Welcome to Episode 166. Let's talk about Losing Legacy from Dumb leadership.
Leaders are always on show.
That's one of the greatest responsibilities of a leader. Leaders are always on show. Leaders have to understand that because everything they have built will come crashing done with a single error, mistake, or crisis
Take Karen Williams, the Mayor of Redland City, where I live here in Qld. Karen has had a distinguished career in local government, being first elected as a councilor on 2004, before being elected as Mayor in 2012, 2016 and again in 2020. Her legacy should be of one who oversaw a lot of growth in the city in terms of population, and business while maintaining liveability.
Her re-election twice would stand testament to her respect amongst the local community and her popularity as a leader.

This episode is an edited conversation I had on the new WISDOM App around the learnings from lousy leaders and engaging in the dumb things we have seen from leaders.
Often we will learn from some of the worst leaders we have worked with, instead of the inspirational chest-beating leaders we often picture.
What have you learnt from poor leaders.

Welcome to 114 of the Dumb Leaders Podcast. Jumped onto Twitter yesterday and was so surprised to see Guy Sebastian trending. I thought it had to be something with the Voice where Sebastian is a judge, but no.
Two things happened to Guy yesterday. One was a TikTok campaign that presumed that he was the person that brought Covid 19 into Australia brought about from some social media posts that placed him in Wuhan in November 2019 and his admission that he came back with flu-like systems.
But that wasn't why he was trending.
There is a campaign called #vaxthenation here in Australia, where musical and other celebrities have joined together to support the vaccination rollout. With the Vax the nation and getting the live music industry back and operating.

One of the pervasuive thing that has occuured in the world is the de-evolution of leadership during this prolonger COVID crisis, especially in Australia. That may seem a harsh judgement for the political leaders who proudly proclaim they have kept use safe during this extended crisis. But the reality is that regardless of the strategy that has been used, the end is no closer. NO Closer. The states get locked down on a whisper of covid cases, WA has fundamentally become the new Hutt River Province and seceded from Australia.
As a leader, it is your job to lead by example. You set the tone for the team, and you provide your team with the motivation and encouragement they need to work their very best. Your job is to nurture and protect that team, so that they can do their very best work.
This is something that is understood by very few managers and bosses. Instead, too many people believe that being a leader or a manager makes them infallible – and gives them a kind of supreme authority over their team.
This is why they think it’s okay to utilize a “do as I say, not as I do approach.”

Have you ever been caught between two leaders assigning different tasks in a political power play? Being caught as the meat in the sandwich. Pecking order and political power play.
It's a challenging situation for any leader to find themselves in. And also its grossly unfair.
How do you prioritise and focus on the main thing in this situation?
This episode explores a real situation and the outcomes that was reached.

Welcome to 110 of The Dumb Leaders Podcast. Recently on the ABC here in Australia, i listened to an academic speak to recent research on how trust is low when it comes to government authorities. The decline of trust has largely been accelerated through the pandemic and the confused and ambiguous messaging around it. The narratives being portrayed in the media, the hard-to-find statistics, the agendas of the political parties and the human collateral that is hurting in so many areas.
And here is the mindblown news flash. We have always been distrusting of the government. Its now more visible than ever.

The world is deeply hurt. Covid has created a much greater impact socially than anyone could ever have imagined. The larger companies have been remarkedly unaffected, in fact increasing profits and market share have been the norm rather than the exception, governments and beurocrats have been untouched, while small and medium enterprises have been hardest hit, industries have battled through unscathed. while Tourism and hospitality have been decimated
And during these times, the social justice messages have amplified and the celebration of the oppressed has magnified. The narrative is open in som many ways telling human beings they are inferior due to privilege and the system.
Be critical in your thinking, ask questions and find your truth
Welcome to 109 of the Dumb Leaders Podcast, Your library of lessons to better your leadership, and today I am heading into a touchy area. Mental Health.
This week in Australia, the story of Brent Draper, a contestant on MasterChef Australia, pulled out of the show citing mental health reasons.
I don't necessarily want to go into the specifics, except to say that his decision has been lauded as being courageous. In fact one respected commentator said the following:
"My first reaction to his decision was - Bravo Brother. He was courageous enough to admit to the judge that the peer pressure was affecting his sleep, cooking, and pretty much everything.

Welcome to the TDL 106. Today I want to share a recent experience that occurred in my network, and I have labeled it the collision between Victimhood, Ego, and Delusion. I can't tell you, it doesn't end well.
Let's start by providing some personal definitions.
Victimhood, when you are telling yourself the story, life is unfair, it's always some else fault that you aren't getting ahead, that the world is fundamentally unfair and you blame the world for your predicament. You are the victim of your own story
Ego - can be healthy or it can be destructive, in this case, the ego and self-centredness is strong, but it's not founded on reality, it's founded on a delusional sense of importance, a delusional look at the value being brought to the world.
Mixed with the ego, is the sense of status. Creation of a job title that sounds important, but in reality isn't as. Calling yourself a senior manager doesn't make you one. Importantly the perception that perks come with title and self-importance, creates entitlement and an expectation.
Thanks for tuning in Check out dumbleaders.com for your library of lessons from lousy leaders.
Becoming un regulated with emotion can lead you to experience massive highs, and deep, deep lows. Un regulated Negative emotions can lead us to believe or percieve things that may not be true, and when this happens it will often lead us down the path of simmering discontent, and more often than not the path of simmering discontent leads to a blow-up, a crisis or a changed path or direction (like leaving/looking for a new job)
Learn the lessons from lousy leadership processes and build better leadership for you. dumbleaders.com
Welcome to the Dumb Leaders Podcast. Today we are discussing Confirmation Bias. And I will share a real-world example occurring right now.
Presently there is an post-election audit being completed
"The Arizona state senate used its subpoena power to take possession of all 2.1m ballots in Maricopa county and the machines that counted them, along with computer hard drives full of data. The audit is being conducted by a Florida company called Cyber Ninja"
That's the news. The simple facts around the process. Depending on what news source you tune into you would have heard some of the following:
This will indicate fraud of a massive scale
This unprecedented audit is undermining the democratic process
This audit will lead to more audits in more states
The man who owns the company unfounded conspiracy theories around election results
The Democrats attempted to legally stop it through
Why would the democrats stop it if you didn't have anything to hide

The world is seemingly a mess, and everyone seems on contradictory paths on how to resolve it. COVID has certainly created the perfect storm in relation to our differences and our approach to life
And now more than ever, our approach seems to be not of one for the greater benefit of the world, but one where we look for our echo chambers of like-minded people. Our thinking is swayed by the messages received, the stories we are listening to, our subsequent beliefs forged from them.

I've started noticing a trend amongst my clients and within my network at the moment.
A trend that has been largely delivered by the uncertainty that has surrounded us all in relation to the pandemic.
Of course, we have seen the rise of work from home and what is now being called hybrid workspaces, and in the early stages, I saw a lot of intention from leaders in maintaining a connection with their staff and team.

Hi and welcome to leadership lessons on the Dumb Leaders Podcast
Today let's look at the difference between a manager and a leader.
I'll look at this in two aspects
Firstly a manager is about process
A leader is about people.
Seems simple
Another chain of thought is that a manager controls, while a leader leads.
I'm thinking somewhere in there is the answer

Welcome to the Leadership Lessons and the Dumb Leaders Podcast
Today I am sharing with you a very simple message and one that leaders need to hear.
Leaders can often see themselves as built proof. They see themselves as the ones that lead the way, channeling their energy to keep the team on top of things and to get the best possible outcomes for the organization
We may have a belief of being stoic, of being the martyr, invincible and bulletproof.
It is great to see a changing of the guard in this respect. Seeing yourself as invincible is the short way to create burnout, health issues and ultimately make poor decisions from leader fatigue.

You may have heard that Facebook has been in the news here in Australia for taking the news off their platform. It has been a funny situation driven by a policy from the Australian government that forces digital platforms like Google, Facebook, and others to pay News publishing companies for the content that is shared on the platforms, so today I want to share my thoughts on the situation.

The world is a troubled space.
A military coup in Burma, we have the never-ending drama from the USA
We have COVD dominating discussions around the world. It's not enough to have covid running rampant, but now we focus on how the vaccine is being rolled out
It seems like every step forward to the world takes a step back.
And in an environment like this, it's easy to believe that not a lot matters, as you may feel helpless and lost control. And I would say YES- there is so much out of your control
And that's why you need to listen to this episode

Welcome to Leadership Lessons. Today I want to share some learnings from a leader I coach who recently seconded onto a more senior role to cover for a vacancy. The secondment was for a set time period, in this case three months with the potential to be interviewed for the more senior role.
Ultimately he was accepted into the new role, and during our coaching conversation we were working through the skillset and mindset needed to continue to be successful in hos new role, he volunteered his four key learnings from his time in the senior role. As a aside, the leader's name was also Tony and
So today is all about the four key things leaders should focus on when in a seconded into a senior role. Key Learnings:
1- The importance of Communication
2- Effective Feedback and the Power of Positive Reinforcement
3- Write Things Down
4- The need for self-belief

Our final installment of this three-part series of the lesson from a downfall of a president
Today is the final piece of the puzzle - the uprising at the capital and the inauguration
Before I get started I may just re-iterate, I am not a Trump fan, and what happened at the capitol was disgraceful. There are still far too many questions in relation to the uprising. This gathering wasn't a secret, yet for all intents and purposes, the police and security were woefully unprepared. Videos of barriers being moved aside by the police, protesters being let in through doors. A lot of this donet make sense
It's hard not to be aware of the incidents that have occurred in the United States since the election.
In a 3-part series, I would like to provide my thoughts on the occurrences and the language that has led us to where the world sits now. In this episode, I talk of the inconsistencies of the process and the subsequent lesson for you as a leader.

Events over the last week again find our valuable lesson for leaders like you.
As a leader, your legacy is important to you. As John Maxwell says when speaking of legacy, "People will sum up your life in a sentence, choose it now" And of course that means living in alignment to that legacy. If you want to be respected as a leader in a certain way, you have to lead a life in line with that.

It's a must. Leadership is influence nothing more nothing less and when we are in a position of influence, it really isn't about manipulation, pulling the strings, The most powerful form of leadership, the most powerful form of influence comes from respect which is driven by integrity.

Hi and Welcome. The final Leadership Lessons for the year.
Reflection and review is one of the best practices a leader can get into. And after the year we have had, it's more important than ever.
While many of you will be focusing on busy periods and serving your customers, others will be taking a break and resetting focus for 2021. It has been one hell of a year, and this year more than any other, people are saying to me, they are tired. Mentally exhausted. More than any other year.

Hey there and welcome to leadership lessons.
Today I want to share an observation that may prove dangerous for some.
Every leadership coach will talk about vision, desired outcomes, and goals as being important with every leader, and yes it's true. But great leadership comes with some caveats...
Obtaining an outcome is important. Being a leader with integrity is also important.

Change is dynamic and quicker than ever. And much of our change is coming through advancing technology. This is a place where Laura is incredibly comfortable, however, many leaders and business owners aren't.
Our challenge is to "get to the front of the line" in terms of technological change. Get to the front of the line. Embrace the advantages and positives that technology brings to your leadership and business. Embrace it, build a better business and/ or career. If you don't maybe your competitors will. Maybe you will be disrupted from outside.

Hi there and welcome to Leadership Lessons. Today I want to share what stops us asking the questions that we should Often as a leader we feel compelled to tell and direct. Our belief may be that we have the answers or believe we should have the answer.
One of the best ways, to create buy-in is to ask questions and allow your team to share their thoughts and opinions. But we know questions, and especially good questions are often challenging for leaders and business owners.
Why is that? Lets look at the Five Enemies of great questions, as outlined by Warren Berger in his book, The Book of Beautiful Questions

Today I want to share quick learning on blind spots. And as a leader how damaging they can be.
We all have blind spots. The Johari window is one of the first theories I read on the Blind Spots, but it's also used by me when doing DISC assessments with my clients.
"blind spot" – Information about yourselves that others know in a group but you will be unaware of it. Others may interpret yourselves differently than you expect. The blind spot is reduced for efficient communication through seeking feedback from others

Welcome to Leadership Lessons. We have had some questions on the DL Podcast, from many get some real awareness around becoming better leaders.
We had a question from Dale, from Tassie during the week.
"I've just had my performance review and the only feedback I really received was that I must become less of a manager and more of a leader and coach. What does that mean? and how do I show that I am doing it. I have a good team now. and really not sure what else I can be doing. Any advice?"

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, as I find great lessons in life. This one may surprise you. You may have watched the movie Baywatch, you know the one with the rock and Zac Efron in it.
You may have thought it was a piece of light entertainment, or worse than that. Maybe you haven’t watched it, or subjected yourself to it. It was never designed to win Oscars or be held up as cinematic brilliance.
But funnily enough, there is. A strong lesson in there.

Today, the growth we need will often not happen on our terms. Often. Sometimes it will, but more often than not it won’t. Often our plans, or in most cases our wishes, are curtailed and our greatest growth comes from things that happen outside of our control.
What do you mean by that Tony? No one had COVID in their plans, one had a crisis from a health emergency in their wishes or dreams, yet, the adversity we have faced due to the crisis, has seen many grab enormous growth. We have seen many individuals take a quantum leap in their growth. Yet this growth is also often met with absolute resistance.

Hey and Welcome to Leadership Lessons. Your hump day, boost.
Today I want to explore what happens when we stop taking responsibility. Stop taking responsibility for our own actions, our own results.
Because in life, it's important to take personal responsibility. One of the things that is developed when we don't take responsibility is we develop a victim mindset.

The first episode of Leadership Lessons on the Dumb Leaders Podcast, helping you be a better leader.
If we want to succeed in life and to learn from the bumps we all have, we must be able to face reality. Often we are crushed by what we experience, crushing blows when we have tried and failed.
And sometimes we look to escape reality. And as much as that may provide some temporary relief from our problems, we quickly lose our way. Its easier to go from failure to success, that it is to go from excuses to success.

We have seen some horrific events and some horrifice responses to events this past fortnight around the world. It all stems from the simple fact that we are not having the conversations that matter.
Tough, robust conversations are critical. The world is not binary, the world is not absolute. Change comes with conversation, understanding and empathy,
Empty Words on a Mat. Relentless, Aggresive and Team First translasted to a performance that was INSIPID, UNINSPIRED and SLOW. Words do not build culture, it is the accountabiity, the standards, the performance of the daily grind that builds culture and performance.

With so many conspiracty theories around COVID 19, prowling on the questions we all have, its not right to be spreading mis-information from un-informed sources on the nature and extent of COVID19. Yes we all have questions, but in due course the answers will come out and not by someone who has placed a tenious link between two unrelated events.

Paul asks " I have just had some feedback through a 360 degree feedback survey which I disagree with. How do I know that this hasn't harmed my career. The feedback I recieved from the person I report to was good, but peers at my level and some of my team, the feedback around communication wasnt awesome. What should I do to assure my managers that the feedback was wrong?"

Corporate Haze is a disease and a disease that infects organisations and the people within corporations. The haze I refer to are the almost constant rounds of refreshes, re-alignments and restructures that affect some companies. The seemingly endless revolving door of leaders, all transfixed that their way is the best – and the haze that comes from that envelops the best, nullifies passion and innovation and creates an organisation that lurches forwards and backs.

Episode 1-26 of the Dumb Leaders Podcast – Dumb Leaders Just Want to be Friends
One of the dumb decisions that is often made is the decision to be liked or the decision to uphold standards. Usually undertaken early in a career, when our skillset, our knowledge and our awareness hasn’t developed to the stage that it should.
As a young leader we often take the easy choice of wanting to be liked, and we are tempted not to push people into the standards, the standards of excellence that you know they can achieve and the standards of excellence you need to deliver as a leader.

BUT THE BAD LEADERS simply don’t care. They don’t care. The don’t take on the facts, they believe it is their right, it’s the way they manage. It’s the way they lead and don’t dare to give them feedback.
They don’t change and in fact often they get worse. That’s right they get worse because its their right. Its their right to lead the way they do and create ineffective team members because of their frustrating, annoying and inept methods in how they lead.
The live in this constant pressure cooker of their own doing, undermining themselves with their own behaviours. And that doesn’t change until the pain becomes too great. And when youre ready, we are ready. The Dumb Leaders Handbook – helping make you a better leader.

Episode 1-24 of the Dumb Leaders Podcast - DUMB LEADERS DON'T LISTEN
I mentor and coach a number of executives at varying levels and one of the biggest commonalities is their frustration is in communication. Unclear communications create the bed for confusion and that confusion leads to conflict. More times than most of us care to acknowledge. And most of us accept this as a normal cost of doing business. Poor communication that leads to poor execution which leads to frustration which leads to cultural impacts. Worse case scenario it kills companies.
On a last note, I want to share a note we received from Jonty after our last show. He described a tour from the GM of his company to his retail outlet This guy walked in and just made the whole place feel miserable.

In our last podcast #22, one of the more important podcasts on leadership here in Australia and has been our most listened to podcast yet…. It also was the podcast that drew the most venom from people as well. We had people saying we weren’t tough enough on the players, and then we had others who stated that we were too tough.
Which bring us to this weeks Dumb Leader. The Leader that doesn’t own or admit their mistakes.
Have you seen this type of leader. Openly and brazenly, never admitting fault and never owning their errors, never accepting accountability never stepping forward.

Australia was enveloped in the ball-tampering scandal where our Australian cricket captain was swallowed up in admission of guilt of ball tampering. The resounding crescendo and outcry was at fever pitch, careers have been taken, millions have been lost and our view of Australin cricket changed forever.
We dissect the leadership lessons from this debacle and what can you learn. It doesn't matter where you are in the world, this incident has lessons from you.
Lessons on Influence - Lessons on Integrity - Lessons on Culture - Lessons on Presence
Whether you agree with the associated outcry or not, the reality is that poor leadership created the scandal and the response would not have happened if strong leadership has been shown.
And its probably happening in your business, in your organisation today. SO what can you learn to enable and empower Powerful leadership.
You my friend are a superhero leader. Act and behave like one.

Today we are sharing a reader’s contribution, from Darren in NSW. He wrote to us to tell us about the situation they are in. Darren is employed as a wait staff in a small café/restaurant on the coast in NSW.
Darren shared with us the actions of the dumb owner, and the affect it is having on the team and the business. We have called this Dumb Leader – Ruled by the Chef.
The Dumb Leader has a problem with the business and the problem is the chef. Being a small business they don’t have a large choice of employees or a large team to call on, so we have a small team, and most of us get on. With one exception The Chef.

“I recently read an alarming statistic that said 77% of employees who work for a bad boss have higher levels of stress and those with leaders who use tactics like bullying are 60% more likely to suffer heart trauma. In this light, bad leadership is more detrimental then just creating a toxic work environment.”
And that’s why you should take a different approach to learning from them. Because its your health at risk. Understandably the mental health aspect, but 60% more likely to suffer heart trauma. Seriously, its time for a different approach.

Today I am going to share thoughts around a Dumb Leader that we call the power up and talk down leader. Maybe you have experienced a leader like this, a leader who makes them feel big by making you feel small.
I’ve experienced the feeling of having someone power up, whether it’s by using intimidation language, whether it’s by talking over the top of me, whether it’s in body language, whether it’s in silent treatment, whether it’s in their actions, whether it’s in their behaviours.
They power up, some would say they abuse their power. To them power if the holy grail, maybe you’ve worked with someone like that? Maybe you’ve been lucky and missed that one.

We call our leader the Ostrich, and that’s because he prefers to keep his head in the sand. He prefers not to know about anything that may bee seen as bad news – he prefers to not know and only deals with bad news when it is inevitable.
When confronted by someone who wants to give him bad news, he tends to get angry and the words JUST fix it or else will come out in some stage of the conversation, or he just refuses to listen and says that is unacceptable – get it done.

It’s real. The boys club, or it’s female equivalent, the girl’s army or dyad. At best polarising, at worst completely divisive. They exist in our corporate worlds and in our business networks. They are as real as we want them to be. And they are the domain of the Dumb Leader.
The talk on a Monday morning centred around the weekend’s games, as the boys boosted their testosterone levels in relaying the moments of elation and disparity arising from the games.
And everyone that was not part of the club, felt isolated and alone. They did not feel part of the team.

And what a doozy we have for you. We have labelled this guy, this DL the Volatile Volcano…. Known and feared for intermittent eruptions.
Every day we head into the office, wishing for an eruption free day, but often it’s ground hog day again. Our boss, the owner of the business has no self-control over his own emotions…. Everyone walks on eggshells when he is in the office, everyone is on edge, it is making some of the office girls sick, we all dread coming to work but very few of us take days off as we know it just makes worse for the rest.

What they see in the recruitment stage is replicated if they do take up the offer. If you are too busy for them during recruitment, you’ll always be too busy to coach and develop them.
To me there is a stereotype here of a Dumb Leader – The one that believes they are more important than others. The one that always has more important things to do than be with others, attend to others and serves others. For some it’s a power thing, for others its woefully inadequate time management and prioritisation skills and a third set is the businesses that failed in developing ahead of growth and the people are under constant stress in getting their job done.

Episode 112 of the Dumb Leaders highlights some observations around the retail landscape, as news comes through of even more retailers in trouble with word that at least six national retailers will close up shop prior to the end of the first quarter in 2018.
Dumb Leaders in retail, with seemingly little idea on how to compete, are being gapped more and more by retailers who understand what they are doing and how they are doing it. The gap gets wider between the winners and the losers.
The thinking that places them where they are now, wont be the thinking that fixes it for them.

Episode 106 of the Dumb Leaders Podcast opens up a contribution from a reader from the U.S. The Dumb Leader we speak of today, shares too much about too many things, too many opinions, too much, too much.
The result is a team that performs despite the manager. The focus of their humour and the scorn of ridicule. And when you listen in you can see why. We don't condone the behaviour here, but just showing reality.
Dissecting the why and providing the how.

Episode 104 of the Dumb Leaders Podcast Talking about Plonker Pete.
Welcome to the Dumb Leaders Podcast as today I share another story that is amazing if not for its reality. It’s real
We have a state election here in Qld at the moment and as is the case more and more so, it can get nasty and personal. And in the part where I live it is particulary toxic.
But in an interesting side-show we have an independent candidate re-contesting a local seat, nothing ultimately fascinating about that but this independent is a guy that’s picked up the nickname of Plonker Pete.
Humans are fascinating and we don't make this up.
