Unfolding Words
Unfolding Words is a weekly Bible Study-focused podcast. You will hear biblical truth taught in context and with the text's background in mind to gain a fuller understanding--all in 30 minutes or less. This unfolding helps you to see just how beautiful the Bible is. The result: light for your Christian walk and life for your soul. The podcast name is based on Psalm 119:130: "The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple." | New episodes every Monday.
God has already promised He would dwell among His people. His presence is the best promise and it reassures us.
If we grieve the Holy Spirit and shut the door on the promise of His presence, then we miss out on His presence and the blessing He brings.
How often we seek God’s hand for blessing instead of for God’s face in order to see God Himself? God is to be our main pursuit. The way into the fullness of blessing is not by seeking blessing, but by seeking God.

There are so many voices telling us how to live. What’s right. What’s wrong. And much of it opposed what the Bible mandates as right or wrong. They are trying to take gender off of birth certificates.
Isaiah 5:20-21
Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
and shrewd in their own sight!
It’s the world that says that evil is good and good is evil. Sin causes moral confusion and the inability to discern good from evil. When we reject God’s standards, we exalt our personal standards, which merely reflect our sinful values. God has a standard for good and we need to take heed to it.

God has built rest into our biological makeup. We have to sleep. We have to stop and rest our bodies and minds.
God modeled rest for us during creation. God rested after He created the world implying that His creative work is complete and He now rules over it. He didn’t design us to strive all the time. Rest is a divine gift from God.

It's so easy to read the story of the golden calf in the Old Testament and think the Israelites were so ridiculous for worshipping a statue. Given the culture of that time, it made perfect sense to them. Looking at the story in context and in the culture of the Ancient Near East, you'll see how easy it is to erect idols--and how ridiculous your own idols are today.

There's a dangerous theology creeping up in Christianity where people proclaim that they love Jesus without the church.
You can’t love Jesus and hate the church.
According to Scripture, the church is the bride of Christ . When we talk down about the church, we are referring to Jesus’s bride. We cannot think for one moment that Jesus is okay with Christians making disparaging remarks about the bride of Christ that He gave His very life for.

Living water in jars of clay—that’s essentially what wells are when mentioned in the Bible. Jesus is the living water that flows out of believers who are walking wells in this earth. The stone that Jacob rolled off of the mouth of the well foreshadows the rolling away of the great stone from Jesus’ tomb. But this stone will never have to be put back over the well again. Living water flows into eternity for both Jew and Gentile.Every human soul has thirst—not a physical thirst.

God promised the children of Israel a land flowing with milk and honey as they wandered in the wilderness for decades. And just as they were on the cusp of crossing over into it, a group rose up and asked to stay in nearby cities east of the Jordan because the land was beneficial for their flocks. Instead of moving into their Promised Land, they opted for ease and peace in the border land. What they saw was enough for them rather than the unknown goodness that God had assured. In this episode, we'll look at how opting for easy can point to the fact that you are serving a safe God you created.

As the people of Jericho were shut in, it describes not only a physical defense, but it also represents a resistance to the plans of God.
Comfort can create a place that you don’t want to leave. A place that closes you off to the new that God wants to do. In America we live in a land of plenty, a land of comfort. If our comfortable circumstances change, our comfort level changes. Don’t depend on your walls of comfort and ease—especially when the discomfort of life kicks in.

The word "unity" conjures up images of a utopian world. In a perfect world, unity would reign among nations, people groups, marriages, and in relationships. Sadly, the world we live in is a broken world full of broken relationships. Since the fall, every human has lived in broken relationships with others and God. But God’s aim for us has always been unity—both with Him and with each other. So how are we to strive for unity when we are used to focusing on our selves? God provided a model for us that is both both good and pleasant for us.

What an exciting moment in Israel's history the return to Jerusalem after exile must have been. The Israelite nation endured seventy long years in captivity, and then in the blink of an eye, God turned things around. They could hardly believe it. It was too good to be true—except it was. God is in the restoration business and we need to believe this for our lives as well.

As servants of Jesus, we are all on a pilgrimage. The idea of pilgrimage paints the picture of traveling upon a path that is marked out and set before us to make an upward journey. We must learn to open God’s book—the Bible. God has spoken so our aim is to try to understand what God has said. The more we study the Word, the more freely the light comes. “The unfolding of your words gives light” means that God’s Word gives light, but also that this light grows increasingly with our understanding of the Word. As you allow God’s Word into your heart through studying and meditating on it, your heart is flooded with light. This mirrors what Paul said in Ephesians 1:17-18, “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.”

The book of Judges tells us everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Right is the same word for judge—to make straight. Every single person determined what “right” was. This led to anarchy.
This is a dangerous, lawless time marked by moral in decline. At the beginning of the period there is no clear leader to follow Joshua, and by the end there is no leader at all.
The book of Judges includes some of the worst stories of the Bible and closes with these sad words: ‘In those days there was no king in Israel; all the people did what was right in their own eyes’ (Judges 21:25).

Ahmaud Arbery was murdered by two men who followed him in a pick-up truck. They were not arrested for two months. The first thing we do when witness a gross injustice like this is look to God and ask: why aren’t you doing anything God? A lot of these times God gets the blame for what humans do apart from Him.
God can intervene, but we are promised a perfect city in heaven—not on earth.
Imagine how God must feel watching his creation do horrible things with the free will He’s given them. It's been like this since the days of Adam and Eve. We haven’t handled that free will responsibly.

Notice that deception is always used against a person who is acting as an enemy of God—seemingly getting in the way of God’s plan.
Most of the women who used deception in the Bible either worked to protect the lineage of God’s chosen people—specifically the coming Messiah or they were part of Jesus’ lineage. The enemy who deceived Eve—who was to carry the royal messianic seed—ended being tripped up by women who worked to keep the royal seed alive. Deception isn’t sanctioned—except when it deals with an enemy of God.

The times we are living in now with COVID-19, being quarantined and so many deaths and unknowns, fear is a constant. It’s similar to what the disciples faced after Jesus' death. With Jesus gone, they faced unknowns and fear—locked behind doors. But Jesus came to them with a promise of peace.

The Day of Atonement was the only time during the year when the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies in the innermost chamber of the Temple (or Tabernacle) to make atonement for the sins of all Israel. On this day, the high priest would remove his official priestly garments, which were very ornate in exchange for a linen garment. Jesus brings this day fully to life with His resurrection and makes this truth personal for your life.

Pharaoh ordered two midwives to kill Israelite baby boys. But they defied government order. What these women did was unseen and unknown at the time. But God blessed them beyond measure and used them in a big way.
Many times we think it’s the spotlight, the stage, the well-known name that has the biggest impact. Yet it’s often the woman who is quietly doing the work of the Lord behind the scenes who is most esteemed. She is the one blessed with legacy and a name that doesn’t fade away.

God used a pagan king's heart to do the work of rallying the people to rebuild God's temple. Maybe you’ve been praying for God to stir up change through someone who YOU think can make change. Perhaps God has someone altogether different in mind. God used His creative power to make something in His image and it was good.
In chapter 11 with the Tower of Babel, man uses his creative power to make something to promote his image.
Their aim was to build for themselves a city and tower with its top in the heavens and to make a name for themselves. A main part of their goal was to stop themselves from being dispersed. God didn’t call man to put down roots in one place and build towers. He called them to be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth.

In this re-creation of the world, Noah is a new Adam (see Genesis 9:2-4). And we see again that it doesn’t take long for sin to rear its ugly head.
The re-creation (replenishment) of the earth continues with God commanding Noah like he did with Adam, to be fruitful and multiply and a reaffirmation of man’s dominion over animals but not the earth.
The words, "and subdue it, which were included in the command to Adam in Genesis 1:28, are left out here with Noah because the world dominion originally assigned to man in Adam had been forfeited by sin. World dominion will only be restored through Jesus Christ the woman's seed
In this new creation, Noah exceeds Adam as he is given kingly authority.

Interesting how chapter 8 is the chapter of new beginnings and the number 8 symbolizes new beginnings.
Noah has been in the ark for months and perhaps felt forgotten because he didn't know how long he’d be in the ark.
The Hebrew text uses the word zakar, which means "to remember." In English to "remember" means to mentally recall an event or action, but in the Bible, and especially in reference to God, "to remember" points to the commitment to act upon a previous covenant obligation. God’s remembering proves His faithfulness.
God showed that He remembered Noah by causing the waters to decrease and creating a whole new world for him and his family.

Genesis 7:1 "Then the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation."
With this command God extends an invitation, offers perfect provision and provides protection in the midst of sin and judgment.
There is no in-between. You either accept the invitation or you don’t. You’re either IN the ark or OUT. Noah is invited because he lived in stark contrast to the world around him. Remember, the imaginations of man were ONLY evil CONTINUALLY.
Noah’s righteousness wasn’t based on his goodness but on his faith in God.

By saying Noah found God’s grace, it does not mean that he was searching for it and then stumbled upon it. He found God’s grace because God’s eyes were fixated upon him. Noah was not an apostate or one who turned away from God. Instead, it was by the grace of God that he was chosen for the special task of boat building.
We are all like Noah: saved by grace through faith.

Instead of skipping over the genealogy lists, take the time and carefully take in the names and glean details that will aid in better understanding of the book of Genesis overall. This week, we will uncover some gems in the genealogy list. The narratives and the genealogical lists, which are sandwiched between the narratives, vary in length. It’s easy to ignore the lists or consider them to be transitions in the text. Genealogy lists are just as important as the narratives. The author of Genesis has a specific reason for including the lists. The men named in the lists have a role in shaping the context of the narrative, displacing God's promise of the preservation of the "promised seed" and pointing to the coming Messiah.

Sin always crouches down seeming smaller than it really is. But when that thang (yes, thang!) raises up, it’s way bigger and harder to tame than you first imagined. Don’t be deceived. Sin is a killer.
We all have a choice today. Between good and bad. Between living as a thorn bush or a tree of righteousness planted by the rivers. The choice is determined by our actions and response to God. Will we accept the good gift of grace that He’s offered through Jesus and that He offers daily through new mercies.
Every day we are making choices—to live for God or ourselves. Choose wisely.

Most know Genesis 3 because it chronicles the fall of man. But it also contains some other very important truths. Namely that God desired to clothe Adam and Eve in robes of kingly authority. Adam and Eve needed the knowledge of good and evil to rule. But they decided on their own, instead of God providing it when they needed it.
This is reminder to us that being part of God's kingdom is about patience and surrender rather than dominance and seizing authority before you're ready for it.

God made this world for man to live and flourish. Everything had a divine purpose, which made God declaration it “very good.” The Garden was a place where Adam could walk in purpose and commune with his Creator.
But the icing on the cake was another gift—the Sabbath. Sabbath is a gift from God. It shows His generosity towards us.
God created a need for Sabbath rest deep within us at creation, which is why it’s so important. We were designed to need this reset in our week — not just our bodies, but our spiritual health as well. When we honor the Sabbath, we declare our faith in God. We say once a week, “I trust You.”

God’s love is evident in His careful and deliberate act of creation. He took seven days to establish a pattern for us and show His carefulness and attention to detail in creation.
His Spirit hovering over creation is a picture of a bird over the nest keeping an eye on the new creation that's about to burst forth. We see gentleness, provision, great care in handling His creation.

"But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts." Malachi 4:2-3 (ESV)
We can leap because of what the Lord has done and is doing in our lives. For those who fear His name, we have every reason to be joyful, to be unrestrained in our excitement for what He has done for us, to worship Him and enjoy His presence forever.
Maybe this past year, you felt constrained by your trials and troubles. But you can rejoice in anticipation knowing that soon you will leap like calves from the stall.

God does keep His promises, even when we fail to recognize it. He said, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6). Jesus fulfilled these precious promises from God. In Him, God has proven His faithfulness to Israel and to all the world.
This season we celebrate the miracle of Hanukkah as well as the miracle of Christ’s birth. Because God keeps His promises, He will save and keep all those who call upon His name through faith in Immanuel, our Messiah Jesus.

Consider the fact that Noah preached for more than 100 years while building the ark, but no one besides his family was converted. What does this say about what we often view as successful ministry versus faithfulness to God?
So Noah built this ark and looks like his act of faith didn’t draw crowds. But we can’t determine Noah’s success based on our culture’s definition of success. Humans are poor judges of success and failure because use the wrong measuring sticks. For us success equals the rich, the powerful, the influential, and the attractive. But these successes don’t hold the same weight in God’s kingdom. On the other hand, we often determine on failure to equal—the poor, the broken, and the unimportant people. These are often the ones God calls blessed.
According to Jesus, it is possible to gain the whole world—to reach success according to the world’s standard—and still fail at life because you lose your soul in the process. At the same time, Jesus declares that it is possible to lose all your possessions, relationships, and status, and yet succeed in what really matters—in your relationship with God.

Have you ever faced a predicament and wondered how God was going to resolve it? Or even if He was going to resolve it? It can be so easy to want to know what God is up to when we can’t trace His hand.
In 2 Kings 6:24–7:20, the city of Samaria, Israel’s political capital, is under siege, and food supplies have run so short that things that are unthinkable to us were sold as food at a premium price. Things became so bad that the people inside the city even began to eat their own children.
Elisha announced that the Lord would deliver them overnight and that by the next day, they would find themselves with an abundance of food. However, even with this good news, the king’s officer doubted that such a thing could happen. He was a skeptic and scoffer, and could not wrap his mind around the possibility that God was able to something so big in such a short span of time.
God is about to open up the windows of heaven and pour out His blessings on them and He is going to do it in a very unusual way through very surprising people.

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need. (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12)
In our social media driven world, it’s hard to imagine how this verse fits into our culture today…and why anyone would even want to live a quiet life. The Bible has a lot to say about quiet living. But many people are attracted to flashier subjects like: how to get more followers, how to get your message heard, how to stand out or how God will make your wildest dreams come true.
In that phrase "make it your ambition to lead a quiet life", Paul used the two verb forms in almost a contradictory manner. Make it your ambition (from philotimeomai) means to be zealous and strive eagerly, even to consider it an honor, whereas lead a quiet life (from hesuchazo) means to be silent, not speaking out inappropriately, remaining at rest and tranquil. As Christians, a hallmark of our lives should be that we lead peaceful lives, don’t stir up conflict and hostility toward others, which all points to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.
Our culture runs counter to Paul’s command to live a quiet life. Worldly ambition excludes quietness and prompts to constant quests for greatness. The apostle's admonition really means, "be ambitious not to be ambitious."

What is written in the Scriptures? How do you understand them?" Luke 10:26
It’s the same question Jesus is asking you today. How are you to interpret the Bible, and to do so correctly? It isn't as complex as some think. In fact, much of it boils down to common sense and a basic understanding that the Bible is a written document whose forms of expression is similar to other works of literature. When you’re in a predicament, or when you have to draw a line in the sand, instead of asking, “What would Jesus do?” and taking your best guess, ask instead, “What do the Scriptures say?” The same question posed by Jesus. After all, that is what Jesus would say if you asked Him what He would do.
Scripture is our sole authority today. It is referred to as the living Word of God and 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
Jesus likely asked this question in Mark 8:17 out of frustration. In verse 12, the Pharisees argued with him asking for a sign. They were arguing WITH the sign. And He sighed deeply in His spirit. This is a glimpse into Jesus' heart. He came for them to understand. But they didn't. Instead, they seek for a sign when they had such abundant evidence already.
No matter what they saw Him do, His disciples still didn’t get it. Jesus had just fed four thousand people with seven loaves of bread and a few fish. And Prior to that, he had fed another 5,000 with just five loaves of bread and two fish, healed a deaf and mute man, cast a demon out of a young girl just by saying the words, and walked on water in front of them while they watched from a storm-tossed boat. What more did they need to see to understand that He was the Son of God?
The disciples took things at face value, missing Jesus' meaning. Today, you and I need to take the time to listen deeply.

In Matthew 8:26, Jesus asked His followers why they were so afraid their boat would overturn on account of some wind and waves, especially since He was right there in the boat with them. Certainly, if theSon of God was in their midst, they would safely get to the other side of the lake.
If they had really understood who He was, they would have understood that no boat that carried Him would be allowed to sink. He was safe in His Father’s hands. By extension, they should have understood they were safe with Him, for they were His chosen followers. This would later give them assurance in the future that they were in God’s hands.
Then having initially rebuked the disciples, He rebuked the winds and the sea. By the power of His word the storm was stilled. And immediately there was a great calm, indeed such a sudden calm after a storm that it was beyond the experience of even these hardened fishermen. In that moment they knew that they had seen the Master of wind and wave at work. And they were filled with awe.
Just like the disciples, you and I have Jesus with us in every circumstance we encounter. And, He has promised to never leave us or desert us. So, what are we so afraid of?

Do you want to be healed?
The verse in John highlights your need to know yourself. When it comes to your illnesses (sickness, mental, spiritual, relational), do you honestly want to be healed? Or have you become so comfortable in what affliction you are facing that it’s become tied to your identity. This is prime time for you to believe God can do the impossible. Maybe it’s time we not only ask Him, but we ask Him to change our hearts to desire the healing. Whatever that healing may look like.
Maybe you’ve never considered that you’ve become comfortable in our afflictions (whatever form they take in our life). How many “illnesses” have you accepted as the norm because that’s just he way it’s been. Have you accepted the sickness of unforgiveness because you were wronged? Then you need to pick up your mat. Have you accepted the illnesses of slave to your temptations? Maybe you need to pick up your mat.
There are many healings you may need, but first you need to look at your heart and see if the desire is there first? And if it’s not, that’s where you start. Ask Jesus to change your heart to desire the healing you need most. Then pick up your mat and walk it out.

I'm starting a series on the questions of Jesus. The first one we will be looking at is from Matthew 9:28: "When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”
Jesus was asking more than whether they believed in the power He had just shown in other people’s situations, or even that whether they believed in theory that he was the Messiah. He was asking whether they believed that He had power to do this…right now…for them.
Sometimes it can be easy to believe the theory of who Jesus is, but it can often be harder to believe that He wants to work in your life and in your situation.
This is the kind of faith Jesus is looking for though, and it is the kind of faith the blind men display. It is one thing to believe in theory abut another to walk this belief out practically—yet this is exactly what Jesus is seeking.

Although our worship of God is no longer limited to the Temple Mount, we still can fall prey to the temptation to climb the high places—to follow the true God by climbing the wrong hill.
There are “high places” in our personal lives that must come down if we are to please God. We must continually be transforming ungodly beliefs and behaviors that contradict God’s Word. We must determine to climb up to the high places and destroy them. And whatever is lifted up against the knowledge of the true God we must identify and replace, no matter how comfortable we are with it or how long it has been around.
Questions to ask to determine where your high places exist:

Do I aim to become like Jesus Christ or like my Christian culture?

Do I give God my all or do I just give what’s necessary to keep up appearances?
-
Do my Bible reading, prayer, and other spiritual disciplines serve to draw me to Him—or are they convince me (and others) that I’m spiritual?

When tellers or retail workers learn about counterfeits, they don’t study fake bills. Instead, they study real ones. Fake ones can change every day. But the real government-issued ones set the standard. The same for us who walk with God. We can’t study every false teaching, doctrine, minister or person. We have to go to the source—the Scriptures in order to know what is right and what is wrong. Elisabeth Elliot, the late speaker and teacher, said “The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can't really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture.”

It’s in God’s nature to show hospitality. In fact, Genesis 1 is an example of His stellar hospitality skills. Evening turns to morning, and as each new day begins, God makes preparation for His special guests. After He completes a task, He makes a declaration: "It is good."
But the Fall estranges man from God and the relationship is no longer the same. Even though man rejects Him, God relentlessly works throughout the next centuries to restore and bring mankind back into an unbroken communion with Him. He finds a willing few, like Abraham, to whom he extends the invitation of being a friend of God and the promise that this friendship will be a blessing to all nations. And today, He is still extending Himself in hospitality as a model for us today.

When Abraham and his family reentered Canaan after making a choice to briefly enter Egypt, they returned with great wealth—livestock, silver and gold. They came to the region around Bethel and there a bit of a conflict broke out between the herders of Abraham and those of his nephew Lot. Abraham was faced with a choice regarding the limitations of the land. God tells Abram to look North, South, East and West, and everything he sees will be his.
While Lot chose the city—he was also choosing boundaries. He was bound in physically by the gates of the city and also spiritually by the sinful restrictions of that city. Sin always looks like freedom at first—but if you know the story of Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah, it’s anything but.
Abraham let God choose for him and there were no bounds on His provision—it was wherever his feet could take him. This week my pastor taught on the phrase “much more” and how that’s what God wants to give us. This is clearly evident that this is the nature of God. He wants to give us much more than our eye can see.

Growing up, we used to sing the gospel song Traveling Shoes. As a kid, I never understand the need for shoes if you were traveling to heaven. But clearly, I was missing the larger point. When you look at the scriptures, it’s clear that shoes are needed—spiritually and physically because God calls us to be pilgrims as wanderers in this world. Not just because we are on our way to heaven but because he has a goal for us down here—and that’s to spread His glory. And you can’t do that if you are standing still.

Kim Cash Tate is one my favorite people. We are really kindred spirits—both with a love for God’s Word and teaching the scriptures. We met about a decade ago over Twitter and built up a friendship and later started a group on Periscope called Perisisters In Christ where we encouraged women in the Word.
On this episode, Kim and I talk about the importance of studying God’s Word, how she developed a love for the scriptures and how surrendering her life—and her dreams to God led to a grand adventure that she’s now walking out after much prayer and patience.

Daniel and his friends are examples of godly Jews in contrast to the Jewish nation as a whole. God judged the northern kingdom of Israel, followed by the southern kingdom for defiling themselves with the worship and practices of their heathen neighbors. Daniel and his friends kept themselves from defilement even in the midst of a heathen land, when death was possible for refusing the king’s provisions They were human vessels who remained pure and they provide great examples of how you can protect your position in God's kingdom today.

Kesha Griffin knows first-hand the power that the Word of God has to heal emotional wounds. For years, she unknowingly carried the burden of unforgiveness and bitterness brought on by abandonment and sexual abuse. But it was while studying the Word that the Lord highlighted her need to face what she had buried—or what she thought she had buried.

Kelli Brownlee is an anointed worship leader, who ministers the Word in song. A wife and mother, she is the Worship Director at Allison Park Church – Mt. Nebo campus. This week, I chat with Kelli about the importance of not only corporate worship, but personal worship. She also shares great insight on the role of the Word of God in worship and how to develop worship in your personal quiet time.
A former backup singer for gospel acts such as The Clark Sisters, Deitrick Haddon and Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Kelli talks about how good singing is not the goal in worship, rather it’s an extension of a relationship one has with God. “We look at worship on Sundays as if that’s what worship is—but that’s not really what worship is. Worship is our devotion and our decision to follow God. And because we’re in relationship with Him, we show Him affection,” she explains.

In celebration of the one year anniversary of Unfolding Words, I have invited on a number of my favorite people from the internet who teach the Bible and are involved in theology matters. My first guest is Lisa Fields. I stumbled upon her podcast more than a year ago and have been a fan ever since. Her work with the Jude 3 Project is inspiring. Her goal is to help the Black Christian community learn why they believe and what they believe.
Lisa and I chatted about how, despite growing up a pastor’s kids, she faced a faith crisis in college. This led her to dedicating her time to helping other’s learn how to defend their faith.

The book of Ruth is great example the kindness of God. Most think of Ruth getting Boaz, but the book is about so much more.
Kindness is a big deal to God and should be to us too. Kindness transcends language barriers, race, age, religious beliefs and economic status. Kindness is something anyone and everyone can do. And to witness it in action is such a beautiful thing because true kindness seeks nothing in return. Are you paving a way for God to show you kindness through the kindness you extend?
God used a Moabite woman (an outsider to the covenant) to bring forth the line of David (and eventually Jesus) all because she walked in kindness. Listen in to see how important this trait is for you.

Friendship with God scripturally is grounded in intimacy—not acquaintanceship. Missionary Jim Elliot “Not what another knows of me measures his friendship, but what he has shared with me.”
To be God’s friend is more than knowing about Him. Friends enjoy each other’s company. Friendship is close, personal knowledge. It is one thing for God to teach us which path to take—this is a blessing. But it’s another for Him to reveal Himself to us. For God to make us his friends seems unimagineable.
Those who fear the Lord are granted into to the intimacy of friendship with Him; are permitted to come into His presence, and to partake of His counsels; are allowed free access to Him; or fellowship with Him.

The Day of Atonement was the only time during the year when the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies in the innermost chamber of the Temple (or Tabernacle) to make atonement for the sins of all Israel. On this day, the high priest would remove his official priestly garments, which were very ornate in exchange for a linen garment. Jesus brings this day fully to life with His resurrection and makes this truth personal for your life.

We live in an age when the lost art of listening to God’s Word is an epidemic. 1 Timothy 4:13 says, "Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching." In this verse, Paul is instructing a young preacher named Timothy in the ways that he can keep his congregation engaged. The importance of preaching and teaching are easy enough to understand, but what about the public reading of Scripture?

In our lives, we have this tendency to create tour own personal Tower of Babels. When we do that, we reveal the rebellion that existed thousands of years ago in the hearts of those who erected the first Tower of Babel.
We get a new job and build our success up without thinking about the glory of God. We build up our bank accounts, our retirement plans, our houses, our names, our resume, our reputation--with our eye on success but not on God. Instead of settling down roots and building up a name for ourselves, how about setting down roots in God and spreading out with the gospel by living as salt and light in the world.

Christ has called you to be a “royal priesthood” where your role is to join Him in reigning and guarding God’s glory and honor. Like the Levites, Christians have been scattered to proclaim God’s Word and guard His worship.
The Levites were not just priests—they were soldier-priests. Their priestly origin is based in righteous violence. But God put the violent nature of the Levites to good use. Not only would the priests slaughter animals on a regular basis for sacrifice—using their “swords” for God, but also all the Levites would guard the tabernacle/temple and the cities of refuge. Yahweh ordained and scattered the Levites throughout Israel in order to guard His worship.

While we would like to be the hero in God's triumphal parade, truth is we are former enemies of Christ. In the Roman triumph, some of the captives would be let go—given a chance to live. While others were put to death. This is a strong imagery—we are given new life in Christ while at the same time dying to self and on our way to death. Captives, whose lives are being used to spread forth the beautiful aroma of Christ wherever we go. Like Paul, God continually leads us to death in a triumphal procession and in this way everywhere reveals the knowledge of him.

Salt is a preservative that works only when it penetrates into food, and becomes useless when contaminated by other chemical substances. It must remain pure to do its job. In the same way, Christ followers must influence society while keeping themselves from being influenced by sin in the world.
Similarly, light cuts through darkness. To know the truth and fail to stand for it, Jesus says, is as senseless as lighting a lamp and putting it under a basket. In other words, we don’t just live out our faith inside the walls of our churches and of our homes. We’re not to be of the world, but we’re to be in the world. We’re citizens of an earthly kingdom as well as a heavenly one.

When Moses established the 12 tribes of Israel, God set apart one tribe, the Levites. They were set apart (or made holy) to focus one job—to serve Him. The Lord God Himself was the allotment given to the tribe of Levi. As the priestly arm of Israel, God promised to provide for them rather than have them work the land for themselves.
God set the Levites apart in a second way. Unlike the other tribes, they had no physical allotment of the Promised Land. So they had no place to set down roots and call their own. Seems unfair. However, it was truly a gift. Being set apart allowed the Levites to focus on their call to serve the One True God and His people and worrying about tending to land or conquering enemies. The Lord, not land, was their inheritance. (Numbers 18:20) That was enough. They lived by faith in God’s promised blessing to be their share and their portion.

Deuteronomy 31:8 The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.
God’s heart for us is that of a good father who doesn’t just send us out without first carving a path. Not only is He always ahead of us carving out a path we are to travel on, but He is there to walk with us as we walk on the path.
God assures us there is no reason to be afraid or discouraged because He’s not going to abandon us. He has everything under control and all that is going to happen will happen under His watchful eye.

Jesus chose to deliver a great object lesson to His disciples at Caesarea Philippi about HIs identity and their role in response to His identity. In that pagan setting, He encouraged His disciples to build a church that would overcome the worst evils.
The fact that Peter’s confession about Jesus identity occurred in a pagan area is remarkable enough. But when one learns the history of the area and the traditions associated with it, Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Christ the Son of God takes on greater significance. This confession is declared in the darkest place possible. Jesus asked His disciples who they thought He was, and the light of God shone on the gate of Hades through Peter’s confession.
So who are YOU saying the Jesus is? Is he just someone to pray to for success and prosperity? Is He a good guy to model ourselves after or is He the Messiah. If you truly believer this, then you have to start living like He is and proclaiming this truth clear and loud with words and behavior.

As followers of Jesus, living peaceably with all people should be a hallmark of our lives. Never let yourself be the reason for an un-peaceful relationship with another person. As a believer, you should be known by living peaceably in the neighborhood, in your city, on your job, and show yourself to be pleasant. When people speak of you, one of the things they should say about you is that you are a person of peace. Listen to this episode, to learn how to live in peace with others and walk in the example Jesus Christ left.

Rest assured that if God hears what is happening in an Egyptian servant girl’s world, He hears what is going on in your lives. He hears the things that cut to your very heart – the things which feel as though they are gripping your heart and ripping it out – He hears them. He hears the things which are said against you that are totally unfair and nothing but lies – He hears them. He hears the words that are said to hurt you, He hears the words spoken when bad news is delivered to you, He hears your words uttered through tears and those screamed in anger. Because He hears, we are not alone. Like Hagar God opens our eyes to Him. Then He opens our eyes to His care and His provision.

The desire for self-promotion is part of the evil condition of the human heart. We are all tempted to exalt ourselves in some way—if it’s not through social media, it’s some other way. But social media has a special way of encouraging and showcasing one’s indulgence in this temptation. Of course, social media is not the cause of self-promotion; it is only the platform through which the human heart displays its desires. But the prevalence of such self-promotion should urge us to think more about the issue, especially because so many Christians seem to be walking in step with a trend the Bible so clearly discourages.

—from the desire to be praised, honored, glorified, preferred, consulted, or approved. Deliver me, Jesus, from the fear of being humiliated, criticized, forgotten, ridiculed, maltreated, and from the fear of what others will think. O Jesus, give me the grace to desire: that others would be loved and esteemed ahead of me, that in the eyes of the world they would increase while I decrease, and praised while I pass by unnoticed; that others would be preferred in all situations; that others would become more than myself—in order that I would be as holy as You want me to be.

The last miracle that Jesus performed before His triumphal entry into Jerusalem was restoring sight to a blind man named Bartimaeus. This is such a symbolic miracle based on the timing.
Although he as blind, Bartimaeus knew something up was up by the movement and sounds of the crowd. So much so that he asked what was going on. When He discovered that Jesus was going to pass by—He took advantage of that small window. But He didn’t ask for the obvious—sight. Instead, He asked for mercy.
Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus for mercy, calling Him “Son of David”. This shows extraordinary messianic insight on Bartimaeus’ part because “Son of David” is a title for the Messiah and Jesus has not been openly sharing His messianic identity (see 8:27–30)—
Bartimaeus’ request for the restoration of his sight also shows his amazing understanding of what the Messiah is supposed to do. Bartimaeus understands Jesus as the promised Son of David who comes to restore all things, even his lost eyesight.
The formerly-blind man’s first action after being healed is to follow Jesus. This means he was now a disciple and joins Jesus' group. The word translated "followed" is akoloutheo, which means "to follow someone as a disciple, accompany."
Bartimaeus is such an encouragement for us today as we seek God in prayer.

Storms are an inevitable part of life. If we pay attention, they can teach us valuable lessons about God and life. Acts 27 is a chapter that provides great insights on how to navigate storms.
When Paul and his companions were in the thick of the storm verse 20 says: “When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.”
Hopelessness came on them as they had to sail blind—on the open sea. With no navigational tools on the open seas, their only means of getting their bearings was the sun and stars. But even those hadn’t appeared for may days.
Has anybody been there? Tossed about by the storms of life with nothing to help you navigate. You feel weak and eventually helpless. The passengers on the ship had thrown the cargo and tackle overboard to lighten the load. But it appears they’d thrown their hope away with it as well.
Paul’s attitude about the storm provides so many teachable moments for believers.
In life, contrary winds are par for the course. When Paul, the prisoners, and sailors set out for sea, little did they know what would befall them. But in the middle of that storm, they had one word from God to hold on to.

Psalm 65 paints a picture of the earth and our lives being blessed with the bounty and glory of God. As we set out into 2019, may God encircle your year with His presence and crown it.
God crowning the year has a meaning that points to how God can make a year which was naturally prosperous even more abundant. In Old Testament days, the harvest was the plainest display of the divine bounty of God. A full and plentiful harvest is the crown of the year, and by extension, the unmerited goodness of God is seen. Today we can look at our lives as the harvest. The Lord himself orchestrates the coronation and sets the golden crown upon the dawn of the year.

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things”. Jesus repeats Martha’s name as a gentle rebuke. He points out her distraction rather than her hospitality. Certainly, he was appreciative of her heart to serve, but at the time discipleship was of more importance. He is on the road to Jerusalem and the cross, and this is one of his final visits in Luke’s Gospel to the home of these dear friends. Martha and Mary need Jesus because He will soon depart from them, and Martha’s busyness distances her from him.
In contrast, Mary chose the good portion”. The better part that Mary chose was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening—being a disciple. There will be time later for serving and doing. First, the disciple must learn from the master—otherwise, the disciple’s busyness would lead them to miss crucial teachings from Jesus.
Sounds familiar in your life? Our schedules are jam-packed. We, too, are troubled and distracted. We, too, need to choose the better part—to sit at the master’s feet—to listen and learn from Him and His word. Busyness without sitting at Jesus’ feet first will not further His kingdom.

You are gifted for God’s glory. Use every single gift He’s given us—whether it’s in a small and seemingly unseen arena like your home or on a larger platform. The issue isn’t how big the audience is your gift (because God is the biggest audience there is) the issue is whether or not you value what God has placed in you enough to cultivate it and max it out.
I'm sure you're familiar with the story of Moses in Egypt when He went before Pharaoh. He was worried about Pharaoh not taking heed to what he had to say. But God assured Him he was already equipped with the gifts He needed to go before the royal leader. Exodus 4:1-3 says: Then Moses said, "What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say? For they may say, 'The LORD has not appeared to you.'" The LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" And he said, "A staff." Then He said, "Throw it on the ground." So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it.
Often the very thing we consider common, uninteresting or "just that thing I've always done" is the very thing God uses for His glory. God took Moses' ordinary staff which he probably used in his days of shepherding behind the mountain and transformed it into a vehicle for a miracle. And He can do the same with that gift that you think is no big deal.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is esteemed for her faith in hearing the word that she would carry the promised Messiah. But also consider that she was carrying the Word which was from the beginning in her womb as mentioned in John 1. Given this, it seems natural that she would accept God’s word concerning her with faith. For her to carry Jesus she had to first accept the written word.
Mary’s faith was already rich and full by her response: let it be to me according to your word. Even her cousin Elisabeth praises her faith in God’s word. Mary was blessed because she believed there would be a fulfillment of the word spoken to her. Mary’s trust in the word didn’t start at the moment the angel came to her. Instead, she had years of storing up the word, trusting it, letting it richly dwell in her. Her song of praise, known as The Magnificat in Luke 1:46-55, is a testament of her trust and dwelling in the scriptures.

It's easy to get exasperated and overwhelmed with the daily routines. Mounds of laundry. The piles of dirty dishes. The discipline that has to be doled out daily. But God never designed it to be this way.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24 ESV)
When offered up to God, even the everyday tasks can be holy.
Mopping the floors is ministry? Sounds ludicrous. And it felt especially ludicrous to me as I mopped floors this weekend only to find them dirtied by three sets of little feet this week. But bless God those little feet who can dirty and who are still here alive and breathing. That I get to provide a clean, stable and loving home for them is an honor. An honor that many women want, but can't have.
Every act of service is counted worthy in God's eye. This small shift in perspective has changed my grumbling into holy wonder. God sees every little act of service and sacrifice I do and He honors it.

We often hear much talk about free will. But God is relentless in His pursuit of us even though we have the free will to turn down His persistent chasing. The whole Bible is the story of how God is seeking out His people to return to Him. That’s the heart of the gospel—God going after sinful people. We are constantly hiding and running from a loving God. Many people define religion as man’s search for God. However, the Bible paints a beautiful portrait of God’s search for man. The mystery of it all is that God pursues man! When Adam and Eve hid from His presence, the Lord called, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9).
It’s our sin that makes us hide.
There’s a poem by Francis Thompson called the The Hound of Heaven that so beautifully depicts this truth. In The Hound of Heaven, Thompson runs from God in order to maintain the pleasures of his riotous living.
What God banished Adam and Eve from, He wanted to replace what was taken with Himself. God is pursuing us with the same intent. His purpose in HIs pursuit is so that we find in Him our soul's desire.

God brought Jacob and his family to the land of Goshen. This is where the children of Israel flourished. It’s also where they experienced hard times and eventually slavery. God was letting them know-this is not your home. This is not the place I have ordained for you.
A place that was once a blessing for you may be drying up and becoming difficult. Might it be that God is moving you on to a place where He wants you set apart for a specific purpose?

Luke 8:1-3 tell us Joanna was the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward. We read that she herself received healing from Jesus. As a result, Joanna “provided for them out of [her] own resources” (Lk. 8:3). ‘Provided’ translates the Greek diakoneo. It has been commented that the word “refers almost exclusively to the menial labour of women and slaves, performed for the people of higher rank on whom they were economically dependent”. This woman of high reputation, took it upon herself to support the ministry of Jesus by serving as a servant would.
Women like Joanna supporting Jesus’ ministry was key because Jesus and the disciples had practical needs that had to be tended too. Joann's gratitude was shown in a tangible and practical way. How much more should you serve God with what you have?

Every one of us is like a fruit tree in the garden of God, and God is expecting fruit from our lives. That is why we are here. He puts us here for a purpose, since everything on earth is here for a purpose. What is the purpose God has for you and me? It is to produce fruit.
I love the metaphor of tree and a believer. You are not a reed moved about by every wind which blows, nor a creeping ivy or plant that grows along the ground. A tree is upright, and grows heavenward. This tree is planted instead of one that grows wild. A planted tree is under the care and cultivation of its owner. The metaphor reminds us that those who delight in God's Law are owned by God, cared for and pruned by Him.
Remember, as you look around God’s orchard at other trees that different fruits have different ripening requirements. Some produce we can collect on in earlier years, other fruit don't come to full term until we are older adults. The key is to stay next to the rivers of water. When one harvest comes in seed needs to be set aside for the next wave. Don't fear crop failure. Farmers optimists by nature. So too with God, and we should be also. We have God's promise – “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest... winter and summer... shall not cease."

The initial launch of Abraham’s journey into the Promised Land was not promising. There was fierce competition for the land (Gen. 12:6), and Abraham spent a long time trying to find a place to occupy (Gen. 12:8-9). Rocky economic conditions forced him take his family to Egypt, hundreds of miles away from the land of God’s promise (Gen. 12:10). Talk about a road trip gone bad.
Many people of his stature probably would have headed back. When Abraham left his home in Haran and set out for the land of Canaan, his family was probably already quite large by modern standards. We know that his wife Sarah and his nephew Lot came with him, but so did an unspecified number of people and possessions (Gen. 12:5). Soon Abraham would become very wealthy, having acquired servants and livestock as well as silver and gold (Gen. 12:16; 13:2). He received people and animals from Pharaoh during his stay in Egypt, (outside of the land of promise) and the precious metals would have been the result of commercial transactions, indicating the Lord as the ultimate one to bestow blessing.
When you look at the promise, the problems are clear
God called Abram to a land that was
- Inhabited
- Famine struck
- Unable to support he and Lot
- War torn.
Even is all this, Abraham did not forsake God or walk away from His promise—which mainly looked like a problem from the get-go. God’s blessing often operate opposite to how we would expect. It is given to the most unlikely recipients and it advances though human opposition is strong.

As soon as Jesus came down from delivering the Sermon on the Mount, He encounter a leper. In the Sermon on the Mount (chs. 5–7), Jesus teaches about the kingdom of heaven; now He begins to demonstrate it through powerful deeds.
In the Old Testament, God was not to be touched or handled—think of the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, which represented His presence. Leviticus was all about being clean to even be in His presence. But in he New Testament. Jesus goes out into the world touching all manner of uncleanness and cleansing it and healing it.
Easton’s Bible dictionary says: Leprosy was “the outward and visible sign of the innermost spiritual corruption; a meet emblem in its small beginnings, its gradual spread, its internal disfigurement, its dissolution little by little of the whole body, of that which corrupts, degrades, and defiles man’s inner nature, and renders him unmeet to enter the presence of a pure and holy God”
In the Old Testament, a high priest who touched a leper would have been unclean and unfit for temple service— a serious penalty. Touching someone with leprosy should have made Jesus—a high priest unfit for service. But instead, He turns that rule upside down. He touches the leperous man who knelt before Him.
With one act, Jesus broke the law (and fulfilled it).
Like the leper, we are polluted by sin, but the presence and work of God cleanses all that. We don’t have to bring ourselves clean to Him, He does that for us. The miracle happened when that leper stepped out in faith and knelt in worship before Jesus. His act of worship ignited Jesus’ willingness to take away His unclean state.

While reading through the book of Leviticus, what struck me is that the Israelites had to always be aware of their state of purity or impurity. Anything could turn their otherwise clean state into an unclean one, like touching a dead animal, giving birth, or something as simple as a skin rash. It was always Israel’s responsibility to ensure that they returned back to a state where they could approach God.
In Leviticus 10:10-11, God says to Aaron, “You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean, and you are to teach the people of Israel the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them by Moses.”
It was the priest’s duty to teach the people what was considered holy and what wasn’t. Today, it seems this is a lost art. Political correctness has trampled over any talk of holy living. And the “I’m going to do me” mantra rules even in churches today.
Leviticus 10:10: “And that you may make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean,”
God is holy, and nothing that comes short of that holiness is to be permitted into His presence. Nothing ritually unclean must enter the Sanctuary and its precincts, for it will defile it. So it was the responsibility of the priests to make the distinction and see that it was observed.
Today, we are to be responsible for making sure that we are in a state of holiness as we appear before God.

It’s easy to let circumstances dictate your identity and direction.
Like Mephibosheth, the grandson of King Saul and son of Jonathan, we are all sinners have been wounded, crippled, because of the fall of Adam and Eve in Garden of Eden. Like Mephibosheth, you are crippled—it may be a crippled heart, while he had crippled legs. Maybe your lameness comes in the form of a sin that trips you up, worry, anxiety, a failed relationship, trouble with finances, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and the list goes on. It’s easy to flee when you fear punishment just like Mephibosheth fled to LoDebar with his nurses help in fear of death. Like Mephibosheth, you may fear returning to where you belong--the palace where King Jesus lives.
Mephibosheth was off in LoDebar—in hiding—in fear of being murdered following the battles that took his father’s life and led to his grandfather’s taking his own life. LoDebar means “no pasture,” “no word,” “no communication.” Mephibosheth sought refuge in a barren land.
So too, it is with us. We try to hide from God—to our own LoDebars where the pasture is non-existent and we are not fed. Where we are not daily in the Word of God. Where we don’t pray and seek communion with Christ.
But God calls us out to reconfirm our identity and highlight our royal status.

God promised the children of Israel a land flowing with milk and honey as they wandered in the wilderness for decades. And just as they were on the cusp of crossing over into it, a group rose up and asked to stay in nearby cities east of the Jordan because the land was beneficial for their flocks. Instead of moving into their Promised Land, they opted for ease and peace in the border land. What they saw was enough for them rather than the unknown goodness that God had assured. In this episode, we'll look at how opting for easy can point to the fact that you are serving a safe God you created.

"He was moved with compassion." This is said of Christ Jesus several times in the New Testament. It is expressive of the deepest emotion; a yearning of the innermost nature with pity. Theologian Benjamin Warfield’s book is called “The Person and Work of Christ” There is a chapter in that book entitled, “The Emotional Life of Our Lord.” He tried to synthesize the biblical passages that spoke of the emotions of our Lord Jesus. He stated, “His whole life was a mission of mercy...His entire ministry is summed up as going around the land and ‘doing good.’” The word that best summarizes Jesus our Lord is no doubt the word “compassion.” It is the emotion most frequently attributed to Him. Do you ever think of God as having feelings for you? If not, why not? If so, which feelings do you tend to attribute to God? Do you believe that God is “filled with love and compassion” for you? If you really believed this, how might it impact your relationship with God? How might it impact your relationships with others? The scriptures give us example of how God feels love and compassion for each and every one of you.

The Bible is a historical, factual book, but, above all else, it is a book about God and who He is. We can't possibly fathom all that God is, so we come in knowing that there will always be more to learn about the Bible and God....always. We will never exhaust its knowledge. Keep in mind that there are 11 categories of culture that need to be taken into consideration when reading the Bible. They are: political * religious * economic * legal * agricultural * architectural* clothing * domestic * geographical * military * social. The Bible was written in the framework of another time. So though its spiritual significance is timeless, it was written within the boundaries of culture and should be read with that in mind. Inductive study uses investigative tools to gather information about the Bible: Observation (taking in all the facts about the text taking into consideration its context), Interpretation (figuring out what the text is saying & keeping in mind there is only one correct interpretation), Application (lessons for your life). Faith is not a personal power you possess to create your own future. Faith is not a tool given by God to create your own reality and change your world. It’s not a magic wand that you wave at your own will. God is sovereign. You are not. He’s in charge and He’s calling the shots. God gave you faith as a virtue to trust the future that He has promised. That future is clearly outlined in the Bible. When God gives faith, it is the assurance of things hoped for that He promises, not every little thing our hearts desire. When Paul wrote the phrase "faith is the substance of things hoped for," he was not really defining what faith is, but rather he is showing what faith does. Faith undergirds what we hope for. Faith is the very beginning of everything that really matters spiritually.

The Lord is able to reach down and rescue you from any sinking condition, but His mode of operation is that He usually sends human arms and hands and/or words and wisdom as a means of rescue. The prophet Jeremiah needed all four. They came from an unlikely source: Ebed-Melech an Ethiopian eunuch in the king’s house. God designed us with an appetite to sustain life in our bodies. Appetite and hunger are sometimes used interchangeably, yet they are not the same thing. You can have an appetite without being hungry. We can apply this principle to our spiritual lives. When our appetites are filled with things that have nothing to do with God, then we end up with no hunger for God. When we nibble at what society offers, it changes our appetite. Is what you are indulging in filling you up with no appetite for what God offers?

For thousands of years God’s people wrote the Bible out by hand. In the Old Testament, scribes were revered for their knowledge of Scripture developed through copying the Scripture. Today, we don’t need to write out the Bible thanks to technology, but the blessings and benefits of this discipline are worth taking the time explore. When God prepares a table in the presence of your enemies, He is not only providing spiritual nourishment and fellowship, but He’s using the table as a strategic battle tool. God is known for unconventional means to win battles, so why not an unconventional means to celebrate battle victories? Psalm 23 is an example of a victory dinner in the valley. God can use something as simple as dining as a military tactic. God shows the enemy that He has already granted success right there in the valley of the shadow of death for His children.

Mark 6:30-44 where Jesus feeds the 5,000 is more than just a miracle to wow the crowds. It is instead a picture of how Jesus is a very personal good shepherd, who has compassion and aims to provide good things. As Jesus and the disciples seek to find a quiet spot to rest and regroup, the crowd followed Jesus and the disciples into a desolate place. It is there in that desolate place that Mark paints a picture of Jesus with a flock of sheep in need of a shepherd. These sheep (the crowd) had wandered into a desolate place with no provision for food, but Jesus being the good shepherd that He is provided for them.

How many times have we not recognized Jesus? We don't recognize His provision because it didn't come in the manner we thought it would. We don't recognize His Word because it came from a person that we least expected. Sometimes we are face-to-face with our Savior, but we just don't recognize Him.

God did not design women to be and do everything that men do. Our roles are distinct and glorious. When you seek to operate outside of that which you are designed, you are sending the message that God didn’t know what he was doing when he created you woman. This trend towards blurring gender identity is further proof of how low people think of God because they say, “How I define gender sets the standard and not God.” And frankly, that’s a dangerous place to be because what you do is exalt yourself above God when you believe that what He created is not truth.
For all the good that the feminism has seemed to do, there’s even more damage that its done. Society will tell you that as a woman you run the world. “Positive" messages in songs and media seek to empower women by masculating them. Images of women standing strong against an all-male army, can easily send a message that devalues boys and men. Don’t get me wrong, women can and should fight for equal pay and a right to be heard politically but when the fight cuts across our roles that God designed for us to walk in or elevates women roles above a man—that’s when we need to draw a line in the sand.

When evil seems to be winning, we have to remember three things about God:
- God will bring redemption of out the enemy’s evil plans. God not only saves Joash, but uses Jehoshabeath to redeem the role of women. We also see that Jehosheba and Jehoiada together are agents of redemption for marriage. Redemption is one of the most beautiful themes in the Bible. God creates something good but it’s subverted for evil – then comes in again and redeems it, giving it back the purpose and goodness it was always meant to have. The throne in Judah was meant for the royal seed. Athaliah tries to taint it, but her plan backfires and she is destroyed.
- God will bring His promise/plan to pass. With God, life always arises out of death. With Joash hidden, God’s plan was quietly unfolding with the passage of each year. The ascension of Joash to the throne is evidence of God’s continued faithfulness to His promise made to David in I Samuel 7.
- God will bring justice according to His sovereignty/timing. The death of Athaliah shows that God sometimes metes out justice in temporal matters. We see this happen in both Old and New Testaments. However, God does this according to His own wisdom and for our good.

This episode marks the final in the three part series titled Grow Up. Patience is defined as the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. Children paint an accurate picture of how patience is developed. Patience is a virtue rarely seen in young children—even less so in infants. Most children are impatient—throwing tantrums when they can’t have their way. As they get older, most kids understand how to wait and why you have to wait. But when patience isn’t developed in kids, it often reveals itself in anger and temper outbursts in adults.
When it comes to your spiritual life, patience is something that should be evident—it’s a fruit that should be clearly seen.As mentioned earlier in this series, Adam and Eve were supposed to be patient and grow up in wisdom and understanding. Then, when they were strong enough and wise enough, God would let them eat of the Tree of Knowledge, and would invest them with authority. But their impatience landed them (and us) in a world of sin.
Abraham is a great study in how patience is matured as we walk with God. We are told to imitate him. Hebrews 6:12 tells us to be "imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises" and as for Abraham, we are told in Hebrews 6:15, "having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.”
Two Kingdoms of patience 1. Way of man: seizing before its time. 2. Way of God: faith, trust and patience. Communion with God, maturing to gain more authority.
Consider your level of patience, especially as it pertains to God’s plans unfolding in your life. Do you have the patience to wait a year for a prayer to be answered? Consider how you wait. Do you huff and puff as you wait? Your reaction is a picture of your maturity in God.

A mature believer’s life is marked by a consistent walk—not one that’s marked by fits and start. There should be consistency in your walk. Paul instructs us to "Let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ." (vs. 27, NKJV) In the Greek this phrase refers to giving equal weight. In other words our walk should be consistent with our talk. If we confess Jesus Christ as Lord, our walk should match our talk. There should be consistency in our home life and our spiritual life. There should be consistency in our work life and our spiritual life. There should be consistency in our leisure life and our spiritual life.

The Greek word translated “walk” is peripateō, which Strong’s Concordance defines as “figuratively to live, deport oneself, follow.”
