In this episode of Personally Speaking, Msgr. Jim Lisante is joined by Msgr. James Kelly. Msgr. Kelly is a priest from the Diocese of Brooklyn. Born in County Limerick, Ireland, he trained for the priesthood at the Irish College in Rome where he was ordained in 1960. That same year he arrived at St. Brigid’s Church in what is now Bushwick in Brooklyn, NY. In 1977 he was installed as pastor and spent nearly four decades transforming the parish with practical compassion. Msgr. Kelly recognized the growing legal needs of immigrants, who were mostly low-income residents, and he earned a law degree from St. John’s University in 1980. He went on to offer free legal counsel and assistance, particularly in immigration matters.

Twenty nine year old Detective McDonald was shot and paralyzed from the neck down in 1986 by a 15 year old teenager who was stealing a bike in Central Park. Despite his injuries, Detective McDonald went on to publicly forgive the teenager. Conor talks about his father’s life, his message of forgiveness, the Catholic faith that gave him the courage to forgive, and what that message means for all of us.

Cardinal Pell is the former Secretary of the Economy at the Vatican and he also served on Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinals. On March 13, 2019, Cardinal Pell began what was meant to be six years in jail for “historical sexual assault offenses”. He endured more than thirteen months in solitary confinement before the Australian High Court voted 7-0 to overturn his original convictions. Cardinal Pell relives his prison experience in his book, “Prison Journal” and the third and final volume of the journal he wrote while in prison has just been released, titled, “Prison Journal: Volume 3: The High Court Frees an Innocent Man.” In this final volume of Cardinal Pell’s journal he recounts being freed from jail after his conviction was overturned, the support he received from all over the world, and how he made the decision to forgive his accusers.

In this episode of Personally Speaking, Msgr. Jim Lisante is joined by Cardinal George Pell from Australia. Cardinal Pell is the former Secretary of the Economy at the Vatican and he also served on Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinals. On March 13, 2019, Cardinal Pell began what was meant to be six years in jail for “historical sexual assault offenses”. He endured more than thirteen months in solitary confinement before the Australian High Court voted 7-0 to overturn his original convictions. Cardinal Pell relives his prison experience in his book, “Prison Journal” and the third and final volume of the journal he wrote while in prison has just been released, titled, “Prison Journal: Volume 3: The High Court Frees an Innocent Man.” In this final volume of Cardinal Pell’s journal he recounts being freed from jail after his conviction was overturned, the support he received from all over the world, and how he made the decision to forgive his accusers.

Bishop Conley announced recently to his diocese “with great joy” he has returned from his medical leave of absence. In December, 2019, Bishop Conley took an 11 month medical leave of absence from his ministry. That month Bishop Conley was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, along with chronic insomnia and debilitating tinnitus. In announcing his leave of absence, Bishop Conley said he was sharing his information about his health in hopes of helping to lift the stigma associated with mental health issues and he speaks openly about this.
