For eons of time, cloth has been used to communicate and convey messages
even before the written word. From birth till death, cloth is used to identify,
mark off, and make special, events that are markers in our lives.
The Meo, or Hmong women of Laos, and the Kuna Indians in
Panama, have an unusual relationship of technique from half way
around the globe. How could this have occurred without some
kind of transmission of technique or a migration from Asia to

Art is a process that gives meaning to the
processes of healing. In 2020, art can mean
giving a dying person the chance to hear the
voice of a loved one during Covid, or giving a word
or listening to a person who is dying. These are the
things that are significant within the speed of technology
and the tools of technology. Listening and caring for a
person, are the technologies of the spirit. We must give
them equal attention as technology commands our lives.
We need to create rituals that are relevant to
our western culture, and yet, we do not know how
to do this. Rituals weave the unseen to the known
world and we must learn how to create meaningful
and relevant rituals in order to move forward individually
and collectively.
Ritual is foreign to Western Culture, and yet, it is the
bridge between the visible and invisible worlds that we
long to know. In times of conflict, ritual can knit together
the fragments of pieces that keep us from a sense of wholeness
as humans.

In 1994, I travelled to Bali and Sulewesi, Indonesia. I was on a mission
to see cloth and ritual in Tana Toraja. The culture is rich in textiles and
celebrations that include cloth as the primary means of communication.
It is a land of sound and beauty and textiles.

particularly, people who are ill or in the passage of dying. Cloaks
may be made from pieces of cloth that bear meaning for the loved
one who is experiencing a defining moment in their lives. The conveyance
is through the cloth, which goes beneath words and sounds, and gives comfort
and love in a quiet and forgiving way.
