Up-to-date HARVEST NEWS : The Harvest USA Report has been a favorite since 1985 and is produced by Howard Hale. The program airs twice daily M-F on great radio stations across the true midwest.
The interview demonstrates an in-depth understanding of farm operations, challenges faced, and strategic choices made to enhance productivity and manage resources effectively at Jensen Farms.
Thacker has developed a proprietary design for distillation vessels that are more efficient than older technologies. These new systems use insulated tubs and lower pressure steam to reduce thermal degradation and energy use. The modern method cuts cook times significantly compared to the older "yellow tubs" and allows for more effective steam utilization. The distillation process involves filling 40-foot trailers with the crop, running steam through it, and eventually using the leftover material as organic matter to enrich the soil.
Dale Thacker, a distillation expert, has been cultivating exotic crops such as peppermint, spearmint, and dill in Alberta for over 40 years. The mint industry in the area began in the late 1980s, followed by dill cultivation for essential oils used in the pickle industry. Thacker has also experimented with other crops like basils and tarragon but has focused primarily on mint and dill. The harvesting process involves drying the crops, chopping them, and using distillation techniques to extract oils, which are sold to companies like Colgate.
Dave Hermesch, a farmer in southeast Tulsa, discusses current challenges on his farm. His soybeans, which were planted later than usual, are suffering due to insufficient rainfall and require both rain and heat to develop properly. Hermesch notes variability in crop quality, with some soybean fields looking promising while others have poor germination despite replanting efforts. He also operates farmland 85 miles away but manages the distance with equipment that allows efficient transportation of machinery.
Farming around the area involves both irrigated and dryland practices, with about a third of the farmland irrigated. For soybeans, no special irrigation techniques are employed before harvest, unlike crops such as potatoes. Hermesch uses MacDon Flex Drapers to cut soybeans close to the ground and highlights the absence of rocks in the soil due to long-term no-till farming.
Hermesch expresses contentment with his current equipment, which mainly includes a large planter without the notorious three-point hitch. Despite challenges, recent rains provided some relief, though he notes a desire for more consistent rainfall patterns to support crop growth. The conversation reflects common agricultural issues with moisture availability, resonating with other regions experiencing dry conditions.
National Ag Week is all about celebrating the farmers, ranchers and agricultural professionals who work hard to feed, fuel and clothe the world.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture says it's the perfect time to thank Nebraska farmers, ranchers and others for providing food, feed and fuel and other products we depend on every day.
This week the Nebraska Department of Agriculture will be posting trivia questions on their Facebook page and we'll share them with you here. A chance to learn about agriculture and play along for a chance to win some great prizes from Nebraska Commodity Boards.
Commodity groups, support Nebraska producers and our agricultural industry all year and especially during National Ag Week. NDA has a list of all the organizations that they are thankful for on their Facebook page and of course you find that right through our page at Harvest USA Report.
Also, as mentioned earlier last week on the program, David Misener and several other custom harvesters will be in Washington DC during National Ag Week to discuss important issues and meet with representatives. Tune in tomorrow for more about National Ag Week.
That's going to do it for today's Harvest USA Report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.
Welcome to the Harvest USA Report. I'm Brian Hale. An original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting, now expanded throughout North America. The Harvest USA Report is brought to you by Hale Multimedia, the company behind Cattleman's Corner.
Here's Custom Harvester David Meisner to tell us more about the U.S. Custom Harvesters.
That's a pretty big organization isn't it?
"Yeah that's right, we've got membership all the way across the United States and even in other countries."
And the Custom Harvester's annual convention just got over what at the end of February was it?
"Actually the end of January is when it was and yes and we had a good turnout in Des Moines and pleased with all the attendance that we had from our regular membership as well as our vendors and machinery manufacturers for instance like Krohn. Yes, Mr. Krohn was there in attendance himself, very nice, I mean can you even say you know, like Claas. Mrs. Claas has been there the past two years being there in attendance too and that's just really nice to have those individuals, and they recognize who the U.S. Custom Harvester Association is and the importance of it for the nation."
That was Oklahoma Custom Harvester David Meisner. That's going to do it for today's Harvest USA report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless, I'm Brian Hale.
Let's continue our conversation with Oklahoma Custom Harvester David Misener.
So does that put you on track then for a normal start in your season?
"Time will tell. We've got a lot of time between now and then and see if it stays warm. Or if we get, seems like you've ever got some cool wet, then it just allows that wheat to take a little more time and stool if it does or just prolong that growing part and filling out and make more bushels in them kernels. So we'll just see how it comes along. But we definitely got, I think, a pretty good start and my farmers seem to be at least optimistic about the way the weather is for the start of the year."
I also understand as a consultant or an advisor to the US Custom Harvesters that you're going to be in Washington soon. Is that correct?
"Yeah, next week is National Ag Day. And so the US Custom Harvesters Board has been going to National Ag Day for quite a few years and we're going to go there and meet with some of our senators and representatives from across America and discuss some of the issues that we have with the Custom Harvesters Association and thoughts and ideas. And so we're going to see what we can do to continue to grow the relationships that we have with the individuals out there as well as discuss with some new individuals that we maybe haven't done yet."

We're on with David Meisner, custom harvester from Oklahoma, and David, tell us again where you're from and what you've been up to lately, please.
Yeah, so I'm in Elk City, Oklahoma. It's on Interstate 40, about halfway between Amarillo, Texas and Oklahoma City, a little closer to the city than Amarillo. Been enjoying some rain and moisture in this part of the world and getting my combines ready for harvest and the rest of my equipment that I need to as well. And then I always do a little bit of fixing for other individuals as well to keep some cashflow going.
But I'm really pleased to have the moisture that we had because we had that cold spell, a couple of weeks ago, and then it got warm. And then we got some rain and stayed warm and had some more rain this past Saturday. And all the wheat and the grasses have really started to take off and grow and sure have been enjoying this moisture and heat that we've had now. And I can say all my farmers have been trying hard to get some fertilizer put down. And you can tell that the wheat is enjoying what's going on because of the color of the wheat. It's got really nice color. And just in general, it looks pretty nice. And some of it is kind of short because we were last fall planted a little bit on the late side. Some of it because we had really dry through October. And some guys waited and planted till after that. And it took off and grew. So we've got a, I think, a pretty good start for this year for the week to grow.
The Harvest USA Report has been on the air for 30 years.
It was 1994 when Greg Erlich of the U.S. Custom Harvesters approached KSIR Radio in Fort Morgan, Colorado. It was a great idea and it's lasted 30 years and still going strong. Despite Howard passing away in 2023, the program continues with yours truly. However, times have changed. People aren't answering the phone like they used to with all of the scam callers, so if you have some harvest information, we would appreciate a phone call here at the Harvest USA Report. We'll answer the phone. If you are a farmer, a harvester, a custom harvester, please give us a call at the Harvest USA Report and let us know what information you have about what you're harvesting or what your activity is during the off-season. Many times we are in touch with folks from different continents about what they're harvesting, but folks still like to hear about what's going on right here in North America. And again, a special thanks to our friend and co-host David Woodruff from Alberta, Canada, who has been pitching in since Howard passed away interviewing folks for the Harvest USA Report. We appreciate David's service and look forward to more interesting interviews. Meanwhile, if you work in the agricultural world and you have information about harvesting crops that feed the world, give us a call at the Harvest USA Report. The numbers are on our page at harvesusareport.com.
That's it for the Harvest USA Report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.

Happy New Year from all of us at the Harvest USA report and from all of our co-hosts and guests.
We've been ON-THE-AIR with our trio of Radio programs since 1994, beginning with Cattleman's Corner and Horseman's Corner, then the Harvest USA Report 3 years after that. We are beginning our 31st year on the radio and have expanded our programming. Visit HaleBroadcasting.com.
We really appreciate the participation in our interviews as well as those who listen. And we'd like to thank the many guests that we've had on with very interesting information about different aspects of the cattle business. We've recently learned about things like red light technology, algae, crossbreeding cattle, the world's largest cow, digging up dinosaur bones on the ranch, flood irrigation in Arizona. This year on the Harvest USA report we also learned about pumpkins, cranberries and Christmas trees.
Regardless of who the guest is or what the subject is we want to say thank you for listening and thank you to those who have taken the time to talk with us on the Harvest USA report. We look forward to talking to more of you this year and we dedicate this show today to the memory of Howard Hale who passed away in April of 2023.
I'm humbly blessed by the opportunity to fill those big shoes. We've also had an outstanding year helping those advertise their business through the Harvest USA report as well as building websites, graphical ads, videos and audio ads for those involved in the
world of agriculture. If you need help with any of those things or anything computer or marketing related give us a call. The numbers are on our website.

The appearance of stripe rust adds insult to injury to this year’s wheat crop, but Kansas growers should scout fields and have their management strategy ready for this yield- and quality-limiting disease. Stripe rust has now been detected in 35 Kansas counties, according to Wheat Ag Pest Monitor.
While most of these observations have been at low or trace levels, the K-State Agronomy eUpdate issued on May 2, 2024, noted, “Up until this point, the disease has largely been limited by lack of moisture.” Scattered showers across the state over the weekend and into the start of the week have reduced that limiting factor.
According to Ross Janssen, Chief Meteorologist for Storm Team 12 in Wichita, the precipitation in Dodge City last month was 0.02 inches, tying the 1909 record for the driest April on record.
What’s even worse than a continuing multiyear drought is the loss of hope being felt throughout central and southern Kansas for a crop that, in January and February, was one of the better-looking wheat crops they’d seen in the past ten years.
The condition of the crop has been deteriorating rapidly, especially over the past few weeks, going from 57 percent good to excellent on February 25 to only 31 percent good to excellent by April 28, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
It has suffered from lack of moisture for much of the growing season, especially during the spring green-up. The Kansas wheat crop is also ahead of schedule, with one-third already headed, well ahead of 9 percent last year and 6 percent average. A March 26-27 freeze event took a toll on it, as there was not enough snow cover, and the plants were more advanced than they typically are at the end of March.

THE CICADAS ARE COMING!
Source: University of Illinois Extension news release
URBANA, Ill. -- If you haven't heard the buzz, you will soon. Billions of periodical cicadas are coming, and University of Illinois Extension is sharing information to help track their moves before emergence.
"Historically speaking, 2024 is a big year for periodical cicadas in Illinois," says Ken Johnson, Extension horticulture educator serving Calhoun, Cass, Greene, Morgan, and Scott counties.
Periodical cicada broods XIII and XIX will be emerging throughout much of the state at the same time. Although exact times and locations will be varied, there will be cicadas.
"The simultaneous emergence of these broods is the first time since 1803, and it will not happen again until 2245," says Johnson. "It's an exciting time for those who enjoy insects and natural phenomena."
Although cicadas do not pose a threat to humans or pets, they will be heard. It may get loud depending on the geographic location and the number of cicadas around. According to the National Institutes of Health, calls of male cicadas can reach over 90 decibels, which is as loud as a lawnmower, motorcycle, or tractor.
Jerry Glover shows a perennial wheatgrass plant's long roots which grow deeper than annual plants' roots. Using perennials, crops that can be harvested more than once without replanting, may be the key for feeding more people while conserving farmland soil. "Perennial crops can be grown for more than two years alone or alongside annuals, and they can radically improve soil health and support a healthier community of bacteria and fungi underground. Annuals have to develop roots every year, which means their growing season is much shorter. Perennial roots go deep — some as deep as 10 feet — and they will sustain the plant for many years. Way down there, the roots can capture more groundwater. Those deep, better-established roots also help cycle nutrients in the soil and make them more available to plants". - Jerry Glover

Jim Deibert, Colby, Kan. - (2015 Hall of Fame Inductee, USCHI)
Jim Deibert's passion for excellence is evident in his harvesting operation, from his attention to detail when operating his machines to his focus on each and every member of his crew. And his customers return because they see that passion translated into life-long friendships.
"He's an essential piece to our farming puzzle," said Katie Dilse, Scranton, N.D. "The roar of his combines coming down our road brings goose bumps! Jim, with his entire crew, creates an intensity to our farming operation. His work ethic is second to none. His business model on a handshake is the reason he's so much more than a custom harvester, he's like a Grandpa to our sons. In the hustle and bustle, he makes time to stop for a smile and a joke. He loves his job, and it shows. And we love him."
Jim is loyal to his business partners. In 1988, he was selected by MacDon Industries to test their prototype 36 foot Draper header.
"When they arrived with the header I was skeptical that something that big could work," he recalls. "It looked like a man among boys when it sat in line with my other machines. It was a real crowd stopper along the road. People would just stop and gape, it was just so darn big."
The following season he ordered two of MacDon's headers and has been a customer ever since.
Jim is a founding member of U.S. Custom Harvesters and has served on the board of directors and as president of the organization. In 2013, Jim and his crew were featured in the documentary film, The Great American Wheat Harvest. He played a pivotal role in telling the story of harvest and in helping the film's producer raise the funds needed to produce the film.
Jim has been called by many "the best in the business" and his passion continues to inspire today.
We met Steve and his son, Ryan, along with several others from the Nebraska Alfalfa Marketing Association at the Wichita Falls Ranch and Farm Expo in Texas. They were down as part of the relief efforts for the fires in the panhandle of Texas.

We're talking the Keith Flake. Flake ranch is out south of Apache Junction.
We're here just east of Apache Junction or Mesa, Gold Canyon area
between Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Orange Junction. About 50 sections of state lease.
We don't own an acre and part of it's being developed. Part of it is overrun with recreationists.
The desert floor is brilliant green.
You got, how much rain did you get to get that grass cover?
There, as I recall, about three one inch rains and the spacing was pretty good.
We figured the desert is going to make like a crop. It's going to put on seed, but it comes fast. And then when it turns 100 degrees, it goes fast.
The mesquite beans, there may be some. Or when you get a year without any rain,
the trees don't put any beans?
Oh, it varies from year to year. The most, probably see the first bean in the middle of April. And then it'll be another two or three weeks before there's much of a crop. We used to keep her decals here year round and they were really bean harvesters. The beans are important. They're just not as important as they used to be when we were here year round.
Keith Flake on the Harvest USA Report.

Hello, this is Brian Hale. Howard Hale began the Harvest USA Report in 1997 at the suggestion of then-USCHI board member Greg Erlich. The radio program has been going strong for over 25 years and with Howard's passing, David Woodruff and I have vowed to keep this tradition alive. A great place to check out on a daily basis would be the Harvest USA Report Facebook page for these reports and more. And if you'd like an interview, leave us a note or give David a call. The number is at the top of the page.
When you get there to that page, you'll see that Frederick Harvesting has a cool video made of the 2023 season and the fact that J&A Harvesting is hiring. We've had Jesper Hansen on the phone with us. He's looking for some harvest crew, truck drivers, grain car drivers and combine operators and more, find J&A Harvesting on our Facebook page, and of course, Heil Harvesting... They're not absent, they said. They're just busy! They spent the sunny and warm afternoon recently servicing a John Deere tractor. Changed the oil, cleaned the cab, blew out the filters and greased it, running great and ready to go again.
More updates like these right on Harvest USA Report on Facebook. Also, visit harvestusareport.com for more. That's going to do it for today's report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.

Here's our co-host David Woodruff with Dave Hermish.
So are you harvesting anything lately?
We haven't harvested anything yet, but we've got soybeans that are going to be closed. Probably I'm going to say in a week or 10 days, well maybe you have some ready.
And how do they look?
Oh, five to six weeks ago, and I said we were going to cut the best bean crop we ever cut down here. But now we're probably looking at a 10 or 20 bushel crop. We had a month with no rain and above 100 degree weather every day. We've been getting rain lately. We've had some good rains. They're just a month too late. Now our late beans, they're going to help them some. We're going to have an average crop on our late beans, but early beans aren't going to be worth their due.
Do you have anything besides beans?
There is some corn around here, but in some wheat, but all the wheat gets double crop back to beans.
Custom Harvester Dave Hermesch.

Hello everyone. This is Brian Hale, Howard's son.
At the age of 87, and after broadcasting every weekday for the past 37 years without a break, dad has decided to take early retirement.
I am truly humbled by the opportunity and have been thankful for everything that Howard and Pat offered us when they adopted my little sister and I as rotten pre-teens in the 70's. Howard has never stopped teaching me.
He has graciously taught me what I need to know, and trained me how to do it, so now is the time to make the official transition. I know that I will never match Howard's ability to ask the perfect question, or his knowledge of harvesting, but he has taught me to listen, and that I promise to do as I continue the Harvest USA Report.
Harvesters : Please call me if you have time for a quick interview. 308-635-7271 - Brian
You can call dad too. He'd love to hear from you.
