David Cohen joins Amy for a wide-ranging discussion this week. He is a Wellington journalist and author whose work has been widely published in New Zealand and around the world. His writings have appeared in The New York Times, The Spectator, The Jerusalem Report and The Christian Science Monitor. He is the author of six books, the latest of which, Book of Cohen, had to do with the late Leonard Cohen. He describes his personal enthusiasms as poetry, philosophy and Middle Eastern cooking. The last he has parlayed into a popular newsletter called Middle Feast--which he says is currently finding an appreciative readership at a time such as this when governments have shut down the economy and told people to stay in their own kitchens.

In September 2013, after hearing Ted Cruz's "filibuster" on Obamacare, in which he exhorted everyone to read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, I did a show here at BlogTalk, asking "Is Ted Cruz 'The Guy'?" The answer: yes, based on everything we knew at the time, it seemed so.
Now, with Cruz vowing to make same-sex marriage a central issue of his Presidential campaign, as well as proposing a Constitutional amendment that would make Supreme Court tenures subject to retention elections, is Cruz a candidate who still deserves our support?
The Supreme Court reached the right result on same-sex marriage, but for the wrong reasons. What's worse, some in the "LGBT" community are saying that marriage wasn't really the goal, that their goal was to force those who reject same-sex marriage to deal with them as they would any other couples.

Today's show title was inspired (pun intended) by the juxtaposition of two stories about the future of education in the United States. One story is about a new startup that aims to inspire grade school children to love and learn about science. The other is about a White House official who, after considering the system of educational indoctrination in China, concluded that, even in the United States, "high schools probably have a significant ability to move students toward what they consider 'a correct worldview, a correct view on life, and a correct value system.'"
But, as we'll see, the theme can be carried beyond the realm of education, to Obama's use of his "pen and a phone," to his characterization of Obamacare, to Islam and other totalitarian religions, and more. This dichotomy might even help explain the success of non-liberal talk radio!

One NYT columnist is even urging Obama to ignore the rule of law and unilaterally raise the debt ceiling if the House Republicans demand concessions from him. Showcasing their tremendous powers of evasion, the Senate has voted 79-19 for cloture on the continuing resolution (CR). As I type this, the Senate is voting to remove the language in the House CR that defunded Obamacare. So today's show will unfortunately not be a victory celebration, although ultimate victory is still possible, depending on what the House does in the coming days (and, possibly, weeks). What I would like to do today is celebrate the fact that we have a politician in the U.S. Senate who is willing to stand up against socialized medicine, in a principled way. And the bonus: he read several passages from Ayn Rand's work in the process of doing so.
