About Brittany: My name is Brittany Mouttet and I'm a first-generation American on my father's side. I was born and raised in Corpus Christi and have always loved everything about this city. I attended TAMUCC where I earned my BS in Biology. After graduating I immediately started working for the City of Corpus Christi Water Department as a Laboratory Technician. Today I am the Senior Project Manager for the O.N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant, the ONLY drinking water plant that serves Corpus Christi!
In 2017 I had my first and only son Saint, and my pregnancy and experience as a new mom led to my starting a podcast called Leading Ladies of Corpus Christi in January 2018. The podcast is focused on highlighting local women making a difference in the community. These women need to be recognized for the amazing things they're doing and creating, and my podcast provides a platform for them to share their stories.

Her inspirational, power-packed delivery leaves her audience in awe.
Whether she is sitting across from a friend offering encouragement and support, leading a workshop or seminar, or captivating an audience on the stage, Belkis’ impact and power resonate with audiences all around the globe. Her experiences are abundant and extensive. Her accomplishments are diverse, resulting in her ability to relate to a wide range of audiences.
She works tirelessly helping women worldwide who have lived through trauma identify what holds them back and how they can break free, learn the art of effective communication, and unleash their unique gifts. A survivor of sexual abuse, Belkis has risen from a place of attempted suicide to success. For more than a decade, she has been captivating, inspiring, motivating, and teaching audiences, including survivors of sexual abuse and trauma, how to love themselves, identify their value, build their self-confidence, make better choices and map their purpose as they journey to legendary transformation.
Belkis was born on the island of St. Kitts. Her mother and stepfather moved to St. Maarten in pursuit of a better life for the family. From her grandmother and her parents, she learned values such as hard work, tenacity, resilience, discipline, and commitment. Belkis applied these to her life and eventually attended the University of the Southern Caribbean, graduating summa cum laude and the top student with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in communication. She was offered a full scholarship and went on to get her master’s in Human Communication. On the heels of graduating Valedictorian, Belkis realized that her destiny was to be a speaker and coach, empowering others to become their best selves, live meaningful lives, and be truly happy. She has taught at every level, from Pre-k to University, and brings that dedication to the stage and online.
Belkis has spent more than a decade teaching and coaching suicidal and depressed teens and adults. She has been teaching men and women how to get back on their feet after a divorce, heartbreaks, disappointments, and trauma and live a life they are happy to step into every day. She helps people to find their position in God and see themselves from His perspective. Belkis has authored “Girl, You Are Overthinking It!” co-authored “Tying the Knot Between Ministry and the Market Place, (Volume 2).
Her writing and her story have been featured on the international Red Cross website, local media in the Dutch Antilles, Thrive global, Heiden magazine, Authority Magazine, Be Your Own, and she has been on several podcasts such Is She's Making an Impact, The Pitchtank, and The Authentic Courage series, among others. Belkis is known for being able to bring messages that leave lives transformed and audiences inspired and on fire. A sought-after speaker, she has spoken to audiences ranging from corporate, non-profit, personal development seminars and workshops to audiences across the United States, Central America, Canada, and the Caribbean. Kandice was born and raised in Texas and is the daughter of a psychologist and a teacher, so education and mental health run deep within her soul.
Kandice received a BS in Elementary Education from Texas Christian University and an MS in Counseling from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Kandice has been an elementary school teacher and counselor, adjunct professor in psychology, and counselor at Del Mar College, and is currently a school administrator. Kandice has a private practice where she specializes in anxiety, couples counseling, and recovering from trauma/grief and loss.
Kandice has two grown children and loves her dogs and cats. Kandice enjoys the beach, reading, cooking, and traveling. She believes that having a positive attitude and actively seeking positive experiences, maintaining a self-care routine, and having close family and friends is her key to maintaining a life that brings her joy.

Ashley Arevalo is a menstrual equity activist from Corpus Christi, Texas.
She got her start in menstrual equity when she started a Go Fund Me in November of 2016 to raise money to donate products to shelters. Since then she started her own PERIOD the menstrual movement chapter and has donated over 70,000 products to the Coastal Bend.
One of her greatest achievements is successfully petitioning to get free menstrual products at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
In 2020, she stayed busy by starting her own non-profit called Crimson Cause and meeting with legislators virtually to introduce a bill to end the tampon tax in Texas.
In her free time, she loves watching horror movies and shopping for vintage clothes.

Kendra Kinnison takes on numerous roles every day, yet she always has a singular goal: to build teams that achieve excellence and make a positive impact. She believes in relentless resilience, persistent pursuit of meaningful goals, and that the greatest strengths come from diverse perspectives.
Several years ago, the importance of teamwork hit home for Kinnison in a very tangible way during Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. The category 4 storm was a defining moment for the Port Royal Ocean Resort General Manager. She called upon lessons learned through years of study and experience to rally her team through the resort’s lengthy recovery process.
Kinnison still serves at Port Royal, primarily concentrating on litigation and financial projects. Most recently, Kendra has accepted the COO role at Allocations, where she’s focused on building the team and systems to support their fast-paced growth. She developed the curriculum for Coach.me’s Habit Coach Certification program and leads several cohorts each year. Kendra also serves on the Board of Directors for Navy Army Community Credit Union and the Advisory Board for the College of Business at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
When she’s not reading, writing, or collaborating with her teams, Kendra enjoys her collection of motorcycles and tries to experience several new racetracks each year. She lives in Corpus Christi, Texas, with her daughter and grand-daughter.

She used Pell grants and scholarships to pay for college, where her social justice consciousness was continuously challenged and refined. She graduated with a PhD in communication studies in 2006 from the University of Iowa. Today, Amy is an author, professor, and associate provost at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, an Hispanic-Serving Institution of 12,000 students in South Texas. She is the past president of the Central States Communication Association and has been honored with many local, state and national awards, including University Communication Educator of the Year in both Texas and Oklahoma. Amy lives with Gene, her spouse of 15 years, and their seven rescued pets.

When Kasia became a mother, she decided to make a professional change and pursue being an entrepreneur. She became a health and life coach to continue to help others change their lives. In her beginning college days, Kasia thought about becoming a real estate agent but chose to not pursue that path then.
During the pandemic, she decided to finally pursue those dreams and obtained her real estate license to represent individuals in making one of the biggest purchases in their lives.

Dr. Karlene, a Jamaican by birth, completed a Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. in Physical chemistry at the University of the West Indies by the age of 27. She then immigrated to the United States where she pursued Post Doctoral studies at Iowa State University. She landed her dream job as Research Chemist with Celanese Corporation in Corpus Christi TX where she currently resides. While working in the lab during the day, Dr. Karlene found the time to study and complete an MBA at TAMU-CC where she returned later as an Organic Chemistry Instructor and lab coordinator. Four years later she accepted a position at Del Mar College where she is now a tenured Associate Professor.
In her Mary Kay business, Karlene ranks in the top 2% of the company. She has earned the use of her second vehicle through the company and has earned an all-expense paid cruise to the Bahamas for her and her husband. In addition to these amazing accomplishments, she has been rewarded with 5 diamond rings and many more prizes for her consistency in reaching high levels of sales. Dr. Karlene is most proud to serve her customers and her unit members as she carries out the mission of enriching lives.
Dr. Karlene serves her local church as a leader and teacher. She also serves in the Pearls of Grace Dance Ministry. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the CITCO Academy at Moody High School where she participates in the GEMS and MEN4STEM Conferences yearly. In addition, Dr. Karlene Lyn has just been appointed Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Stark College and Seminary.

Mr. Lars is a certified Violence Prevention and Intervention Specialist, receiving his certification and training through the prestigious Harvard University, with Dr. Renee Prothro-Stith. Mr. Lars is a former free-agent with the Houston Oilers, and Oakland Raiders, former Defensive line coach for the Shreveport Pelicans, as well as numerous head and assistant coaching positions from Louisiana to California.
He is most proud of his instructional tenure at the infamous George Washington Preparatory High School in South Central Los Angeles; with famed, nationally renowned Principal; Dr. George J. McKenna, III of the “George (Movie) McKenna Story”, Portrayed by the renowned, prolific actor; Denzel Washington. During his tenure at Washington Preparatory; Lars served as a head football coach/athletic director and administrative assistant to Dr. McKenna.
He has several poetic publications registered in the National Library of Poetry and has four published books of poetry; “Painted Images”, “Mind Muscle I&II” and “Reflections of Life”. He eagerly anticipates his two (2) upcoming; parent, friendly, self-help publications; “Mothers and Their S’Men An Introspective Look At Mothers Rearing Their Sons”, and “Sons Views of Their Mothers Through Adult Lenses” both are slated for release in May 2019.
Mr. Lars’ latest publication; “Dying On My Feet My Journey Times Two”, was inspired and ordained by God; he shares his life’s struggles and challenges from the age of eight years old through his becoming Acute promyelocytic free. This publication is receiving rave reviews and is said to be extremely inspiring and captivating.
His poetry publications (4) the latest being; “Mind Muscle” have been compared to that of two of the great poets of our time; Dr. Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes.
Mr. Lars has been blessed to have received many sports and academic awards, however; he is most proud of being presented with the “key” to the City of Bossier City, Louisiana, in 1993, by former (deceased) Mayor George Dement.
Mr. Lars is a well known and prolific author and his latest book "Just an ordinary Joe - George 8:46 - Your denial is your conscience” is set to debut on October 1, 2020.

PowerUp Hero of Education Name: Dr. Nancy Vera Superpower: Her Voice
Dr. Nancy Vera had traveled throughout the nation for almost 10 years as an educator representative before finding her way back to Corpus Christi, Texas, where she dreams of one day establishing a peace and social justice center.
“I visited cities in Texas and almost every state in the country, and it was an exciting experience,” said Vera. “But I got tired of flying in airplanes and decided I could make a difference in a child’s life right here in my hometown.”
Vera, who received her degrees from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, including her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership, has helped many children in the city. Together, Vera and Gloria Hicks identified student needs and raised more than $60,000 for equipment, T-shirts, reading and math software, and motivational banners for Roy Miller High School in Corpus Christi. Vera later spearheaded the effort to name Gloria Hicks Elementary School after the philanthropist. As President of the Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers, she has led efforts to provide resources for teachers, 75,000 free books to area children and thousands of dollars for student supplies.
Vera, who taught English Language Arts at Carroll High School, specializes in working with at-risk students who are in danger of dropping out and live in poverty. Throughout her teaching career, Vera has created many programs to assist her students in achieving academic success, such as the Cocoa Café, where students took part in study sessions and were provided with refreshments.
“I live a lifestyle that is about lifting people up,” said Vera. “I focus on helping the disenfranchised and the marginalized, and I work to promote social justice and peace.”
Vera was President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council No. 4444 and, most recently, founded the LULAC Para Todos chapter in 2019. She pioneered “Operation Right Track” a public campaign to raise awareness about gang violence, drug, and alcohol abuse. Under Vera’s leadership, Operation Right Track accepted a $10,000 donation from the Scripps Howard Foundation to pilot a gang prevention program. Her LULAC Council also hosts a yearly “Celebration of Family” banquet to honor parents for their leadership role in raising their children. She also works for an end to domestic violence.
Dr. Vera serves as vice president of the South Texas Human Rights Center and co-chair of the CCPD Training Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the AFT Latin@ Task Force and chair of the Texas AFT Community Engagement Committee.

PowerUp Hero of Early Childhood Education Name: Annie Mucheru Garza Superpower: Love
Annie Mucheru Garza is an award-winning early childhood educator. She has been teaching for over 10 years and has been recognized as the winner of the Corpus Christi Elementary Teacher of the Year Award and nominee for the national award.
As a leader in early childhood educational technology, she provides new approaches to motivate students of all learning styles to succeed with the use of technology.
From a young age, she was aware of the importance of education, a quality instilled by her parents. Annie was born and raised with five older siblings in Nairobi, Kenya. All of her siblings graduated from various universities, and Mucheru knew that she wanted to do the same.
In 2001, she moved to Corpus Christi where she attended Del Mar College and received an Associate Degree in Business Administration before being accepted into the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi College of Business. She discovered her love for teaching while working at PowerUp.org’s Texas Techies summer program focused on technology for children ages three and up.
After this experience, she switched majors from business to education and graduated from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Education.
Annie’s distinct love of expanding young minds led her to start her own school, Little Texas Techies Academy. Starting her business and finding success in education was confirmation for her that hard work really does pay off, though she truly believes she could not have made it this far without so many important people in her life, such as her mother, brothers, sisters and all fellow amazing teachers that she has had the privilege of working with. Zoraida is a passionate communicator and self-esteem enthusiast who is making a positive impact in the lives of girls, young women, and the people who care about them.
Entrepreneur & Community Advocate Zoraida is the founder of Empowered Fem, which is an energy movement designed to catalyze you into your best life. She is dedicated to providing self-esteem enhancing workshops for women that uplift, educate, and motivate! To expand the scope and mission of Empowered Fem, Zoraida launched a non-profit branch of the organization in 2019, to include teen empowerment and outreach. Denis Wisner began his journey in Brooklyn, New York, then spent most of his adolescent years in Southern California, and currently lives in Corpus Christi, Texas. Suraida Nañez-James is the President and Founder of Gulf Reach, LLC., a company focused on her expertise and passions for Science, Health, and Education.
She offers consulting services for K-12 and community science education programming and development, as well as a free Teen Science Café program for middle and high school students.
Her passion for the ocean, environmental education, and inspiring the next generation of scientists. Her work has taken her to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to explore the world’s largest single volcano and Tamu Massif, sailing on the Schmidt Ocean Institute research vessel for 36 days with other scientists. Nañez-James was tasked with communicating the mysteries of the ocean to more than 4,000 students and educators from around the world.

Kingsville Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet, which will take place on Thursday, March 28, at the Henrietta Memorial Center located at 405 N. Sixth St.
This year’s theme is “We’re Here For You,” and will highlight the benefits to local business owners when they are members of the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce.
As with last year’s banquet, the event will eschew its traditional solo guest speaker in favor of having three local small business owners give speeches about their successes and how the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce has helped them along the way.
Members of the community came together on Saturday afternoon to celebrate Black History Month. The celebration began in 1970 but has its beginning in the 1920s. The Alice celebration focused on celebrating the history of African American people through music, speeches and education exhibits featured throughout the venue.
Music was a prominent feature for the day, with many choirs and soloists performing. The AHS choir performed the unofficial Negro National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing. The Texas A&M Jazz Band was on hand to perform, as well as saxophonist Daryl Eason. Dinah Taylor also sang a selection of songs by Whitney Houston.
The keynote speaker was Liza Wisner, a Kenyan born American who has attained much success after coming to the states in 1999 on a golf scholarship from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Wisner was also a top three finalist on The Apprentice, the television program formerly helmed by President Donald Trump. Wisner gave an inspiring speech about the power of people and how one person can provide their family with “generational wealth”.
“Tomorrow is not promised, all you have is today,” said Wisner. “The time is now, the opportunities are now.”
She also encouraged those in attendance to never remain neutral in the face of conflict. Wisner discussed her great grandmother, who had been a Kenyan freedom fighter.
“When you remain neutral, you’re actually on the side of the oppressor,” said Wisner.
Dinner followed the day’s events.
