Have you ever wondered what it is like to live with an invisible learning disability? Well then step into my and other’s world of Living with Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD). I want to provide a podcast for people with NLD or someone who knows someone who has it and wants to help improve their life. Awareness about NLD should be raised because the public needs to be more knowledgeable about it. This can be hard to do because it is one of the learning disabilities that someone can have without it being obvious. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jennifer8697/support

An insightful podcast episode redefines "wasted time" as a crucial act of mental autonomy, especially for those with neurodivergent minds. The host, Jennifer, connects this idea to her own experience with NVLD, explaining how structured "pause time" is essential for recharging and creative thinking. By balancing productivity tools with intentional rest, individuals can reclaim their time from hustle culture and live a more meaningful life without guilt.

Being neurodivergent often means navigating a world that misunderstands your needs, leading to masking and emotional exhaustion. Self-partnering—a practice of nurturing your relationship with yourself—offers neurodivergent individuals a path to self-acceptance, emotional safety, and personal empowerment. It allows you to honor your unique wiring, set boundaries without guilt, and live authentically without waiting for external validation.

This episode explores how the language we use—like “the migraine” vs. “my migraine” or “autistic” vs. “person with autism”—shapes identity, perception, and even the experience of chronic pain. Drawing from personal reflections, research, and tools like the Curable app, we dive into the impact of word choice on neurodivergence, stigma, and healing. Ultimately, we examine how thoughtful language can create distance from suffering, foster empowerment, and reflect the complex ways we define ourselves.

This is the second part to the interview with Reuben. It is about his teaching for math at a high school in Indianapolis, Indiana. I asked him questions about how his teaching dynamics changed before, during and after the pandemic. Reuben Benzel has been teaching high school mathematics for the past 12 years. He has a BA in Economics from Oberlin College and a MAT from Marian University. Outside of the math classroom, Mr. Benzel sponsors Innovate WithIn, a Shark Tank like competition for high school students sponsored by the StartEdUpFoundation. He participates in the StartEdUp Innovation Educator Fellowship. Outside of the walls of school, Mr. Benzel is interested in trends in educational technology and spends time with his 8 year old daughter Alice. I know I'm posting this late sorry.

I have many friends who are neurodiverse and have chronic pain conditions too. I’ll use some articles to support this episode and my own experience with this too.

Growing up, math was a constant challenge for me, and I often needed multiple tutors to help with homework—sometimes three in a single day. While overwhelming at times, their support eased my frustration and tears. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with NLD at 19 in college that I finally understood why math had been so difficult.

The topic discusses how many professionals, like doctors, teachers, and tutors, are neurodiverse or know someone who is. It suggests that if more doctors understood neurodiversity, they could better address challenges related to chronic pain, medication effectiveness, weight management, and self-care. The text highlights that neurodiverse individuals face different challenges than neurotypicals, and professionals who recognize this could offer more effective and compassionate care.

For me it was my accommodations I had in college. I was able to record the audio of lectures. Had audio version of textbooks and extra time on tests. I took the test in a room with fewer distractions and by myself. I also was able to have my ESA dog Truffles with me in the exam room. I used Kurzweil 3000, audio-noteaker and sonocent.

Today's episode is the start of year 5 of this podcast! Wow, those years went by faster than I thought they would. Here are some stats of growth from year 1 to year 5: I am thrilled to celebrate one year of my podcast! It began on July 17, 2020, with just 6 plays for the first episode. By September, my website had 8 views, and my Facebook and Instagram pages had 16 followers each. In August, Canada joined the audience, and within a week on Spotify, the podcast had 39 plays and 9 listeners. By November, I reached 1,000 plays, and in January, I launched a YouTube channel with 13 subscribers. Nearly four years later, with over 14,075 total plays, my podcast has reached 91 countries, all 50 states, and over 1,000 cities. I have interviewed 77 diverse individuals, making each episode enjoyable and meaningful. As a proud podcast host, I hope this platform continues to create a lasting legacy for neurodivergents like me.

Have you ever wondered if historical events targeted neurodivergent individuals without many knowing? It would be both interesting and appalling to discover if any neurodivergent individuals were among those exterminated in the Holocaust. I apologize if this topic touches on personal losses related to the Holocaust, a truly horrific period in human history.

Do you struggle with more than one incurable condition or learning difference? Or do you have challenges living with more than one condition or learning difference that are invisible? Do you have issues with there not being a cure for these conditions, diseases, learning differences etc. now or possibly ever?
I would say yes to all of these questions and that has been true for the past 16 years for my PTSD, the past 10 years for NLD and chronic migraines.

What is, how is and why is beautiful or a blessing in disguise? Why is it a good thing to be authentically you and not mask your neurodiversity? Why you shouldn’t mask your neurodiversity?
I’ve always had a difficult time being myself especially around people that don’t know much about me. I usually don’t hid the challenges that my learning difference and chronic migraine conditions present to my close friends and family because they know what it is like for me since they live with me and have known me for a while.

Part 2 for this interview and Jim's Bio is below
James Lange is a CPA/Attorney and the author of ten best-selling financial books that help IRA and retirement plan owners get the most of what they’ve got. The Wall Street Journal has endorsed Jim’s tax and estate planning strategies 36 times. Listeners should go to https://DisabledChildPlanning.com/Podcast to download a free digital copy of book. At that page, interested listeners can also leave their name/email address if they want to be notified about our June 18, 19, & 20 virtual summit.
Jim’s daughter, Erica, has a disability. Jim’s expertise with Roth IRA conversions and the impact of the SECURE Act on IRAs, disability planning, and legacy planning was critical in developing a long-term plan to secure his daughter’s financial future and improve his family’s quality of life.
He was quick to realize that his solution, with modifications tuned to each family’s circumstances, could benefit all parents of a child with a disability. Using his family’s journey as the base, Jim authored a new book, Retire Secure for Parents of a Child with a Disability, with two experts in the disability field. Jim and his co-authors believe the book is the best comprehensive financial resource for parents of a child with a disability.
Jim and his staff are also hosting a 3-day virtual summit titled Financial and Life Planning Summit…for Parents of a Child with a Disability from June 18 to June 20. Tatyana McFadden, one of the top paralympic athletes in the world will be our celebrity speaker. The three co-authors and a host of other experts will be offering educational talks over the three-day period. Participants can choose which of the sessions they would like to attend. Many will also be followed with Q&A sessions. And best of all, everyone can enjoy the talks from the comfort of their own living room. To receive updates on our June 18th – 20th Financial and Life Planning Summit, go to https://DisabledChildPlanning.com/June.

Did you know that there is a link between neurodivergence and being hyperbolic? Have you heard of why NVLD isn’t in the DSM? And why is the name changing to DVSD or Development Visual Spatial Disorder? Why isn’t there one agreed upon definition for NVLD or DVSD? We’ll be exploring these topics today. The songs I referenced were "Walking Miracles" and "Do Something," by Matthew West.

Do you often have challenges with not questioning whether a social interaction went well or not because of your inner critic? Does your inner critic stop you from creating new relationships because you remember the last time you did that and how it turned out? Or maybe you’re hesitant to go deeper into an existing relationship because you like the status of it and don’t want to ruin it?

Nonverbal Learning Disability is a learning challenge that makes it more difficult for individuals to process nonverbal information. This includes understanding things like body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, social cues, hand signals, and other behaviors that make up the bulk of social interaction. NLD or NVLD also has physical challenges such as impaired fine motor skills and lower visual-spatial awareness. People with NLD can also process information more slowly which makes it difficult to do things like mental math, retain information, and think abstractly.

Today’s episode is inspired by some articles that I read recently and feelings that I’ve been wrestling or struggling with over my whole life since I was diagnosed as NVLDer, PTSDer, and chronic migraine warrior.

Have you ever thought you lost something that was really valuable, precious, or meaningful to you? If so I hope you were able to find it when you least expected it. When you are trying to find it do you tend to tear the room apart looking for it and then get frustrated when you don’t find it? And even more so, when you realize the mess you made and have to put everything back where it belonged? I can think of many times when this has happened to myself.

Do you censor your thoughts before they become sentences so that they sound ‘okay,’ ‘normal’ or ‘good’ to you once you speak? Whether you’re a neurotypical or neurodivergent, I’m sure we all do this to different degrees. I think this might be one of the causes of the migraines I have because I tend to overthink and make situations more complicated then they usually are too often.

Do you ever get so tired of explaining yourself to others because of being ND? Even to the ones you know want to help you?
I don’t know about you but I often get tired of explaining what I’m trying to say to someone else because sometimes it’s hard for myself to understand it. I’m trying to say that sometimes I have a hard time speaking and putting my thoughts into words. I’m not sure if this is a symptom of NLD or something else.

Today we’re going to talk about one of the expressions that I feel is meaningless to me as a neurodivergent. That expression is “quit while you’re ahead.” Have you ever heard this expression before and thought I’m not ahead I’m behind? Or realized that you better quit before you get into trouble or in bad graces with the person you’re conversing with because you would prefer to stay on their good side?

I want to talk today about being more than the labels we were given whether that’s short, tall, thin, big, smart, stupid, white, black or brown, LGTBQ+, neurotypical or neurodiverse. I don’t want to minimize these labels if you like them being part of you. But I want to remind you that they aren’t the totality of you. I hope that makes sense. Do you ever feel excluded because of the label you were given by a social construct? Or by doctors, therapists, professionals, or politicians? I know for me it’s often difficult to think of the qualities that I have that aren’t related to NLD or the chronic migraine condition I have. I do know that I am more than those two labels though.

I know I have done quite a few episodes on my learning difference and migraines, but I thought I would try to do an episode on how it is for me to juggle that, my personal life, my professional life and my podcast life. For those of you who don’t know me very well I have a learning difference, called nonverbal, learning disability, chronic migraines, which I’ve had for almost 9 years. And recently I have now five podcasts!

Are you neurodivergent and have a strong desire to care for social justice for people like you and neurotypicals? Do you care especially for those who have experienced more incidents than seems right for their age? For example, sexual abuse, abortion, comorbidities or being excluded by society.

Do you have challenges with staying asleep, falling asleep or remembering your dreams? Even before I knew I had NLD and the migraines started I had problems with sleeping especially after disclosing about the sexual abuse I had in my childhood to my mom. Now, I use CBD gummies, the “Sleepy” podcast, deep breathing, journaling, and lucid dreaming to help me fall asleep.

This episode is the final part of an interview with me and Barbara Arrowsmith Young. She is the creator of "The Arrowsmith Program of cognitive exercises lies in Barbara Arrowsmith-Young’s journey of discovery and innovation to overcome her own severe learning disabilities, a description of which appears in the article, Building a Better Brain or in Chapter 2 of the book, “The Brain That Changes Itself” by Dr. Norman Doidge. Diagnosed in grade one as having a mental block, which today would have been identified as multiple learning disabilities, she read and wrote everything backwards, had trouble processing concepts in language, continuously got lost and was physically uncoordinated. Barbara eventually learnt to read and write from left to right and mask a number of the symptoms of her learning disabilities through heroic effort, however she continued throughout her educational career to have difficulty with specific aspects of learning." As a NVLDer I love music because it helps me to cope with difficult past experiences in my life especially from my childhood and adulthood. I’m not sure if this is true for you as well if you have NLD, ADHD, Asperger’s, ASD or a different neurodiverse diagnosis. You may also experience as a neurotypical.

Have you had challenges with building on your vocabulary in academic, personal, political, and professional settings? Have you had problems on guessing the meaning of words based on the context they’re used in? Have you had issues with remembering the definition of new or old words?
I know I’ve had all of those problems and still do. It’s challenging for me to guess what a word means by using the context that it was used in but I’m working on it. It’s tricky for me to remember what some words mean because they have so many meanings for one word. This also makes it challenging to remember definitions of new words.

I would like to cover today the claim that has been going around since last year about Tylenol causing ADHD and ASD. I don’t think that this true because usually you are born diverse or not due to genes, head injury or an emotional trauma.

This episode is the first part of an interview with me and Barbara Arrowsmith Young. Barbara eventually learnt to read and write from left to right and mask a number of the symptoms of her learning disabilities through heroic effort, however she continued throughout her educational career to have difficulty with specific aspects of learning." Here is the link to her website for more information about her and program: https://barbaraarrowsmithyoung.com/.

Have you had challenges with your visual memory because of being neurodivergent? Have you had issues with remembering where you left an object like your car keys, journal, or toothbrush unless it’s in the same spot you always put it? Have you had problems with remembering how to drive to places that you haven’t been to more than a few times?

Have you ever tried to let go of something from happened to you in you past? Was it challenging because of you being a neurotypical or neurodivergent? Have you tried to forget what happened in the past? And realized all you can do is move on or let go at your own pace? I’ve been through all these challenges with NLD, my sexual abuse, family drama related to disclosing the abuse, my first romantic relationship ending, homesickness and being bulimic in college and my con artist experience during COVID.
I'll try to do the support group for "Empowering Neurodivergents," on March 18th at 10am (PT), please let me know you're coming via email. It's usually an hour long.

This episode will be about NLD and emotions. How I have dealt with them in my childhood, pre-teens, high school, college and adult years. A few factors that changed how I dealt with them was NLD, my childhood sexual abuse, love relationships, and being conned by someone that I thought that loved me. I do want to warn you that this could be triggering for you if you or anyone that you love has gone through similar things that I’m discussing today.
I'm sorry but I'll have to put the support group for neurodivergents on hold until I can work through some of my personal things.

Have you ever been annoyed or frustrated because your brain works differently than most? Or because you remember things differently than others do? Are you tired of repeating yourself because others forget things they said more easily than you do? I have had all of these experiences because of being a neurodivergent with NLD. Often it’s hard for me to describe to someone else how my brain works because I’m still trying to figure that out for myself. It’s also hard to understand it when you don’t know how to describe the learning challenge you have because there’s not one agreed-upon definition of it. And sometimes it’s hard to find the words to describe what it feels like to be neurodivergent. Sorry I didn't do the support group for Nuerodivergents today because it's been hard for me to do them lately with my chronic migraines and family drama.

Do you struggle with positive self-talk because of being a neurodivergent or neurotypical? Why do you struggle with it? And how do you try to improve it so it’s not so much of a struggle? I want to explore these questions today because I’ve been trying to have better self-talk ever since I lost 40 lbs for the 4th time in my life and am trying to keep it off. I also want to help encourage others not only neurodivergent, men, and women but everyone else and neurotypicals too. I include everyone because I know this is something that every human has difficulty with regardless of who you are.

Did you have challenges in college because of a learning difference? Or maybe you still do if you are in college? I did. My challenges were NLD, chronic migraines, and depression. I used Kurzweil, Sonnocet, and Audionotaker had extra time on tests and was able to use a calculator on math exams. Hopefully, I will be able to do the support group for empowering neurodivergents on December 17th from 10 am-11:30 am (PT).

Have you ever been ghosted? Treated like garbage by guys? Or learned a lesson the hard way? Have you ever been on a date with a guy or girl that you knew you had no connection or chemistry with even before it was over? How many dates did it take you to learn what you want and don’t want in a relationship? I have been ghosted by many guys. I have lost count of these times. But I’ve learned to let go quickly when this happens so that I don’t dwell in the past and get hurt too much by it. I have been on a few dates that I knew there wouldn’t be another one after that first one, because there was no connection or chemistry. It took me about 10 months of being in a toxic relationship with my ex to learn what I didn’t and did want in a romantic relationship. It also took me a year of letting go of what I had with my ex to learn those things.

This episode is pretty personal to me and it could be triggering for you if you have been sexually abused, had body insecurities, or had difficult experiences in your life. Have you ever wondered why your life is so challenging? Why did God give you such a difficult life? Or why do you have more challenges than others do? I have thought that before. But I know that all the challenges that I went through have made me who I am today. Those challenges include NLD, episodic migraines, sexual abuse, earning trust, radical acceptance, and body insecurities.

Do you ever feel lonely or empty inside because you must keep trying so hard to appear normal in society due to learning challenges in your life? I have recently felt this way because all my friends are already in relationships with significant others and are married now. I am happy for my friends that this is true for them but they have had an easier time with relationships than I have because they are neurotypical.

Have you ever had body insecurities because of being sexually abused or having a learning challenge? Or because of both? For me, I would yes to the second question and add that it’s hard for me to lose weight because of my chronic migraine (sometimes episodic) condition. There are some reasons I can think of why NLD, sexual abuse, and chronic migraines make it harder for me to lose weight.

Have you ever had challenges voting because of your lack of knowledge of politics? Not knowing exactly how politics and voting work? Or because your mind tends to go too black and white when you are thinking about the politics of things? I know for me it was hard to vote when I was 18 because I didn’t know much about politics. I didn’t know how much effect voting can take on society. I also didn’t know how democratic I was or if I was liberal.

Have you ever had difficulty advocating for yourself in school, work, or your personal life because you are neurodivergent? I had experienced this many times in my life, especially when I wasn’t working for my parents or trying to describe why I needed extra help from a professor in college. The accommodation programs I used in college for NLD were: Kurizewhiel 3000, Sonnocent, and Audionotaker.

Today's episode is about a new podcast I would like to start next month: "Shero: Be Your Own Hero." I want to empower people to be their own heroes and sheroes in their lives. I want to show them how they can do that in different areas of their lives by sharing my own and others' experiences with doing that. I would love to interview both females and males on how they have been their own hero or shero in their life and how that changed their life for the better. Please email me at sherobeyourownhero@gmail.com if you would like to interview or know someone who would. Thank you.

Have you ever felt alone, lost, or like no one understands you because you’re different from them? Today I want to talk about how it’s hard for people like me who have learning challenges to live in a world that wasn’t built for us. This world was built for Nureotypicals, not neurodivergents. This fact makes it hard for us to function and get through the everyday challenges of life, especially if you have something that is invisible like NLD, ASD, ADHD, Anxiety, chronic pain, etc.

Have you ever wondered what kind of career or job is good and easy for someone with NLD or a Nuerodivergent? In my opinion, a slow to moderately paced job, one with low to medium demands and one where you can be yourself is the right job for a ND.

Two years ago I created this podcast!
Have you ever felt like you are invisible? Have you felt not completely understood by others? Or dismissed by others because they don’t get what your learning disabilities mean to you, or how it has affected your life? I have felt invisible because of having NLD, being sexually abused, and having a chronic migraine condition. I have felt this because I don’t have anyone that I can talk to in person about my challenges.

Have you ever wondered how your brain is different from an NT because you are Neurodiverse? I definitely have. My brain is wired differently so I think in different ways than NTs do. And I tend to overthink things and make them bigger, more difficult than necessary. I have gotten better at not having them bug me as much though because that doesn't do any good.

Today's episode is about NLD and anxiety. Have you ever experienced anxiety while having a learning challenge or NLD? Or being anxious or nervous because of chronic pain? Or maybe you've experienced these feelings and are neurotypical? I’m usually anxious because of social situations and making new friends. I also feel that way when I have a migraine and am waiting to eat.

Have you ever wished you could be loved, supported, or advocated for more? Or felt like you wish others needed you or your help? I have felt these emotions due to NLD. Fortunately for me, I do have a supportive family that does advocate for me but sometimes I wish others outside my family would do the same. But how can they if they don’t know what NLD is? Aren’t aware of it? Or don’t know how to help me and others like me? This is why I advocate for myself and others more because I suspect that may not have enough of that in their life from the ones who they need it from the most.

Today’s topic is going about relief from chronic pain and how it relates to NLD. Have you ever felt a certain part of your body was hit by a seismic 2by4? Or felt unexplainable or indescribable pain in that part of your body? Or maybe a tingling sensation in your head? Well for me with the chronic migraines that I’ve had for the past 8 years it’s been yes all 3 of those questions.

Today's episode is about a past relationship I had. And the songs I named are: Following are songs that make me Think of Sam (“For Good” from Wicked and “The Rose” by Keala Settle, “Rules” Dylan Scott, “What I Like About You” Jonas Blue, Theresa Rex) “Miss Me More” by Kelsea Ballerina “Hard To Love” by Lee Brice, “Grace Wins” by Matthew West, "Never Chase a Boy" by Emily James, and “Caught in The Storm” by Smash Cast. By the way, I didn't make this be two episodes because I thought it would be better to have you listen to it once but if you want to pause and come back to it you can certainly do that.

Today's episode is about being made fun of and feeling invisible while having NLD. Here's the link for the article, "The Silent Majority" by Vivian, from the NVLD Project:https://nvld.org/speaking-silent-majority/.
The songs I recommended are "Invisible" by Hunter Hayes and "It Is What It Is" by Cloverdayle.
Here’s the link to the zoom meeting for people with NLD that will be in February on the 20th from 10 am-10:40 am PT: https://zoom.us/j/94687568942?pwd=STFKT0hpd0dtd2ZvUnRnV3UyK0pIUT09. I may not have my camera on for privacy reasons I'll only be using audio, it's your choice whether or not you want to do the same thing. I want to create a safe place for people with NLD to share personal things that stay in this group if they want to share them that is.
Want to make sure that people know with the last story I shared I responded because I have NLD not because of the color the people had that made fun of me.

Today's episode is about one's sixth sense or auditory memory when you have NLD. Some of the country artists I like are Locash, Maroon 5, Brett Young, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, or Carri Underwood. And some of my favorite songs are “Somebody” by LoCash, “1,2,3 Mississippi” by Brett Young, and “The Climb” by Miley Cirus.

Today's episode is about me not being anonymous anymore, what my pen name means to me, and some very private topics. Please be aware of the topics in this episode being triggering if you or someone you know has/have experienced sexual abuse, suicide, or being taken advantage of. This one was not easy for me to record so if I sound emotional that's why.
The song titles I mentioned were "Stand By You” by Rachel Platten, “Titanium” by Madilyn Bailey, “Skyscraper” by Demi Lavato, “Survivors” by LoCash, “Victorious” by Lina Hedlund, “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman, and “Warrior” by Demi Lavato.
