Unscripted conversations with Toni Cowan-Brown and Sorcha Rochford about current affairs, pop culture, life, and how we got here.
We are fiercely opinionated, unapologetically honest and we don’t always agree. Join us weekly for a deep dive into honest conversations where empathy and vulnerability, and facts take center stage.
From this conversation, we came to the realisation that we may also be romanticising an era of journalism that no longer exists. In an ever-globalised world, we are continuously aware of what's happening but our media may not be equipped to cover the complexities of such events as the uprising that we are witnessing in Iran. As we continue to be in the 24h news cycle, what is the line between a journalist and a celebrity pundit? And who do we trust to bring us to deliver the news impartially and factually?
We took some time to look at what the data can tell us about these mid-term elections and what we can expect moving forward. Stay tuned for part two next week where we discuss election integrity.
As two women who identify as the left side of the political aisle, we question why the UK Conservative party has a track record of putting women forward to be elected (unlike the Labour party) and yet these women are constantly set up for failure.
When we're in the conversation about women in leadership, we identify that the failings are present in all industries - from politics to porn.

We can acknowledge the magnitude of her leadership and her role as a woman over nine decades - from Winston to Truss. No other leader, let alone a woman has lived through. that tenure.
With that said, we cannot overlook the violent colonization by the British Empire of African, Asian and Caribbean nations. A bitter reminder to many of the decades of suffering, and economic and social devastation to many Black, POC, and Irish communities... just to name a few. Now more than ever, the role of the royal family is in question.
It is a very slippery slope to have two separate platforms - one for each ideology (i.e. Twitter and Truth) - whereby we can pretend that the 'other' isn't present and actively so. What does it look like (and take) to be able to listen to the other side? If only to remain informed vs. the very human desire we have to change minds.

Most recently a man by the name of Andrew Tate took the internet by storm mostly because of his falsehoods and our desire for polarizing content. There is an inherent complexity in discussing the likes of Andrew Tate but are there pieces we can all agree with? The reality is that we often don't have the tools or even channels/spaces to have an informed discussion on the topic.

For our first episode back we started our conversation on the recent media outrage targeted at Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin for being a woman that ‘had the audacity’ to go out on a night out with friends. This story hit a nerve with both of us for many reasons but at its core, it was the double standard.

We acknowledge that this is not a zero-sum game and that it is not a 'male' problem but rather a societal issue. We live in a society that has isolated women to be objects and performers rather than people. This is not a man vs. woman problem - we all have to change the way we think, act, and react.

In this episode, we discuss the different ways in which voices are amplified, in particular looking at those who have felt dismissed by traditional media outlets and ultimately return to the familiarity. In this instance, we kick off discussing Joe Rogan and the expert opinions and knowledge he receives on topics that he and his guests may not be equipped to speak impartially and factually on.
Ultimately the question we tried to answer in our conversation was—Where does the responsibility lie? Is it on the listener to do their due diligence or is it the platform hosting the content or the hosts and guests?
In the episode, we dig into the idea that all "orthodox" economists are men who are looked after by a wife or a mother and that's shaped how they define economic value & productivity. There are so many facets to this conversation and for that, we are grateful to have Laëtitia's expert perspective.
We discussed motherhood, the impacts of COVID on women, the historical dependence on men dictating our economic worth, and how some women win the lottery with genetics. If like us you were wondering what ageism is, we referred to the WHOs definition that identifies ageism intersects and exacerbates other forms of disadvantage including those related to sex, race and disability.
Ageism refers to the stereotypes (how we think),
prejudice (how we feel) and,
discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age.

This activism can take many forms. From Marcus Rushford standing up for children without meals in the UK, To Taylor Swift voicing her opinion for the first time in the political landscape. When talking about our respective love for Football and Formula One, we discovered the connective tissues that we individually shared with our fathers in our love for these sports. We know personally that caregiving isn't solely the responsibility of the women. But if you make the decision to be a caregiver as a woman you are often overlooked in the workplace for the time you have taken to be with your family. We know that this is ultimately incorrect as the skills gained as a mother are those of leadership, and are sorely needed in places of work.
It shouldn't be a zero-sum game. As of now, it's somewhat a "doomed if you do, doomed if you don't" scenario. In the end, motherhood and caregiving is a far more complex topic than we have been led to believe. And should never be a flippant; Do you not want kids?

From 2016 to 2021, we experienced a digital presence that amplified and normalised troll-like behaviour from a democratically elected world leader. We discuss the impact and the role social media companies can and should have in restricting such content. As well as our roles as content creators and users.
In 2021, we are experiencing what it feels like to be online after Trump has been deplatformed. But we also know that this game of whack-a-mole is not a long-term viable solution. We close out this episode with an open-ended question. What is the solution to content moderation? Some suggestions include AI and stronger regulatory bodies but ultimately we need to bring all stakeholders to the table to ensure a safer online experience for all.

In this episode, we discuss the merit of a co-working space building community within the tech space. The addition of the community felt like a natural evolution to the likes of companies that came before, such as Regus, as both founders grew up in communes.

Sorcha and Toni have been friends and co-workers for years. One of the reasons we became such great friends was our individual desire to be unapologetic about who we are. And that is something that can take years to master, especially when we have a society that is continuously telling us all the things we should and shouldn't be. We all have an unapologetic side to ourselves.
This is our trailer and brief introduction to why we started Unapologetic Women in the first place. We are excited (and mildly petrified) to share this journey with you.
