In this episode of the Consulting Lifestyle Podcast, we're talking with Cesar Hasselmann, a consultant and entrepreneur who has built several businesses in Brazil and Australia. He's also the founder of AMH Consulting and he shares his insights on how to be a successful business owner.
Cesar was just 13 when he started his first business with a school friend. Within three years, he had a DJ business with three cars and six DJs hitting parties all weekend. It was short lived when his friend suddenly passed away. His other business fell apart due to an economic crisis in Brazil, leaving 120 employees without jobs. Cesar then moved to Australia to start another company from scratch.
To Cesar, business is a political game, and helping clients in a way that won't hurt them and will ultimately transform them for the better is part of being a successful consultant.

In this week's episode of the Consulting Lifestyle Podcast, we have Stefan Debois as a guest. Stefan is the CEO and Co-Founder of Pointerpro, a software company based in Belgium.
During his 14 years as a consultant, he learned that most professional services companies had quite good back-office processes. Delivering advice to clients is likely their most important process, but relatively few companies have used technology to automate it.
In 2012, Stefan created an iPad quiz for his daughter’s birthday. After the quiz was complete and contestants received their results, they also got pictures, videos, and fun trivia about their daughter.
Since then, Pointerpro has helped consultants and other expert advisors automate their advice delivery by converting the consultant's expertise into online assessments. These generate personalized reports.

This week on the Consulting Lifestyle Podcast, I'm going to be talking all about power play.
If you've ever been in a situation where you felt like you had a lot of power over somebody else, or if you've ever felt like you were being taken advantage of by someone who was much more powerful than you, you're probably familiar with this concept.
Power play happens in business relationships all the time but it can also happen between clients and consultants and even between employees and their managers. It's one of the biggest challenges for B2B consulting companies.
I will discuss the five types of power play in B2B consulting and its own set of characteristics, which I will break down in the episode.

Today, we'll be talking about the Offshore Delivery Model.
When it comes to implementing SAP, there are a lot of things to keep in mind.
One of those things is that you want to make sure that your implementation plan is comprehensive and holistic. But when it comes to implementing SAP, who does the implementation?
The offshore delivery model is a way of working that has been used for years by IT consultants. It involves working with offshore teams who have their own team structure, processes, and products.
If you're like most companies, your IT team is probably the one that implements your SAP solution. That's what they do best! But what happens when you need an international team to implement your solutions? Will there be any challenges?
That's why in this episode, we'll discuss how we use this model to implement SAP software in a way that works best for our clients. We'll also talk about some of the best practices when working with offshore teams.

Data Migration is one of the core services a technology consulting consultant can offer to its clients. The process of migrating data can be daunting to the uninitiated.
There are many reasons why an organization's data needs to be migrated. In this episode, we're dealing with a fictional technology consulting project and we'll talk about the importance of data migration, its influence on the success of a project, and what is like to have a data management career.
NOTE: The project context is usually fictive and the case is not necessarily realistic because I am doing it for a simple explanation but is proportionate to real-life data migration cases.

OK, this episode is a little bit controversial.
A LOT of consultants absolutely hate the hourly model and urge anyone to think hard before they take it.
Most consultants hate the hourly model. They don't like it, because it's purely based on how much you work and nothing else. Some consultants see this as a disadvantage, but there are also some positive sides to working with an hourly model that pays off in the end.
In this episode we will cover:
What it means to be an hourly consultant - 1:09
Reason 1 - 2:48
Reason 2 - 5:38
Reason 3 - 6:41
The Downside - 9:09
We're going to discuss possible downsides as well as upsides.
We'll also talk about why you might want to use an hourly model even if you don't think it's for you. So let's get started!

Consulting is one of the most challenging professions. It is challenging because, unlike in most other jobs, you are both a manager and worker. You need to make decisions where you might not be certain about the outcomes. Your consulting career relies on how well you know yourself, your pitfalls, and your opportunities.
In this episode, I will be discussing the six emotions consultants usually go through and how to use them to their advantage. These emotions are as follows:
NOW - You feel a lot of emotions when you’re a consultant. Who wouldn’t, after all? If you don’t learn how to channel them, though, they can make you feel down and cause you to miss out on opportunities.
Take control of your emotions and get ahead with the tips that I will mention in the podcast.

It’s vacation season once again! And in this episode, I will be talking about five books that I highly suggest for you to read. I believe that this set of books will help you gain new perspectives about life— the plans that you set out for yourself and the simplest, most important, things in life that people need to reflect on. I’ll be stating the important points of each book as we go through this episode:
1.The Top Five Regrets of the Dying by Bronnie Ware – this book is written by a nurse in the intensive care unit and observed the five most recurring regrets people have on their deathbed. -- shorturl.at/hqAJS
2.The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle – a spiritual and profound book that talks about the presence and the essence of knowing one’s purpose.
-- shorturl.at/lvBR6
3.The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller – a book that focuses on one question: “What is the one thing I can do such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” It will also delve into how multitasking as a lie is being sensationalized and accepted as a skill. -- shorturl.at/lozI4
4.Atomic Habits by James Clear – focuses on a four-step model for human behavioral framework in breaking away from bad habits and creating good ones. -- shorturl.at/hmpKR
5.Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High by Kerry Patterson, Al Switzler, Joseph Grenny & Ron McMillan – this views crucial conversations as a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. -- shorturl.at/wMNV8

This is a crucial but necessary conversation to have in these special times.
Georges Floyd was murdered on the 25th of May 2020.
The next day, there were protests in the United States and then all over the world.
We have seen companies using hashtags and starting special initiatives.
But what should a consultant, a solopreneur, a small business owner do?
And how should she/he do it?
This is the topic of the wonderful panel I have had with Ravi Toor, Dwight Best and Michael Zipursky.
Their contribution to the topic has been tremendous.
