Band of the Week: Eastwood High School Marching Band
This week, we pay a visit to Pemberville. It's home to the Eastwood Eagles and to our next Band of the Week.
The Eastwood High School Marching Band is a small but mighty group of 47 students. It's a family tradition and for at least the past 24 years, the Eastwood band has had at least one set of twins. This year, they have three sets of twins!
The group used to be much larger. A senior member of the band remembers when he first started and the drumline was twice the size it is now.
"It was difficult to cope with at first, but then you learn that just because the band isn’t so big, it’s still got heart," snare drummer Joseph Hohman said. "And I feel like this band, as much as any, has as much heart as any we had before. It’s really fun to play with these guys every day. I love it."
Kailin Wargo, an Eastwood senior, started her musical career in sixth grade playing alto saxophone. Now she's a field commander for the marching band and leads the Eagles on and off the field, including during parades.
The band isn't big, which makes Band of the Week even more meaningful for Eastwood.
"It’s pretty special," she said. "We’re sort of a small, small school. We don’t get as much attention as the bigger schools in our area. So it’s kind of special to have that attention on us."

Athlete of the Week: Ryan Montgomery, Findlay High School
Although the sophomore sensation doesn't bask in his own numbers, they were still impressive. 333 passing yards and a career-high six touchdowns against Fremont Ross
FINDLAY, Ohio — "First and foremost, I do anything and everything just to win because that's the main goal," Findlay sophomore quarterback Ryan Montgomery said. "I don't care what the stats are, I just want to win at all costs."
Montgomery proved that in Week 6 of the Ohio High School football season, leading the Trojans to victory over previously unbeaten Fremont Ross.
"That was a huge win, we needed that win for sure," Montgomery said. "We didn't start off too strong, struggling in different aspects of the game, especially on offense. We didn't find a groove yet and this game we really found what we're good at."
While the sophomore sensation doesn't bask in his own numbers, they were still impressive. 333 passing yards and a career-high six touchdowns.
"I thought I played pretty well, but it's a team game. I couldn't have done anything without the other 10 guys on offense," Montgomery said. "My lineman played great up front, I didn't really get hit all game, the protection was amazing. Receivers made plays and just shoutout to all of them because I don't want to take all the credit because they played a huge role."
Head coach Stefan Adams added "You did see the highest level of competitor come out of him a little bit more than usual. He wanted to make every single throw."
Montgomery's talent has been center stage even before he reached high school. With two years still to go before graduation, he's already received more than a dozen Division One offers which include Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State & Toledo.
Yet, you won't find this quarterback settling for anything.
"He loves to work. I think he truly believes that everything he does will help him to be successful individually and for his teammates as well," Adams said. "I've just been super impressed with his ability to put his head down and work."
Effort that has lead to production and most importantly belief.
"I just love having the ball in my hands, I'm super confident in myself," Montgomery said. "Super confident in our offense and I know I can make plays, it really showed Friday night."

Band of the Week: Otsego High School Marching Band
The Knights under the lights are our latest featured band.
WTOL 11 Band of the Week heads to Otsego for week seven to visit the 65 members of Otsego High School's marching band.
“It’s like a whole new system and everything so we’re getting used to everything, but I feel like it’s been a lot of hard work and this is well deserved,” snare drummer Neil Amborski said.
Principal Kevin O'Shea shared some interesting facts about the group. Several members of different families take the field together each week. Four band members might make you think you're seeing double, because Otsego's ranks include two sets of twins.
The entire band has put in the work to put together a great show.
“During band camp, it’s exhausting,” clarinet player Sofia Ellis said. “It’s been hard rebuilding after a COVID year when we didn’t really march that year.”
Friday is a special night for the Knights both past and present.
"This week is our homecoming game," O'Shea said. "And we look forward to welcoming back several alumni to perform with us during pregame, halftime and in the stands."

Athlete of the Week: Adelle Francis, Perrysburg High School
In a league matchup against Maumee, the senior netted five goals, becoming the Yellow Jackets all-time leading scorer.
WTOL 11 Sports' Athlete of the Week is Perrysburg senior Adelle Francis.
"Right now, she's killing it," head coach Jorge Diaz said.
A swarm of goals has been the calling card for Francis, since she first stepped onto the varsity scene as a 9th grader.
"Rarely do I bring a freshman up to Varsity, but during the scrimmages prior to the start of the season, she was the leading scorer," Diaz said. "So, I said we need a weapon like her to help our team."
Francis added "I feel like I've grown a lot, not only physically, but game-wise as well."
In a league matchup against Maumee last week, the captain scored five times and set a new school record with 74 career goals.
"It means quite a lot to me," Francis said. "I don't think I could've done it without my teammates, my girls, because they played in a bunch of good balls. It's just a really exciting moment for me."
An achievement she doesn't take lightly. Knowing full well how quickly the game of soccer can be taken away.
"Last year, I struggled with health issues and I wasn't able to play with the girls and stuff," Francis said. "So, just being back with the team and being healthy is definitely a great feeling."
Despite missing games, the star striker still finished last season 1st team All-Ohio. A testament to her talent and a big reason why she's committed to play at Michigan State next year.
Before her trip up north, Francis is on a mission toward Columbus. Acting as a catalyst for the 3rd-ranked team in the state. Perrysburg Girls Soccer remains unbeaten with a record of 9-0-2.
"We're having a ton of fun," Francis said. "We click so well this year and we're all so eager to go out there and get a win, every game has so much energy."

Athlete of the Week: Mason Heintschel, Clay High School. In his third career start, the sophomore signal caller put up six touchdowns to go with over 430 total yards.OREGON, Ohio — A performance to remember in Week Three for Clay quarterback Mason Heintschel, earns him WTOL Athlete of the Week presented by Dave's Running!"It's been awesome to watch him," head coach John Galyas said. Heintschel added "Getting the ball to my playmakers, line blocked really well. Just getting the ball to my guys and letting them make plays. A lot of fun getting the ball to our playmakers."In his third career start, the sophomore signal caller put up six touchdowns to go with over 430 total yards. Guiding the Eagles to a 50-37 win against Springfield."Helps so much, being able to take that off my shoulders and just move onto the next week," Heintschel said. "Knowing that I'm able to put up stats like that, it feels great knowing I can do that."Galyas adds "What Mason can do as far as seeing the field and extending plays, we obviously saw it against Springfield."Clay's offense has soared out of the gates with Heintschel behind center. Averaging more than 43 points per game which has helped guide the team to a 3-0 start."That's what we wanted coming in, we wanted to have a great start and just keep it going," Heintschel said. "I didn't know we were going to put this many points on the board, but it's been fun."Hard to believe, with their early season success, that Heintschel is a first-year starter. Yet, it's easy to recognize why he's so coveted. "His composure and his poise for being that young, definitely impresses you," Galyas said. "Anybody who sees him, he's a pretty cool customer."

It’s time to pay a visit to Start High School, home of the Spartans and home of our fourth Band of the Week.Like most marching bands, Start students believe in traditions. Theirs is a wacky one.“Whenever we win, it’s fun for the band because have our little tradition," flutist Rebecca Consani said. "If we’re in our full uniforms we put our helmets backwards. It’s interesting to march with.”The 32 members of the Start High School Spartan Marching Band work hard to do their best for their team and for each other on and off the field.“Sometimes it can be family, sometimes it can be we want to rip each other’s throats out," snare drummer Manny Wagner said. "But at the end of the day, as long as we sound good, there’s no complaints.”

This week Jordan Strack welcomes in Southview first-year head football coach Steve Hardy. He's got the Cougars off to a 3-0 start and this week, they begin NLL play.
It’s episode two of the WTOL 11 Sports podcast and this week Jordan Strack sits down with Otsego first-year head football coach Josh Lindke. At age 29, he’s taken over a program that went 20-0 over the last two seasons. Lindke and the Knights are off to a 2-0 start this year, but they’ve got a huge test against Liberty Center this week.
This week, we head to Fostoria.The 104th Fostoria High School Marching Band features 51 students, including color guard.“It’s always the football players or the cheerleaders who get all the light, but now it’s us and that’s kind of cool," sousaphone player Alexia Coleman said.In December, the band is heading to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis to tour the city, march in the parade and perform with other bands at halftime with a special guest artist yet to be announced. When Fostoria went in 2014, that artist was Big and Rich.“We’ve put in a lot of work, so I really think we do deserve it," baritone player Chrystianna Branch said. In our first WTOL 11 Sports Film Room podcast, Jordan Strack sits down with Central Catholic head football coach Greg Dempsey. The veteran coach talks about his 23 years with the Irish and the future of his program.
Athlete of the Week: Addie Arnold of Bryan High SchoolIn the past two weeks, Arnold has thrown multiple no-hitters and had multiple game-winning hits, etching her name in Bryan High School history books.BRYAN, Ohio — Bryan High School’s Addie Arnold is one of the best athletes in school history. She’s already had a decorated high school career, but the last couple weeks, she’s taken that to another level.Arnold has already accomplished a ton in her time at Bryan High School. She’s a three-sport athlete. She is a major part of the basketball, soccer, and softball programs. She’s also getting it done in the classroom. She’s been in the top 10 percent of her class all four years of high school.“Beyond her just being a great softball player, she’s a great kid and has a great attitude. A great leader for our girls," said Samantha Fowls. "She steps up in those big moments when we need her. Obviously they’ve seen that in the past week. So, super exciting and she just brings the energy that we need.”Maybe the most impressive part of the last week was the thrilling 13-inning win over Hilltop. Arnold pitched 12 innings in the game and struck out 28 hitters. She also drove in the winning run with a walk-off base hit in the 13th."Being there for my team in those big moments. We needed something big to happen and I just stepped up to the plate and kind of did it," said Arnold. "And on the mound I’m just kind of thinking that I have good support behind me and so whatever I do I’ve got good defense behind me. Moving pitches, throwing different stuff, just kind of working. But if it’s not, if they hit something I know I have good defense behind me so it gives me a lot more confidence.”On top of that, she also threw a no-hitter in a game with 17 strikeouts in a game against Defiance. She threw a five-inning no-hitter against Delta with 13 strikeouts. Oh, and she also hit a walk-off grand slam to beat Edgerton. All of this coming within the last two weeks. So, which is better? The no-hitters and strikeouts, or the walk-off grand slam?“It was just a really big hit in the moment. It was my first grand slam ever. It felt really good. The strikeouts come more often I would say, so I think hit was more special this time," said Arnold.She was the NWOAL player of the year last year and she was first team all-Ohio. With the numbers she’s putting up this year, she’s on pace to receive those awards again.
Northview grad Luke Fortner selected by Jaguars in NFL Draft
Fortner, an offensive lineman, was selected with the 65th overall pick by Jacksonville.LAS VEGAS — Northview High School grad Luke Fortner was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2022 NFL Draft.Fortner, an offensive lineman at the University of Kentucky, was picked with the first pick of the third round.The former Wildcat was first-team All-SEC last season for UK and was given a 82.8 pass blocking grade last season, according to Pro Football Focus.Fortner also started 35 consecutive games on the offensive line for Kentucky.
Hitting for a Cause' at Total Sports in Rossford
ROSSFORD, Ohio — Young baseball players from the area took part in "Hitting for a Cause" at Total Sports in Rossford on Friday, all in an effort to help a local man working to pay off his medical bills.Each kid hit eight pitches and pledged money for each foot the ball traveled. They were doing it to raise money for Lupe Hinojosa. Over the last two years, Hinojosa has been battling stage three colon cancer as well as COVID-19. All the money raised will go to help cover his medical bills, a gesture Hinojosa was very grateful for."It means a lot to me. I couldn't do it without them," said Hinojosa. "I appreciate all the boys at girls at Total Sports for doing this for me. I didn't think anybody would do this for me and it was a blessing."Garry Isbell, director of baseball at Total Sports, says this kind of event is what sports are all about."It always brings joy to me. It always brings a sense of graciousness as to why I do what I do," said Isbell. Isbell says they have been holding events like this for 15 years.
Athlete of the Week: Izzy Granger of Liberty-Benton High SchoolFINDLAY, Ohio — With a toss of 146 feet and one inch, Liberty-Benton's Izzy Granger won the Division-II discus state championship last year. Back for her final season, the goal is not only to repeat but throw even farther. Her eyes set on the school record of 150 and last night she did it, shattering it with a toss of 154."My dad held a record for a while and it got broken and I asked him about that and he was like, 'Records are meant to be broken,'" Granger said. "I agree with that. It's one of those things where you do it and get it out of the way and you look forward to what's going on after that. You have to hit a mark but you have to keep hitting that mark. You can't just hit it once and back away from it."Izzy is the daughter of A.J. Granger who played basketball at Michigan State and also won a state championship in discus when he was at Liberty-Benton."It's not necessarily winning or 'I have this many,' or 'You have this many,' but the knowledge he can share with me," said Granger. "We were out here on Sunday just throwing and he was able to transfer what he knows to me and I think that's something that's nice to have."Her accomplishments in track and field only scratch the surface. The two-time state volleyball champion will head to Toledo to play volleyball this fall. But until then, her eyes are set on another state title.Izzy Granger from Liberty-Benton High School is our Athlete of the Week.
Athlete of the Week: Sydney Schwieterman of Springfield High School
HOLLAND, Ohio — The Springfield High School softball team is expected to compete for another Northern Lakes League title this year and one of their senior superstars is already off to an amazing start.
Last year, Schwieterman hit .430 with six home runs and she drove in 42 runs. At the pace she’s off to this year, she might beat those numbers fairly quickly.
Through four games, she’s 9-12 at the plate and has already hit two home runs.
“Rob (Gwozdz) always tells us to go up with an approach, we always have a plan,” said Schwieterman. “I guess my plan is to just put it in play and help out the team however I can.”
The team is also off to an unbelievable start. They’re 4-0 and they’ve outscored their opponents 50-0. Schwieterman is a big reason why they’ve had success early.
“She had an amazing year last year, she hit over .400 last year,” said Springfield softball head coach Rob Gwozdz. “She started out with two home runs already this year. You can see the confidence is just oozing with her.”
“You have to have confidence at the plate,” said Schwieterman. “If you don’t have confidence, you’re not gonna have success. I am pretty confident when I’m up there hitting.”
On top of being a huge contributor, she’s also a complete team player.
“Syd’s a four-year starter and she’s one of the most versatile kids I’ve ever had,” said Gwozdz. “Last year she was an all-district and all-NLL player at first base. We had a void in centerfield and she said ‘Hey put me out there coach.’ She’s taken right over in that centerfield spot. She can play pretty much anywhere on the diamond.”
“It’s a great feeling knowing there’s pressure,” said Schwieterman. “Knowing there’s people trying to take your spot is exhilarating.”
