Kent talks to Jaime Imhof, a dual donor double transplant recipient. In June 2022 she was rushed to the hospital raging with multiple infections and organ failure. and was given a 10% chance of survival. Jamie needed a liver transplant first to survive, breaking the six-month sobriety rule in a groundbreaking program led by Johns Hopkins Hospital. After that, she also required a kidney transplant as well due to acute kidney injury and failure from Hepatorenal Syndrome and Tacrolimus. She is 14 months post liver transplant and 7 months post kidney transplant.

Rachel is a non-directed liver donor, donating the right lobe of her liver in January of 2022. Hannah Graves is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Attending school in the community, Hannah found her calling in psychology and pursued the direction of a well-placed guidance counselor to pursue social work. After graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Hannah decided to attend Graduate School for Social Work at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee at the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. While here, Hannah met influential professors and mentors who guided her career path. After graduating in 2011 with her Master’s Degree in Social Work, Hannah began working for United Way of Greater Milwaukee. Life called Hannah to Atlanta, GA in 2013 where she completed some odds-and-ends jobs in support of her personal relationship with her now husband. Working in hospice, short-term rehab, and then finally dialysis from 2016 to 2019 afforded opportunities to learn and advocate for the best quality of life for patients living with End Stage Renal Disease. Now in 2023, Hannah has the greatest opportunity of to work with both Apex Health Innovations, a global healthcare technology company, and Piedmont Transplant Institute to truly support patients through their transplant journey. Hannah currently lives in Marietta, Georgia with her husband, daughter, and their four cats.

Kent talks with Emmitt Henderson III the CEO of Male Lupus Warriors. He talks of the difficulties dealing with Lupus and its multiple medical issues that occur. Originally transplanted only to lose the kidney to complications. He talks about his corporation “Male Lupus Warriors” developed to spread Lupus and Mental Health awareness to all who will listen. Emmitt Henderson III was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus and Lupus Nephritis in 1995 but had symptoms going back to 1980.
Through the years, he has endured major complications from heart, liver, kidneys, and lung failures, and avascular necrosis that led to a shoulder and knee replacement. He had a clinical trial, a bone marrow stem cell transplant; he was on oxygen due to his lung failure and had a kidney transplant due to kidney failure and brain disease. He was also diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjogren's Syndrome, and MTCD as well as suffering from a stroke, shingles, gout, chronic fevers, diabetes, and hypertension. In 2019, when Emmitt was diagnosed with brain disease, it medically retired from his career. He decided to advocate for the same disease that debilitated him since 1995 and to talk about how his mental health got him through it all. He created his organization called Male Lupus Warriors Corp to spread Lupus and Mental Health awareness. He holds a safe space for men to meet and talk about their hardships in life, he encourages everyone to not be a victim to their illness. Emmitt did an advocacy campaign in Tanzania Africa in 2022 which included climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. During his climb, he suffered high-altitude pulmonary edema and ended up going into kidney failure for the second time in his life. He is now currently doing home hemodialysis and is on the transplant list for another kidney. As well as being a kidney transplant recipient, Weston is also a qualified mediator who teaches preparation for mediation as well as conducting mediations for The Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center and privately. He attended Texas A&M Kingsville University on a football scholarship and then Houston Baptist University to pursue more educational avenues. Growing up in a Lutheran private school, as well as growing up in the culturally diverse area of Houston Texas, he has a background where he has encountered all walks of life. He uses that experience so that he can write many of the characters that he creates to give life to his novels. Weston L. Collins cares about the readers through his actions and to make sure that people are represented in his books accurately.
Weston is married to his wife Mrs. Jaclyn Collins and lives in the great state of Texas. He is a part of the Kidney Solutions family since his transplant back in February of 2022, and looks to also bring a voice to kidney patients through his art, efforts in the community, and the world at large.

Kent talks with Brian K. Runge, RN, BSN, CCTC. Brian is the Chief Living Donor Transplant Coordinator for New-York Presbyterian Columbia Irving Medical Center.
Brian was born in Chicago and at the age of 6 moved with his family onto a sailboat and circumnavigated the globe from the age of 6 to 13. During that time, Brian was homeschooled. Once back in the United States he went through high school and college. He received his BSN at the University of Florida. Brian started his nursing career as a Level 1 Trauma ICU Nurse at Shands Hospital and just so happened to take care of fresh post-op liver, kidney and pancreas transplant patients among many other types of patients. Little did he know his career path was leading him to transplant. Brian moved to New York in late 2006 as a travel nurse and took some assignments at NYP Cornell and Columbia ICU’s. He has been working in Transplant with NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia Irving Medical Center for the last 13 and a half years. Brian started as a Recipient Transplant Coordinator until he was promoted to the chief position of the donor team in late 2018. He has been doing that ever since.

Shane Blanchard was born at the University of Iowa in 1974. He was diagnosed with Eagle-Barrett Syndrome, commonly known as Prune Belly Syndrome, a rare congenital disorder. He has undergone 50 operations including three kidney transplants. His first at the age of 21 lasted 24 years. His second from his brother lasted only a month. He just received his third transplant via a paired exchange program. He never gave up.

After she finished medical school, Sejal Patel learned she needed a new kidney and pancreas to survive. Welcome back! In today’s episode, Kent speaks with AAKP’s Ambassador, Gail Glasser. We join in celebrating Gail's 5 year Kidney Transplant Anniversary! Gail has lived with kidney disease since she was 18 years old when an undiagnosed strep throat impacted her kidney. Gail's nephrologist was ahead of his time and believed in a treatment plan that was supplemented with specific diets and vitamins. This made it possible for Gail to go 30+ years without requiring dialysis or a transplant. She ultimately received her kidney transplant in November 2015 from a deceased donor and has since been actively involved in awareness building for kidney patients. In addition to her business, Gail works actively with kidney transplant patients to ensure they feel as though they have the tools necessary to take control and live healthy, long lives.

Welcome back! In today’s episode, Kent speaks with Edward Drake, II. “Why me?” Ed asked himself when he was suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with renal failure at age 20. Then he asked himself “Why not me?” This prompted him to use his negative experience in a positive way—to spread the word that while it is true certain people are at an increased risk, kidney disease can happen to anyone, at any time, and that’s why it’s so important to get checked early.
Edward received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor in October of 2008, and continues to spread the word about organ donation and early detection through his own charity, the YNOTT? Foundation (Youth Needing Organ & Tissue Transplants), and as a field ambassador for the American Association of Kidney Patients. He frequently visits kidney disease and dialysis patients of all ages, especially young ones like him, mentoring and comforting them with his own story and positive outcome. He also advocates for policies that improve the lives and treatments of those with kidney disease and expand patient choices.

Welcome back! In today’s episode, Kent speaks with AAKP’s Ambassador, AAKP Ambassador Jennifer Jones. A retired Marine Veteran Jennifer’s life changed drastically in a matter of months due to kidney disease. Her kidneys began to fail while deployed to Afghanistan which resulted in immediate medical evacuation to Germany to receive a diagnosis of Nephrotic Syndrome. Upon returning to the states, she was immediately admitted as a patient at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. After months of testing and multiple medications, she was diagnosed with Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (MPGN) shortly after her 28th birthday. The cause is unknown and there is very limited information on MPGN Type 1 Idiopathic. Jennifer was medically retired after almost 12 years of service as a Combat Camera Videographer including 3 tours to Iraq and the 1 to Afghanistan which ended her career. Facing physical and mental challenges while living alone with limited assistance from friends and family caused isolation, depression, and even suicidal ideations. She knew that she had to make a decision, is she going to become her own advocate in order to take charge of her health and well-being, or is she going to give up and succumb to this disease?
Jennifer is an incredibly inspirational person and provides some great insights throughout the episode.

In 2005, Jonas took early retirement from Eastman Kodak to return home to help care for his 81-year-old, ill mother. He returned to school and earned his doctorate degree in Theology. He is currently a Minister in his church. Dr. Gadson is also very active with his area Chamber of Commerce where he completed their Leadership Class. He serves as a national advocate for the facility where he received dialysis, representing patients like himself who are seeking to live full and productive lives while fighting kidney disease.

Welcome back! In today’s episode, Kent speaks the Colm Clifford. Colm is a three-time kidney transplant recipient. Born with only one functioning kidney, Colm suffered reflux as a child which damaged this kidney. He went on CAPD at the age of 11 and was transplanted in March 1990, which was not a success as the kidney never functioned. In November 1990, he received his second transplant which gave him a great quality of life for over 22 years. He found himself back on dialysis (CAPD) for two and a half years but due to complications had to move to hemodialysis for a year and a half until his recent transplant in March 2017.
For over 20 years, ironically, Colm works for a pharmaceutical company which produces the immunosuppressant he currently takes. He is actively involved in the Kerry Branch of the Irish Kidney Association and has recently set up a patient support group meeting for people on a similar journey. His passion is to promote awareness and educate people on the importance of organ donation through one-on-one talks and group talks in schools and communities.

Welcome back! In this week’s episode, Kent interviews his good friend, James Myers. Uncle Jim received the Richard J. Salick award winner. He was awarded this great honor in 2019. This prestigious award is presented an individual who embodies the spirit of NKF’s dear friend, Rich Salick, a former pro surfer who underwent three kidney transplants, faced cancer, but still put the needs of other kidney patients ahead of his own.
After being on Dialysis for 4 years, Jim received his Kidney Transplant on April 27, 2016. He is a Kidney Advocate and very active on Social Media, sharing stories of those in need of a Kidney Donor and other news revolving around Kidney Disease/Transplants. Jim also has a Blog on the Nation Kidney Foundation website.
