Roswell Presbyterian Church was established in 1839 and is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) within the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. Since our formation, we have been a church dedicated to reaching out in love and service to the community and the world. We are a congregation with deep historic roots, it is because of the dedication and commitment of those who preceded us that we are able to be a vibrant community today. We're thrilled to provide this podcast as a way to hear the message. About the host, Rev. Jeff Meyers, Senior Pastor Jeff attended Princeton Theological Seminary (PTS). He was awarded the Religion and Society Fellowship for his writing on Christian ethics and human rights. After graduating from PTS, Jeff served in college and young adult ministry at North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta for ten years. In 2017, Jeff came to Roswell Presbyterian Church.
The Passover with the Disciples - Matthew 26: 17-25 17 On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal. 20 When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve;[c] 21 and while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.” 25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” He replied, “You have said so.” Moment of Reflection: * Jesus took his place at the table with the disciples: twelve imperfect and flawed friends and followers and one who he knew would betray him. This text reminds us that we all have a place at the table no matter how imperfect or flawed we are, even if we have sinned against God. When we repent, we know God promises to forgive us. We are recipients of the unconditional love and grace of Jesus. Questions for Reflection: How does it feel to know that you have a seat at the table of grace? How can you respond to that in the way you live your life? Prayer: * Most holy and faithful God, we thank you that you are faithful to us even when we are not faithful to you. We thank you that you accept each one of us, imperfect and flawed, and call us your children. Help us to live as a loved and forgiven people, extending love and grace to others. Amen.
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus - Matthew 26: 14-16 14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I betray him to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. Moment of Reflection: * Reading this, one wants to condemn Judas. However, how often do we vacillate from being an anointer to a betrayer? How often do we make decisions based on what will benefit ourselves when it may be to someone’s detriment? How often do we do that to God? How often do we turn our backs to God’s commands to satisfy ourselves? We can learn a lot from Judas. He was Jesus’ friend and faithful follower, but he turned his back on Jesus for a financial reward. We must evaluate every decision based on what God teaches us to do, not on our own understanding. Questions for Reflection: * As you evaluate the main areas of your life, where are you looking to your own understanding for guidance rather than God’s? What steps can you take to shift your focus to God and continue to live for Jesus rather than yourself? *Prayer: * Dear God, please help us live for you and not for ourselves. We know that when we live according to your will, we will bear good fruit and flourish. Amen.
The Anointing at Bethany - Matthew 26: 6-13 (NRSV) 6 Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8 But when the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, “Why this waste? 9 For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12 By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.” Moment of Reflection: * The disciples’ reaction seems completely understandable here. Their anger seems righteous. Why would this woman waste expensive ointment when the money could be used to help those in need? It seems they have been listening to Jesus. However, they did not understand what was happening. This woman is paying attention to Jesus’ presence in the moment. She is preparing his body for burial. So often, there is not just one right way to do things. We must pay attention to Jesus’ presence in each moment and look for guidance to where he may be leading—sometimes even in unexpected ways. Question for Reflection: * In what ways can you focus your mind and heart this week to be more aware of Jesus’ presence and guidance? *Prayer: * Lord, we often get caught up in our circumstances and situations and don’t take the time to look at the bigger picture or see things from your perspective. Help us to focus on your presence in our lives in each moment and to follow your lead even when it’s unexpected. Amen.
Matthew 26: 1-5 26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and they conspired to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.” Moment of Reflection: Isn’t the gospel supposed to be good news? That’s what the word gospel means! This seems like bad news for the disciples, but we know that Jesus is counter-cultural. He is letting his disciples know what is going to happen. He wants them to be prepared, but what seems like a future full of death is not what was truly in store. His death is going to be brutal and highlights the brokenness of people and the world, but that is not where the story ends. Jesus knows that life is going to come out of his death. Jesus is going to show that strength comes out of weakness. God is at work even amid brokenness. Questions for Reflection: In what areas of your life have you experienced or are experiencing brokenness? Have you been able to notice where God has been at work even in the brokenness? Prayer: Holy God, we know that you will never leave us or forsake us. There is nowhere we will go that you will not also go. Help us to see where you are working in our lives and to have confidence that you are at work when we cannot see it. Amen.

Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Lent is a season of the Christian year when we acknowledge that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. Through confession and repentance, we will express our utter reliance on God’s saving grace. Over the next 40 days, we invite you to grow in your relationship with God and one another. Through our Lenten sermon series, Searching for Resurrection, we hope to aid you in this process. Over the next six Sundays, we will look at the stories of six figures in the final days leading up to Jesus’ death. Through their lives, we look to discover how the resurrection of Christ impacts our own lives. Today, though, is more of an introductory sermon setting the stage for the coming weeks. I look forward to searching for resurrection with you!
Today we conclude our sermon series, "Counterfeit Gods", by taking a look at what it means to make an idol of oneself. Pastor Jeff unpacks for us the words of Jesus as found in Mark 8 in which he rebukes the apostle Peter for being concerned with his own desires rather than the will of God. Join us next Sunday as we begin the journey of Lent together with our sermon series "Searching for Resurrection".
This week, as we continue our sermon series "Counterfeit Gods", Pastor Jeff takes a look at a familiar scripture about love to help us see where we might be tempted to make romantic relationships our source of meaning, rather than finding our true identity in God's love for us.
Today we continue our sermon series, Counterfeit Gods, by looking at the idol of work. Pastor Jeff takes us through the Parable of the Workers and unpacks how we might put our work in the place of God.
Today we continue our sermon series, Counterfeit Gods, by looking at the idol of food. What a tumultuous relationship we have with food! We love how it makes us feel to eat, but we often hate what the food does to our bodies. We stress eat. We emotionally eat. We restrict our food to control our lives. However, food is often a reason for families and loved ones to come together. Certainly, food is a gift and a curse! This morning let’s look at what God has to say about food and our relationship with it.
Today we continue our sermon series, "Counterfeit Gods." This week, Pastor Jeff takes us through the story of the Tower of Babel and delves into how we tend to utilize technology in order to create a name for ourselves rather than in service to God.
Today we continue our sermon series, "Counterfeit Gods." So far, we have explored the gods of busyness and leisure and how they can prevent us from living a full and flourishing life. Today's sermon will explore the theme of family. While families are indeed good, we will see the negative effects they can have if we elevate them to the place reserved for God. We believe putting family in its right place will allow us to live graciously and freely with God and our families.
Last Sunday we began our New Year sermon series, “Counterfeit Gods,” reflecting on busyness. Today we will look at a somewhat obscure passage from 2 Thessalonians about leisure. As the cliché goes, sometimes there can be too much of a good thing. I look forward to exploring how we are called to both work and rest as God has designed us to.
Join us as we begin a new sermon series looking at how things in our lives can prevent us from enjoying the life God has created us for. While these things are often good, they become harmful to us when they exceed their proper place in our lives. We hope this series will help you live a more abundant life as we enter this new year.
On this Fourth Sunday of Advent Pastor Jeff addresses the difference between happiness and pleasure from true Joy that is found only in Christ! We invite you to join us in celebrating the birth of Christ at one of our Christmas Eve services at either 3, 5, 7, 8 or 11 pm.
The Christmas season offers one of the key times of the year when people return to church. The music warms their hearts, the beauty of the lights and greenery bring back fond memories, and the message of the season is truly good news.
Advent points to the coming of Jesus as we remember his arrival to Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, his presence in our hearts every day, and his promise to come again in glory. We at RPC hope to witness to that good news through all our ministries and activities.
Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the time that leads up to Christmas. The word, advent, comes from the Latin word for “coming.” Advent is the season when we celebrate the three ways that Jesus comes to us: when he was born in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, when he comes into our hearts daily, and when he promises to come in glory at the end of time. Our sermon series this year will focus on the gifts that Christ’s advent brings. For many of us, the Christmas season can bring back bad memories of a painful experience, the loss of a loved one, and the letdown of unfulfilled dreams. And so today, we will focus on the gift of hope that Jesus offers. My prayer is that each of us will experience the hope of Jesus Christ today!
I am so glad you are here with us to worship this morning. During our Yesvember series, we have examined God’s “YES” to us through Jesus Christ and what our “YES” response to God looks like in our lives. Today we will hear what God clearly says to us about responding “YES” to God’s call to us through the prophet Isaiah. One of the great things about serving the children and youth here at RPC is having the privilege of helping young people discover God’s call on their lives. All of us are called by God in one way or another. The question becomes, how will we respond to that call? As we begin this Thanksgiving week, I am incredibly thankful for the Roswell Presbyterian Church family. God is at work in mighty ways through this church, and it is a privilege to partner in ministry with you all. I pray that each of you will have a wonderful holiday this week and will join us for worship next Sunday to kick off the Advent season. If you haven’t invited a friend to church recently, maybe consider who God might be calling you to bring to church during the Advent season!
We are heading into one of the busiest times of year. Life will be full of hubbub, filled with activities like holiday parties, family pictures, and purchasing presents. The season can get so crazy that we forget to even enjoy it. What might it mean to find rest during this time of year? How can we say “Yes” to God and find the peace that Christ offers? These are a couple of the questions we will explore this morning.
To kick off Yesvember, last week we looked at what it means for the apostle Paul to say that in Christ all of God’s promises are “yes.” We heard that in Christ’s triumph over death in the resurrection, Jesus demonstrates the power to keep all the promises of God. Today, we will focus on our side as a hearer of those promises by asking, What does it mean for us to trust in the promises of God? An enthusiastic “thank you” to all of you who have committed financially to help Roswell Presbyterian Church flourish in 2020! We hope every member will commit to make an impact through the ministries of RPC by pledging to give next year. Your faithful planning will help our leadership discern how God is calling us to minister to our congregation and community next year. We can’t do it without you!
Today we begin a new sermon series looking at the great Yes! passages in the Bible. We hear No from so many voices in our lives, what does it mean to trust in God’s Yes? I believe this message can make a profound, practical impact in our lives.
Today we conclude our sermon series on Jesus’ story about the Good Samaritan. In the previous weeks, we reflected on how our beliefs about God influence the way we think and feel about the world. Today’s sermon focuses on how God calls us to respond and live out our convictions. We will discover that Jesus challenges us to serve surprising people with hearts full of mercy and compassion. That’s the kind of community God is calling RPC to be!
Today, we will see at what loving with our hearts looks like. Throughout the month of October, we hope you will respond to these messages by committing to give financially to the ministry and mission of RPC next year. You can make a commitment on the form in this bulletin, in the cards in the pews, or at www.roswellpres.org/give. My hope is that we can share the same love of Christ that my family experienced last Sunday with everyone who encounters our family of faith, whether inside or outside the church walls.
At Roswell Presbyterian Church, we believe we are a family of faith united in Jesus Christ to love with our head, heart, and hands. The question we are asking this morning is, what does it look like for the work of ministry to flourish in and through RPC when we are loving with our head? We think through this question as we continue to study one of Jesus’ most famous teachings, the story of the Samaritan who showed compassion and mercy. We will look at how it specifically teaches us to love God with our mind. How can we approach our faith in a way that values our intellect and does not diminish our ability to think critically? And if we are thinking critically about our faith, how does that impact our ability to love God and love others?
Today we launch our Generosity season with the theme Flourish. Over the next month, we will explore God’s desire for all of creation to flourish. At Roswell Presbyterian Church we want to contribute to that effort! It’s fitting today is also World Communion Sunday where we celebrate the sacrament of Communion with Christians all around the world. God wants all people on earth to experience the love, peace, and justice that comes through Jesus Christ. As we celebrate Communion today, we bear witness to the great hope that Jesus offers. Let us center our hearts and minds on this great news found only in Jesus Christ.
Today we conclude our sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer. So far, we’ve explored why Jesus invites us to call God, “Father.” We’ve talked about God’s sovereignty and aligning “my will” with “thy will.” We’ve talked about God’s care for seemingly mundane concerns like daily bread and forgiveness. This morning we will answer some of our remaining questions about how our prayers fit into God’s ultimate, cosmic purposes.
Over two years ago, RPC’s Session (the ruling elders of the church) set our Strategic Plan for the next five years. One of our key initiatives was to focus on building fellowship among our congregation. You can support this effort by joining a Community Group for the month of October. Please go to www.roswellpres.org/grow to sign up today! This morning we will continue our Fall sermon series looking at the Lord’s Prayer. Today’s passage focuses on our need for deliverance from evil. Have you ever needed help? Do you ever find yourself asking for deliverance? Where do you turn in times of danger? We will explore how Scripture answers these questions today.
Today, we continue our study of The Lord’s Prayer by looking at the prayer’s fifth petition which has to do with forgiveness. Practicing forgiveness can be one of the most challenging activities of the Christian life. Do you find it difficult to forgive? Do you ever find yourself trapped in a prison of bitterness and resentment? Do you hold onto past wrongs long after you should have let them go? Surely all of us could answer yes to these questions at some point in our life. As he teaches us to pray, Jesus invites us to step into the freedom that only comes through forgiveness. In our sermon, we will explore why Jesus asks us to pray in this way, how we can forgive even the most difficult wrongs done to us, and then we will discover the difference forgiveness makes in our lives. I hope you will join me in courageously stepping into the freedom that comes only through forgiveness!
When Jesus introduces “The Lord’s Prayer” to his disciples, he actually tells them to “pray to your Father who is in secret.” So how is it that this private, secretive prayer became so public? Maybe our first hint is in the way Jesus lays out the phrases: “Our Father..., give us..., forgive us..., lead us..., deliver us...” Establishing this model prayer with words that bring us together was a brilliant move on Jesus’ part! As we celebrate “The Lord’s Supper,” it is our custom to say to one another when passing the bread, “the body of Christ.” Hearing that before we eat the bread is a personal reminder of Jesus’ physical sacrifice for us. It is also a good opportunity to look beyond ourselves and remember that “the body of Christ” is present in the world today through you and me, the community of faith. It has been a true honor to serve this community of faith, the Roswell Presbyterian Church, for the past eight years as one of your pastors. I am forever changed because of seeing God work in and through you both locally and globally. I believe with all of my heart that the best is yet to come for this body of Christ!
Today we kick off our program year with new Sunday School classes, new Wednesday Evening Fellowship programming, and the return of the choir (thank heavens!), along with so many other opportunities to join God’s ministry here at RPC. I hope you will take some time to look over this bulletin to discern how God is calling you to get involved. One of the most common areas of the Christian life that people ask pastors about involves the practice of prayer. Why pray if God already knows what God is going to do? What should I pray for? Should I change when I pray? This list of questions goes on and on. I hope today’s sermon will help you better understand the nature of prayer and help you be more attentive to God’s presence in your life.
Good morning! Today we conclude our sermon series, Follow Me. We have journeyed through the Gospel of John and focused on the various "I am" statements that Jesus makes to describe himself. The interesting thing about our passage this morning is that while Jesus makes very clear that he is the king, it is not one of the "I am" statements. Jesus does not directly say "I am the King." Also in our passage this morning, Jesus explains that he is not king in the way we typically think of a king. He continues to insist that his kingdom is not of this world. What does Jesus mean by that anyway? And why wouldn't Jesus just come out and call himself king? We will think through those things this morning as we study God's Word together!
In today’s sermon, we will look at what it means to “abide in Christ.” If you’re anything like me, you often feel Christ’s love and peace crowded out by the cares and concerns of life. However, Jesus promises us that abiding in him will lead to making our joy complete. What does that mean? How can we experience that kind of joy? I look forward to addressing these questions with you today!
An obituary notice headline named a prominent attorney who had died, and declared “FuneralArrangements Pending.” The article shared many of the accomplishments of this apparently brilliant attorney. It noted his extensive educational background, decorated military service, his community service, membership in numerous service organizations, and listed his surviving family members. The obituary closed by informing friends where to direct memorial contributions. It was truly a fitting tribute to a prominent community leader. There was only one thing wrong. He was not dead. Somehow, some way, the newspaper had received erroneous information. Now, of course, this proved to be very embarrassing for the paper and very painful for family members, even though I understand there was a retraction printed the following day. But as I have considered this over the past several weeks while thinking about this sermon, two aspects of the story immediately came to mind. (1) The statement of Mark Twain that the news of his death was greatly exaggerated, and (2) The reality and truth of at least part of that obituary notice. In reality, all of our funeral arrangements “are pending.” Today’s Biblical passage deals with this subject in the life of Jesus as we continue our Summer Sermon Series, ”Follow me,” and look at Jesus’ words, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.”
“Where are you from?” – It’s not an uncommon question, even if you are just trying to make small talk or are actually curious to know the background of a person. It seems simple enough, but Jesus’ answer to the question is not so simple. In our scripture today, Jesus tries to tell a group of people where he is from, but they have a hard time understanding his answer. In fact, his explanation just leads to another, more pointed question, “Who are you?” If we look closely, we will see that when Jesus says that he is “from above” it also tells much about who he is. I’m glad you are part of the Roswell Presbyterian Church faith family and have joined us on this quest to know and follow Jesus, today and forevermore.
We are only a few weeks into this summer, and already this abundant life in Christ is happening here and now. Through our camps, Bible studies, and VBS, it is so clear that God is at work in mighty ways through this church. It is my prayer that through our worship today, we would experience the transforming love and abundant life God offers as we worship together.
In worship today we will continue our sermon series examining the various “I Am” statements that Jesus made in the Gospel of John. Today we will look at “I am the light of the world.” What does it mean that Jesus is the light of the world and how does that call us to be at work in our context and in relationship with others around us? How are we called to be light?
What a great start we had last week to our 2nd Mile for Mission Kick-off! Our guest speaker for the day, Shawn Duncan, shared many insights that will move RPC forward in healthier mission outreach, especially now, as we bring our gifts together to support our local and global mission partners. If you missed any of his presentations, go to https://www.roswellpres.org/serve. Today, we will make connections with the message from a well-known Bible story and current situations of people we know through our mission partnerships. As we see in the ancient story and in today’s world, God is faithful to help us all go through “fiery” ordeals. Still, we have a responsibility to be ready to face challenges and join with our neighbors so all will experience life and peace. Special Guest: Zablon Kuria.
Every year at RPC we highlight two seasons to focus on what we can contribute – both financially and through service – to the ministry of Jesus Christ. Today, we kick off one of those seasons called 2nd Mile for Mission. During this season, we will invite you to commit to give to our mission budget that supports our local and global mission partners. We hope to have 100% of the congregation participate! This grand goal highlights a core aspect of RPC’s identity, namely, that we exist not just for ourselves, but also for others. This is central to who we are because this is the same message that Jesus preached and the life he lived. I pray that you will join me in contributing to 2nd Mile for Mission as we follow Jesus in serving others! Special Guest: Shawn Duncan, Lupton Center.

Today is Palm Sunday, the first day of the most important week of the Christian year. Over the next seven days, we will take the long journey from Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, to his last meal with his disciples, to his crucifixion, and finally to his triumph over death itself. I look forward to walking this path with you. In our passage, it appears that Jesus chooses not to acknowledge someone in need. Can that really be true? Do we have a Savior that ignores people who cry out to him? I wonder if, like the woman in the Matthew passage, each of us has had a time in our lives when we are certain that God was choosing to ignore us instead of choosing to help us. If that is the case, what does that mean for us and what does it say about God? How wide is God’s mercy? Is there room for everyone?
In our everyday lives, where do we see people following the teachings of Jesus? Maybe we observe these interactions at work, or while running errands, or at social events, or other activities. In our passage today, Jesus tells John the Baptist’s disciples, “Go and tell John what you hear and see:...” These words are followed by mentions of healings and compassion for the people of God. Jesus tells them that his ministry is to those outside the perimeters of society, to those people who need kindness, acceptance and healing. It is not a secret. It’s right there in front of them if they would just pay attention. These teachings have been passed down through generations and are now passed to us. It is our responsibility to pass them on to future generations. In our busy lives, do we take the time to notice others carrying out the teachings of Jesus? Can we slow down enough to watch for these moments? Do we show kindness and Christ’s love to others we encounter each day? Opportunities are anywhere, at any time, and can be as simple as a smile, a kind word, a quick phone call or email, or even a compliment. As we go about our lives this week, let’s look for others who are following Christ’s teachings. And may others also observe us sharing the kindness and love of Christ in our interactions with God’s people. In this morning’s passage, we will read stories of two people in desperate need. While they take different approached to seek help from Jesus, both receive the healing they seek. Their examples have much to teach us about seeking help for ourselves and our ministries in serving others. I look forward to exploring what their lives might teach us!
In our sermon, we will continue our journey through Lent as Jesus encounters “outsiders.” In today’s passage, we see Jesus take grief from the religious leaders for eating with tax collectors and sinners, the “outsiders” of the first century Jewish community. Jesus responds to these objections by telling the leaders that they should learn the meaning of Hosea 6:6, “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” This is a provocative, grace-filled claim that can unsettle us as much as it unsettled the Jewish religious leaders. But if you’ve ever felt like an outsider, you know how good grace can make you feel. I hope we all experience the grace of Jesus Christ today!
Today marks the first Sunday during the season of Lent. We experienced the imposition of ashes together this past Wednesday, and today we embark upon what for most of us is a familiar, yet ever so difficult journey toward the cross. In in, we are called to acknowledge and confront our own sin and mortality. We trust in God’s authority and victory over sin in Jesus Christ. Though our worship, our Community Groups, our Bible studies, and our individual reflections, we have the opportunity to remember, reflect, and be renewed toward our own acceptance of God’s forgiveness. Today, we look at a familiar story, and are faced again with God’s amazing answer to the human condition we call sin.
Today we conclude The Last Lecture sermon series by looking at the closing words of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Every good speech should wrap up with a strong finish and Jesus doesn’t disappoint. His sermon closes with a summarizing statement about the difference his words can make in our lives – we would do well to listen and obey them!
Today we continue in our Last Lecture sermon series by looking at Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. As we will see, if you think walking down the path that Jesus lays out is easy – think again! This is a fantastic day for us to worship together! Our scripture this morning is a passage that you have perhaps heard before. It calls us to be salt and light in the world. On this Martin Luther King Jr. day week-end, it is most appropriate we remember the call to stand up for what is of God and be a beacon on a hill. We give thanks for faithful men and women, like MLK Jr, who have modeled for us such faithfulness even when the world was pressing in. Also, today will be a morning of celebration! Our Senior Pastor, Jeff Meyers, and his wife Courtney have welcomed their son into the world. Major Quirós Meyers was born on Wednesday, January 16 at 7:08pm weighing in at 9lbs 7oz happy and healthy! Mom and baby are both doing great! We give thanks for this sweet baby! I am so delighted you are here! I look forward to worshipping together
