A podcast for musicians of all backgrounds to learn how to run your music career like a business! Whether you're a weekend warrior or a hired gun; whether you play cover songs or originals, Cover Band Confidential is your weekly source on how to make GOOD money playing music!
Those of us use the Billboard Hot-100 Chart as a source for song ideas have been noticing some big changes in the patterns of song chart lifecycles. Dan built a whole thing to look into that, and in this week's (multimedia!) episode, we look at what those numbers show us, and what it means for people trawling the charts for cover song ideas.
Because this episode refers to some visual content, you might want to check the YouTube version of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPDZAXjVc7g

Sometimes reality slaps you in the face and you realize it's time for a rethink. And sometimes it's a slow burn of increasing frustration with things not working before you get what's going on. This week the boys talk about when to stop doubling down on something that's not working, and how to use that moment of a project productively.

Okay so we were being a little dramatic last week saying we'd identified the ONLY three things you needed. OBVIOUSLY there's more! So here's four mor things you need to succeed: Systems, Contacts, Creative, and Data. This week we dive deep on each of those concepts.
AND THEN! Speaking of "data": Introducing the Cover Band Confidential listener survey! Please go to this link to let us know what you love and what you hate about this podcast. The only way we know how to move forward is from YOUR input, so please let 'er rip: https://take.supersurvey.com/QU3DLFS86

Okay hear us out. Insurance is interesting. That's why we did a whole episode on it, rounding up the thoughts we've dripped into lots of episodes in the past. This week the guys tackle the whole deal with gear insurance, annual or event-based liability coverage, who they use, what they pay, what's covered, and what you can and should do about it.

Exactly what to watch out for in your OWN behavior. That's right friends it's both a gossip-fest AND a moment of self reflection. Regular listeners will remember our band coaching session with Creston Heltzel and his band Alt95 from about a year ago. Well in the last few months the Patrons in the Slack have been witness to a whole new opportunity for Creston, one many of us have wondered about. He's just started his Sales Tech training at Sweetwater! We chat about what the interview and onboard process has been like, what it's like to work at Music Disneyland, how to set a band up for success after you depart, and other fine fun things.

Seasons change in the cover musician landscape! Gigs that were a lock dry up, relationships change, and the world moves on. But do you? In this episode we cover the attitude to take when things don't go your way, and how to bounce back strong.

This week the boys tackle a topic that came up on the Patreon Slack: When a setlist totally rocks all the way through, what do you do? Keep it around and play it at the next show? And the one after that? Or toss it and start the next one from scratch? Or take what learning you can and use it to inform the next one? The pros and cons abound!

This week the boys discuss a well-trodden topic in a new way: How much content in a backing track is too much? Where does it cross the line and become theater instead of live music? When is that okay?
Also a discussion of our favorite and least favorite creepy crawlies. It makes sense, trust us.

Sometimes you find yourself in a rough situation, personnel-wise. People don't work out, or ones that used to don't anymore. That's tough. But when the Internet INSISTS you stay in that situation, while simultaneously complaining about you being in that situation? That's a whole other story.
Good talk this Thanksgiving week, folks! Adam's had not much going on since getting back from his adventures, but Dan's had a big weekend of big new growth, including a new head to feed who more than earned his keep. Takeaway of the episode: Your value is the only thing you have control over.
Have a great turkey day, American listeners, and a very fine plain old Thursday to everyone else!
Adam's back from outpatient procedures, illness, and adventure for yet another dip into the world of band life! This week: Dusting off holiday repertoire, a BIG shout-out to BandHelper, and Dan talking about bringing in a new don't-call-him-a-roadie to help with gear so he can shmooze.
A quickie for a sickie this week: Adam's under the weather and needs to try and save his pep for (hopefully) a gig on Saturday. So we catch up quick, talk a little about the power of networking and Musician Karma, and send him back to bed with his soup and tea.
Thay healthy out there folks! It's not Covid right now, but the current flu is no joke!
Some songs seem straightforward, but when you dig in they're crazy hard. Others seem like they'll be a real challenge, but figuring them out is satisfying and easier than expected. What have you got like that??
No clickbait in THAT episode title! This week the boys talk about what it takes to have pricing leverage in the conversation for bookings with bars and clubs. It's both easier and harder than you think!
This episode is brought to you by MJ's "Thriller" and every note ever written by Danny Elfman. Happy Halloween, everybody!!
A wedding is a very special, high stakes gig calling for very special attention, knowledge, and care. Check it this week as your boys discuss the details of weddings, who to pay attention to, what matters vs what doesn't, and what it takes to make the lady in white happy.

We keep seeing people complaining about their bandmates on social media. They're lazy! Or they're demanding! They're unmotivated! They're perfectionists!
Maybe the real issue is misaligned intentions. This episode, we dig into the hard conversations and deep honestly required to get a band all lined up on a purpose and mission--and what to do when it's clear you're not.
All things are in harmony and balance here at CBC. Not everything breaks our way, but in the end, you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both, and then you have an episode of a podcast about band stuff.
This week's (international!) listener question boils down to: How do you create stage signage for maximum impact? Do people still do big backdrops, or is there a more modern way?
Thanks to Northern Ireland's own "Suckin' Diesel" for the question--see them at http://www.suckin-diesel.co.uk/
Look. Live Music Karaoke can be great. Like REALLY great. When it's great it's AMAZINGLY great.
But it's a high crowd-contact gig. So when it's not great, it's REALLY not great. This week your boys break down how to have Karaoke work well in a crowd, what to watch out for, and how to make it through when you're beset by entitled, drunken, jackholes. Enjoy!!
It's time to start planning those Halloween gigs, boys and ghouls! But which seasonal tunes should you set your ghostly eye upon? If you pick the right song you'll be sure to s'kill-it-on the big night! As always, we're here to spirit you toward the right answer!
I always feel like... somebody's listening to my podcast!
Your boys give a big ol' update on the details of their various gigging lives, and then weigh in on a listener email from our new Patron Mark: Is the life of a full-time musician still a viable thing in 2022? Can it be something to aspire toward?

Following a great week of gigs and sales, the boys are back with some revisited thoughts about how we present ourselves and our brands on the Socials. How much do you like hanging around with needy, demandy, take-y people? Not much, right? Versus people who are generous, interactive, fun, and social? Well what makes you think your social media presence is any different? Load your salad with marshmallows and engage your folks BETWEEN gig invitations for top social media win!
This slightly-delayed episode is brought to you by audio driver kernel panic!
After a big ol recap on our recent killer gigs, the opportunities afforded to us by snowballing success, the space left as competitors move up-market, and whether glasses are a good idea, the guys spitball an idea inspired by nitro cold brew coffee: What if musicians did a loyalty program? Interesting! Send us your thoughts at coverbandconfidentail@gmail.com!
Great listener question this week: How do we cut through all the confusion about product reviews, slice through the price issues, and come to the crystal clarity of in-ear monitoring?

This week, in addition to general catch-up, we discuss a listener question: Whether tis nobler to copy the accent of the original vocalist. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's a complicated answer, leading us into a whole range of interesting music-nerd philosophizing.
Shortie but goodie this week! A Slack discussion about a song from Dan's youth leads us into a conversation about the most powerful thing to keep in mind when selecting songs: What memories you can tickle, what mental journeys you can send the audience on. In short, the details of weaponizing the audience's nostalgia for fun and profit!
The boys return to form after what seems like a whole summer apart! After a catch-up about gig details and some good gear gets, we address questions from listener Adam Bartlow: How come nobody's taking free merch, and what's the deal with being a band called to cover cancellations?
This week we talk with band leader (and top-tier patron) Creston Heltzel of Alt95 from Cleveland, Ohio about how he ended up in Australia building recording studios, how Nashville can suck for creatives, and how band coaching helped his new project get off the ground and onto the stage.

Welcome to the second half of the Cover Band Coaching Session with Alt95, a 90's-oriented cover band out of Cleveland, coming to the market fresh with a ton to prove. This week, a variety of topics that all end up the same place: Does the audience care? What REALLY matters?
Please join us on http://patreon.com/coverbandconfidential for excellent band chat and a whole range of bonuses up to and including coaching sessions!
This week's #musicianmonday post is a story about someone leaving a crappy review of my band and what I did to get past it and move on. As you get opportunities to play bigger shows or municipal events, you may experience folks who aren't stoked on your group because they didn't have to pay for it and weren't necessarily there to see you. This is how you should respond to those.

Our Patreon member Creston Heltzel of the Cleveland 90s band Alt95 is a patron in the highest tier, which entitles him to a live coaching session with Adam and Dan--which he and his bandmates generously allowed us to share with you!
This is part 1 of 2 of that coaching session, where we cover song selection, setlist design, and the band's branding and art choices so far. Next week we'll talk about social media, authenticity, being focused on the audience, and the zen of being a front man!

Sometimes things happen in your band that aren't how you want things to go. People get upset about stuff. Whose job is it to deal with that? What!? Yours!? WTF!!?
Yeah, but no, though. It really is. And it's always an opportunity to create deeper relationships with your players, a bigger sense of yourself as a band leader, and a greater connection between the people in your project and their own value.

DO NOT skip this one! Our special guest this week is our numero uno amigo Mike Schulte of the Cedar Rapids, IA mega-band The Pork Tornadoes.
One thing we've noticed about Pork T's event is, there always seems to be a little roster of corporations all lined up to give money or other goodies in return for promo. How do you hook that up? What's it worth? What can it provide you? Mike's the MAN to break all that down. Adam and Dan left this conversation with their ears ringing, and you will too!

Some episodes have a lot of meat. Others have a lot of meatballs!
Everything from Jamiroquai to duelling piano. From gilt-framed Elvii to relative minors to cat-6 cable. This week's episode is the DEFINITION of "a free-wheeling ramble"!
This week's #musicianmonday post is the audio from a Youtube video posted on October 15th, 2021. In it Adam discusses how most people who say they want to pursue music professionally aren't willing to challenge their mindset enough to make things happen.
If this resonates with you or you think it would resonate with someone else please share with your friends & bandmates!

Today we deal with the main thing that matters in the entire universe--that, alarmingly, most people seem oddly unaware of: Dan's new band had its first gig.
Oh and also, we unpack a listener email what happens when about another band encroaches on your brand. What to do? How to respond? We deal with it all.

A couple points of high Internet drama this week. First. a conversation kicked off by a comment about the potential relationship between original acts and their tributes.
Second a followup/clarification on a comment of Adam's about being "the entertainment, not the help". Know your value, and learn to say no! Everybody wins, except the jerks who expect you to act like "the help".
What do you do when that venue you've played at for years suddenly changes direction and you're OUT? How to move on gracefully (or, you know, NOT gracefully) to whatever's going to be next.
Lots of activity in ya-boys gigging lives this week... all overshadowed by a glorious Gig From Heck story. It comes from our buddy Martin of the band SmallTalk, all the way from Brighton, England. Ever find yourself playing a wedding... by surprise? Martin did!
SmallTalk: https://www.facebook.com/smalltalkcovers
While Adam was climbing stairs in Colorado, Dan was busy getting the new band ready for its first exposure to the world, including lots of things that are likely of interest for all the rest of us!
Lots of moving parts for yer boys this week, from basketball-forced schedule changes to near-misses with stage fireworks. But the main topic has to do with persistence, the lack of sour grapes, and opportunities that come when they come.
Many topics on this week's episode, including:
And then MOST critically: People in our scene's view that $100 is the standard and anything else is impossible. Get in touch with your value, Band People!
Sometimes you luck out and something amazing drops into your lap. What do you do with that--wing it, or learn to deliver in a way that honors the request? This week we cover the kinds of chances that pop up in the cover artist world and what it takes to rise to the occasion!
And on the off chance you need a Children Of Bodum coffee mug, please see our linktree: https://linktr.ee/coverbandconfidential
This week, spurred by Dan's new project and his emerging go-to-market strategy, we kick off a Whole Big Talk on the topic of "is it legal to play covers"? Answer: Yes. But it takes licensing and permission. Can you even stream and sell your versions? Yes! But ditto! So listen here and find out the deal.
Friends, it's Episode 200. We did our best to have this episode not be totally consumed by the milestone of the number Two Hundred.... And we failed. It's our 200th episode and that's a big deal no matter how you slice it.
Also Smash Mouth. Plus of course, Tears For Fears. Also Sir Duke. It's not NOT those things. And yet: 200!
They can't all be winners! It's just as true about podcast episodes as it is about gigs! So what do you do when it doesn't go your way? Do you spiral, or get creative?
And no it's not about sportsball. The Superbowl halftime show revealed something very interesting about changing demographics and age/era nostalgia. It's our job, as weaponizers of nostalgia, to tap into what that show showed.
Also Dave Grohl is wrong about something. There we said it.
Looking to show up in your scene as a competent participant, ready for paying work and opportunities to fall your way? Learn to exhibit these five signs of professionalism in a musician's behavior!
Is something about how you approach the cover band business getting in your way? Sapping your joy, costing you gigs and opportunities? Maybe these toxic mindsets need looking at, in yourself and in the people in your sphere.
Also HEY NEW ARTWORK! How cool is that??
You got em! Now how do you keep em? This episode: our strategies, tips, and techniques for grabbing those organic bar randos and turning them into repeat followers!
This week's episode addresses struggles we all go through. As performers and artists, sometimes it feels like it hits us uniquely hard. Help is available at the National Suicide Hotline, at 800-273-8255.
It's worth acknowledging: We're in a tough moment. Again. Which we should have been out of, like, a WHILE ago. But we're not. Band folks seem to be struggling in a way that is new and yet oh so familiar. So let's address it; how do you handle those hard moments? What gets you through?
We're back from the new year FULLY this time--Dan's out of isolation, things are moving, and despite the world being in a weird covid-y place, we're still making plans and moving forward with stuff.
A lot of good gear talk happening this week, then a dive into the world of backing tracks. There are original studio multitracks out there to be used, for those what have the wherewithal. This conversation might be the first of several to dig into what that looks like.
The more things change, friends. Wasn't it this time last year we were feeling like we were supposed to be all done with this Covid thing by now, but the end just kept getting further away? Seems somehow... familiar.
Only difference is, this time around one of us is actively plague-ridden. Listen up to find out who is and who isn't-yet.
The ball is falling on 2021, friends! And as the Earth hits this arbitrary point in its cycle, we pause to look at the year just passed with all its successes, challenges, and growth opportunities. And we look forward to the next one, full of opportunities, risks, possibilities, and uncertainty.
What are you thinking about, here at the turning of the year? Let us know at coverbandconfidential@gmail.com!
The holiday is upon us! Quick update of gigs and events, a sudden change of plan around Dan's new project, and the beginning of our thinking to review the year-just-passed and plan for the year-just-starting.
Hit us up with your year-end reflections at coverbandconfidential@gmail.com!
Oh sure--in past years we've spouted opinions. And yes: "Christmas Shoes" will always reign supreme.
But this year we've gotten SCIENTIFIC. We crowd-sourced a bracket of 16 of the worst of the worst of holiday nonsense, and with the help of a certain lead-singer-and-spouse as a tiebreaker, we narrowed it down to the VERY WORST Christmas song of all time.
Here are the tracks we started with, for those of you following along at home:
Band Aid - ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’
John Denver - ‘Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas)’
Justin Bieber - “Mistletoe”
Paul McCartney and Wings - “Wonderful Christmas Time”
Ariana Grande- “Santa Tell Me”
New Kids on the Block- “Funky, Funky Xmas”
Dan Fogelberg, “Same Old Lang Syne”
Madonna, “Santa Baby”
The Robertson - “Santa Looks A Lot Like Daddy”
Barry Gordon- “Nuttin' for Christmas”
Lou Monte- “Dominic the Donkey”
Wham- “Last Christmas”
FF5- “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer”
Bruce Springsteen- “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”
Bob Seger- “Little Drummer Boy”
Twisted Sister- “Silver Bells”
When somebody asks for your services on not-nearly-enough notice and has weirdly specific conditions to your participation in their event, what do you do??
This episode's special guest is Mike Schulte of The Pork Tornadoes! Filling in for an anniversary-vacationing Adam Johnson!
What it feels like when something is new--the small wins start piling in and the whole thing starts feeding on itself in a virtuous circle of success! A discussion of the operating states of a project, and what it feels like when the state is Momentum!
Ever had a time when suddenly all the attention was on you? Today's episode deals with two cover/tribute acts who suddenly found themselves in the limelight, and what each of them did about it.
We apologize for the presence of the phrase "The Pee Band" in this episode.
Among the topics we touched on this week: What it's like when you don't feel like you can trust your rig. (Hint: It's not great.) Plus, now is the time to spend your year's earnings with "tax purposes" as the excuse, so let 'er rip.
This week our first Patreon supporter Adam Runnels co-hosts the podcast and we discuss how to handle a gig where nothing goes right, and how much rehearsal is TOO much rehearsal.

A very zen episode from your boys. First, a story about changing leadership at venues, and how we have to not let that throw us. Then new songs for 2021! Then two contrasting gear stories, one with a happy ending, one less so.
A big old catch-up-fest for a couple podcast pals who haven't seen each other in a couple weeks. Then: Dan unveils the branding and thinking behind his new project, named The.... well listen and find out.
This week Adam interviews his drummer, Nathan Weaver, about how he got into the band, and something that COMPLETELY changed how he approaches gigs in the past year.

What documentation do you need to do this job professionally? What do you need to sit down at your computer and just create? This week we talk about the documentation, materials, and collateral that your band needs to represent itself well, protect its interests, and communicate with marketers, venues, and technicians!
This week we are pulling an episode previously only available on Patreon for you guys! Ben Ivey is a full-time audio engineer who has worked with Members Only as well as national touring acts all over the country. Scared to have a straightforward pricing conversation with your customers? Does the thought of designing price tiers give you nightmares? Do you shiver at the thought of losing business to cheaper competitors, or charging so little it's not worth your while?
Well this is the episode for you because we deal with pricing and then we deal with scary material for this season!
Shouted-out particulars you Must See:
Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo covered by A Thorn For Every Heart
Dream Warrors - Dokken
I Put A Spell On You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins
What is there to deal with while getting your sound right for a particular space? Is the group of humans there your audience already? How should you deal with them? These questions and more on this week's episode!
How to know when it's time to confront one of your people about their performance, their impact on your brand, or any other reason. If you're going to be the band leader, that means you have to be be the grown-up. Here's our thoughts on how to deal with that!
We all experience it--the inevitable negative review, Internet hater, or snarky jealous musician. How do you handle it? Go into a spiral? Brush off your shoulder? Take the feedback and improve? This episode with special guest Mike Schulte (who's gotten some Internet hate in his time) talk about what that feels like and what to do with it.
Also Disney, Halloween, and RIP Norm MacDonald.
We're putting our foot down. If you're a musician there are a few things you just have to stop doing. And in this episode we will tell you them.
Also Adam preps karaoke and Dan preps Disney. All around a preppy, prohibit-y episode.
No matter how you slice it, having a cover band means dealing with personnel. Tonight Adam and Dan discuss their current challenges, opportunities, and complexities of working with that Most Dangerous Game: Man. (And women. theoretically. But statistically: man.)
The boys are starting to get their feet back under them, gig-wise, and exploring these newfangled 10 year old things that the pandemic brought front and center: QR Codes. Adam's talked about them. Dan's experimented with them. Today's ep is a deep dive into how they can be used to get your content in front of audience members.
Also: A rubber duck, a weird crackle, a fishing child, and maybe they're not all ladies OR gentlemen.
We're a LITTLE unfocused in this episode, friends. We'll be the first to admit it. Adam covers the first outing of his new project, Dan talks about his guitar needing to get to the shop and how he's getting around since then, we discuss band names and branding, and various other short topics.
Tonight we're joined by Adam's fine co-frontperson (and co-spousal-unit) Amber! The topic of setlist flow and interstitial mid-show chat came up on Facebook, and she had Things to Say! So we brought 'er on to say them.
Minor topics include how to get through a show in the face of catastrophic equipment failure, doggy "day care", and whether silent rehearsals really are.
How do you become a stage-presence monster if your whole gigging life has been about focusing on quality playing? Is it even worth it? How can you make the trip from here to there? These are the questions Adam and Dan focus on this week.
Also PLEASE support Steve Witschel who remains hospitalized with Covid-19. He's meant a lot to all of us, and even though his immediate outlook is improving, it looks like it'll be a while before he's rocking Bourbon Street again. https://www.gofundme.com/f/Help-CBC-Founder-Musician-Steve-Fight-Covid
After a general gigging update (and a VERY mysterious tease about a VERY mysterious Zoom call), we get right down to it: There's a magic word. If you know it's magic, and LIVE like it's magic, it'll transform everything about your band and music career, relationships, career, and life in general. So listen up.
Welcome to Cover Band Confi-DAN-tial! Adam's at the beach, and Dan's just got a couple thoughts to drop.
First: Momentum. Getting the proverbial ball rolling, and then what to do with it once it is.
Second: From a listener question, should your marketing and market approach target venues? Should your social content and ad spend target restaurant owners and other kinds of bookers? (And is Dan actually going to answer THAT question, or use it to talk about something tangential?)
In this fine episode, Dan drops some thoughts about how to cancel a gig and leave everyone happy (by being a solution, not a problem). Then Adam shares how his cucumber-cool approach may have created an awesome new relationship and set of opportunities (by being a solution, not a problem). Short version of this episode: read the title.
This episode's outro bumper is brought to us by show patron Adam Moskowitz of the VAM Band in south Florida: https://www.facebook.com/theVAMband/. To be as cool as Adam, just go to http://patreon.com/coverbandconfidential and join us!
This week Adam shares what it was like when his band got together for the first time in a year and a half (spoilers: there's work to do). Then Dan talks about his strategy for building his email list, and the simple trick that's grown his list by 25% in the last two weeks. So should you!
The world is opening up, and it feels like the demand for live entertainment has never been higher! There are two new things to keep in mind: The effort to maintain and nurture and grow relationships and opportunities, and the desire to expand into this new environment wisely and steadily and with an eye on work/life balance.
Today we talk about both of those things, along with, of course, Velvet Elvis.
Listener Russ asks a keen question on band rehearsal schedules and almost certainly gets more answer than he was hoping for. All you need to know to have the basics of your rehearsal schedule work for your group.
This week's episode is an interview with Eric Hogan. Eric is a veteran of the cover band world currently portraying Kurt Cobain in Nevermind: An Atlanta-based tribute band for Nirvana. In our conversation we discuss how he came to starting the group, how his band has been able to transition from bars to large venues in a short period, and what it takes to embody a legend.

DON'T get trapped in a Chinese boy band reality show. DO take feedback well! That's what this episode is all about--how to get feedback, how to orient your emotions to take it properly, and what to do with it when you've got it.
A trio of topics to talk about today. First: Requests. How to handle them, how to solicit them, and maybe an online tool to do it in?
Second: Impressive vs Good. Does what you intend to deliver to an audience matter? (No. No it doesn't.)
Third: Listener question. Is this "you have to sell tables thing" a good deal?

As the light at the tunnel appears to edge closer, we take a good look at what a performer needs to be doing to hit the ground running. Are you going to pick up right where you left off? Leverage what you've built in the downtime to grow from? Or will you have to start from scratch?

First a Reddit thread prompts a conversation about the how, which, and mostly the WHY of finding forgotten but beloved songs from the past.
See the thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/lctvk8/what_is_the_best_forgotten_80s_song/
Then a couple name-collision items in the news prompts a conversation about trademarks, name uniqueness, and other important branding matters.
Gear... but NOT guitar gear! Prompted by a question on the Facebook group, the fellas discuss their use and abuse of Turbosound iNSPIRE range PA speakers.
Also: tendonitis! Deal with it!

The boys nerd out about upgrades patches, gear, and goodies. Which is an entertaining listen even if you're a keyboard player.
Then Adam recounts is experience with a recent gig playing through the "Cover Band Hell" set list and being paid handsomely for it. Who are we benefitting by being set list snobs? Maybe knock that off and play what the people want?
This week the lads discuss turning down gigs that don't work for you. For whatever reason--the travel, the money... And how we all need to be making healthy, self-sustaining choices, especially now.
But first a chat about what the new vaccine news might mean about coming back to the stage, and what Billboard and Ticketmaster get right and wrong in their approach to protecting their audiences.
Look. Tonight it's either watch votes gradually trickle in from some very very slow states, or talk about random nonsense with the boys. We're choosing the latter.
Drunkest audience member. Worst show. Famous people we've met. We're covering the IMPORTANT stuff in this one.
Speaking of important stuff, to make clear ice spheres, Dan can vouch for this: https://www.totalwine.com/accessories-more/accessories/bar-tools/tovolo-clear-sphere-ice-mold-s-4/p/176568920
In this fine episode, the two fine lads discuss--with no disrespect but some tough love--the recent Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing of Guitar Center. What do you think will fill the void? Are music stores obsolete?
Then we talk about the economics of being a Good Guy, and how Adam made nearly as much money not playing as he did playing.
And now if you'll excuse me, I need to go watch Cougar Town.
This week the fellas discuss a critical aspect of a professional's mindset for success: Locus of Control. Are you in charge of your life's out comes? Or does life determine? Which context you live in is decisive.
Adam opens with a story about going full "let me talk to your manager". Then a chat about Dan's rehearsal plans gets us going all over again about in-ears. Then Dan yaps about his pre-order for a fancy new piece of guitar gear.
This week the lads reminisce about when the first heard Eddie and the impact he had on them.
Then a real good actual meaty conversation about band business stuff! How bout that! Everything you need to know about what you need to have in place to maximize your odds when selling yourself to a booking agency.
Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown, and things seem hard or tough, along comes a CBC Distraction-Cast to put a bright shiny face on things!
This week the boys are joined by special guests Mike Schulte of The Pork Tornadoes and Amber Johnson of Members Only for a light hearted chat with only moments of grim seriousness. In this episode: What you watching? What you listening to? What you reading?
This is a particularly divisive and difficult moment of the world, and that's showing up in the musical community too. A couple recent events show people are ready to be nasty and difficult. So DON'T, people! Repeat after us: "Good for you; It's not for me."
You know, the people who support us and love us and come out for us no matter what. Even in times we can't go out, fans are everything. This week the lads discuss the art and science of meeting them, making them, creating them, and nurturing them.
Having been prompted to think about it by a fascinating YouTube video from Adam Neely (link below), the boys explore their thoughts about diversity, race, and music theory. How much does our own lived experience limit our song selection? How can we think more broadly to hit audiences of all types?
Please don't miss this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr3quGh7pJA&ab_channel=AdamNeely
The boyos catch up and debrief last week's interview, then discuss a conversation Dan has been having with new listener Dan McDermott, on the subject of: if you were going to start up a solo acoustic career from scratch, how would you do that? A question lots of us will probably be asking a few months from now, so it can't hurt to have a head start thinking about it!
This week's episode brought to you by Setlister.AI, apparently.
Please help us welcome our special guest Finn McKenty, marketing strategist, music commentator, writer and graphic designer who currently runs the YouTube channel The Punk Rock MBA and is director of marketing at the online education platform URM Academy.
During this "down" time, what can we do to stay present in the minds of our audiences? What new ideas can we come up with to engage with people, so when the time comes we're ready to come out the other end stronger? Finn brings us some great ideas and inspiration to think in new ways.
A general update from the gents--a quiet week for Adam, but prep for a Real Live Gig for Dan! News from the world of booking.
Then: A data breach exposes the band world to hacks. Keep yourself safe with https://haveibeenpwned.com.
This week finds ya boys bearing up mightily in this ongoing and endlessly weird time.
First: WELCOME new listeners! Then a great listener question about where to find song charts, and an update about all things Adam and Dan: A new software project, a potential new gig, and other items scratched from the depths of the content mines.
When better to reconsider your set list than when the gigs are all cancelled? During this time, Dan's created a tool to derive song inspiration from the charts, and Adam's super into it.
Our special guest this week is frontman for Yacht Rock Revue and the Please Rock agency. Hear what folks at the top of the cover band game are doing In These Uncertain Times!
It's looking less and less like how it used to be is going to be back any time soon. So maybe the move is to make the "what's next" thing happen sooner? Dan and Adam have Ideas about this, and has no problem sharing them.
Celebrate our hundredth episode with a couple VERY special guests! We're extremely proud to have Dave Hamilton and Paul Kent from the Gig Gab Podcast join us!
Updates on reopening (or is it?) from around the US, then a great conversation about leaving one musical situation, and finding another.
After a relative scarcity of topics, ya bois are back with some things to discuss. On the docket: Cancelling our own gigs, Reverb fees on the climb, Masks and other Merch.... AND MORE!
Adam's abandoned us for warmer climes, so Mike's back in the saddle for another go-round! This week: What it looks like to claw your way out of the emotional the pit, and the big WHY of why we do all this anyway.
Ya boys are back to talk about how the focus and limitation of our time drives us to think in new and creative ways. Dan discusses his plan for upcoming gigs for both his projects. Adam recaps a recent acoustic night and plans for Big Family Fun for the next couple weeks.
Things are opening back up, apparently! So what does that look like for us? What do we need to re-learn, what have we retained, and what opportunity is there to re-think? Including the current thoughts about refreshing the set list.
Is this normal that we're getting back to? Who knows! But something is happening, and we're here for it.
The boys recap their acoustic nights-out of the last few weeks, do the required chit-chat about how weird things are now, then mostly talk gear.
The world's a mess. So we do what we do when the world's a mess: Bring in Mike Schulte from The Pork Tornadoes to confront reality for a few minutes, and then to talk about everything BUT what's bringing us all down.
Among the topics for this sprawling distractioncast is: Dan's gig, Craft beer, Social (distancing) Media, Haircuts, and Back to the Future.
As the world begins to open up, we confront what that means for musicians. First off: everyone gets to have their own assessment of the risk and reward and decision-making around that. Here we explore ours.
In this week's episode we interview Jordan Olds aka Gwarsenio Hall. Jordan is a musician and comedian who hosts a youtube series called "Two Minutes to Late Night". In this interview we discuss Van Halen, how he approaches covering songs on his show, and Ice Cream Men.

What else are you going to do with no gigs to play? We talked about it. We had lofty ideas about it. Now it's time to actually get down to it. What actions are you going to take to make you, your band, and your brand stronger, tighter, faster, and better coming out of this mess?
This week, Adam's found time to record a tune with his friends, and Dan's found a Reddit post that bugged him. So let's talk about that!
Here we are on the ultimate gig hunt. Lock down has us all live streaming if anything. But some of us have governors who insist we're going back to normal. So.... What does "normal" even mean for musicians after all this?
The boys lay down another livestream-hybrid podcast, and MIGHT someday get okay at it. Don't mind the echo on Adam's mic in the first few seconds, we got to the bottom of that super quick.
NOW! What else are you going to talk about when your whole gigging life is on hold? GEAR, obviously! New mics, new mic stands, new Helix firmware, new preamps.... All super exciting things to own when you can't take them out of the house to use!
The guys return to form: none of that "this is the audio from a thing you really had to be there for" nonsense. In this episode we catch up on the happenings of two playas who can't play, and talk about some ways to handle the events of our current world--mentally, emotionally, and socially.
Podcast listenership globally is in the tank now that nobody's commuting or going to the gym. Our numbers are no exception. And you know what that means? A super low-effort episode from ya boys!
With the help of longtime listeners and friends Paul Schuh and Ben Ivey, we have a Zoom chat about stuff, and you can listen in. Enjoy it or something!
You saw it live, maybe. Now hear it not-live!
The times being what they are, more and more performers are turning to live-streaming to make ends meet. In this episode we disgorge what your humble hosts have learned about livestreaming AND in burst of irrepressible meta-ness, we do it WHILE livestreaming!
Any reference to things you can see, or any visual aspects of this presentation were entirely appropriate at the time, we promise.
Our guest this week, vocal coach Jamie Vendera, is probably most well known for shattering a wine glass using only his voice on an episode of Mythbusters. He has worked with bands like Dream Theater, I Prevail and Thriving Ivory. The author of books like “Raise Your Voice” and “Mind Over Music,” and the host of the “Sing Better Fast” Podcast.

Your boys take ten minutes to gripe, vent, and bitch about what's on everyone's mind right now. THEN we spend the rest of the episode engaging in delightful, plague-free chit chat with pod amigo Mike Schulte of The Pork Tornadoes! Is it all relevant band topics? Not on your life! Does it matter? Not in the slightest!

In this episode we get a peek into the Johnson household, a discussion about what it takes to feel out a new room, and a dramatic reading of the band gig scam-baiting of the century.
This episode is SO MUCH BROUGHT TO YOU by our compatriots at http://chauvetdj.com
Adam regales us with the story of a loose power plug, and Dan recounts his adventures with the plague.
Brought to you by our fine feathered friends at http://chauvetdj.com
On this (half) episode Adam and his band talk a bit about how they ended up in the band, their favorite things about playing with Members Only and general green room shenanigans.
The realities of Your Fine Hosts' schedules this week call for two microsodes instead of one episode! In Episode A for the week, Dan soliloquizes on the subject of leverage: how to use what you got to maximize what you get.
That's right it's the second week of February and you get two! two! two episodes in one week! First a recap of Adam's exciting gear week. Then a pair of Internet-inspired topics. Gig bidding sites: Sucky or super? Then, whose job IS it to market a gig?
This episode brought to you by the stage-lighting solution-providers at http://chauvetdj.com
[Bonus Episode] This episode Adam interviews Braxton O'Neal- Lead singer of El Scorcho. El Scorcho is a Weezer tribute band that's been around for over 15 years at this point. We talk about the band's birth, how to maintain a product that long in this market, and how to keep things interesting for your audience so they come back for more. Also, how you get the band you're paying tribute to to post about your gigs :)
More info on El Scorcho can be found at www.atltributebands.com
Everything you wanted to know about calling audibles--the strategy, approach, and considerations! Also: the risks of repetitive stress injury for musicians are real, y'all. Join Dan as he whinges about it.

A tidy little episode about business structures, incorporation, bank accounts, taxes, and other Big Important Professional Music Person Topics.
This ep lovingly sponsored by our fine friends at Chauvet DJ. Check das blinkenlights at http://chauvetdj.com
Another episode, another Adam rant--this time the insanity of thinking the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, like, OWES you something.
Then the meat: Set list design! Dan lays out his W theory of set lists, and we walk through a couple user-submitted ones.
This episode sponsored by our easily set-up and broken-down companions at Chauvet DJ. http://chauvetdj.com for all the deets.
The boys open the new year hot, with a classic CBC-style rant about online discourse, social media, and shutting the eff up about politics. Then we cool things down with a thorough how-to on Live Karaoke. If you've ever thought about adding audience participation elements to your show, you'll want to check this out!
This episode sponsored by our sparkly-fresh companions at http://chauvetdj.com.
What would the last CBC episode of 2019 be without a trip in to the dark, dark psyches of your illustrious hosts? We've managed to stay out of there in recent times, but... well here we go. First Adam deals with the fallout of a less-than-ideal night, then Dan considers his momentary lack of smoothness with inconsiderate karaokeists.
This episode illuminated by Chauvet DJ. Find out what they're all about at http://chauvetdj.com.
Our boys are back in the pocket for another good one. A heaping helping of meaty meatballs followed by a spirited chat on how to be maximally marketable as a gigging musician.
This episode sponsored by the glittering gods at http://chauvetdj.com
This episode: Marketing as storytelling, the power of scarcity, how to do Facebook right, and a three-generation-old egg nog recipe. Schedules couldn't align this week... but the stars could! Because Mike Schulte of The Pork Tornadoes was able to come guest-cohost with Dan while Adam was off dealing with, like, whatever, okay? Stuff, man. Geez.
This episode sponsored by our radiant amigos at http://chauvetdj.com
Our two Highly Prepared and Professional Podcasters embark on a taut, focused discussion and largely fail to get there. Some gear news (including first thoughts on the Fender American Acoustasonic Telecaster), some complaints about the Way Things Are, and some updates and promo ideas. Mostly just a darn good chat.
This episode brought to you courtesy of das blinkenlights at http://chauvetdj.com.
Know that guy from that other band who stands in the back of the room and folds his arms at you while you play? This week Adam and Dan discuss how not to be that guy. Let's all agree to be givers of energy rather than suckers, hmm?
Also Thanksgiving gratitudes and seasonal silliness.
This episode sponsored by our brilliant and shiny friends at http://chauvetdj.com
In answer to a question from listener Ryan O'Leary, the boys discuss how to breathe life back into a band when the thrill is gone. And Also: Big plans for our own projects, both separately and together, for 2020.
The show continues to be sponsored by our amigos at http://chauvetdj.com. Get lit with Chauvet DJ!
Plate of meatballs, this episode, but it all tends toward a couple things: Taking advantage of opportunities that present themselves, and creating opportunities where you can. And taking the time with the band, as the year comes to an end, to reflect and re-invent.
This episode sponsored by http://chauvetdj.com. Get lights!
This week's episode is brought to you by thinking ahead and bringing everything you're going to need for the gig to go smoothly. A sadly under-utilized skill by the boys this week!

Our special guest this week is co-lead singer for Members Only and official Adam Spouse, Amber Johnson!
We invited Amber to crash the all-dude podcast party to provide the female perspective on band life. What's it like being married to a band guy? And an interesting conversation about a performer's "vibe"--what is it, what would you call it, and how to develop it.
Events conspired in both our hosts' lives this week to suggest this fine topic: Managing the relationships with venues! When they go great, when they present challenges, and when it's time to move on. Also how not to put them on blast when they punch you in the face.
This episode is sponsored by Chauvet DJ. Don't rock in the dark! http://chauvetdj.com
Adam and Dan share the joy of New Project Energy! Discussion of what it takes to get a new band off the ground--logistics, marketing, sales, repertoire, personnel, and the all-important costume changes.
Then we respond to a listener question about how to rehearse. How long? How often? What's it like? The boys give their hard-earned opinions.
This week Adam interviews Ernie Ball endorsee and Fractal Audio Brand Ambassador Cooper Carter. We talk about his viral breakout with his cover of the "Star Wars" main score, his path to guitar, and the journey that is the creative process.

All the "meat" of this episode comes in small, self-contained chunks. "Meatballs", if you will.
Meatball #1: An update on the performance of Dan's free range merch.
Meatball #2: Answer to a listener question about the balance of technique drills and songwork when learning an instrument.
Meatball #3: Acoustic Duos. Dan's in a new one. What's up with that
Meatball #4: A quick-but-deep revisit of song selection and what's hot right now (NOT just recent stuff!).
Yet another Two-Guys, Two-Rants episode.
First Adam assiduously advises all on the value of value; providing it, sharing it, and being generous with it. Don't be socially stingy, CBCers!
Then Dan dives deep into the power and freedom that comes with the courage to say that magical word: No. What "no" enables, and what the freedom to say "no" allows you to say "yes" to.
This episode is sponsored by CHAUVET DJ. Rock in the spotlight! https://chauvetdj.com
Dan and Adam ride again! An update on the gigging life, and all the mundane business it takes to keep it all running. Then Dan rants about dealing with the perceived "fakeness" of branding communication.

Okay. Yes. The audio in this episode is, let's say, imperfect. Flawed, perhaps. Some might say unlistenable, but let's not worry about them. YES Adam is crackley. YES his track was sped up like a chipmunk, and in slowing him down we made Dan sound like Barry White. YES to all those things, a thousand times YES.
STILL. Lean into it. Lean INTO the weird. Lean INTO bad audio.
Lean IN, friends. Lean IN.
