We are more connected today than we ever have been. Digital Devices, the web, and social media keep us in constant contact with updates, breaking news, and everyone’s latest activities and accomplishments. We are able to witness both the best and sometimes the worst of people, many of which we don’t even know.

And wile there are many benefits to being able to connect through technology, there are also a few devastating drawbacks including the cost of comparison!

We are in a series entitled “Discovering You.” The point and purpose of this series is to help you discover you – the real authentic you and the one God created you to be. In the first podcast episode, I talked about the essence of your identity including who or what we mistakenly tie our identity to versus where we should actually anchor our identity.

In this episode, we are going to cover the cost of comparison, and yes…there is a significant cost to be paid when we spend our time, energy, and emotions comparing ourselves to others. The cost of comparison is the thief of joy!

Time 2. Mental and Emotional Energy 3. Unnecessary Anxiety 4. Misaligned Purpose 5. The Wrong Goals 6. Distracted Focus 7. Lack of Impact * Instead of Comparing, Do These Things Instead: 1. Be grateful. Psalm 139:13-14 says that God created you, and you are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” We have been created with great care and reverence by God, who designed us with unique qualities and a specific purpose. 2. We need to go to God first to gain clarity about ourselves. I love this quote from Louie Giglio in his great devotional book Grace and Glory:

“God made you with uniqueness and specificity. He knows your talents and gifting. He wove them into you. He knows your strengths and weaknesses. He wrote down all the days of your life in His book before you were born. He knows how you’re wired, what you enjoy, and what brings you to life because He made you in His image, and He invites you to be a daughter or son of His kingdom.

You don’t need affirmation or acceptance from others around you – you have everything you’ll ever need from your perfect and loving heavenly Father. You can willingly take up humility in every interaction around you.” – Louie Giglio, Grace and Glory
3. We need to trust God’s feedback and guidance.
4. We need to embrace His love for us.Psalm 139:16 says: “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” God is the Creator of us and the maker of moments
5. We need to know His purpose and follow His path for us. We can seek Him and get answers to the key questions in life: Why am I here? Where do you want me to go? And what do you want me to do
6. We need to stop comparing ourself or our journey to other people and their journeys. This includes appreciating our strengths and our quirks. Change the words and your mindset from “If Only” to “I’m grateful”…and from “I have to” to “I get to.”
7. We need be faithful with our calling, even if others don’t understand it.
8. We need to ask for, surrender, and submit to God’s leadership in our lives.
9. We need to stay focused on the mission He gave us, not the one He gave to someone else.
10. We need to trust that the same God who created and called us…will equip us. Comparison can cause you to feel inadequate, but God will provide everything you need…to do the things He has called you to do and truly become the person He created you to be.

35,000! That’s how many decisions you will make today as cited in a recent study by Harvard Business Review. Decisions about what you will eat, what you will wear, and many other micro-decisions about your day. Many of these decisions are subconscious and become almost automatic for us. Other decisions are conscious and have greater importance like how you will show up to work or a game, what job or career to pursue, and how you will give your best and live life on purpose. We are in a series entitled “3 P’s to Peak Performance.” In the first episode, I shared the first P word and talked about the power of presence, or how you show up each day. In the second episode, I shared another P word that can help you perform at your best in sports, business, and life. And that word was Process. In this episode, I am going to share the third word that can help you perform at your best in sports, business, and life. And that word is Pre-Decide. We have conducted a lot of research on this word and have had a lot of experience in working with athletes as well as business leaders and entrepreneurs on the power of pre-deciding.

We are in a series entitled “3 P’s to Peak Performance.” In the first episode, I shared the first P word and talked about the power of presence, or how you show up each day. In this podcast episode of Monday Morning Moments, I am going to share another P word that can help you perform at your best in sports, business, and life. And that word is Process.

Process is how you show out as some of my athletes like to say, or how you bring your best to the moment. We all want the outcome or to realize the goal, but the only way the goal is reached is through focusing on the process to achieve it.

What is a promise? A promise is something that will happen as a result of something that is said. Our words should mean something to the person we are speaking to. And when we speak to ourselves through our self talk, we should believe what we are saying, not just quote shallow cliches that have no meaning or impact in our lives.

Words not only have purpose and power but they also have promise for others and for ourselves. As leaders and people of influence and in our own self talk, we need to speak with intention and commitment. This is the third episode in our series entitled “Words,” and in this episode, I share about the promise of words and offer three things that the promise of words should nurture and generate for us and for others.

What is the purpose of words? We are in a series simply entitled “Words,” and we are exploring the power, purpose, and promise of words. We use words every day both to talk to ourselves and to talk to others, but do we really understand why they exist and why it is important to use the right word in the right moment?

In the first episode, I talked about the power of words and how we need to think deeply about our words in order to have the best impact on the people you lead and influence. We also talked about how it is so important to choose the right words in your own self talk, because words have power to build up or tear down.

In this episode, I want to talk to you about the purpose of words.

Show Notes: While we could probably come up with many reasons for why we have words, I think this simple definition of the purpose of words is very practical:“The purpose of words is to help find courage, purpose, and meaning in any moment.”* * The thing about words is that they spring up from what’s going on in our heart. Philippians 4:6-7 is a great verse and reminder that we should not be anxious about or fear anything or any situation but in everything and in every season and situation we should be bring our requests – our fear, anxiety, depression, and doubt to God – knowing that He will provide a peace that surpasses all of our human understanding in every moment.

This is another episode in our series entitled “The Path to Peace: 10 Bible Verses to Develop Faith Over Fear.” In this week’s Monday Morning Moments podcast episode, I share more about this verse and its relevance in our lives and our mental health.

Show Notes:

  • Philippians 4:6-7 – “6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  • This verse offers a command with instruction, and the promise is inherit in the verse. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul wrote this letter a group of people in a church who were facing and dealing with anxiety, fear, and even persecution. He was echoing the words of Jesus who spoke several times about not being anxious. In fact, Paul was probably the first mental health coach as he often spoke about how to deal with fear and how to renew our mind to positive and productive thoughts. I have used many Bible verses that He wrote as the foundation for the keys to a championship mindset that I coach and teach the athletes that I get to work with.
  • Paul follows up this verse with instruction on what we should focus on and where we should direct our attention to in order to not be fearful. He says in Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”(NIV)
  • This verse provides a checklist to discern if we should entertain a certain thought, which ultimately leads to an action:
    • Is it true?
    • Is it noble?
    • It is right or true?
    • Is it pure?
    • Is it lovely?
    • Is it admirable?
    • Is it excellent or praiseworthy?

You have an enemy, and it’s not who you think it is. Many times, we see other people as the enemy. We see them as the person who annoys us or the person who is stealing our joy. We see them as the cause of our conflict and struggle. And while it is true that other people may be annoying you and causing major league “trouble” for you, we have to understand that there is a another enemy who is working behind the scenes to come against you.

As a part of living in a broken and imperfect world, there is a an enemy who is waging a spiritual battle for your soul, your purpose, and your impact. This enemy wants to steal your joy, kill your purpose, and destroy your impact. Yet, we have a Savior and a Good Shepherd who came to protect us, provide for us, and position us to live out our purpose all for the glory of God.

This is another episode in our series entitled: “The Path To Peace.” In today’s Monday Morning Moments podcast, I share what Jesus said in John 10:10 about this enemy, what the enemy is trying to do, and how we can find peace in Jesus.

+ Use or create moments that discourage and defeat you and keep you from having joy in the moment.

    • Point to your mistakes and say that given your past, you could never have a purpose or platform to make a difference

    • Create roadblocks and cause us to focus on the apparent lack of momentum in our lives toward a goal to try and keeping us from continuing to move forward through these moments.
    • Work in and through other people to try and limit our effectiveness.Leverage regret and shame over past moments
    • We have to realize that there is a spiritual warfare going on all around us. In fact, Paul tells us this in Ephesians 6:12, which says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (NIV)

Have you ever experienced a challenge or difficulty in your life? A circumstance so bad you didn’t know how you were going to make it through? Fear, doubt, and deep anxiety can creep into our lives causing us to stop, stumble, and/or steer away from the path to peace.

This is another episode in our series entitled “The Path to Peace,” based on an upcoming book project I am working on entitled The Path to Peace: 10 Verses to Develop Faith Over Fear. In this podcast episode of Monday Morning Moments, I share a verse that gives us the proper perspective and the right response to have peace in any moment…including the valley moments in our life.

Show Notes:* In chapter 16 of the Gospel of John in the Bible, Jesus communicates a bunch of things to His disciples…mainly that He will be leaving them and why this is a good thing. They are confused about this and wonder how this could ever be a good thing. They also don’t understand how the “Helper” that Jesus promises could ever be better than having Jesus in the flesh with them. At the end of chapter 16, Jesus says these words:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV) * Importance of a Proper Perspective and the Right Response * A proper perspective about a situation and the right response can help us move through challenging moments, discover the path to peace, and realize growth in the process and successful and impactful outcomes. The path to peace will be filled with trouble; yet, we can experience peace in the process because of what Jesus did on the cross and what He offers us in any moment. It’s helpful to know that there will be challenges so we are not caught off guard at any moment (Perspective). And it’s even better to know that we have someone who can help us conquer any fear along the way (The Powerful Response)!

It's a command with a promise and a truth that has carried me through many moments in my life. Comparison is the thief of joy, and it can lead you into a downward spiral of performance. + Feedback that helps someone else become who they were created to be and deliver their best confidently and consistently.
  • Great feedback is specific, timely, and relevant
  • Great feedback must always be aligned with the other person’s potential to be (Warren Bennis).
  • Great feedback balances positive and constructive feedback, not criticism which literally means to tear down and not build up.

    • As Chris Miller, a program director at UNC Executive Development, writes in his white paper, “Expectations Create Outcomes: Growth Mindsets in Organizations”: “managers with fixed mindsets often fail to recognize positive changes in employee performance. They are also less likely to coach employees about how to improve performance or to offer constructive feedback…This leads to a loss of talent in organizations.”
    • Focus on at least a 3-1 ratio and work to get to a 5-1 ratio.
    • Great feedback recognizes contribution and achievement. Process and outcomes. Growth and achievements.
    • Great feedback should help your team play with belief, trust, and confidence on “game day.” That’s the art of leadership.
    • Key Questions:- What kind of feedback are you giving, and is it helping your team develop and become their best?

This was the first time that a 6A school won back-to-back state championships, and Aidan was a big part of this. We are starting a new series on JOY. Over the years, I have spoken to many groups, teams, and businesses about the power of “playing with joy.” Also, in my book Moments: Making Your Life Count For What Matters Most, Enjoy the Moment is one of the key principles for making the most of your moments and being fully engaged and present in life.

As we kick off this series, I think it is very important to know your enemy, or the thing or person that is trying to steal your joy. It is also important to know how we contribute to outside forces that try to steal our joy by choosing to focus on the wrong things. I often see athletes as well as other leaders in business and life tie their identity to their performance. They falsely believe that who they are is what they do, which results in often playing for acceptance and validation. It can also lead them to striving to derive confidence from external things that they may not have control over. Their self talk is based on "If-Then" scenarios and looks like this:

"If I make this shot Then I will feel good about myself." "If we win this game, Then I will feel good about myself."

I speak to a lot of people including business leaders and athletes about leadership and performance in sports, business, and life. On February 12, 2023, Patrick Mahomes became one of only 3 athletes in any sport to win 2 league Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards and 2 Championship MVP awards in his first 6 years. Be strong and courageous! We hear that so often from coaches, leaders, our parents, teammates, and friends. It is communicated in different ways, but the central message is the same: Do not fear, and be courageous!

The Bible has a lot to say about dealing with fear, doubt, and anxiety, and God communicates the very same message to leaders throughout the Bible not only as encouragement but as a command. See also the conversations He had with Moses and Joshua in Exodus 3 and Joshua 1:9. I think we can often misconstrue His command as something we have to do on our own. It’s almost as if we miss the last half of the sentence where God gives us the key to being strong and courageous, which is in and through Him. The truth that He is with us preparing the way and being present every step of the way should give us hope and trust that we can be strong and courageous in every moment.

We sometimes get defeated by probability thinking, worrying about the odds of winning or achieving an outcome based on factors we cannot control and the likelihood of it not happening. "This team is better and faster than we are." "I can't achieve this dream or goal, because it's too hard." "I have never done this before; therefore, I cannot do it now."

When a plane circles endlessly around a final destination, it is called a holding pattern. Just like the plane that is circling, we can get stuck in holding patterns in our lives. We circle and circle our final destination or goal with no apparent attempt to make progress to reach our final destination. Pursue your purpose not a career or job. Live each day with passion and purpose. Make the most of each day. Be structured and disciplined with your time, and don’t just go through the motions. Be present in the moment. Don’t lament the past or worry about the future. Don’t hold back! Paul says in Hebrews 12:2 to lay aside every weight and run our race with endurance. We need to run our race. Don’t quit at the starting line. Persevere and endure the messy or mundane middle. Unleash our talent and best self and finish strong!

Life is too short and too precious to be stuck in a holding pattern! And just like that airplane that is full of people who waiting to land, people are counting on you to get out of your holding pattern and land the plane opening the door for them to benefit from your legacy and investment in them.

Whatever category you fall into, you have a sphere of influence at work, at home, on your sports team, and in your home community. You just need to take the next right step to become an effective leader:

Listen Empathically

Tune in to what is being communicated. Rephrase facts and reflect feelings. Relate to where the other person is coming from and their perspective.

Encourage Authentically

Encouraging others should not just be a one-time occurrence but a regular routine. As a leader, you should catch people doing things right. Provide positive feedback in addition to the constructive feedback. Communicate in a way that the message is heard, received, understood, and incorporated into their lives. Be specific, timely, and consistent in your encouragement.

Position Purposefully

Design an environment for others to succeed and thrive. Put the right people in the right positions. Difference Between Chess vs. Checkers. Assign people purposefully for both your team and organization and as well as for themselves. Assignments should be more than just transactional (accomplishing a task). They should be transformational for the other person to grow and contribute the best value and impact for your team and organization.

We have time...but we only have so much time. The key question is: Who are you becoming in the the time that you have on Earth? The word "Chronos" is where we get our concept of chronological time. The word "Kairos" represents more of a concept of seasons of time or moments of opportunity. Both are important, but we need to make sure we don't get so caught up in Chronos time that we miss the Kairos moments in our lives.

Time is one of the most important resources that we have! We sometimes think that we have all the time in the world and waste away moments of impact and influence putting things off to tomorrow or even worse until that elusive day we call someday! We can also get into ruts where we just seem to run around the track or treadmill of life doing the same things over and over never contemplating if we are focusing on the most important priorities in our lives.

In today's episode of Monday Morning Moments, I share two words that define and describe time that can truly impact the way you think about time.

Chronos - chronological time Kairos - moment in time, season of opportunity Chronos - Where do I need to be? Kairos - Who do I need to be? This is your time. This is your moment. You don’t want to just run around the track never going anywhere but an endless loop. The key question for you and for me is: What are we doing with the time that we have? I love the way Paul describes this and encourages and exhorts us in the Bible in Ephesians 5:15-16:“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Paul uses the word Kairos to describe the season of life that we have to make a positive difference with our lives and to fulfill the purpose for which we were created. Our focus should be on living a Kairos life in a Chronos world…and I will talk more about that on Thursday during our Coach’s Corner segment.

Principles are natural laws that operate in our lives and in the world and govern the outcomes we seek when it comes to maximizing our potential and achieving our goals. As Stephen Covey said in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, "...success in any endeavor is always derived from acting in harmony with the principles to which the success is tied." In other words, if we understand and embrace the principle and act in accordance with it, we are much more likely to achieve the outcome we want.

The thing about principles is that they are true whether we believe them or not and whether we recognize them or not. You can choose to ignore and/or disregard a principle, but the consequences will eventually come back to haunt you. They can also play in your favor if you successfully recognize and align your actions with certain principles.

Jim Collins wrote a timeless classic book entitled Good To Great that many people have read. In this book, Collins explained about how great companies separate themselves from being just good companies. We all want control. We want control of our lives, our relationships, our career, situations and outcomes related to our lives, and we don't want to give up control. We want to be in the driver's seat, and we don't like others telling us "how to drive." Yet, it has been my experience that when I give up control and hold onto things loosely, I find that I can lead from a more authentic and impactful state. In sports, business, and life, it's important to review where you have been, where you are, and where you are going. Great teams and organizations do this all the time both on an annual and quarterly basis.

I think it is even more critical for you as an individual and leader to do a quarterly review to assess how you are doing and who you are becoming. If you have committed to some meaningful goals this year, the end of a quarter is a great opportunity to take a time out to celebrate and learn from the past, take inventory of the present, and prepare for the future.

Recently, I had the honor and privilege of interviewing my friend Sarah Jones, founder and CEO of Miss Jones Baking Co. and wanted to share our conversation with you in today's episode of Monday Morning Moments. Catherine is a frequent speaker for many organizations and businesses. She speaks on various topics in the area of nutrition such as: healthy eating, weight management, disease prevention, nutrition and exercise, and osteoporosis. She has also presented programs for Channel 13 News Health Beat, Channel 2 News, Channel 8 Midday Show and Fox News. She appears regularly on the LiveWell Network, a home, health and lifestyle channel owned by ABC. Catherine worked as the local dietitian for the Dr. Phil Ultimate Weight Loss Program and the dietitian for the 2004, 2008 and 2012 US Olympic Diving Teams as well as for Former President George H. In today's episode of Monday Morning Moments, I talk about the power of  a defining moment. You can't always predict when a defining moment will happen in your life, but you can be prepared for it. The sad reality is that many people never realize the opportunities that they have to unleash their strengths, talents, and gifts in the midst of an opportunity to positively impact others. Defining moments provide that opportunity for us, and they also present an opportunity for us to get very clear about our calling  and purpose in life.

Episode Outline:

Defining moments allow you to unleash your strengths, talents, and gifts in the midst of an opportunity to positively impact others. Defining moments provide clarity of your identity and calling. You can't always predict when a defining moment will happen, but you can be prepared for it. Preparing for defining moments involves learning from the past. The key to preparing for a defining moment in your life involves the following principle: "Focus on the Moment." To have focus in the moment, you have to "focus on the moment." Focusing on the Moment involves asking the following questions:

What's at stake? Who else is involved? How can I make a difference?

Other questions to consider:

Why do you have the platform (i.e. title, role, sphere of influence) that you have? What are you doing with that sphere of influence? Who is being impacted by your platform? How are they being impacted? How are you preparing for the defining moments in your life? When you think about your entire life as a “moment” in time, how have you prepared yourself to focus on the “moment?”

Grace is a wonderful thing when we receive it at a soul level and not just a surface level. Psalm 32 in the Bible gives us great insight and wisdom from King David who experienced the blessings of grace and forgiveness once he had confessed his sins. The big idea is that we must receive grace and forgiveness deeply, specifically, and completely in order to receive the blessings of peace, rest, and mercy.

Sometimes, we don't enjoy the moments in our lives. Now, I know not every moment was meant to be enjoyed, especially when it comes to trials in our lives. But, there are times when we are not fully present in moments that were meant to experienced and appreciated! When I wrote my book, Moments: Making Your Life Count For What Matters Most, one of the 6 principles that I highlighted was Enjoy The Moment. In today's podcast, you will learn why enjoying the moments in your life is important and 3 concepts for how to do this effectively.

Episode Outline: To enjoy the moment, I have found three key supporting concepts that can make this principle come alive in your life:

The journey is as important as the goal

Consider the following questions when pondering the concept of the journey:

What did it take for you to reach your goal? Who has helped you along the way? Who has been impacted by your journey? How did your journey affect your growth as a person?

Love who you are

Do you love who you are and who you are becoming? Do you let feelings affect your acceptance of core truths about your life? If you let negative feelings affect your thoughts and ultimately your actions, you will never reach the mountaintops that are prepared just for you. Consider the following equation: A = T2 + F Unpacking the equation: Our attitude (A) equals thoughts based on truth (T2) plus or minus our feelings (F). We must maintain a foundation of truth in our lives, and our thoughts must reflect these truths. You have a choice in whether to believe what is true about your life, but your decision does not determine its truth. As Dr. Barry Landrum, my father-in-law and former pastor, says, “The truth is still the truth even if no one believes it. And a lie is still a lie no matter how many people believe it.” What truth is God trying to communicate to you about Himself and about your life?

Love what you do

Do I love my work? What are my strengths and talents? What do those who know me best say my strengths and talents are? What am I really passionate about? Do my strengths, talents, and passions line up with what I am currently doing? Am I fully engaged in my work? On Monday morning, do I have a yearning that I MUST be there? Do I make a positive impact?
