The Dangerous & Delicate Balancing Act Between Your Dream Job and Your Day Job

Formerly titled Real Person | Real Needs

This podcast chronicles the journey of a 30-something who is trying to discover his purpose in life and make his dreams a reality.

Geoff Desiato is a husband and father of two, with the responsibility to provide for his family. He's a proud high-school graduate who has worked full-time since he was 17 years old. But after 13 years of working for “The Man,” and being told that he needed to go back to school if he wanted to be successful, Geoff experienced a pre-mid-life crisis.

Like many people, Geoff had passions and dreams but not the ability or confidence to pursue them. With the support of his wife, Geoff decided it was time to find a suitable career that would allow him to pursue his dreams while still providing for his family and doing something he loved.

So Geoff set out on his entrepreneurial journey by diving into the Real Estate industry. Upon getting his first taste of self-employment, Geoff became fascinated with entrepreneurship, and has since dedicated his time and energy to helping people who feel trapped in their day jobs discover how they are uniquely positioned to change the world!

As a result of his persistence, Geoff is now working full-time as an actor.

This podcast is for people who struggle with balancing their day job while pursuing their dream job.

Up ’til now I have tried my best to encourage you to take some baby steps toward pursuing your dream. I’ve allowed you to examine my life in a rather voyeuristic manner as I share story after story of my mistakes and failures. I’m pretty open about my struggles when asked, and sometimes even when I’m not asked. And that’s why it has been comfortable for you to read, listen, and/or watch me from afar. “This guy’s just like me,” you may even tell yourself. But I have some bad news for you. There comes a point in every relationship when a gauntlet must drop. Consider this our DTR (Define the Relationship) conversation.

View Details

Over the last few weeks, I’ve mainly focused on our own internal struggles and insecurities that keep us from taking the necessary steps to better our situation. Our past failures, fear, and overall self-doubt make up just some of the voices that swirl around inside our head and keep our feet nailed to the floor. These voices must be silenced if you ever hope to pursue something your passionate about as a career. However, there is something else that keeps us from taking the most thrilling leap of our lives. How do we silence the voices of those around us who want to keep us from believing we can achieve more?

View Details

I should’ve known that when I decided to discuss the topic of procrastination, that I would do just that – procrastinate. When I sat down to write the copy for this video, I found myself finding every excuse not to do it. I also struggled to focus on what I wanted to say. And that’s what happens to everyone. We waste time thinking about doing something instead of just getting it done.

View Details

It takes a lot of gumption to jump-start your life after years of being stuck in the mundane. No doubt that’s why a lot of us have, at one time or another, chosen to stay put in jobs or circumstances that were less than ideal. Many of us have battled with our own limited perception of what we are capable of and that has kept us anchored to our increasingly uncomfortable desk chairs.

It’s one thing to doubt that things will go your way based on past experiences, but I think what holds people back more than anything else is doubting your own talents and abilities. I call this the 900lb Gorilla of Self-Doubt. We simply buy in to the lie that we can’t do something that in truth we are completely capable of doing. We allow the figurative gorilla to pin us down so that we are imprisoned within our current habitat. But there is an entire world out there just waiting to be explored, and until you tackle the gorilla, you will never be able to discover what you were created to do.

In the last podcast, I ranted and raved about the importance of educating yourself beyond (and maybe even in place of) formal education. The number one way we can educate ourselves is to stimulate our brain by reading. And I don’t mean reading your News Feed or click-bait articles. I mean good old-fashioned books.

By now you probably know that I didn’t go to college. The older I get the more I realize that that may not be such a bad thing. And here’s why…

If I were to ask you to think of a friend or family member who went to college, started and finished with the same major, and subsequently got a job in their precise field of study, you’d probably find it difficult to pinpoint more than a handful. The truth is the majority of people who go to college have no idea what they want to do in life when deciding on a college and area of study.

As humans, we often live in a perpetual state of fear. Unfortunately, we allow this fear to cripple us rather than motivate us. The most essential thing you need to do today is overcome the very thing that is keeping you from doing what you were born to do.

"When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us." — Helen Keller

"One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through. Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters - whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished." — Paulo Coelho

When pursuing your dream, you are faced with many goodbyes. Some of these goodbyes are good, like bidding adieu to our limited perception of what we can achieve. Or to the naysayers who try to keep us from our pursuit. Other goodbyes are difficult, because it means letting go of who we once believed we would be.

In this episode of the #ActingRealtor, the masks come off both figuratively and literally as we get closer to the truth of the origins of COVID, what our bureaucrats really knew, and what it means for everything we've been told over the past year. I also discuss the profound psychological effect of finally seeing people shed their masks, and finally, I get to celebrate my grandmother's 100th birthday after not being able to see her for over a year.

In this episode of the #ActingRealtor, after a year of “experts” telling us that testing is only capturing 10-25% of all actual cases (the CDC has said anywhere from 8-13x as many cases as confirmed, the WHO as many as 20x), and saying that 40-80% of infections lead to mild and no symptoms (which means people may not even get tested), I use their own estimates and simple math to explain the sudden steep decline in cases.

It's times like these that I realize how important it is for my family legacy that I document my life. As a society we are facing something that we hoped we'd only see in the movies. None of us know what to expect when we wake up each day. In this episode of the #ActingRealtor, I find out that I'm being placed on furlough from my job as the state of Pennsylvania closes all non-essential businesses, which means, I also can't practice real estate. I found out last night that due to the COVID-19 outbreak, I, along with almost all of my colleagues, will be placed on indefinite furlough from my job (unemployment with intent to return) at Sight & Sound, effective March 29th. Unfortunately, there is no work from home option for a performer (LOL) and no significant way for a performing arts company to generate income to pay its employees while the doors are closed. I am grateful that I will be paid through the end of the month, considering I have not worked since March 13th.

I love my job, the company I work for, my colleagues, and the leaders whose hearts are broken having to make this decision. I could see it in their eyes as they delivered the news. They had spent the last week crying out to God for answers, as have many of us in these uncertain times.

I also know that PA did not allow me to collect unemployment during my furlough in January because I was self-employed within 18 months of my filing date. I am not sure whether or not an exception will be made this time around considering the dire circumstances in which many of us find ourselves. My heart also goes out to many of my colleagues in the real estate industry. Real estate transactions have been left in limbo as a result of social distancing mandates, and since all realtors are self-employed, I doubt they can collect unemployment. So what does an #ActingRealtor do when not acting or realtor…ing?

We’ll find out together, won’t we?

Maybe I’ll finally get around to publishing that book on Amazon I have been working on for years, I’ll definitely live-stream a few concerts, anything I can do to stay busy.

Like so many of you, I have no idea what the future holds, but I know that God gives us grace and peace when we need it most, rarely before but always in the moment. He has proven Himself faithful time and time again in my life and today is no different. I feel a sense of peace and calm that passes understanding in light of everything going on around us. When everything in our lives seems to be unraveling, we have no choice but to hold on tightly to the One who holds all things together.

“He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17 ESV

“…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 ESV

“Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us…” 2 Corinthians 1:9-10 NIV

AT THIS POINT, YOU MAY BE THINKING, “WAIT…ISN’T THIS GUY JUST A REALTOR?” I hear you. These ideas may seem crazy to some. That is why I am so thankful for those who have supported me and my business. While my approach may be unconventional at times, I truly believe in building a community of like-minded people who are more concerned with being authentic than appealing to the masses, while confronting fear and meeting real needs.

One of the things that I strive to communicate to my clients is the importance of understanding the transaction from the "opposing" side. I use that word not in an adversarial way, but simply because it is accurate. The sellers and buyers are at opposite ends of the settlement table, but one of my jobs is reminding people that regardless of whether they are buying or selling, everyone wants the same outcome.

I always try to hit potential clients with the hard truth upfront in order to set appropriate expectations. Unfortunately, sometimes it is an ugly truth and people don't want to hear it. But I always caution people, when it comes to real estate, be watchful for those who tell you everything you want to hear.

Now as a disclaimer, I am not saying that people who work in Real Estate are out and out LYING all the time (though there are definitely a few bad apples in the bunch). However, I will say that there is a certain massaging of the truth that takes place in order for home buyers/sellers to feel comfortable, and for Realtors® to survive in this dog-eat-dog industry.

I don’t always talk about real estate, even though that is how I supported myself for the majority of the last 5 years. But every so often something happens that I feel obligated to write about in an effort to hopefully help distance myself from the deceptive behaviors I see on a regular basis in the real estate industry.

I get frustrated as I scrape and claw for every client I work with only to be done in by the unethical behavior of my competitors. This is why authenticity and generosity are the two pillars of my business. It may make business growth slower but ultimately I’d rather be kept awake at night because of a lack of clients rather than a lack of morals.

If I want to still be able to support my family 5 years from now, I can't ignore the overwhelming evidence that shows that my way of making a living today may not exist 10 years from now.

Netflix, Amazon, Uber, and AirBnB all disrupted their respective industries by going direct-to-consumer and cutting out the middle-man. The next logical step is for companies like Zillow and RedFin to facilitate real estate transactions directly between home-buyers and home-sellers. In fact, most agents pay fees to these companies for leads, so in a sense they are funding the companies who are trying to put the agent out of business.

But it didn’t take long for me to see that my way of thinking doesn’t necessarily jell with the industry at large. In case you haven’t noticed, the Real Estate industry “gurus” try their best to create cookie-cutter agents who go with the flow and do things the same way as everyone else. However there is something else that keeps us from taking the most thrilling leap of our lives.

I HATE FEAR.

More accurately, I hate what fear does to people. It makes us irrational. Fear is a cycle that allows us to stay stuck in our wrong frame of mind. It’s an emotional state that cripples us from making right choices. When we are afraid, that is the only thing we can think about it. And we can’t imagine that we will ever be able to overcome our fears. So many people know what they want out of life but fear keeps them from pursuing it.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” — Helen Keller

“One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through. Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished.” — Paulo Coelho

There is a famous quote by Mark Twain that makes the social media rounds every so often…I’m sure you’ve either seen or heard it before.

“The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.”

In this episode, we look at four key elements to self-improvement and extreme ownership. For anyone who is looking to pursue their dreams while also being incredibly practical, then these four things that I have implemented in my life as an acting realtor may be helpful for you. 1. Deploying Self-Awareness and Destroying Self-Doubt 2. Putting Down Your Device and Picking Up a Book 3. Defeating Procrastination Through Prioritization 4. Taking Ownership of Outcomes and Refusing to Complain

In this episode, I get serious. People that know me know that I'm very opinionated, but I like to think that my opinions are based on cold hard facts. I don't just repeat something I hear without doing the work to discover for myself whether that really is the truth or not. Unfortunately, the industry of real estate is poorly built on the backs of those who will follow the fold and do what they are told. If you work in real estate, or know someone who does, this episode is for you.

This episode features content that originally appeared on the Real Person Real Needs podcast. It has been incorporated with new content to create this new episode.

With the launch of Discover SPRINGFORD, it has made writing and creating content more difficult from a time commitment standpoint. So, I decided to return to documenting my life more in real-time. But this time, I’m doing it through video. I don’t know how frequently I’ll post, so I don’t want to lock in a regular day and time. I also want to be sure to keep it brief so as not to add another cumbersome task to my already full plate.

As an aspiring actor, whose dream is to one day work for Sight & Sound Theatres, I have decided to work in real estate in order to give me the flexibility to work on my craft while still providing for my family. The daily struggle of balancing your day job with the pursuit of your dream job is what Acting Realtor TV will capture. I hope you will check it out!

For those of you who know me, you know that our journey to Royersford didn't come without its share of obstacles. In this episode, I revisit the Real Person | Real Needs archives and combine each segment from the history of our housing journey into one continuous narrative. Now that this part of our life is somewhat resolved it is incredible to go back and listen to just how bumpy the road was that led us here.

In this episode, I use my younger son’s struggles with fear to discuss how we need to redefine our fear so that it is a catalyst rather a crutch. I also comment on how contentment in life is both alluring and elusive for someone like me, and share my somewhat controversial thoughts on college education.

On this episode, I share how self-employment and chasing your dreams can be an emotional roller-coaster. It certainly isn’t for everyone and frankly some days I wonder if it’s even for me! But in the midst of all of the chaos and uncertainty, God is faithful to teach me important lessons and let the clouds part so that I can see a bit more clearly in the midst of the storms.

As many of you know, my dream is to one day work for Sight & Sound Theatres in Lancaster, PA. For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been invited to audition for them twice. Once in 2015 and then again in 2016. Both times I was not selected for their upcoming season. And I’d come to terms with that and have continued to work on improving as an actor and performer in the meantime. I’d also started to look ahead to 2017 and outline my plan for the year as best I could.

Then something interesting happened.

A quick disclaimer: this episode includes a lot of coughing, sniffling, and overall grossness courtesy of yours truly and my seasonal allergies. Autumn is my absolute favorite season for a number of reasons. Football, leaves, Thanksgiving, My Fall Wardrobe (which includes an assortment of sweater vests, bowties, and dope jackets). I also met my wife during this season and the memories of that first autumn together are still fresh in my mind.

But this time of year also brings with it an annual bout of allergy-induced asthma. It’s like clockwork, really.

The job of an aspiring actor is to audition. Over and over again. Some will go well. Some won't. But what is important to me is that I keep lining them up, preparing, and doing my best, come what may. I decided to document some of my recent experiences. So here’s your opportunity to know what it’s like to be an #ActingRealtor

Doing something you love is not always glamorous, which is why it is important to be authentic and generous no matter what. By doing so, you can live a pretty rewarding life.

After months of deliberation, and several short hiatuses (including right now), I've made the decision to retitle and rebrand my podcast. The "Real Person | Real Needs" podcast will now be known as "The Acting Realtor" podcast.

www.actingrealtor.com

Don't worry you don't have to update your feeds or podcast apps.

The first 42 episodes of my podcasting career were basically me finding my footing and exploring this new (to me anyway) world of podcasting. But as I've grown and learned more about the medium, it seemed that the title just didn't fit the content of the show. In other words, I began to feel that I was not branded appropriately for my target audience.

The content has always come from the same place; however starting at episode 43, I began to focus more on creating an audio diary of my life as a young husband, father, and realtor trying to "make it" as a performer, while still providing for my family.

The new subtitle sort of explains it all. "The Dangerous & Delicate Balancing Act Between Your Dream Job & Your Day Job."

And with my real estate business starting a new phase (Discover Springford), it seemed like it was time to make a change with my first podcast. #RealPersonRealNeeds has been a guiding light for me through many a dark and unforeseen circumstance, and making this change will no doubt lead the podcast in a different direction even though the content won't really change.

I'm happy to announce however that the #RealPersonRealNeeds moniker will live on as the name of my growing podcast network. Stay tuned for news and updates about the RealPersonRealNeeds Podcast Network, which will now have 5 original podcasts for a variety of audiences.

The Acting Realtor Discover Springford The AltarLife Podcast w/ Brent + Geoff The Unchained Gospel Behind the Music: The Making of INRI by The No Longer For all of my faithful listeners, I ask that you stay tuned in. I truly appreciate your support these last 20 months or so. I truly feel that the new title and subtitle will attract the right listeners who are looking for support in pursuing their dream job while still holding down their day job.

I'm excited to see where things continue to grow from here. Thank you and Godspeed,

Geoff

It's been over a month, and it's two days late, but I am finally back with a new episode! This last month has been one of the most challenging since I began pursuing my dream. That's why I haven't been as active on the podcast and the blog. But there are a lot of exciting things still in the works. I think I've aged a year or two in the last month due to stress but I am clinging to God to get me through and I am thankful that He has continued to provide for me and my family even if I am often too blinded by my anxiety to see it.  Notes: 00:00-01:45 Moving Day | Playing a Gig

In this episode, I sit down with Karin Wolfle, entrepreneur/artist behind The Shabby Attic in Lansdale, PA. Having left behind a career in the mental health field, Karin decided to pursue her love of fine arts by starting her own business. She soon realized that being an entrepreneur requires a little bit of “crazy,” and whole lot more elbow grease. While she admittedly (and candidly) has been through many trials personally and professionally, she hopes to use both her degrees in fine arts, and in psychology, to not only bring new life and purpose to old furniture, but by inspiring others with her story of overcoming adversity and making the most of second chances.

In this episode, I sit down with “The Sultan of Silver” himself, George Bruno. To say that George is a professionally licensed barber is almost like doing him a disservice. I prefer to use the term Renaissance Man. Whether he’s posting videos of beard grooming tips, sharing random insights on father/son relationships and cigars, or simply enjoying a summer evening while listening to Sinatra, George is truly comfortable in his own skin. Something which he uses to his advantage when driving his business. If you are looking for a straight razor shave and a great conversation, George is your guy. But be sure to block out enough time, with George, you can never run out of things to talk about.

You can find more info about George @georgeabruno on Instagram, his YouTube Channel "Gray Bailey," and his website www.georgebruno.com
