In this second of our podcasts revisiting favourite moments on the groundbreaking 'Women Today' programme, Beth and Christy share an interview with watchmaker Roger W. Smith OBE - one of the world’s finest craftsmen, creating exceptional and highly sought after timepieces, working out of a purpose built studio in the North of the Island.
He shared memories from his childhood, from his early years learning his craft as the only apprentice to Dr George Daniels CBE, talked about important figures from his family life and about setting up and building his own successful studio, training up apprentices of his own and how important it is to him to have the Isle of Man marked on every watch and mentioned in all of the promotion for his extraordinary creations.

The former police officer and MLC Dudley Butt joined Beth on the Conister Rock on February 8th 2019. He remembered character building days growing up on a farm thinning turnips on his hands and knees for hours on end and his school days at Laxey Primary School and then Ramsey Grammar. They also talked about his nearly 40 year police career which saw him involved in some of the most significant events on the Isle of Man in recent times. His music choices included Genesis, Beatles and an unusual track concerning Fish Heads...

Any parents of school aged children who are listening will be well aware that is half term. Which means finding ways to keep the young folk entertained and happy, while also trying not to break the bank. Imagine dealing with this as a single parent– having to find a way to look after the children while also holding down a job, and digging around for those extra pennies to pay for activities.
New research by Equifax has looked into how much families spending during this week, and has shed light on how single parents struggle to accommodate the extra costs.

They just about got thought it!

Storytelling has been used as both a form of entertainment and education for hundreds if not thousands of years, and parents are still using stories today as a method of teaching their children about the world - and dangers - around them.
To highlight digital safety and wellbeing when it comes to young people and technology, a new book has been released to help parents talk to their little ones about social media and how to use it responsibly. ‘#Goldilocks’ is a collaboration between the award-winning children’s author Jeanne Willis and the UK’s number one illustrator Tony Ross and is a re-imagined version of the original fairy tale, updated for a modern audience.

Saturday 19th January saw the premiere of the incredible documentary "General Magic", which has won awards around the world and which Time Out described as “"One of the top ten films of #Tribeca2018...inspires big dreams at every turn". With Manx born Director, Producer and Writer Sarah Kerruish in attendance for both screenings, it's safe to say everyone was indeed inspired. Following the morning screening, which was put on especially for young people, Christy had a quick chat with some of the younger audience members after the event – but first checked in with Love Tech’s Lydia Barbara and Chairman Angela Van Den Berg, who began by telling us a little about her background. Did you know that the fashion industry is responsible for 92m tons of waste dumped in UK landfills every year? Oxfam has conducted some research showing that almost 3/4 of Brits will buy one or more new item of clothing specifically for the Christmas party season, splashing out an average of £106... the spend equates to about £3.5 BILLION on new clothes for Christmas, with eight million items that will only be worn ONCE. The charity wants people to think about the implications for buying disposable – or ‘fast’ - fashion that is worn once at Christmas and then thrown away – whether that means wearing an item again or giving it away..Christy DeHaven and Sarah Hendy spoke with fashion activist and former Clothes Show presenter,Caryn Franklin MBE, to find out what little bits we can do to help turn the textile tide.
University College has a huge number of Higher Education courses, from cookery to ceramics, gardening to astronomy. And last week, there was a very special occasion at the Homefield Road building, which highlighted not only the diversity of classes and students, but also the importance of these courses to the community. By now, some of you may already know the name Lale Sokolov. The remarkable story of his time in Auschwitz has become a best selling book after an encounter with screenwriter Heather Morris led to the formation of a very important friendship. Lale was largely responsible for creating the most iconic, identifying feature of the Holocaust- the blue numbers that he was made to tattoo onto fellow prisoners' arms. What makes this story so memorable is his incredible zest for life – and the love story that developed against all odds, one that became a romance surviving for 60 years, decades after the camps closed. Difficult though the story is, it is a story of hope and of courage. Christy spoke with Heather to find out more about Lale and how she came to write the extraordinary book.
The couple who've played a part in the momentous occasions of so many Islanders over their 40 yrs in business as Charles Alexander Jewellers, shared music & memories with Beth and Christy on 23rd November, as Charles and Susan Jane Alexander look ahead to the final weeks of their family firm.In early October news of their retirement was received with a heavy heart by many – although the subsequent closing down sale attracted hundreds of people who queued the length of Strand Street for their chance to grab a bargain from the shop with the reputation of being one of the premier jewellers in the Isle of Man.They talked about working in gem mines in South Africa, being caught up in revolutions in Egypt and shared stories of their involvement in some truly momentous couples' engagements (including one involving a dolphin!).
Christmas is getting quirkier every year - and the advent calendar market is no exception. You can now get them with all kinds of fillings from biscuits, to cheese, to high class beauty products. So much for pretty festive pictures! And now you can even get ones with a wee tot of booze behind every door...This year it seems that alcohol advent calendars are projected to be the newest trendsetters and Gin is the drink on everyone’s lips, as sales of the spirit are at a record high; the UK alone now has more than 400 distilleries- including two right here on the Isle of Man (Seven Kingdoms and Fynoderee). Boutique-y Gin have released their own calendar with a dram-a-day behind every door. Christy caught up with Steph DiCamillo from the retailer to find out more, and also spoke to David T. Smith, author of The Gin Dictionary. They gave us hints and tips on the best gins, how to drink them and why they think gin is so popular..

If you’re a sixth form student on the Isle of Man – or know one – who is looking to expand horizons into galaxies far far away, ManSat could have the perfect opportunity. Christy caught up Dr Jennifer Stone, Snr Manager of Regulatory Affairs at Mansat, who won the very first scholarship back in 2000, going where no other Manx student had gone before – a giant leap which resulted in a career in the space industry.

Musician and composer Simeon Wood was with Beth and Christy on the Conister Rock on Nov 9th. He shared backstage secrets from Britain's Got Talent, talked about childhood freedoms, first music loves, writing music for Snickers adverts; he also told us a very moving story about reconnecting with his first music teacher and of course shared some wonderful music choices that mean something to him and illustrate important moments in his life to this point.
Alison Schreiber teaches French and Spanish at King Williams College. But for the last 4 years, she has also been researching the 139 World War 1 casualties from the college, and organising the Centenary Celebrations - which involves a very special photographic tribute in the Chapel. Beth and Christy caught up with her in the college grounds to find out more.
Part of our series of interviews in recognition of the sacrifice and service of those who fought in the wars – from first hand experiences, to family members relating the often very emotional stories of their loved ones. It seemed no sooner had the Great War finished - and men, women and children were trying to rebuild their lives while dealing with the atrocities and enormous loss suffered by so many - that another World War loomed large. This of course meant that fathers, mothers, brothers and daughters were in the position of having to watch their loved ones leave home once more, potentially to suffer the same dreadful fate that Their War was meant to put an end to.
One such family was that of Fransis Hinds, nee Dobson. Having spent her early years living at Groudle with no running water or electricity, she decided she wanted an adventure and saw the Forces as an opportunity. Christy DeHaven went to speak with her about her own experience in the 2nd WW as a clerk and decoder, only to find that her father, uncles, brothers and more had been caught up in some of the biggest battles of both conflicts. With a little help from her daughter Gill, we pieced together some of their story - one that they’re still learning about themselves.

We started with the Chairman of the Isle of Man Royal Naval Association, Mr Tom Quirk. We hear a great deal about the 1st and 2nd World Wars but one war – at the time referred to by those involved as the 3rd World War – isn’t often talked about. Tom served in the Navy in this war, the Korean War, in the 1950s and he told Christy DeHaven all about his experiences.
Christy was joined on the Rock on 2nd Nov by Annie Kissack - teacher, composer, writer, singer, poet - whose life long passion for her native language music and dance was instilled in her by meeting much lauded folklorist Mona Douglas.
Annie continues to play a hugely important part in keeping Manx culture alive - not least informing, educating and shaping future Manx generations with her work at the Bunschoill Gaelgagh, but also from her work Directing and writing for Manx language choir Caarjyn Cooidjagh, amongst other talents.
Annie shared wonderful memories of her life growing up in Onchan, of her time with Mona and other notable Manx preservationists, of her time at University in Wales and the life lessons she learned there and, of course, she shared some equally wonderful pieces of music - from Manx staples, to Latin American baroque!
Nov 1st is World Vegan Day – which also marks the start of World Vegan Month – and while there may be some way to go in terms of education about the subject, research has revealed that 50% of the British public would consider becoming vegan at some point in their lives. So what’s holding them back? Christy spoke with Dominika Peeyasekka from The Vegan Society and Vegan Chef Day Radley to find out more about what it means to be a vegan – and also what they think about attitudes like that of the Waitrose Magazine Editor who suggested they should be “trapped and forcefed meat..”
Anna Cottle is just “one of those people”. You may have seen her name popping up in the local media over the past year or so, whether it be for collecting truckloads of sanitary products to distribute to women who can’t afford them, or for her recent trip to Uganda – with a netball charity... You might wonder why on earth Ugandan villagers might need Netball in their lives – well, the charity in question – the Netball Development Trust or NDT as she refers to it - delivers the game in a number of less developed countries using it as a tool to bring communities together, working with partners to deliver 'sexual and reproductive health' awareness too. Christy caught up with Anna on the phone recently to find out about the trip and about her other, many charitable interests.
On July 13th Ian Meikle joined Beth on the Conister Rock to share music and memories. Born and bred in the Isle of Man, he now owns and edits a weekly magazine in Canberra, and co-hosts a radio show every Sunday.
Beth and Ian spent a lovely hour reminiscing about days gone by, the Regal (or Royalty?) Cinema and his music choices reflected the earliest memories Ian has of growing up on the Island.
Former Manx politician Leonard Singer joined Beth on the Conister Rock on July 20th 2018. He shared some wonderfully witty and often very poignant memories as he explained the pieces of music he had chosen.

Christy was joined on the Conister Rock on 17th August by Dylis Watson, former Head of 6th Form at Ballakermeen High School. As a Teacher to hundreds - if not thousands - of students in a career in education that began in 1955 and continues today, Mrs Watson has helped shape the lives of many young people, she is a teacher who manages to maintain a balance of respect and friendship and she delights in continuing to follow the progress of her students throughout their adult lives, staying in touch with many of them.
She told us about the many changes she has witnessed in the education system, about the inspiration of people like Alan Pickard, her friendship with artist Norman Sayle and her love of the great outdoors, camping and her glorious garden.
Dylis also shared some wonderful pieces of music - from Eva Cassidy to Verdi - and we must make special mention of the fact we didn't have time to fit in her final choice of 'Lady in Red' by Chris De Burgh as she arrived resplendent in the colour to honour that choice!
Christy was joined on the Conister Rock on 3rd August by star of stage and screen David Artus, who has bagged some of the biggest roles in musical theatre in his time, from Jean Valjean in Les Miserables to The Phantom in Phantom of the Opera; he has written and produced 7 pantomimes (and gave Broadway star Samantha Barks her first professional role!) and now lives The Good Life in Kirk Michael with his lovely wife Victoria, their children and a some miniature sheep and tiny horses. As y'do... Dave talked about what it was like being one of the only young boys in tap shoes, about dealing with dyslexia, about his adoptive parents and finding his birth family and, of course, about some of the fantastic times he has spent on stage playing everything from human cats to Biblical bad boys.
Christy was joined on the Conister Rock on July 4th 2018 by Southern 100 Races Press Officer and Media Co-Ordinator Phil Edge. He first became involved the ‘Friendly Races’ in 1994 and is most definitely the right man for the job - saying that “Road Racing has been and still is my passion – something that has held me together for most of my life. it is in your veins and once there – never leaves you.” He shared fabulous memories from childhood through to today, reminiscing about his first bikes race meets, his favourite moments, encounters with Geoff Duke and Joey Dunlop and so much more. Christy is joined on the Conister Rock by a Man of Mischief with a very recognisable voice and one or two famous catchphrases under his flat cap... Derry Kissack is a proud Manxie, skilled tradesman, champion sidecar trialsman, after dinner speaker and published author; he can hypnotise a chicken with a piece of chalk and - and we're not sure if these two things are related - he’s the man tasked with keeping control of the World Famous Purple Helmets…He shared some wonderful music and memories over the course of our time with him and was, as expected, more than a little mischievous.
As regular listeners will know, Rowan Henthorn – who has worked recently as an advisor to the Isle of Man Government on the issue of plastic pollution – has spent the past few weeks floating around in the North Pacific Ocean. This may sound like a lovely marine adventure but sadly, Rowan and the all female crew of the SeaDragon were actually making their way through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, something they described as ‘plastic soup’. Christy caught up with Rowan via satellite phone just as she was starting her watch on night shift, to find out how the expedition has gone. As you can imagine, the quality of the call isn’t ‘what you’d call crystal clear – but then, neither is the ocean...
Well known to regular Manx Radio listeners for the being a voice of the weather reports, Kirsty is Manx born and bred, and it was a film that she watched at the age of 11 which helped to map out her future career. We learnt about the struggle Kirsty overcame to realise her dream, in a truly inspirational tale of how you really can achieve something if you have your heart set on it. Kirsty also credits her mum and dad for supporting and believing in her when she had lost confidence in her own ability. From the Island to the UK, America and back again, we heard some wonderful tales from Kirsty's past, found out that sometimes people really do hold her responsible for the weather - and also learnt of her slight obsession with one particular detective drama...
The thriller writer Douglas Stewart shares music and memories on the Conister Rock with Beth Espey. Now residing in the Isle of Man, Douglas was brought up in England and became a London based international lawyer, later living and practising in the USA. He was involved in some of the most high profile cases of the 20th Century. In tandem, he developed a successful career as an internationally read author of mystery thrillers.
Christy DeHaven visits the beautifully colourful and creative mini-gardens planted by school children from all parts of the Island, created as part of the 2018 Year of Our Island initiative. Apparently, the Sufragettes learned jiu-jitsu in order to protect themselves during the sometimes violent clashes with police when fighting for their rights - who knew?! To celebrate the UK's 100 year anniversary of some women getting the vote (something which the Isle of Man actually achieved in 1881, 36 years previously - not that we're boasting...), Arbory Brownies decided to get a taster of the Brazilian martial art as part of gaining their Sufragette badge. Christy DeHaven went to Arbory Primary School where Coach Conrad Roberts and his assistant Lucy Southward from Gracie Barra Isle of Man were teaching the troop some defensive moves...

Passionate about community-driven change and citizen-centred democracy, he is now working with Isle of Man based mental health charity Quing (by invitation of Graham Clucas), on a mission to help us recognise and develop the gifts and skills our own communities have to offer. Christy DeHaven met with him recently, to find out how we can tap into that People Power right here on the Isle of Man.
On Women Today on 17th May 2018, as part of our special series of programmes for Mental Health Awareness Week 2018, Gemma Park shared her remarkable story and journey through gender reassignment. She spoke frankly about what it has been like for her to live in 'the wrong body', dealing with gender dysphoria, the challenges and discrimination she has faced and the emotional and psychological impact of it all.

Douglas Mayor Debbie Pitts shared music and memories on the Conister Rock with Beth on May 4th 2018, reflecting back on her year in the role that both her mother and father have previously shared. She talked about her family and the difficult times they have weathered together, about her childhood and teenage years on the Isle of Man and talked about her aspirations and achievements in the office.
The only man to be Chief Minister of the Isle of Man twice shared music and memories on the Conister Rock on 16th March 2018.
Someone who can truly be described as a Manxman through and through (his birthday is July 5th), Mr Gelling spoke of his early childhood while his father was away at war, his school days in Santan and then Murray’s Road and the moment he first met the love of his life Joan.
His political career is well documented. His dedication to public service dates back to the early 1960s when he first became a member of Santan Parish Commissioners and during the programme we learnt a great deal about what shaped the man who would be Chief Minister of the Isle of Man on two separate occasions.
Donald Gelling’s music choices include a traditional hymn, a classic he used to sing with his national service comrades and a well known musical number.

Christy was joined on the Conister Rock on 18th April by former Chief Minister Tony Brown OBE, a man who began his working life before the age of 10, delivering the news to his Castetown neighbours on a humble paper round only, in later years, to become the news himself as a result of his extensive political career.
He shared wonderful stories from his childhood through to now, talked about his rise through the political ranks, about some of the people that inspired him throughout his life and enthused about the Island nation and its people, both of which he clearly cares about. This week saw the 1st of March arrive which - in meteorological terms, is the first day of Spring. Not that you’d know it with all these snow storms! But with the first day of spring also comes the Big Clean, as house proud home bodies across the land reach for the marigolds and start the Spring spruce up. To get some ideas for how to make that clean a little easier, Christy caught up with Lynsey ‘Queen of Clean’ Crombie - from Channel 4’s Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners, and Charlie Freeland – who is a cleaning expert from ampliance manufacturer VorWerk, to get some hints and tips. It's amazing what you can do with potato peelings and a tennis ball..! Christy started by asking Charlie about recent research looking at Britain’s cleaning habits.
Just before the end of 2017 we were joined in the studio by an extraordinary young woman. Laura Cretney is a Middle East Business consultant and she had just given a TedX talk called ‘How to Change the World’. She mentioned while she was with us that she in the process of fundraising for a project in Iraq, to send her artist friend Hannah Rose Thomas to run an art project there with women who had escaped from captivity under ISIL. Should “walk-on” or “grid girls” be banned from the modern sporting arena? And if so, who is qualified to make that decision? Are they just decoration? Is it better to see them doing the sport rather than in front of the sport? It's a very divisive topic, with the girls themselves saying they love the job and to leave them be. Obviously, this is something you see on the Isle of Man at least twice a year, as both the TT and Festival of Motorcyling roll into town with all the glamour and sponsors and everything that goes with – including grid girls. So Christy caught up with Jorden Rafferty - one of the Sure TT grid girls - and Sarah Jarvis, Marketing Manager of the company, who have been one of the TT’s headline sponsors for several years. On 31st Jan 2018 Christy caught up with three members of the Isle of Man Choral Society (Jean-Michel Bazille, Kati Kinley and Susan Griffiths) who had just returned from what can only be described as the trip of a lifetime. They were part of the 49 members of the Society invited to make up the chorus premiering the latest work by Sir Karl Jenkins at the iconic Carnegie Hall. On 26th Jan 2018 our guest on the Conister Rock was the Island's very own 'starman' and astronomer Howard Parkin, an Onchan resident with his sights firmly set on the Dark Skies. Howard’s life seems to lead him on adventures at every turn – from live links with astronauts on the International Space Station, to the time when, in an attempt to have a fairly laid back family holiday, he actually found himself caught up in the mourning of notorious political figure Fidel Castro! But today, we settled back and listened in awe as he talked about the universe, about other life forms, light pollution and - of course - the Origins of Howard himself. With music ranging from the The Eagles to King Crimson, it was a fascinating hour and well worth listening back.

This time of year, the days are getting shorter, meaning of course that the afternoons and mornings are darker - and so are the roads. So a question raised in UK Government recently is perhaps more pertinent now than ever as a consultation, announced following a series of high-profile incidents involving cyclists, looks to examine a raft of potential measures – including the consideration of mandatory wearing of helmets and high vis clothing. Christy spoke to the Isle of Man Constabulary’s Road Safety Manager, Samantha Heard, who is very well aware of the consultation, to find out what she thought of the idea of us making helmets and high vis compulsory for the Island's cycling population
We were joined on the programme on 10th November by 9 year old Lula Brown, who has been raising money and awareness of water based charities since the age of 7; she has now created GUSHGUSH to promote her work and the issues faced by millions of people less fortunate than herself all over the world. Marian Kenny has been in the radio industry for more than 30 years, starting in 1984 at Radio Hallam, Sheffield where her first job was reporting from colliery picket lines during the year-long miners’ strike. She 'scooped' some incredible interviews in her time - miners leader Arthur Scargill and Terry Waite’s mother when the hostages were freed from years of imprisonment in Beirut to name just two, before moving to the IOM in 2003 looking for a quiet life... Luckily for us, she was soon sucked into Manx Radio, where she was appointed News Editor in 2008. Despite all the varied news stories covered in the UK, she describes the Isle of Man as "by far the most varied and challenging ‘patch’ I’ve ever worked in" - in this interview she tells us why, and shares many other fascinating stories and insights, in a special programme broadcast on her final day at the station.
November 24th was a chance for us to have another Conister Rocks special, where we spent a wonderful hour in the company of 89 year old George Davison. George shared his memories with Beth along with some of his favourite pieces of music - including a beautiful recording of himself with the Regal Singers. While sharing music ranging from Les Miserables to La Boheme, George spoke with Beth about what brought him to the Island, about his various appointments such as President of the Caledonian Society, about his time running the Marathon Court Nursing Home with his wife Joan and, of course, about the award winning family business of Davison's Ice Cream. When he was just 11 years old, Ben Grainger scooped 5 medals - including two golds - in the National Para Swimming Championships, where he was the youngest in the Under 14 category. He went on to compete in the British Disability Championships in 2015, winning 3 golds and 2 silvers. Last year, aged just 13, Ben was selected for the British Swimming Para Academy where he is one of 49 athletes in the programme set to develop talent for the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. An Ambassador for Microgaming’s PlayItForward initiative, Ben is also a former winner of the Dreamcatcher Heroes in the Community Award, received the Responsible Business award in September for Positive Role Model and, just a few days ago, landed another as Young Achiever at the Isle of Man Awards for Excellence. Christy managed to distract Ben from his rigorous training routine when he returned to visit the Island in October, and he and his Mum Sonia came to speak about his plans and many achievements...

On Tuesday Oct 31st we themed our show around the oldest continuously running Manx tradition of Hop Tu Naa (for obvious reasons, considering the date!) We were joined by Katie King from Manx National Heritage, James Franklin from Culture Vannin and Ruby Biscoe-Taylor from the music group Biskee Brisht (who have reinvented the Hop Tu Naa song especially for 2017). After the show, we all sat back and had a good old fashioned chinwag about ghostly happenings that have happened to us personally here on the Island, that we just can't explain - I don't think any of us will be venturing near Castle Rushen or Gansey again any time soon, put it that way!! As part of our "When Pirates Waved the Rules" series of special programmes bringing you the Radio Caroline story, Christy caught up with Chris Williams on board HMS Ross Revenge following his live breakfast show broadcast, on the day marking 50 years since the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act was introduced to stop pirate radio. Although Radio Caroline was the Act's main target, she carried on broadcasting and still does to this day. On Friday 14th June 2017, we were delighted to be joined by Manx World War II veteran Hector Duff MM, BEM, Ld’H, TH. Born in 1919 in Sulby village, Hector saw active service throughout the Second World War, and was awarded a Military Medal for bravery in 1942. His mission now is to make sure we never forget the sacrifices that were made. For too many it was the ultimate sacrifice and Hector wants to ensure the Isle of Man's 21 Parish Memorials are cared for and respected. On Tuesday 27th June we were joined by the wonderful Eloise White, whose exhibition 'A Happy Medium' deals very powerfully with her own personal struggles with mental health. Animator and artist in residence at the Sayle Gallery since August 2016, Eloise stayed behind after the programme to talk - among other things - about the inspiration she received from fellow local artist Simon Buttimore, who she sadly didn't meet before he passed away, but who has nevertheless brought her encouragement and continued passion for her work. On Saturday 26th June 2017, the Centenary Centre was taken over by mini musicians learning to be future rock stars, taught by some of the Island's best musical talent, as The Rock Project celebrated with an end of year gig for pupils and tutors alike. Christy went to meet with some of those involved during their soundcheck, and also caught up with Rock Project leader David Rowles. The Rock Project is putting on a 3 day summer school between 23rd and 25th August for ages 7-13. Complete beginners are welcome, and they even provide instruments. Shaun Wilde is a remarkable man; he is one of only 15 people in the world (that are known about) that have 'broken out' of Locked In Syndrome. He came to see us at the end of May 2017 along with Gillian Horsey, Lead Nurse for Stroke at Nobles Hospital, so that they could tell us his incredible story and so that Gill could talk to us about stroke awareness.
We were recently joined on the show by Anne Hodgson, who is the Community Fundraiser for the Walton Centre Charity. Anne was on the Island especially to support a number of people who were raising funds for the centre by taking part in the Parish Walk.
She was invited by the family of one young woman, Katie Holmes, who has spent almost a year as an inpatient at Walton following a serious car accident. Christy was able to spend a short time in the company of 21 year old Katie and her mum, Yvonne, to find out a little more about their story and how the Centre has helped them. After the Parish Walk weekend, we received this wonderful message from Yvonne: “The walkers did very well in difficult conditions! Hazel Teare is the woman behind the Island's open mic poetry nights, a founder member of Poetry Unlimited, member of the Manx Bard Committee – the list goes on – but she is also a performance poet herself – and a published, prize winning poet at that. We ran out of time to hear a 2nd poem from her, so invited her to stay after the show so we could chat a bit more and hear another of her fab creations
Sunday June 18th is Father's Day. We've been asking you to send in your thoughts about what it means to be a Dad in 2017 and you've sent some wonderful comments. So, as Christy's Dad, Steve DeHaven, found himself up at Manx Radio earlier this week (on an entirely different mission), she invited him in to the studio and bravely (foolishly?!) asked him to give his thoughts on modern day fatherhood, and reveal what she was like as a child...
Some of you may remember former guest Jimmy Whittle. Jimmy became something of a celebrity on the Island – and further afield - when he appeared on Channel 4 programme Restoration Man and his unique personality won over viewers and programme makers alike. Jimmy has also battled with depression and alcoholism, both of which were amplified when he lost his partner Lorna under tragic circumstances in her 20s.
Well, Jimmy is making the headlines again - for very positive reason. If you were down at the beer tent on the prom over TT2017, you might have spotted him – you could hardly miss him in fact – building a boat out of beer cans...Christy went down to the tent to catch up with him and find out what exactly he was playing at...

On 8th June, we were joined in the studio by former Island resident Dani Rose, who is now one of the highest qualified 'drone pilots' in Britain. He now works for Flying Pictures, who specialise in aerial work on some of the biggest film and tv productions around (Harry Potter, Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Star Wars...) We barely scratched the surface with Dani while he was on the show, so he agreed to stay behind and chat to us some more; in this podcast, he reveals some of the specialist bits of kit he's created for work on everything from Martin Garrix pop videos (with a cool 190million views) to Midsommer Murders, he talks about safety, about major work challenges and the pressure he and his fellow pilots are under - and whether that popular online shop really will ever use drones to deliver our packages... We were delighted to be joined on 6th June 2017 by a woman who grew up surrounded by bees and Borstal Boys; who ran her own Market Garden, looks after Loughtans, enjoys a spot of boating, REALLY loves fast trains - and whose careful planning, all-weather work and very green fingers have left their colourful mark on the glorious gardens at one of the Island’s most loved heritage sites.
Horticulturalist Cilla Platt recently retired as head gardener at Cregneash after nearly two decades. Her dedication to heritage vegetables and replanting traditional Manx varieties has made a lasting legacy to the gardens of the much loved village.

Isle Expo 2017 was extremely successful; with a theme of ‘Growth’, the 2 day event saw speakers and workshops from leaders and mentors in a number of different fields – technology, investment, food production and more.
One very impressive guest was keynote speaker, Emma Sinclair. Known as a ‘Serial Entrepreneur’, she is the youngest person ever to float a company on the stock market, she revolutionised parking management across the UK and her current venture, EnterpriseJungle, was voted the most innovative new software company at the SAP Pinnacle Awards. Emma is the UK’s first UNICEF Business Mentor and believes that entrepreneurship can change the global economy

Breesha is someone who has played a major part in preserving and promoting Manx culture, while also being an active performer, singing in choirs and playing flutes, whistles and piano in a number of different groups.
She talked about her childhood on a sheep farm, appearing on TV with Boney M dressed in a bonnet, about what it was like have teachers as parents (both of them!) and why the promotion, preservation and evolution of culture is so very, very important to her. On March 31st, we welcomed Fiona Helleur. Fiona is perhaps best known for her superb work at the Kensington Youth Arts Centre, where her dedication and passion for the arts has enriched the lives of hundreds of young people on the Island. She is from an extremely creative family, being the sister of musician Anglin Buttimore, and also artist Simon, who passed away in a tragic accident last year.
Her music choices range from Kate Bush to King Crimson via Supertramp - suitably eclectic!

There is a fabulous production coming to the Gaiety Theatre tomorrow (April 27th and 28th), which tells the story of one of the greatest friendships of all time – that of Noel Coward, and his less well known muse, Gertrude Lawrence. The show also sees the return of one of our own leading ladies, Helen Power, taking on the title role. Helen’s career began right here on the Island, performing in shows at Ballakermeen, being part of the Christine Wild Theatre School and landing many a role on the Gaiety Theatre Stage. Christy caught up with her on the phone en route to the Island, to find out about the show and her fantastic career so far.

Multi-award winning London architect Hannah Corlett returns to the Island this week (April 6th), to speak about contemporary architecture as part of the Isle of Architecture season. Hannah, who went to school at St Ninians High School, is Founder and Director of London architecture studio ASSEMBLAGE. Key projects for her company have included a major regeneration scheme for a Holy City in Iraq, winning the scheme for the United Nations Agency for Human Settlements in 2011, and winning the competition to design the New Iraq Parliament in 2012.
Christy spoke with her from her London Office, just before she rapidly packed a case to fly over for the talk. ‘The painters are in’... ‘Aunty Flo is back’... or maybe you’re more of a traditional ‘it’s the time of the month again’ type?
We have always found it difficult to talk about periods. Period. There are some worrying statistics in the news today (16th March) confirming how awkward we feel about the taboo subject.... more than half of women in the UK have admitted to not knowing what was happening to their body when they had their first period; many of us attach the words 'shame' and 'embarrassment' to menstruation... None of this is healthy.
Well, today sees the launch of an initiative in the UK that’s set to turn the tide (...!) Christy spoke to two of the ladies from Loose Women – Nadia Sawalha and Kaye Adams – famous for their frank discussions on TV about taboo subjects along with Jade Dalrymple, who teaches Year 6 pupils; Jade is part of the new Betty for Schools initiative, and feels schools need to talk about the subject as early as possible.

On Friday 10th March we were joined by a woman of many talents – an architect, conservation officer, musician, renowned singer, a composer, a watercolour artist and much more; she loves walking in the Manx countryside, and a good massage (presumably needed after tackling some of our more challenging terrain), and she is a very proud mum to three successful children.
She spoke about her early childhood on the Isle of Man, painting a wonderful picture of a very different time; talked about growing up with music all around her and the difficult decision to choose architecture over opera; told us the story of how she very nearly didn't end up singing with Mannin Folk; about the challenges and often sad surprises of working in the public housing sector; and so much more.

Diabetes can affect anyone, of either gender, at any age and – until it’s managed – it can be scary and somewhat debilitating. We were joined by lead diabetes nurse Janet Clark, podiatrist Julie Maddrell and 17 year old Type 1 Diabetic Anna Clarke-Smith along with her dad Paul Clarke; through them, we found out what diabetes is, how it affects those that have it and how it can be managed, so that people with the condition can lead a full and normal life.
We had so many questions for them that we ran out of time, but they all offered to stay behind after the show to record this exclusive extra content.

We had an incredible reaction to our interview with Ed Oldham recently about male mental health issues, so decided today to re-play a small section of a truly inspiring interview we did a year ago with a remarkable young woman by the name of Katy Myers. This is the full piece.
On the surface, Katy seems every bit the success story – she was accepted on the MannSat programme to go to NASA’ Space School in Houston to design a mission to Mars; she is an excellent artist, now taking commissions for her work; her social media posts are intelligent, poignant and often very funny – not the kind of person you would think of having challenges with mental health.
And yet, Katy has battled with this for several years – it's a condition which got worse when she went to University. Bravely, she decided to share her experiences in the hope that it would help others, so began broadcasting her life on a dedicated YouTube channel.
Since we recorded this piece, Katy has messaged us to tell us she is soon to be off all medication as she has improved considerably – which is of course fantastic news!

The theme for this year is ‘How Can Life Go On’, and the organisers behind HMD 2017 are asking us to stop and think about how we behave to people whose stories we may not know - and to listen and share the stories of those who survived so that we can learn from their experiences.
Christy had the privilege this morning of speaking with one such survivor – Janine Webber, along with Sami Abrams from the Holocaust Educational Trust. She began by asking Sami what this significance of January 27th was and why it was chosen as the day to mark the memorial.
Some of you may have noticed a familiar face – and rather loud voice – on your television sets last week, as Manxman James Whittle showed off his building skills and big personality on the Channel 4 programme ‘Restoration Man’.
Despite being the featured character and almost single handedly restoring the North Yorkshire Filtration Plant for his brother and father in law, he vanished from the programme before the build was complete – which led to viewers across the UK hammering the hashtag ‘bringbackjimmy!’ on social media. Picking up on the excitement, within hours of the show ending the Express newspaper had released an article titled ‘Viewers demand builder takes over the show’, saying 'Surely Jimmy will get his own building programme? This guy is glorious!'
Well, he is back – at least, on the Isle of Man – working on a building in the heart of Douglas. Christy caught up with him to ask him what it had been like being a TV star for a night – and he revealed that this may not be the end of his TV career...
