This week, we’re joined by Kristine Cherek—former big law associate, general counsel, partner at a regional firm, and law professor—who now uses her voice to advocate for gender equality in the workplace. With over 20 years of experience navigating the legal world, Kristine has seen it all—and she’s not afraid to talk about it.

In this episode, Kristine shares her journey through the many roles she’s held in the legal field and why, after decades of watching progress for women in law move at a glacial pace, she decided it was time to tread loudly. Now an author and advocate, Kristine brings real talk to the table about power structures, inequality, and how women in the profession can support one another while building fulfilling careers.

We also dive into her bestselling book, Tread Loudly: Call Out the Bullshit and Fight for Equality in the Workplace, a sharp, funny, and empowering memoir that blends candid stories with hard-earned wisdom for the next generation of women lawyers.

So, whether you passed (CONGRATS) or didn't pass the bar exam, this episode is for you. As two multiple attempt bar exam survivors, we have some sound advice for those of you that may have gotten some not-so-great news lately.

So, what do you do if you don't pass? Here is where to start:

  1. Perspective is Key: Understand that failing the bar exam does not define your worth as a future lawyer. It's a challenging test, and many successful lawyers have faced setbacks along the way. Recognize that the exam is just one step in your journey to becoming a lawyer, and it does not reflect your intelligence or capability.

  2. Resilience is Vital: Developing resilience is crucial for aspiring lawyers facing the bar exam. If you don't pass on your first attempt, use it as an opportunity to strengthen your resolve and dedication. Learn from any mistakes, seek support from peers and mentors, and commit to a diligent study plan for your next attempt. Remember, many successful lawyers have faced setbacks before ultimately succeeding.

  3. Focus on Growth: Instead of dwelling on the disappointment of failure, focus on how you can grow from the experience. Analyze your performance, identify areas for improvement, and adjust your study strategies accordingly. Use the setback as motivation to work even harder and approach the exam with renewed determination. Each attempt is a chance to learn and grow as a future lawyer, bringing you closer to your goal of passing the bar exam.

Sidley is the law firm that former First Lady Michelle and Barack Obama met at. Working in the legal field where minorities represent less than 5%, Imani has created a nonprofit organization and scholarship program (The Bridging the Gap Scholarship) to advocate and assist more minorities to get into Big Law careers.

The Bridging the Gap Scholarship is sponsored by four minority law students seeking to ‘bridge the gap’ between minorities and corporate ‘big law.’ In a field where most scholarships reward those interested in seeking public-interest law careers, this scholarship presents a unique approach to social change by seeking to encourage upward social mobility for minorities and access to resources to pay it forward.

The ladies ordered their dresses from Rent the Runway and their dates ordered their tuxes from The Black Tux -- we totally recommend these services for your next formal event!

Fun Fact: Did you know that when you graduate law school you are a lawyer, and when you pass the bar exam you are an attorney.

This week the ladies chat with Jolene Blackbourn. LA born and bred, she currently lives and practices in southern California with her two kids and two dogs. Jolene is a Southwestern Law School grad. Follow her on Instagram HERE

If you had a ‘bad’ undergrad or rusty transitional period in college and your GPA suffered, don’t fret! Law School is still possible, list to what Jolene said in her addendum.

Need a "warm-up" before law school? YES, yes you do! Trust us! Try THIS 1L 'masterclass' course (Angela Vorpahl’s program discussed on this episode)

Jolene graduated in 2002, meaning she started 3L right before 9-11 happened. Because of 9-11, MANY of firms were just gone (because so many firms were in the twin towers) and the LA branches of the firms were in disarray and thus making the job hunt SUPER competitive. AND to add on top of it, the Federal Government went on 5 years hiring freeze … NOW WHAT??!?!???!

So last semester of law school she ook Wills and Trust in Spring of 3L… and ended up LOVING in and getting the highest grade … maybe this was for her!! #Estate planning

After graduation, for about 3 years she worked part-time (at an estate planning firm), opened up her own firm (because she was getting some referrals) as well as tutored students for the SAT. Then due to financial reasons, she decided to join Workers Compensation. Jolene ultimately rocked the work and stayed in that sector for 15 years. Now she is back in estate planning and enjoying the slower speed of transactional work. We can't forget our personal favorite part of the work she now does, working with pre-law students -- Check out her BOOK HERE

The book shares tips on how you can save money in college for law school as well as tips for what classes to take in law school and so much more! Schedule a chat with Jolene HERE

This week’s episode the ladies chat with Julie Cromer Young. She went to undergrad at the University of Alabama and got her degree in diplomacy. After undergrad, Julie went to law school at Harvard law (YES just like Elle Woods!) She talks about how law school is law school. But in retrospect, she realizes how many great opportunities there were and how intellectually stimulating it truly was.

Julie shares some of her biggest struggles and accomplishments while at Harvard. For instance, she is the first lawyer in her family, she went straight through from undergrad to law school, and while in law school she realized she didn’t care for the subject that got her there. Her biggest tip, get context to how the law works. If you have the ability to take a year or two off before law school, then do it! #thelawdoesnotexistinavoid

Julie’s TOP tip for current law students, PAY ATTENTION TO LEGAL WRITING! She talks about how important legal writing is in the field and how understanding the structure is the key to success as a lawyer.

Julie’s first job out of law school was at K&L Gates where she started as a 2L. While there she tried to dabble in as many areas as she could to try and figure out what type of law interested her. Julie was offered a post-bar position and described the tasks she worked on in the litigation department.

She ended up falling in love with trademark and IP work, and at the very same time, the internet came into what we know it as today! Ultimately Julie worked at 4 different law firms after she decided IP law was for her, but after leaving the 3rd firm, she began to realize that she wanted something with more of an immediate impact. Que the idea of becoming a law professor!

Julie attended an AALS course that covered becoming a law professor, step-by-step. She says being a law school professor can be nerve-racking, but her feet tingle when she is in the classroom. Julie was a civil procedure teacher when she first started. Julie now works for Bryce Legal as a Legal Career Coach and Résumé Writer, so please reach out to her HERE if you want to chat with her more about anything we discussed today!

Julie was also kind enough to explain to us what “Big Law” means to most people, while the term big law can mean something different to people based on where they live in the US. When trying to decide if a firm you are looking at falls into the big law category, look HERE at the AmLaw 100 list to see if it’s on there. If not, look at how many lawyers work at the firm, how much money does the firm makes a year, and how many locations does the firm have.

Alexa is a double Bruin and graduated from UCLA law in 2014! But before law school, she interned at a law firm in downtown LA where she experienced litigation and transactional work. She quickly knew transactional law was where she wanted to be.

Nicole graduated from NYU undergrad and started her career as a teacher. After realizing teaching was not for her she decided to go to law school. Nicole graduated from Penn law and after a successful OCI, she went into big law.

But their stories are soooo much more than that! Listen and hear how their law school experiences were at TOP law schools!

After law school, both women worked the law firm life and share all the tea about what it is like working at 'the firm'. The big takeaway: do more on the self-care front, from the beginning!!

After 3 years working at law firms the women ended up in house! Alexa at Amazon Studios and Nicole at CBS. After Nicole moved across the country to California she started at Amazon Studios. Alexa actually sold her on the job! Que them becoming best friends! The ladies then share what it is like working for a studio and the different roles it takes to get jobs done! Lauren Boyd is an attorney in Phoenix, Arizona. However, she never knew she would become an attorney!!

She is a graduate of the University of Arizona, with a degree in Finance and Business. In the process of getting that degree, she was exposed to “mock legal counsel” via the law school’s 3rd-year law students. She realized law school could be a beautiful blend of all the things she loved.

She shares that the community was different in law school. While she went to the same law school as she did undergrad, not many of her fellow business students went to law school. She says she isolated herself in a sense and treated it like a job. Leaving school at school and life outside of that building was still similar to undergrad.

While she knew litigation was not for her she kept her eye on the business side of the law. Including bankruptcy and estates. She also made it full circle and was able to advise the business students as a 3L!

Lauren is a transactional lawyer and gives ALL the insights into what you should do in law school to get you prepared. Also if you are not in law school yet, these are the types of courses you should look for at different law school programs.

Lauren got an in-house counsel job right out of law school from an internship she had in her third year. She says she got the job by showing she was committed to the vision of the company, she was open and willing to move back to Phoenix. Don’t believe that you can’t get the in-house job right after graduation. No one is going to go get those opportunities for you, so go out and get your own job opportunities.

Her 1st in-house job was with a Fortune 100 company (Based on rankings from Fortune magazine's Fortune 500 list, the Fortune 100 are the 100 largest public and private companies in the United States based on revenues. The Fortune 100 are a subset of the Fortune 500) she says it was a love-hate relationship because at such a large company there was not the most updated corporate culture.

After a great stint at the company and knowing she wanted to be a mom, she decided going out on her own was a great move for her! Lauren now owns her own boutique law firm that DOES NOT work on Fridays, check it out HERE.

Listen to Lauren’s first interview with the ladies HERE

This episode is all about MONEY. From how to negotiate a salary, what an average salary starts at in different fields, and sources you can read and listen to in order to learn more about #money

The ladies talk salaries from law firms (Boutique means 3-10 lawyers) to big law to the public interest to take a bonus with a lower salary. Lauren discusses feeling worthy to make good money! Don’t let where you go to school effect how much money you think you should make!

Lauren shares her favorite sources to educate herself about Money. Purchase them HERE

  1. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki
  2. Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin
  3. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
  4. The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason
  5. The Millionaire Woman Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley
  6. The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collin’s
  7. Financial Freedom by Grant Sabatier

Then the ladies and Lauren dive into debt. The dreaded word and what so many of us take out in order to go to law school. She tells the ladies DON’T put the blinders on! Get comfortable with your debt. Maybe print it out and put it on your mirror!

A few main takeaways: Pay yourself first, try to invest in an index fund or robin hood.

In your first year of practice focus on being a good lawyer and as you get good at being a lawyer you can focus on bigger investments like property etc.

On this week's episode, the ladies chat about internships in law school.

But before they dive in on that topic, Samantha shares how she stopped drinking coffee for a year, what she learned about herself! She had her 1st cup of coffee in a year, at her internship, so it felt appropriate to share!

Then Samantha shares her internship story. From how she got it to why she is still there. She says at first she was scared to ask questions, but as she became more comfortable at the office she realized she had to ask questions to learn!

Samantha’s tip for working at the firm: If you have an opportunity to talk to one of the lawyers at your dream firm, DO IT! Don’t be scared to put yourself out there because that is how you get confidence.

Then Haylie shares her story from her most recent internship. She found the job listed on simplicity and applied immediately. At the interview, she knew she had found a great firm to learn about employment law, so when they offered the job to her on the spot she thought it was fate.

Haylie loves working and especially in employment law, so it was hard for her to see the problems she was having. When she started full-time during the summer, she realized it was hard for her to feel comfortable asking questions because she felt like she had to impress people. Because of that many times, she felt lost and alone. She wishes she would have asked for more feedback, but because she doesn’t want to live with regrets, she says remember that for your next job!

Never forget that there are jobs outside of the law and as Haylie and Samantha move towards their first job out of law school, they have realized that there is not just one path. So keep your mind open!!

On this week's episode, the ladies chat with the "Soulicitor" Ms. Charlene Gisele. First, she shares her story of how she wanted to be a lawyer since she was a little girl. Watching her father in the business world she was driven to do more than just your average student. Charlene went to high school in the states, but after learning she would have to go to four years before starting law school she decided to attend law school in the UK.

Charlene attended Christ College at Cambridge University where Charles Darwin attended, and not only got her English law degree but also her French law degree equivalent at Cambridge.

After graduation, she started working at one of THE BIGGEST law firms in the world, but sadly after about 5 years in Charlene started feeling severely burnt out. She knew something had to change!

Leaving everything she had worked for behind, she retrained and qualified as a Primal Health Coach and Corporate Wellness Consultant. She now advises founders and partners from some of the world’s top law firms, CEOs, and corporate executives on how they can optimize their health and wellbeing using a combination of ancestral principles and new-age biohacking techniques to keep stress and burnout at bay.

On this week's episode, the ladies chat with Dana Shaker a lawyer who works in Policy, certified yoga teacher, and entrepreneur. In 2020, Dana started her own yoga and wellness business designed specifically for lawyers, law students, and professionals, now called Journey and Practice LLC.

Dana attended Scripps College in California and through her studies and experiences she knew law school was a way to chase her dreams! Food law is what actually drove her towards her law school choice, Georgetown Law. During law school, managed to stay within the food law program and was even an editor on the Food Law journal.

Her top tip for current law students: PRIORITIZE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS!!!

After a bit of a struggle and not passing the bar exam two times, Dana was let go from her firm in California and had what she calls her quarter-life crisis where she realized she had to prove to herself that she was worthy. After taking the bar exam, she passed the Washington, D.C. Bar. While you might think she would have ended up D.C. surprise surprise she ended up back in California doing policy work.

As you can tell Dana understands the particular stressors lawyers (and law students) face, so Dana’s goal is to empower her clients to navigate challenging life circumstances by discovering, embracing, and acting on their inner wisdom—which oftentimes means stepping away from one’s mind and learning instead from one’s physical body and emotions!

She offers a variety of yoga and wellness services, including a unique Bar Exam Yoga and Wellness Program for exam takers, something that is near and dear to her heart.

Before law school Yohanna worked as a paralegal at Squire Patton Boggs for 4 years for before attending law school. During law school Yohanna continued to work at the law firm. In total she worked there 9 years before becoming an attorney.

She shares that tax law was her biggest struggle and one of her biggest accomplishments was working full-time and completing law school successfully. Her biggest tip for the current law student is, WAIT FOR IT .... actually do your readings! Haha DUHHHH!!

Yohanna is here to talk about the Bar exam. She equates the bar exam to the Olympics – Law school to a marathon and Undergrad a 5K. She shares her experience taking the bar exam for 1st time. She took a bar prep course. Followed it to a t. Worked at the firm like she did in law school. Sadly, she didn’t pass. She knew at that point she HAD to do things differently.

Yohanna changes her mindset. She knew she was NOT going to pass the bar with the 200 multiple choice question. But rather with the writing parts of the Bar Exam. Find out what she did differently by listening to the rest of the episode.

Yohanna has a soft spot for struggling bar exam takers because she failed the bar exam before going on to conquer it in 3 states (Texas, Florida, and Maryland). Now she is on a mission to help struggling bar exam takers make the necessary changes to finally pass the bar exam, start doing the work they love, and make a living as licensed attorneys!

In this week's episode, the ladies talk with Guest Angela Vorpahl about all things "Big Law." From what it means, how to get there in law school and what its like working there after graduation.

To intro the episode the ladies talk about what it feels like to actually "take a break" and how it can be hard to turn your motor off! But what you've all been waiting for, an interview with a former "Big Law" associate turned law school coach. MAN, does she have great advice! She talks about her journey to law school and what it was like for her to go to law school at SMU. The ladies chat with her about all things from interviewing to pre-law jobs and scholarships, we even talk about the dreaded on-campus interviews (OCI). Angela also shares what she wishes she would have known before going to law school and sheds light on some of the differences between the work in law school vs. the real world. She shares her secrets to a good interview answer by explaining the "Broad-Narrow-Broad" approach to the question of "what kind of law do you want to practice?" Angela explains the transition from Big Law to another career in the law and quoted the book "Lean In" by saying "Your career is a jungle gym, not a ladder." SO TRUE. So take a listen and we hope you get as much out of this episode as we did!

In this week's episode, the ladies chat about work life balance, time management and mental health. They advise all pre-law students to develop proper time management. The ladies even admit that they have a hard time delegating task, asking for help and saying NO to all the things!

The ladies talk about how important it is to truly relax, take a break, be self aware and not compare yourself to others. All golden rules, but everyone in law school need this reminder at some point. In the ladies opinion, self awareness is one of the most important things you need to develop as you become a young lawyer.

Ways you can #selfcare: Cooking (its healthier for you too), working out, take a bubble bath, listen to a new podcast, get a massage or mediate.

Try using the Calm App to help you sleep or mediate. OR you can watch True Crime before bed like Samantha (hahaha). Also, you can check out Laura Cleary's videos about her brain scan here.

The ladies talk briefly discuss mental health: depression and anxiety in law school and the legal field. Stress can have a huge impact on people. The ladies want to remind everyone that if you are feeling alone, there is someone who is there for you. A few resources you can look into are: Lifeline, Trevor Project, Crisis Text Line, and Talkspace. Also check out both of these sites to help find someone to talk to in person as well -- APA and Find a Psychiatrist

Also, The ladies love using notability for notes and recommend getting a scanner app to help in the law school & legal process. Technology can be so great #savetheenviroment but also such a headache #zoomschooloflaw

Then the ladies dive into questions from a few listeners. Starting with a professor asking you to “discuss it like a lawyer” and how being told “you love to argue” as a kid can almost be the same thing. Then the question shifts to how law school can feel like high school and a reminder to treat others as you want to be treated! The legal community is small so be kind to everyone and never forget #communicationiskey

Lastly the ladies take part in a fun experiment suggested by a listener. Looking up “should you got to law school” and “is law school like undergrad” and debunking any crazy myths they read.

Welcome back to another Ladies Who Law School Podcast episode! This week's episode is going to be pretty different than the rest of the content that we are planning on creating for you guys. Today we wanted to focus more on the context behind our lives in law school. We focused on key terminology that will be helpful if you are applying to law school, or a recently admitted student getting ready for next fall! This info is to help everyone better understand our journey, and allow you to conceptualize the topics that we are discussing during the podcast. We couldn't include every single thing, but we included the stuff that we thought would help the most. We have a blog post on our website that follows along with episode touching on each of the topics we talked including definitions, links, and more. Thank you so much for all of the support you've shown so far! Please, don't hesitate to contact us about topics you you'd like to hear our take on. See you next week!
