We are two ordinary moms that are looking for inspiration anywhere we can find it. Our journey will cover people, groups, and even sometimes animals, that inspire us by making the world a better place. Our search for inspiration can sometimes take us on a bit of an unexpected trip, off on a tangent if you will. Everyone can use some inspiration, come join us.
This episode is full of inspiration and encouragement to let that little light of yours shine. We have a furniture maker in India who has taught more than 10,000 people to swim, some young people in the slums of Kenya who are finding ways to bring hope to themselves and others, and a World War II spy, who risked her life to bring the Allies valuable information that was used to help plan D-Day. There is definitely something that will inspire you in this episode.

Another fast and furious inspiration episode. Instead of our usual two shorts and a long, we have four shorts for you that will be sure to inspire. Arrrrgh. We were all set to get this podcast out on time, and then our dumb cat escaped and led us on a merry chase through the neighborhood. Anyways, this is a great episode. Lots of inspiration to be found. We start with a woman who is ensuring that Black children get the same opportunities to learn to the life saving ability to swim. Then we get into Bob Moore, who with his wife Charlee, created an international company out of an old mill and showed their employees that people were more important than profits. It's starting to get dark out early. As winter settles in, there is just more darkness. But if you look for it, you can find the light. Whether it is a nice cozy fire or a friend's smile, there is light to find. We are bringing the light with three stories this week. We were lucky enough to be able to interview Jon Slifka. You probably haven't heard of him, but you will, and for good reason. Jon is an amazing advocate for the disabled community in Connecticut and elsewhere. In a wheelchair himself, Jon has used his experience to help improve access and quality of life for other people with disabilities. And the part we love best about Jon is his amazing attitude. In a world where there is so much just negative and trashy stuff, it's nice to find some kindness, decency, and wholesomeness. We found some and we are willing to share it with you. Starting off, Jerry Seinfeld's wife, Jessica Seinfeld, is not only a superstar in the kitchen, with a lot of great cookbooks, but she is also helping young families in need in New York City. Some of our younger listeners may not be familiar with Charlie Brown and Snoopy, but our older listeners no doubt have some found memories of Charles Schulz's group in Peanuts. For 50 years, Charles Schulz brought wholesome humor to newspapers and television. Everyone should learn more about as well as learn from, Charles Schulz. Here in the States, we just celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This amazing civil rights leader is well-known around the world. What is not as well known is the story of Coretta Scott King, MLK's wife. This woman is so inspiring and played a huge role in Martin Luther King's success and the civil rights movement. This is a story that needs to be told and celebrated right alongside Martin Luther King's story, because his story is intertwined with her story. So many things to talk about, Coretta's story will take two episodes. We also have a heartwarming story of some kids in Minnesota looking out for their classmates with disabilities and a Native American runner who is building a community across the country with other indigenous people. So like much of the world, we are suffering through a heatwave this week. Every year it is just getting hotter and hotter. Our planet is on fire (in some places literally). We need to muster all the positive energy we can so we must seek out the good and the light. So we are having a very weird week, with snow in April. Hasn't happened in Portland since 1934. So, while we huddle in for the Spring sleet and snow, we bring gifts of inspiration. Amy tells about a construction company that not only employs people who need a second chance, they also provide temporary lodging to help them get back up on their feet and these incredible temporary homes are popping up all around the country. Teresa takes on the incredible Audrey Hepburn, who may be most famous for her acting career, but made a far more lasting impact after retiring from acting and taking on being an ambassador and advocate for Unicef. She spent her life feeding children all over the world. Finally, despite all of the horrors going on in Ukraine, there are some more amazing stories coming out about ordinary people doing extraordinary things in Ukraine. Yay! Our first Christmas episode! The holidays can be filled with so much joy, but they can also be a time people struggle. This episode is all about finding hope in the holidays and a reminder that everyone makes a difference. We start off with Amy talking about The Thirteen Gifts, a story of tragedy that leads to hope and kindness for a family and how they pay that forward in love. Then Teresa deep dives into the holiday classic, It's a Wonderful Life, and the story of George Bailey, a man that is given the gift of seeing a world where he never existed and shown how much impact even the little things he did made in the lives of the people around him. It is such a great reminder that everyone makes a difference! Then there is the story of the miraculous Christmas Truce, where for one brief Christmas Day in 1914, there was hope in one of the most grisly fields of combat in World War I. Just one more week until Thanksgiving. November is moving fast! Time to take a moment to slow down, breathe deep, and find some inspiration. As we move into September, we are going to do a few stories on mental health and mental health awareness. Mental health is a huge issue worldwide and more needs to be done to help those who are suffering as well as more intervention to help prevent mental illness and eliminate the stigma of mental health issues. In this episode, we start off with New York's Trash Walker who is bringing awareness to the massive waste going on in our cities and what can be done to divert unused goods from our dumps to those in need. Then Amy deep dives into Chef David Chang, who has battled mental health through his career but has still become a world-renowned chef and restauranteur. His story is inspiring. Amy also tells us the story of how singer Jack Johnson is working cleaning up the world from plastics and the father-son Ridwell recycling project in Portland, Oregon. The Olympics may be over, but August is still our Olympics month, and there is still some inspiration to be squeezed out of the Games. So the Olympics have come to a close. We were definitely inspired by so many of the Olympic stories, both past and present. This episode is CRAMMED with inspiring athletes. First, though, Teresa tells the tale of Grandma Gatewood, who in her mid-sixties, hiked the 2,050 mile Appalachian Trail on her own, and followed it up by doing the Oregon Trail by herself! Our first interview episode! And its with the owner of Peacebunny Island, Caleb Smith, who Amy first discussed in Episode 17. For those not familiar, Peacebunny Island is an actual island, where Caleb Smith raises bunnies to be used for birthday parties, schools, old folks' homes, and even as comfort animals following tragedies like school shootings. Amy hits Calebs 10 key values, which we can all learn from, we have our interview with Caleb. Sorry for the audio quality, we had to change recording methods unexpectantly, but Caleb may very well be one of the most impressive 16 year-olds you ever hear. His attitude and maturity are amazing and what he has accomplished is incredible! It is a must hear interview. Teresa follows up with Robert Kenny, the YouTube star of his popular channel Dad, How do I? This dad teaches kids without a father figure how to do everything from changing a tire to having personal integrity, and he does it with so much kindness. All month during the month of May, we are going to focus on stories of moms that have done spectacular things or have made great impacts on our world. This week, Teresa does a deep dive on Irena Sendler. Never heard of her? Well, you need to change that. Happy Mother's Day! We hope that you have a wonderful Mother's Day. We know for some of you it is a hard day- and we would love to hear from you about your mothers too.
