I face the dramatic social, environmental and political situation we are in. I am moved by inspirational people. I outline a just, sustainable and happy society to strive for, in the European Union and beyond. I propose concrete tools to achieve it.
Clothing, under its current model of throw-away “fast fashion” is one of the most polluting and resource-intensive industries. The EDO collective in Antwerp promotes clothing that lasts long, is repairable and is made ethically.
Cods used to be so abundant around Newfoundland (Eastern coast of Canada) that fishermen came there all the way from Europe. Due to over-fishing, the population has collapsed brutally – with no sign of recovery.
Our ancestors developed technologies that used very little resources or energy. Re-inventing these technologies with the current scienific capacities will be very useful to define the low-tech material world of a sustainable future.
Global warming is not just about increasing the power of air-conditioning by 1 or 2°C. If left unchecked, some self-reinforcing phenomena can bring it totally out of control.
