The time has come!! Now that both of us have read the Witcher Saga books, it's time to finally return to this universe and talk about them!
However, it being a rather involved story and universe, alongside comprising 5 books, we decided to make two episodes but discussing the whole Saga.
In this first part we dive into some of the relationships of Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer, how the story's form has changed since the short story collections, we spend time talking about the villains, and some of the dynamics of power and mob violence depicted. And there's still lots more to come!

The time has come to face our enemy once more. Yuval Noah Harari wrote another book, so we dive into how it is, indeed, a torment of pain and horror.
We try to fathom how Harari misunderstands History, historical practice, information, institutions, religion, power, science fiction, AI etc etc. There is very little accurate in this book, and yet, it seems to be rather successful in its nonsense.
As we interweave some of the MANY ways this book misrepresents reality, we try to get into what Harari understands and believes, and how he's still terrible in it.

We have a special episode with a great guest! In order to talk about the magnificent show The Wire (2002-2008) we bring along Oli Mould, professor of Human Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London!
In this episode we dive into this destructive institution that is the police, alongside a few others. All while understanding how the show interweaves its characters, environment and narrative that is always aware of the sociological, the psychological and the personal.
There is nothing quite like The Wire, and we have to talk about how it is still relevant for understanding the militarization of the US and its police, and plenty plenty more.

In what we find to be one of the original inspirations for self-help books, we... certainly suffer through this one! Talking about how an Emperor can isolate himself from his society and keep himself above it, becoming "a perfect and invincible soul".
And we tackle it in turn, with our own experiences, charging against his feeble attempts at "human nature", what he understands existance and history to be, and worst and scariest of all, the horror of men.

There was potential (some) to this show, as we elaborate on it, and yet, a rushed production, a terrible political perspective, and more, turn this into yet another, although worse, liberal and alienating show - reminds us of the previous time we had André on, for X-Men '97, what a shame!
And yet, although we are frustrated, we managed to make the most of it, with a better weighter episode than we expected, and no less fierce criticism, as it demanded of us.

All while trying to understand what makes these games sometimes good, and sometimes fun, especially as we think of this idea of the "pulp" and how it helps to describe Bethesda and Fallout.

In a game where you relentlessly shoot poor brown and black people and play the "American Hero" cop, we dive into what this game does with this setup and what it doesn't believe in. For as Leon put it before, there is little it believes but pure raw Hatred.
Obviously, we have to talk about it, from the terrible representation and use of Brazil, to the awfulness and pointlessness of this game more broadly.

We dive into what happens when one tries to recreate just the aesthetics of a genre, and the effects of cutting out the politics. And so we turn to this hollowness at the heart of a "cyberpunk" that has left out all that was remotely punk about it. It is what Walter Benjamin calls politics rendered aesthetic, it is what fascism does. So join us with the limitations of these products and how they could have been so much more interesting, and think through some of that too!

For this first episode of November we have a very special show on our hands! We are talking about Marge Piercy's 1976 Utopian novel, Woman on the Edge of Time!
And to do that, we invited on Brazilian researcher, translator, professor, and friend, Dr. Elton Furlanetto of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS)! Elton translated the first ever Brazilian edition of the novel, released earlier this year, and helped make this a phenomenal episode!
To talk about this novel and the Communal Utopianism it presents us we spoke about the distinct realities of the lived 1970s as a marginalized Mexican-American woman and the contrast to a utopian society, we delved into the cultural representations of present and future, alongisde many ways in which this book expands the ideas of what a utopia can and should be, and how we can work toward it in our lives.

We also engage in the cosmic aspects of space, the room occupied by the unknown, and the chance for creating gaps of hope even in a dystopic and capitalist reality. It's a very special episode, and one that shows how, even in dystopias, we must ever struggle to make room for utopias.

We dig into this self-absorbed narrative and argument that, while trying to retell most or all human history, can never escape capitalism. Even worse, one that can only see history via lenses of technological progress and development. We bring out the true technofascist nature of Harari's views and book, while sharing the pain of having read terrible historical work and even worse speculation, peddled as absolute certain prophecy.
(We should note, all the prophecies have already been proved as unreal or untrue)

I am joined by the excellent Chase from Faith and Capital and Mass Struggle, so we can talk about utopias, utopianism and two different short stories: The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, by Le Guin, and The Ones Who Stay and Fight, by N. K. Jemisin.
From the titles you can already tell the latter is connected to or commenting on the former, and we draw on that. On the images of utopia, on ideology and what both stories offer to analysis, critique and understanding as well! This is a very special Writer's Desk, as it was originally closed, but now I release it to all, along with the companion piece on theReading Corner It is, after all, a conversation on the question of the Death of the Author, what it is, and how to think is alongside ethics.
In it I both present the concept and try to engage with how to engage in contemporary capitalism and any possibility for ethics or, at the very least, avoiding blatantly unethical actions. It is not an easy nor a simple conversation in the slightest, and yet, I try to handle it as best as I can and to add some important insights.
However, as I edited it, and following a train of thought the next day, I realized that there was a pretty large gap in the conversation, for which I made the Reading Corner a part of this as well. Thus, I dub this the Researcher's POV and you can at this very moment also read the Reader's POV, have fun!

We talk violence, feminicide, representation and police violence, how art can be intensely political while still being beautiful. It is a painful and horrifying book of even worse stories, so CW for this violence, but a conversation to be had on what these disappearances mean, for the individuals, for society, and what are they really, deeply implicated by capitalism, violence and domination! It is... a lot! But an essential talk to be had, enjoy!!

I am back, this time, with a particularly intense and chaotic book, which you can hopefully also judge whether you want to read it or not, it's JG Ballard's 1970 (Collection of essays? Stories? Novel?) The Atrocity Exhibition! A particularly scathing approach to contemporary American and, in general, neoliberal culture and the machinations of capital.
In the episode with Kyle we go from the particularities of punk and technology, through the power of literature and connecting these cultural criticisms to a larger action in the world, to how we Historians behave and feel about it, and some of the most vile behaviours of capital in the present day via the worship of Reagan and the evil Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. There's a lot to it! No wonder we accidentally chatted for nearly 2 hours! Have fun!

Hello everyone! This time we experimented with something slightly different from our usual material, we talked a retelling from Nordic Mythology! In particular from Neil Gaiman's collection of it.
We focused on a particular one "The Mead of Poetry" and expanded wildly on art, creation, then onto the proper Left part of the show. Towards the violence involved in poetry and literature's world, and how understanding the world and the material conditions are invaluable to understanding the work itself. An attempted light talk delved Left, so par for the course, really! We hope you find it fun and interesting as well!

This time I talk to you briefly about a Brazilian novel published druing the time of the Military Dictatorship, that lasted from 1964 to 1985. Published in 1973, "The Girl in the Photograph", by Lygia Fagundes Telles, an amazing book on women, violence and the situation of Brazil, both in its connections with the dictatorship, but also a lot more! It was a complex talk, but hopefully one you'll find interesting as well!
