Ben is a fourth generation grower at Crosslands Flower Nursery which was established in 1936 in West Sussex and is one of the last flower nurseries producing cut flowers in a full colour range all year-round. Ben’s British Alstroemeria is a very sustainable crop. His flowers are not sprayed with any chemicals after being harvested and go into recyclable, reusable boxes and arrive with customers the next day. No soil cooling techniques are used to force production and some flower beds are over 20 years old, still producing premium quality stems. Under 5% of the crop is replanted a year so sterilizing the soil is kept to a minimum. The British Alstroemeria is known as a ‘Cool Crop’ and a ‘Dry Crop’ so doesn’t take much heat input or watering. Optimum heat at night through the winter is just 13°C via a biomass boiler and the crop is watered for just 20 minutes once a month in the winter and just 20 minutes once every 10 days in the summer unlike flowers grown in warmer countries that use a lot more water resource. When Ben’s flowers have been picked they don’t go into big freezers, the cooling storage system at Crosslands is usually turned off between November and March. When the flowers need to be stored in warmer weather they’re only chilled at about 6°C instead of 0.5°C like most imported flowers. They are only stored for a couple of days before they are with the customers. They are a lot fresher than flowers that go all around the world. Most importantly all the stems are harvested at a ‘ripe’ big fat bud stage giving a bigger more vibrant flower unlike the imports that are harvested too tight so more can be transported in boats and planes.
Ben also only employs local people and more importantly does apprenticeship schemes with local horticultural colleges and goes into floristry colleges to give his British Flowers Rock Talks Next to being a fulltime grower, Ben is an avid campaigner for British Flowers and takes any opportunity he can to spread the word that British Flowers Rock!

Miles is co-founder and Director of the global organisation ‘The People Academy’, an organisation that helps Leaders, Coaches, Manager’s and Teams become better at communicating with each other. Miles’ other passion is Radio and he is also Station Director of Express FM. He has worked in over 35 countries in 20 years, across diverse industries from elite sport to the corporate word and local government. Clients include the likes of BMW Group, The Co-operative, Alstom, Doosan, Virgin and John Lewis, and the United States Olympic Committee (Team USA). He also works with smaller organisations like Beaulieu Motor Museum and Fareham Borough Council.
People Academy, whilst UK based, was chosen in 2013 as Lead consultants to the USA Olympic team to support their head coaches through the maze of working with and leading many different athletes from 84 sports in the run up to Rio 2016. Amongst many others, Miles has been working with the coaches from the USA women’s soccer team who have recently taken the world by storm winning the FIFA World Cup. He is also working with USA Cycling, Volleyball, Figure Skating, Snowboarding and Hockey to name a few. Miles also worked with Team Head Coaches for USA Winter Sports Coaches in the build up to the Winter Olympics in South Korea, and secured the contract to support Team USA with their people development up to the Tokyo games in 2020 and the next Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022. He is jointly responsible for creating the ‘People Dimension’, a methodology which has been adopted by BMW Group and Team USA as their preferred way of looking at communication and behaviour through individuals. These include areas such as self-awareness, people acuity, agility and self-management. BMW Group adopted this approach, as a way of looking at the way leaders create a high performing team culture within their organisation.
His professional career started with organisations such as Nat West, American Express and Friends Provident where he spent a number of years in Sales and National Sales Management related roles. He left ‘’Corporate life’’ to set up his Business in 1997 where his focus was on using what he had learnt over those 15 years of working with people and the challenges this brought in large organisations.
Miles has also hosted the Business Show on Express FM for the last 10 years and took over the reigns as Station Director in 2017. He loves everything about Community Radio and is determined to put Express FM at the very top of Local Community Radio in the UK. Something they are very close to achieving.

This Sandi Toksvig enthusiast is also a Part time specialist support worker for LGBTQ+ young people, working to support inclusion in our city by working with a variety of young people, families and professionals focused on action and striving for portsmouth to be a truly diverse and inclusive city of safety and opportunity. Building bridges, breaking down stigmas and just here to show off our wonderful city of Portsea Island! Play up pompey!

This week we are joined in the studio by S J & Dan from All Call Signs plus interview with International street artist My Dog Sighs. About All Call Signs ~ All Call Signs is a peer-to-peer communication app for Veterans and serving military personnel. Our chat service is manned by volunteers who have served in the forces and understand the stresses and struggles that come with service. All Call Signs was started by two veterans who suffer with mental health issues stemmed from their military career
In the wake of the loss of their service friend Danny Johnston in May 2018, the pair put their heads together to provide what they saw as a gap in services available to our Armed Forces personnel. Dan Arnold Co-Founder of All Call Signs said “ there seemed to be a real disconnect with myself and my mental health practitioner, they didn't understand the language we use in the military and when I finally told them about my trauma they couldn't relate”
It’s coming up to our 12 months since we started All Call Signs, and in that time we’ve managed to grow exponentially. Our Beacon application (for recovering at-risk members of the Armed Forces community troops when they go missing) has 7500+ users. We’ve launched 48 Beacon 'Alerts' - , this is a call to action that goes out to all subscribers. in order to ensure any veterans or service personnel at risk are recovered before making a poor decision. To date, 45'Beacons' have been resolved, 18 with direct intervention from a Beacon subscriber (either through aiding the police or actually finding them and bringing them to safety)..
Our chat application is the largest peer support network in the UK with 470+ dedicated support listeners, all with a military background. We consistently see new chats of around 50-70 per week being started on the network and regularly signpost to other charities and organisations for everything from housing and work opportunities to therapy for mental health issues.
One notable success story was an All Call Signs subscriber who works in a hotel, had served breakfast to one of our missing veterans that morning. The police were able to go and speak to him directly on the back of that information, which led to his safe return.
We have been campaigning on behalf of veterans for improvements in the provisions surrounding mental health, this has seen us speaking directly with members of Parliament and even having a round table discussion with the Deputy Defence Secretary Gavin Jones MP to discuss our ideas and proposed solutions. We have seen positive change, including the Government announcing they will instruct coroners to record veteran suicide correctly; a key necessity to ensure better funding and awareness of veteran suicide. We are about to have a Halls debate scheduled in Parliament with Stephen Morgan MP where we have an opportunity to put our questions regarding veteran suicide to Tobias Elwood MP.
What started out as a passion project in the wake of our friend’s suicide in May last year has grown into a valuable and much needed service with over 45,000 Facebook followers.It’s likely we will both be full-time with All Call Signs in the not too distant future and will still likely require more manpower to meet demand.

Andy Grays has spent most of his working life (34 years) working in theatre, venue and events management. This includes managing 2 West End Theatres (the Lyric & Duchess Theatres), on the management team of 2 other West End Theatres (Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the Gielgud) and spells at the London Palladium and Her Majesty’s Theatre. In the West End he worked on the opening of Miss Saigon and the Olivier Award Winning ‘Five Guys Named Moe’, both with the producer Cameron Mackintosh. He started his career in theatres in Liverpool and worked at one of the country’s leading music venues The Manchester Apollo. Theatre management brings you into contact with many shows, artists and diverse audiences. As well as the shows mentioned above, Andy has worked on hundreds of great shows including Phantom of the Opera, A Chorus Line, Run for Your Wife, Joseph, Evita as well as with some of the world’s greatest music artists. In 2003 he opened the Hat Factory Arts Centre in Luton, helped set up the Luton Cultural Trust in 2008 and was appointed CEO of the Guildhall Trust in 2012. He oversaw the delivery of the UK largest one day carnival in Luton for several years and was Chair of the Bedfordshire Cultural Olympiad Forum.

Welcome back to season 2 ‘She made me do it Podcast’ Portsmouth very on podcast for our beautiful city! This week we discuss the future visit of United States of America President Donald Trump coming to Portsmouth for DDay 75. And we are joined in the studio by lovely Alex Boyd of Portsmouth Lifeguards ~ Portsmouth and Southsea Voluntary Lifeguards is a beach lifeguard club based on Southsea. Founded in 1933, we are the oldest lifeguard club in the UK. The main focus of the club is to provide lifeguard cover for Southsea seafront, which takes the form of shoreline, boat & surfski patrols during weekends and bank holidays between May and September. We are a club who are people from the city, serving the people of the city and visitors to our beaches. Our members consist of ages from 13 and above and from all walks of life, from students to mechanics, office workers and medical staff. But we all have something in common, the wish to make a difference and try something new. You don’t know what you can achieve until you try! In addition to the patrols undertaken, the club is a declared rescue unit to HM Coastguard which sees both our lifeguard members and rescue vehicles being tasked to 999 incidents on Southsea beach and in the Solent. The club also provides specialist rescue and first aid cover for special events. Some examples include; triathlons, pier to pier swims, cross Solent swims and power boat races to name but a few.
It is our aim to increase public awareness of lifesaving, rescue techniques and support the promotion and safety of our beaches. The club is affiliated to the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and as such we provide training for a variety of RLSS approved lifesaving, lifeguarding and resuscitation awards. We are also members of Solent Sea Rescue Organisation (SSRO), whose role is to provide a rescue boat service in the Solent region. Being independent to the RNLI, it is important for the Independent lifeboat and lifeguard stations in and around the Solent to stay well connected, and being a part of SSRO is how we achieve this.
Portsmouth and Southsea Voluntary Lifeguards rely 100% on generous donations. Our volunteers give up their free time, in order to be available to be called into action at any point to help others. How You Can Join In & Support Us We are always looking for members and those who want to be involved in what we do. All skills are welcome, but we will teach you, we just ask for enthusiasm and a will to keep trying as much as you can. We need not just those who want to take on the more challenging roles of crew, or Beach Lifeguard, but also Duty Officers for shore operations, drivers, those who can contribute to our fundraising stalls or activities, IT experts and anything which can make a difference. Bianca Carr joins us in the studio to tell us about her UK campaign to get rid of single use plastics in every day life! The Final Straw Solent are a local environmental organisation focussing on raising awareness of the impact of single-use plastic pollution on our oceans and wildlife. Bianca and Lissie run the campaign and work with local businesses to reduce the amount of single-use plastic used and being disposed of across the solent area - so far over 200 businesses have signed up to the campaign pledging to cut back on their plastic consumption. They also run a community and schools outreach programme, running workshops and giving presentations to children and groups of all ages about the issue.
This year the Final Straw Solent are coordinating a plastic-free day on the 8th May, to tie in with the 93rd birthday of Sir David Attenborough. To date, 80 schools have signed up to the day (approx 30,000 children), and will spend the day avoiding single-use plastic wherever possible - in lunch boxes and out of school. The children will be taking part in activities, art and lessons about the impact of plastic on ocean health, and the team are hoping that it will lead to more children and families choosing to avoid single-use plastic as much as possible in the future.'

Lived and went to school in London and at the aged of 17 joined IBM UK Limited on their youth employment scheme. That was in 1972 and in 1974 they, IBM, moved our Department to Cosham in Hampshire and I have the choice to choose my Girlfriend or a career. Hmmm
So I moved to Cosham in 1974 and worked for IBM for another 35 years making it 37 in total.
Married to Liz and I have four Children. Three from my first marriage and one with Liz. Three daughters and one son. Four Grandchildren all boys ages range from 2 - 7 years.
First went to see Chelsea play in 1963 and some 56 years later I am still fan. Sadly some say.
My hobbies are of course Football, Music which is everything from slow romantic stuff to Jazz but nothing too heavy.
34 years ago when I was 30 I gave up playing football locally and started running with my buddy Barry. 34 years later and having run the equivalent of round the world 1.5 times we are still running although a little slower these days.
Shaping Portsmouth
In 2013 having left IBM I was working for a Software company in Cosham and an old manager of mine at IBM rang me to ask if I could spare a couple of hours a month to join something called "Shaping The Future Of Portsmouth" who were a bunch of volunteers helping young businesses START and then GROW.
So began my Shaping career and for 4 years I either ran or helped run the Shaping Business & Enterprise team. In January 2017 the part time Director, Cheryl Buggy retired from the role and I reversed out of my volunteer role and have been the Director now for just over two years.
Shaping Portsmouth is a Public / Private partnership that have the mission to bring Business / Education & Our Community together to cooperate and collaborate on 12 specific projects.
From inspiring our next and future generations to aspire to reach for their stars, to making Portsmouth a World Class City to Visit, Live & Work. That is what i am trying to do with the Organisation and its army of Ambassadors & Volunteers.

Keiran O’Toole Managing Director of Rock Clothing
I am 19 years old this year, born and slightly bred in York, North Yorkshire. I was born at York District Hospital at the age of 0 if you couldn’t tell. I spent my primary school years at Carr Juniors and then moved up to York High School where I was educated for about half a term before moving to Portsmouth, aged 11. I was schooled in a state school, previously known as King Richard School (now known as Castle View Academy).
Whilst studying, I worked at a pub ferrying food to and from peoples mouths, then ferrying the leftovers to the bin. It was money, people say never to work just for money. At 16 years old, all I wanted in life was a £20 note. As my time at school came to an end, I started my A-Levels at Portsmouth College, studying Geography, Photography & Maths. I also changed jobs and worked in retail, which opened my eyes so much in terms of why having patients and earning respect is so important. Trust me, everyone needs to have a rubbish retail job at some point in their lives.
Whilst at college, I created my own social enterprise, Rock Clothing. I wanted to run a streetwear apparel brand that gave back and worked with young people on the anti-bullying agenda. With no experience in business, just a whole load of traumatic past experiences of bullying that guided me to this opportunity, it was a tough move but I’m still here 2 and a half years on.
Running Rock has been a life changer for me, I’ve met some of the most amazing and influential people ever. They’re not famous or well-known but they’ve been there for me and supported me through my journey of business and personal life. I’ve had some amazing opportunities, to attend events across Europe like the Safer Internet Forum 2018, in Brussels.
Over the last 2 years, I’ve won some amazing awards on local, national and international scales. I was awarded the Portsmouth Youth Civic Award by Lord Mayor Cllr David Fuller, at the Portsmouth Guildhall. At Barclays HQ, in London, I received my very own Princess Diana Award for my contribution to tackling bullying and I also was awarded top 20 status of Best UK Entrepreneurs by TransferWise at the Global HQ in London. None of these would be possible without the amazing people around me.
Since starting Rock in 2016, we’ve been on a crazy journey of ups and downs. We are continuously developing our clothing line to line up with day to day fashion trends, although this is a tough task we’re definitely exceeding our goals in this field for such a small organisation. Progress never stops though. In 2018, we decided to create a brand behind our anti-bullying work and have created the official Anti-Bullying Ambassador programme which schools are taking part in every week. There's always exciting news coming out of the woodwork and I can’t wait to share it all with you all.
Finally, Rock has created some amazing partnerships with some brilliant organisations around the city. We are amazed by our partnership with The Guildhall Trust, all of the work we do together is inspiring and changes peoples lives. We have recently partnered up with GoGeek Events, this is an amazing opportunity to get creative when trying to get the anti-bullying message across to young people and our longest partnership is with the Peter Ashley Activity Centres, I can’t thank them enough for their support. We run some amazing anti-bullying residential weekends in the fort for schools, this wouldn’t be possible without their support. We have lots of partners and I’d like to say thank you to all of them.
2019! 2019 will be a big year for Rock, we’ve just got our very own office space, we've started to look at the possibility of a full-time team of 4 and we’re working with more young people than we ever have previously. Bring it on 2019!

He has always been interested in writing, having started his first story when he was six years old. At various times since then, he has looked back, wondered what the hell he was doing spending so much time writing instead of having a life, given up, taught English in Egypt, come back again, run a computer company and a successful rare book dealership – and finally thrown up his hands in defeat and said:
“I give up! I can’t help writing, so I’ll have to just get on with it.”
Matt has written episodes of The Bill for ITV, national newspaper articles, stories, and books.
He is a keen local historian with a wide and detailed knowledge of Portsmouth history, and finds so many of the things he discovers about the city to be, yes, amazing. Hence the name of the small publishing house he started.
Matt also writes advertising copy, delivers entertaining talks and educational classes on local history, and teaches creative writing.

Has served as cabinet member for Resources and ran everything from HR, IT, Legal, Finance, Com's, Solar panels, building maintenance, Coroners, Registrars, Cemeteries, revenue, taxation, benefits and outside bodies. Keen on travel he has been actively involved in twinning. Outside of the council he likes hockey and cuisine. He has served 6 years as chair of Langstone harbour board and 4 as it's vice chairman.
Episode 29 This week on She made me do it Lulu & Daz are joined in the Studio by Wendy Budd teaching us the benefits of CBD oil. Wendy set up Budd's herbal Apothecary in 2012. She is a medical herbalist and member of the national institute of medical herbalists (nimh) and runs the apothecary with her son Rowan, a pompy girl and loves this waterfront city. The apothecary is situated in Albert rd in her mind the best place in Southsea. She loves that the Albert rd has remained indepentant with many thriving local businesses and is so pleased and proud to be a part of it. The health and well being vibe is growing strong in southsea what with portsmouth yoga and clean eating restaurants such as simply wholesome and wild thyme. This week we catch up With Stephen Morgan MP for Portsmouth South letting us know what he's been up to over the past 18months as a Parliamentary MP for the Labour Party,
Stephen Morgan is the first ever Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth South, a seat he took with a 21.5% swing – one of the largest in the country – in the 2017 General Election.
Stephen, who was born and bred in Portsmouth, studied at local schools and was the first in his family to go to university, graduating from the University of Bristol with an BSc (Hons) in 2002 and a postgraduate Masters of the Arts (MA) from London in 2003.
He started his working life in local government working across the Chief Executive’s Office, strategy, democratic, and community involvement sections at Portsmouth City Council and from 2008-2015 was Head of Community Engagement at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea where he oversaw a £3m investment programme in communities.
He has been Chief Executive of a medium-sized charity delivering infrastructure and volunteering support for the not-for-profit sector and delivering services including a centre for rough sleepers and targeted support for carers and young people.
In civic life he has been the chair of governors at Arundel Court Junior School, a trustee of Age UK Portsmouth and vice-chair of governors at Priory School. He is a longstanding community activist with a wide range of knowledge and understanding of local issues and needs. His interest in culture and regeneration led him to be the chair of the Portsmouth Cultural Consortium for many years.
In May 2016 he was elected onto Portsmouth City Council representing Charles Dickens ward and within five months elected the Labour Group Leader.
Before becoming an MP he was a Chief Executive of a medium-sized charity in Hampshire delivering infrastructure and volunteering support for the not-for-profit sector and delivering services including a centre for rough sleepers and targeted support for carers and young people.
He is Private Parliamentary Secretary for the Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, and sits on the Public Accounts Committee, the oldest select committee in Parliament, focusing on defence.
He has a keen interest in improving public services, promoting educational opportunities for all, tackling crime and supporting our armed forces.
As well as a round up on this weeks highlights, this week Darren and Lulu are joined in the Studio by Donna Jones talking over her 4 years as a city leader and combating internet abuse. Donna Jones was the first woman to hold the position of Leader of Portsmouth City council a post she took up in 2014. Donna is from Portsmouth, born and raised in North End. During the last 4 years she was the only woman in the country to be leading a Conservative lead city in the UK. She's a serving member of the judiciary and a has a back ground in banking & investments.
