Anne's bio:

In 2016 Anne Gannon founded The Largo Group, a firm specializing in over-delivering for entrepreneurs and business owners. Anne believes unprecedented growth is due to believing in providing a team of experts to their clients at an affordable and flat-fee rate so that their clients have the peace of mind of knowing the Largo Group is only a phone call away. In the early days of the pandemic, Anne pivoted The Largo Group to provide hands on support for the hospitality industry that was in a free fall. Anne and her team provide free offerings to major corporations as well as individuals, which included weekly check-in sessions to provide updates on everything from cash flow to government assistance. Anne has remained committed to providing free education and assistance for many business owners as their business is their largest financial asset. In 2004 Anne became a pro golfer but quickly realized listening to CNBC and reading the Wall Street Journal that her true love was economics and business. As the daughter of a life-long entrepreneur, Anne knew her dream was to make a difference in the accounting world. Not the golf course.

Dr. Nicole Garner Scott is a highly sought-after serial entrepreneur, financial expert, and advisor. She's also my first ever returning guest.

Formerly a guest on episode 41, titled, Money, Wealth, and Entrepreneurship, Nicole uses her story and experiences to empower others with tools to change their financial trajectories.

With over a decade of experience in entrepreneurship, she believes there is more opportunity to serve by helping reduce losses through structuring a well designed plan.

She is an Atlanta native born and raised in College Park just like my siblings, a mother and a wife.

As a financial professional, she’s on a mission to help mothers set up and enforce money boundaries; unwind familial money baggage, and become the compassionate CFOs of their families.

Nicole’s mission is to help create financial breathing room for households of underrepresented communities and realistic wealth plans to fit any budget while focusing on legacy building and generational wealth. Nicole lends her expertise as a consultant, helping both established companies and startups build meaningful connections with wealth positivity.

Nicole received her undergraduate degree from Georgia State University, her MBA in Digital Entrepreneurship from Strayer, and was awarded an honorary doctorate recognized for her work in business. By connecting pieces of her client’s financial puzzle and determining if they are working together in a coordinated strategy, she helps create their ideal financial picture and map out their legacy.

Quote: "Wealthiness gives you peace of mind. It gives you options, and it gives you the ability to live later on without running out of money."

QUOTABLES:

“If you don't have peace in your heart if you don't have peace in your life, everything else is going to be chaotic.”

“So with the classes that I've been offering, the workshops that I've been offering, in a more intimate setting, the products simply support that work as I educate people more about how powerful they are, what their energy is, how to control your energy, how to manage your energy, how to clear your energy, how to establish an energy.”

“I bless him release all things seen and unseen, known and unknown, that block delay, hinder or deny my highest good.”

“I'm calling forth my highest and my greatest good, I'm attracting all things that are good for me.” “I'm moving toward an experience and expression of peace.”

“Motivation is highly overrated, and it only lasts about six weeks. You'll get motivated and start something to do something. And then by week five, you're petering out.”

“We don't want motivation, what we want is inspiration. That means it's aligned with your core and authentic identity. That means it serves a grander purpose.”

“Purpose is a passion it's not a job. And when you are inspired or inspired or when you have inspiration, you have another level of passion that comes from your belly.”

Song Mentioned: A Million Lives by Jake MIller

In this solo episode I talk about:

  • Rebranding podcast to the same name as my book
  • The many things I've learned that I would do different and want to do again
  • The purpose of the summit: to empower other women to level up in their personal and their professional life and encourage women to see life differently, see life more positively
  • A pivot as to what I do for other service-based entrepreneur that don't necessarily need a photo shoot or don't necessarily need a full blown marketing strategy plan.
  • Having a virtual summit is no easy feat
  • Being well-branded all things purple making it welcoming
  • Summit topics: mindset, boundaries, entrepreneurship, podcasting storytelling, entrepreneurship and conflict management,
  • The power of online community
  • Writing out goals for this summit
  • Set goals and even if you don't meet them, so many other opportunities come
    • What I gained:
Emails subs, gained followers, more YouTube subscribers
  • Planned my meals ahead of time to nourish me and stay hydrated
  • The goal is to help other women to tell their stories confidently, master their marketing, and go to their events by managing a business, starting a business, starting a podcast, growing that podcast
  • Never stop owning your story
  • Never stop showing up online because you never know what people will see in you

This episode is all about celebrating. This episode is not to boast, not to brag. It's only to inspire you to step out of your comfort zone and to fulfill your purpose. Grow your brand online.

I did an end of year reflection in 2019. Now I reflect on 2020. This was recorded the day after my birthday. Every year around my birthday my mom encourages me to celebrate my birthday so every year there's always a huge sense of gratitude that I made it another year. I've always grown up celebrating my birthday all month long. So I spent my birthday, surrounded by a handful of loved ones, but a lot of virtual lovers.

I return from my hiatus explaining about my divorce which came as a shocker to many. My family friend said that it was two people trying to make it work and just couldn't, you know, we had different Love Languages of way to show each other love and we just couldn't. It was different because it was like a bandaid on a scab, quickly pulling off a band-aid applied out within the pain slowly but surely going away. So even though it was amicable, and even though I technically walked away with nothing but lessons and memories, both good and bad, and my electronics and appliances, every divorce is different because neither one of us wanted it to be an ugly fight because we've seen it happen over and over in our lives. Yeah, it's possible, especially if you don't have kids and you don't have a house, that's how we're able to be smooth. Most people have difficult divorces, depending on the state they live in, depending on how many kids as well as depending on how many assets they had together. So we had none of that. So we were able to waive alimony, we've not gone to court with serving each other, so I'm glad that I didn't have a child through it because it would make things so much more difficult. And I'm grateful that I didn't really legally change my name everywhere. So there are a few things I got to change, remove, you know, like insurances, but it's not as much.

I'm so excited to talk to Rev. Michelle Dowell-Vest. She is a metaphysical minister, a family constellation facilitator and a clinical hypnotist, so she guides emotionally conscious daughters connected from their mother wounds to the issues in their life, whether it's a relationship, career, fertility, infertility, and other health issues. She has a lot of questions about stuff that we may not want to talk about. We're going to talk about trauma and how she really got started as a hypnotist as well as breaking down what it is that she does.
Some of those questions asked include but are not limited to:

  1. What is your birth story?
  2. Is there birth trauma?
  3. Does your mother wound manifest as perfectionism?
  4. What did you learn about co-parenting?
  5. Two words to describe mom
  6. Two words describe your relationship
  7. What is your biggest fear?
  8. What message did you receive about becoming pregnant?

High achieving, highly successful people often suffer from imposter syndrome. It doesn’t equate with low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence. ‘Imposters’ suffer from chronic self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence that override any feelings of success or external proof of competence. Some researchers have linked it with perfectionism, especially in women. We tend to not internalize our accomplishments, however successful we are in our field.

At one point, imposter syndrome kicked in so strongly that I had to remove my social media apps from my phone. That curated Instagram life really can be falsified and I was sucked into it. I deleted all the pictures from my phone of the times I happily ate out at nice restaurants. I share other tips that help me to beat imposter syndrome. I had to remind myself what it felt like to struggle and get back down to basics. It got to a point where I was tired of trying to prove my strength. I had to allow my vulnerable side to kick in, in order to move forward. I had to tell myself over and over, sometimes life happens and things happen beyond our control. I actually have that quote on my 2018 vision board. I began heavily depending on celebrating the small wins by writing them where I could easily refer to them, utilizing a vision board, and believing in the power of prayer and manifestation.

I challenge you to accomplish 20 S.M.A.R.T Goals in 2020.

[Announcement] I’m releasing a book, it’s available for preorder on Kindle. Seeing Life through a Different Lens, as told by my mother and myself, is a memoir. I am a deaf-blind childhood cancer survivor who sees in one eye and wears hearing aids in both ears. Be prepared to be inspired as you go through every emotion reading stories shared about overcoming adversity with resilience while fulfilling my love of music, travel, and photography. For two years, my mom started a blog on my life and successfully ran it for two years. Now we are repurposing the content into a book! In this book, we share experiences on what we learned from living with nonhereditary bilateral retinoblastoma. This book helps you to gain a better understanding of this rare childhood eye cancer. It also shines a light on a loving and supportive community. If you would rather wait to preorder the physical copy, that link will be available on Small Business Saturday (November 30). Thank you for supporting your independent, self-published author!

In this episode, my special guest, Whitney and I, talk about friendship.

I have a conversation with first and best friend at my second high school, McFatter technical high school.

We bonded as Key Club president and vice president and having technical classes right across from each other

We're talking about how we met and how Key Club, a high school service club, shaped both of our lives. We also talk about the moments we knew we would be in each other’s lives forever. She currently works at the YMCA in Broward County, Florida. She is very involved in the community. But she's also involved in the minority community as well, which I believe is very important. She is a South Florida native like me. We just love to travel together. The first trip that we took together was to Jamaica and she recently flew up to support me at my speaking gig in Memphis, Tennessee.

In this season-ending episode, I share five things I have learned about marriage. I also share how we met, our engagement story, and our wedding details. My 5-year anniversary is July 16, 2019. Over the course of the years, there have been a lot of ups, downs, lessons, and changes. One of the biggest things I learned is not to lose yourself. Our most difficult year, was because I wasn’t prioritizing myself. How can I adequately prioritize the marriage if I am prioritizing my husband? I was featured in a podcast and realized that I said a quote that resembles that in order to keep the fire burning, I need enough wood/food to burn it.

Here are my five tips and things I have learned:

  • Don’t lose yourself
  • Have patience
  • Communication
  • Respect
  • There are seasons in a marriage just like there are seasons in your life

For better or worse is what they say; not many people fully think about the worse part.

Growing up in an environment where either no one married or no one stayed married, it is hard. There are truly three people in your marriage.

I’m grateful to have in-laws who are not trying to be that fourth person.

Yes, sometimes I consult my new brothers and sisters during tough times.

But I learned that even they don’t know fully know my husband and vice versa. Patience is hard especially with two people that are both of the fire sign (Astrology).

The hard part is when your patience is being tested by someone who knows your buttons and weaknesses and sometimes intentionally pushes them. Your love languages are completely different and your love lifestyles are different.

Communication can be a challenge at times. When both spouses have been used to being alone, doing things alone and fending for themselves for so long, sometimes it feels like there’s no need to communicate, other times we don’t even think about communicating things which happen to be of importance to one another. Language barriers sometimes get in the way too, arguments may come up when all in all, we are both saying the same exact thing. While both people are used to being private, the right kind of talks can cause one or the other to get unnecessarily defensive. It’s all about having the right amount of understanding.

R-e-s-p-e-c-t. Everyone has a different definition of what it means. The key thing about respect is letting the person be who they are. They didn’t come into the marriage to be changed. Obviously, as time goes on, they will grow in their own time. Allow the things that make you different mesh together to eventually help you to be aligned.

We’ve traveled to a handful of places in the U.S. together. We’ve been to Florida together for my doctor appointments in Fort Lauderdale as well as Tampa Florida for my best friend’s wedding.

We are finally done with the immigration process after basically 5 years.

What'd I Miss? Are you married? Do You Have Tips? Leave a comment in an Apple Podcast review.

Jummy is a Nigerian American Descent and a London transplant and she is a huge music lover like me. We met in the She Podcasts Facebook Group.

Jummy Olawale is a licensed professional clinical counselor, motivational speaker, life coach, and podcaster. She has own private practice called Focus Counseling in Grandview Heights, Ohio where she works with clients struggling with relationship, marital, and mental health issues and helps them to find meaning, minimize their symptoms and improve their relationships with her international and multicultural life experience and education. She used to be a caseworker but that was not fulfilling enough for her. So Jummy went back to school to earn her Masters of Arts (MA.) degree in Counseling Ministries.

Jummy was born in Nigeria, Western Africa where she lived and attended elementary and secondary school. She migrated to London, England where she completed her High school and college education. After getting married, she migrated to the U.S. where she now lives with her husband and their two children.

She is also a life coach. I’m drawn to life coaches I don’t know why. Maybe because we both were that type of people that others were drawn to, in order to tell their advice to. To the point where I thought I wanted to be a therapist or psychologist but that was just too much schooling for me.

In this episode, we talk about our love for music, our love for West Africa, our love for love, the ups and downs of the immigration journey, why she started her own practice, and why she loves what she does. Here, she speaks from personal experiences.
She talks about:

  • Her immigration experience
  • She shares the experienced that encouraged her to leave no new person at a job behind
  • Why she encourages people to travel to other countries as a local
  • She shares her favorite songs
  • She shares where she has traveled to

A friend once said are you ever not working?

When you love what you do you never consider it work

In the very first episode, I share the story of How a Camera Saved My Life

This is a follow up where I share the entire story of how I got started and where I am now.

My first camera was a Kodak Polaroid Camera

Then the convenient store digital film cameras

In Middle School, I was gifted with a digital camera which I took with me on my first out of the country trip to Costa Rica.

The DSLR (Digitial Single Lens Reflex) cameras I own and use are the Nikon D3000 and D7000 (Video Capabilities)

I Really started using it during my first trip to my first African country of Ghana (Which I also talked about in a previous episode)

Unbeknownst to me, I started capturing the last professional images of friends/family/clients

Family Portrait - Son of Audiologist Marine

Family friend Almaz - I took the most and the last professional photographs of her

Began photographing my friend who grew up in a musical family

My first big media break thanks to my aunt who was a freelance makeup artist

My name meaning is illuminous (illuminating, shining bright)

That’s what I bring to the Music Industry and any of my Candid Style of Portraits

My classmates have said my travel work resembles Steve McCurry and makes them feel like they were in the country I traveled to.

I studied the work of Jeremy Cowart who I mentioned in a previous episode as he founded Help-Portrait.

Back when Amazon was a book reseller my mom bought me photo books

I ordered books from photographers who looked like me or whose style I admired such as Matthew Jordan Smith and photographers like Mark Liddell, Mario Testino

Brian Smith - whom I had the pleasure of meeting and receiving an autograph from.

I even got to meet the official photographer of the Grand Ole Opry, Chris Hollo and got his Autograph as well.

Studied Commercial Photography in High School - wanted to take the journalism program, but instead got placed in the Architecture program. There are no regrets because I know how to read floor plans and how I want to build my future house.

Then studied Professional Photography post-high school.

Only a handful of my classmates still actively pursue photography because, like entrepreneurship, it is not easy.

What a full Circle it is because a camera saved my life due to an image my mother took to help detect cancer, and now I plan to give back by teaching children.

I saw a need and a void that I could fill.

I had others who wanted to be my assistant just so they could learn.

Shannon Spencer Shareef is a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) who helps small businesses and individuals to minimize liability and maximize profitability. She is a mom to two beautiful and intelligent girls. She has been married since 2006 says and her husband is her biggest fan.

She considers herself a philanthropist and together they created the E.D.G.E. (excellence, diversity, growth, and education) Foundation to allow for schools to have the opportunity to have STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

In this episode, we talk about the importance of taxes and networking.

She created Access Financial Management LLC 10 years ago to provide a quality service for a good price, and still give them the tax, accounting, and advisory services that they needed for a decent price.

She learned even 15 years ago as she passed her CPA exam that there are a lot of people who are employed, but also entrepreneurs on the side.

We also talk about how we met in 1k1day and Yacht Club which is an exclusive community of tribe members who are business owners - basically the paid alumni network of the online course $1k1day by our mentor, Nicole Walters. We call her a mentor because she is more than just our teacher.

She talks about the benefit of having a supportive mother and sister as well as how the new tax laws affect individuals and businesses.

If you subscribe to my email list, I started something called Five Bullet Fridays ranging from weekly to monthly tidbits where I share what I’m doing, learning, reading or watching.

I got the idea from Tim Ferris because after all, we have to invest in ourselves sometimes.

Takeaways:

  • “The most important thing that I can say is to feel confident enough to keep pitching. It's amazing if you've got the ability to get to a literary agent, pitch to them, and speak to them.”
  • “90% of writing a novel is not that spark of creativity”
  • “The niqab, which is what I'm wearing at the moment is something that is not required for Muslim women. So for me, it's that certain people choose to earn good deeds by giving extra charity or by, you know, doing extra physical worship, and I choose to do this.”
  • “Just find a set of people who are doing the same sort of thing that you are perhaps in the same genre”
  • “Ramadan is almost an escape from the rest of the year, it's so much more peaceful.”

Growing up an only child, my mom taught me the importance of being charitable and how to share. The older I got, the easier it became to give. I share my experience with Key Club, Kiwanis, Help-Portrait, and Operation Crossroads Africa.

I’ll talk more about this in another episode but combined with my love language, disc profile (inspiring and supportive) enneagram (Type 2 the helper) and personality type is ISFP-T, it is a given that service is inevitably a part of my life. I’m that big-hearted empath that wears my heart on my sleeve. My Love language is any one of the five on a given day but my biggest is quality time.

As a Muslim, Charity is one of the five pillars of our religion of Islam. I talk more about that in a previous episode (Episode 05 Islam A Way of Life).

Charity becomes more prominent during the holy month of Ramadan. It is more so common for women, especially if they are on their menstrual cycle or pregnant because if you are unable to fast or sustain from eating and drinking from sun up to sun down, then you should be charitable. That can be monetary, or a matter of giving your time and serving or making food for those who are fasting or less fortunate.

Also because of my history of PCOS Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which I talked about in a previous episode (Episode 02 PCOS Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), I end up doing more charity than fasting. It’s like taking a breath for me.

My first real paid job was as a summer camp counselor to deaf-blind in middle school. No I was not 16 yet, but it was a part of vocational and orientation/life skills. They paid us bi-weekly.

It was such an exciting job because I was able to be of service. I was able to be a listener. I wanted to be a psychologist.

At my first high school, I became a member of Key Club, high school portion of Kiwanis International, during my freshman year. Even though I ran for secretary and did not win the election, my club advisor asked me to be the Class President. I was the president of all the Sophomores. I started a Key Club chapter at my second high school in Fort Lauderdale. Key Club has nothing to do with the making of door keys, but I do believe that service is the key to life as well as kindness.

As a young adult, I became a member of Kiwanis, the Young Adult Club in Washington D.C. where I led a chapter version of the fundraising program called Eliminate (maternal and neonatal tetanus; a bacterial disease can affect joints in third world countries).

The year I graduated high school, I was looking up ways to be of service with my photography skills. I learned about Help-Portrait and photographer Jeremy Cowart, who is based in the Nashville area. He founded it in 2008. It’s an annual event. Photographers, volunteers, makeup artists come together to take a professional picture for free. It’s an exhilarating experience.

I became one of those who would always give the homeless or less fortunate money whenever I could. My favorite and most exciting service projects are the ones where I can interact with people. There was a period where I would question their motive, but then it took me some growing to realize that my intentions are pure and it’s between them and God what they do with the money.

My next real job (A monthly paycheck) was Operation Crossroads Africa. I also talked about them in a previous episode.

(Episode 03 Operation Crossroads Africa) I wore many hats: Photographer for orientation, communications associate for DMV Alumni Association, videographer for their promo videos, social media marketer (Created their Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest), email manager, productivity consultant, advisor, gala steering committee member, and volunteer. That opened a lot of doors for me. They were my first real client. I’m grateful for the opportunities. I look forward to being a group leader either to my husband’s country of The Gambia or to a new country as a part of my goal to visit 30 African countries by age 30. Crossroads Meant so Much to me as a paid job. My love for Africa grew working with Crossroads.

I will give my old clothing items and electronics to Goodwill, Salvation Army or companies like those before I sell it. If it’s not in horrible condition, I will give to someone who I know will be more grateful for it. That mentality stayed with me when it came to recycling.

My favorite quote by Muhammad Ali:

“Service is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.”

Takeaways:

  • Love Always is the Answer
  • Love Always Wins
  • Be Charitable
  • Be selfless
  • You can never truly make it entirely on your own.
  • It does not have to be lonely climbing the ladder to success

My first few jobs involved interacting with people/being of service. One of the 9 Guiding rules of my part-time job is service. No matter what I do where this life takes me, I try to always incorporate service with all of my jobs as a photographer, brand cultivating strategist and as a woman.

Driving is in my blood - my dad was a taxi driver before becoming a CDL Driver.

He also did a little driving in the military during the Vietnam War in the Air Force.

Played lots of driving video games growing up such as Crazy Taxi.

I was surrounded by cars, new cars, old cars, rental cars.

Been driving since a child but with a permit since age 15, passed the test by age 16.

Living with one eye did not slow me down, more alert than most, I was ahead of the class because I had been driving for so long.

Blindspot/side view mirrors as a requirement on license

Glasses as a requirement when driving

Fast driving runs in my family

I’ve never gotten a major speeding ticket nor had an accident.

Have had my car since high school.

I have my dad’s driving genes.

A way to use my car - racking up no miles in D.C. due to taking public transportation and walking the streets like a local

By the time I was old enough to rent a car, Which was age 18 thanks to USAA

I must have been so used to having blind spots that I knew where to look. My mother joked that I had the driving genes of my father.

It came up more than once however the time it really clicked was when my friend from high school Came to visit me in Tennessee from Florida.

It was her first time in Tennessee ever and it was my pleasure to show her around the tourist spots.

She enjoyed it so much that she asked me out of the blue have you ever thought of becoming an Uber driver?

Fast forward a couple of years later, as I was in between jobs I applied for Uber and Lyft

I would do social media work, and then go out and drive

In this first episode of the Living Legacy Podcast Series, I begin by sharing the story where it all began: my cancer story.

  • Ciara, Chris Brown
  • Cases of Retinoblastoma
  • Survival Rates of Retinoblastoma
  • Kodak Polaroid Camera
  • Nikon
