In this episode we look into how plant-based meat, cultivated meat, and fermentation, can mitigate the environmental impact of our food system, and how more people can be fed with fewer resources.

I talk about this with Elena Walden, Policy Manager at The Good Food Institute Europe, a non-profit, civil society organisation laser-focused on creating a more sustainable, healthy, and just food system. The Good Food Institute works to make plant-based and cultivated meat, dairy, and eggs (real meat, dairy, and eggs, but produced without the use of animals) as delicious, price-competitive, and convenient as possible. Elena is also a former policy maker in the European Parliament.

In sports, there are certain qualities that every top athlete possesses, and that are necessary to become the best. Discipline, perseverance, being able to work hard and to deal with setbacks, are some of those qualities, and these qualities are also transferable to the business world. However, not all people that are successful as athlete, are able to make the transition, after their competition career ends. My next guest is someone who not only made this transition successfully, but who is crushing it in business and has developed himself into an extremely talented entrepreneur, besides still being an active coach and deeply rooted in sports.

Although he doesn`t need an introduction, here's a summary of his long list of achievements:

Jimmy Pedro is a Judo World Champion, and double Olympic Judo medallist. In 2018 he became the first ever American judoka to be inducted into the International Judo Federation Hall of Fame. Among many other achievements and honors, he was chosen Player of the Year, by Real Judo Magazine, 4 times! Jimmy holds a 7th degree Black Belt, and as Olympic coach, he was responsible for multiple Olympic Judo champions, including Kayla Harrison, Travis Stevens, and Ronda Rousey, who later became UFC champion. Today he is the president of FUJI Mats and vice president of FUJI Sports, 2 hugely successful companies with 8-figure revenues, and with Jimmy’s mindset and drive, he’s only just getting warmed up!

Most of the solutions pushed by mainstream media, for issues such as climate change, feeding the world, and desertification, are driven by high-tech innovation and often re-locate the problem instead of solving it. In this episode of Business Podcast Groningen I talk to Richard Perkins about the proven method that he has developed for tackling the above problems, focusing on the way we produce our food.

Richard Perkins is one of the world's leading experts on Regenerative Agriculture and farm-scale Permaculture design. He’s the author of multiple books on the topic, and has worked as a consultant in the agricultural industry across the globe.

Besides being an expert in his field, he is also a successful entrepreneur, and has established a highly profitable farm in Sweden, which has become Europe’s leading example. Next to focusing on regenerating the ecosystem and soil, his farm Ridgedale is also a training center for other entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector.
