Welcome to the 38th Episode of The Two Tankers and a Cat Podcast! The very roots of the Neubaufahrzeug (literally: “New Construction Vehicle”) are connected to the arrival of Hitler as the new head of state, and the desire to have, as quickly as possible, a suitable heavy tank, both for the army needs and for propaganda purposes. It had to be a symbol of the renewal of the German Army and was conceived in quite a hurry. The Rheinmetall Grosstraktor was the result of this new tank for Germany. What goes into tankers nicknaming their tanks on the battlefield? We talk about painting the nicknames of tanks on the barrels, and the process of nicknaming tanks.

Welcome to the 37th Episode of The Two Tankers And a Cat Podcast! The mittlere Schützenpanzerwagen (Sd Kfz 251/1) was designed to transport Panzer-Grenadiere (armored infantry) into battle alongside tanks. Using a half-tracked vehicle, it was possible to drive in terrain where trucks could not go, while its armor offered some protection against small arms fire and scrapnel.
It was allowed for the mittlere Schützenpanzerwagen to attack with the Panzer-Grenadiere mounted, but did so at great risk. Anti-tank guns, mortars, artillery, hand grenades, fighter-bombers, etc. were all a serious risk for the lightly-armored, open-topped vehicles. Welcome to the 34th Episode of the Two Tankers and a Cat Podcast! Closely related to the SU-85, the SU-100 Soviet Union Tank Destroyer incorporated much of its design, revolving around the new D10 100 mm (3.94 in) antitank gun. The SU-100 arrived in operational units in October 1944 and immediately became popular with Russian crews. During the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba, The USS Houston, an American troop and supply vessel, was damaged by several FAR rockets and Castro himself shooting it from his command vehicle the SU-100, its captain then intentionally beached the ship on the western side of the bay. Welcome to the 32nd Episode of The Two Tankers And A Cat Podcast! Even before the Second World War, the famous German tank commander, Heinz Guderian, had predicted the need for highly mobile self-propelled anti-tank vehicles, later known as Panzerjäger or Jagdpanzer. Joseph R. Byrle is thought to be the only American soldier to have served with both the United States Army and the Soviet Red Army in World War II. He took part in Mission Albany, the airborne landings of the 101st Airborne Division on June 5-6, 1944, as a member of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was captured by the Germans and sent east as a prisoner of war. After several unsuccessful attempts, Beyrle escaped from the German Stalag III-C in January 1945 and joined a Soviet tank battalion under the command of Aleksandra Samusenko. Welcome to the 29th Episode of The Two Tankers and A Cat Podcast. We discuss the Soviet Union's need for an amphibious light tank during World War II. They designed the T-38, which you will find out during this podcast, didn't pan out very well. It did however lead to the development of the Soviet Union T-40, which was a more successful tank. The T-38 was involved in the Dnieper River crossing during World War II. As always, Charlie and I really enjoy talking about tanks, and this episode will not disappoint. We start off talking about the two man Ford 3 Ton Tank and how the French just wanted a few of them to use as a tractor. We end this episode talking about how technology may influence the future of tanks. The U.S. and Soviet Union are both working towards perfecting what we call drone tanks. Is this the future of tanking? We want to know what our listeners think about this topic! While the M6A2E1's design was rejected for use in combat, it was still important to the development of the T29 tank. Due to the use of existing unused T1E1s for a hull, they were able to have a tank ready that could test design choices for the upcoming T29 tank. When the tank was finished with turret design, it would find usage testing out the T5 105mm gun as well as gun mounting aspects with lessons learned from this being implemented in the T29 program. Remember you can always contact us with your questions, concerns or suggestions for future shows. Until next time, happy tanking and have a great week!

The Medium Tank M3/ Grant/ Lee was the first American medium tank to carry a 75mm gun, and played a significant part in the fighting in North Africa in 1942, but it was always seen as a interim design as its main gun was carried in the right of the hull, and it had been rushed into production to fill a gap before the arrival of the Medium Tank M4 Sherman.

Did you know that during World War II we had a branch of the military called the "Ghost Army"? Also, did you know that there was a comic book called "The Haunted Tank"? Many moons ago, my co-host Charley told me about how he used to read this comic book when he was a much younger kid! We will also delve into introducing the computer game that Charley and I both play, called "The World Of Tanks". If you ever want to platoon with us sometime in game, you can just message us through our Two Tankers and A Cat Facebook page. Happy Halloween folks, and remember to leave the trick or treating to the little kids!
