Welcome aboard The Giddy Carousel of Pop!
We are a Smash Hits appreciation podcast dedicated to the swingorilliant British pop magazine which ran from 1978 to 2006. In each episode, we take an old issue of Ver Hits (usually from the 1980s but may slip a year or two either side of that) and discuss what’s on its pages, looking at who’s riding high on the carousel and who’s heading down the dumper.
We always have a guest to help us along the way, so we’ll be talking to the readers, the writers, and who knows, maybe even the odd pop star who appeared in its pages.

In our first foray into the 1990s, journalist and podcaster Laura Kelly from The Big Issue joins us on the carousel and takes us back to the Smash Hits of 1-14 April 1992.

It was under his editorship that Smash Hits achieved its highest-ever circulation figures, but it wasn't all plain sailing. From going to dinner with Michael Jackson to asking the members of U2 to draw a duck, Barry takes us behind the scenes of what life was like at Ver Hits.

David joined Smash Hits as a writer in early 1979, becoming its editor from 1981-1983 and subsequently managing editor, being involved with the magazine in some capacity for pretty much its whole lifespan. He went on to oversee the launch of many other titles during the 80s and 90s including Just Seventeen, Q, Mojo and Empire to name a few, and in 2003, The Word magazine. He was also a presenter on Whistle Test, the BBC TV music show, and part of the tv presentation team for the Live Aid concert in 1985, when Bob Geldof swore at him live on air in front of millions of viewers!
These days, he’s the author of a string of best-selling music books, the latest of which is The Rock & Roll A Level, and he also co-hosts the Word In Your Ear podcast alongside his former Smash Hits colleague Mark Ellen.
