The heart is fundamentally “deceitful above all things, and desperately sick” (Jer 17:9) - this opening establishes humanity’s spiritual condition.Explore the universal nature of depravity: all have sinned and fall short ofGod’s glory (Rom 3:23) and none seeks God, all have turned aside, and no one does good (Rom 3:10–18). Consider the origin of this condition—humans are conceived in iniquity (Ps 51:5) and its manifestation: evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, and other vices flow from within the heart and defile a person (Mark 7:21–23). A powerful sub-theme is humanity’s self-deception: there is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death (Prov 14:12).

Genuine repentance doesn’t fade after an emotional moment—it keeps bearing fruit in an ongoing life of obedience, surrender, and spiritual renewal (Ac. 26:20; Mt. 3:8; Col. 2:6). Real Christians keep repenting, because grace not only forgives but fuels a lifelong pursuit of holiness.

View Details

Biblical repentance involves more than regret—it requires a decisive break from sin and a personal submission to Jesus Christ as Lord (Ac. 3:19; Lk. 13:3; 1 Th. 1:9–10). This turning point is the heart of true conversion, marking a new allegiance and a transformed direction in life.

View Details

Repentance must express itself in honest, humble confession—naming sin for what it is, without excuses, blame-shifting, or half-hearted admissions (1 Jn. 1:9; Prov. 28:13; Ps. 32:5). When we confess biblically, we agree with God, we expose the darkness, and we open the door to restoration.

View Details

True repentance begins when the Spirit of God opens our eyes to the weight of our sin—producing sorrow, not just over the consequences, but over our offense against a holy God (2 Cor. 7:9–10; Ps. 51:3–4). This sobering conviction is not self-generated guilt but a gracious confrontation that prepares the heart for real change.

In James 4:11-12, we study the harm that comes from a critical spirit. In order to guard against being critical, we need a higher view of God and a lower view of ourselves. We must remember we are held accountable to God and need to examine ourselves with Scripture often. To combat a critical spirit, we also need to sacrificially love others. Rather than nitpicking and fault-finding, we should strive to care and do good to others. In the end, sometimes correction is needed and if so we must not shy away from it but rather speak the truth in love for the good of others and the glory of God.

View Details

In James 4:7-10, we study the need for repentance. People should mourn over their sin and the sin that takes place in the world. Genuine sadness is a proper response to sin and should lead to repentance. True repentance is not merely an emotion but a resolve to turn from sin and to God. Repentance is shown through a change in internal desires which manifests in outward behavior. James gives an encouragement to humbly repent because those who do will be exalted. There can be joy as a result of repentance because we are reconciled to God.

View Details

In James 4:4-6, we study friendship with the world versus friendship with God. God is a jealous God who does not tolerate unfaithfulness. He hated when Israel was unfaithful to him and also when we compromise and follow after the world. God makes it clear in James that you are either all in or out. The way to be a friend of God is to admit your need for forgiveness and come to the Lord humbly in repentance. Pride makes us follow after the world and our sinful flesh so we need to come to the Lord in humble repentance to be made a friend of God.

View Details

In James 4:1-3, we study the root of quarrels and fights—our selfish desires. Believers are still encased in sinful flesh but have been born again by the Spirit and given new desires. The believer can resist and have victory over sin through the Spirit. Believers can also look to Christ’s example when facing temptation. Believers must copy Christ’s example of reliance on God’s Word and prayer. Christians can grow in aligning their desires with God’s through regular and rightful prayer.

View Details

In James 3:17-18, we study godly wisdom. In a world lacking wisdom, we must grow to be wise people who can give godly counsel and advice. The way to examine ourselves for wisdom is by looking for the righteous behavior that characterizes godly wisdom. James 3:17-18 gives many qualities that are present in the life of a wise person. Wisdom is demonstrated through how we treat God, his Word, and other people. We should aspire to grow in godliness and the fruit it produces.

View Details

In James 3:13-16, we study the wisdom of the world—characterized by being jealous, bitter, and selfish. The world says to make this life all about you and live like this life is all there is, but that is foolish in God’s eyes. We are reminded by Scripture that God brings low those with high egos and this life is fleeting and temporary. Rather than striving for self-praise and glory in this life, we should live humbly. Christ set the example of humility through his birth, life, and death—we would be wise to learn from his example.

View Details

In James 3:9-12, we study the impulsiveness of the tongue. Man’s natural tendency is to “fit in” with our words depending on the context—even if it takes dishonesty. We concern ourselves with talking in a way that others would like rather than asking if God is pleased with those words. James 3 makes clear that just as God designed nature to function a certain way, so too did he design our mouth to be used a certain way. We must be thoughtful about using our speech to bring glory to God and good to others.

View Details

In James 3:5b-8, we study the damaging impact our words can make. Just as a wild fire has devastating consequences, so too can our words. In order to correct sinful speech we must recognize the root of it—a sinful heart. It is easy to say we will “just watch what we say”, but James 3:8 says no human being can tame the tongue. We need to submit to Jesus as Lord and ask him to transform our hearts. Once we have been changed by Christ, we can have victory over wrongful speech and use our words for God’s glory!

View Details

In James 3:1-5a, we study the importance of our words. Believers need to watch what they say since it is so easy to mess up and sin with our words. God cares about all aspects of our speech: normal speech, self-talk, written speech, recorded speech, and nonverbal speech—and we should as well. We must be wise by practicing restraint with our words in situations we tend to be reckless. By growing in self-controlled speech we can grow in spiritual maturity in other areas of life. We must hold back careless words and rather use our words for good. May we encourage others and honor Christ with our speech!

View Details

In 1 Samuel 20, we saw what faithful friends look like in the relationship of Jonathan and David. They not only had superficial things in common such as being Israelites, brothers-in-law, and men of war, but they also were men of God who walked with the Lord. Their shared, deep-rooted faith in God is what they built their friendship on. We must also ensure that our friendships are founded in a relationship with God. Because of this foundation, we saw that David and Jonathan were not passive with one another, but able to love sacrificially and intentionally. So then, in order to cultivate meaningful friendships, we must continually remember and live out God’s purposes in our friendships by choosing to love our friends sacrificially.

(You need to) Commit Yourself Daily to God’s Word and Work

View Details

In Romans 12:1-2, we were reminded that God has shown us an incredible amount of love and mercy in sending His Son to be the atoning sacrifice on behalf of undeserving sinners to liberate them from sin and death. Because of that, our passage urged us to daily dedicate ourselves to God by resisting conformity to the world and embracing a mind and lifestyle aligned with God’s will. We were further reminded that a renewed mind produces a transformed lifestyle, which only comes through the daily discipline of remaining in God’s word. We must fix our eyes on the mercy of God in Christ to propel us into that obedience!

In James 2:18-26, we study how saving faith produces a lifestyle of good works. James proves this through three examples. Demons, the negative example in verses 18-19, have a “faith” that is merely head knowledge and not saving faith. This leads to fear because of their coming judgment. Abraham and Rahab, the positive examples in verses 20-26, demonstrate their faith in God by their obedience. Abraham proved his faith through his willingness to trust God and obey him in difficult circumstances. Rahab displayed her faith through a repentance that transformed her from a lifestyle of sin to a concern for God and his people.

View Details

In James 2:14-17, we study genuine saving faith. James responds to the claim that there is a saving faith that “does not have works”. He makes clear in this passage that genuine saving faith leads to good works. This is crucial in understanding the response to the gospel. Works do not contribute to our salvation, but they are evidence of a genuine trust in Christ. We need to be ready to respond to cults who teach works based salvation while also defending against those who claim Christian saving faith is just a matter of “mental ascent”.

View Details

In Philippians 2:14-16 we read about God’s command to stop complaining. Complaining is an expression of your dissatisfaction with how things are and ultimately a complaint towards God. It is a sinful habit that can be dressed up in phrases such as “venting” or “getting something off your chest.” An attitude of contentment or discontentment drastically affects our witness in the world. By being familiar with what God’s Word says, about his goodness and sovereignty we are able to be “lights.” Understanding that our faithfulness to this command can bring joy to the people discipling us, should motivate us.

View Details

In James 2:8-13, we study the strictness of God’s law. God’s rules are made clear in Scripture and he demands them to be kept perfectly. However, through God’s law, we become more aware of our own sinfulness and inability to keep his rules. By breaking one of God’s laws we become guilty of them all. The only way to have our guilt and punishment removed is through Christ. Once someone has been forgiven of their sin, God’s rules turn from duty to delight. They are no longer a list of instructions that are burdensome and condemning, but believers are now freed to obey God wholly. Believers are to live out God’s law by loving others as God has loved them.

View Details

In James 2:1-7, we study the sin of favoritism within the church. James writes to first-century believers who are tempted to treat people at church differently because of their status and wealth. He reminds them that favoritism is not in line with genuine faith! By treating the rich honorably and the poor miserably they are making themselves out to be God and creating distinctions that displease God. God cares for all people regardless of status, position, wealth, or knowledge. The call is for our students to do the same. May The Narrow, and CBC as a whole, be a place that is welcoming to newcomers!

View Details

In James 1:26-27, we study helpful tests we can use to examine our lives to see whether our faith is genuine or not. James does not want his reader to be deceived of their standing with God. Having a controlled tongue, caring for those in need, and staying away from bad influences are the three tests given in these verses. These outward actions are “fruit” of a heart that has been transformed by Christ. For the believer, these tests bring great assurance while for the unbeliever it stresses the need of trust in Christ. In James 1:22-25, we study the need to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only. It’s easy to just “go through the motions” when interacting with Scripture, but that is a huge detriment to ourselves. When we listen to the Bible but don’t put it into practice, it’s as foolish as looking into a mirror and not doing anything about what you see. We need to engage with Scripture anticipating change to take place. We must allow God’s Word to cut open and expose our lives as Hebrews 4:12-13 says so we can live holy lives.

View Details

In James 1:19-21, we study the need for us to be good listeners. In our day and age, people are quick to voice their ideas and opinions and slow to listen to others. the Bible gives us the correction to be slow to speak and quick to hear. We must not have a “know it all” attitude, but humbly listen to criticism and correction from others. We should be teachable individuals. Finally, we should be most eager to listen to correction from Scripture. May we welcome and embrace God’s Word and the wisdom it gives! In 1 Peter 2:1-3, we study the ways that Peter exhorts believers to grow in godliness. One avenue is by putting away sin. Believers should not tolerate sin but should be quick to put it to death when it becomes apparent in their lives. Another avenue to grow is through craving God’s Word. Believers need the Word of God to live and grow, so they should learn to have a childlike dependence on Scripture. Lastly, God’s goodness should motivate us toward this endeavor. His kindness toward us should drive us to love his Word and pursue increased Christlikeness. Godly Cravings (1 Peter 2:1-3) | Luke Larco Compass Bible Church Junior High Ministry

In James 1:16-18, we study the goodness of God. When we go through difficult times we may be tempted to think that God does not care for us. When we are tempted to think that we must remind ourselves of God’s good gifts to us each day, the cost of salvation, and the faithfulness of God. This will correct our faulty thoughts about God and make us more thankful for God’s constant blessings in our life. Rather than taking for granted all he has done for us; we can grow to be more appreciative of his goodness towards us daily. In James 1:13-15, we study temptation and how to resist it. James makes clear that we should not blame God for our temptations but rather the source of them are our sinful desires. We are lured and drawn into sin because of our sinful flesh. Once we know where the source is, we can rightly deal with temptation. We need God to change our hearts and give us new desires. Believers are given new desires that wage war with our old flesh. We can have victory over temptation by taking sin seriously and dealing with it as God would want us to.

View Details

In James 1:12, we study the endurance believers are to have in the face of difficulties. Hard times are not an excuse to sin, but rather we should learn faithful endurance through them. We can learn from how Jesus faced intense suffering and hardship and yet never mocked or reviled in return. Our main motivator for obedience should be a genuine love for God. All of God’s blessings to us should cause us to respond with joyful obedience. God also lays out heavenly rewards as an additional motivator to obedience. In James 1:9-11, we study the eternal mindset that is to characterize believers. James writes to Christians who may be tempted to focus on their earthly circumstances rather than their eternal destination. He reminds them of the brevity of life and the transitory nature of earthly possessions. We would be wise to learn from that as well. Rather than being caught up with money, possessions, fame, or status may we treasure our status through Christ! In James 1:5-8, we uncover our need to ask God for wisdom. We need God-given wisdom to live how God would want us to. God promises to give wisdom to believers who ask in full trust. It is easy to pray unconvincingly, but we can gain assurance by reminding ourselves that God keeps his promises. This should embolden us to pray regularly, confidently, and expectantly. However, God’s promise to give wisdom to those who ask applies to believers and not those who are “half in and half out”. We must examine whether we are double-minded or if we are fully devoted to the Lord. Needing Answers (James 1:5-8) | Pop Quiz (Part 2) | Nathan Yovichin Compass Bible Church Junior High Ministry

In James 1:1-4, we study the direction given by James to the Jewish Christians who are going through trials in the 1st century. He urges them to not complain and grumble, but rather to rejoice despite their difficult circumstances. He reminds them to look past the trial and focus on the end goal of trials—increased holiness. We too should learn to be joyful when trials come because they are meant to grow us. We should seek to grow in holiness through each trial that we face—learning from the example of Christ in how to endure hardship.

In Proverbs 6:6-11, we study the example of the ant to learn how to be a hard worker. Man’s natural tendency is to be lazy and unproductive. We love sleep, make excuses not to work, and are quick to procrastinate. We need to combat those lazy tendencies and rather learn to be disciplined even when our feelings want us not to be. By remembering the benefit of work and experiencing the joy of work we can resolve to be disciplined. May we cultivate a hard-working attitude now that leads to Christ-honoring diligence in our lives. Slothful Summer (Proverbs 6:6-11) | Nathan Yovichin Compass Bible Church Junior High Ministry

In Matthew 7:24-27, we study Jesus’ exhortation to put his words into practice. Those listening to Jesus’ sermon on the mount heard what he said, but not many did what Jesus said. How true is that today? We must not think that Bible intake is good if it falls short of Bible application. We need to pursue daily obedience to Scripture. Our sinful inclinations drive us toward worthless pursuits so we need to strategically work to apply the Bible. May we put a plan in place to be obedient to Scripture every time we read, study, or listen to it. Isn’t the Bible…Just Head Knowledge? This week we studied Ephesians 2:1-10 and remember the sermons that Pastor Mike preached at Revival 2022. We are not born into a right relationship with God but are dead in our sins. We are ruled by our sinful passions and desires. In spite of our sin and wickedness, God showed us love, grace, and mercy through Jesus. Because of the work of Jesus, we can respond to the offer of salvation with repentance and trust. We are not saved through our merit, but by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. As a result, Christians live out a life of obedience to Christ from a heart that is transformed by Jesus. Revival is Only Beginning | Jr. High Ministry | Nathan Yovichin

In Psalm 119:97-104, we study the love of God’s Word that is clear in this passage. Believers are to cherish and be excited to be in God’s Word. Unfortunately, the Bible is viewed by many today as boring and confusing. This causes great apathy and disinterest in Scripture. Psalm 119 states clearly the benefits that come from Scripture. Wisdom, understanding, and growth come from the Bible—so we should love it. We can cultivate a greater love of Scripture by studying it, understanding it, and rightly putting it to practice. In 2 Timothy 3:14-17, we study the usefulness of Scripture. The Bible is not only impactful to its original audience but is practical and valuable for every person throughout human history (regardless of age, background, and geographical location). The Bible teaches us the truth, exposes wickedness, and points us to rightful living. If we want to be effective Christians for God’s kingdom we need to daily be in the Word. We should seek to cultivate a heart that loves God’s Word and desires to follow its commands completely. Isn’t the Bible…Useless? In Numbers 23:19, we study the truthfulness of God and his words. God is completely different from man in that he always speaks the truth. God has given us his message in Scripture which is without errors. The Bible is not only error-free but is incapable of erring. Believing in an error-filled Bible is an affront to God and his nature. Many will claim to find errors and contradictions in the Bible, but by studying Scripture we can affirm the Bible’s truthfulness. May we read and study God’s Word often to respond to the lies propagated about Scripture. Isn’t the Bible…Filled with Errors? In 2 Peter 1:16-21, we study why we can trust the Bible as God’s Word. There are many attacks on the Bible from our culture today so how do we defend against it? First, we know that God has revealed truth to us. He has given us general revelation (creation + conscience) and specific revelation (Christ and Scripture). God has specifically given us his message through utilizing human authors to create an exact record of God’s revelation. Because God has spoken through Scripture we must listen to it. It is the authority by which we will be held accountable so may we be quick to listen and obey it! Isn’t the Bible…Put Together by Random People? In Matthew 7:13-14 we study the two paths that all humans are on: the wide road or the narrow road. The wide road—characteristic of the non-christian life—is comfortable, easy, and filled with many people but leads to destruction. The narrow road—characteristic of the Christian life—is difficult, challenging, and filled with few but leads to life. Satan wants to do all he can to keep people on the wide road, but we must see the urgency to join the narrow road. The JH ministry seeks to point students to the narrow road, prepare students for the narrow road, and practice with students how to live on the narrow road.
