Multi-channel operator and fellow transatlantic psychonaut The Hefker Girl (@talia-rudofsky) has a singularly unified “practice” (if we have to put a label on it), pulling from Pythagoras, 1980s fringe cults, uncharted waters, warped and dusty platines to create something distinctly off-kilter. She operates in several different milieux; I first encountered her assisting with Groovetrackers on WKCR (see DOS015: Prezzo) as their media maven of sorts, but is equally at home on the design / booking / graphics / archiving / curation fronts in the back ends of bookshops and cash-only bars that seem to uphold what is left of the East Village’s nous against the beige tide that swarms and chokes. Blue World Below (named without awareness of the FIsh Bowl world she has created for herself) dives deep into untracklisted realms, fathoms of telepathic fish and echoes of chillout rooms and future visions from the end of history. Describes herself as a sailor at sea, armed with a dub compass to guide her through the uncharted depths of dance music and inviting the crowd into the haze, the suspension.

If there are any DJs I want to uplift here or else, it's the ones who I know have a deep knowledge of the histories and many sounds of 'dance music' -- not for want of being a know it all, but of gaining histories and contexts that would be otherwise lost in the algorithmic shuffle. Nashville-born, Montréal-based @esme3xtace is one of the best DJs of late I've heard make pure wormholes of techno, the kind that you can properly shut out the world and lose your body in. As someone who was also into this sound when I was their age, it gives me joy to see early-to-mid 20-somethings have the chances to share that kind of knowledge. Esme's mix feels like you're on cruise control, it's gone midnight and the air smells of petrichor, faint diesel, and distant flowers. Many shades of techno flow across each other like paint. Now that I'm back in NYC I can practice on turntables - all episodes for the foreseeable will be done from my studio, 2 decks 1 mixer, faults pops crackles skips and all. Haven't taken stock of what I have here in years so I'm treating my stacks as a record store and wondering what I was thinking sometimes. This month has a lot of late-90s/early-00s tech house rollers/swingers (think early Fabric mixes by Richards/Francis/Marsh et al, along with either original (New) Jersey house or Europeans integrating that sound. Overall there's sensation of tunnelling forwards, occasional moments of glitch and distortion, I might have well recorded onto thrice-burned tape. I first encounter Stefan though through Casa Del Popolo, the Main’s main den of épatering the bourgeoisie since the 90s, when they booked me for what was only the second Days of Steam night after the first at Rye Wax. The old booth was set up like you were in a chapel, dim as hell for me but enough of a remove from the audience without being too removed. They’re a longtime organizer in Montréal activist circles, the mind of @freecityradio, with a CV too long to summarize here but one that shows genuine belief and investment in the causes he champions. I’d seen them years back before we knew each other, as part of the city’s experimental undercurrents, with releases of introspective piano for Howl Arts alongside local luminaries Sam Shalabi and Peter Burton and mainstays d’la marge like Aural Canyon and Beacon Sound. Tapestries of field recordings and plunderphonics, part of a long tradition of musique actuelle in the city without intentionally trying to be so. The mix he sent over is almost entirely as of writing recent pieces, with compositions (what they all feel like more than ‘pieces’ or ‘tracks’) from Berkeley, Brooklyn, Brazil, Houston, Jaffa, Milan, Montréal - the sound of the uncertainty and rage of the now, but never restoring to despondency, moreso righteousness."It is my pleasure to share these tracks with you. On a basic level these tracks were shared mostly by friends in the context of exchanges and ongoing collaborations with folks in cities all over the place, around creating content for Radio AlHara in Palestine and beyond. Restrained freakout sonics and subcranial rhythms from @icarus-redux — “earth-moving kicks, baleful, eyes-dilated synths, and rough, mostly unsampled breakbeats. Fog machine bathing all as one.” Inspired as an artist by a mixed bag of artists and theorists that cast light on the darkness - Fisher, Graeber, Preciado, Shadow, Sprinkles, Tiqqun, Weatherall - this mix is one of the first I’ve heard that approaches AI-assisted technologies (demuxing, polyrhythmic mixing, etc) in a way that reminds me of early cut-and-paste techniques or Richie Hawtin’s Decks x EFX mixes that reassemble contexts on a micro-level, not just layering tracks over each other but reconstructing them, and here it’s far more subtle. It’s enticing and unnerving to me but such is the effect of the dawn of a new form of technology that has the principle for use and abuse. Here it’s done to only positive effect, again highlighting the spaces between the notes, the snatches of memory that flit through your brain. A lot of the tracks from the early 2010s are records I remember hearing and playing when I lived in Leeds, which I had associated with a very different scene that I naively believed at the time would never truly take off Stateside. At the same time, Disclosure were getting big then and I thought the US would pass them over. From downloading italo and house rips off of Bicep's old blog to seeing them headline warehouses in Brooklyn that charge $40+ admission. Mais je divague...

2006 or so, in Montréal briefly as Mum’s car was being repaired, I’m passing time at BANQ ripping selections from anything under “Avant/Électronique” that looked interesting. One of those was the Warp 10th anniversary compilation which exposed me to Richard’s work as Sweet Exorcist. Five years later I’m studying in Yorkshire and despite never visiting Sheffield then or since (so far) I devoured much of his work with Cab Vol and their peers. Fast forward to today and I’m preparing to eventually lecture on the post-punk socioeconomics and cite his material heavily. Look through my decade-plus archive of mixes and something he had a hand in will invariably show up.
This is an hour of works by him I liked, no regard to time space or context. Less of his newer stuff or collaborations than I wanted, but i'll be playing his music for the rest of my DJing days. Artificial intelligence. Burroughs’ cutups and dream sequences, concrète experiments recorded in a South Yorkshire attic. Trance deconstruction from the height of the trance era (in the vein of Mark Fell / Lorenzo Senni). A whacked out collaboration with Ministry that sounds like Severed Heads in hi-definition. A brief interview clip of him and Stephen Mallinder from 1990 when they were living in Chicago and working with Marshall Jefferson. A lot of solidly forged works on how this really could be the end of it all. Tired of all the artists I appreciate dying in short order, and I know it will only accelerate from here.

Nashville's finest @mischa-lively has been holding it down with his @new_love_unlimited label and event series in Nashville for some time now, and his earnest touch with electronics buoys a necessary voice in a city known for its cultural and historic power in the American music industry, but overlooked by many off the usual dance music itinerary. I reached out to him this summer, drawing an Oblique Strategy to serve as a prompt, and having drawn 'think of the radio' we jettisoned directness in favour of "the glass prism as a multidimensional object". Starting with Crystal Ball era Prince, offering playful advice and guidance, Mischa's mix spirals down Drexciyan wormholes, restrained riddims, acidic peaks, his favourite Derrick Carter remix (not who you would expect), dance hypnotics, and contemplative and reflective energies.

Starting off the series is Vancouver-born, UK-based composer Norah Lorway (@norahlo), one of my dearest friends who is a formidable (and suitably lauded) artist and lecturer. Their label Xylem (which I’ve released on) has been releasing algorithmic and electroacoustic compositions since 2012. Their mix for us plays like a nostalgic mixtape where evocations of childhood and the club exist in tandem.

“I viewed the mix as a 2 hour club set in isolation - starts slow, ends slow. I wanted to include a wide range of music the veers towards hedonistic while remaining fully functional and rhythmically interesting. It’s a fine balance, in particular for the rave and trance tracks towards the end of the mix. I also made a point to include a number of Madison producers - it really feels like the scene is about to pop and I’m excited to see what happens with it. I throw a monthly party in Madison with some friends. The next on is May 18 with Harry Cross. I’ll be opening up for Francis Inferno Orchestra on June 15 and Sandboards on July 7. I met host Kalen by chance when I was in San Francisco last year, they were working at the @darkentriesrecords store when I visited, hit it off and was duly impressed by his passion / nerdery — kept up infrequent correspondence, then at the start of January when I made this mix just off the cuff I sent it over and he asked if it was good to broadcast. It’s a lot of early and mid 90s house and techno, all mixed in one take on two mismatched turntables, a dodgy mixer, and faulty earbuds as I didn’t have actual headphones on me. None of the records or gear are mine — was catsitting for a friend and using his gear.

Montreal in winter is an odd place. Temperatures can drop to -40 as Arctic blasts stream down from the north, everything turns into shades of brilliant gray with the occasional flash of orange from the ubiquitous traffic cones. Construction never ends, the surfaces are always mottled, a million posters tear apart and flutter in the windstorms. I’ve moved about a lot, experienced a lot of sometimes tragic changes in my life in the past year or so, and even though I know I’m always going to feel like an outcast here - même si je parle français, même si j’ai de vrais amis ici - I still feel like this is the best place for me right now.

The scene here is noted for its liveliness but how much of that is just because it feels like the only major city in the country that can host a thriving arts community in a place with comparatively affordable housing. Five people I knew from Toronto also decamped to Montreal this summer because rents had skyrocketed and the stress of working 2+ jobs to maintain any kind of creativity or life-outside-of-work was crushing. Those that stay are faced with an ever decreasing number of level venues, increasing by-laws, rents, and new condos that go up with tenants that complain about the music from the bars nearby. If there’s any complaint I hear about the scene here, aside from a lack of cross-genre communication among parties - and linguistic/cultural barriers (a lot of young Anglo transplants making their dreams come true from elsewhere in the country - see point on rent above) - it’s that the music is either stuck in ‘disco nostalgia’ or ‘rave revival’, with tempos reaching breakneck / fever pitch speeds and little room for variety. I don’t think it’s entirely true but the scene isn’t immune from a lot of DJs always playing like they are at peak time all the time, with little room for nuance. It is there - you just have to look for it.

I usually play slower but I tried to bring it up, compress the feelings I get from these parties, and this city, between the intro - cold, gray, introspective - and the fade, in between is just me pressing play and letting things ride out. I don’t like to plan too much, but I like to challenge myself. I’m in the process of restarting my radio show - Days Of Steam - as a club night as well, and try to focus on the slower tempos and the spaces between the notes. Sometimes, though, you just gotta max is out, find space in the speed, un excès de vitesse.
