The move from Cov to Bath was like moving from the moon to mars, they were worlds apart from the lifestyle and mindset that I was used to….I’m happy to say I adjusted just fine to seeing world class sports facilities, having epic nights out in insanely cheap clubs and of course soaking up the culture in the stunning city of Bath.
This became my home, my playground and business ground for the next 4 years. Through a series of encounters I became good friends with two brothers who I would eventually be working for.
The businesses that we set up and ran were heavily focussed on student’s and their experiences. My role was to get sales and I did this by learning about marketing. We had a uni library with five floors so resources were good. The ventures required little capital and we were making sales from day one of launching.
To build email lists we sold student cards that, this allowed us to retarget them for our student themed nights, and then later on down the line we would eventually launch a student money making schemes in the form of bonus harvesting to fund our lifestyle, uni fees and most importantly, our nandos bill.
Facebook campaigns were all that we knew at the time and they converted really well even if we were amateurs at using them, we could still read the data.
By 2013 I had reached the end of university. I had enough experience to know that this sporadic entrepreneur route has its ups and downs and at that point I wanted a bit more stability so I pursued a career in consulting on the things I had been good at over the previous 4 years. However I had no money to be able to set up on my own and also, nobody knew who I was. I began as a technology recruitment consultant because I felt the most confident talking about sales messages and coding.
I swiftly began taking on my own clients because I gave them value in the form of free information products on how to gain more traffic. Now I have a job where I can continue to develop my marketing skills by selling people to people. Part of being a consultant is understanding the client's business so that I can inform them on how to save time, increase revenue, and maintain resources. This is so that you can find a near perfect match from the pool of talent. By highlighting the weaknesses within a company's sales funnel I was able to pick up additional roles to fill. My PDF would be labelled ‘how to maximise traffic using the big four platforms youtube, google, facebook and instagram’. I would email the PDF for free along with a 3-5 speculative CV’s so that I wasn’t just seen as another recruiter.
The PDF was written by me originally and perfected by an executive marketing assistant who I had later placed into work. With my candidates I would find more value in them helping me refine information products as a thank you for getting them a job. Testimonials are good but an irresistible offer to a new client is even better.

At 12 I had been excluded from school for being a rebellious little trouble maker, and it didn’t stop there because in year 10 I had got myself arrested Imagine that, getting arrested at 14 just as you are about to start your GCSE’s.
This experience was a sobering one and made me reevaluate who I am, my social boundaries and more importantly, what I don’t want to be. Off the back this experience I ditched all my friends at school and began to swim, a lot. I knew that I was interested in it and it gave me a sense of achievement when I trained. I was crap to start off with but knew that I didn’t want to go back to seeing a cell ever again. When I swam I would cover between 3km-5km per session.
By the time I reached 16 I had competed at the International Children’s Games, set a district record for the 800m Freestyle and qualified for the national champs in several events. Things were going well until that summer after nationals. I had gone to France with my Dad and my brother on a mountain biking holiday for two weeks.
The same bikes we rode to school on each day. I had built up so much confidence and attempted a not so small jump over a not so small shed. This thing was enormous, like 20 feet between take off and landing and I had tanked the run up, hit the kicker with so much momentum, speed and jumped over the shed, passed the landing spot and began nose diving from 20-25 ft in the air.
I knew this was gonna end bad so I threw my bike and braced for landing. I kicked the ground, tucked my head into my shoulder and squeezed so hard. My head hit the ground first and then my shoulder took the main impact and swelled up like a melon. I later had an xray after cycling down to the hospital only to find out that I had fractured my scapula. Game over for my swimming that year.
The journey to recovering from this took me to a dark place as I had gone from being physically and mentally stimulated to physical and mentally tortured. If there was a reset button I would have held onto the bike.
As time went on I got really good at coaching swimming, even with one arm. I had received my GCSE results and had failed all of them.
I enrolled at the local technology college to resit 5 GCSE’s and got an A in ICT + B’s in Maths, Science, English Lit and English Language because I had learned how to learn. Plus I had an intrinsic motivation to want to learn, the prospect of having a dead end job for the next 40 years was a real motivator.
In 2006 I took over a swim squad after 3 years of teaching swimming lessons to kids at the swim school. This was the perfect transition as I could get the same sense of achievement by watching my swimmers progress through the competition calendar and I successfully made a few good swimmers by the time I reached 19.
It’s now 2009 and I just got into uni.
