It's Friday and that can only mean it's time to gear up for the weekend and tune into an all new episode of the Valiant Central Podcast! This week, Martin and Paul discuss the evolution of comic book art over the past couple of decades and what sets Valiant apart from other publishers. We dive a little bit into the art process, then talk about the latest sales numbers and what those numbers really mean.
This week on VCP, Paul and Martin talk about some of what made the classic Valiant universe great, and sometimes not so great. We focus mostly on Bloodshot, Ninjak and Magnus but dive a bit into some of the others we'd like to see come back. Welcome to a new episode of the Valiant Central Podcast. As we enter our 30s, we figure we would take a step back from shenanigans to get into some serious Valiant Comics discussion.
We start off talking about what it means to be a Valiant fan, and the interesting dynamic that we have seen among the groups and various podcasts over the past couple of years and how varied our origins and experiences are. We also dive a bit into the latest issue of Ninjak, how amazing Stormwatch was under Warren Ellis, and how Valiant's event books have evolved over the years from Harbinger Wars, to Armor Hunters, to Book of Death.

This week, Paul and Martin are joined by a special guest, Joshua Schwartz from band, A Sound of Thunder. Some of you may remember the band from their "Punk Mambo" single that was released with the Valiant Humble Bundle some months back. They have been hard at work on a killer follow-up album called "Tales from the Deadside" which is currently on Kickstarter and is inspired by the latest run of Shadowman. First, we talk about James Asmus taking over writing duties in Unity with issues #23 and #24 and discuss what this could mean for the future of Unity and whether it means the book is headed towards cancellation.
Then, we get into a heated discussion abou retailer incentives. It seems that Valiant is pretty happy with how the Book of Death sales went and would like to offer more retailer incentives in the future. We don't have any details yet, but we spend a good bit of time talking about whether we would buy yet another retailer incentive, whether it's fair to fans, and Martin goes on a bit of a rant about how mad these shenanigans are making him.

We talk a little bit about our move to All-Comic, discuss Valiant sales numbers for May 2015, and a bit on the September solicitations. As we get into a discussion of X-O Manowar and Dead Drop, we look at some of what Marvel and DC are doing with their characters and discuss whether long-running characters should simply be allowed to die and replaced or if their stories should just keep getting rehashed to appease the fans.

We tackled all kinds of interesting topics from working at Valiant, his dislike of Ninjak, working on HowToons, future projects, education, Dungeons and Dragons and...cannibalism? We dive deep into his creative process and what makes him such a unique talent. Huge thanks to Tom for joining us.

In their last couple of episodes, they shared Josh’s wife Karyn’s experience teaching Harbinger Volume 2: Renegades to a group of high school students so we talk a little bit about that, the importance of comics in education, and delve a little into the past and talk some Valiant history from the publisher’s previous incarnation. Now that The Valiant is over, we wanted to take a look back at the series as a whole with a discussion on the Immortal Enemy, the path of the Geomancer, and whether Gilad’s plan is really the best for the future of the Valiant universe. We also delve into the evolution of the events of The Valiant to the just announced Book of Death.
We recorded this episode before the full announcement of The Book of Death came out so we jumped into a breaking news session at the end of the episode and discuss the details of the announcement – oh yeah, we’re excited! Ross also works at ComicLink, an online auction house dealing with high-end comic books.
