This Week: The Courage to Live

This Week: “What Does it Mean to Be Perfect as God is Perfect?”

Feeling exhausted by the relentless pursuit of perfection? Struggling with low self-esteem because you never feel “good enough”? Find liberation and hope this week as we ask “What Does it Mean to Be Perfect as God is Perfect?”

Sermon Series: Real Questions

People have plenty of questions, but the church doesn’t always feel like a safe place to ask them. In Real Questions, we will engage with real faith questions submitted from our community. Some of the questions might seem irreverent and you might wonder if it’s okay to talk about. If we only answer safe questions, we aren’t actually safe for questions. There aren’t always easy answers, but there is always an opportunity to grow and find God in the midst of life’s questions.

Today’s Message: Seeing Beneath the Surface

Have you ever felt overlooked? People are prone to put labels on each other. Some are seen as smart, as cool, as flaky, or as loyal. The labels we use sometimes leave people overlooked. This Week: Does God Need My Belief?

Sometimes churches can give off the notion that your knowledge and beliefs are the most important part of your identity. We spend a lot of time worried about whether everyone believes the same thing and whether we can tolerate others who don’t. The opening of the Gospel of John, however, portrays God as accepting and persistent despite the unbelief of God’s creation. Undeterred by unbelief, God continues to love and invite people to trust and to fully live. In light of what we know about the beauty and limitations of our brains, this week we discuss finding acceptance in God regardless of your mental capabilities.

This Week: Is There Enough?

What do you do when you're worried about if there will be enough? Is there enough food on my table? Is there enough money in my account? Is there enough time to get my tasks done? There's a temptation to turn inward when we're worried if there's enough. This week, we read the story of a prophet and a widow struggling through a famine. The prophet's advice runs contrary to our inclination, and yet it might be the thing that transforms our lives for the better.

Journey with us for this 3 week series on being satisfied.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Jesus told his followers that it wasn’t enough to love those who are easy to love. He calls us to love our enemies – and that doesn’t come naturally. Love might seem like an ineffective pipedream that can’t survive the everyday onslaught of negativity and criticism. And yet, the bridge of true love creates new paths to a better world.

In a world always lusting for the next better thing, we’re taking time to reflect on what it means to be satisfied. There’s nothing wrong with longing for a better world – things should be better! Yet there is spiritual, physical, and mental benefits from learning how to be satisfied in the present moment as we work towards a world that looks more like God intended.

Have you ever wondered if it was the right time to have an important talk? Maybe it can wait until later. Or maybe the moment has passed you by. This week, we’re reading Paul’s advice for how to know when to speak.

Is it possible to be a loving person in our polarized cutthroat world? Every action, every word, and every social post is pulled into a brutal war of us versus them. It’s not simply politics that cause fights today; it’s our entertainment, our education, our workplaces, our churches, our family gatherings – basically everywhere.

Peer pressure isn’t just a thing for kids. We’re peer pressured to wear certain clothes or buy certain phones. We’re also peer pressured to exclude certain people. This week, the apostle Paul tells us about an awkward party he had with Peter – and how Paul dealt with the peer pressure.

This Week: Is it Safe to Love?

How can we love our neighbors if we close off our hearts? Some of us close our hearts because we’ve been hurt. Others close our hearts because we’ve run out of space. This week, we’re reading from 1 Peter, where Peter encourages you to love with a tender heart, even if it risks pain. Join us as we seek how to do that everyday.

This Week: When is Freedom Dangerous?

Everybody wants freedom, but sometimes that freedom causes harm. The relationship between freedoms and laws can be tricky to navigate – with everyone having their own opinion on where to draw the lines. Paul wrote to churches in Galatia who were struggling with this. His advice – and his warning – is critical to loving your neighbor in a divided world.

This week Pastor Dallas encourages you to stop complaining about injustice and do something about it.

When Is It Okay to be Annoyed? (Acts 16:16-24)

Chances are there are some things wrong with this world that frustrate you. You see it, even without looking for it. Some people are working multiple jobs and still struggling to earn enough to survive on. Others suffer from addictions but can’t get help unless they break the law. In Acts 16, Paul becomes annoyed for an unusual reason – a slave girl who is being used as a fortune teller keeps celebrating Paul and Silas’ message of salvation. Finally Paul decides to act, and we should too. Join us as we seek to bring God’s freedom to those around us.

Robbing Power (Acts 4:32-5:16)

On the other hand, that lingering question could be robbing an actually good thing of its power for you. The Gatekeepers (Acts 2:1-21)

We live in an age where a lot of the traditional gatekeepers have fallen. News channels and newspapers still exist; but news commentary also happens by influencers on Twitch and TikTok. Authors don’t have to find traditional publishers; they can publish directly to Amazon. Musicians don’t have to sign a major record deal; they can release music on Spotify or Soundcloud. Despite this new world, many of us still struggle to find our voice. This week, we celebrate Pentecost where God’s spirit powerfully moved unexpected people to speak out good news to the crowds gathered in Jerusalem. Let today be another Pentecost in Jackson.

Did you see what just happened? How does this look? You saw that too, right? Each of us have an important vantage point in the world. Our lives have different experiences, expectations, and imaginations. At the end of the Gospel of Luke, Luke finishes by turning the story over to the audience. You are called to be witnesses to what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen. In the conclusion to our “Write Your Own Headlines” sermon series, we talk through the blessing of sharing God’s story.

Sermon Series: Write Your Own Headlines

This Easter, we begin a series investigating the stories we notice and share. We're reading from Luke 24, paying attention to the news that the early church shared about Easter. The good news changed their world, and can change ours too.

Have you ever had a friendship that you didn’t appreciate enough until it was gone? This week, we’re reading about some of Jesus’ disciples who were sad because they missed Jesus. Jesus shows up to them in the story, but they didn’t realize it was him. When they finally realized Jesus was with them –POOF!— Jesus was gone. How the disciples responded to Jesus’s presence and disappearance can change how we live.

Have you ever been stuck telling negative stories about your life? Maybe the story doesn’t end as negatively as you’ve been telling it. Luke writes about some people traveling to Emmaus who encounter the risen Jesus. They are shocked that Jesus doesn’t already know why they’re sad. They tell Jesus all about the sad news of Jesus’ crucifixion. What they didn’t realize is that they were standing in front of good news, but they just couldn’t see it yet.

Many people get frustrated with the negativity of our news sources, but we often do the same thing. If someone kept track of the stories you share throughout the week, would the news be filled with positivity or would it focus on the negative things happening around you? Are your personal headlines filled with health crises, with fear of violence in the community, and economic gloom? Or are your personal headlines filled with stories of bravery, hope, and love?

This week, a community member asks: If God is so holy-making, why do I still struggle with the same things 20 years later?

We invite people to encounter God claiming that God will change them for the better. But why does that change seem to move so slowly, or at times feel like it’s not moving at all? This week we explore praying for transformation and feeling like nothing ever changes.

Responding to real questions, Pastor Dallas’s sermon series, "Real Questions," engages with real faith questions. Some of the questions might seem irreverent and you might wonder if it’s okay to talk about. If we only answer safe questions, we aren’t actually safe for questions. There aren’t always easy answers, but there is always an opportunity to grow and find God in the midst of life’s questions.

This week, a community member asks: Why is religion so often used for violence?

From Crusades to Cold Wars, religion has been invoked to inspire violence. For Christians, there are plenty of biblical stories with violence. There are stories of conquests, of plagues, of apocalyptic battles, of crucifixion. How should we read and interpret stories of violence in the Bible? What is God’s relationship to violence? Our answers make a difference in the pursuit of peace in the world.

Responding to real questions, Pastor Dallas’s sermon series, "Real Questions," engages with real faith questions. Some of the questions might seem irreverent and you might wonder if it’s okay to talk about. If we only answer safe questions, we aren’t actually safe for questions. Christians often look and sound a certain way. You know it when you see it. Sometimes they carry around big study Bibles filled with scribbles and highlighting, wear shiny cross jewelry, or eat at a Friday night fish fry. But what does it look like to follow Christ? This week’s question is: Are we really not supposed to judge people? In reality, we judge non-stop, like our “radar” is always on. Society ranks people by jobs, income, or status. Schools judge us and workplaces judge us. In our personal lives, we judge to see if we have anything in common with another. We judge to see if they are friend or foe. So, are we really not supposed to judge people?

Jesus was known as a great teacher, but that doesn’t mean Jesus was always lecturing. Jesus was frequently asking questions. This week, we look at how to have spiritual conversations by being a safe place for questions. Not sure what to say; try asking questions.

You’ve done and said some embarrassing things in your life. We all have. Our response to embarrassment is often to hide and be ashamed. Embarrassment, however, can also be an opportunity for positive change. This week we read about Jesus’ awkward conversation with a Samaritan woman at the well, and how being the talk of the town isn’t always a bad thing.

The Bible is a grand story of exile and reunion. If you’ve experienced loss and broken relationships, reunion might not seem possible. Our Easter hope is that humanity will be reunited fully with God and each other. This week, we read from Revelation about the Christian hope for the restoration of all things.

The season of Easter is a season of restoration. Jesus was restored to life and vindicated against his accusers. In Easter’s resurrection, we are restored too. The hopeless are restored to purpose. The scattered are restored to a community. The injured are restored to health.

Life wasn’t easy in 2020. After a year of global trauma, you are not alone in seeking a new moment of peace, hope, and joy. Join us in the season of Easter as we read from the stories of Jesus’ followers who are restored and given purpose for the journey ahead. May we all find the courage to spread the good news to those around us.

Jesus was raised, what's left to say? Sometimes we visualize Jesus' resurrection as the victory celebration and that all the work was finished. In some ways that's true, but it's not the whole story. God's restoration work continues. There is much that is unfinished that needs healing. Jesus is leading the greatest comeback of all time, a return to our divine purpose, rest, and life.

Christians throughout history have longed to follow Jesus more faithfully and not settle for a popular, cultural Christianity. This Lenten season, our sermon series, “In God’s Name,” examines the ways we describe God and God’s actions in the world. By Good Friday, Jesus will be charged with blasphemy for announcing and living out God’s liberation for the world. As we faithfully follow God, we should not be surprised that others, particularly other Christians, might consider our devotion to be blasphemy too. God’s transformative power creates a world that is more beautiful, loving, and good. Despite this, we often respond poorly to God’s transforming presence. This week’s sermon text is filled with the unusual. Jesus is accused of illicit magic. The ruler of demons is identified as Beelzebul. Jesus acknowledges the work of Pharisaic exorcists. And that’s just the backdrop for our continued conversation about the use of God’s name. While the usual Gospel tension is with Jesus being wrongfully accused of blasphemy, this week, we explore Jesus accusing his religious opponents of blasphemy. How do we identify powers that change the world as either God’s liberating power or the destructive powers of chaos? Explore with us!

Blasphemy isn’t just a kind of profanity. We’re accustomed to people cursing God’s name, but this week we reflect on the times we blaspheme God in times of blessing. We’re often afraid to try and restore broken relationships with our coworkers, neighbors, friends, and family. When we avoid our broken relationships, we also avoid glimpses at the divine embrace, where God brings healing and hope. This week, we read about the moment Esau and Jacob meet each other 20 years after their relationship was broken by deception. Join us as we listen for how God calls us to the transformative work of reconciliation.

In the series, “Sibling Rivalry,” we are studying the stories of Esau and Jacob to understand both the challenges and hope for dysfunctional relationships. In so doing, we hope to highlight what real reconciliation looks like, not a cheap artificial unity that makes reconciliation sound easy, but a reconciliation that is a part of the transformative journey with God.

In so doing, we hope to highlight what real reconciliation looks like, not a cheap artificial unity that makes reconciliation sound easy, but a reconciliation that is a part of the transformative journey with God.

There are pivotal moments that shape a relationship for better or worse. In Genesis 27, Jacob’s deception fractured his relationship with his brother and changed the the next two decades of their lives. Join us as we contemplate the urgency of faithful living and the gravity of unfaithfulness. This week’s message is titled, “The Point of No Return,” and is the second message of our series, “Sibling Rivalry.”

Today's sermon is the start of a new sermon series, “Sibling Rivalry.” In a world of broken and dysfunctional relationships, we look to Esau and Jacob for understanding how problems emerge and for what seeing God in the midst reconciliation can look like.

In the series, we will examine the real challenges of relationships, not the cheap artificial unity talk that makes reconciliation sound easy. While reconciliation is difficult, it is a part of the transformative journey with God.

This week’s message, “We’ve Got History,” starts with the history and systems that we are born into that cause conflict and a study of Genesis 25:19-34. Join us as we begin to study the stories of Esau and Jacob.

January 10 is the first Sunday after Epiphany, where we celebrate the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry with his baptism. John the Baptist preached uncomfortable truths about the injustices of his time and called for repentance. As we recover from the trauma that occurred at the U.S. Capitol building this week, we are invited to look at the uncomfortable truths about ourselves and examine where repentance is needed. The scripture text for today's message is Psalm 29.

Christmas isn’t over. Christmas is actually a church season, not just a single day. This Sunday we read from John 1:10-14 about how we too often respond negatively to God’s light in the world. As the Christmas season nears an end, let us choose to cultivate a habit of saying yes to God’s surprising work in our life.

When things are difficult, there is a temptation to abandon ship. In a year of isolation, we look to Christmas for the reminder of God’s presence in our midst. Even more, God calls on us to be faithful to God and to each other, companions on our shared spiritual journey. This week, we learn from the Gospel of Matthew about faithfulness as we read about how Joseph chose to remain faithful in the face of unexpected news.

This is our fourth week in our series, An Unexpected Christmas. Advent is a season of anticipation for the light that emerges in the darkness. We anticipate hope in the midst of despair. We anticipate faith in the mist of wandering. We anticipate love in the midst of hate. While we anticipate God’s transformative work, we acknowledge that God’s ways are often difficult to predict even when we’re anticipating them. As we read the biblical story of the events leading up to the birth of Jesus, we read of people’s responses to God’s unexpected ways. This Advent, facing a year full of dashed expectations, let us continue the tradition of hopeful anticipation.

We too often read the Bible in a monotone manner, missing the dynamics of the story. We miss the painful low moments of grief. We miss the jubilant shouts of praise. This week, we are learning from the poetic and musical responses to the original Christmas story. People respond differently to Christmas, both in the past and today. What is it to embrace the unexpected movement of God with language that elevates into music?
