The Converse Cowboy is a podcast dedicated to uncovering the mindset, psychology, and philosophy of high performers in the horse industry.
Clinton Anderson built an empire training horses — but in this clip, he reveals the real skill that made him rich: managing people, not animals. Nine years of therapy later, he's finally saying out loud what he was really thinking for two decades while smiling at customers and biting his tongue. In this episode, Clinton opens up about: 🔹 The "pool boy" era of his career — and why biting his tongue for 20 years nearly broke him 🔹 Why 80% of his customers are women, and what that taught him about who's actually willing to learn 🔹 The math behind Down Under Horsemanship: $40 from 10,000 people beats $200K from one — and why that's the real Walmart-vs-Mercedes lesson in business 🔹 Why he walked away from reining's "tribal, cutthroat" culture for the cow horse world — and what he found there instead 🔹 His theory on authenticity, dating, sales, and why trying to please everyone is the fastest way to fail 🔹 The most embarrassing 15 minutes of his career — 3,000 people about to walk through the door, and everything that could go wrong, did This is Clinton unfiltered — no polish, no PR, just three decades of hard-earned truth about horses, people, and building something real.

He grew up eating squirrel and rabbit, didn't taste his first steak until he was 22, and was once told that betting his future on horses was the dumbest thing he'd ever do. He went anyway. Today, Michael Cooper is an NCHA Hall of Famer, with more than six and a half million in lifetime earnings, and he's become one of the most respected cutting horse trainers in the industry.
But this conversation is about far more than the wins. It's about the mindset, the mentors, and the hard-earned principles that built a champion, a businessman, and a family man who never forgot where he came from.
He explains: Why your own adrenaline is the real reason you're losing, and how to slow it down when it matters most The single piece of advice that turned horse winnings into lasting wealth Why getting comfortable is the secret to winning at the highest level The brutal honesty with yourself that separates champions from everyone else *What true success actually looks like once the money stops mattering

What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't your circumstances—but the story you keep telling yourself?
In a unique role reversal, The Converse Cowboy steps into the guest seat, interviewed my none other that the Louis Vuitton Vaquero himself, to unpack the ideas behind his new book, "Perspective Is a Verb". Mike shares the personal experiences that shaped his philosophy—from navigating divorce and rebuilding his identity to studying psychology, performance, and the habits that create a meaningful life. Along the way, he reveals the daily practices that transformed his perspective, why gratitude is more powerful than most people realize, and how the thoughts you repeat today quietly shape the life you experience tomorrow.

The NCHA Super Stakes delivered unforgettable runs, breakout performances, and plenty of chaos inside the cowbox — I am joined by my good pal, 'The Louis Vuitton Vaquero' aka NCHA Hall of Famer, Jesse Lennox to break it all down.
From Kenny Platt's historic dominance in the 5/6 Open to Michael Cooper's clutch performances under pressure, this episode dives deep into the horses, the strategy, and the personalities shaping the future of cutting. Jesse gives a behind-the-scenes look at what really happens in the cowbox, how elite trainers read cattle, and why the next generation of riders like Cade Shepard, Colt Moore, Cooper Clark, and Ryan Rapp are changing the game. They also unpack the rise of Metallic Rey Mink offspring, the evolution of modern horse training, and the subtle details—like "watching a cow's nostril" — that separate great horsemen from everyone else.
Along the way, things go completely off the rails with harmonica stories, busking on the Granbury square, Backstreet Boys encounters, celebrity cuttings, and the ongoing rise of the legendary band "Low Expectations." This episode is equal parts cutting horse masterclass and locker room comedy—and one of the most entertaining recaps yet.

Aaron Watson turned down Nashville at 22 — and spent the next 25 years proving he was right.
In this deeply honest conversation, Aaron opens up about building one of country music's most successful independent careers without compromising his identity, his songwriting, or his family. He shares the real cost of chasing music for a living, surviving two vocal cord surgeries that nearly ended his career, and why becoming a father changed the way he measures success forever.
This episode goes far beyond country music. It's about resilience, reinvention, creative obsession, faith, and learning what actually matters after decades in the spotlight. Aaron talks candidly about grief, losing a daughter, turning down opportunities most artists would kill for, and the dangerous freedom that comes when you stop caring about fame.
We also dive into songwriting, social media, legacy, independent artistry, and the mindset that's fueling what he believes may become the best chapter of his career.
In this episode of The Converse Cowboy, NFL veteran Davon Godchaux breaks down the uncomfortable truth behind success, discipline, and identity — after 10 years in a league where most careers barely last three. "You've got athletes… and then you've got professional athletes." From LSU to the NFL, Davon shares the small, unglamorous habits that define longevity — the things no one sees, but everyone feels on game day. But this isn't just about football. It's about what happens when the dream becomes reality… and still isn't enough. We talk about: • Why the little things are everything (and why most people avoid them) • The danger of tying your identity to what you do • What success really looks like beyond money and fame • How to handle adversity in a world that teaches you to quit "Money comes and goes… but relationships last forever." Because when the game ends — for all of us — what's left is who you became along the way. This episode is brought to you by Kimes Ranch, Bluebonnet Feeds and Kerry Kelley Bits and Spurs. Most people don't accidentally find their calling. Scott Slusher did.
With no formal training, he borrowed a horse, a truck, and a saddle—and stepped into a world that would eventually define his life's work.
In this episode, we go beyond photography into purpose, identity, and the tension between making money and making a life. Scott shares why chasing fulfillment looks nothing like chasing success—and why uncertainty might be the clearest sign you're on the right path.
If you've ever questioned where you're headed, this conversation will stay with you.

Evan Felker of 'Turnpike Troubadours' has earned his reputation as one of the most respected songwriters in American music, but this conversation reveals what sits beneath the songs. Rather than focusing on highlights or history, this episode explores how great writing is built—through attention, discipline, and a deep respect for ordinary moments. Evan reflects on why the most lasting songs don't come from chasing significance, but from noticing what others overlook and shaping it with care.
Our discussion moves beyond songwriting into the larger work of living well. We discuss finding balance as a daily practice, intention as something that must be revisited constantly, and reflection as a discipline that keeps both the work and the person aligned. Whether describing his writing process, the value of being present, or why certain experiences quiet the noise of the world, his perspective is measured, thoughtful, and quietly compelling.
This episode isn't about image or mythology. It's about craft, clarity, and choosing a way of working—and living—that holds up over time. For anyone interested in meaningful work done with purpose, this is a conversation you don't want to miss.

Foundations of Greatness – Training Young Horses Roundtable with some of the best in the business. Dive deep into the world of starting cutting horse prospects with three of the industry's most respected horse trainers: Wes Ashlock (Abilene, TX), Richard Jordan (Idaho), Gregg Garvie (Canada). In this candid roundtable recorded live at the NCHA Futurity, Fort Worth, Texas, these unsung heroes of the cutting horse world pull back the curtain on the often-overlooked art of building foundations for future champions. From day-one colt starting and teaching horses to "reach for an answer," to sourcing yearlings, navigating sales pressure, and the emotional highs and lows of seeing "your" horse succeed under another trainer—these guys hold nothing back. With humor, humility, and hard-earned wisdom, they discuss:
wildly different training styles that all produce winners spotting "the freak" early (and knowing when greatness is already inside the horse) evolving beliefs, favorite failures, and the worst advice they've ignored the thrill (and terror) of million-dollar sales *why the best horses teach the trainer more than the other way around
Whether you're a trainer, breeder, owner, or just love great horses and real talk, this episode reminds us there's no single path to excellence—just relentless pursuit, gratitude, and a deep respect for the animal. Enjoy the show!

What happens when a breakout college breakaway roper can't turn pro and has to get a "big girl job"? She accidentally becomes one of the country's leading equine nutritionists. Dr. Jyme Nichols (Bluebonnet Feeds) pulls back the curtain on her unlikely journey from the Sandhills of Nebraska and Montana State rodeo to earning a PhD and revolutionizing performance horse feeding. In this myth-busting conversation with The Converse Cowboy, she explains why protein percentage is the LAST thing she looks at on a feed tag, how horses can get type-2 diabetes just like humans, why supplements aren't always the enemy (and when they definitely are), and the real reason 3-year-old futurity horses fall apart under stress. From leaky gut and the gut-brain axis to why forage testing is "insurance" and how plasma actually works, Dr. Jyme delivers science in plain English for every horse owner tired of fads and old wives' tales. Truly a pleasure to have singer songwriter, Kenny Feidler on the show.
Kenny Feidler’s sound is dark, gritty, western rock n roll filled with thoughtful, honest songwriting. Feidler’s path to the stage started on the rodeo circuit, writing songs about the life and selling his music from the trunk of an old Cadillac. Now he racks up the miles with his band, traveling from his home on the plains of Western South Dakota, to fill up bars and dance halls across America’s Heartland.
In 2024 Feidler has already shared the stage with Colter Wall, Josh Meloy, and Reckless Kelly. With multiple singles due to release this year and over 150 million streams in his career, it’s hard not to view this as a breakout moment for Feidler. However, Feidler is just grateful to make a living making music .
Be sure to check out his latest single, "Choking on the Wire". @kennyfeidler

Warning! This episode contains extremely foul language!
The 1st Amendment protects the freedom of speech here in the United States of America and Clinton Anderson fully exercises that right throughout this episode.
Clinton simply says out loud what most people are thinking and although he wraps those verbal thoughts in a blanket of curse words, there is a sense of authenticity that comes with them that you can't help but respect.
He pulls the curtain back on the Downunder Horsemanship Empire. Three and a half hours of unfiltered and raw conversation. We talk business, horses, marketing, successes, failures and lessons he's learned along the way.
Behind the profanity and foul language is a man that has mastered his craft as a clinician and horseman. Clinton Anderson has kept tens of thousands of people safe as they followed his method pursuing a journey with their horse and a better understanding of basic horsemanship.
Warning: last chance, if you click play then you're giving consent to have your hearing violated and your mind altered. I'm sorry and you're welcome... Enjoy the show!

Truly a pleasure to sit down with Montana singer songwriter, Riddy Arman. The chapters of her life so far make for a story much richer than a common western archetype. Unafraid to take new paths, Arman has traveled across the country — from the farmlands of the Midwest to the bustling streets of New York City — writing songs, working as a ranch hand, and practicing an Agrarian lifestyle. It was during her childhood, full of folk and country music, in rural Ohio that she was first drawn to the guitar. Her deep dive into songwriting didn’t happen until her early 20s when she. moved to central Virginia to resume her interest in horsemanship and agriculture on a friend’s small farm. Enjoy the show!!

Best known as the frontman of North Carolina alt-country outfit American Aquarium, singer/songwriter B.J. Barham has spent much of his career delivering rugged, earthy roots rock in the vein of Whiskeytown and Drive-By Truckers. A native of Reidsville, North Carolina, Barham formed the group in 2005 and, over the course of a decade, built American Aquarium's reputation from regional up-and-comers to acclaimed, internationally recognized act thanks to records like 2012's Jason Isbell-produced Burn. Flicker. Die. and 2015's Wolves. Inspired by the November 2015 terrorist attacks at a Parisian nightclub, Barham -- who was, at the time, on tour in nearby Belgium -- quickly wrote a new batch of acoustic-led songs that would eventually become Rockingham, his solo debut. In early 2016, with co-producer Bradley Cook, he and a handpicked crew of musicians recorded the new material in a couple of marathon sessions. The album was released later that year, earning positive reviews. Barham toured as a solo act as well, hitting all 48 states in the continental United States during the spring and summer of 2017. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi

I had the pleasure of sitting down with 3 gentlemen that played a role in creating the ‘cool to be a cowboy’ vibe.
🎬 Barry Corbin - Actor with roles in many of the greats, such as Lonesome Dove, Urban Cowboy, No Country For Old Men just to name a few.
🎬 Patrick Wayne - Actor appearing in 40 films, 11 of which are with his father John Wayne, 𝘉𝘪𝘨 𝘑𝘢𝘬𝘦, 𝘔𝘤𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘬, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘴 and more.
📖 Michael Grauer - Author of 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘥: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘏. 𝘋. 𝘉𝘶𝘨𝘣𝘦𝘦, and Curator of Cowboy Collections and Western Art at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum honors and memorializes the men and women who have through their exemplary lives, careers, and achievements embodied and perpetuated the heritage of the American West. Every inductee, whether a real cowboy in the Hall of Great Westerners, a “reel” cowboy in the Hall of Great Western Performers, or a rodeo cowboy in the Rodeo Hall of Fame, perpetuates and enriches facets of this Western heritage. By honoring them, the Museum, in a sense, provides a generational continuity with the past, present, and future and bears witness to an evolving American West.

Daniel Donato is a gift from the guitar gods. His #cosmiccountry journey began at the age of 14, busking on the streets of Nashville for 8+ hours a day. His ‘natural talent’ with a guitar was earned through consistent practice day after day for years, combining vision and action. This episode is a ‘guitar lesson’ turned ‘philosophical chat’ and an example of why I like to surround myself with people like Daniel Donato. I’ve had a handful of lessons with Daniel via zoom over the last 4ish months, so it was nice to finally meet in person for a lesson. Daniel Donato is wise beyond his years and his talents as a musician are the #realdeal. Hope you enjoy!! My team and I cruised down to Salado, Texas to visit with Randy Bloomer, owner of Bloomer Trailers. Before arriving, I was unaware of the caliber of human I was about to have the pleasure of sitting down with.
Randy is one of those people that will make you want to be your best just by being in the same room with him. He has a progressive mindset and a ‘make it happen now’ attitude along with next-level hospitality. I feel like Randy has found the perfect balance between having the confidence to pursue his dreams yet still being humble enough to know there is room for improvement; ways to make himself and Bloomer Trailers better. Hence the combination of the Bloomer motto, ‘Only The Best’ and the trailer name ‘The Evolution’- continuing to evolve.
It is very apparent that his focus has always been on ‘quality’ and continuing to produce #onlythebest; by spending more money on R&D than any other trailer manufacturer in the industry and by using only the best materials, he’s able to ensure the safest ride for horses and owners.
I can’t say enough good things about Randy Bloomer and my experience while at Bloomer Trailers; after meeting him and touring through the Bloomer shop, it is very clear to me why ‘Bloomer’ is the most well-known horse trailer going down the road today and in my opinion will continue to be the industry leader for years to come, setting the standard for other trailer manufacturers.
I feel like a better person for having crossed paths with Randy and I’m excited for you all to get a glimpse into his journey and the journey of Bloomer Trailers!

A.J. and his music got on my radar years ago while on a solo road trip, driving through the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, on a soul-searching journey trying to find my way out of a dark time. A friend sent me A.J.’s album ‘Expectations’, which I played on repeat for the remainder of my trip. At that time, I never thought I would one day be sitting in the same room with the guy that created the music that had such a powerful impact on me. A.J. stopped by Shaefer Outfitter Studios and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to pick his brain about his journey as a singer/songwriter and as a human overcoming the challenges of this game we call ‘Life’. He closed the show by playing one of my favorite songs, ‘Home’ from his album ‘Expectations’, along with a song from his new album, which will be released towards the end of July. t’s no secret that by surrounding yourself with the right people and the right environment; you can not only expedite your personal growth but also enhance your chances of reaching dreams you didn’t even know were possible. Grateful to have the pleasure of sitting with some of the best to ever climb on a bull. JW Hart, Ross Coleman, and Aaron Semas; all three recipients of the PBR Ring of Honor. Along with their good friend Kelly Barker; who brought an interesting perspective and insight being present throughout their bull riding journey. I’m not a bull rider and I know very little about the sport, however, it’s not necessary to understand what these guys were talking about during this interview. I could feel the intensity of their energy as they shared their mindset and swapped stories about performance and life. What I learned from our conversation yesterday is that a ‘winning mindset’ isn’t something that can necessarily be taught; only experienced, through repetition, overcoming failure, and consistent practice. And, by surrounding yourself with others that have a no-excuses mentality and a winning attitude will enhance your ability to adopt the same mentality I’m beyond grateful to share time with these elite athletes and to get a glimpse into how their mind operates. I’m glad to have crossed paths with Rick last year and I’m proud to call him a friend.
It was great to have him on the show and to hear his journey as an entrepreneur; from taking over Schaefer Outfitter in 2001, to what he’s doing with the company today, and the ups and downs along the way.
Rick’s razor-sharp business acumen, his focus on creating quality clothing, along with his passion for the Western lifestyle are some of the key components to his continued success along with the success of Schaefer Outfitter, in my opinion.
I’m excited to share this one with you all!

NCHA Hall of Famer, Tatum Rice stopped by Schaefer Outfitter Studios. I left this interview feeling inspired by his story/journey throughout his cutting horse career and excited to share it with you all. $3 Million LTE, 2018 Futurity Champion on 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘺 𝘡𝘦𝘦, 2018 World Champion on 𝘏𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘴 and 2018 Reserve Horse of the Year on 𝘏𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘴. As with anybody who gets to the top of their field, there are many ups and downs along the way. What I’ve learned throughout this week of interviews…we’re all human, no matter how much money or success one has, we all have a human mind that never stops running. Positive and negative thoughts come to all of us, but there is a consistent theme with the people that get to the top; they all have a very strong mental game. They focus on the positive and either dismiss the negative or reframe it to find the positive. Enjoy!
