Jason and his wife Temple react to and dismantle a viral video by ex-occultist-turned-Christian Jacque Marino, who appeared on Allie Beth Stuckey's show claiming shadow work is dangerous spiritual self-harm. Temple, a shadow-work practitioner, walks through the core misconceptions point by point—not to attack Marino, but because these critiques echo the 1980s Satanic Panic and reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of what shadow integration actually is. Shadow work, they explain, isn't about "becoming your shadow" or indulging destructive impulses; it's about consciously integrating the aspects of self that the ego rejects due to societal conditioning and shame. Discomfort and pain are signals—pointers to dysfunction, injury, or unprocessed trauma—and the practice is to remain curious rather than flee into substances or distraction. They trace shadow work's lineage through Jung's Red Book, William James, and modern somatic therapy, emphasizing the role of professional guidance and the scientific validation of approaches like CBT. The conversation pivots to analyzing the born-again experience itself as a psychological reframing—a subroutine that accomplishes real shifts in identification and self-narrative—and draws parallels to other "safe haven" movements, from Teal Swan to fundamentalist Christianity. They discuss monotheism's assumption that non-Christians embody evil, the fastest-growing religions in America, and the question of personal responsibility in how adults frame their childhood and past. Ultimately, this is about the return of radical fundamentalism—Christian and otherwise—and the cost of binary thinking in a complex world. Topics: What shadow work actually is and what it isn't | Integration vs. indulgence | Pain and discomfort as diagnostic signals | Jung's Red Book and the psychological lineage of shadow work | Somatic therapy and the role of professional guidance | The born-again experience as psychological reframing | Safe-haven movements and cultic dynamics | Monotheism and the demonization of the Other | The Satanic Panic returns | Personal responsibility and narrative reframing in adulthood | Fundamentalism across traditions. Private investigator and author Joseph Flatley joins Jason to discuss his new book on Timothy Leary's occult legacy. They cover Leary's Eight Circuit model of consciousness, its roots in his psychology work at Harvard and the psilocybin experiments that got him kicked out, and how Leary synthesized Freud, Jung, and Maslow into a single map of the human mind before expanding it into four "post-terrestrial" circuits dealing with cosmic consciousness, the Akashic records, and states traditionally accessed through magic and yoga. Flatley walks through how Leary mapped his 24-stage model onto the tarot major arcana (including two cards Leary invented: the Star Maker and the Velvet Hole), and how the system corresponds to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and the four worlds. They get into the Starseed Transmissions, where Leary and fellow inmate Wayne Benner performed Enochian-style workings in Folsom Prison while Robert Anton Wilson was simultaneously doing Holy Guardian Angel invocations in Chicago and receiving telepathic impressions of Leary's escape. The conversation turns to Leary's SMI2LE formula (Space Migration, Intelligence Increase, Life Extension), how it prefigured the Silicon Valley transhumanist movement, and the uncomfortable question of how "follow your bliss" collapsed into consumer culture. They assess the boomer occult legacy honestly, discuss Antero Alli's critique that practitioners ignored the lower four circuits, and consider whether the internet and always-on digital life might be the actual evolutionary shift Leary was pointing toward. Topics: The Eight Circuit model and its 24 sub-stages | Leary's tarot correspondences and the Tree of Life | The Starseed Transmissions and Enochian magic in Folsom Prison | SMI2LE and the tech industry | Boomer occultism: what to keep and what to leave behind | Robert Anton Wilson's Prometheus Rising | Info-psychology as a technical manual for consciousness | Leary's deathbed and Doug Rushkoff's account. Fresh from the archives, this is a talk on the Revival of Magick that I gave at the now-defunct Catland Books in Brooklyn, NY in 2014. The quality is so-so as it was filmed on a handheld digital camcorder, but I've done my best to clean up the sound and video. In the talk, I discuss how 3rd millennium magick radically differs from the magick of the 2nd millennium, and talk about Terence McKenna, shamanism, the Book of the Law and lots more.

Jason Louv interviews Barbara Mendes, a multifaceted artist known for her underground comics and contemporary art. Mendes, affectionately known by her pen name Willie Mendes, recounts her artistic journey that began in the 1960s, during a time when female artists often faced discrimination and marginalization. She reflects on the challenges that women artists experienced, noting that much of the comic book industry, as well as the fine arts, was dominated by men. Despite these obstacles, Mendes pursued her passion for painting, which she describes as her true love. Throughout the conversation, Mendes reveals her spiritual evolution, which has shifted from exploring Eastern philosophies and African spirituality to embracing Orthodox Judaism later in her life. She shares anecdotes about her family history rooted in rabbinical tradition and discusses her initial rejection of religious teachings as superstition. However, her spiritual quest led her back to her Jewish roots, guided by a longing for faith and connection. Mendes recounts how significant events, such as the influence of various books on mysticism and spirituality, shaped her understanding of Judaism and inspired her art. Mendes discusses her experiences studying Hebrew and Torah and how they deepened her artistic expression. Through her mural projects, she dove into biblical themes while utilizing vibrant colors and imaginative storytelling to convey her interpretations. Her relationship with the Orthodox community has been complex; while she embraces many rituals, she also grapples with the patriarchal aspects of the tradition that feel constraining at times. Mendes articulates how the dynamics of being a woman within the Orthodox framework can be challenging, but she finds empowerment and strength within her experiences. The interview takes a thought-provoking turn when they discuss the concept of divinity and gender. Mendes introduces her idea that the traditional male depiction of God does not account for the feminine aspect of divinity. She references the cultural shift from ancient matriarchal societies to patriarchal religions, suggesting that women have long been marginalized in religious narratives. Mendes proposes that a more balanced understanding of spirituality should involve recognizing the feminine face of divinity alongside the male. As they explore the intersections of art, spirituality, and societal changes, Mendes shares her vision for a future defined by gender equality and compassion. She highlights influential figures like Golda Meir, the former Prime Minister of Israel, whom she views as a powerful representation of women in leadership. Mendes envisions an ideal where women's contributions are celebrated as essential to societal progress rather than secondary to male leadership. Mendes also brings forth the topic of angels as symbols of guidance and support, drawing parallels between her artistic imagination and the reality of human relationships. The conversation culminates in Mendes’s belief that art is a tool for personal and societal transformation. She emphasizes that while her artistic inspirations are deeply personal, they reflect universal themes of hope, resilience, and the quest for understanding. The dialogue concludes on a celebratory note, with Mendes discussing her ongoing artistic endeavors, including her new paintings and her gallery in Los Angeles. She invites listeners to engage with her work, emphasizing her commitment to using art as a means of expressing her unique vision and fostering a deeper understanding of spirituality. Overall, the interview provides a rich tapestry of insights into Mendes’s life, exploring her journey as an artist, her spiritual explorations, and her perspectives on gender dynamics in both the art world and religious traditions.

In this episode of the Ultraculture podcast, Jason Louv welcomes back spiritual teacher and psychic healer George Lizos to discuss his latest book, Ancient Manifestation Secrets. George reveals how ancient Hermetic philosophies can enrich modern manifestation practices by examining the authentic teachings of antiquity, rather than contemporary New Age interpretations.

He provides a comprehensive definition of Hermeticism, emphasizing its blend of Greek and Egyptian traditions through the lens of Hermes Trismegistus. Exploring the often-misunderstood Kybalion, he shares insights on how cultural perspectives can shape our understanding of these ancient teachings.

George critiques modern manifestation concepts, advocating for a process grounded in one's life purpose, delineating five essential steps: raising vibration, clarifying desires, releasing limiting beliefs, nurturing energies, and taking inspired action. Personal anecdotes, including a transformative visit to Delphi, illustrate his journey and the emotional regulation practices he recommends for effective manifestation work. The conversation delves into the complexities of manifestation, touching on toxic positivity, the importance of gratitude, and the role of collective intentionality, while George highlights the significance of the Oracle of Delphi in modern practices of guidance rather than prophecy.

With practical tips for living a spiritually aligned life, the episode offers a wealth of insights that fuse mystical traditions with actionable guidance, affirming that every moment presents a chance to connect with ancient wisdom. This rich, layered dialogue not only challenges mainstream beliefs but also inspires listeners to embrace the profound interconnectedness of their desires and the universe, making it an enlightening must-listen for spiritual seekers.

In this episode, we sit down with esteemed author Richard Kaczynski and practicing occultist Lynn Mavius for a captivating discussion on their journeys through Thelema, magic, and the intricate history surrounding figures like Aleister Crowley, J.F.C. Fuller, and Victor Neuburg. Richard opens by delving into his extensive contributions to the Western esoteric tradition, highlighting his renowned biography Perdurabo, which offers a comprehensive account of Crowley’s life. He also shares insights from his latest work, Friendship and Doubt, a deep exploration of the intertwined relationships between Crowley, Fuller, and Neuburg, and how their agnosticism and free thought shaped their magical practices and personal philosophies.

Lynn complements Richard’s narrative by sharing her experiences as both a writer and a dedicated occultist. She discusses her active role within the local Pagan and Thelemic communities, where she teaches and engages with a broad spectrum of spiritual practices. As the conversation progresses, Richard and Lynn explore the idea of being a well-rounded magician, emphasizing the need to balance esoteric study with broader worldly pursuits. They reflect on their own practices, underscoring the importance of discernment, listening to one's inner voice, and the pursuit of one's true will.

The pair also dive into the dynamics of being a magical couple within Thelema. With candid anecdotes, they discuss how their shared spiritual practices strengthen their bond, while also stressing the importance of maintaining individual paths. The conversation then shifts to a timely topic: the influence of social media—especially TikTok—on the dissemination of esoteric knowledge. Both express concern over the rise of disinformation and the cultural shifts within modern spirituality. Lynn points out the increasing polarization within occult communities and the lack of nuance in contemporary discussions of esoteric authors and their works. Together, they call for a revival of the intellectual curiosity that once characterized earlier generations of practitioners, encouraging engagement with diverse viewpoints, even those that challenge one's own beliefs.

As the dialogue nears its conclusion, Richard shares exciting updates on his upcoming projects, including the audiobook release of Perdurabo, the critical edition of The Sword of Song, and his forthcoming book Mind Over Magic, which seeks to bridge the gap between psychic practices and psychological research. Lynn also promotes her latest initiatives, inviting listeners to join her online community and attend her lectures on modern occultism.

Together, Richard and Lynn offer a contemporary lens on Thelema, advocating for inclusivity, thoughtful engagement, and the reclamation of magical traditions in today’s society. Their conversation is not only thought-provoking but also a call to deeper understanding, challenging preconceived notions of what it means to be a practitioner in the modern world, while enriching our appreciation of Thelemic history.

In this extensive interview, Jason speaks with Charlie Larson, a teacher, writer, and a practicing pagan and witch, who delves into the themes of personal transformation and the role of deities in modern spirituality. Charlie opens up about their lifelong passion for writing, which has served as an outlet for self-expression through both his childhood struggles and adult experiences. Their journey in language began during a challenging childhood, leading to academic pursuits in linguistics and a career in teaching English as a second language. This foundation laid the groundwork for Charlie's recent project: a book focused on the deity Anubis. Charlie provides a robust overview of Anubis, the Egyptian god often associated with death but whose role encompasses greater complexities. Initially conceived as the god of the dead, Anubis's character evolved over time, especially with the rise of Osiris, leading to a nuanced view of his responsibilities, which include embalming and the weighing of hearts—a pivotal aspect of ancient Egyptian beliefs surrounding the afterlife. Charlie explores theories on Anubis's origins and discusses how these deities were intertwined with the cultural fabric of ancient Egypt, providing context to their relevance in modern spiritual practices. The conversation shifts to the intersection of mythology and personal experience. Charlie describes their unique perspective on Anubis as a guide for navigating personal struggles, particularly during periods of difficulty and transformation. They encourage listeners to view deities like Anubis not merely as ancient figures but as living entities that maintain relevance in contemporary spirituality. This perspective recognizes the ongoing evolution of religious practices and the importance of adapting ancient teachings to modern contexts. Jason highlights the recurring theme of death within both ancient Egyptian spirituality and contemporary society. He critiques American cultural attitudes towards death as taboo, contrasting them with other cultures that embrace a more open relationship with mortality, such as Dia de los Muertos in Mexico. In discussing these differences, Charlie notes a growing trend in the U.S. toward celebrating life rather than solely mourning death, a shift that coincides with a rekindled interest in the spiritual significance of deities like Anubis. As they explore the significance of personal rituals and practices with Anubis, Charlie emphasizes the importance of intention over traditional ceremonial trappings. They advocate for a heartfelt approach to connecting with deities, suggesting that conversations and meditative practices can serve as effective means of establishing relationships with these powerful figures. They also touch upon the dual role of pets, particularly dogs, in providing comfort and protection, drawing parallels between the instinctual bond many people share with their animals and the guiding nature attributed to Anubis. Throughout the interview, both Jason and Charlie reflect on the transformative power of personal adversity and the healing process, underscoring the complex interplay between experiences of loss and the search for meaning in the modern world. Charlie candidly shares their experiences with shadow work, framing it as a journey supported by their connection to Anubis—a relationship that offers comfort and perspective amid life's challenges. The discussion concludes with Charlie sharing insights on how to incorporate the lessons learned from these ancient deities into contemporary spiritual practices. They encourage listeners to explore their own unique connections and to view these relationships as an evolving, living practice rather than a rigid adherence to tradition. The conversation not only provides historical context but also serves as an invitation for individuals to explore their personal spirituality with openness and creativity. Charlie's upcoming book, set to release in early No

Daniel introduces the concept of crisis apparitions—intense experiences where individuals become aware of a loved one’s death at a distance, often just before it occurs. Drawing from his extensive research, Daniel discusses how these events manifest as sightings, voices, intuitions, or sensations of pain, revealing a deep emotional connection between the living and the deceased.

Together, Jason and Daniel delve into the psychological and cultural factors surrounding these experiences. They examine how family dynamics, societal norms, and belief systems influence the sharing and interpretation of crisis apparitions, especially in times of grief. Daniel shares personal stories and historical accounts that highlight the ubiquity of these phenomena, despite their lack of mainstream recognition, and invites listeners to consider their broader significance.

As the conversation deepens, Daniel critiques the typical scientific perspectives on crisis apparitions, challenging listeners to move beyond simple explanations. He and Jason explore how different cultures, such as those in Ireland and Iceland, have embraced supernatural experiences through folklore, maintaining a connection to the spiritual realm that offers comfort and insight into death.

This thought-provoking episode provides a compelling exploration of a rarely discussed but profound aspect of human experience. Tune in as Daniel shares his knowledge, personal stories, and the impact of his work, offering fresh perspectives on life, death, and the mysterious phenomena that bridge the two.

In this episode, we dive deep into the life and legacy of Jim Morrison, exploring his extraordinary connection to the Western esoteric tradition and how it shaped his artistic journey.

As we dissect the prevailing narratives surrounding Jim Morrison, we emphasize the need to view him through a lens that transcends Hollywood’s portrayals. Re-examining the common misconceptions about him reveals a man deeply rooted in intellectualism and spiritual inquiry. We discuss the concept of the "worm's eye view" versus the "bird's eye view," illustrating how a broader perspective can illuminate the complexities of Morrison’s character beyond the myths created by the music industry and film representations.

Central to our exploration is Morrison’s inherent role as a secret teacher, someone compelled to awaken others to higher realities. The conversation highlights Morrison’s spiritual struggles, particularly in the context of his upbringing and familial expectations, emphasizing how these conflicts fueled his artistic ambition. We juxtapose this with Morrison's inclination to challenge societal norms, drawing parallels to figures throughout history who sought to transcend their own limitations and awaken others.

Throughout our dialogue, we touch upon the powerful symbolism inherent in Morrison’s music and poetry, examining how his works serve as catalysts for awakening and self-discovery. His connection to artists like Nietzsche and Colin Wilson becomes apparent, illustrating a shared vision of consciousness expansion through art. The discussion also delves into Morrison’s experiences while living in Venice Beach, where his explorations led him to artistic freedom and an expanded understanding of existence.

Of course, we also reflect on Morrison’s untimely death at 27 and the unanswered questions surrounding it, questioning the potential paths he could have pursued had he lived longer. Here, we consider the broader implications of his legacy—what it means in today’s context of spiritual awakening amidst societal pressures. Ultimately, the episode encapsulates the timeless lessons from Jim Morrison’s life and work: the importance of seeking authentic self-expression, the courage to confront societal norms, and the ceaseless pursuit of spiritual truth in a world filled with distractions. Enjoy the show!

Richard Metzger is a television host, author, and the creative mind behind the provocative TV show Disinformation, which aired on Channel 4 in the UK. He was also my first boss out of college, when I worked for him as the books editor at the Disinformation Company; we later co-founded the website Dangerous Minds together with other friends. Richard was a formative mentor in my early career, and he and his co-founder Gary Baddeley were responsible for launching it by greenlighting my first book Generation Hex (at the tender age of 21!) in 2003.

Richard's latest project Magick Show is a documentary designed by occultists for occultists, and is currently Kickstarting. The project aims to explore the world of modern occultism through in-depth conversations with over 50 leading figures in the field, including authors, scholars, and practicing magicians.

Richard and I hadn't talked in about a decade, but had a really great (and very, very high) time catching up and talking about magick, Richard's new project, and the state of the world. You're very much going to enjoy this long overdue conversation.

Make sure to check out Magick Show on Kickstarter - only a few days remain!

Yes hello! In the latest episode of Ultraculture, join Jason Louv in conversation with Kris Spisak as she explores the folklore of the trickster, villain, and rescuer known as Baba Yaga in a new light. When darkness, fear, and instability inundate our daily lives, folktale figures like Baba Yaga speak to the dichotomy of our existence—the hope and the horror, the magic and the mundane. At once an old hag and an enchantress, a demon and wish granter, a feminist and nothing more than a fairytale, Baba Yaga is an endlessly complex folktale character. Becoming Baba Yaga provides an in-depth look at the Baba Yaga mythos and history through Slavic folklore. Filled with historical and cultural context, analyses, and the stories themselves that add depth to the conversation. A comprehensive resource for anyone hoping to learn more about this ambiguous character and how her multifaceted presence still ripples through the present day, Becoming Baba Yaga is as thoughtful as it is illuminating. Spisak explores Baba Yaga’s connection to nature as an Earth goddess and as an herbalist. She also delves into the Shadow Self and Baba Yaga’s aspect as a trickster and places her in a modern context as not merely a witch of the woods but also as an archetype and force for finding your own path. Becoming Baba Yaga shares how she is both a force for good as much as evil and a feminist before her time.

A dramatic reading by Jason Louv of the 1819 poem "The Fall of Hyperion—A Dream" by John Keats, set to music by Jason. Not uncommon for the 19th century, it is awash in occult and Hermetic symbolism.

The full text of the poem follows:

"The Fall of Hyperion—A Dream"

John Keats

CANTO I

Fanatics have their dreams, wherewith they weave A paradise for a sect; the savage too From forth the loftiest fashion of his sleep Guesses at Heaven; pity these have not Trac'd upon vellum or wild Indian leaf The shadows of melodious utterance. But bare of laurel they live, dream, and die; For Poesy alone can tell her dreams, With the fine spell of words alone can save Imagination from the sable charm And dumb enchantment. Who alive can say, 'Thou art no Poet may'st not tell thy dreams?' Since every man whose soul is not a clod Hath visions, and would speak, if he had loved And been well nurtured in his mother tongue. Whether the dream now purpos'd to rehearse Be poet's or fanatic's will be known When this warm scribe my hand is in the grave. Methought I stood where trees of every clime, Palm, myrtle, oak, and sycamore, and beech, With plantain, and spice blossoms, made a screen; In neighbourhood of fountains, by the noise Soft showering in my ears, and, by the touch Of scent, not far from roses. Turning round I saw an arbour with a drooping roof Of trellis vines, and bells, and larger blooms, Like floral censers swinging light in air; Before its wreathed doorway, on a mound Of moss, was spread a feast of summer fruits, Which, nearer seen, seem'd refuse of a meal By angel tasted or our Mother Eve; For empty shells were scattered on the grass, And grape stalks but half bare, and remnants more, Sweet smelling, whose pure kinds I could not know. Still was more plenty than the fabled horn Thrice emptied could pour forth, at banqueting For Proserpine return'd to her own fields, Where the white heifers low. And appetite More yearning than on earth I ever felt Growing within, I ate deliciously; And, after not long, thirsted, for thereby Stood a cool vessel of transparent juice Sipp'd by the wander'd bee, the which I took, And, pledging all the mortals of the world, And all the dead whose names are in our lips, Drank. That full draught is parent of my theme. No Asian poppy nor elixir fine Of the soon fading jealous Caliphat, No poison gender'd in close monkish cell To thin the scarlet conclave of old men, Could so have rapt unwilling life away. Among the fragrant husks and berries crush'd, Upon the grass I struggled hard against The domineering potion; but in vain: The cloudy swoon came on, and down I sunk Like a Silenus on an antique vase. How long I slumber'd 'tis a chance to guess. When sense of life return'd, I started up As if with wings; but the fair trees were gone, The mossy mound and arbour were no more: I look'd around upon the carved sides Of an old sanctuary with roof august, Builded so high, it seem'd that filmed clouds Might spread beneath, as o'er the stars of heaven; So old the place was, I remember'd none The like upon the earth: what I had seen Of grey cathedrals, buttress'd walls, rent towers, The superannuations of sunk realms, Or Nature's rocks toil'd hard in waves and winds, Seem'd but the faulture of decrepit things To that eternal domed monument. Upon the marble at my feet there lay Store of strange vessels and large draperies, Which needs had been of dyed asbestos wove, Or in that place the moth could not corrupt, So white the linen, so, in some, distinct Ran imageries from a sombre loom. All in a mingled heap confus'd there lay Robes, golden tongs, censer and chafing dish, Girdles, and chains, and holy jewelries. Turning from these with awe, once more I rais'd My eyes to fathom the space every way; The embossed roof, the silent massy range Of columns north and south, ending in mist Of nothing, then to eastward, where black gates Were shut against the sunrise evermore. Then to the west I look'd, and saw far off An image, huge of feature as a cloud, At level of whose feet an altar slept, To be approach'd on either side by steps, And marble balustrade, and patient travail To count with toil the innumerable degrees. Towards the altar sober paced I went, Repressing haste, as too unholy there; And, coming nearer, saw beside the shrine One minist'ring; and there arose a flame. When in mid May the sickening East wind Shifts sudden to the south, the small warm rain Melts out the frozen incense from all flowers, And fills the air with so much pleasant health That even the dying man forgets his shroud; Even so that lofty sacrificial fire, Sending forth Maian incense, spread around Forgetfulness of everything but bliss, And clouded all the altar with soft smoke, From whose white fragrant curtains thus I heard Language pronounc'd: 'If thou canst not ascend 'These steps, die on that marble where thou art. 'Thy flesh, near cousin to the common dust, 'Will parch for lack of nutriment thy bones 'Will wither in few years, and vanish so 'That not the quickest eye could find a grain 'Of what thou now art on that pavement cold. 'The sands of thy short life are spent this hour, 'And no hand in the universe can turn 'Thy hourglass, if these gummed leaves be burnt 'Ere thou canst mount up these immortal steps.' I heard, I look'd: two senses both at once, So fine, so subtle, felt the tyranny Of that fierce threat and the hard task proposed. Prodigious seem'd the toil, the leaves were yet Burning when suddenly a palsied chill Struck from the paved level up my limbs, And was ascending quick to put cold grasp Upon those streams that pulse beside the throat: I shriek'd; and the sharp anguish of my shriek Stung my own ears I strove hard to escape The numbness; strove to gain the lowest step. Slow, heavy, deadly was my pace: the cold Grew stifling, suffocating, at the heart; And when I clasp'd my hands I felt them not. One minute before death, my iced foot touch'd The lowest stair; and as it touch'd, life seem'd To pour in at the toes: I mounted up, As once fair angels on a ladder flew From the green turf to Heaven. 'Holy Power,' Cried I, approaching near the horned shrine, 'What am I that should so be saved from death? 'What am I that another death come not 'To choke my utterance sacrilegious here?' Then said the veiled shadow 'Thou hast felt 'What 'tis to die and live again before 'Thy fated hour. That thou hadst power to do so 'Is thy own safety; thou hast dated on 'Thy doom.' 'High Prophetess,' said I, 'purge off, 'Benign, if so it please thee, my mind's film.' 'None can usurp this height,' return'd that shade, 'But those to whom the miseries of the world 'Are misery, and will not let them rest. 'All else who find a haven in the world, 'Where they may thoughtless sleep away their days, 'If by a chance into this fane they come, 'Rot on the pavement where thou rottedst half.' 'Are there not thousands in the world,' said I, Encourag'd by the sooth voice of the shade, 'Who love their fellows even to the death; 'Who feel the giant agony of the world; 'And more, like slaves to poor humanity, 'Labour for mortal good? I sure should see 'Other men here; but I am here alone.' 'Those whom thou spak'st of are no vision'ries,' Rejoin'd that voice; 'they are no dreamers weak; 'They seek no wonder but the human face, 'No music but a happy noted voice; 'They come not here, they have no thought to come; 'And thou art here, for thou art less than they: 'What benefit canst thou do, or all thy tribe, 'To the great world? Thou art a dreaming thing, 'A fever of thyself think of the Earth; 'What bliss even in hope is there for thee? 'What haven? every creature hath its home; 'Every sole man hath days of joy and pain, 'Whether his labours be sublime or low 'The pain alone; the joy alone; distinct: 'Only the dreamer venoms all his days, 'Bearing more woe than all his sins deserve. 'Therefore, that happiness be somewhat shar'd, 'Such things as thou art are admitted oft 'Into like gardens thou didst pass erewhile, 'And suffer'd in these temples: for that cause 'Thou standest safe beneath this statue's knees.' 'That I am favour'd for unworthiness, 'By such propitious parley medicin'd 'In sickness not ignoble, I rejoice, 'Aye, and could weep for love of such award.' So answer'd I, continuing, 'If it please, 'Majestic shadow, tell me: sure not all 'Those melodies sung into the world's ear 'Are useless: sure a poet is a sage; 'A humanist, physician to all men. 'That I am none I feel, as vultures feel 'They are no birds when eagles are abroad. 'What am I then? Thou spakest of my tribe: 'What tribe?' The tall shade veil'd in drooping white Then spake, so much more earnest, that the breath Moved the thin linen folds that drooping hung About a golden censer from the hand Pendent. 'Art thou not of the dreamer tribe? 'The poet and the dreamer are distinct, 'Diverse, sheer opposite, antipodes. 'The one pours out a balm upon the world, 'The other vexes it.' Then shouted I Spite of myself, and with a Pythia's spleen, 'Apollo! faded! O far flown Apollo! 'Where is thy misty pestilence to creep 'Into the dwellings, through the door crannies 'Of all mock lyrists, large self worshipers, 'And careless Hectorers in proud bad verse. 'Though I breathe death with them it will be life 'To see them sprawl before me into graves. 'Majestic shadow, tell me where I am, 'Whose altar this; for whom this incense curls; 'What image this whose face I cannot see, 'For the broad marble knees; and who thou art, 'Of accent feminine so courteous?' Then the tall shade, in drooping linens veil'd, Spoke out, so much more earnest, that her breath Stirr'd the thin folds of gauze that drooping hung About a golden censer from her hand Pendent; and by her voice I knew she shed Long treasured tears. 'This temple, sad and lone, 'Is all spar'd from the thunder of a war 'Foughten long since by giant hierarchy 'Against rebellion: this old image here, 'Whose carved features wrinkled as he fell, 'Is Saturn's; I Moneta, left supreme 'Sole priestess of this desolation.' I had no words to answer, for my tongue, Useless, could find about its roofed home No syllable of a fit majesty To make rejoinder to Moneta's mourn. There was a silence, while the altar's blaze Was fainting for sweet food: I look'd thereon, And on the paved floor, where nigh were piled Faggots of cinnamon, and many heaps Of other crisped spice wood then again I look'd upon the altar, and its horns Whiten'd with ashes, and its lang'rous flame, And then upon the offerings again; And so by turns till sad Moneta cried, 'The sacrifice is done, but not the less 'Will I be kind to thee for thy good will. 'My power, which to me is still a curse, 'Shall be to thee a wonder; for the scenes 'Still swooning vivid through my globed brain 'With an electral changing misery 'Thou shalt with those dull mortal eyes behold, 'Free from all pain, if wonder pain thee not.' As near as an immortal's sphered words Could to a mother's soften, were these last: And yet I had a terror of her robes, And chiefly of the veils, that from her brow Hung pale, and curtain'd her in mysteries That made my heart too small to hold its blood. This saw that Goddess, and with sacred hand Parted the veils. Then saw I a wan face, Not pin'd by human sorrows, but bright blanch'd By an immortal sickness which kills not; It works a constant change, which happy death Can put no end to; deathwards progressing To no death was that visage; it had pass'd The lily and the snow; and beyond these I must not think now, though I saw that face But for her eyes I should have fled away. They held me back, with a benignant light Soft mitigated by divinest lids Half closed, and visionless entire they seem'd Of all external things; they saw me not, But in blank splendour beam'd like the mild moon, Who comforts those she sees not, who knows not What eyes are upward cast. As I had found A grain of gold upon a mountain side, And twing'd with avarice strain'd out my eyes To search its sullen entrails rich with ore, So at the view of sad Moneta's brow I ach'd to see what things the hollow brain Behind enwombed: what high tragedy In the dark secret chambers of her skull Was acting, that could give so dread a stress To her cold lips, and fill with such a light Her planetary eyes, and touch her voice With such a sorrow 'Shade of Memory!' Cried I, with act adorant at her feet, 'By all the gloom hung round thy fallen house, 'By this last temple, by the golden age, 'By great Apollo, thy dear Foster Child, 'And by thyself, forlorn divinity, 'The pale Omega of a withered race, 'Let me behold, according as thou saidst, 'What in thy brain so ferments to and fro!' No sooner had this conjuration pass'd My devout lips, than side by side we stood (Like a stunt bramble by a solemn pine) Deep in the shady sadness of a vale, Far sunken from the healthy breath of morn, Far from the fiery noon and eve's one star. Onward I look'd beneath the gloomy boughs, And saw, what first I thought an image huge, Like to the image pedestal'd so high In Saturn's temple. Then Moneta's voice Came brief upon mine ear 'So Saturn sat When he had lost his realms ' whereon there grew A power within me of enormous ken To see as a god sees, and take the depth Of things as nimbly as the outward eye Can size and shape pervade. The lofty theme At those few words hung vast before my mind, With half unravel'd web. I set myself Upon an eagle's watch, that I might see, And seeing ne'er forget. No stir of life Was in this shrouded vale, not so much air As in the zoning of a summer's day Robs not one light seed from the feather'd grass, But where the dead leaf fell there did it rest. A stream went voiceless by, still deaden'd more By reason of the fallen divinity Spreading more shade; the Naiad 'mid her reeds Press'd her cold finger closer to her lips. Along the margin sand large footmarks went No farther than to where old Saturn's feet Had rested, and there slept, how long a sleep! Degraded, cold, upon the sodden ground His old right hand lay nerveless, listless, dead, Unsceptred; and his realmless eyes were clos'd, While his bow'd head seem'd listening to the Earth, His ancient mother, for some comfort yet. It seem'd no force could wake him from his place; But there came one who with a kindred hand Touch'd his wide shoulders after bending low With reverence, though to one who knew it not. Then came the griev'd voice of Mnemosyne, And griev'd I hearken'd. 'That divinity 'Whom thou saw'st step from yon forlornest wood, 'And with slow pace approach our fallen King, 'Is Thea, softest natur'd of our brood.' I mark'd the Goddess in fair statuary Surpassing wan Moneta by the head, And in her sorrow nearer woman's tears. There was a listening fear in her regard, As if calamity had but begun; As if the vanward clouds of evil days Had spent their malice, and the sullen rear Was with its stored thunder labouring up. One hand she press'd upon that aching spot Where beats the human heart, as if just there, Though an immortal, she felt cruel pain; The other upon Saturn's bended neck She laid, and to the level of his hollow ear Leaning with parted lips, some words she spake In solemn tenor and deep organ tune; Some mourning words, which in our feeble tongue Would come in this like accenting; how frail To that large utterance of the early Gods! 'Saturn! look up and for what, poor lost King? 'I have no comfort for thee; no not one; 'I cannot cry, Wherefore thus sleepest thou? 'For Heaven is parted from thee, and the Earth 'Knows thee not, so afflicted, for a God; 'And Ocean too, with all its solemn noise, 'Has from thy sceptre pass'd, and all the air 'Is emptied of thine hoary majesty: 'Thy thunder, captious at the new command, 'Rumbles reluctant o'er our fallen house; 'And thy sharp lightning, in unpracticed hands, 'Scorches and burns our once serene domain. 'With such remorseless speed still come new woes, 'That unbelief has not a space to breathe. 'Saturn! sleep on: Me thoughtless, why should I 'Thus violate thy slumbrous solitude? 'Why should I ope thy melancholy eyes? 'Saturn, sleep on, while at thy feet I weep.' As when upon a tranced summer night Forests, branch charmed by the earnest stars, Dream, and so dream all night without a noise, Save from one gradual solitary gust, Swelling upon the silence; dying off; As if the ebbing air had but one wave; So came these words, and went; the while in tears She press'd her fair large forehead to the earth, Just where her fallen hair might spread in curls A soft and silken mat for Saturn's feet. Long, long those two were postured motionless, Like sculpture builded up upon the grave Of their own power. A long awful time I look'd upon them: still they were the same; The frozen God still bending to the earth, And the sad Goddess weeping at his feet, Moneta silent. Without stay or prop But my own weak mortality, I bore The load of this eternal quietude, The unchanging gloom, and the three fixed shapes Ponderous upon my senses, a whole moon. For by my burning brain I measured sure Her silver seasons shedded on the night, And ever day by day methought I grew More gaunt and ghostly. Oftentimes I pray'd Intense, that Death would take me from the vale And all its burthens gasping with despair Of change, hour after hour I curs'd myself; Until old Saturn rais'd his faded eyes, And look'd around and saw his kingdom gone, And all the gloom and sorrow of the place, And that fair kneeling Goddess at his feet. As the moist scent of flowers, and grass, and leaves Fills forest dells with a pervading air, Known to the woodland nostril, so the words Of Saturn fill'd the mossy glooms around, Even to the hollows of time eaten oaks And to the windings of the foxes' hole, With sad low tones, while thus he spake, and sent Strange musings to the solitary Pan. 'Moan, brethren, moan; for we are swallow'd up 'And buried from all Godlike exercise 'Of influence benign on planets pale, 'And peaceful sway above man's harvesting, 'And all those acts which Deity supreme 'Doth ease its heart of love in. Moan and wail, 'Moan, brethren, moan; for lo, the rebel spheres 'Spin round, the stars their ancient courses keep, 'Clouds still with shadowy moisture haunt the earth, 'Still suck their fill of light from sun and moon, 'Still buds the tree, and still the sea shores murmur; 'There is no death in all the Universe, 'No smell of death there shall be death Moan, moan, 'Moan, Cybele, moan; for thy pernicious babes 'Have changed a God into a shaking Palsy. 'Moan, brethren, moan, for I have no strength left, 'Weak as the reed weak feeble as my voice 'O, O, the pain, the pain of feebleness. 'Moan, moan, for still I thaw or give me help; 'Throw down those imps, and give me victory. 'Let me hear other groans, and trumpets blown 'Of triumph calm, and hymns of festival 'From the gold peaks of Heaven's high piled clouds; 'Voices of soft proclaim, and silver stir 'Of strings in hollow shells; and let there be 'Beautiful things made new, for the surprise 'Of the sky children.' So he feebly ceas'd, With such a poor and sickly sounding pause, Methought I heard some old man of the earth Bewailing earthly loss; nor could my eyes And ears act with that pleasant unison of sense Which marries sweet sound with the grace of form, And dolorous accent from a tragic harp With large limb'd visions. More I scrutinized: Still fix'd he sat beneath the sable trees, Whose arms spread straggling in wild serpent forms, With leaves all hush'd; his awful presence there (Now all was silent) gave a deadly lie To what I erewhile heard only his lips Trembled amid the white curls of his beard. They told the truth, though, round, the snowy locks Hung nobly, as upon the face of heaven A mid day fleece of clouds. Thea arose, And stretched her white arm through the hollow dark, Pointing some whither: whereat he too rose Like a vast giant, seen by men at sea To grow pale from the waves at dull midnight. They melted from my sight into the woods; Ere I could turn, Moneta cried, 'These twain 'Are speeding to the families of grief, 'Where roof'd in by black rocks they waste, in pain 'And darkness, for no hope.' And she spake on, As ye may read who can unwearied pass Onward from the antechamber of this dream, Where even at the open doors awhile I must delay, and glean my memory Of her high phrase: perhaps no further dare. CANTO II 'Mortal, that thou may'st understand aright, 'I humanize my sayings to thine ear, 'Making comparisons of earthly things; 'Or thou might'st better listen to the wind, 'Whose language is to thee a barren noise, 'Though it blows legend laden through the trees. 'In melancholy realms big tears are shed, 'More sorrow like to this, and such like woe, 'Too huge for mortal tongue, or pen of scribe. 'The Titans fierce, self hid or prison bound, 'Groan for the old allegiance once more, 'Listening in their doom for Saturn's voice. 'But one of our whole eagle brood still keeps 'His sov'reignty, and rule, and majesty; 'Blazing Hyperion on his orbed fire 'Still sits, still snuffs the incense teeming up 'From man to the sun's God: yet unsecure, 'For as upon the earth dire prodigies 'Fright and perplex, so also shudders he: 'Nor at dog's howl or gloom bird's Even screech, 'Or the familiar visitings of one 'Upon the first toll of his passing bell: 'But horrors, portioned to a giant nerve, 'Make great Hyperion ache. His palace bright, 'Bastion'd with pyramids of glowing gold, 'And touch'd with shade of bronzed obelisks, 'Glares a blood red through all the thousand courts, 'Arches, and domes, and fiery galleries: 'And all its curtains of Aurorian clouds 'Flush angerly; when he would taste the wreaths 'Of incense breath'd aloft from sacred hills, 'Instead of sweets his ample palate takes 'Savour of poisonous brass and metals sick. 'Wherefore when harbour'd in the sleepy West, 'After the full completion of fair day, 'For rest divine upon exalted couch 'And slumber in the arms of melody, 'He paces through the pleasant hours of ease 'With strides colossal, on from hall to hall; 'While far within each aisle and deep recess 'His winged minions in close clusters stand 'Amaz'd, and full of fear; like anxious men, 'Who on a wide plain gather in sad troops, 'When earthquakes jar their battlements and towers. 'Even now, while Saturn, roused from icy trance, 'Goes step for step with Thea from yon woods, 'Hyperion, leaving twilight in the rear, 'Is sloping to the threshold of the West. 'Thither we tend.' Now in clear light I stood, Reliev'd from the dusk vale. Mnemosyne Was sitting on a square edg'd polish'd stone, That in its lucid depth reflected pure Her priestess garments. My quick eyes ran on From stately nave to nave, from vault to vault, Through bow'rs of fragrant and enwreathed light And diamond paved lustrous long arcades. Anon rush'd by the bright Hyperion; His flaming robes stream'd out beyond his heels, And gave a roar, as if of earthly fire, That scared away the meek ethereal hours And made their dove wings tremble. On he flared. THE END 1819

In this episode of the Ultraculture podcast, Jason Louv is joined by P. D. Newman, an expert in the fields of alchemy, Hermeticism, and theurgy, with over two decades of immersion in these esoteric traditions. Newman shares insights from his latest work, a profound exploration into the ancient practice of theurgy, tracing its origins beyond the commonly acknowledged timeframe back to the era of Homer. He highlights how theurgy, a magical practice aimed at divinizing the soul for mystical union with the divine, shares roots with shamanic soul flight practices and was articulated in the epic meter of Homeric Greek.

Newman delves into the theurgic themes present in the Odyssey and the Iliad, such as Odysseus's journey to Hades and the funeral pyre of Patroclus, showcasing the interconnectedness of Greek shamanic practices and theurgical rites. He also discusses the significant contributions of Neoplatonists like Porphyry and Proclus, who described theurgy using Homeric terms and linked it to broader philosophical and ritual contexts.

Through a detailed analysis of telestikē, the theurgic technique of statue animation, and the divinization of the soul, Newman illustrates the ancient and complex nature of these practices, connecting them to Egyptian and Greek traditions. His study not only sheds light on the philosophical underpinnings of theurgy but also provides a rare glimpse into the actual ritual practices of ancient theurgists.

This is an EXCELLENT and very unexpected show that goes on some very, very, very interesting tangents. You're going to love it.

Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (born Neil Andrew Megson; 22 February 1950 – 14 March 2020) was an English singer-songwriter, musician, poet, performance artist, visual artist, and occultist who rose to notoriety as the founder of the COUM Transmissions artistic collective and lead vocalist of seminal industrial band Throbbing Gristle. They were also a founding member of Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth occult group, and fronted the experimental pop rock band Psychic TV.

Genesis was my mentor in magick and life for over seven intensive years. This conversation was the last I had with her, while she was in hospital with leukemia before her death. I released it on the podcast shortly after recording it, but since it was recorded on an iPhone with no external mic, the audio was very hard to hear in parts. This remastered version restores the conversation and give it the proper treatment it deserves.

Please enjoy this very, very special episode.

In this episode, we're talking about the Ars Notoria, a 13th-century Latin textbook of magic (now retroactively called a grimoire) from Northern Italy, which claims to grant its solitary practitioner an enhancement of his or her mental faculties (i.e., memory, eloquence, and intelligence), spiritual faculties for communicating with angels, and the acquisition of earthly and heavenly knowledge through ritual magic.

The magical ritual that it describes expresses both religious orthodoxy and esoteric elements which captivated young boys, university students, and clerics for its promise of a fast-track to gaining knowledge rapidly. This textbook of magic has a complicated history, both mythical and historical.

In this episode, Matthias Castle (who has just completed a new Latin translation of the book) discusses the weird and wonderful magic that the Ars Notoria has to offer.

In this episode, we speak to author John Sandbach, who illuminates the Tarot as a portal to realms of wisdom. It not only can provide deep insight through traditional readings but also offers a hands-on way to learn multiple spiritual practices and metaphysical systems, each interrelated through numbers and the ways the systems are worked with to reveal cosmic truths. Sandbach explores the deep interconnected meanings of each of the 78 cards of the Tarot and explains how to work with the cards for spiritual healing and growth as well as to synergistically learn other methods of spiritual insight, in particular numerology and astrology. Connecting the traditional, symbolic, psychological, alchemical, astrological, and numerological meanings of each card to its deepest meaning, the one closest to its spiritual core, he shows how exploring the interconnected meanings of the cards allows you to understand the Tarot as an integrated whole and enables you to provide insightful and deeply intuitive readings. He explains how every card is connected to the Tree of Life, an ancient Kabbalistic diagram of the universe, and details how to use the Tarot to calculate the numerological value of names, words, and dates, including birthdays, to reveal their metaphysical significance. He explores the connections between alternative rulerships for the cards and how they allow you to understand astrology at a deeper level. He also demonstrates several types of card layouts that can be used to perform readings for yourself or others, and he provides instructions for Tarot Contemplations to access deeper meanings of the cards. By journeying through the nexus of wisdom connections within each card, you not only are simultaneously learning the ancient wisdom of numerology and astrology, but also opening access to your own inner wisdom. In this episode of the Ultraculture podcast, Jason Louv welcomes esteemed author and scholar Edward Bruce Bynum, Ph.D. Dr. Bynum discusses his groundbreaking book Our African Unconscious, which focuses on the spiritual and psychological origins of humanity in Africa. He explores the concept of the Oldawan, or the Ancient Soul of Africa, and its connection to what modern psychologists define as the collective unconscious.

Dr. Bynum takes an interdisciplinary approach, integrating archaeology, DNA research, history, and depth psychology to trace the roots of religion and science back to Africa. He emphasizes the significance of Africa in the evolution of civilization, arts, sciences, and philosophy, highlighting how the fossil record confirms humanity's origins on this continent.

A key aspect of the conversation is the notion of a primordial African unconscious shared by all modern humans, regardless of ethnic or racial categorizations. This shared identity is both psychic and genetic, deeply rooted in our African ancestry. Dr. Bynum also discusses how this African unconscious is reflected in contemporary times, particularly in the Americas, and in modern psychospirituality.

The episode covers the beginnings of early religions and mysticism in Africa, the influence of Egyptian Nubian culture in the rise of civilization, and the spiritual implications of our shared African heritage. Dr. Bynum's insights offer a profound understanding of our shared heritage and identity, encouraging listeners to recognize the deep connections that bind us all.

In conclusion, Dr. Bynum's discussion urges us to embrace our collective past and understand its influence on our present and future. Enjoy the show!!

In this episode, Jason gives a dramatic reading of the Diamond Sutra.

The Diamond Sutra, a Mahāyāna Buddhist text, is notable for its influence on East Asian Buddhism, especially within the Chan or Zen tradition. Translated across a wide geographic range, it's revered for its teachings on "perfection of wisdom." Historically significant, it's recognized as one of the earliest dated printed books, with its discovery tracing back to 868 AD; it was also the first book ever released with complete open rights, allowing it to be shared, distributed or copied by anyone. The text's cultural impact is mirrored in a rich tradition of commentary and veneration within East Asian Buddhist cultures, embodying a legacy of religious thought and practice that continues to resonate across the globe.

The sutra's title metaphorically relates to the Vajra, a powerful weapon, symbolizing wisdom that cuts through illusions to attain ultimate reality. The text's essence, promoting a deeper understanding of reality through wisdom, along with its historical value as an early example of printed literature, highlights its enduring relevance and esteemed position within the Buddhist tradition and world religion.

The Diamond Sutra had fostered a rich cultural milieu of artwork, veneration, and over 80 commentaries by the end of China's Tang dynasty, indicating a vibrant intellectual engagement with the text. Its teachings continue to inspire Buddhist practitioners and scholars, affirming its timeless value in exploring profound religious and philosophical themes.

The recording at the opening of the show is of monks chanting at the Buddhist stupa Swayambhunath in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Paul Levy, author of "Undreaming Wetiko: Breaking the Spell of the Nightmare Mind-Virus," joins us in a profound conversation that delves into the depths of the human psyche and the insidious mind-virus known as "wetiko." A concept deeply rooted in Native American thought, wetiko represents a collective psychosis that is wreaking havoc on our world. Yet, as Levy passionately explains, within this very madness lies the key to our healing.

In this enlightening episode, Levy explores the intricate connections between wetiko and ancestral trauma, revealing how the wounded healer/shaman archetype can be a catalyst for both individual and collective healing. We journey into the heart of multigenerational pain, understanding how it propagates through families and how recognizing the wounded healer within us can guide us through the dark underworld of the unconscious.

Levy introduces us to the inner guide—a daemon/angel that resides within us, acting as an ally in our encounters with the daemonic energy of wetiko. We discuss the cultivation of "symbolic awareness," interpreting life events as symbols, akin to dreams, and how this awareness can transmute the poison of wetiko into medicine for the soul.

Drawing inspiration from the works of C.G. Jung, Rudolf Steiner, Henry Corbin, Wilhelm Reich, and Nicolas Berdyaev, Levy's insights offer a transformative perspective on the current global crisis. He emphasizes that the ultimate antidote to wetiko is to connect with the light of our true nature and embrace our authentic selves.

Join us in this compelling conversation that unravels the mysteries of wetiko and offers a path towards healing, self-discovery, and a deeper understanding of the human condition. In this episode of Ultraculture, we sit down with journalist Ika Johannesson to talk about he book BLOOD FIRE DEATH, on the history of Swedish Metal. From the book:

"In the early 1990s, Swedish musicians revolutionized the international music scene with their groundbreaking interpretations of what Metal music could be. Suddenly, the mild-mannered Scandinavian country found itself at the forefront of a new movement with worldwide impact thanks to bands such as Entombed, Dismember, and At the Gates. The birth of black metal drove the culture to even greater extremes, featuring a rawer, darker sound and non-ironic death-worship. Soon churches in both Norway and Sweden were aflame, and before long Satanism emerged as more than just an image.

"But how did it all start? Why did Sweden become a hotbed for such aggressive, nihilistic music? And who are the people and bands that brought it all about? Blood, Fire, Death: A Swedish Metal Story recounts the evolution of the genre from the massive amplifier walls of 1970s rock, through the church-burning Satanic 1990s, to the diverse and paradoxical manifestations of the scene today. This book focuses on the phenomena that have propelled the scene forward in an evolution that has not only been musical, but aesthetic and ideological as well. This book is a story about grotesque logos and icons that invoke death and darkness, but also a story of dedication, friendship, community, and profound love for music.

"Author Ika Johannesson says, 'This is not the definitive history of Swedish metal. Instead, we’ve focused on bands, individuals, and phenomena which to various extents have propelled the scene forward.'"

Michael Lee Nirenberg, author of the book "Earth A.D. The Poisoning of The American Landscape and the Communities that Fought Back," stops by to talk about his book. From the description: "A sweeping oral history of two American Superfund sites. Comprised of hundreds of interviews with political, environmental, corporate leaders as well as the citizens affected by living in these toxic zones, Nirenberg tells the stories behind the Tar Creek lead mine wasteland in rural Oklahoma compared and contrasted with the history of chemical poisoning of Newtown Creek in the now real-estate hotspot, Brooklyn, NY. The sagas of Tar Creek and Newtown show how wealth, racism, and the rural-urban divide influences how environmental disasters are viewed. The diverse voices are woven into a quick-paced modern-day thriller drawn from firsthand interviews with the people who both witnessed and participated in what became some of the most expensive man-made environmental disasters. Everyone from governors to scientists to fishermen to teachers to kids tells their stories of Earth after disaster in this riveting true story. Earth A.D. is a documentation of the past and a warning to the future." A good time is had by all!

In this mind-expanding episode of ULTRACULTURE WITH JASON LOUV, we dive into the fascinating intersection of Buddhism and psychedelics with Lama Mike Crowley, author of the groundbreaking book on psychedelic Buddhism. Join us as we explore how these two seemingly disparate paths can enrich and enhance each other, leading to profound spiritual experiences and deeper understanding of the self and the universe.

Lama Mike shares his insights on incorporating psychedelics into Buddhist practice, detailing how substances like LSD and psilocybin mushrooms can lead to spontaneous awakening experiences once thought to be exclusive to advanced meditators. We discuss the use of psychedelics encoded in Vedic and Buddhist scriptures, particularly in the Vajrayāna tradition, tracing their role in spiritual exploration from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Together, we delve into the key beliefs of Buddhism, the life of the Buddha, and the practices followed in various yānas or paths. Lama Mike offers guidance on meditation techniques, emphasizing the importance of cultivating the Four Positive Attitudes: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. We also explore Buddhist symbols, ceremonies, deities, and initiations, as well as the role of psychic powers in the Buddhist tradition.

Whether you're a Buddhist looking to integrate psychedelics into your practice or a psychonaut curious about the maps of inner space provided by Buddhism, this episode is an enlightening journey into uncharted territories of consciousness. Discover how ancient Buddhist wisdom can guide your psychedelic experiences, helping you navigate the vast realms of inner space and unlock the secrets of the universe.

A great conversation about cults, magick, hypnosis, cognitive biases and lots more. He has spent the last three decades weaving together his belief system, a tapestry of Eastern spirituality, Born Again Christianity, and New Age doggerel. In a compound near the Mexican border, his disciples tend the garden, take classes, and serve their guru while they wait for the end of the world. Joseph L. Flatley is a journalist who has spent years investigating Gabriel and his cult, the Global Community Communications Alliance. In this episode, the legendary Ramsey Dukes returns to talk about chaos magick, the Aeon of Horus, his Guru alter-ego "Baba Rebok," and lots more!

From his Thelemapedia bio:

Lionel Snell was born in England in 1945 and brought up in the ‘arts and crafts’ milieu of the Gloucestershire countryside but won scholarships and County financial backing for formal education at Clifton College, Bristol, and Emmanuel College, Cambridge (1964-68), where he officially studied pure mathematics but also studied the works of Aleister Crowley in the university library and held his first “ritual happening” in the mid 1960s.

Being brought up in a culture of alternative lifestyles and radical thought formed a contrast with his subsequent traditional education with its later emphasis on science. This lead to a lifelong interest in building bridges between the scientific/materialist worldview and alternative spirituality/paranormal—an approach very different from those New Age philosophies that seek to reconcile or equate science and spirit. This is strongly reflected in Ramsey Dukes’ writings where he addresses Science, Magic, Art and Religion as four ‘cultures’ as an extension of CP Snow’s popular ‘two culture’ concept.

In this episode, we turn back the clock 170 years, and revisit what is perhaps THE great foundational text of magick of the 19th and 20th century - Transcendental Magick, by the French magus Éliphas Lévi. Éliphas Lévi Zahed, born Alphonse Louis Constant (8 February 1810 – 31 May 1875), was a French esotericist, poet, and author of more than 20 books on magic, Kabbalah, alchemical studies, and occultism. He pursued an ecclesiastical career in the Catholic Church until, after great personal struggle, at the age of 26, he abandoned the Roman Catholic priesthood. At the age of 40, he began professing knowledge of the occult, and becoming a reputed ceremonial magician. The pen name "Éliphas Lévi", was a transliteration of his given names "Alphonse Louis" into the Hebrew. Levi gained renown as an original thinker and writer. His works attracted the attention of the heterogeneous ambiences of the era in Paris and London; from esotericists to artists of romantic or symbolist inspiration. He also expressed his independence by leaving the Masonic lodge of the "Great Orient", believing that it was a form of modern secularization, where knowledge of the original meanings of symbols and rituals was lost. "I ceased being a freemason, at once, because the Freemasons, excommunicated by the Pope, did not believe in tolerating Catholicism."

Many authors influenced Levi's political, occultic and literary development, such as the French monarchist Joseph de Maistre, whom he quotes in many parts of his Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, Paracelsus, Robert Fludd, Swedenborg, Fabre d'Olivet, the Rosicrucians, Plato, Raymond Lull, and other esoterics.

In this episode, I'm ultra excited to talk to Lionel Snell, aka Ramsey Dukes, one the prime movers of chaos magick, and an absolutely lovely individual.

Zach Leary is a podcaster, writer, cognitive dissident, yogi and psychedelic advocate. Growing up in Beverly Hills in the 1980s, he came to realise that the man who often took him to school in the morning and “tossed the ball” in the backyard with him, was not only one of the instigators of the counterculture movement of the 1960s, but also “had a front row seat for some of the most important cultural movements of the late twentieth century.” This led Zach to create a path for himself that’s been rich with many different incarnations ranging from digital marketing ace for Apple to futurist to psychedelic integration specialist and advocate.

Zach has hosted of both the “It’s All Happening with Zach Leary” podcast and “The MAPS Podcast.” They have helped to cement him as one of the most thought-provoking podcasters in the cultural philosophy genre of podcasting.
