’s busy nightlife. Initially starting via the college/university circuit he is now opening up for the likes of Travis Scott, GLC and Boldy James whilst frequenting various other nightclubs and venues around the United States.

Rahkal C. D. Shelton is an author, visionary, media specialist and mentor. Passionate about serving and impacting culture, she loves volunteering, educating and empowering youth through mentorship. Over the last decade, Rahkal has worked in sports, news and entertainment media. She has experience both on and off camera with talents ranging from hosting, coordinating, producing and directing.
Rahkal is a proud alumna of Texas Southern University and a graduate of Governors State University where she completed her master’s in media communication. With numerous undergrad accomplishments in broadcasting, scholarships and publishing, Rahkal left quite a legacy in college, which prepared her for an incredible career in broadcast media.
Quinn Tsan began her career as a back-up singer. After relocating from Minneapolis to Chicago in 2007, she collaborated with artists like Joe Pug, Rachele Eve, Tony Trimm, and others, co-writing verses on hip hop tracks, touring the midwest, providing harmonies on the 2012 EP ‘Wife Songs.’
In 2012, Tsan was invited to join the ensemble for The Fly Honey Show, an annual production by The Inconvenience that spans a 2000+ person audience each year. In 2013, Tsan became a featured musician and dancer and has since become a founding company member of the show.
Shortly after, Tsan began writing and performing her own music, initially recording a collection of original songs with Liam Cunningham (Kids These Days, Marrow) and Dorian Gehring (Exit Ghost, Marrow). In 2014, Tsan’s debut EP Good Winter was released to an overwhelming response from listeners and was called “an artist with the sort of drive and purpose that many spend years trying to achieve”, by The Chicago Tribune. Following the release of the EP, Tsan produced Bedrooms, a short dance film choreographed by celebrated Chicago Artists Erin Kilmurray and Josh Anderson, with music by Tsan. Since its release in Fall, 2015, Bedrooms has appeared in four festivals and taken home prizes in three.
Tsan’s forthcoming album, London, KY, was recorded by Dorian Gehring in Daniel Boone National Park in Kentucky, and will be released on October 18th, 2016. The album was performed and produced by Tsan, Dorian Gehring, Liam Cunningham, Michael Golas, Nick Broste, Raul Callejero, Sima Cunningham, and Tim Young.

SUBSTANCE hit the ground running releasing their first mix tape “Raw Substance” Hosted by Dj Shaun T. During this time they developed buzz worthy notoriety through performances throughout the Midwest. They also received the award of best local hip hop group at the “Midwest Rappers Ball” at the Regal Theater. They established a respectable following and then released the now critically acclaimed mixtape “Substance Muzik”. They also released their “Substance Abuse” mixtape, which is the final installment of their “Substance Series” mixtapes. During this time Substance continued to perform locally and regionally at venues such as “The Mayne Stage” (1st and only Hip Hop group to do so) (Chicago), “The Brass Rail” (Peoria, Illinois), “Cause Sound bar” (Minneapolis, MN), etc. Riding off the success of the “Substance Series” mixtapes, Substance developed a organic momentum that led into 2012. March 2012 Substance received a placement to perform at the Red Gorilla/SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, Invited to attend Rhymesayers “Soundset Festival”, and first performance at the ‘A3C Festival”! (Kevinnottigham Underground Express Stage) Substance also released their fourth mixtape “Contra Mixtape” on August 1st 2012. Substance has released their debut album “No Grey Area” produced by All Purpose Beatz in October of 2013. The album is available on digital outlets such iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, etc. They also had the opportunity to perform with Slum Village on their “Dirty Slums Tour” during the summer of 2013 and performed with The Lox and Talib Kweli in 2014. The momentum didn’t stop in 2015 when they open up for Black Milk twice, released their sophomore project “Dope” featuring DrtyGnus and solo projects “Andreaus Haley” (Dat Bizness) and “Gordo” (ILL Gordon). Now in 2016, they are preparing to release the third project “Masterpiece” produced by Drty Gnus They are currently seeking out touring opportunities regionally, nationally, and internationally.

K'Valentine began her lyrical journey by writing poetry to get out emotions she wanted to express. After a chance meeting with world renowned poet laureate Dr. Maya Angelou before she passed, K'Valentine was encouraged to practice until she mastered her craft. Vaya is a three-piece. Their sound has been described as “Afro-pop played at 45RPM” and “math rock meets excellent songwriting”. The band merges a wide range of influences and sensibilities with the rhythms and technical agility of Midwestern math rock. Having released a single and an EP, the trio’s first full-length will be released in March 2014.
On Record Store Day 2015, James Rawson played a 12-hour concert that spanned three record stores. Why? This day long performance pushed his Record Store Day pre-release of Tristan & Isolde. “Instead of a regular Kickstarter, I wanted to give my fans something more special. On Record Store Day 2015, James Rawson played a 12-hour concert that spanned three record stores. Why? This day long performance pushed his Record Store Day pre-release of Tristan & Isolde. “Instead of a regular Kickstarter, I wanted to give my fans something more special. Continuing with a musically diverse sound, Kastaway tells a story of physical, spiritual and musical strength in Who I Am which features some of his most revealing lyricism to date.

Vamplifier, the brainchild of Scott Shehan, has seen many line-ups and iterations over the years, but the trio of Shehan (guitar, vocals), Jane Hanna (bass, keys, vocals), and Chris Negrete (drums, vocals) have been the core of the band for almost a decade. They are a close-knit family – literally: Shehan and Hanna are married, and Negrete was their only wedding guest! – and their deep friendship and respect for one another comes through in their democratic songwriting, and unique style which blends their individual influences into a hard-to-pin-down sound.

ScholaR Comics is inspired by the real life events of the creator and illustrator, Vicko Alvarez. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas and currently living on the south side of Chicago, Vicko is one of five children born to working class immigrant parents. The stories told in ScholaR Comics reflect a clashing of cultures and generations. The comics use lighthearted, sometimes humorous events to tell otherwise tough stories of growing up Latina in a low-income neighborhood.
A tour de force of the Chicago music scene, Hood Smoke has been making lasting impressions on listeners all over the world since the release of their debut album, 2012’s Laid Up In Ordinary.

Founded by Michael Downing in early 2015 following the release the debut album I Won’t Let the World Become a Prison, S/N first performed on Chicago Que4 Radio’s The Flabby Hoffman Show as an acoustic trio featuring Kayla Comerford and Matthew Dealy. S/N has since performed all over Chicago at venues including Underground Lounge, The Elbo Room, The Burlington, and recently as the opener for internationally touring band Little May at Chicago’s famous Schubas Tavern.

The Chicago quartet was named one of AbsolutePunk’s “Absolute 100” bands of 2015 and with the release of Stay, Tiny Kingdoms continues to build on this praise.
Well Yells is darkwave, ghostly sounds, surreal lyrics that construct their own logic. It imagines the entity that you call to at the bottom of a well, or what it’s like to be inside a well. It’s the solo project of Chicagoan Patrick Holbrook, who wanted to do something with the music fragments he could remember from his dreams, and make a portal to his teenage days, when he learned to play bass by following along to Joy Division and Bauhaus songs. More recently, he runs the record label Hairy Spider Legs, and was in the music project Laughing Eye Weeping Eye with his wife Rebecca Schoenecker. Well Yells has drawn comparisons to The Cure, John Carpenter, The Legendary Pink Dots, Clan of Xymox, and A Certain Ratio.

Mean Sea Level weaves one-man eternal tropicalian fantasy recordings, at one glance gently fingerpicked and introspective, and alternately swallowing the heaviness of the universe in intricate bumping gulps. Mean Sea Level is the recording project of Brett Barton, Chicago-based singer, composer and engineer. This side project is a vehicle for reflection and exploration, for discovering new arrangements and sound combinations. Live, Mean Sea Level is joined by Don Ogilvie on drums (Pedal Steel Transmission, Stick Season) and Gary Pyskacek on upright bass (Pedal Steel Transmission, The Part Five).
Black Japan formed in 2013, all members hailing from previous heavy hitting groups. Black Japan is comprised of members David on Lead Guitar, Santos on Bass, Kao Rock on Drums and Val on Vocals. The music takes aim to try and inspire strength and humility in its listeners, who want to claim a casino bonus, while encouraging opposition to anything that degrades and depreciates us.
Natalie Chami adopted the TALsounds moniker in 2009 for her solo explorations in the drone, ambient, and electro-acoustic improv disciplines. In live performance, Chami’s analog synthesizers weave together into drifting loops that evolve in tandem with her vocal leads and choral harmonies. Her meditative sessions stretch into hypnotizing depths of stream-of-consciousness multi-instrumental input, sinking into expanses of infinite sustain and cresting into bursts of noise from an arsenal of oscillators and effects pedals. As a member of free music trio Good Willsmith, she has toured the country and released eight albums since 2012, including the LPs The Honeymoon Workbook (2014) and Things Our Bodies Used To Have (2016) on Mexico City-based label Umor Rex. Chami performs as half of ambient duo l’eternebre, and co-founded the experimental collective/netlabel Screaming Claws. She was born in Ontario and lives in Chicago.

The Braided Janes is a bilingual post punk latin rock band from Chicago, Il USA. The trio consists of Juny Alvarez on electronic drums, Andrew Doyle on bass and Jessica Rodriguez on keyboard and vocals.
Each member of the band brings a unique flavor to their music. Andy's background in jazz bass paired with Juny's latin rhythm and Jessica's thought provoking lyrics braid together a sonic work of art in every song. The Braided Janes have successfully mastered the ability to transcend through genres and language barriers, creating a unique and refined style they can truly call their own.
Aside from their tremendous friendship and love of music, the Braided Janes share a vision for social change. Their mission is to create music that moves people on a deeper level - Inspired by their own desire to make a difference in an apathetic world, they hope to inspire listeners to listen to their inner voice and stand up for what is right.

Melkbelly is a 4 piece noise-rock band from Chicago. The group is made up of Red Delicious, folk mystery from Providence, RI, one-half of Ree-Yees, the electronic noise/drum duo out of Kansas, and the Winters wargs, Bart and Liam.
This is CIMMfest, the Chicago International Movies & Music Festival—a four-day showcase of outstanding films, energetic concerts, visually stunning VJ/DJ sets, lively Q&A’s, daring live score performances, industry panels and presentations…anything to show just what movies and music mean to each other.
Each Spring filmmakers, musicians, and their passionate fans alike, descend upon Wicker Park and Logan Square, two of Chicago’s most eclectic, vibrant neighborhoods. That’s where CIMMfest takes place—the films by day, the live music by night—at theaters, galleries, bars, concert spaces, and some of the city’s most storied venues.
The films come from all countries and cultures, and range from documentaries to fiction to concert films to shorts to music videos. They just have to be about music and/or use music in a creative, integral way. The live performances are inspired by film or feature visual accompaniment.
In 2013, CIMMfest expanded its music section to include more than fifty bands, twenty venues and a footprint along Milwaukee Avenue that stretches nearly two miles. CIMMcon also made it’s debut in 2013, bringing together nearly sixty innovators, tastemakers, industry leaders and more in a series of fifteen free panels exploring everything from State of the Recording Industry to how to Kickstart your Film.
CIMMfest was imagined and brought to life by musician Josh Chicoine (Cloudbirds, The M’s) and filmmaker Ilko Davidov (BulletProof Film). Neither knew what he was getting into at the start, but hundreds of films, thousands of attendees and countless incredible experiences later, CIMMfest is a publicized, respected Chicago fixture.
Mike Petruccelli is a songwriter and musician located in Chicago, IL. He is an Ohio native and graduated from Ohio University for audio production. He has a minor in music as well. He arrived in Chicago in the summer of 2010 and has been playing shows and causing trouble since early 2011.
His music has been released on Death to False Hope Records and also featured on compilations for Artistic Integrity Records and Johann’s Face Records. His bands Rapids and Tens both started in 2014 and are both currently active, playing around the Chicago area and throughout the Midwest.
His latest release “Don’t Make This Weird” was released in January of 2016 and it was featured on AV Club, Punktastic’s POV segment, and Chicago Music. It took him 3.5 years to complete and is a labor of love.
DIMWAVES is a four piece rock n roll outfit that writes catchy yet dark songs in the veins of 80s new wave and contemporary. And not necessarily on purpose. It’s like something you recognize, except it’s totally new and satisfying. These boys have played music together throughout the years in various Chicago acts such as Gypsyblood and Karma with a K. They play loud and proud. March 26th @ Metro marks their third live show as DIMWAVES. Anticipate a rockin’ debut record this summer 2016.
Astro Samurai from the absence of space and time. Soul visions and intergalactic projections. This alternative band has been tearing up the Chicago music scene since their debut in winter of 2015. Their intricate music has hit the stages of Double Door, Reggie’s Rock Club, and Lincoln Hall. Inspired by the likes of D’ Angelo, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Erykah Badu, this band promises a dynasty of fresh, soulful, sweet, psychedelic music.
Tiny Fireflies are an electronic dream pop band that layer vintage synthesizers and drum machines underneath the airy vocals of songwriter, Kristine Capua. Although based in Chicago, their debut record, ‘The Space Between’ was produced with the Transatlantic assistance of Ian Catt (Saint Etienne, The Field Mice) in London. The result is a collection of lush, kinetic songs that represent where Tiny Fireflies are now as musicians and as people.

DownVega is an indie-pop trio from Chicago, Illinois, comprised of producer Jimmy Con (Comasoft, Ghosthouse), vocalist Beccy Schneider and Sam Lalk on bass. Brought together through a chance connection via craigslist, Beccy stumbled upon Jimmy’s ad soliciting a vocalist for a studio project. The two began writing in the spring of 2015 for their debut EP to be released on independent Toronto imprint, The Marigold Label.
Drawing on the influence of artists like Chvrches, FKA Twigs and Whitney Houston, DownVega’s powerful debut single “Give You My Love” weaves Beccy’s sultry vocals with crystalline synthesizers and bold beats. The song evokes the tension of desire with lyrics of sympathetic longing — potent enough to glow in the dark.
Impulsive Hearts is Danielle Sines. She sings, shouts, plays guitar and synth, and records noises on tape recorders. She likes melodies that remind her of summertime. John Paul plays bass, guitar, saxophone, keys, and sings. Dan Julian plays percussion.
My Gold Mask started as an experimental home recording project between longstanding collaborators Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo. Since then the bands music has been featured in numerous blogs, fashion shows and on tv. But My Gold Mask’s true passion and focus has always been exploring new musical territory and growing as artists.
Not concerned with classifications, My Gold Mask’s songs bring to mind their own unique blend of cross boundary influences while a unifying “dark pop” undercurrent threads together their ever growing catalog.
In 2013 Gretta and Jack were joined by drummer James Andrew, who along with longtime producer Balthazar de Ley, has helped push the band into more electronic territory.
Currently the band is focused on releasing a series of digital singles that piece by piece are completing a larger tapestry. With the additional help of producer Sanford Parker and remixes featuring some of the bands favorite artists, these singles point to the future of My Gold Mask as they continue their journey of discovery and emotion.
Malafacha is a Ska band with Reggae and Latin rhythms that was formed in 2003 in Pilsen’s Hispanic Bohemian neighborhood in Chicago, IL. Malafacha has 10 members, Moises- lead voice, Alejandro-drums, Ivan-sax and alto choirs, Ezequiel-bass, Abad-trombon, Jorge P. -trumpet, Armando-percussions, Jorge B. -timbales, Isaac-guitar and Charlie 1st guitar. All different personalities and musical tendencies between the band members has brought the band to obtain an original sound with a base of Ska, Reggae and Latin rhythms mixed with Punk, Metal, Cumbia, Rock, Disco and an endless fusion of genres that makes of Malafacha an unique band.
Hemmingbirds is an indie alternative rock band from Chicago. The band began as a solo project of singer/guitarist/violist Yoo Soo Kim in the fall of 2009. The recordings from the solo project expanded into what would ultimately become the full-fledged band. In 2012, they released their latest album, “The Vines of Age” and have since been Alternative Press’ AP&R Band of the Day and more.
Oh yeah, it’s back. Returning to the Empty Bottle for the first time since December 2014 is WAFFLE FEST, in it’s sixth incarnation, and it’s bigger and better than ever. This delicious hip-hop showcase is organized and hosted by AWDAZCATE, aka SHAWN CHILDRESS. The show, which starts at 9pm, and will feature short sets by Jeremiah Jae, 7oddz, D2G, Pinqy Ring, Slot A, Mic Terror (Treated Crew), Milly Mango, Vapor Eyes, Encyclopedia Brown, Nikko McFadden, Finale. The evening will also feature comedy by Jason Earl Folks, as well as special guest performances, and music DJed by VAPOR EYES throughout the night.

Sadie & The Stark is a Chicago stewed fantasy rock band.The song lyrics are loosely inspired by sci-fi and fantasy literature and the sound has been compared to the likes of PJ Harvey, Mazzy Star, a female Nick Cave, and The Kills.

Wellthen is a 4 piece indie rock band from Chicago comprised of Aurelio Damiani, Christian Fields, Andy Berlien, and Matt Perich. The 4 friends came together over a year ago with the notion of just hanging out and playing some garage rock tunes. Now, the band is nearly ready to release their first full length LP due out sometime this Spring.
Small Tines, Chicago’s newest addition to its thriving synth-pop scene, will play their debut show at Schubas on Thursday, January 28th with New York native Tor Miller.
While the group’s brand of dark, lyrically-driven pop will be new to audiences, the faces in the band are familiar. The band is comprised of ex-When Clouds Attack members and Chicago musicians Todd Baran and Andy Angelos.
Atom Meets Bomb are bringing a large, haunting sound with memorable and simple messages to the progressive / indie pop-rock scene. Their songs range from amped up, straight forward sing a longs, emotional pleas, to diverse progressions that hit home on the choruses and wrap up the audience like a warm hug.
Atom Meets Bomb, based out of Chicago Illinois, was developed in 2014 by August Fuller He has established deep roots in the Chicago music scene with other successful past and current acts like Bread & Bottle (Johanns Face Records), Repellents (VML Records), Calling All Cars (Studio 127 Records), and his Rock & Soul Preservation band the Soda Jerks.
August, wanting to explore different sounds, has gone back to his music baptism and early roots of late 70’s punk / 80’s new wave and incorporating hints of dream pop tones. He envisioned having a female singer to soften the edges of the music and recruited co-worker Raquel Geverola after she had played him a video of her singing along with a backing piano being played by future AMB bass player Frank Jeffrey. Raquel’s engaging vocals and Augusts’ musical creations were the main foundation for Atom Meets Bomb.
Ben Marshall’s earliest memories of music were dancing around the house singing along to Elton John and Beatles records with his family when he was just a child. By age 11, he was drawn to the guitar and remembers bugging his parents to buy him one. After constant persistence, he received his first guitar at the early age of 13. While the neighborhood kids were out playing, he was up in his bedroom listening and trying to jam along with Jim Croce, Muddy Waters, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Eric Clapton, and The Beach Boys records to name a few. “I had a record player and a bunch of vinyl records and I would just listen and try to play along,” says Marshall. He can remember that some of the neighbors thought it a bit odd that he spent so much time in his room. “I was just simply dedicated and was really bitten by the blues bug at an early age. I was completely focused on learning from the greats like BB King, Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters”. The sound of blues music touched a spot deep within his soul.
Kerosene Stars is an American rock band formed in Chicago, IL. The band is composed of Scott Schaafsma (bass, vocals), Andy Seagram (guitar, backing vocals), Yoo Soo Kim (viola, keyboards), Jim Adair (drums), and Tom Sorich (percussion).

It’s not all that common for a musician to release his first full-length record at the age of 34, but that’s exactly what Joel Ebner is doing. After nearly six years of false starts, mutations, and detours as City States, he’s finally completed his debut LP, Geography. Maybe it’s the perfectionism that took him so long. Or the fear of failure. Maybe he’s a late bloomer. What’s clear is that Ebner—along with the help of keyboardist / producer Steve Lund and drummer Mike Burmeister—has taken the time to create a capital-A Album: a meticulously-crafted record filled with nuance, surprise, and stylistic range.

Mechanical Joints is composed of two human males who have been creating together for a decade. We’re high-school friends grown in a fantastically boring Detroit suburb. After ten years we’re separated by roughly one thousand miles, but that hasn’t stopped us from trying something new. Rather than writing and playing in the same room, distance necessitates that we send files to each other over the internet’s spiderwebs.
Born out of a sudden and intense burst of light in 2010, The Island of Misfit Toys is Chicago’s best- and worst-kept musical secret. Larry O. Dean was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. As a young man, he worked with Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Michael Moore, published essays and reviews on popular culture in the alternative press, and also cartooned for fanzines and other underground outlets. He attended the University of Michigan, where he won three Hopwood Awards in Creative Writing, along with fellow poets John Ciardi, Robert Hayden, Jane Kenyon, and Frank O’Hara, among others; and Murray State University’s low-residency MFA program. He teaches creative writing, literature, and composition as an adjunct English instructor, and is a Poet-in-Residence in the Chicago Public Schools through the Poetry Center of Chicago’s Hands on Stanzas program. He was a recipient of the Gwendolyn Brooks Award for teaching excellence in 2004.
The state of things today is very much on the mind of frontman Jon Scarpelli and bandmate Scott Simon on the latest record by electronic-rock duo, LowSwans. The Whole World Has No Clothes is a 10-song meditation on the waning of modern society set to ambient 80’s tinged synth textures, neo-prog electronic beats and dexterous vocals. Released in November 2014 to a sold-out show, the new Low Swans record has only begun to permeate the scene. With influences as far and wide as EDM, classical minimalism and post-rock, the record is a stylistic leap from their past records. Carrying the thread is Scarpelli’s take on the complexity of the human situation and the underlying tragic beauty. While songs like “Cannibal” and “What you Wanted” harken to specific catastrophes in recent history, they ask the wider question of whether or not the calamities of the past or the future are avoidable. Other songs like “Not Today” and “All of the Lies You Settle For” complement this idea by suggesting that we can be redeemed by our relationships even while the world spins out of control. “Little Boy/Fat Man” goes so far as to suggest the massively destructive power of unexamined conflict between two people.

The vision of Ten x Ten is to go beyond a typical call-and-response collaboration by encouraging artists and musicians to deeply investigate the creative process. Over the course of eight months, participants will stretch and explore their artistic practice in a cross-media collaboration with another artist, with the results reflected back to the public through exhibitions, performances, and a collectable compilation.
S’Pocket began recording their debut EP at the end of August, with plans for a release show in November. In preparation for their first album, S’Pocket is playing two shows in Chicago over the next few months where they will share the stage with some of the Midwest’s premier up-and-coming groups. Minnesota’s own New Sound Underground and Chicago-natives, HipTrip will be co-headlining the night at Martyrs’ on Thursday, August 20th. Local funk heavies, Digeometric will headline the bill at Reggie’s Rock Club on Saturday, September 12th. The Reggie’s unofficial Riot Fest after-party will be sponsored by SweetWater Brewery as part of their ongoing live music series, SweetWater Sessions. Reggie’s will be offering free bus transportation from Riot Fest to the venue as well as free entrance to the show with RSVP through their website.

Shawn Childress, who releases funky hip-hop tracks under the name Awdazcate, has a thing for waffles. It’s in the name of his loose collective (Waffle Gang), his online radio show (Waffle Season), and his annual festival, aka Waffle Fest, which celebrates this city’s underground hip-hop scene. Since its debut in 2011 the bash has showcased a multigenerational array of local acts, and Waffle Fest Four is no different: the bill includes Molemen rapper Astonish, long-grinding rapper Longshot, and Wogz, a youngster who raps, sings, and plays violin. – Chicago Reader
The Limbos have been playing “Intelligent lounge-rock with a decorative surf flair” in Chicago for the past 5 years. As they’ve evolved from a 2-piece to a now 5-piece outfit, their sound continually surprises listeners with it’s eclectic arrangements filled with brutally honest lyrics.
In 2012 after 2 years, 3 EPs and several national tours, Chicago’s Dastardly slowed down, turned the corner and parked. The band holed up in a coach house in Wicker Park and retooled their folk-based sound, dialing in a new vision that showcases singer/songwriter/producer Gabe Liebowitz’s darkly cinematic new songs. His love of lushly produced albums came into play, with the goal of using modern recording techniques to capture the band’s tight arrangements and traditional instrumentation.
Sugarcreek Road blends a modern potpourri of folk, country, bluegrass, and gospel to create a sound that is as raw and compelling as America itself. Original Americana, hint of bluegrass, a dollop of harmony, sprinkle of experimental, dash of humor, and a speck of the unexpected.
Scott Fischer’s brain is like a vast musical amusement park and he wants to take us all on a thrilling ride. Fischer’s Flicker is the latest brainchild of Fischer and marks the next step in a musical evolution that began over 15 years ago. While Fischer’s Flicker’s debut album, “Katmandon’t” is certainly more “mature” sounding than Fischer’s previous efforts, containing none of his trademark humorous rock tunes, it stays true to the core of Fischer’s music with big melodies and ambitious composition. This, coupled with live performances that include extravagant and imaginative video installations that sync up with the band’s live performance, will make you want to jump right back in line for another ride.

Antenna is a 5 piece original rock band from Chicago with a powerful sound and Latin flare. Since 2005, Antenna has graced the stage at the Double Door, Joe’s on Weed Street, Toyota Park, Congress Theater and Concord Music Hall playing alongside Jarabe Depalo, Natalia Lafourcade, and Elefante among others. Antenna’s musical style can be traced back to diverse roots combining Mexican American culture with growing up in Chicago in the 70’s and 80’s. Influencers range from traditional Mexican music, modern Spanish rock, progressive rock, and American and British rock of the 1960’s-90’s. The band boasts a voting member of the Latin Grammies, guitarist Mario Roldán, who is originally from Guatemala City, Guatemala.
As the railyard bled into dark warehouses, the stranger found himself alone. Street after street he walked with night taking control of his senses until his ears perked at the music of sirens. The dulcet tones of violin, bass, and the female voice spiraled through the darkness from the sole source of warmth in sight. Helplessly drawn in, he found the last lit trailer in camp that seemed to have sprung forth from another time, and there–in the form of three women–was both the past and the future in one.
Ganser continues to explore themes of anxiety and desire and failure on their new single “Smelling Salts,” with an equally claustrophobic video directed by Kim Alpert, featuring model Jennifer Pham. The single shows an evolution in the band’s sound, incorporating brass and other new instrumentation with similar dissociative vocals. Alpert’s (aestheticengineer.com) work has been displayed in a variety of settings from underground experimental video showcases to the Modern Wing of the Chicago Art Institute.

Villapalooza is a non-profit, all-ages music & arts festival dedicated to creating safe spaces for arts and community engagement in Little Village.
Chris Crack is the “Jimi Hendrix of Rap”. Prevailing Chicago’s West Side scene, he combines prolific lyricism & sounds, with an infectious show. Chris Crack is the most enthralling artist in hip-hop.
Mari V is a 21-year old aspiring artist from the suburbs of Chicago. She is also a member of ViceVersa, a collaboration of artists ranging from fashion designers, producers and musicians. She derives from a hip-hop/r&b background and has been working in the studio for the past three years with CBMIX, an engineer/producer and member of Chop Squad. She is currently working on Theobalance, a mixtape that is set to be released in Fall of 2015. Kieferrofresh, another member of ViceVersa, is a star contributor to this mixtape, not only supporting Mari V, but also featuring on many of her songs and even producing for “Gone” and “Coastin”. Mari is most inspired by aspiring artists like herself, such as Kehlani, Allan Kingdom, and Chance the Rapper. Theobalance is only the beginning of her journey, so stay tuned to see what she has coming next!
Born and bred in Chicago, Marisol Vélez (also known as Pinqy Ring) has always had a passion for writing. She first shook hands with the mic at age 15 during her Sophomore year at Lane Tech High School when her love for learning Hip Hop songs turned into a curiosity to try it for herself. During her Senior year she became the first female student to rap at her school’s talent show. She vowed she would let herself feel that rush for the rest of her life…
A group of self-described music nerds, Farkus has prided themselves students of the crafts of songwriting and musicianship during their ten years as a band–disciplines singer/guitarist Tony Maguire feels have fallen by the wayside recently. “There is so much more focus on musical and lyrical hooks,” he laments about today’s current pop/rock climate. “It was substance that made us all fall in love with music, and it’s heartbreaking to see that get dismissed.”
Jet-black, rebellious and compelling, THE ØRDER is a conceptually-driven collection of womenswear created to transcend the duality of spirit we all possess. So many of us seek, almost desperately, to define ourselves- but this brand was born out of a strong belief that there is beauty in ambiguity and that we are limitless.

Hood Smoke is an American pop/rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 2010. The group consists of songwriter and bassist Bryan Doherty, lead singer Sarah Marie Young, guitarist Chris Siebold, keyboard player Rob Clearfield, and drummer Michael Caskey.
The Evening Attraction began their journey within the depths of Chicago, IL in early 2014. With recycled members from the band, The Break, this trio of bop rockers have been making their way into Chicago’s music scene ever since. Heavily influenced by 1960’s Rock and Roll bands like The Beach Boys and The Zombies as well as Bebop Jazz musicians like Cannonball Adderley these analog babies went on to record their first full length album, Almost Desperate. The ten track album was recorded on 1” analog tape at Treehouse Records during the brutal Chicago winter of 2014. Almost Desperate is a culmination of modern alternative music with early rock influences such as The Rolling Stones, Booker T & the M.G.’s, and The Who. Making it nearly impossible for people to sit still while listening to their music, The Evening Attraction has shared stages with FUTUREBIRDS, Road Kill Ghost Choir, The Boxers, YOKO and the OH NO’S, The Blisters, Pleasantry, to name a few. Moving forward the band will be playing constantly in the further months and will be recording new material mid-summer 2015.
When you have a conversation with Jon Content about his career goals, and he says that he’s not looking for longevity and doesn’t really want to be a multi-platinum selling artist…people usually take it the wrong way. But if you bother to continue the discussion long enough, you realize, it’s not for lack of ambition. Rather, a dedication to quality for however long he’s lucky enough to entertain.
Hailing from Northwest Chicago, Jonathan Adams grew up admiring the typical rapper influences-Kanye West and Common. Although his diverse, Mississippi born, military childhood abroad background, was anything but.

She’s obsessed with Bob Dylan and Kanye West, and will engage in discussion about politics, social justice, feminism, and ’90s alternative tunes as long as there’s plenty of coffee.
The product of a sympathetic nervous system askew, Fake Limbs is simultaneous fight and flight; hysteria with teeth. This dumb, lumbering beast with four backs just wants to graze and screw but when forced into a corner, it transforms ferociously. They’re part Harry and the Hendersons and part Smokey and the Bandit II (the one where all the cops get destroyed). Concussive, unrelenting percussion supports wild, desperate guitars and unhinged vocalization. They transcend both the flailing childish entitlement of the aggro and the apologetic whining of the meek. The result is uncomfortable, loud, and sexually confusing.

What began as an 8-person project-oriented acoustic folk group comprised of multi-instrumentalists, singers, songwriters, and theatre artists with a deep love for the music they made and for each other, and with a sweet down home sensibility.
They evolved, slimmed down, and plugged in. They still feature the sublime vocal harmonies layered over lush instrumental arrangements that create the rich sound you’ve come to know and love. The New Switcheroo will warm your insides, tickle your fancy, and rock you right out of your boots!
Music has affected my life in so many ways, and my ultimate intention is to evoke an emotional response in people so that they are inspired to take action and make a change in their life, or simply connect, be comforted and inspired by the stories that I tell. That is what other artists have done for me and I am truly grateful. In a nutshell, I love writing songs, telling stories and connecting with others through songwriting.
Cowboy Jesus and The Sugar Bums are Maxwell Jenkins, mandolin and lead vocals, Caden Shapiro, guitar and lead vocals, Sam Mortensen, guitar, and Chase Wilkins, drums. We are all Chicago Public School Students,ranging from 11-12 years old. We met at Old Town School of Folk Music, and with the help of our fantastic music teacher, Jonas Friddle, and support from our parents, we began playing live last summer. Our live show culminated in being awarded the Chicago Music Award for Most Talented Group Under 12 years old.
We quickly garnered a reputation for putting on great live shows which are equally fun for kids and adults. We have played Beat Kitchen, Subterranean, were featured on Green Music Fest last summer, and will be there again this summer, and also played Wicker Park Fest last summer. Our music is a wide mix of old school blues rock and roll, as well as more contemporary pop rock tunes, ranging from James Brown, Chuck Berry, the Go Go’s, The Ramones and more.

“You know you’ll never change / You’ll grow, but you’ll never stay,” sang singer/guitarist Corey Wills on “89,” the highlight of 2004’s Patterns of Nerve Cell Action EP, and rarely has a single line so prophetically summed up an entire band’s legacy. Twelve years after its inception, after reinventing itself time and time again, the band has grown, has never been content to stay the same… but has never fundamentally changed.

Armed with limber, near-acrobatic instrumentation and magnetic energy to spare, the members of The Ars Nova perform music that touches upon a venerable heritage of American genres – blues, funk, classic rock – but never overstays its welcome in any particular category. Originally started with the goal of making a dent on the summer festival circuit, this is music that’s prime rib for that arena: Constantly moving, and never stagnant; As warm as a July 4th weekend and bombastic as a fireworks display.

Craig Winston leads the Shadows like some gaunt and towering axe-man, a guitar villain with a chilling bass voice and a pension for horror stories. Across the stage, his identical twin, Mark Winston, rocks and sways with every spectral drone of his synths and the frantic clamor at his pianos. John Sturm’s drums thunder with Justin Devalliere’s bass lines, giving the Walking Shadows a haunting, other-worldly pulse.
The Walking Shadows are currently recording a 7 song collection titled “Artless Violence” which will be released this Summer, with “Blood on Our Hands” being the first single.
Chai Tulani was born in Nakuru, Kenya and raised in Chicago, IL. His first official mixtape “Visionz of Zion” was featured on the front page of datpiff.com in May of 2013. After gaining some attention from his first mixtape he began working on his second mixtape, “Cloud High Vybes”, which was released on April 19th, 2014. His launch of the mixtape had a great start. The “Cloud High Vybes” mixtape release party brought out an incredible crowd and received a number of great reviews of the tape.
