IQ Meets EQ Podcast: Recent Episodes

Jacqui Brauman and Ush Dhanak

The podcast is presented by Legally Wise Women. Being ‘legally wise’ is having the wisdom to navigate daily life, having more power over outcomes, and having knowledge about how things work in our system (whether that system is financial, legal, employment, political, social, etc). Wisdom also includes emotional intelligence. This refers to a person’s ability to perceive, control, evaluate and express emotions. The podcast advocates that learning and increasing emotional intelligence is an important determinate of life success. Women will feel comfortable in our community; they will learn, they will get answers, and they will be empowered through knowledge. We have frank discussions in plain English, so that everyday women don’t feel intimidated or silly by legal, financial and political issues.

Since Fran Pratt was a child, she has always been interested in people and how relationships work. This has translated into her specialisation on the company-client relationship and specifically the art of selling. Selling has been part of Fran’s life for over 25 years and in every industry, in small or large businesses, she has been successful. Fran loves sales! She also knows that for many people, “sales” is a dirty word because it’s been disconnected from this key relationship that you have with your customers.

Fran has completed a Graduate Certificate in Change Management and an MBA from Melbourne Business School. Coupled with my hands-on sales and business experience, she has a toolbox of techniques that she draws on to help businesses better understand themselves and their customers.

Fran Pratt created Metisan to bridge that gap, to demystify the sales process and sales people so that anyone can improve their sales performance. Her vision is a world where business owners both understand and respect their clients, understand how to foster this relationship through the art of sales.

She has a young family and bonus kids from her husband, and so also knows what it is to juggle personal and business priorities – always open and curious to learn how to try new things and do life differently.

Originally trained as a lawyer, and currently practising as a registered psychologist, Emily Knowles has a deep interest and investment at the intersection of these two fields. Lawyer wellbeing, and the issue of wellbeing amongst the profession more generally, is a cause to which she is deeply committed. After spending time in her early career clerking in both criminal and civil jurisdictions, she worked as a Judge's Associate in the Supreme Court before discovering and deciding that while her head was in the law, her heart was very much aligned with the human-side of the job. In time she finessed that passion to support the human at work : pursuing specialism in Organisational Psychology. She now devotes a considerable amount of her professional time and effort supporting an occupational approach towards wellbeing, amongst other solutions in the world of work. Her areas of subject matter expertise include wellbeing, leadership, leader wellbeing, individual differences (eg values and personality), culture and performance. Solutions are sometimes 'wellbeing specific', and other times the wellbeing lens is more embedded and integrated into other leadership/performance/culture work.

Emily currently consults with The Human Link (www.humanlink.co )

The poem Ush refers to: https://simpleandpractical.com/stages-change-poem/

Chapter I

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in.

I am lost… I am hopeless.

It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am in this same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it there.

I still fall in… it’s a habit… but,

my eyes are open.

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

Chapter IV

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Chapter V

I walk down another street.

Jess sought out other business owners to network with and couldn’t find a group that resonated with her. Her second business Soar Collective was created in 2014, to create the perfect space for connection and collaboration between regional businesswomen. Jess ran both until she sold 2nd Avenue Events in October 2015 to focus on growing Soar Collective.

She hit her first burnout in 2017 while managing her business, a part time job and 2 young children. She hit burnout again in May 2019 and took huge life changes to recover and ensure it didn’t return. During lockdown in 2020, Jess realised her experience, knowledge, and skills that had been honed throughout her own journey needed to be shared. So many people were going through burnout and looking for ways to navigate it to find their own way back. Jess knew it was her mission to help and The Burnout Club was born.

Following on from the last couple of episodes with Jacqui close to burnout, and Ush making hard decisions herself, this guest had just what they both needed to hear. Brigette Sigley was the ultimate superwoman juggling a successful business and family. Like many she didn’t see the warning signs. First came a brain tumour then breast cancer. She felt totally responsible for bringing in an income and providing for the needs of her family. Living by the hormones of stress had become her “normal”. Brigette realised she needed to find a way to live so she could be there for her family.

Brigette went on a transformational journey. Over a 4 year period, she trained with some of the world’s best health practitioners from both Eastern and Western Medicine. She researched the science behind stress and studied to become an Integrated Health Coach out of the Institute of Integrated Nutrition in New York. She also studied with many of the Masters in India.

Ten years later she now has that elusive life balance without having to sacrifice anything. Her passion is inspiring women to get off the hamster wheel and to reignite their life so they can experience more peace and fulfilment and to avoid a stress related crisis like the one she went through.

For self love month in February, Jacqui speaks with the author of The Art of Self Love, and the host of the Self Love podcast - Kim Morrison! There is so much more to Kim Morrison than meets the eye (or ear).

Tenacity is probably the first word that comes to mind. Her journey and all she has accomplished to date has all stemmed from her unwavering self-belief and her deep understanding that you must also take care of yourself first and foremost.

Kim set a world record as the youngest female to run 100miles in less than 24 hours in 1983. Cliff Young was her mentor throughout and still to this day lives by his ethos that success is 90% mental and 10% physical. She has used her running story as a direct metaphor for life – riding the highs, hitting the walls, pushing through the pain barriers, crossing the line and never, ever giving up!

Kim wholeheartedly believes that it’s about visualising your dream and going for it – regardless of the feedback you receive or the challenges you face.

In 2008 Kim founded Twenty8 Essentials, an organic chemical-free skincare and aromatherapy company with inspiring, online education programs around the fundamentals of self-care. She is a five times best-selling author, facilitator, Health and Lifestyle Educator.

In this episode, Jacqui interviews another pioneering lawyer, Zinta Harris. 25 years ago, Zinta’s very first case was a bitter estate battle that ended in court.

She saw first-hand how fighting over money completely destroyed a family and left a hard earned inheritance in tatters, after paying huge legal bills. That set her on a path to find a better way to help grieving families deal with the fallout after the loss of a loved one.

Zinta is a Brisbane-based Accredited Succession Law & Business Law Specialist, Collaborative Lawyer, Mediator and owner of boutique firm, Resolve Estate Law.

In contrast to traditionally run litigation, Zinta takes a collaborative approach where possible. Which means she prefers to work with lawyers representing the other parties to resolve estate disputes without going to court. This way clients and their families are empowered to reach their own settlements in a holistic and lasting way.

This episode features another woman who has created her own business, and in this case her own unique product as well. Like many women her age Suzanne Carroll came from humble beginnings and started out at secretarial school. She completed a business diploma and worked for various corporations, selling advertising for big brands. After many years (she won't say how long exactly) working in the corporate world Suzanne experienced severe bullying which resulted in a breakdown. She took mental health leave and wondered what she was going to do as she knew she couldn't return to such a toxic workplace.

Suzanne was reaching an age where it would not be easy to gain new employment, and found herself unemployed, but too young, with too much to offer to retire. Searching for a business venture she noticed that no one was marketing cooler bags for women. No matter how much she searched. she could not find anything anywhere in the world that she felt was stylish enough to carry her wine in. She decided to create a handbag for her wine, and came up with the idea of Cool Clutch, a handbag with a removable cooler pocket.

When the first Cool Clutch was taken to market Suzanne quickly realised that although her main focus had been wine, women were embracing Cool Clutch for its ability to keep food, makeup and medications cool. Finally there was a stylish cooler bag, and more excitingly it was combined with a fashionable handbag.

With her products patented in Australia, and patent pending in 38 other countries, Suzanne Carroll is determined that Cool Clutch becomes a household name in the new fashion category of the Ladies Cooler Handbag.

Julie Hyde is a leader of leaders. She’s a disruptor and a powerful people enabler who helps leaders make big things happen.

She enjoyed a successful 21-year corporate career where she led teams large and small to deliver strong results in a very competitive industry. Anita Bentata transforms the uncomfortable into living from our essence.

She is a speaker, author, events and online presenter.

After a traumatic childhood and then escaping relationship abuse with two young children, Anita searched for a therapy which could get to the essence so this never happened again.

Through Activating Artemis, Anita mentors women, and is the founder of Big Hearted Women communities, to reclaim emotional muscle and engage and live from our healthy, fierce, wise, loving, feminine energy. So we can engage in the world freely and confidently, creating a healthy relationship with yourself and others.
