Brian and Galen are back to talk about media and life during the Covid-19 outbreak. The pandemic seems to be Twitter's time to shine. Brian takes the pessimistic side, while Galen takes the optimistic angle. I know, right?
They also lament the experiences of their seniors and talk about their cooking goals for the next few weeks/months. It's all about intentionality.

We’re back, Flipside Nation!
Galen is back teaching after his sabbatical, but Brian is still on hibernation during his endless winter break. The boys are back for the start of Season 9, and they are great fun to be state employees and not federal ones. This leads to a discussion about what a United States University would look like. The paperwork. The bureaucracy. The sprawling campus in Nevada. What conference would they join? Is Condoleezza Rice the natural for athletic director?
This gives way to a discussion about Max Read’s article in New York magazine about just how much of the internet is fake. Brian assures us that he’s not a bot, which is exactly what a bot would say. But seriously, what does it mean for our culture that metrics are such a definitive part of our media landscape? If so much of our world is built upon the premise that what we’re seeing is real, what does it mean when we have to question all of that? And while there’s a lot about the internet to hate, the maps are pretty solid.
Finally, there’s discussion of the NFL playoffs. Galen’s Colts look good, and Brian’s on the bandwagon. Also, how is it that 74 NBC cameras could not come up with a definitive angle of the double doing?

It’s the earliest in the day that Brian and Galen have ever recorded, and Brian was up late at an Avett Brothers concert the night before, so it’s time for some cobweb podcasting. There is much caffeine involved.

The boys are back with a new theme song, a new streamlined format and the same-old background noises. Topics include ESPN on Snapchat and what it means for sports media and for the social media platform; Twitter at 280 and whether or not the new character count fundamentally changes Twitter; Does College Basketball Need Saving? and what people really want from the sport.
It’s a mid-afternoon edition of The Flip Side, and it’s a quick episode. Something something about Galen having to “teach class” because he’s a “university professor.” Whatever.
The boys begin with Brian talking his weekend trip to Philadelphia and the Mütter Museum, where he saw (among other things) a 40-pound colon. True story. Galen fills Brian in on the sad state of Everton’s season, and Brian realizes he picked his new favorite soccer team poorly.
There are two main topics today. The first is Red Lobster’s secret Endless Shrimp menu. This begets a larger conversation about why certain restaurants have secret menus and which one would be the best (hint, it’s Taco Bell).
Then it’s on to The Athletic and the comments its founder made to the New York Times on Monday and the ensuing kerfuffle. The boys go beyond the internet outrage machine to talk about what it all means for the future of sports journalism.

It’s a Throwback … Monday? The boys are back at their classic time for an old-school edition of The Flip Side.
They start with high praise for friend of the show Lauren Smith, who became an official Ironman this weekend. That eventually segues into talk of a New York Times story showing how Trump voters view the NFL, how tribalism is affecting our world and how partisanship is a hell of a drug.
The main topic is Twitter - or, in Galen’s words, why Twitter has no chill. Brian thinks Twitter feels very different than it did even a few years ago and that it is becoming less vital. Galen still believes in what Twitter can be, even if people take everything on there way too seriously. There’s no answer to be had, but it’s a good discussion on the present state and potential future of social media.
They boys also talk about the baseball playoffs and why they are both awesome and interminable.
There is also the potential of a live in-kitchen show next week.

It’s another mid-afternoon recording of The Flip Side, and Brian and Galen have come up with the newest HGTV series idea — World’s Awesomest Laundry Rooms.
This week, they talk about why HGTV was not the cause of the housing crisis. They try to figure out the most disgusting food combination they’d eat (it involves mashed potatoes) and plan out potential food-related road trips. Also, which cartoon characters would they like to be friends with? Which ones would be the worst?
Brian also describes his experience eating McDonald’s pizza.
It’s the start of Season 6 (OK, so Brian kind of unilaterally declared it to be Season 6). Galen’s back from a week in Germany, Brian’s back from a week in Vermont. They talk about German beer and what the tailgating parties for an NFL team in Vermont would be like.
The boys talk about the ongoing Jemele Hill story and the representation of Latinos in the media. They also break down the best cure for a chest cold, 1980s movie sequels, the difference between a cheeseburger and a cheeseburger sub, and their favorite breakfast cereals. The main topic, such as it is, looks at whether or not the Colts and Bills are truly bad franchises or not.
So. There’s been a bit of news this week.
Brian and Galen do their best to make sense of what happened in Charlottesville, what’s happening with the Trump administration, what’s going on in the country. Because really, who watches Indiana Jones and roots AGAINST Indiana Jones?
Also, does it make any sense that Chick-Fil-A makes more money by being closed on Sunday?
No. No it does not.
The Flip Side’s intermittent summer schedule continues, but this is a good one.
Brian’s wife has recently started listening to Ryan Adams, and this has Galen super excited. They talk about Ryan’s long discography and the best ways to get into an established artist without being too Rob Gordon about it.
Then, the boys discuss some great issues stemming from a few online discussions this week. Why, oh why, don’t people know how to merge (which turns into a discussion on the importance of lines and waiting your turn in our culture). What does the future of TV look like now that Disney is creating its own streaming services? Who is the bigger loser in this — Netflix or cable?
And they tease to what’s sure to be a fascinating discussion on the state of academic publishing.
Brian is back from the drudgery of vacation and is back in the thrilling world of work and podcasting. He and Galen attempt to answer the questions of our time. Why did Vice Sports fail? Is The Athletic a potentially successful new model for sports journalism? What happened to NASCAR? How does the new Star Trek series look? Why do we have lawns?

In 2016, the website Food Republic published a chart purporting to rank all styles of french fries from best to worst.
The list is, to say it bluntly, ridiculous.
Galen and Brian break down all the ways the list is wrong and talk about why you can’t separate a french fry from where it’s made.
Also, what’s worse: Auto-play videos that follow you down the screen, or horribly invasive pop-up ads? The boys break down the issues facing the newspaper industry.
The band is back together, and trying some new things. This episode streamed live, but Brian’s computer was temperamental, which led to all sorts of technical shenanigans at the start.
But once that was figured out, the boys were back. They give a medal to millennials for killing off Applebee’s, discuss the lack of a Blue Apron sponsorship, and discuss the proper ways to make gumbo and the best shows on TV right now. There are also, against all odds, two stories about Margaritaville.
It’s the Season 4 finale, and the boys start out with their biggest disagreement yet — over the merits of pancakes, waffles, and French Toast (Brian’s note, since I write the show notes: Galen is SO wrong on this) and have a wonderful debate over the epistemology of breakfast. They also answer some really important questions: Why do people store things in their ovens? What is the most depressing meat to eat? What 1990s show will be rebooted as the next terrible movie? Galen’s back from a weekend at the IACS conference in Phoenix. Brian has research envy and taco envy. OK. Just taco envy. The boys talk about the conference and the state of sports communication research. They talk a lot about that … less than entertaining … NCAA Championship game, why officiating in college basketball is so bad and what can be do to improve it, and why sports need full time officials. They also do a deep dive into the art of the octopus taco.
A lot of great reader questions lead to the boys helping a lot of people. Galen’s done five podcasts in the past week (Indiana fired its basketball coach. Perhaps you heard?), so what’s one more? After some short follow up about Indiana basketball and their sorry NCAA brackets, the boys get down to business. There’s a deep dive down the 1990s alternative rock rabbit hole, and the boys talk about what makes a good question for a journalist. And they discuss what kind of clothing they would like to see able to immediately order take-out food.
The boys are recording at NOON (GASP!) instead of their usual 9 p.m. Does this lead to a new vibe for the show. A less cynical, more optimistic outlook on life and sports and media? Well … There’s lots of bracket talk, specifically about the criteria used by the NCAA Selection Committee. Brian wants more 20-loss teams in the tournament. Galen’s fine with things as they are. They also talk about their (sure-to-be-terrible) brackets. They also do a deep dive on the deep doo-doo Indiana Basketball finds itself in these days.
Whatever label you put on it, the boys are back and they are struggling with their pronunciation of the Spanish “j”. Galen is back from spending the weekend at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston. He talks about what he learned about virtual reality in sports and about What’s Next in sports, which leads to a really interesting discussion about how we as educators can best prepare students for careers. They also discuss how many pieces of bacon you can eat at breakfast before violating accepted breakfast norms.
A day after the Oscars, Brian and Galen unpack the burgeoning Annette Bening conspiracy. Has anybody said where she was when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read the wrong Best Picture winner? Didn’t think so … In addition to breaking down all the nonsense at the Academy Awards, the boys also talk about what alcoholic drink is the most contemplative, the potential of an IU-St. Bonaventure NIT game, break down the best fast-food fried chicken, and talk about beloved regional restaurant chains.
Brian’s back from a nasty bout of the flu, Galen’s got hard out to watch Indiana basketball play Iowa, but the boys have plenty of time for some important discussions. They talk about tape. They talk about the L.A. Lakers and Eddie Donovan. And they do a surprisingly fun deep dive into the 1967 TV ratings, the portability of culture and the greatness of Adam West–era Batman.
It’s an overflow of topics. More topics than the boys can get through in one episode. And yet, they manage to pull it off, with all their usual charm and charisma. Discussions about the future of Indiana basketball, college basketball’s ridiculous new experimental rule, Law and Order SVU, the Grammys, Charles Oakley, Trump and the nuclear football, and a guest appearance by Flo Rita in the mall.
Last night they handled the Super Bowl. Tonight, the boys bare back with their usual witty repartee and insightful banter. Why does St. Bonaventure men’s basketball keep getting screwed? Why are college basketball referees systematically so bad? When will IU basketball win in Wisconsin? Is a Fantasy Masterchef Junior League crossing the line?
After the Patriots incredible 34-28 come-from-behind victory over the Falcons in Super Bowl LI on Sunday, Galen and Brian host an emergency podcast to talk about the Falcons' poor coaching, the sustained excellence of the Patriots, and Verizon's BDSM. Galen gives Brian some musical homework, and Brian forgives Galen’s ultimate betrayal.
