Mia Morris has been dancing for just about as long as they can remember, exploring how every body can move to a beat or use movement to explore the world around oneself… or even within oneself. Joining an incredibly open and supportive dance company at a young age empowered Mia when it came to engaging with this expressive art form, and dance revealed itself as an essential part of who they are. Unfortunately, as many others have also experienced, Mia later discovered that other dancers or dance companies did not feel the same way. This revelation did not discourage Mia at all; in fact, it only encouraged them to find more ways to engage others in dance and exploring new ways to spread the message that dance is for ALL people, ALL bodies, ALL the time.

Mia Morris has inspired countless other people in seeing dance as they see it, as a form of expression that is for anyone to enjoy at any time, even if they don’t have what society may deem as the perfect body.

This week, the team delves into the important topic of medical advocacy and medical gaslighting with health coach and host of the Uninvisible Podcast, Lauren Freedman . As someone who has experienced chronic illness herself, Freedman is passionate about empowering others to take control of their own healthcare journeys.

Throughout the episode, Freedman shares her own experiences with medical gaslighting - a term used to describe when a patient's symptoms are dismissed or downplayed by medical professionals. She discusses the frustration and isolation that can come from feeling like no one is taking your health concerns seriously, and offers advice on how to advocate for yourself in these situations.

Freedman speaks with a number of guests on her own podcast who share their experiences with medical gaslighting, including one woman who was told by doctors that her chronic pain was "all in her head" for years before finally being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease.

The episode also touches on the importance of medical advocacy - the idea that patients should be active participants in their own healthcare journeys, rather than simply relying on doctors to make decisions for them. Freedman emphasizes the importance of doing your own research, asking questions, and advocating for yourself in order to ensure that you receive the best possible care.

Overall, this episode is a must-listen for anyone who has ever felt dismissed or ignored by medical professionals. Freedman's personal experiences and the stories of her guests offer valuable insights into the challenges of navigating the healthcare system, as well as practical advice on how to be your own best advocate.

We had the best time chatting with Lauren and feel more confident preparing for medical appointments, speaking confidently with our doctors and cutting ties with medical professionals who aren't listening or meeting our needs.

A shocking 87% of students felt that their high school was not helping them to develop the skills to earn their college degree or to get a job. And a recent study showed that 63% of what students learn in their education is not used in the average American’s daily life. That's where these amazing students found a way to create change!

Tamara Villanovoa, the founder of Regina Educa, was inspired by her time growing up in Chile to learn to be more communicative than the culture often allows. She uses her creativity to offer caregivers and educators resources to teach young people about their anatomy so that they might see beauty in their bodies and find empowerment in fully understanding themselves. She uses her artist background to create puppets of sexual organs, which she uses, and has found great success, in her education. She’s a true believer in laughing at yourself and learning in a fun, honest way. As she says: the topic of sex is too serious to take too seriously.

The HIP team explains that the best time to talk about sex, love and biology, is any time!

Dr. Lanae St. John Loves talking about sex! After living in Germany and experiencing a cultural shift in thinking about sex and sexuality, Lanae made it her life’s work to help others understand themselves in order to talk with their partners and kids about relationships, sex and pleasure, free of shame. She dispels taboo and challenges parents to let go of the minimal or faulty education they received so that they can share an ongoing, healthy dialogue that teaches kids how to know themselves, set boundaries, respect others and expect respect in return. She is the author of Read Me: A Parental Primer for “The Talk.” As a mother of two young women herself, Dr. Lanae understands the importance of getting it “right” the first time, as she has created an environment of openness and body positivity in her own home.

Jennie Williams is founder and CEO of Enhance the UK, a user-led charity that aims to help people with physical and sensory disabilities to live a full life. Today we learned about the challenges individuals with disabilities and in care homes when it comes to sexual health, loneliness, physical touch, and relationships, many of which we as able-bodied don’t even think about. And Jennie reminds us that the more we can talk openly about what life for people looks like in a care home and view these situations with empathy, the closer we get to making healthy sexual practices and sexual health education accessible for all.

After growing up in a conservative Latin community, she works hard to offer people medically accurate information and the opportunity to freely ask questions and re-learn their sex education.

Today we are wrapping up the first part of our Sexual Health Series with an inspiring conversation from OBGYN Dr. Lauren Demosthenes. Dr. D was the first female OBGYN in her community in South Carolina and has continued to pave the way for women and make family planning and childbirth more accessible and educational. We thank her for that, and feel so excited knowing there are so many more options for prenatal care than one might realize! Enjoy this episode where Dr. D tells us what prenatal care we might have access to, but don't know about yet, shares her experience through a "postpartum wakeup call," and join us in February for part 2 of the Sexual Health Series.

Behavioral profiler, dating coach, and founder of Love with Intelligence Lily Walford spends an entire hour educating us about finding love amongst the noise - the dating industry - that often provides false solutions and results in unhealthy relationships. She instead focuses on tailored solutions to help us trust ourselves and ultimately find a positive and genuine connection. She also teaches us how to spot a narcissist, and how to profile someone in under 6 minutes. She encourages us to deconstruct our ideas about love, relationships, and compatibility and reminds us that we are not responsible for someone else's happiness, so it's important to start from a place of wholeness.

Basically, know who you are and know what you are looking for.

Wondering if you are self-aware enough to have a healthy and strong connection? Check out the show notes for Love with Intelligence, education, information, and resources.

Politician, attorney, and environmentalist Heather Toney joins us this week for a powerful conversation on clean air and community. Her lifetime of service has provided communities the chance to discuss and address environmental injustices, and she herself has accomplished a lot of firsts - one being the first African American, first female, and youngest mayor of Greenville, Mississippi! She then moved on to the EPA, where she was appointed Regional Administrator by President Obama. Since then, she has become a senior advisor at Mom’s Clean Air Force and is currently serving as an environmental justice liaison for the Environmental Defense Fund. She’s been awarded a number of accolades and titles, one of our favorites being Essence Magazine’s “one of the most remarkable women in the world,” which is the title we would give her if we could choose! So you can imagine how beyond thrilled we were to sit down with a dedicated contributor to environmental justice and such a powerful conversationalist.

To kick off our environmental health series, we had an amazing conversation with Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist, Andrew Bryant of Climate & Mind - an organization dedicated to education and support on the topic of eco-anxiety. Andrew reminds us how crucial it is to recognize the signs of eco-anxiety and preserve our relationship between the environment and our overall wellbeing. He helps clients cope with concerns involving the climate emergency and also wants us to understand the beauty around us and how "exposure to nature and connection to our natural environment facilitates health while making us more satisfied, happy and healthy." Andrew helped us untangle the concerns that many of us face when deciding to be parents and bringing another person into this world or the worries associated with leaving our children a place on this planet.

To continue our depression series, we are chatting with the most wonderful guest, Trevor Leeper. He is a mental health advocate in the LGBTQ community and has a magnificent story to share with us about the struggle he faced coming out in a religious household with a family that didn't quite understand what he was going through or support him in the way he needed. Now, he’s in a wonderful place and caring for the community and others who are in similar circumstances in the way he wish he had been cared for. Trevor is such a light, and he inspires us through his example of being someone going through dark times, questioning their worth, but ultimately making it through the other side stronger and more whole.

In this episode of the depression series, Alenis shares her story of resilience, advocacy, and bravery. She started her journey as a young professional studying medicine in Argentina, forced to leave the program when she was diagnosed with an illness that spiraled, leaving her with many more years of chronic illness and the mental health struggles that come along with that. Though through it all, she has found happiness, fulfillment, love, and purpose, reminding us that a depression diagnosis is difficult, it's valid, but it’s something that can be better understood and managed. While everyone's story is different, hearing Alenis' experience reminded us that not all illnesses look alike, and even if you are suffering from an invisible illness, there can be better days ahead. We had such an inspirational conversation with former Sgt Royal Marine Commando, father of four, author, coach, and CEO of The Man Coach, James Boardman. He gets real about family, PTSD, mental and emotional health and his ability to turn passion into purpose. He helps men suffering from identity loss find their true purpose, something that he experienced through his journey with depression. While much of his experience surrounded his time in and immediately after the military, the themes of feeling burdensome and not knowing where you quite fit in is something that many of us have experienced at one time or another and is the reason his wisdom is so important to those, especially in the military, who might not have the support that they need.

New York Times columnist and author of The Price You Pay For College: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make, Ron Lieber takes us through the emotional, spiritual, and financial journey associated with choosing a college or university. What is worth paying for when it comes to higher education? After this transparent and practical conversation, we discovered that the answer is largely based on one's own family values. When faced with, what feels like, a high-stakes investment, it is important to first unravel the emotions and baggage we hold onto as well as educate ourselves on the mysterious world of financial aid and merit aid packages.

While this decision can feel daunting, understanding what we are paying for, and why, can lead to a confident decision for each member of the family. As always, we encourage you to have these conversations early and often.

McKenna and Sean share their own decision-making along their educational journeys.

To kick off the financial health series, Brittan Leiser chats with the team about personal finance and explains how starting off the new year strong might begin with conversations about finance.

Whether talking with our partner, children, friends or roommates, being honest and open about our situation and supporting one another can make an impact on every aspect of health. Her advice? Keep it a judgment-free zone. She models healthy conversation-starters so that discussions might be productive rather than contentious. She encourages clients to look at their budget each month so that they can course-correct in real-time and plan in advance of important events so that when the time comes, there is money to cover it. Brittan warns of the falsehoods that lie on social media and how comparing ourselves to that false financial narrative can be detrimental to financial health, as well as mental health! This episode is packed with practical wisdom about starting and maintaining healthy financial relationships.

Surprisingly, McKenna, Karen and Sean bring the conversation back to Gilmore Girls and Star Trek.

In Part 2 of our discussions on addiction, Andrew Jurek explains his experience, which was partly detailed in his mother Deborah’s book High. Last week, Deborah spoke of her perspective as a parent of a young person struggling with addiction, and Andrew is here to share how he felt in his most challenging moments and lessons learned along the way. He explains what goes through the mind of someone unable to control their addiction and how it can happen to anyone. His advice: nix the “not my child” philosophy. Andrew believes there's not always a way to prevent a young person from going down this path, but opening the lines of communication early within families is the key to helping those struggling know they are not alone. We thank Andrew and Deborah for sharing their stories and especially for continuing to seek to help others facing similar circumstances and fight stigmas.

Karen reflects on addiction she’s seen in her family members' lives and how it doesn’t have to define you.

We love and nurture our kids; though as they become teens, there can be a disconnection. It is challenging to know if it is 'normal' teen behavior or something more. Author and executive coach Deborah Edwards found herself in a moment of 'something more'. While her son, Andrew, became addicted to drugs, she had to balance her own health through his recovery and relapse. It is a beautiful story of parental love, self-love and triumph. She shares this journey in her book, High, and in this episode, provides tips for parents to navigate challenging moments with children and addiction. She explains the concept of patient love as well as living experientially and how those two practices helped her find deeper understanding along her journey. Her bravery and awareness help us to understand that one person’s journey, even that of a child, does not have to be your own.

Sean shares how he learned about addiction growing up with his drug-busting Special Agent father.

Psychiatric Nurse and Mental Health Coach, Sarah Baxter, works with patients facing psychosis and describes how families can cope and detect early signs in adolescents. She explains the dopamine hypothesis, symptoms of psychosis and the bucket theory so that we can recognize and get early treatment for the people we love. Because psychosis can look different for each person, she illustrates how to look for changes in behavior to catch it early in order to get well again and demonstrates how to model healthy behavior and start conversations about this important topic.

McKenna, Karen and Sean consider the size of their own buckets and how they might be more empathetic to those with different stressors and capacity to cope.

Author and father, Michael Tyler shares how a challenging conversation with his young son led him to pen a children’s book explaining that which is beautiful and unique - the color of our skin. Michael explains how race is not attached to biology but makes such an impact on how we see ourselves and how we are viewed by others. He insists that we move from tolerance to acceptance which requires recognition, acknowledgment and affirmation, a lesson that’s been consistent, if not adapted, as his sons have gotten older. His story of love and persistence led to the publication of this important message published by the Chicago Children’s Museum and many inspiring professional partnerships, including the Clinton Foundation.

McKenna, Karen and Sean continue to take an inventory on their own habits and responsibilities.

Journalist, mental health advocate and Miss Wisconsin USA, Gabriella Deyi, shares all of the "dips and curves" along her path from scientist to titleholder, and the challenging journey that led her to a strong relationship with nutrition and body image. She explains how there is no beauty without purpose behind it and the importance of competing in pageants with healthy practices, confidence and integrity. She discusses the pitfalls of focusing on external beauty and how under-eating and over-exercising isn’t the path to happiness or fulfillment.

Gabby talks directly to parents and young adults about what’s truly important (hint: not what we see on social media) and how finding her "why" helped her turn passion into purpose, as well as offering young people action steps to understanding their true worth in a discussion that dives into nutrition, as much as food insecurity, race and empowerment.

Sean Karen and McKenna discuss the importance of community and the impact of change which, for them, starts with respect and understanding.

We are finishing our series on anxiety with Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Jennifer Bellingrodt. She explains how for many, anxiety is a reaction to a perception of a loss of control. The antidote? You guessed it - control. The good news is there are things that we DO have control over -- our reactions, our physical body and what we do with our time. She shares how some changes in practice may make you feel differently each day. She also explains how we can help the kids we love recognize their own control AND answers questions from listeners. This episode is packed with practical wisdom and we love it!

Sean enlightens us about hammock yoga and we find out that McKenna has taken up extreme cat-cowing.
