New developments are unfolding surrounding the disappearance of Elizabeth “Beth” Capaldi, the Bucks County woman who went missing two months ago.
On Thursday, Capaldi’s husband, Stephen, was taken into custody for questioning in relation to his wife’s disappearance, law enforcement sources familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly told The Inquirer. By Friday, the sources said, he led investigators through the Hog Island area, near the Philadelphia International Airport — about an hour from the couple’s Sellersville home.
CBS Philadelphia reported that law enforcement agencies could be seen in that wooded area, following a man in an orange prison jumpsuit. Human remains were found in the area but have not been identified yet, the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Saturday. An autopsy was pending. Public records show Capaldi is being held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility. State records did not show any pending charges for Capaldi as of Saturday.
Who is Beth Capaldi?Beth Capaldi, 55, is a mother and wife who lived in Sellersville. She and her husband have one daughter. She worked from home and was not known to travel outside of the area by herself, officials with the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said. She mainly stayed in or around the house, unless running an errand with a family member. Her social media presence shows she enjoyed arts and crafts, including knitting and drawing.
The DA’s Office describes her as 5-foot-6 with brown and gray hair and hazel eyes. Photos provided by the office and from her Instagram account showed she often wore thick-rimmed glasses and kept her silver curls down or up in a knot.
Capaldi’s disappearance rocked a quiet neighborhoodIn front of the Capaldi brick home on East Church and High Streets in the quiet Sellersville area, neighbors and community members lit candles Friday — it was at least the third vigil since her disappearance. Detectives dressed in white jumpsuits could be seen behind police tape removing items from the property, including a white car.
Since she was first reported missing to authorities in October, members of the community have rallied to locate her. They organized neighborhood search parties. “Missing” fliers with her photo and description could still be seen stapled to nearby light posts. A local pizza shop taped those fliers to their pizza boxes. On social media, nearly 2,000 people gathered in a Facebook group dedicated to posting updates on the search.
When did Beth Capaldi go missing?According to the District Attorney’s Office, she was first reported missing on Oct. 12 by her daughter, who said she hadn’t heard from her mother, which wasn’t normal. Stephen Capaldi said he last saw his wife at home two days earlier.
While her wallet was missing from her home, most of her personal belongings were left behind.
“She vanished without taking her cell phone, her car keys, her car — which is pretty extraordinary,” Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub said during a news conference in October. “It’s been my experience that people don’t go missing unless they intend to go missing, there was a horrific accident, or there was some terrible foul play.”
Body camera footage in shooting that killed woman, injured officer. Nashville, Tennessee — Metro Police released body-cam and dash-cam footage of a deadly shootout Friday morning involving a Metro officer and a woman. Just after 9:30 a.m., field training officer Josh Baker from the East Precinct, was patrolling in the area of Brick Church Pike near the intersection of Ewing Drive when he spotted a black 2015 Chevrolet Camaro. Officer Baker was aware that the registered owner of the Camaro, convicted felon Demond Buchanan, had six outstanding drug warrants, charging five felonies and one misdemeanor, that were issued last month for possession of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy, Xanax and crack cocaine. Officer Baker radioed to check on the airborne status of a police helicopter, believing that the driver of the Camaro might try to flee. The camaro stopped in the parking lot of the Dollar General store. Officer Baker found that it was being driven not by the wanted drug felon, but by Nika Nicole Holbert. While, Holbert essentially complied with Officer Baker's directives during the first few minutes of their interaction, her compliance changed after Officer Baker found what appeared to be marijuana and a powdery substance in her bag and attempted to detain her while waiting for backup officers. Officer Baker drew his non-lethal taser in an effort to safely bring Holbert into custody. Officer Baker drew his service pistol when he saw that Holbert had pulled a gun, as he demanded that she put the gun down, Holbert shot Baker. He returned the fire. Officer Baker was shot in the side of his torso, the round went under his bulletproof vest. Holbert tossed her semi-automatic pistol in the parking lot before fleeing in the Camaro. She drove for about a block before running off the road at the intersection of Brick Church Pike. Officers rendered aid for her gunshot wounds until an ambulance arrived. She died later Friday morning at a local hospital. Field Training Officer Josh Baker remains in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after being shot during an exchange of gunfire this morning with a woman in a parking lot at Brick Church Pike and Ewing Drive. Officer Baker is a 14-year MNPD veteran and is assigned to the East Precinct. My Comment "You can't be right and wrong at the same time. Nika was wrong; she should have just followed the orders of the officer as he was just doing his job. He also was not wrong to stop the vehicle, search Nika or arrest her. If she followed the officers' orders, she would've gotten her day in court and be alive today. I cannot support Nika just because she is black and I am black. I can only support people when they are right no matter the color of their skin." Paul Jennings Hill killed Dr. John Britton and Britton's bodyguard, James Barrett, since he didn't approve of Britton, who was an abortion doctor. Hill had previously been a minister. Aileen Wuornos made headline news when she was arrested for killing at least six men who she claimed had tried to rape her. Charliese Theron Monster Her self-defense excuse didn't work, and she was sentenced to death by lethal injection. She was executed in 2002. Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people and injured many more when he bombed a Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995. Gary Gilmore had a history violent crimes throughout his life, but it was a gas station stick-up that led to his demise. He killed a gas station attendant and later a motel manager while robbing them. He was caught but only charged with the first murder. Ted Bundy As one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, Ted Bundy horrified people by kidnapping, raping, and murdering at least 30 victims. Tall, handsome means he is a good man Stanley Williams Stanley "Tookie" Williams was best known as the leader of the Los Angeles gang the Crips. He committed at least four murders, which led to his death sentence. While in prison, Williams became an anti-gang advocate and wrote many books for young audiences. Many people protested his execution, since he was making a strong effort in his anti-violence campaigns, but he was still executed on December 13, 2005. William Bonin, otherwise known as the Freeway Killer, raped, tortured, and murdered at least 21 young men and boys between 1979 and 1980. He was executed on February 23, 1996 by lethal injection. He was not remorseful for his crimes, and filed many appeals against his conviction. Charles Starkweather went on a killing spree in which he took 11 lives. He was accompanied by his 14-year-old girlfriend. Their relationship was depicted in many films, and inspired Natural Born Killers. Oba Chandler killed Joan Rogers and her two daughters while they were on vacation in Florida. Chandler had lured them onto his boat by promising a free sunset cruise. He tied concrete bricks to the women and threw them overboard, forcing them to drown. Teresa Lewis arranged for the murders of her husband and stepson in order to profit from their life insurance policies.
Erik Bergum, 43, is accused of shooting his wife, Mary Beth Bergum, 37, before going to another residence, where he fatally shot his mother, Nancy Bergum, 64, Erie County Sheriff John Garcia said at a news conference. Buffalo police are now calling 45-year-old Adam Bennefield a suspect in the murder of 40-year-old Keaira Hudson.Hudson was shot and killed the morning of Oct. 5 on the corner of Richlawn and Shawnee Avenues. Keaira Bennefield, 40, was killed on October 5 as she sat inside her car outside her mother's home, according to Spectrum News. Two of her children were in the back seat and witnessed the shooting.Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for her estranged husband, Adam Bennefield, in connection with the shooting.
