Addiction to pornography is slowly becoming an epidemic. Daniel Casadio is a local youth/social worker in Northbridge and stopped by the studio to have a chat about how we can combat the addiction to porn. Our weekly guest, Dr Patrick Jones from Perth Psychologists phoned into the Drive show yesterday to have a discussion about mindfulness and some useful ways we can stop our fixation on scenarios that make us anxious.
Dr Jones (and Lachlan) made some valid points that stuck out for some of the fam...-Mindfulness is our ability not to be distracted by certain thoughts that take us away/distract us from what we are doing. Negative thoughts create stress.-Thoughts get stuck in our head, when fixating on something. For example, sometimes we go through scenarios (that make us anxious) 10 times before doing it/not doing it. Each time there may be different outcomes.-95-98% of life is in transition between goal A and goal B. 1-2% is spent 'relaxing', after completing the goal.-Mindfulness kick is to get us in the moment, not in the future. People with a more anxious profile, are generally more in 'future mode'. Mindfulness is about trying to get us in 'present mode'.

We do not encourage violence, but what can we do if a bully does not listen to us when asking to stop and gesturing that we do not appreciate their actions? Sonya from Kanga Karate talked to us about what we can do if the bully is insisting on getting 'physical'. How can we respond? Who can we talk to? How can we get out as quick as possible?1. If you're in a school situation and you're cornered - Start using your voice. Cause a 'scene' and create space between you and the bully. Don't scream or squeal. Statements we can use: 'Look, I don't wanna do this', 'Leave me alone', 'I don't understand what is going on'. 2. Read the bully's body language. What are they doing? Are they coming towards you or looking around? Bullies DO NOT want the attention. Remember to keep calm, use your voice and move back. Get into that safe space. 3. Where are the bully's hands? If their hands are coming up into a fist position, then you know their malicious intent or if they're waving their arms around or looking awkward. Keep your hands where their hands are. If their hands are starting to raise up, put your hands into a defensive stance, NEVER close your fists. You do not want to take their challenge.

What can we say to ourselves, our parents or mentors, if we have to protect ourselves? We never want to be in a situation like this, but we have to view it as self defence. If you feel guilty for protecting yourself, keep telling yourself that it was self defence. Go speak to a parent/mentor/teacher/friend/family member and talk about the challenges. Remember that you didn't start the fight. Mentors don't judge.5 SecondsYou only need five seconds of pain to get out. The five seconds of pain could be standing on the bully's toes. Give the bully a chance to re-consider their decision.Vital NumbersLifeline: 13 11 14Kids Helpline: 1800 55 18001800 RESPECT: 1800 737 732For more websites/contacts, visit https://www.youthtalkradio.com/vital-resources.htmlSonya talks to Jaxon every Saturday Morning about bullying and how we can protect ourselves, both physically and mentally. Loneliness is one of the world's silent epidemics, with many people feeling lonely, even when they have friends and families around them. It is perfectly normal. This morning, Perri had a discussion about some of the ways we can overcome loneliness.
1. Look into the possible causes for your loneliness. Understand why you may feel this way. 2. Seek professional help, if you need it. 3. Try small talk. From small conversations, bigger ones grow. 4. Social sport. Majority of people who play social sport are just there for the fun and to make new friends. With exams, tests, assignments and interviews being part of everyday life, how can we combat the fear of failure? It's something that holds a lot of us back and stops us from doing things that we really want to do. Well, Isaac had a chat about this and some of the steps we can take to combat the fear surrounding failure.
1. No Shame Policy: Be in a group of friends where 'failure' isn't followed by laughter, ridicule and embarrassment. 2. Address the Problem: Learn from your mistakes and understand how you can do better next time. Remember, there is always a next time. 3. Learn from your mistakes: Similar to step 2. Remember that failure happens when we cave in and don't attempt to learn from our mistakes. 4. Don't bottle it up: Talk to someone you trust. A friend, family member, caregiver or a teacher/mentor. 5. Question your fears: Are they actually irrational fears and highly unlikely to come true? 6. Focus on what you CAN control: A lot of things we worry about are out of our control and potentially come down to 'chance'. 7. Embrace the grey: Success and failure shouldn't be black and white. This all-or-nothing thinking can increase stress and anxiety.

Sam Anderson took us to Matthew 7: 24-27 for our Word of Fire this week.
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Tonight we said farewell to an individual who has left their mark on all of us, Dyana Ebian. Over the past year, Dyana has faithfully volunteered her time to bring positive media and good news to the youth of Perth. It's been a time of challenges and jubilation, as Dyana worked hard to ensure this station is known by all of our amazing city. She has inspired so many people, on and off air, with her positive attitude, hard work and love. We don't know what we're going to do without you, but we are so thankful to God that Dyana was lead to this station, as she has made it a much better place.'I have only known Dyana for short of a year, but in that time we have grown an amazing working partnership, but also an amazing friendship that I will never lose. To me, Dyana is my big sister, someone I look up to and someone who mentors me everyday. I remember when Dyana first walked into our office, she was an excited person who had just flown in from the UAE and dreamed of doing radio. Every since she was a little girl, Dyana dreamt of being a radio presenter and I am so glad she made that dream come true with us, she is a talented and dedicated radio presenter and I know the listeners of this marvelous station will miss her. I recognise Dyana as someone who lay parts of the foundations for positive radio in Perth, she saw my vision after 3 years of hard work and knew how to help. I am forever grateful Dyana, I can't thank you enough. Thank you Dyana, you are truly someone we all look up to.-Isaac Mulcrone (CEO)'Leave your messages for Dyana in the comments below.#youthtalk #youthjam

I was scrolling through Facebook this week and saw a post that read, 'If you do not speak up about this issue, then it sums up your agenda on this issue'. This was a reality check for me, my Friday night show is generally a program where we don't go deep into issues, but tonight we did, because it is vital to discuss it. As you may be aware, 432 Indigenous people have died in police custody in Australia, which is shocking and disturbing. Meanwhile in the USA, approximately 2,000 deaths were recorded in custody between 2003 and 2005 (stats from Bureau of Justice Statistics), which upsets me greatly. The fact of the matter is NO COUNTRY is immune from the spread of racism, whether it be police brutality or blatant racism towards people of colour. How can we help and shift our mindset? Well Clifton Hurt phoned into the show to discuss this. He is from Chicago and is proudly a black man. His knowledge and love is extraordinary and speaks volumes in this campaign. Here are some of the things he said:1. He is so happy to see young people attending the protests (to protest peacefully) and is encouraging more people to do so. He also suggested we talk about this with others, it doesn't have to be a person of colour, it can be anybody. 2. Invite your friends to protests. 3. Read books, watch programs that educate on this issue.

I was so happy to have Clif on the show, his wisdom and kindness reflects in the advice he gives.^IsaacJoin Isaac Mulcrone every Friday between 7pm and 9pm. Stream us online at youthtalkradio.com or via TuneIn.#youthtalk #youthjam
