Conversations with industrial and systems engineers about their work, ideas and solutions. This podcast will feature both IISE members and non-members who come from diverse backgrounds in both academia and industry to discuss a wide range of topics as it relates to their work as well as some off-beat topics that we think you, our audience, will find fascinating.
In this episode, we talk with Abby Lampe, a 2022 industrial engineering graduate of North Carolina State University. In June, Abby competed and won the women’s division of the Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake event in Gloucester, England. The event, which goes back to the early 1800s, has participants tumble down a steep, 200-yard hill to capture an 8-pound wheel of Gloucester’s finest cheese. Abby talks about the experience, how she applied her ISE skills and her newfound fame as the cheese-rolling champion.

In this episode of "Problem Solved," guest host Casey Spansel talks to two recent industrial and systems engineering graduates about their transition from college into the workplace: Annie Dorsey and Eva Gluck. Gluck was IISE student chapter president at Central Florida University and is now a process engineer with Procter & Gamble in Ohio. Annie Dorsey was also a chapter president at Auburn University and is now an intermodal transportation analyst for Walmart in Arkansas. The three talk about the challenges of finishing college during the pandemic, then adapting to work and learn in a hybrid setting.

Josette Cole-Pinnix, a data analyst with OpsVeda Inc., took a few minutes to chat with "Problem Solved" about her joy for returning to her first live conference since the start of the pandemic – the Lean Six Sigma & Data Science Conference 2021. She was excited to re-engage with in-person networking and the new motivation driven by intriguing sessions. She also addresses her love for coding (a topic that came up during Dr. Pyrcz's keynote on Tuesday) and the pride found in ISEs being "able to do it all."
While attending the Lean Six Sigma & Data Science Conference 2021, Katie Grzyb took a break between sessions to talk about her conference experience with "Problem Solved." Katie, who works at Michigan Medicine in Northville, Mich., gave her own presentation on "Continuous Improvement Team Adding Value Through Support During a Global Pandemic," which she summarizes in this bonus episode.
During the Lean Six Sigma & Data Science Conference 2021, Nick Comeau from Commonwealth Medicine took a couple of minutes to talk about his first live conference experience since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nick presented at the conference as well in a session called "Plan, Vaccinate, Study, Act (PVSA): An iterative approach to fighting COVID-19," which he explains in this bonus episode of "Problem Solved."

After Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005, Washington, D.C., teacher Liz McCartney and lawyer Zack Rosenberg wanted to help. Their efforts took them to New Orleans where they founded the nonprofit St. Bernard’s Project to rebuild homes and help victims recover from natural disasters. As the nonprofit and the scope of its work grew, they sought help from lean experts at the Toyota Production System Support Center to improve their operation, which they chronicled in their book, “Getting Home.” McCartney discusses the project and its ongoing challenges in an interview with Brion Hurley of IISE’s Sustainable Development Division.
