As a genre, creative nonfiction is often painted with a broad brush; consequently, its definition is pliable. Put succinctly, it is "true stories, well told"*; more expansively, it crosses a broad palette encompassing the realms of journalism, essay, history, memoir, autobiography, etc.--all with varying shades of creativity and nonfiction. It naturally implies the use of craft elements dispensed in factually accurate prose, the subject of which is "the real".
