Kindled Podcast | Truth and Grace, Boldly: Recent Episodes

Haley Williams

Kindled Podcast exists to speak truth and grace boldly to cultural, theological and political issues from a Biblical worldview. Speaking the truth in love with boldness, we will grow to become the mature body of Christ. Love for God is kindled in our hearts as we are transformed by His power. May these conversations spur us on to love and good works so those near us and far would know that our Lord God is King. "They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony." Revelation 12:11 Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kindledpodcast/support

Join us for a conversation with Apologist Melissa Dougherty where she helps us understand how our society got to be so toxically subjective, why endless positivity is inherently negative, and how we can live with truth and love in these self-obsessed times.

Dougherty deftly traces the roots of today's social chaos back to the 1800s philosophy of New Thought. With clarity, compassion, and a bit of loving snark, she exposes New Thought's deceptions and shows us why it's important for our minds and hearts to hold fast to biblical truth.

The age of virtual work has arrived - and many businesses have found a welcome niche in stay at home moms.

They want to work from home, pursue digital or virtual businesses, and they are scrolling all day on their phones, many looking for a way to make some extra income and help make ends meet in this tough economy.

One mom who is part of my Instagram community and fell into one of these schemes shares her story today. It is a cautionary tale of something sounding too good to be true... and we know how that usually goes.

John Mark Comer, Teacher with Practicing The Way, Founding Pastor of Bridgetown Church and author is one of the most influential Christian teachers of this generation. But what are the influences that have shaped HIS theology?

This is worth looking into and Marcia Montenegro joins me to do just that.

Marcia has written several in-depth articles sourcing content from John Mark's own words and works to identify concerns Christians should be aware of with his writings and teaching.

We are the first generation raising kids that are growing up as digital natives: people who have never known a world not inundated with screens.

Krista shares her wealth of knowledge as both an expert and a mom like you and I, seeking to help model and shape her children well while giving them a biblical perspective on screens and the place they should have in our lives.

If you follow me on IG, you are probably aware that we are pulling out of our private Christian school and homeschooling after Christmas.

It has been a journey and I wanted to share this mostly for my own sake to remember my WHY when it inevitably gets hard. Hard is not the same thing as bad! And there will also be so much good. But I know that it will not be an "easy" task by any means, and this conversation is the heart behind our decision as a couple to choose different for our kids' education.

These are conviction issues and so the content in this episode is obviously conviction-level stuff - so don't be offended if your conviction is different! That's ok. This is a personal decision only a husabdn and wife can make with God. But I pray it will bolster and encourage other families who are in the same spot we are.

What is Biblical Counseling? What’s the difference between that and secular or even christian counseling? Who should govern what counselors can and cannot say in the counseling room? Why “biblical counseling” when there’s a whole field of licensed professional counselors who seemingly want to help people?

What standard do we use for helping people seek and find peace?

All this and more in my conversation with Ursla McCarthy, an ACBC certified counselor who attends the same church as I do. Ursla has a Masters in Biblical Counseling and a Bachelors degree in Psychology. She changed directions with her psychology degree after beginning to practice counseling in the prison system and realizing it was not effective for helping people truly change.

As conservatives prepare to go Target-free for June, it begs the question: how long will this go on? How long can it? Are people being inconsistent by refusing to shop at Target but continuing to shop at Walmart or Amazon? Or can we simply do the best we can with what we have to steward our money and resources?

I see both sides of the argument and have been/am on both sides, so I want to examine both sides of the discussion and see how we can all avoid error on both extremes of leaning too hard into "boycott or you're in sin" or "we don't have to do anything different ever" regardless of how corporations behave.

I think this is a valuable and important conversation for Christians to have, and it surely isn't the last time a corporation will serve a demonic agenda in this ever-present spiritual battle that wages on.

With Pride Month right around the corner, it's important for Christian parents to be prepared to engage with their kids on this topic.

Many parents avoid this conversation altogether or hope their kids won't notice - but is that really the approach we should take as we equip our children to live as salt and light in Babylon? They need more than our hopes that they will go one more year without asking hard questions about all the rainbows they are seeing.

In this episode, I share the structure for the conversation and break it down in a way that will help you not dread this conversation with your kids, and dare I say even enjoy it as you get to share the beauty of God's design and truth with them.

I break this down for ages 3-18 and will share tips that help you adapt it to your children.

KEY SCRIPTURES

Genesis 1:27 tells us God made humans male and female.

Prov. 14:12 tells us that a way seems right to man but the end is death.

Romans 1:18-38 gives a vivid picture of humankind refusing to acknowledge God and giving him proper glory.

Throughout the Old Testament in places like Leviticus 18, Leviticus 20, Genesis, and later on in Judges, but also in the New Testament in Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 6, and 1 Timothy 1, it is made very clear that homosexual activity is sinful.

In 1 Corinthians 6 and 1 Timothy 1, Paul lists homosexual activity along with numerous other sins: revelry, drunkenness, and all sorts of other sins, some of which are minor, some major; some less significant, some more significant; some even heinous sins. In Romans 1, however, Paul identifies homosexual sin as a more heinous sin, being that it is contrary to nature.

Children have a right to a mother and father. Them Before Us seeks to prioritize the rights of children in the culture and courtroom, the personal and the public. What a basic, foundational concept... but one that's been lost in the current cultural stream of thought that adult desires trump any possible right a child may have. From gay marriage to the transgender movement to surrogacy and designer babies, Katy Faust applies a strong biblical ethic of protecting children and their rights. Them Before Us strives to put children before adults in every conversation about marriage and family.

Ashley and I accidentally stumbled onto a very hot topic on Instagram when we both brought it up a couple months ago on the platform.

We have joined together to have a conversation on what we've learned - and what concerns us - after hundreds of hours of research.

Gentle Parenting is a popular secular parenting philosophy that has been growing in popularity within the Christian church. But is it biblical? Many Christians who practice gentle parenting argue that it is. Ashley Kintzel and I unpack our primary concerns with the philosophy and identify incongruencies with gentle parenting as compared with scripture's charge for parents and children. Tune in as we discuss!

This conversation is with Brittany Jones of Kansas Family Voice. Brittany is one of the lawyers who helped author the Value Them Both Amendment, which is coming up for a vote in Kansas on August 2.

This legislation is one of the first to make a ballot for a vote after the overturn of Roe V. Wade on June 24, 2022. This is a huge and hotly debated amendment in Kansas, which is set to become an abortion DESTINATION, because of a ruling in 2019 which interpreted our state constitution to enumerate a woman's RIGHT to an abortion (even though it does not.)

I hope you'll find this helpful and informative as you head to vote August 2.

In this episode Haley interviews convert and missionary pastor Mike Gendron, who compares and contrasts the teachings of the Catholic church with the 66 books of the Bible.

As a former Catholic himself, Mike’s apologetics and evangelism ministry, “Proclaiming the Gospel,” is a must-bookmark resource. Mike is the author of two books, Preparing for Eternity and Contending for the Gospel, and has published 7 Gospel tracts and a set of Gospel Cards to reach those who are perishing.

We cover the basic teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic church as it relates to many topics including: sin, salvation, communion/the eucharist, heaven, hell, works, righteousness, sacrifice and many more topics.

It's important to not only understand our own faith, but also the theology of religions like Catholicism which uses a lot of the same terminology but different definitions. Mike Gendron explains this and more!

Stephen Colbert says you should stop being poor and buy a Tesla, Biden refuses to drill on US soil and is brokering new oil deals with the East... all in the name of clean energy! But WHAT IS IT? And can it work? As gas prices increase and the Biden administration continues to urge clean energy policies like the Green New Deal, you might be wondering what's really true about clean energy. This episode will help explain the correct terminology we SHOULD be using instead of clean "energy." You're guaranteed to learn something in this one.

Ronald Stein is an internationally published columnist and energy consultant, and a policy advisor for The Heartland Institute. M Is Not for Mediocre

The narrative around motherhood today can be a real downer. Instead of rallying to uplift each other or rejoicing in what God has done in their lives, moms often connect over memes about how “kids are the worst.”

Talking today with Reagan Scott on how many Christian churches have become overly-politicized. This is due in large part to pastors on both sides of the political aisle partnering with political organizations and leveraging their platform/captive audience for political gain rather than preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

My audience will be aware of this practice in liberal-leaning churches over the last couple years, but today Reagan and I focus on how more recently, we've seen this phenomenon in conservative Christian churches, due in some part thanks to organizations like Turning Point USA's new program "Turning Point Faith" which aims to go into temples, mosques and churches to get people to register to vote, start chapters within youth groups and 'activate their faith in the public square.' We discuss the danger of this ecumenical movement to sharing the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

The political landscape is exhausting and intense - to say the least. And we totally get that breaks from consuming the information and staying on top of what's going on are necessary. (We take them too!) BUT - for the Christian, we have another motivation for being and staying engaged politically - and it's not so our political party wins or stays in office.

Listen in as Rachel Reeves, wife, homeschool mom and founder of Here Are The Headlines discuss what political engagement for the Christian should look like.

Doreen Virtue is one of my favorite modern-day testimonies. A woman at the height of her career in the new age - top bestselling author, going on Oprah, brushing elbows with celebrities and living a life most of us only could dream of. Yet, radically lost and without Christ -- until she had a life-changing encounter with Jesus that changed everything.

This is her story.

WARNING: This episode is not for young ears OR those who may be triggered by stories of sexual abuse.

This is the story of one woman who escaped a sexually abusive marriage to a porn-addicted husband.

This episode outlines her story as well as highlights the devastating effects porn consumption has on an individual and, eventually, their family.

Stacy is a survivor, fighter and advocate for women and children who have endured abusive relationships. She speaks to many aspects of this conversation that most of us don't realize: appropriate physical touch, where abusers most often come from, how porn changes a person's brain and, if unchecked and unhindered, will enable them to objectify anyone and anything as an object of sexual pleasure.

She encourages the church to RISE UP and offers many good suggestions for ways to educate and protect your family and children.

Today I am excited to share a conversation with former Baylor University professor Dr. Christina Crenshaw, who made headlines for questioning the Biden administration's expansion of protections for transgender people. A small but loud group of students called for her to be fired, and today we discuss all the intricacies of how

Many Christians rightly believe that they need to read the Bible but do not properly understand how to approach the Word or what its purpose is in their life. Understanding how to hear the Word, read the Word and study the Word is vital. But a recent LifeWay Research study found that the way Christians actually read their Bibles was much less frequent than one might think. Dave Jenkins and I are discussing why Biblical literacy is important and how to grow in the knowledge of God-- not just for knowledge's sake but so we grow in our love for Him.

Welcome to Season 4 of KINDLED! We're kicking it off with a bang. I brought my husband Joey on to discuss one of our favorite things to chat about: Should Christians engage in politics? How does our faith inform how we act in the world? Is it "ok" to be political as a Christian or be concerned with policies and presidents? And how do we do so differently from the world? We're discussing all this and much more today!

We live in an age that is apathetic towards God and completely opposed to the idea of absolute truth - so how do we as mothers raise our children to be not just counter-cultural but ambassadors of Christ - giving reasoned answers for the hope that they have? That's what I discuss today with Angela Mitchell of Raising Apologists.

Have you heard things like: "go with Jesus" "Jesus' words are more authoritative than anyone else in the Bible" "Paul was a little preachy, go with Jesus on this one" ?? These are all cunning examples of Red-Letter Christianity - the belief that Jesus' words spoken during his earthly ministry "trump" all else in God's Word. This teaching and idea is getting more traction all the time amongst progressive Christians and is seeping in to churches and through teachers' words... we need to know what it is and why it's false. And we need to argue for the authority and supremacy of scripture - since it is all God-breathed, and ... surprise! Jesus and God ARE ONE.

We know we're supposed to read our Bible. We know we're supposed to spend time in prayer. But that's hard. So we turn to devotionals, studies, books, podcasts, blogs and more - because it's easier. But the problem with this as our only diet of truth is - we don't know how to read God's very words in order to know Him. The Bible is God's WORD, but do we treat it as such? Do we approach it with an understanding that we can not just know the Bible when we read it - but we can know its author? Kelli Garms learned that lesson herself when God stripped everything else she "used" to try to know Him or feel safe, and now she helps other women learn how to dig into God's word themselves and learn how to mine not just for truth - but to know God Himself.

After a challenging year for children's education, it's no surprise school choice is finally getting traction. Today Corey DeAngelis joins me to discuss why. Parents this past year have been sending their children to charter schools and homeschooling in hordes. Public schools are indoctrinating our children and receiving more and more funding, but teachers still have to pay for their own school supplies. Their unions are in the political pocketbook. Every parent should have the right to send their children to the best school for them, and Corey DeAngelis is here to speak on how we can make this happen.

Today I have an excellent conversation with Zee from @narrow.is.the.gate to share. She was gracious enough to share her testimony with me of how God transformed her life. We also discuss:

  • how we all start out on the broad road that leads to destruction, but that as Christians, we are not meant to stay on that path.

  • the importance of being in a biblical church

+ the importance of knowing what God's word says so we can identify lies all around us

It's no surprise that objective and absolute standards of morality were long since tossed to the wayside in favor of individual, subjective moral "truth." Recently, though, that individualized "personal ethic" has converted into more of a "morality by popular consensus" as product after book after person after brand gets harassed, cancelled, and condemned as "unfit" for society -- or worse. Natasha Crain and I discuss the how this change has occurred and she offers listeners encouragement for weathering the cultural hurricane we are in as well as preparing your kids for whatever is next.

Unless you've been under a rock, you've probably heard about the Enneagram. And you've probably heard people who are both WILDLY for it and WILDLY opposed to it. This episode is something you might not have heard before - the facts. What are the facts of the Enneagram's history? Is it beneficial for Christians in any way? Why or why not? What do we stand to lose or gain by engaging with this tool? Is it truly neutral?

I discuss all this with Ex-Professional Astrologer and New Ager Marcia Montenegro in today's episode.

I challenge you, whether for or against, to listen to this episode in a spirit of openness, with James 1:5 in mind: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."

Some say femininity is under attack - and yes, in many ways it is. But in other ways, we're handing it right over to the enemy because we have lost a right understanding of what it truly is, according to God.

What should we expect from a new administration in terms of public policy? I'm discussing that today with Christina Herrin, Campaign Manager for Free to Choose Medicine.

2020 brought the largest public health crisis in recent history with Covid-19, and as we move into 2021 with a new presidential administration, the future of public health policy is uncertain to say the least.

Christina and I discuss how government does a poor job at providing healthcare, the future of mask and vaccine mandates, how our medical autonomy and liberty is at stake and what we can do to fight for it.

This Fall, we watched as the term "pro-life" was hijacked from the movement and pitted against us with the argument that it was not pro-ALL-life. Is this just semantics? Or is it a sign the movement needs a rebrand?

Today, Gabriel Finochio and I discuss being ANTI-ABORTION, rather than pro-life, as well as the desperate need we have for church pastors to step up and lead their congregations, boldly.

SURPRISE! My Christmas present to you is here - a conversation with Alisha Illian on Perfection.

With the New Year just around the corner, it's all to easy to buy into the lie that if we just eat a little differently or wake up earlier or buy this or drink that, we can be better. More perfect. And that pursuit can leave us frustrated and hopeless if we let it be our ultimate driver and truth.

We're discussing what true Biblical perfection is and how to think about it rightly as followers of Christ.

We've spent the last 3 months diving deep into how Christianity intersects with culture from a Biblical worldview. Now it's time to learn how to take that knowledge to the streets of our relationships by discussing Evangelism.

Don't freak out - we're not going to be giving you the latest tactics for how to "win souls to Christ" with street evangelism (though if you want to do that, more power to you!). This is a very guilt-free and practical introduction to what evangelism really looks like in the life of most believers - and it's not what you may think.

You'll be so encouraged by this conversation with Greg Koukl!

For the world, belonging is turned upside down from the way God designed it. The belonging movement, led by voices like Brene Brown and Glennon Doyle Melton, tells us true belonging is found in unconditional self-acceptance.  In many ways, this movement isn't much different than Satan's offer in the garden - "Did God really say?" Culture offers us something it doesn't have authority to give - and that's what we explore in this episode.

Join us for this conversation with Dr. Jeff Myers of Summit Ministries on why Christians must demand justice in this election crisis. From Dr. Myers' article, "As the election crisis drags on and the news is filled with widespread reports of voting irregularities and fraud, confusion and chaos reign. America needs help, and yet people of faith are almost entirely asleep at the wheel. Many feel they did enough by voting. I’ve seen countless people post the meme “God is in control” on their social media pages as if to say, 'I did my part. Whatever happens next is God’s business.' This is bad citizenship and even worse theology." Dr. Myers explains why. To watch this video interview on Youtube, click here.

Abortion is the great, unexamined issue of our time. When we look at the controversies swirling in America, we see that underneath them lurks this issue of abortion, which is the driving force of what is going on, even when it is not mentioned.

Danielle and I unpack some of this critical and crucial conversation. We discuss why the conversation on abortion is changing, how information and science is on our side, and dive into a discussion of how many "pro-life" Christians are leaving the traditionally pro-life Republican party to vote Democrat for a number of reasons.

Politics. What are they? And what should they be?

This discussion is one many of us have been told is something “polite people” avoid. But judging by the state of relationships in 2020, what we desperately need is help understanding how to think about this biblically as well as discuss ideas (and disagree) without cancelling people.

In this episode, Meagan and I discuss what politics are according to scripture and investigate a new ideology on the left she has dubbed “critical political theory.”

If you’ve been wondering why people are cancelling grandma for differing views, this will help explain why.

What is the church? What purpose does it serve in the individual life of a believe and in the corporate body of Christ? With all the recent changes in how churches are doing service, offering livestreams, streaming podcasts, is there still value in meeting in person with the body of Christ?

The answer is a resounding YES from Pastor Joel Webbon of Right Response Ministries.

In this episode he provides an apologetic for why the gathering of the saints as the body of Christ (the CHURCH) is essential.

Who are we really and who do we believe ourselves to be? Do we need to go "find ourselves" or "recover our lost self" or "uncover our core self" or travel "the road back to you?" There are SO MANY messages coming at us left and right, front and back, every day. How do you know who you are and if you're really even yourself? It's exhausting to consider, isn't it?

These are the questions we are examining today from both a biblical and secular worldview. Our identity is central and foundational to how we live. It's also something God has a lot to say about - especially after He makes us new creations and we are made alive in Christ.

Natalie Gaines and I (@stopandconsider) discuss and it's so rich and full of encouragement.

  • What are the justice issues we are seeing in the world today?
  • What is a biblical definition of justice?
  • How does the world define justice?
  • Is disparity evidence of injustice?
  • What does God say about it in the Bible and is it relevant to the issues we're experiencing today?

Motherhood is full and glorious - but also filled with trials and suffering. If we don't understand the purpose of our motherhood, we will get lost in everyday difficulties and no way to reclaim perspective.

That's what I discuss today with September McCarthy, mother of 10 and homeschool mama. She has a unique perspective of generational motherhood with children spanning from age 28 to 8 years old. She has grandchildren and children of her own still in her home, affording her the perspective of a multi-generational mother and seeing how unique and beautiful our purpose is in God's kingdom. She shares so much wisdom and encouragement for those of us in the trenches. The murder of George Floyd on May 25 sent the United States into a nationwide cultural discussion on racism and justice.

There are many voices offering many solutions to the problems that ail society. But how do we look at this issue as Christians?

What answer does the Bible have for the sin and evil we see in society in both individuals and our systems of government?

How do we respond as Christians to the call of the world to "divest of our whiteness" and embrace the narrative offered by Critical Race Theory that so many (including many Christians) are letting guide the discussion?

This is what Monique and I are discussing today. Monique is the founder of the Center for Biblical Unity and a Racial Unity Advocate.

Pornography is the most destructive force we are facing today - and by and large? We AREN'T TALKING ABOUT IT. (Excuse me for yelling, this is kind of a big deal.)

Hearts are being darkened by evil, brains are being rewired by overstimulation and marriages are being destroyed.

Here's some stats for you:

  • 79% of Christian men who attend evangelical church regularly use porn.
  • 55% of Christian men look at it monthly and 1 in 10 look at it daily.
  • But it's NOT JUST MEN - the fastest growing user group is Women.
  • The biggest user group is 12-17 year olds.
  • 1 out of 10 porn users is under the age of 10.

BUT hold on --  there is hope, healing and restoration. There is forgiveness through Christ and we can walk in the light, free of shame and deception. Free of slavery to this evil that so easily entangled.

We have to talk about this, Church.

Whether it’s fearful side hugs on one side or sexual abuse on the other, both the culture and the church aren’t doing very well with touch. Singles are staying single longer, dating is wrought with angst over purity, and marriages struggle to not interpret all forms of touch as sexual. Even the Bible seems to have endless rules about not touching things. There is simply no place where touch doesn’t seem threatened or threatening.

But a curious thing happens when Jesus comes into His ministry: He touches. Jesus touches the sick and the outcast, the bleeding and the unclean.

These 10 Commandments are in effect - a new Ten Commandments. What’s striking is that they are far less about God revealing his desires and far more about man expressing his own—less Moses, more Oprah.

Yet each of these commandments is partially true. Indeed, that is what makes this list, and progressive Christianity as a whole, so challenging. Half-truths can sound quite appealing until you recognize their foundations and implications.

Is self-love really loving?

It's a question worth asking. And my guest Brooke Tabor and I go there in today's episode.

Our cultural moment is nothing short of consumed with this concept of loving yourself better. Self-love is the best love. Love yourself first to love others. And while we are sure the intention behind the phrase often means well, for Christians, it profoundly misses the mark of the kind of love scripture both promises us AND calls us to exhibit.

Today I'm airing the second part of my conversation with Marcia Montenegro. We're diving headfirst into the New Age and tackling some big topics like naturopathy, mindfulness, the enneagram.

Marcia explains the origins of these ideas, concepts and the enneagram itself, which may surprise you. To be fair, I have long loved the enneagram and how it felt like it explained me so accurately, helped me understand more about myself and others, but as I've learned more about its origins, I've taken a more critical approach to it.

But Marcia's biggest beef isn't that you identify as a "three" or an "achiever" but that the enneagram is teaching people to value experience over truth, a foundational teaching of the new age.

While I think there's plenty of room for believers to disagree on whether the enneagram can be "redeemed" (which tends to be the point of argumentation), it's important for us to take a look at the origins of what we engage with so we can rightly understand how we interact with them today.

The cultural moment we are in tells us grace and truth do not exist together. The narrative looks something like - grace means wholesale acceptance of all that someone chooses to do and the rejection of absolute truth - ie: they can do NO wrong. On the flip side, if you have the truth, you must preach it and take no prisoners.

But an examination of scripture and God's heart for his children shows that is not how we are to understand these two. They are inextricably linked and meant to be applied together, not separately, in the life of believers.

Sarah and I discuss how a right understanding of grace and truth frees us to engage honestly and lovingly, even - and perhaps especially - in challenging relationships.

It's a wild time to be alive. We have access to more ideas, more content, more leaders, more voices, more information than anyone in history has ever had access to. And that means that we’re going to have to have wisdom to know what to listen to, which direction to go, what to take in, what to leave behind, how to discern what is really influencing us when we post, how to just clarify our own motives and how to be led by the Holy Spirit and not just be swept along by this torrent of information.

That means we need to have discernment. But discernment is more than simply avoiding bad things; discernment actually frees you to navigate the world with confidence and joy by teaching you how to recognize and choose good things. When you learn discernment and develop a taste for all that’s good, you will encounter God in remarkable new ways.

Approval is something we all long for. We long to be found as enough, as acceptable, as good. In fact, it's not whether we will seek approval or not but where we will seek it.

When we look for it in the wrong place, the approval we find will never satiate our desire for acceptance. But when we realize nd truly believe that our drive to find approval is meant to be met and satisfied in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, our endless search for the approval of man can end. We can see that Jesus fulfills every desire we have for approval by doing what we were powerless to do.

Donna and I talk through some of the ways we wrongly seek approval and how we see in scripture that God is the only One who can offer sound and true approval of us.

As Christians, we know friendship matters. Go to any Christian book store and you’ll find myriads of books on the importance of community. But while most people are convinced of their need for Christian friendships, they are often confused about the problems and disappointment they experience.

What’s responsible for this confusion? For too many people, their friendships are very worldly. Following Jesus may have changed the activities of friendship, but the DNA of how and why they practice friendship remains untouched. These relationships may look good, but underneath, they’re merely friend-ish.

In this conversation Kelly and I discuss what true biblical friendship really looks like and how we can be better friends to one another.

We discuss:

  • Finding truth in the Word of God, first and foremost
  • Not placing our identity in our work, whether it's in or outside of the home
  • Learning to see other women as sisters in Christ with deep and profound similarities rather than first noticing all that makes us different
  • Putting work in its rightful place, not on the altar of our hearts but as something we do in service to the King - and being freed by that to both do it well and not be completely destroyed when we don't.

You're going to love my friend Alaina.

She is smart, beautiful and a great mother of three. But more than all that, she is resilient because she is anchored in a God who has and is redeeming her and her story.

Most might have been tempted to title this episode by the things that the world might say marks and even scars Alaina's life - infertility, infidelity, divorce, single mother of three, working mom.

But when you place your identity in a source outside yourself and your circumstances, those things lose their power to make you anything - for better or worse. These things that have happened to her have not defined her. They have not made her who she is, but rather have been the catalyst for her to lean harder into her savior.

And her attitude is not just a show - it's a choice she's made. Her commitment to her girls is not an obligation, it's the delight of her life. Her resilience is not just a show for Instagram, it's something she is modeling in her real life.

Nothing went as planned, yet she thrives.

Welcome to the Education Mini-Series!

In this introduction, Haley gives a preface to this 3-part mini-series in which you'll hear from 6 women who, along with their husbands, have all chosen different routes for educating their kids. You'll hear from two who chose public school, two who chose homeschooling and two who chose private school.

As believers in Jesus, we have the great privilege and responsibility of teaching our kids about Jesus and praying God uses our instruction to open the eyes of their heart unto salvation. As for academic education, I believe we have a number of faithful options when it comes to how our children are educated. There are any number of models and methods and many, many different ways people have done it over the years. But for the sake of brevity, we're broadly exploring the big three - public, private and homeschool.

The point of these interviews is not to offer a prescription for your situation or tell you WHAT to think but rather help you with HOW to think about this important decision. It's what I have wanted as my own husband and I have had these conversations. To hear some real, boots-on-the-ground experiences, questions and answers and encouragement to do the best with what we have and know today, trusting our great God to bring the harvest as only He can.

I pray it blesses everyone who listens, helping you to put this decision in perspective and put your hope in Jesus alone. I know I need this reminder daily!

Today’s episode is straight FIRE, ya’ll.

This is one of my favorites! In it I'm chatting with Maggie Combs about how God places grace-filled limitations on our lives as He asks us to obey Him so that the fruit of our labor can point to Him and not us. The day I interviewed Maggie I was really struggling with “the Kingdom of Mom” and our conversation was a HUGE grace in my day and week, reminding me of truth in a hard circumstance.

Perhaps you're waking up on an ordinary Monday, in an ordinary week of your ordinary life. Perhaps you feel forgotten, invisible or alone in your own particular monotony. The rhythm of the work week or being home with the kids. Perhaps, though, you've forgotten that the mundane everyday is exactly where Jesus wants to meet you. It's exactly where His love feels the most intimate and caring - in the unseen minutes of every day.

For moms, these moments are often the ones that feel the most overwhelming.

What do you think when you hear the word "homemaker?"

If you're like me, it hasn't historically been your favorite word in the world. But have you considered that might be because you have the wrong definition?

Lacey Rabalais and I discuss holy homemaking in today's episode.

We reject culture's degrading definition that provides us a definition that is something akin to the Stepford Wives. We examine how God and the Bible actually views our roles (men, women & children!) in the making of our homes.

These episodes are my most favorite to record, because it's just us hanging out, chatting, while on recording, which seems to always make for some of the most hilarious conversations.

Today’s guest says there are two things that make her smack her own face in frustration: 1. when we buy into the lie that spiritual things must be serious, and 2. when we don’t take our faith seriously. I was delighted to have a conversation with Caroline that spanned so much. From how we think and talk about our bodies to discipleship. She is real and I am constantly inspired by her honest and uplifting writing. I hope this conversation is the equivalent for you!

Do you ever get TOTALLY SCHOOLED by the Holy Spirit? Like, you ask God for wisdom, and He delivers and just spanks you with insight. Ouch, Lord. I get it.  This was God's kindness to give my thick skull the insight I needed on some questions I've been asking. I hope you like preaching, because this episode ventures in soapbox. But it ain't my soap box. This, friend, is about the gospel. And whose kingdom you're building.

Having a “calling” is great, but how do you deal when that calling leads to a more full or “busy” life? How do you speak truth “guilt?” When work seems to come up against our roles and duties as a wife and mother, it can be hard to separate lies from truth. How we as women deal with the tension between our work says a lot about what we believe and Jenn has some encouraging words for us in this episode!

Today I share a very personal story: Mine. It’s the story of a girl who believed work could lead to righteousness. It’s got sad parts, but it’s not a sad story, because God writes Himself into her story, again and again. From learning how to write at the age of 5, to having my second daughter just 20 months ago, this story is one near to my heart. I’m sharing my story not so you see more of me, but so you see more of Him.
