In this thought-provoking episode, Kat delves into the complex topics of identity, ancestral trauma, and what it means to live a good life. The episode begins with Kat reflecting on a common sentiment, "I'm not sure who I am," setting the stage for a deeper exploration of self-identity. Kat offers three powerful mantras designed to help listeners navigate their personal journeys and challenges.
3 Mantras from the episode include:
The conversation turns philosophical as Kat poses the question, "What is a good life?" She suggests that life is a weighted average of all our moments, with the weight determined by the intensity of our emotions. Kat concludes with a powerful message on resilience and positivity, encouraging listeners to raise their contributory frequency, asserting that even those who have endured severe trauma can make a positive impact.
Tune in for a deep and enriching discussion that offers both practical advice and philosophical insights, helping you understand and navigate the complexities of identity and life's challenges.
They say that there is a planetary SHIFT going on.
Sometimes that SHIFT feels like S*&T.
Como? (what?)
Homo? (what?)
Did I say “Homo Lumininous” in this podcast?
Yes I did. If you want to learn more about this shift, I enjoyed this video and would love to share it with you:

I also mention “the Giving Tree” conundrum, and i invite you to listen to that episode, and check out the show notes here.
Thank you for listening!
I had no idea that I’d break into tears during this podcast, but I did. The topic is love, after all. And my heart is broken.
So I call on Shakira to help me, again. She has been one of my important spiritual guides in my life. I LOVE SHAKIRA. (Me encanta!).Sometimes it can put your own problems in perspective when you hear about those of others. Shakira has been through an insane year. My broken heart goes out to hers.
Let’s start with this song by Shakira, Monotonía
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5y6xLpRwx4
OMG that is me! I put my heart on a sleeve, and it got stepped on big time. Thrown on the street, broken. I have felt empty and lying on the floor like Shakira is shown.
Then we go to Don’t You Worry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me19SUmWu2s
I know it’s possible to cry all day and night until you fall asleep sitting up, but eventually, it DOES stop. Your dogs or cats might be soaking wet with your tears and really pent up with energy because you haven’t left the house (and are really worrying the neighbors with whatever can come through the walls), but it does eventually stop. At least for that day.
Then you might find yourself crying the next day again, and it may also come in waves when you least expect it. But I have to say to myself, “everything’s gonna be okay.” Gracias Shakira.
Then we move to Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRpeEdMmmQ0
“When you fall get up, eh eh.”
And I will start to meet my OWN NEEDs.
After all, what we need or want from others, we must be able to give to ourselves. Connection with others plays a role in everyone's lives in different ways for different reasons. It is difficult to sustain connections with others when we struggle to connect and meet our needs within ourselves. So…
I will see myself
I will hear myself
I will understand myself
I will fairly judge myself.
Maybe I need to take up dance lessons so that I can move like Shakira. RRRRR. And get back to my work at Nurture to help communities in need.
Mantras from the show:#1: Get to know love; we don’t understand it in our culture#2: Move past “conditional” vs. “unconditional” love and consider compassionate love.#3: Understand the many types of love the Greeks appreciated: Eros, Philia, Ludus, Agape, Pragma, Philatia. I realize that I hardly get into the types on my podcast, so just read about it here.Your homework, if you choose to accept: go help someone in need!
If you are a woman, tune in to what might be happening to other women (or the feminine side of a man) today. There seems to be strong energy around conflict and the change of an old model that involved subjugating women. (Yep, I just wrote that– ask me about the times I’ve seen gross men pat waitresses’ asses and be total assholes. I’ve been on the wrong side of that equation, ME TOO).
See the paradigm for change from episode 124.
Two questions if you’re brave enough to consider change:- Can women and men start to do LESS of being the Perpetrator and Victim?
And move into Creator and Challenger?- Can we start to truly CO-CREATE the way I believe that God/Goddess/All that is intended?
Let’s finish with, What is Love (the SNL version with A Night at the Roxbury
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2h4PhgobI8
Thank you for watching. I’m going to go pick up dog poop now. Hasta luego!
I woke up this morning “on the wrong side of the bed.” (It’s likely the divorce I’m going through).
Sometimes I turn to music to help me process the emotions I’m feeling. The word “emotion” comes from “emote,” which is about being in motion. I believe that feelings are meant to be felt, to be processed, which creates movement and allows them to move in and through our system.
What I want to avoid is getting feelings stuck. Or repressing what is meant to be felt.
Since I’m on an inner journey to uncover repressed emotions and better understand myself, I’ll use whatever tools I find helpful.
Even if that means singing off-tune (loudly) in public. Are your ears ready?
In the spiritual growth world, we talk about the Negative words that are to be avoided. We say, “Don’t focus on what you DON’T want.” (Focus on what you DO want).
However, I believe that it is important to understand and feel the entire spectrum of emotions, from “bad” to good, to be able to appreciate the difference.
I mention a kids’ book about a little girl who loves pink, but after her world turns to ALL PINK ALL THE TIME, she stops appreciating pink the way she used to. It is an analogy for how we can’t expect to be happy all the time, or “happy” just doesn’t feel the same.
For today’s show, I drive the mantras based on No, Never, and Not but also songs with messages. I look forward to your comments!
Midwest Mantra #1: Say “No” to a World that Makes You Sad. Musical inspiration: Pop Life (Prince). It sounds like Prince is asking us to say no to: -poverty -lack of generosity -not appreciating each other -jealousy -hierarchy -fake appearances -lack of access to healthcare and education -addiction -thirst -being boring
Midwest Mantra #2: Never Be Out of Love.
Musical inspiration: All Out of Love (Air Supply).
I spoke in episode 123 about creating good boundaries to help you manage the amount of pain you can handle in a single day, week, month, or year (or lifetime).
Sometimes, per Bob Newhart’s sketch on SNL, we need to just “Stop it!”
Midwest Mantra #3: Not so much talking. Menos palabras?
Musical inspiration: Poor Unfortunate Souls (From Disney’s The Little Mermaid). Bonus inspiration: Whip it (Devo)
What I believe we need is heartfelt listening and clear communication about our needs.
Can we do that?
Shall we sing more?
Would you like to comment? What are YOUR needs (and do you communicate them?).
Thanks for listening. Kathryn
PS. I was enjoying Hint water during the recording. I highly recommend Kara Goldin’s book, Undaunted.
I’ve been on the move a lot. I've counted up all the times that I've moved in the past six months and I moved 14 TIMES! How crazy is that?
Anyway, I just did this incredible exercise with my coach, Jessica. And she helped me to identify my values. And I would not have guessed what they were.
My number one was purpose. I'm always the person that asks why. My second is opportunity and third is recognition.
Here are the mantras:
Do you think that time is speeding up change?
Can we make change fun?
Change is growth. Change is good.
This mantra is actually a song: Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen. My question is:
What is your favorite lyric? Because there's so much in there about advice and things that you can take and digest, but I'm curious what resonates with you today in this moment?
Songs:

Why have I been so grumpy?
Why the under eye bags?
What is this about imposter syndrome?
I’ve been crying. And dealing with some health challenges. Health challenges always suck, but they are especially hard when you’re supposed to be some kind of “wellness expert”.
In this solo cast “short”, I’m going to be brave, and I hope that by listening/watching this episode, you too can be inspired to be a little more brave.
These days I’m not just crying about my health issues. I’ve got some broken plates I’m dealing with (LINK TO EP 124) as well as coming to terms with my tree stump status (LINK 125).
As I type these show notes, I’m sitting in the waiting room of a dermatologist. I’m here for a biopsy that will help us to investigate a tricky little blood marker for autoimmune that came up positive for me. Why is my body attacking itself?
I’m not going to get all BOO HOO here. In dealing with this “bad news”, I remembered a wonderful clip from SoulPancake that featured an extraordinary young man, Zach Sobiech. I hope SoulPancake won’t be mad that I took about 14 seconds of one of their clips for my podcast- hey, maybe I can help to promote it!
Zach was diagnosed with a terminal illness. When he received this information, he launched into an amazing period of creativity to share lessons about life. One of my favorite songs by Zach is
Clouds.
I think about what Zach faced, and how he remained positive.
What I’m dealing with pales in comparison. I mean, just because I’ve got a bunch of doctors appointments and tests, does that give me the right to become Ms. Grumpy pants?
No.
I will talk about serious stuff on my podcast, but I will always endeavor to Make It Fun.
Here are the 3 mantras from today’s “Solo Cast Short”:
#1: Put yourself in each others shoes- ask the two questions I forgot to say out loud on Episode 125 (but I put them in the show notes). Here they are:
Question 1: Will the boy step into the tree’s shoes* (know and feel the giving of unconditional love)
Question 2: Will the tree step into the boy’s shoes** (know and feel the receiving of unconditional love)
When I work in my nonprofit Nurture, I tell kids during our “nutrition education classes” that they don’t have to try the broccoli if they don’t want to. But I remind them that their taste buds change all the time. I get a lot of success with this approach. What do you think?
#3: Every sentient being that you encounter is a potential spiritual guide. All you have to do is be ready and open!
I’m curious about your thoughts on my desire to go on a journey inward. Did I pick the wrong season for this journey?
The song for today’s episode is The Safety Dance. I’ve put the lyrics below with two important lines highlighted. Any other lyrics you’d like to emphasize?
Sticky notes for future episodes:
- We’re gonna do an EP on Happiness. Stay tuned!
In this episode, I I mention my Positive on Publishing interview with #1 NYT bestselling author and transformational leader, Marci Shimoff. She has this beautiful “recipe” for manifestation, as follows:
Intention
Attention
No tension
Listen to the full interview with Marci here (LINK) (so good!).
The Safety Dance Lyrics
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance
And if they don't dance
Well, they're no friends of mine
Say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come
From out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
And we can dance
Or sing
We can go when we want to
Night is young and so am I
And we can dress real neat
From our hats to our feet
And surprise 'em with the victory cry
Say, we can act if we want to
If we don't, nobody will
And you can act real rude and totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile
And say, we can dance, we can dance
Everything's out of control
We can dance, we can dance
They're doing it from pole to pole
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody look at your hands
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody's taking the chance
Safety dance
We can dance if we want to
We've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it, never gonna lose it
Everything'll work out right
I say, we can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Because your friends don't dance
And if they don't dance
Well, they're no friends of mine
Well, it's the safety dance
It's the safety dance
Well, it's the safety dance
Well, it's the safety dance
Oh, it's the safety dance
Oh, it's the safety dance
Everybody's taking the chance
What a delight it is to be back on my podcast. I’ve been MIA for over 6 months. This podcast gives you a little insight into what I’ve been up to. Yikes.
“You Are Not Alone” is a wonderful song by Michael Jackson. Have a listen!
Today, I talk about my near-death experience and how even when you feel alone, you are not.
Ultimately, when we feel alone, we want to remember to love ourselves. To do that, we must start to uncover, love, and heal, our core wounds.
Feelings like “I’m not enough. I'm too much. I'm not worthy. I'm not lovable.”
Core wounds are related to shame and abandonment and can lead to apathy, which lies at the bottom of the Map of Consciousness.
I interviewed Dr. Mario Martinez about core wounds, which he calls “archetypal wounds” or “dampers of becomingness”; in his framework, they include shame, abandonment, and betrayal.
But In today’s solo cast, I share my own story. Gulp. Get ready for me to be vulnerable and share some deep stuff. I offer 11 mantras, which I call “Midwest Mantras” (since I am currently recording in the Midwest).
Thank you for listening. Feel free to drop me a note on my Contact page or on social media if you have any questions or comments.
Mantra #1: Embrace stillness when possible– even in the chaos; rest when you can.
(A helpful tool for this process is the “Lake Meditation” by Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn and Dr. Andrew Weil- a FAVORITE).
Mantra #2: When all is lost, do a wheely!
Mantra #3: Feel your feelings; feel to heal.
Since when is it crazy to be angry? Since when is it illegal to be angry?
I tell the story of almost getting arrested by the local cops while sitting in a bathtub of mud, trying to cool off. Yes, I had just had a crazy explosion of emotion and release during some back-to-back therapy appointments that I actually did not want to attend. See Mantra #9. It would have been better for me to have set some boundaries and said “I need a nap more than I need therapy today, thank you.” This leads to the next Mantra…
Mantra #4: Assign yourself a time-out - especially when you are about to blow it.
I hope you don’t “blow it” the way I did with my family. You can’t take back things you say. Even if what you are sharing are “truths,” remember that having a FILTER is a good relationship tool. Sharing your truths- in the form of a verbal firehose of vomit- is not helpful to those you love.
So what I suggest (for myself from now on!) is to give myself a time out in the same way that I did when my kids were little. 1, 2, 3, Magic (remember that book?). My kids thought I was counting for THEM, I was counting for ME! (Boy, I needed those time-outs when I was a mom of young kids!).
For you: Take a nap, meditate, go for a walk, but learn to self-regulate so that you don’t blow up your relationships and your life!!
Reminds me of that great song by INXS (Mediate):
“Self regulate, try not to hate, love your mate, don’t suffocate on your own hate” etc.!
Mantra #5: Your basic needs are the following: food, shelter, and companionship.
We can debate if there are other needs, which I do believe include water and certain other support, and I am working on a daily planner that will incorporate these items. Reach out to me if you’d like to see an early edition.
Mantra #6: The new paradigm of win-win includes a third win.
1. Win for self
*This goes beyond the Steven Covey “win-win” because we can start to include what is a win for the Higher Good. It is time we shift the paradigm.
Mantra #7: Sometimes what looks like shit is actually gold.Mantra #8: Simplify. Mantra #9: Create good boundaries to help you manage the amount of pain you can handle in a single day, week, month, or year (or lifetime).Mantra #10: Parents - remember the importance of unconditional love.
Elena and Alexander, I love you SO MUCH!!
Mantra #11: Love yourself.
During this interview, I introduce a new book I’m working on. This self-help book will provide, among other things, advice about how we can navigate the changes we are experiencing in the paradigm shift happening today.
I also mention a few times the work of Dr. Bruce Lipton who was a faculty member at Quantum University. I highly recommend checking out his work.

We’ve talked over many episodes about the topic of trauma. We’ve explored various modalities to address trauma, from Brainstpotting to EFT to coaching to plant medicine.
Today we talk about the brain and how our developmental years impact our relationships and success.
I invite trauma-informed developmental psychologist Dr. Carol Scott on the show to discuss her SASS (Self-Aware Success Strategies) methodology with listeners. We summarize our discussion with 7 mantras that lead to seven essential strategies for success through relationships.
Mantra #1: It’s never too late to address the past.
Mantra #2: Face Your ACEs. It is a good idea for everyone to take the Adverse Childhood Experiences quiz.
Here are some resources from Dr. Carol’s website.
Mantra #3: Our nervous systems are at the heart of disruptions in our relationships.
Mantra #4: When trying to decipher behavior that may trigger us, ask: What is the need behind the deed?
Mantra #5: Relationships matter when it comes to success.
Mantra #6: The first seven years of life (2,500 days) are crucial to determining your capacity for relationships now.
Mantra #7: Understand Dr. Carol’s seven essential strategies for success through relationships:
1. The infant strategy: trust
2. The toddler strategy: independence
3. The “first adolescence” strategY; faith
4. The pre-k strategy: negotiation
5. The Kindergarten strategy: vision
6. The first grade strategy: compromise
7. The second grade strategy: acceptance.

See Emily Fletcher and I sing this “mantra” during my interview with her in episode 105.
Mantra #3: The “how” of creating an alignment between the heart and soul is to raise your frequency.
Mantra #4: We are on the cusp of the golden age when we will wake up to the essence of who we are (love, joy, ease, flow, etc.).

Today we dive into a particular plant medicine, mescaline, the active ingredient in San Pedro (Wachuma).
Dr. Isabel Sharkar is a naturopathic doctor and the co-founder of Indigo Integrative Health Clinic in Washington, D.C. Dr. Isabel, who I call “Izzy” throughout the interview given our personal connection, has been serving the community in health restoration and body optimization for over a decade. She is known as a beauty expert and has some interesting insights for us on purging, healing, beauty, and anti-aging.
Izzy beams through to us from Portugal, where many plant medicines have been decriminalized.
We summarize our discussion with 10 powerful mantras about healing, be that through plant medicine or other techniques Izzy mentions including health food, water, hot/cold therapy, detoxification, meditation, vagal nerve stimulation, and simply being in nature.
Mantra #1: The pandemic has created polarization and separation. We need a way out… see Mantra #2.
Mantra #2: Be present, breathe, listen, bring in love and remember the ultimate desire for connection.
Mantra #3: True healing happens on all levels: mind, body, and soul.
We reference the books When the Body Says No (https://smile.amazon.com/When-Body-Says-Understanding-Stress-Disease/dp/1630262560/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1644009563&sr=1-) and The Body Keeps the Score (https://smile.amazon.com/Body-Keeps-Score-Healing-Trauma/dp/0670785938/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1644009654&sr=1-1)
Mantra #4: When the student is ready, the teacher appears (this is true for plant medicine as a master teacher).
Mantra #5: Carrying around years and pounds of emotional baggage is NOT a good look! (Purging and healing can make you look ten years younger!).
Mantra #6: San Pedro is a master teacher (plant); It is considered “grandfather”.
Mantra #7: San Pedro can allow what so many of us need in this day and age: movement, being in nature, and the slowing down of time.
Mantra #8: Mescaline (the active ingredient in San Pedro) has many healing properties (supports immune function, anti-microbial, supportive in healing the gut lining, reduction in alcohol abuse, reduction in suicidal thoughts, activates serotonin and dopamine).
Mantra #9: Integration is key and takes time.
See the previous episode with Sam Liebowitz where we talk extensively about integration: https://makeeverythingfun.com/radio/ep116-sam-liebowitz/
Mantra #10: It all starts with intention.

We continue our series on the healing properties of plant medicine with this interview with my friend Dr. Diva Nagula.
Dr. Diva experienced life at full speed as a busy physician running a busy clinic until he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014. He hit “rock bottom” not when he was diagnosed or going through chemotherapy, but when he went into remission and lost his identity yet again. He had moved from doctor to patient (the title of his wonderful book that I highly recommend), and then was faced with a new identity after being cancer-free. As a Dr. Andrew Weil integrative medicine trained physician, Dr. Diva discusses the importance of balancing the mind, body, and spirit for optimal health.

Mantra #1: A life lived in fight/flight leads to disease.
Mantra #2: Algorithms used in traditional medicine don’t always fit the individual.
Mantra #3: An important aspect of healing happens on the spiritual level.
Mantra #4: The ego is there to protect us. But the ego often doesn’t want to let go, because it is attached to an identity. Plant medicine allows the ego to quiet so that healing can occur via a sense of universal oneness.
Mantra #5: We must feel to heal. Distractions get in the way.
Mantra #6: Plant medicine creates neuroplasticity so that you can get unstuck.
Mantra #7: San Pedro moves through the chakras, starting from the root chakra, clearing blockages as it moves up to the crown chakra
Mantra #8: Do your homework so that you can feel safe and get the most from your plant medicine experience.
Mantra #9: Perhaps 20% is the plant medicine, the other 80% is about integration.
Mantra #10: It’s about changing your life, not about taking plant medicine.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, I’ll introduce you to my guest, Odette Peek. Odette is a Transformational Guide, Spiritual Ally & Psychedelic Integration Coach. She was searching for a healing modality to help her get through a very difficult time when she was called to do Ayahuasca. In our conversation, you’ll hear more about her own personal journey as well as how she is helping others.
We summarize our discussion with 6 powerful mantras about healing and the importance of looking at each healee as a unique individual.
Mantra #1: Plant medicine has a way of calling those that are ready.
Mantra #2: Change happens from the inside out.
Mantra #3: Healing can happen through many different modalities. Everyone is different.
Mantra #4: Healing is a never-ending journey.
Mantra #5:When working with plant medicines, you tend to get what you need, not necessarily what you want.
Mantra #6: Integrity is about applying lessons learned to everyday life.
More about Odette
I’m Odette - Transformational Guide, Spiritual Ally & Psychedelic Integration Coach. Many of us feel lost. Our lives feel like an unsolvable puzzle… an emptiness that we can't quite put our finger on. We’re stuck in jobs without meaning, relationships that aren’t fulfilling our deep desires, lives that feel boring, dull, and mediocre at best - or worse; toxic, draining, and unfulfilling to our soul. Somewhere along the way we’ve lost the magic. I know exactly what that feels like. I’d been a seeker and an achiever my entire life. So I worked hard to tick off all the boxes society says you must do. I had lived a life in the fast lane when it came to personal development - years of investing in expensive coaches, 100’s of programs, experimenting with all kinds of conventional (and not-so-conventional) healing methods to fix me. I had tried everything to help me but NOTHING had gone to the root of my discontentment. I was so desperate I would have tried ANYTHING. When I was invited to a retreat in Costa Rica that included Ayahuasca, I said yes on a whim. Aya - what?? I’d never heard of it before...

Thank you everyone for your questions about plant medicine.
I enjoyed your emails, texts, and even those questions that I got while coming and going from yoga class. :)
To help us explore these questions together, I’ve brought some amazing guests together for a podcast series about healing through plant medicine.
Today’s guest is my dear friend Sam Liebowitz. Sam was a guest previously on my other podcast, Positive on Publishing (LINK TO HIS EP).
Sam returns to discuss his work in energy medicine and other healing modalities. Sam reveals his many projects as a multifaceted human on a mission to help others. Listen carefully for a discussion of Sam’s beta program around integration and healing in community.
Our discussion unveils 9 powerful mantras; enjoy the interview!
Mantra #1: Learning about healing can unveil the Healer underneath.
Mantra #2: You can heal and be healed in many ways/ many modalities.
Mantra #3: The Healer and the Healee co-create the healing (with the Healee, not the Healer, truly driving the process)
Mantra #4: Facilitation is not fixing.
Mantra #5: Facilitation is about holding space and creating safety for healing.
Mantra #6: Facilitation is about seeing people as already whole without expectations
Mantra #7: Preparation is key
Mantra #8: Less can be more (going slow can be the fastest way)
Mantra #9: Follow-up (integration) is crucial.
Sam mentions four key elements: rest, whole foods, hydration, and movement; a fifth would be spending time in nature.
Please listen carefully to Sam discuss the need for caution and discernment when thinking about plant medicines.
The Medicine Wheel
Sam described the medicine wheel as containing the four elements of heart, mind, body, and spirit.
In balance, they are:
Heart (water): self-love and connection to others
Mind (fire): analytics and planning
Body (earth): feeling grounded and safe in one's body
Spirit (air): feeling connected to something greater than one’s self
Heart (water): example- MDMA
Mind (fire): example- psilocybin
Body (earth): example- San Pedro
Spirit (air): example- ayahuasca

Mantra #6: Learn through the “six S’s of grief”: silence, swirl, shame, survival, surrender, and shower.
Mantra #7: (If you are a woman or a man with a woman), Beware of the “seven dwarfs of menopause”: itchy, bitchy, sweaty, bloaty, sleepy, forgetful, pyscho.

As a certified Happiness Ambassador through Marci Shimoff’s Happy for No Reason program, I was thrilled to spend an episode exploring the latest in the science of positive psychology and the happiness movement.
My guest today is Becky Morrison. Becky is a mom, wife, and lawyer turned Happiness Coach. Her mission is to spread joy. She believes most people can live happier, easier lives if they get clear on what matters most to them and then develop a plan to do more of that and less of the rest.
We talk about authenticity and her special happiness as we uncover ten mantras for a life filled with joy:
Mantra #1: Happiness is not a destination; it is something that you can enjoy along the way.
Mantra #2: The definition of the “payoff” for your efforts helps to define your own happiness journey and when you celebrate (hopefully often!).
Mantra #3: Shed the “shoulds”.
(Mindfulness and slowing down helps this process; also identify who owns the “shoulds” and recognize that you can shed them in the same way that you can take off a jacket, or lighten an unnecessary burden).
Mantra #4: We determine our own priorities.
(Don't judge the decisions of others about their own priorities).
Mantra #5: Be honest and claim (speak publicly about) your priorities.
Mantra #6: Align your priorities and your happiness recipe with your current season of life.
Mantra #7: Approach your happiness recipe like a fun puzzle.
(Not with the energy of running up against a wall).Mantra #8: Honor the wisdom of the body.
Mantra #9: Encourage kids to reconnect with who they are.
(When they encounter a difficult issue, ask two questions:
1) What can they control? And,
2) What do they want?)
Mantra #10: Know your strengths, and apply them to your happiness recipe.

Welcome to Episode 111 of the Mountain Mantras: Wellness and Life Lessons Podcast. I’m your host, Dr. Kathryn Guylay. Learn more about my work at MakeEverythingFun.com.
Get ready to hear a story that just might change your life.
Today's guest, Jennifer Love, a dear friend and bright light on this planet, tells the story of being knocked off the workhorse just a mere 4 months ago. She went from not being able to walk and needing emergency surgery to sending me a video of her dancing just as we started the interview.
This interview yields 8 mantras that will allow you to leverage what Jennifer learned during her healing journey so that you can create more magic and healing in your own life.
Since Jennifer is a money therapist, she also weaves into the story how emotions have to do with money and how we can harness our emotions and money for a better life.
Jennifer also provides an amazing recipe for Alchemy - “a recipe to turn a pile of crap into a pot of gold”. See below for the recipe.
Mantras:
Mantra #1: Show up for others- it matters
Mantra #2: Trust your intuition
Mantra #3: Manage your mindset to create your own reality
Mantra #4: Meet your pain -rather than trying to escape it
Mantra #5: Give your own light to your body for healing.
(Jennifer describes the energy work she did on herself during her recovery process)
Mantra #6: Don't necessarily accept a diagnosis you don't align with
Mantra #7: Create micro intentions on your journey
Mantra #8: Find joy in everyday life
Jennifer’s “Alchemy recipe” to turn a pile of crap into a pot of gold:
Jennifer’s work as a money therapist shows us that when it comes to money, your decisions are 90% based on emotion and 10% based on logic.
Thus the importance of harnessing your emotions.

What fun to talk to Shawn Wells just following his appearance at the 2021 Sun Valley Wellness Festival in my hometown of Sun Valley, Idaho.
Shawn was part of a panel discussion exploring the healing benefits of plant medicines.
Our interview covers some philosophical insights that undoubtedly connect his time in Sun Valley with his fantastic recent book, The Energy Formula.
You’ll hear that the structure for The Energy Formula came about through an almost magical process.
ENERGY is an acronym that stands for Experiment, Nutrition, Exercise, Routine, Growth, and Your Tribe. The book is Shawn’s magnum opus and incorporates hundreds of scientific citations. The book includes chapter summaries, shares a resources guide, and provides a “formulators corner” for each chapter.
Shawn wrote- and rewrote- this book during the 2020 covid-19 pandemic. HIs creative endeavors allowed him to turn what was a very fearful and paralyzing situation (for many) into a process to help others.
The interview yields 10 “mantras” that will allow you to navigate your life post-pandemic with more grace, health, and fun.
Mantra #1: You can be your own best -and worst -critic. Shawn talks about how he balanced these inner voices to create the best version of his book.
Mantra #2: You can only give to others from an overflowing cup. Make sure not to deplete your cup and practice self-care and self-acceptance.
Mantra #3: Engage your inner child in your creative endeavors.
Mantra #4: Consider taking “hustle,” grind,” even “work” out of your vocabulary; can you replace them with “ease,” “flow,” “fun.: and even “play”?
Mantra #5: Using the above mantra, shift from “inner work” into “inner play”.
Mantra #6: Chase your own “hell yeses”.
Mantra #7: Communicating your own needs is essential to the healing process.
Mantra #8: Grant yourself grace.
Mantra #9: Get past the polarization in today's dialogue; release attachment to something being either “right” or “wrong”.
Mantra #10: Release judgment and ask open-ended questions when presented with ideas that differ from your own.

Michelle is a former corporate warrior, trained chef, and multi-potentialite whose personal health issues and struggles with traditional medicine inspired her to upend the way the world tackles health, wellness, and prosperity.
Enjoy the show and these amazing mantras:
Mantra #1: Embrace your authentic feminine Goddess aspects (nurturing, vulnerability, receptivity, etc.) to achieve greater success in business and life.
Mantra #2: Responding is different than reacting. Reacting is when you are unable to hear/listen to the story and the other person’s point of view.
We talked about a model that suggests that “action” is about recognizing when you are in reaction. You can then move to interaction and proaction in order to co-create for the better good of all.
Mantra #3: We can only control our response- everything else is uncertain.
Mantra #4: Influence is different than control (and influence is superior to control as there is really no such thing as control).
Mantra #5: Triggered moments are the best times to keep one’s mouth shut.
Mantra #6: When you are triggered by someone else, try the mirroring exercise from Primal Uprising.
Mantra #7: Escaping the zoo is all about keeping an open mind, asking questions, and avoiding fear and polarization.
The Primal Uprising Litmus Test questions and the end of each chapter provide provocative questions to help you explore a path to escape the constructs of the Human Zoo.
Mantra #8: Each person is sovereign.
Mantra #9: Programming starts in childhood and is maintained by fear and polarization.
We talked about a conversation between Harry Massey of NES and Dr. Bruce Lipton and the influence of theta brain states (suggestibility of childhood and how we are programmed. This interview also talks about how we can interrupt the program to pursue our desires and dreams. https://poddtoppen.se/podcast/1266259176/energy4life-by-nes-health/48-reprogramming-our-reality-with-dr-bruce-lipton
Mantra #10: Find a tribe that will challenge you with an open mind and will hold you accountable for progress.
We talked about the difference between the url (online connection) vs. the “irl” (In Real Person). Find out about the next Palelofx.com here: www.paleofx.com.
Mantra #11: Divergent ideas create evolution.
Mantra #12: Paleo is about (holistically) removing toxins from your life.
Mantra #13: The Paleofx model includes 7 Pillars of Health, as follows:
Mantra #14: COVID was a wake-up call that health has to be a priority.
More about Michelle Norris
Michelle is a former corporate warrior, trained chef, and multi-potentialite whose personal health issues and struggles with traditional medical orthodoxy inspired her to upend the way the world tackles health, wellness, and prosperity.
She soon became one of Paleo’s most outspoken evangelists, then co-founded and is now CEO of Paleo f(x)TM, the largest Paleo event in the world. She’s a passionate speaker, motivator, and guiding light to those seeking deliverance from a broken healthcare system and disabled economic system.
Having left the corporate grind far behind, she is now a serial entrepreneur in the health and wellness space, and a tireless firebrand for advancing the Paleo movement; a cultural reawakening of self-empowerment for the 21st century. Having survived the death of her 22-year-old daughter, Michelle knows what it’s like to fight back from an overwhelming loss. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, she used the tragedy as a catalyst for her to “put up or shut up”, and follow through with her vision of leaving the economic status quo behind, and becoming a self-made entrepreneur. All this, at the pit of the housing market crash of 2008. Her belief, you can always find beauty among the ashes.
What’s fun for Michelle:
Helping someone find the keys to their cell door and get free of their imprisonment in the Human Zoo. Empowering people to take back their personal sovereignty.

This episode releases at a time when news reports share that many of the US population has gained an average of 10-15 pounds during the time of the COVID19 lockdown.
We discuss how putting wellness at the top of your list of priorities is more important than ever.
Our guest, celebrity wellness professional, physician, and author Dr. Ann Kulze shares with us some inspiring tips to get us all back on the path to wellness, freedom, and fun.
We summarize topics with 5 mantras that will help you to create more energy and vibrancy in your life. Enjoy the show!
Mantra #1: COVID is yet another reminder from the universe that we must prioritize wellness.
Mantra #2: To create positive change, we can work either top-down (advocacy, policy, etc.) or bottom-up (education, community, etc.). Both Dr. Ann and I work more from the bottom-up approach.
See Dr. Ann’s school for wellness: https://school.drannwellness.com
Kathryn’s nonprofit for nutrition education: www.MakeEverythingFun.com/nurture
Mantra #3: Digital delivery/technology has allowed everyday access to world-class teachers.
Ann’s school has a wealth of classes from basic education to specialized classes on sleep, brain health, gut health, and more.
Mantra #4: Brain health sets the bar; Dr. Ann refers to the brain as the COO of our wellness team. It weighs only about 2% of total body weight yet uses about 25% of our energy needs/calories.
Mantra #5: The gut is the CEO of our wellness team; it regulates appetite, immune function, and inflammation.
Dr. Ann refers to a wonderful book by Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, Fiber Fueled:

Sit tight on your meditation mat and put a smile on your face. I believe you’ll enjoy this interview with the founder of Ziva Meditation, Emily Fletcher.
We move through 8 mantras that will help you to “Stress Less, Accomplish More” (the title of Emily’s bestselling book) in your daily life.
Emily’s definition of “mantra” is different from how I use mantras to create take-aways from the show, so listen for her special description of how she uses mantras in her Ziva meditation practice (as a “mind vehicle”).
I might have butchered this Chinese Proverb during the interview, but Emily and I don’t shoot for perfection in our fun and lighthearted conversation. Here is the proverb as described just slightly more accurately:
“When there is light in the soul, there is beauty in the person.
When there is beauty in the person, there is harmony in the house.
When there is harmony in the house, there is order in the nation.
When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world."
~ Chinese Proverb
Here are the eight mantras from our discussion:
Mantra #1: Happiness is an inside job.
Mantra #2: Don't get stuck in the “I'll be happy when” syndrome.
I discuss this also in episode 96 with “play expert” Jeff Harry: https://makeeverythingfun.com/radio/e096-jeff-harry/
Mantra #3: Be selfish.
(Emily discusses the happy wife=happy life, and happy mom-happy home sayings. Also, there is nothing very sexy about being a martyr.)
Mantra #4: Don't suffer in silence. (You’ll love Emily’s description of her very special “Suffy Awards”.
Mantra #5: Stress makes you stupid, sick, and slow.
Meditation is a wonderful solution.
Mantra #6: Feel to heal.
This includes kiddos too, and there is a wonderful connection between Emily’s work with Ziva Kids and what recent guest Finnian Kelly talked about when he said “if there is one thing we should teach kids in school, it is how to feel). See Finnian’s interview here: https://makeeverythingfun.com/radio/e103-finnian-kelly/
Mantra #7: Overcome the “I can’t do it” obstacle, otherwise know as the “I’m a meditation failure”.
Mantra #8: Let meditation bring you abundance.
Manifestation is the yummy dessert of the Ziva Meditation technique. The “appetizer” is mindfulness, while the “main course” is meditation.
More about Emily Fletcher
Emily Fletcher is the founder of Ziva Meditation and the leading expert in meditation for performance. She has taught over 40,000 people the skill of meditation. She is an international speaker and author. Her best-selling book, Stress Less, Accomplish More, debuted at #7 out of all books on Amazon and has been translated into 12 languages.
The New York Times, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Vogue, and ABC have all featured Emily’s work. She’s been named one of the top 100 women in wellness to watch and has spoken at Apple, Google, and Harvard Business School.
Ziva graduates include Oscar, Grammy, & Emmy award winners, Navy SEALS & NBA players.
The Ziva Technique is a powerful combination of mindfulness, meditation, and manifesting designed to help you get better at life, not meditation.
What’s fun for Emily: One-song dance parties; seeing my students’ successes; getting better at life!

What’s fun for Jackie: Kayaking, floating, hiking, new challenges
This episode was recorded from “mountain” to “mountain” with Finnian in Aspen, CO, and Kathryn in her hometown of Sun Valley, ID.
We bring you nine mantras to create more intentionality into your life, including more intentional relationships, leadership, and love.
Finnian reminds us that the time for Intentionality is NOW; the world is changing at a rapid pace and our roles as humans are also shifting. The new generations will be charged with the task of creating sustainable peace and wellbeing on our planet.
Here are the nine mantras for a more intentional life:
Mantra #1: Don’t put your own pressure/projection on to the younger generation (let them make their own choices)
Mantra #2: Be careful of your language, even if it is positive (as it can create labels and even “conditional love”)
Mantra #3: Life is not linear, and there is no rush!
Mantra #4: Take out your emotional “garbage” on an ongoing basis (don’t suppress emotions)
Mantra #5: Use “tools” to release and process emotions: 1) shaking/movement, 2) breathwork, 3) meditation, 4) emotional clearing, 5) grounding, and 6) serotonin-building sunlight.
Mantra #6: Think of spirituality purely as a way to know yourself better. Spirituality is also a means to experience the wonders of life.
Mantra #7: Be open, not rigid (see tools in Mantra #5)
Mantra #8: Use curiosity to connect across the generational gaps
Mantra #9: Choose love over fear.
This link discusses the “map of consciousness” and tells the story of the “pond skim”: https://makeeverythingfun.com/thoughts-map-conciousness/

In this episode, we continue our series on genetics/epigenetics and optimization of the human system.
This series includes interviews with Aperion founders Dr. Dan Stickler and Dr. Mickra Hamilton, genetics panel creator David Krantz, Aperion medical provider and peptide expert Ryan Lester, and neurotransmitter panel creator Andrea Lahti (today’s interview).
As we did in the David Krantz interview (specific to endocannabinoids), we dive into an actual analysis of genetic data (mine, about my brain!) and how it informs us about actions to optimize the human system.
We have six mantras from the show.
Mantra #1: Neurotransmitters are like an orchestra creating a symphony in the brain.
Mantra #2: The obstacles to having one’s individual genes analyzed (cost, access) are getting lower and lower every day.
Mantra #3: There is no such thing as a “depression gene” (our brains and emotions are much more complex than that).
Mantra #4: A genetics analysis is not scary- it can in fact be validating.
Mantra #5: An epigenetics coach incorporates the client’s goals as the basis for a genetics read with epigenetics interventions.
Mantra #6: The Neurotransmitter panel from Aperion and NeuroEpiGenetix/ Andrea Lahti includes 20 biochemical signals that helps an individual better understand their brain:
Seratonin
Dopamine
Epinephrine
norepinephrine
Histamine
Glutamine
Gaba
Glycine
Acetylcholine
Anandamide
Cytokines
Endorphins
Enkephline
Prodynorphin (Dynorphin)
Nociceptin
Neuropeptide S
Neuropeptide Y
Oxytocin
Adenosine
Nitric Oxide.
Andrea has spent years developing this panel and has focused recently on the complexity and yet simplicity of serotonin. Researchers have known for decades that sunlight affects serotonin, as it's the oldest neurotransmitter in living organisms. Yet, how many psychiatrists prescribe sunlight? From Andrea:
“Being in the mental health field, I can tell you I haven't heard of any of them prescribing sunlight or blue light exposure, but it really does help people.”
More about Andrea Lahti
Andrea Lahti is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Epigenetic Coach. She studied genetics and ethics as an undergrad at the University of South Carolina, then pursued her Masters in Social Work at the University of North Carolina, to gain skills in being an informative and protective liaison between cutting-edge technology and people’s everyday lives.
She has years of experience as a medical social worker to help people balance emotional, mental and physical aspects of their health. Recently, she completed a state-of-the-art genetic panel for neurotransmitter insight - the NeuroEpiGenetix panel - to help guide clients in balancing everything from mental and emotional to physical health.
She uses a systems approach to provide a mix of state-of-the-art technology, education, products and services to help people understand the way their bodies and minds function so they can make changes that will help them feel their best.
What’s fun for Andrea: Pushing yourself beyond what you think are your limits and being successful (and safe)!
For me, that includes running, driving motorcycles, mountain biking, skiing, and hang gliding.

3) nutrition
4) exercise
Mantra #3: Incorporate genetic data to allow for customization of supplements, peptides and more precision interventions
Mantra #4: Look at the right data points before making a pharmaceutical intervention (our discussion on cholesterol and looking at 1) LDL particle number, 2) APO-B, which is a proxy for LDL particle number, and 3) Lp (a).
Mantra #5: Start early when it comes to precision medicine (Ryan recommended individuals in their early 20s); traditional panels could be catching symptoms over a decade too late
Mantra #6: Start with each individual’s goals for precision medicine (what is their “why”).

Mantra #1: The answer to the question, “how much money is enough money?” is NOT simply…”more”.
Mantra #2: Get in touch with the sensation of being satisfied (when you've had enough food to eat, when you feel good enough, etc.)
Mantra #3: Practice gratitude for the universe, self, and others to heal deep (subconscious) issues around money - likely developed during early childhood.
Mantra #4: There is an important intersection of wealth and health.
Mantra #5: There are three categories of life that you can't opt-out of: 1)health, 2) money and 3) relationships.
Mantra #6: There is no magic pill, modality or doctor that will “fix” your health; the key is listening to your body, having an ongoing conversation with it, to understand its needs
Mantra #7: Have patience. You can't rush your healing (note from Kathryn: a great song by Trevor Hall).
Mantra #8: Don't stop dreaming, while being content with the present moment.

In this episode, “play expert” Jeff Harry joins up with “fun expert” Dr. Kathryn Guylay for some actionable, transformational steps to a better year in 2021 and beyond.
Listen for this amazing quote that Jeff shares from Steven Johnson:
“You will find the future where people are having the most fun.”
We have seven mantras from the show, but first, a Warning: You can get exactly what you want, and not be happy.
Here are the seven mantras:
Mantra #1: To avoid the “I'll be happy when” syndrome, remember the quote: “expectations is the thief of joy”.
Mantra #2: Let go of expectations when they don't serve you (Jeff explains the paper airplane exercise he does with some clients).
Mantra #3: In every decision, we can claim Who We Are….Or try to (endlessly and needlessly) chase our worth.
Mantra #4: Increase your fun, joy, and play “index” through a review of your day, week, month, and year. (If your index needs a boost, use gratitude, appreciation, and curiosity to find more fun, joy, and play moving forward).
Mantra #5: Follow two steps to increase play right away: 1) self-soothe first (shower, music, walk, etc.), and then 2) get bored, then curious; get ready to meet your inner child!
Mantra #6: Leverage your own community of friends to find more play. Reach out to them and ask two questions: 1) what value do I bring to you and your life? and 2) when have you seen me most alive?
Mantra #7: Remember that every conversation is an option: do you choose a transaction or a transformation?
More about Jeff Harry
Jeff Harry shows individuals and companies how to tap into their true selves, to feel their happiest and most fulfilled — all by playing. Jeff has worked with Google, Microsoft, Southwest Airlines, Adobe, the NFL, Amazon, and Facebook, helping their staff to infuse more play into the day-to-day.
Jeff is an international speaker who has presented at conferences such as INBOUND, SXSW, and Australia’s Pausefest, showing audiences how major issues in the workplace can be solved using play. Jeff was selected by BambooHR & Engagedly as one of the Top 100 HR Influencers of 2020 for his organizational development work around dealing with toxic people in the workplace. His play work has most recently been featured in the NY Times article: How Do We Add More Play To Our Grown-Up Life - Even Now. He has also been featured on AJ+, SoulPancake, the SF Chronicle, and CNN.
While we spend most of our time pretending to be important, serious grownups, it's when we let go of that facade and just play, that the real magic happens. Fully embracing your own nerdy genius — whatever that is — gives you the power to make a difference and change lives. Jeff believes that we already have many of the answers we seek, and by simply unleashing our inner child, we can find our purpose and, in turn, help to create a better world.

As an author (Instinct, April 2021), founder and CEO of the 360-review mobile application, icueity, and highly sought-after professional speaker, Rebecca has found her calling in helping others recognize the power of biological applications in their lives. A former educator, Dr. Heiss spent much of her earlier career in the classroom at both the high school and college levels and was recruited to be a founding member of an innovative charter school with a focus on entrepreneurial thinking and impact-based learning.
Rebecca has been honored to speak internationally on her work, including multiple TEDx talks. Her “fear(less)” message inspires hope and actionable insights to train our brain to work for us, rather than against us in times of uncertainty. With surprising humor and palpable energy, no matter if Dr. Heiss is delivering virtually or on stage, she wins over audiences around the world with her interactive, inspiring, and timely takeaways. She lives in South Carolina with her spoiled rotten dog named Guinness, and every day tries to live her life motto: “spread happy”.

In this episode, we explore how to create deeper connections with our fellow human beings through Conscious Communication.
Our guest is Mary Shores, a transformational leader in the world of business and personal development.
We have nine mantras from the show:
Mantra #1: Shift the use of “should” to... “help me understand how to do this better”
Mantra #2: Our words cast “spells” (from the word “spelling”)
Mantra #3: The word Abracadabra means “I will create as I speak”
Mantra #4: Loneliness is the sickness of our time and results from a lack of communication and connection
Mantra #5: Communication and connection is about listening
Mantra #6: Deep listening happens in 3 steps: 1) validation, 2) planting a seed of happiness, and 3) suggesting can-do ideas or solutions
Mantra #7: Deep listening does not include the words “but” or “unfortunately”
Mantra #8: Do-not-say words include “no”, “not”, “can't,” and “however”
Mantra #9: Ask: how do you feel (about the elephant in the room)
More about Mary Shores
From Mary: BOLD - NO-NONSENSE - APPROACHABLE - TENACIOUS | When people think of me, those are the words I hope come to mind.
See, I have built a career and a business on the power of “Words That Work.” As such, I believe to my core that the words that fill your inner monologue as well as the words you choose to say have a profound impact on your life and the lives of others.
To provide some proof, here is a (condensed) timeline of the trajectory of my life:
♦ In 1998 I opened a debt collection agency, Midstate Collection Solutions. Despite rough personal circumstances, I harnessed the power of positive words and thinking to do this.
♦ In 2005 I overhauled my business model around my proprietary “Words That Work” method and a commitment to making those in debt happier at the end of a call with Midstate than they were at the beginning.
♦ The makeover worked and soon I shifted my focus to changing the debt collection industry as a whole. I began traveling and sharing the “Words That Work” method with businesses all over the country.
♦ I realized that words have the power to change not only businesses, but also people at their core and I set out to help others.
♦ In 2015 I authored and published a best-selling book with Hay House, “Conscious Communications: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Harnessing the Power of Your Words to Change Your Mind, Your Choices, and Your Life.”
♦ After the success of the book, requests to speak, and professional development industry involvement, I launched The Mary Shores Brand, which aims to share what I have learned through various mediums including speaking engagements, workshops, retreats, podcasts, books, and more.
Today, I concurrently run the Midstate Collection Solutions business while also building The Mary Shores Brand. I LOVE what I do and get to do it because of the words I choose to say to myself and project to others.

In this episode, we explore what is going on with our health care system. Increasing costs. Hidden prices. Frustrated patients and providers.
We discuss the possibility that health care costs are stealing away the American dream.
Our guest is Dave Chase. Dave leads the vision for Health Rosetta -which is to empower community-owned health plans.
We have five mantras from the show:
Mantra #1: Get empowered as a consumer in this irrational and overwhelming healthcare industry.
Mantra #2: Consider cash pay for medical procedures as the cost may be less than going through insurance.
Mantra #3: Employers can get better results for lower prices by working with the right advisors.
Mantra #4: Don’t pay cadillac prices for a “pinto” product/service.
Mantra #5: Go LOCAL:
Learn how to be liberated from the status quo
Optimize health plan infrastructure
Carve our Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM)
Add value-based primary care
Leave behind value extracting PPO networks
Interesting data points from the interview:
1. Healthcare itself isn't expensive (clinicians only receive $0.27 of every $1 ostensibly spent on healthcare). What's expensive is profiteering, price-gouging, and misaligned incentives
Business owners can spend 20-40% of current spending on health benefits and get superior health outcomes by following a more “grassroots” approach (see LOCAL, above).
COVID-19 is accelerating the process of health being relocalized, similar to how the local/healthy food movement greatly improved the health of families and the livelihoods of farmers.
More about Dave Chase
Chase leads the vision for Health Rosetta which is to empower community-owned health plans. Health Rosetta’s blueprint and platform powers the health plans of your dreams: high quality, trustworthy, local, affordable care -- that you thought had disappeared forever -- from caregivers we know & trust. We free up compassionate, well-trained, community-based caregivers to rediscover love in medicine so they can do what they have always been called to do: serve their patients not just in disease, but toward their fullest health. A trusted & sacred caregiver-patient bond is built through transparency & openness that equips and empowers patients wherever they can best achieve their unique health goals -- at home or any setting best optimizing their well-being. By avoiding the 50% wasted healthcare spending, we can ensure our caregivers have the independence & resources to address the psychosocial and medical issues their patients face. Human-centered health plans restore health, hope & well-being.
Through best-selling books & The Resident (on FOX), where Chase serves as a consultant, collateral damage from the Extractive Era of healthcare is highlighted as well as the tremendous successes & opportunities with Health Rosetta-type health plans. The books, writing for various media outlets, TED talk and TV/film have reached over 10 million people with the goal of informing, enraging, empowering and activating a broad grassroots movement designed to restore hope, health & well-being to our communities. Chase received the Health Value Awards' Lifetime Achievement for Health Benefits Innovation at the 2020 World Health Care Congress.
Chase co-founded Avado which was acquired by & integrated into WebMD/Medscape and founded Microsoft's $2B, 28,000 partner healthcare ecosystem.
Outside of work, Chase is an oxygen-fueled mountain athlete and volunteer high school track & cross country coach. Once upon a time, Chase was a PAC-12 800 Meter & 4x400 competitor. Most importantly, devotion to faith, family and friends underpin a desire to be a servant leader to the 4 million lives (& growing) stewarded through the Health Rosetta community.

Mantra #4: A conscious wellness business is about solving a key problem for a consumer and creating a transformation for them in their lives.
Mantra #5: The most important word in marketing is “you”.
Mantra #6: Conscious wellness businesses walk the talk. Christian shares how Vessel supports their employees with daily meditation and other wellness and spiritual practices.

Mantra #1: Sometimes our efforts to help/heal ourselves can blossom into a professional development project.
Mantra #2: There are many opportunities for trauma outside of the actual birth process.
Mantra #3: No human being is exempt from trauma
Mantra #4: The definition of birth trauma is not limited to the mom or the infant (partners, healthcare practitioners and other players can be involved)
Mantra #5: Intrusive thoughts cannot be healed through wishing them to go away.
Mantra #6: A gift of Brainspotting is that it can take the trigger out of a negative story.
Mantra #7: Physical isolation does not have to mean social isolation (specific to the COVID19 pandemic).

In this special episode, we talk with the developer of Brainspotting, Dr. David Grand.
David and I connect during one of the difficult weeks of COVID19, with David calling in from his make-shift office on Long Island given the serious outbreak in New York City.
The community from which I broadcast (Sun Valley, Idaho) was also experiencing great stress given a rapid spread of the virus. You can read more about how COVID19 hit mountain towns hard here:

Here are the sixteen mantras from this episode:
Mantra #1: Time distortion is due to being in the subcortex of the brain.
Mantra #2: During this period of existential trauma, we may experience states such as dissociation, shut down, denial, and hyper-hyper vigilance.
Mantra #3: This existential trauma presses on the underlying traumas we are still processing from our childhoods.
Mantra #4: This is not the time to make big decisions.
Mantra #5: This is, however, a time to set your priorities. We are being forced to evaluate what is important and what is not important.
Mantra #6: We must slow down, be curious, and observe.
Mantra #7: We are safe in the present moment; we must bring ourselves back from ruminations about the past and worries about the future and focus on the here and now.
Mantra #8: In the present moment, allow uncertainty, be curious, and mindfully pay attention.
Mantra #9: If not now, when?
Mantra #10: A karmic “pause button” has been hit.
Mantra #11: In adversity, there is opportunity.
Mantra #12: Distractions are a good thing. Embrace hobbies, movies, cleaning, cooking, any other activity that focuses your attention. I will be out in the garden with my hubby this weekend:
https://makeeverythingfun.com/top-reasons-garden-kids-spring/
Mantra #13: Stop and observe the majesty of nature
Mantra #14: Be generous to yourself
Mantra #15: Be generous to others
Mantra #16: We are in a major “reset” period as a paradigm shift occurs in the world. A foundational principle of Brainspotting, the Uncertainty principle, offers guidance on how we can move as gracefully as possible through this challenging period.

Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more.
Our guest, Deb Antinori, discusses the neuroscience involved in our reactions to the COVID19 crisis.
Here are the five mantras from this episode:
Mantra #1: Be gentle with yourself
Mantra #2: We are in a state of existential trauma
Mantra #3: The COVID19 disruption affects where we function in terms of the three parts of the brain (survival, homeostasis, restoration). These brain parts interact with the HPA axis and affect cortisol levels. Cortisol levels can affect the hippocampus and thus memory. So if you are not feeling at the top of your game mentally right now, there is a neuroscientific explanation. Return to Mantra #1 and Be gentle with yourself.
Mantra #4: Learn to calm your alarm states during the COVID19 crisis. (Refer to healing techniques and the need for contemplative states in this interview with Dr. Mario Martinez: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUOGxJ97gkI&t=464s).
Mantra #5: Our assumptive world has been turned on its head. It is normal to feel the need to grieve the loss of this known world.

In this episode, we continue our exploration of the application of the Brainspotting modality.
Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more.
Our guest, Dr. Roby Abeles, discusses addiction and how the brain is wired for reward.
She discusses some amazing processes that allow for overcoming addiction.
We also explore post-addiction/post-trauma growth. We discuss how we can become better human beings as a result of positive post-addiction growth.
Here are the six mantras from this episode:
Mantra #1: There is no such thing as a perfect childhood (it is all about a spectrum of experiences).
Mantra #2: You can bounce back from just about anything (and it is easier and can be more fully integrated with support from others).
Mantra #3: The student can become the teacher.
Mantra #4: You can be so much more helpful to others when you can be vulnerable and authentic.
Mantra #5: When a person is feeling an addiction, their brain cannot neurologically connect (between the deeper reward centers of the brain) to the consequences of that addiction.
Mantra #6: Given that addiction is a result of a lack of neural pathways in the brain (not a person having negative characteristics like a “lack of control”) we must work to remove shame around addiction in our society.
Mantra #7: The brain is wired for reward.
Mantra #8: Brainspotting can create new neural pathways in the brain to help people overcome addiction.
Mantra #9: A healing journey can be seen along the same lines as the Hero’s journey (see Joseph Campbell’s 17 stages of the Hero’s journey).
Mantra #10: When it comes to healing, including Brainspotting sessions, the most important person in the room is the client.
More about Dr. Roby Abeles
Dr. Roby Abeles is an accomplished integrative, somatic neuro-psychotherapist, with over 34 years of experience in diverse clinical, academic, government, and human services environments in Australia and the USA.
Dr. Abeles knows the complexities of addiction through her own personal journey which began in utero. She was prescribed tranquilizers and anticonvulsants from ages 2-12, and by then she had already become addicted to several other substances.
She is a survivor of several sexual and physical assaults during the active phase of her addictions. She entered rehab in 1985 and has been clean and sober ever since.
Dr. Roby received her early addiction treatment training at the Betty Ford Center in California. She soon learned that addiction is always pre-dated by overwhelming life experiences. We are often not able to identify these experiences as “trauma”. And we were not able to process and integrate these experiences when they occurred.
Dr. Roby’s own life experiences led her to a life-long study of trauma and addiction which continues today. She has co-developed the MATES Brain Regulation Program. ‘MATES’ is a simple and easy program to help people learn easy self-regulation techniques so they have alternatives to self-soothing with ritualized, compulsive (addictive) behaviors.
She has also been trained in the revolutionary 21st Century brain-based Brainspotting (BSP) therapy and is an international trainer. Based on neuroscience, she developed a way to stop addiction cravings using a BSP technique called the “Crocodile Set Up”, and most recently has developed “The Hero’s Journey” BSP Set Up to transform adversity into a personal story of not just survival, but heroism.
Dr. Roby Incorporates mind, body, and spirit into all her therapeutic work and teaching by combining Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, Spiritual Psychology, Narrative therapy, and Ego State therapy, to ensure all levels of client experience are truly resolved and integrated so they can have a clear path forward.

In this episode, we continue our exploration of the application of the Brainspotting modality.
Our guest, Dr. Melanie Young, discusses brain injuries, symptoms, and interventions.
We are left with a sense of hope that, through collaborative efforts provided by what we refer to as “allied providers”, people who have experienced brain injuries can successfully heal.
Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more.
Here are the six mantras from this episode:
Mantra #1: Head injuries are often invisible (unable to be seen on the scans).
Mantra #2: (If symptoms persist or get worse), don’t wait too long to see out further information, such as neuropsychology testing.
Mantra #3: People who have experienced brain injury need extra support (at home, at school, at work).
Mantra #4: Watch for problematic symptoms such as withdrawal, apathy, low mood, irritability, etc.
Mantra #5: Neuroplasticity offers hope to anyone who has suffered from a brain injury (see Dr. Norman Doige’s The Brain that Changes Itself).
Mantra #6: Brainspotting (and other modalities offered by “allied practitioners” does not promise “miracles” but it does offer a new better normal for the person who has experienced a brain injury.

In this episode, we continue our exploration of the application of the Brainspotting modality. Our guest, Cynthia Schwartzberg, discusses the history of Brainspotting and how she discovered it through her work in Core Energetics.
Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more.
Here are the seven mantras from this episode:
Mantra #1: There is something special about the eyes when it comes to brain-body connection and healing. (See below for more information about how the eyes are part of the central nervous system, developing from the neural tube in the human fetus in utero).
Mantra #2: Relationships create the foundations of healing.
Mantra #3: We can create our own reality (Brainspotting provides opportunities to separate the past from the present and future).
Mantra #4: Brainspotting can assist with self-acceptance (a key element in creating our optimal reality).
Mantra #5: Brainspotting can also assist us in discovering talents.
Mantra #6: Uncertainty is key to allowing “ah-ha” moments to arise.
Mantra #7: Everything is energy.
Cynthia also provided listeners with a great “recipe” for creating your best reality (to great for the new year!).
-Set an intention
-Know its possible
-Create awareness of obstacles (what might be in the way, including limiting beliefs)
-Use methodologies such as Brainspotting to remove obstacles
Love it!
Notes about Mantra #1
I want to give credit here to Dr. Peggy Mason, Ph.D. I am taking her course at the University of Chicago called Understanding the Brain: The Neurobiology of Everyday Life.
In one of the recent lessons, Dr. Mason explained how the neural tube creates the entire central nervous system from the spinal cord to the brain. At about three weeks of age of the fetus, the neural tube is in a vesicular stage when it is differentiating into the spinal cord, the hindbrain, the midbrain, and the forebrain.
The forebrain then differentiates into two vesicles called the diencephalon and the telencephalon. The diencephalon becomes the thalamus and the hypothalamus. The telencephalon becomes the cerebral cortex, the core parts of the basal ganglia, the amygdala, and a few other structures.
The diencephalon, which ends up inside telencephalon as the cerebral cortex grows, has an outpouching that becomes the optic nerve and the retina.
Here I’m going to quote Dr. Mason:
“Why is that amazing? Because what you have is an accessible piece of the central nervous system. This is the central nervous system, it comes from the diencephalon, it is continuous with the diencephalon. Here's the diencephalon, and here's the optic nerve, here's the retina. It's all contains within the same meninges. It's all surrounded by CSF. So it's one that means that when you look into somebody's eye you're looking into the central nervous system. You're not looking to the brain. But it's a window on the brain…”
Cool.

In this episode, we continue our exploration of the application of the Brainspotting modality. Our guest, Cherie Lindberg, discusses an application of Brainspotting she is developing called BSP-CC (Brainspotting for Co-regulating Couples).
We discuss Cherie’s cutting edge research in this area and how she is building upon the work of others to create ways to increase our ability to create and sustain loving and connected relationships.
Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more.
Here are the seven mantras from this episode:
Mantra #1: BSP-CC Is a combination of four main ingredients: 1) Brainspotting, 2) Imago relationship therapy, 3) attachment theory, and 4) polyvagal theory. Cherie tips her hat to leaders of each of these modalities/theories respectively: Dr. David Grand, Harville Hendrix, Dr. Dan Siegel, and Dr. Stephen Porges. There are countless other contributors to work in these areas, including John Bowlby (attachment styles), W. Winnicott (good-enough parent), Dr. Sue Johnson (Emotionally Focused Therapy), and many others.
Mantra #2: Trust is the result of a process or cycle as follows. Need => Arousal => Gratification => Trust
Mantra #3: To regulate and co-regulate, don't get stuck in the “story” (because the stories we tell ourselves are often negative)
Mantra #4: The BSP-CC process requires risk and vulnerability (Cherie mention’s the work of Dr. Brene Brown and how she has termed vulnerability as the new superpower).
Mantra #5: Brainspotting is the way to clear out the dysregulation from the “downstairs brain”.
Mantra #6: Personal growth and Improvement starts with awareness
Mantra #7: Improvement continues with communication skills including presence, listening, summarizing, validating, empathy, and the WAIT (Why Am I Talking) technique.

Mantra #1: Abundance is both quantifiable and non-quantifiable; both are important to happiness in life
Mantra #2: Set your goals with a focus on mindset
Mantra #3: Recognize that mindset goals might have to do with overcoming generational issues (not just what you’ve experienced in your own lifetime)
Mantra #4: Limiting beliefs can be at an ancestral level (and they can be overcome through modalities such as Brainspotting which address the mind-body system)
Question 1: Write down your biggest fear
Question 2: Notice what symptoms you have suffered since childhood.

Mantra #2: Brainspotting can be used to identify a “future self” to envision an optimal life through multi-sensory perception. Double spotting is another technique within the modality that allows for the processing of the transformation between “current self” and “ideal/future self”.
Mantra #3: Neuro-coaching is about working with the nervous system to meet goals and objectives including creativity, overcoming limiting beliefs, and expanding performance.
Mantra #4: Bilateral stimulation works as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system so that we can self-regulate and perhaps even integrate memories.
Mantra #5: There are “Brainspots” (fixed eye positions that correlate to neurological pathways) all around us. With our brain containing a quadrillion connections, “brainspots” can be considered within a 3-dimensional, 360-degree framework.

The mantras from this episode:
Mantra #1: Brainspotting incorporates a powerful formula which includes a) bio-lateral music, b) an issue identified by the client to explore, c) somatic location of that issue (in other words, where is that issue felt in the body?), d) focused mindfulness, based on the location of the fixed eye location, e) curiosity and f) space held between the practitioner and client so that the client can process the issue.
Mantra #2: Sometimes there are simply no words to explain feelings (a powerful aspect of Brainspotting is that talking is not necessarily required).
Mantra #3: Brainspotting is different for everyone (and is different every time); there is no set protocol.
Mantra #4: You can support someone going through a difficult time simply by being present.
Mantra #5: When supporting someone going through a difficult time, it is always best to ask for permission (to tell a story, to offer a hug, to offer any information)
Mantra #6: When supporting something going through a difficult time, know that it is about them, not about you.

There are NINE mantras for this show. They are:
1. Being a “yoga superstar” is a bit of an oxymoron (yoga is for every-body).
2. Yoga is about I'm doing rather than doing.
3. A major benefit of yoga is being connected to one's authentic self.
4. Finally - a message about getting unstuck: “don't calcify the conversation, listen”.
5. We all need to be heard, seen, and hopefully understood (listen to others).
6. We need to see ourselves, listen to ourselves, and hopefully understand ourselves (listen to self).
7. Breathing can create physical, spiritual, and mental healing.
8. We are all radio stations broadcasting a signal; what vibrational seeds do you want to germinate?

In this episode, I have Paige Roberts back as a repeat guest on brain wellness, this time to focus on QEEG assessments and interventions such as photobiomodulation to improve brain health.
This interview is part of a series of interviews that I've been doing a modality called Brainspotting (a modality that I'm frankly obsessed with and now certified in). Paige’s first interview was Episode 66 on this podcast.
For more information about Brainspotting, please see www.brainspotting.com. Brainspotting is the work of Dr. David Grand.
For more information about Paige see below.
The mantras from the episode are as follows:
Mantra #1: Performance Wellness coaching is about empowering you, not scaring you.
Mantra #2: QEEG testing/results can be a positive incentive to start or boost interventions to improve brain health.
Mantra #3: QEEG can potentially connect us to the universe (Paige discusses how brain waves align with the frequencies of planets in our solar system).
Mantra #4: Interventions that can be healing to the brain include: 1) earthing, 2) drinking more water, 3) better nutrition, 4) movement, 5) proper sleep, 6) protection from/reduction of exposure to EMFs, and 7) photobiomodulation.
Mantra #5: Photobiomodulation seems like magic, but it is science. See this study about the effect of photo bio modulation on Veterans with TBIs.

Episode Title: Bust Through Your Money Blocks with Brainspotting and Beth Medina
In this episode, you’ll learn how limiting beliefs around money, both obvious and subtle, could be sabotaging your ability to create abundance in your life.
This interview is part of a series of interviews that I've been doing a modality called Brainspotting (a modality that I'm frankly obsessed with and now certified in).
For more information about Brainspotting, please see www.brainspotting.com. Brainspotting is the work of Dr. David Grand.
For more information about Beth Medina see below.
The mantras from the episode are as follows:
Mantra #1: We have some whacky beliefs about money. These whacky macro believes include cultural sayings such as:
“money is the root of all evil”
“money doesn't grow on trees
“money is hard work”
“money causes strife”, and
“I have to save everything I earn”.
Mantra #2: Some of our beliefs about money are actually quite deep and subtle. Examples of some of these subtle beliefs include:
“I'm not worth it”
“charging more is selfish”
“Who am I to charge so much for my products or services?”
“people won't pay that much”.
Mantra #3: Overcoming these blocks is a tactical as well as psycho-therapeutic process when using Brainspotting.
Mantra #4: Money blocks may need to be worked through as a team (for example a partner, spouse, etc.).
Mantra #5: Brainspotting has what Beth called “a music effect”. You might need to listen to a song many times over, but once you hear the lyrics, you can never change the way you hear the song. People have “aha” moments during a Brainspotting session that allows them to see the world differently.

In this episode, you’ll learn how Brainspotting allows for incredible breakthroughs to peace and peak performance for both athletes (specifically gymnasts) and first responders.
For more information about Brainspotting, please see www.brainspotting.com. Brainspotting is the work of Dr. David Grand.
What do these populations ( gymnastics and First Responders) have in common? They both train in the context of great risk.
You'll learn some amazing tips and hear stories of healing from Brainspotting practitioner Jessica Crowley.
The mantras from the episode are as follows:
Mantra #1: Obstacles don't always result from a first-hand experience; secondary trauma is an important consideration for both peak performance and healing.
Mantra #2: We are not always aware of the underlying causes of our obstacles/ “stuck” feelings, which leads to….
Mantra #3: The Brainspotting process is not always linear; Brainspotting follows the “uncertainty principle” first proposed by Quantum physicist Heisenberg.
Mantra #4: Whether it is an athlete or a first responder, the “healee” has a very important and active role in the healing process (healing is not the “doing” of the practitioner)
Mantra #5: In Brainspotting, verbalizing the content is not necessary; the “talking cure” has its place in mental wellness, but you don't necessarily have to talk to process and heal

This episode focuses on the power of brain-body healing using the powerful techniques of Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, and Brainspotting. With our guest, Santiago Brand, we talk about how individuals can become the best versions of themselves by committing to a healing process and confirming their own belief that they can improve their brain/body wellness.
The mantras from the episode are as follows:
Mantra #1: Stress is primarily psychological and anticipatory; it then manifests physiologically.
Mantra #2: Biofeedback is a preventative modality. It provides a mirror to the mind and body so that we can fix things that are out of order/not serving us before they show up as serious physical conditions.
Mantra #3: The metaphor of “sweaty palms” has a much deeper meaning than we might think at first glance. (We discuss GSR, or Galvanic Skin Response). The sweat glands are connected to the brain, which is connected to the gut. Our mind-body system is inter-related. Which leads us to…
Mantra #4: “What is in the brain is in the body, and what is in the body is in the brain” (a quote by Dr. David Grand, the founder of Brainspotting). www.brainspotting.com
Mantra #5: It is okay to not be okay. We need to accept our humanity (which means that life, and indeed trauma, happens to us as human beings). Trauma can range from a difficult dentist visit to a car accident to financial difficulties to relationship challenges and many things in between. Brainspotting is an excellent modality to address trauma in a gentle and healing way.
Mantra #6: The goal is to commit to brain/body healing in order to increase flexibility and resilience. Santiago talks about his work with a case example combining breathing techniques/biofeedback, neurofeedback, Brainspotting and functional medicine (diet, supplements, etc.), all supported by a firm client belief that positive change is possible, to realize extraordinary results in body/brain healing.

This episode focuses on the power of combining the cutting edge modalities of Brainspotting and EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique) to allow clients to work through obstacle
Mantra #1: “We don’t have to know what it is, to know that it is”. This is actually a quote from one of the slides from the Brainspotting training (Phase One). Brainspotting also follows the principle of uncertainty which means that the brainspotter must not assume what is going on with the client or where the session will go. So much can happen without us needing to understand the details of it.
Mantra #2: We don’t have to suffer. With noninvasive and relatively gentle modalities such as Brainspotting and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
Mantra #3: Progress can be fast (it doesn’t have to take long). Jenn describes some client stories where she has seen people shift in just one session
Mantra #4: In order to get to the “gold” (or the “glory” as referred to in the episode title), sometimes you have to get the “gunk” out of the way. (This metaphor reminds me of the story of the Golden Buddha), https://carolyntate.co/the-story-of-the-golden-buddha/
Jenn described it as unclogging the gunk in the sink drain. Modalities such as Brainspotting and EFT allow clients to break free from the gunk! And why should we bother to go through the “gunk removal process” through modalities such as Brainspotting and EFT?
-Save time and money
-Stop having to go to ongoing therapy
-Don’t get sick (books like “The Body Keeps the Score” talk about how unresolved emotional issues are the drivers for many of our ailments
-Realize peak performance and be the best version of yourself

Today’s guest for the Mountain Mantras Podcast is Jennie Aguirre. After working for 16 years in the medical field as a nurse and case manager, Jennie unexpectedly switched gears and became a stay-at-home mom. Convinced motherhood, especially single-motherhood, would never be a part of her plan, this was a surprising and life-changing role she was tossed into quite abruptly. Being someone who never does anything half-effort, Jennie committed herself to her new title of “mom” tenaciously. She went to all the classes, read all the books, and got all the t-shirts. What she found; however, was that none of it mattered. If this was going to be successful, she needed to dive deep into HERSELF.
