Graying Rainbows Coming Out LGBT+ Later in Life: Recent Episodes

Graying Rainbows is a community that supports people of all genders and sexual identities, with a focus on the challenges of Coming Out LGBT+ Later in Life. We use interviews, history, and storytelling to connect people who are new to the Rainbow Community. Graying Rainbows is released on the first Monday each month.
Graying Rainbows launched in November 2018. It's been an eventful three years, so this episode is a little different. It contains some advice for new listeners, reflections on lessons learned, and a brief look toward the future.
Now that there are over 50 episodes I have done some re-organizing to make it easier to find certain content.

This episode of Graying Rainbows is a review of Billie Jean King's new autobiography "All In." I highly recommend the audio version because it is read by King and her emotions come through. King's story includes "coming out later in life." She describes the toll that the delay took on her health and happiness, as well as the new sense of freedom she discovered when she was finally out to herself and the world.

This episode is an interview with Julie Sondra Decker, author of "The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality." Most people acknowledge that sexual orientations includes homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals, but there is actually a fourth possibility. A person who identifies as asexual does not feel sexual attraction to anyone. Unfortunately, many assume that this represents a disease when actually it is part of normal human diversity. We discuss what asexuality IS as well as what it is NOT. Asexuality is about attraction NOT behavior.
Our goal is to embrace human diversity and acknowledge that each person's identity should be respected as equally valid. If the idea of asexuality is new to you, I hope you will listen to this informative interview.

Dr. Larry Millhoffer is a retired physician who is grateful to have been with his husband for 45 years. Over that time the meaning of "coming out" has evolved, but a pivotal time in his life was caring for the first patients with AIDS as a young physician in the early 80's. During our conversation he reflects on the challenges of caring for patients in a time of fear and uncertainty, and on how the AIDS crisis changed the LGBT community.
Because our community lost so many people during this period I think it is extremely valuable to hear from those who lived through that time. As a gay physician Dr. Millhoffer brings a perspective that we don't usually get to hear.

Ever since Graying Rainbows launched in 2018 we have had concerns about people's privacy (and safety) on Facebook. I recently changed the Group from Private to Hidden, but then I realized that group membership is still visible.
Some of those who need the group the most need total privacy and maybe anonymity. That is why I am moving the group over to MeWe and you will need an invite to join.

I discovered Ronni Sanlo through her long running blog series about LGBT history and I am excited to have her as a guest on Graying Rainbows. Ronni was one of many LGBT parents who lost custody of her children due to Anita Bryant's homophobic campaign in the late 1970's. In this episode we talk with retired Navy captain Eric Kearsley about his personal journey and the unique way he and his wife dealt with the fact that he is gay. Even though Kearsley "came out" publicly 15 years ago, he remains in a committed relationship with his wife. His story is an important reminder that there is no "one size fits all" way to come out LGBT+ Later in Life.

In this episode of Graying Rainbows I talk with Cassandra Contave and Aisha Bonner-Cozad, two researchers who are spearheading research into LGBT+ aging at the AARP. This includes their landmark Maintaining Dignity Study, which highlighted some of the unique challenges facing LGBT+ elders. Graying Rainbows Episode 12 is an interview with respected LGBT+ historian Dr. Susan Stryker.
Her book "Transgender History" is very highly regarded and brings a valuable perspective to an aspect of LGBT+ history that has been largely invisible. Although she focuses on what happened in the United States after WW2, Stryker also reflects on how Transgender people have been treated by both Feminists and the larger LGBT+ community. The story is eye-opening and full of lessons for us all.

Some elders are going back into the closet in an effort to avoid discrimination in housing and healthcare.

This week's guest is Rick Clemons, host of the Life Uncloseted podcast. Rick is a life coach who works with gay men on their coming out journeys. Recently he has expanded his work to include helping people of diverse backgrounds escape from the closets that hold them back.
In this episode Rick reflects on the fact that whenever one starts, the coming out journey never ends. The key is to keep moving forward and to strive to learn and grow along the way.

When I first came at at age 60, one of the first books I read was Loren Olson's book Finally Out: Letting Go of Living Straight. It is a unique combination of personal memoir and guide for men who are coming out later in life. Dr. Olson has been a psychiatrist for over 40 years so he brings a valuable perspective to the conversation.

Lillian Faderman's comprehensive history The Gay Revolution: The Story of the Struggle takes us from 1948 through the US Supreme Court decision that legalized Gay marriage in 2015. But for the first episode of Graying Rainbows we tried to focus on the events before Stonewall. Post WW2 was a very difficult time to be Gay in America and it is important to remember how far we have come, especially in these frightening times.
The focus of Graying Rainbows will be on sharing resources and storytelling, but I think it is essential that LGBT+ citizens of all ages become more knowledgeable of our history, so this will be a monthly feature of the show.

Dr. Campbell has been podcasting since 2006 (Brain Science and Books and Ideas), but this show represents a significant departure from her previous work. Although she will continue to interview authors, there will be a shift toward community building through sharing personal stories.
